Tourists in the UAE on a 30 or 60 days visit visa can extend their stay within the country by another 30 days. The decision by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA) and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) grants visitors an additional 30 days to explore and enjoy the country’s diverse offerings.

The UAE has implemented several changes in its visa procedures since October last year, marking one of the largest residency and entry permit reforms by the ICP (Immigration and Citizenship Program). Since then, several developments have taken place in the visit visa system of the country.

As per the ICA website, individuals holding a visit visa of 30 or 60 days will now be eligible for an additional 30-day stay, and the maximum extension period for a visit visa holder is 120 days.

A call centre representative of Amer Centre said that a visit visa extension within the country is possible and “one must contact their visa issuing agent to for the extension."

Maximum extension

According to a call centre representative at ICP, it is possible to obtain a visa extension within the country for a period of 30 days. This extension applies to both long-term and short-term visit visas. However, it is important to note that the total duration of stay within a year should not exceed 120 days.

The call centre executive clarified, “If a visitor is on a 30 days visa, the extension can be possible up to 120 days (30 days on each extension),” added the executive.

Procedure for extension

"If a tourist or a visitor would like to extend their stay, they should contact the issuing travel agent or sponsor," said Firose Khan, operation manager at Arabian Business Centre.

"Your sponsor or travel agent who issued the visa can provide you with information on the extension process, required documentation, fees, and any other relevant details. It's important to initiate this process well before your current visa's expiration to allow sufficient time for the extension to be processed," added Khan.

Documentation required

The visitor’s passport is required to extend a visit visa. The issuing agent will provide more details on the required documents.

Time duration for extension

The process may take a few days from submitting the documents depending on your travel agent who applies for the service. However, on the ICP website, the “time to complete the service after its requirements are completed is 48 hours,”

Extension charges:

“The cost of extension for a month is Dh1,050,” said Khan.

The GDRFA elaborated the costs of extension and gave a breakdown of the rates on their website.

Visa extension fee: Dh600, in addition to the value-added tax (5%).

Additional fees (if the sponsored person is inside the country):

Knowledge dirham : Dh10

Innovation dirham : Dh10

Fee inside the country: Dh500

The website also mentioned, “The total amount of the visa may vary depending on the circumstances surrounding the sponsored person or for any other reasons that may require that,”

On ICP website, the cost vary.

Request fee: Dh100

Issuance fee: Dh500, and other related charges are applicable.

The website also mentions the application for an extension of entry permit for tourism is made through the tourism companies. Agents have urged the visitors to leave the country before the visa expiry or extend their visas to avoid attracting any penalties or difficulties while exiting.

This extension caters to various purposes, including tourism, family visits, business meetings, and other personal matters. "Visitors can utilise this extra time to explore the country's iconic landmarks, indulge in shopping, savour culinary delights, or simply relax in the UAE's world-class hospitality," said Khan.

Visitors to the UAE whose visas are about to expire can extend their stay by up to 60 days if necessary.

Anyone who does not go through the proper procedures and stays beyond the validity of their visit visa will be subject to fines of Dh50 ($13.61) a day.

Visitors who stay beyond the time allowed without renewing their visas can also be arrested for staying in the country illegally. Inspection campaigns are regularly carried out to catch offenders.

Here The National explains how to avoid these fines by applying for a visa extension.

No more 'grace period'

Visitors to Dubai will no longer be granted a 10-day grace period when their tourist visa expires, so travel agents, The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA) are urging visitors to apply for a 30-day extension visa before their original visa expires.

This extension can be applied for twice, resulting in an additional 60-day visit.

“People wishing to stay in the UAE after their visit visa expires should apply for a 30-day extension visa to stay legally in the country,” said an ICP call centre agent.

“They can apply for a second 30-day extension, maximum.”

More than 14 million people visited Dubai in 2022. Reuters

The authority encouraged visitors to arrange the extension in advance of the current visa expiring, and warned of the upper limit for number of days spent in the country.

“People should be aware that the total duration of stay within a year should not exceed 120 days,” the agent said.

How much does it cost?

According to the ICP website, the cost of extending a visit visa is Dh610.

However, according to Amer, an immigration service centre, the cost for an extension of a visa issued by GDRFA-Dubai is Dh800.

Fees can vary between Dh800 and Dh1,100 when applying through a travel agency.

Where do I go to get the extension?

“The 30-day extension visa can be issued by the same travel agency that issued the visa for the customer in the first place," said Roshan Davis, manager of Golden Talent Tourism Agency in Dubai.

Visitors who obtained a visa on arrival can apply for an extension via the ICP or GDRFA-Dubai websites, or customer service centres.

Anyone with a visa on arrival can also take their passport to Dubai airport immigration in the Terminal 3 arrival area, Mr Davis added.

What are the required documents?

Holders of a visit visa should send a copy of their original visa and passport to the travel agent for extension. They can also visit the ICP or GDRFA-Dubai website to apply for an extension and the visa will be extended within 48 hours.

The passport should have a validity of at least six months to apply for an extension.

For how many days can validity be extended?

The service allows visit visa holders to extend their visa for up to 60 days, in two applications of 30-day extensions.

Who is the tourist visa for?

Those who do not qualify for a visa on arrival or visa-free entry to the UAE can apply for a tourist visa.

Citizens from 69 countries and states are eligible for a visa on arrival in the UAE . Females below the age of 18 are not eligible to apply for a tourist visa unless they are travelling with their parents.

How can I apply for a tourist visa?

Visitors from countries that do not have a visa-on-arrival arrangement with the UAE can apply for their visas in advance through a travel agency or through the airline.

Extending Your Stay in Dubai: A Comprehensive Guide to Visa Extensions

by Shoaib Ali | Oct 8, 2023 | Dubai , misc , Realestate | 0 comments

can tourist visa be extended in dubai

Dubai, known for its luxury, vibrant nightlife, and modern architecture, is a top tourist destination. However, many visitors are unaware that securing a tourist visa is a prerequisite for their trip. Additionally, if you plan to stay longer than the standard 30-day visa allows, you’ll need to apply for an extension. This article will provide comprehensive information on how to extend your tourist visa in Dubai, ensuring you get the most out of your visit to the City of Gold.

Exploring Your Visa Extension Options

When it comes to extending your visa in Dubai, there are two primary options: using a flight to change visas or changing your visa upon arrival at the airport. The process does not necessitate leaving the country. You can easily purchase this package at various retail locations, via WhatsApp, online at Musafir.com, or by emailing [email protected]. While many nationalities do not require a security deposit when passing through the airport, some specific nationalities may need a refundable deposit of AED 5,600. Importantly, once you enter the UAE, you are not obligated to leave the country to receive your visa extension. It’s essential to apply at least 4-5 working days before your current visa expires. If you opt for a flight-based visa change, you may stay at the airport for up to 48 hours.

Documents Required for Visa Renewal

To renew your visa in Dubai, you’ll need certain documents, including a copy of your passport, which must be valid for at least six more months, and a passport-size photo with a white background. The renewal fee of AED 2000 is typically covered by the sponsor as part of their sponsorship agreement. UAE Visit visas initially last for 30 days but can be extended for up to 90 days with a renewal fee of AED 500.

Renewing Your Visit Visa

If you haven’t left the country, you can renew your visit visa at the immigration office. The renewal process will require a fee of 500 AED. However, if you arrive more than 90 days after your country’s visa expires, you can still extend your stay with inside country visa extensions.

Extending Without Exit: Changes in Visa Rules

The process of changing visas within the UAE without leaving the country came to an end on December 24, 2022. All immigration offices in the UAE ceased processing visa changes without leaving. Visitors seeking visa extensions can now choose between the Oman visa run or the Airport-to-Airport method.

Understanding the Grace Period

Tourists in Dubai who hold a 30-day visit visa have a 10-day grace period after their visa expires. During this period, you can make arrangements for your departure. However, if your visa is from another emirate, it’s crucial to leave promptly. You can check the remaining days of your grace period on the smart channel portal.

Dubai’s Appeal for Tourists

Dubai is gaining popularity as a vacation destination worldwide. With stunning beaches, vibrant cities, and a five-year tourist visa, the UAE becomes even more appealing. Visitors can enter multiple times on self-sponsorship, staying for 90 days without taking a commercial flight. The UAE’s visa system is open to everyone, offering extended stays through visa renewal options.

Extend Your Dubai Visit Visa for Convenience

Dubai’s popularity as a tourist destination often leads to requests for visa extensions. For a fee of AED 600, you can extend your Dubai visit visa for up to 30 days, twice. Additionally, UAE tourist visa holders can now extend or change their visas without leaving the country. This can be done two to three days before the current visa expires, providing flexibility for visitors.

Procedure for Visa Extension

Extending your visit visa in the UAE involves specific steps. Apply for the extension at the Immigration Office at least seven days before your visa expires. Prepare the required documents, including a valid passport, Emirates ID, residence visa, entry permit, and health insurance policy. Once you’ve submitted the necessary documents, complete the application form and pay the relevant fees. Upon approval, you’ll receive a visa extension valid for six months, allowing for an extended stay.

New Rules for Visit Visa Extension

The UAE government has introduced new rules for visit visa extensions in response to the growing demand for travel to the country. Visitors can now stay for up to 30 days, an increase from the previous 14 days. The extension process has been simplified, allowing online applications instead of embassy or consulate visits. Furthermore, visitors can now extend their visit visas up to twice within a 12-month period. These changes make it easier for visitors to fully explore the UAE’s attractions.

Visa Extensions: Cost-effective and Simplified

For visitors seeking a longer stay in the UAE, extending their visa is an attractive option. Dubai’s visit visas are easily obtainable, with a set cost that can be determined in advance. The government charges AED 600 per tourist visa renewal, usually paid upon departure and re-entry. Visit visas in Dubai/UAE can last 180 days per year, with the initial 90 days extendable for another 90 days. The visa extension process typically takes between five and seven working days, so it’s crucial to apply before the deadline to avoid legal complications.

Frequently Asked Questions about Visit Visa Extension

Visitors to the UAE can extend their tourist visas up to two times. The first extension grants an additional 30 days, and the second extension offers another 30 days. Applicants must apply for the extension at least one week before the visa’s expiration date. Valid passports, visa copies, and a reasonable reason for extension are required. Depending on the situation, a fee may be applicable, along with the presentation of a return ticket. It’s important to adhere to UAE visa rules to avoid fines, imprisonment, or deportation.

Final Words

Extending your stay in Dubai can be a straightforward process if you understand the visa rules. Ensure that you apply for extensions within the stipulated time frames to enjoy your time

The Gulf Countries’ Visa Is Coming. Will It Be Enough to Land Taylor Swift?

Josh Corder , Skift

May 7th, 2024 at 10:33 AM EDT

A GCC unified visa could prompt many things, including some fleeting visits by superstars.

Josh Corder

A Taylor Swift tour is on Saudi Arabia’s radar. That’s not saying much of course – Swift is on every destination’s radar . But Saudi says such a concert could be in the country’s future if the wider Arabia does more to promote itself as a unified destination.

“If we [the GCC] want the Taylor Swifts of the world, we can do it if we collaborate and get an Arabian tour [finalized],” said Saudi Tourism Authority (STA) CEO Fahd Hamidaddin at Arabian Travel Market (ATM), Dubai’s biggest travel trade show.

Hamidaddin was on a panel discussing the rollout of the region’s “GCC zone” visa – a single travel permit akin to the Schengen zone that will allow travelers across Saudi, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman.

Swift’s Eras Tour is ongoing until the winter with 150+ shows on five continents. She does not have any stops in the GCC, despite Saudi and the UAE investing heavily in their events infrastructure.

Taylor Swift Isn’t Playing Brisbane, So Why is Its Airport Braced for a ‘Swiftie Surge’?

Taylor Swift Isn’t Playing Brisbane, So Why is Its Airport Braced for a ‘Swiftie Surge’?

The phenomenal impact of the ‘Swift Lift’ is being seen by travel and tourism companies around the world – even when Taylor isn’t visiting the city in question.

Qatar too has a string of dormant FIFA stadiums perfect for massive concerts.

Saudi is no stranger to using superstars to promote its tourism agenda. Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are on the payroll, living and working in the kingdom. Both often promote key tourism destinations in the country and appear in ad campaigns.

In the events tourism segment, Saudi is a big player in WWE and other fighting sports and Abu Dhabi plays host to numerous UFC games.

The GCC Zone

This visa was first mentioned in May 2023 at a conference in Dubai, where the countries’ ministers shared their hopes to unite the GCC so tourists would consider cross-country travel like they do in Europe.

It was then approved in October last year. At ATM, government officials said the “platform” should be completed before the end of 2024.

How could a unified visa help land big acts? Countries’ tourism orgs are aligning on packages to sell to visitors.

On stage, Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister for Economy UAE said that the visa will include “grand packages” a month in length.

“The unified tourist visa will allow travelers to visit all six countries,” he said. Through the GCC grand tours we are aiming to finish, tourists will spend more than 30 days in the region.”

Another panelist added that the new visa will primarily bump up length of stay in the Gulf. Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority said: “One of the main aims is to extend the length of stay. In leisure, people can travel up to four weeks. We want them to combine their holidays across the GCC.”

A Multi-Nation Visa Will Roll Out In The Middle East This Year

The Gulf countries’ Schengen-like visa is coming by the end of 2024. The region’s tourism leaders say it will be a game-changer for Middle East travel.

The GCC includes Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman.

T he head of Saudi Arabian tourism wants Taylor Swift to bring her tour to the Middle East. Of course he does; Swift’s Eras tour has a proven track record of boosting economies wherever it goes.

But attracting major events like a Swift tour will require regional cooperation, Fahd Hamidaddin, CEO of the Saudi Tourism Authority, said on Monday at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM). “I f we want to get the Taylor Swifts of the world, we can collaborate, with a view to an ‘Arabian tour’ ,” he told attendees.

Hamidaddin was touting the rollout of the region’s upcoming “unified GCC visa,” a travel permit similar to Europe’s Schengen visa that will allow more than 30 consecutive days of inter-country travel throughout the six Gulf Cooperation Council member nations: Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman. While no date has been announced, officials say the visa is expected to launch by the end of 2024.

“In a significant move aimed at simplifying travel logistics and fostering tourism, the Gulf Cooperation Council has given the green light to a unified tourist visa that will allow travelers to visit all six countries,” said Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, the UAE’s economy minister, noting plans to incorporate month-long “grand packages” in the marketing mix.

The visa is expected to be a boon for the region’s cruise industry, since cruise passengers will no longer have to apply for visas for each port of call. “I happen to also sit on the board of Cruise Saudi, and we are investing big on cruise ships as well as ports and cruise terminals,” Hamidaddin said. “We can easily see a big shift from Med to Red.”

It’s difficult to overstate the Middle East’s tourism ambitions or the speed at which the region has become a power player in the global travel arena. Consider the rise of Dubai, a city-state in the United Arab Emirates that’s roughly the size of Jacksonville, Florida, which now has more hotel rooms than Las Vegas.

Saudi Arabia, closed off to leisure tourists until just five years ago, is now awash with a staggering $800 billion in tourism investment . In February, the kingdom hit a major milestone, having attracted 100 million tourist visits seven years ahead of schedule.

Last year was a record-breaker for tourist arrivals in Qatar—a feat considering that the tiny nation had just hosted the FIFA World Cup the previous year, an event that, by the way, left a handful of stadiums ideal for giant concerts.

The tourism ministers of GCC members hope to the unified visa will both streamline travel red tape and encourage travelers to stay longer and travel wider while in the Gulf region, thus boosting their respective and collective economies.

The 20 Best Countries for American Expats to Consider in 2024

You may be surprised by a few on this list.

If you’ve ever daydreamed about purchasing a beachside bungalow in Costa Rica or a cliffside dwelling in Portugal, you’re not alone. In fact, many Americans have made this dream a reality in recent years. According to American Citizens Abroad , a nonprofit organization that represents the legislative concerns of U.S. citizens living overseas, as of 2022, an estimated 5.1 million Americans live abroad, with 3.9 million as civilians. With the rise of flexible or remote work, new visa programs, and impressive tax incentives, it's becoming more common for U.S. citizens to consider a big move.

While it’s true that many of the places Americans are laying down roots offer beautiful landscapes, vibrant cultures and incredible cuisine, these countries also offer enviable long-term quality of life benefits that can be hard to find here in the states. Factors like a low cost of living, healthy work-life balance, free public healthcare, and lower instances of gun violence make a compelling case to leave life in America behind. Although it’s not easy both emotionally and bureaucratically to pack up and move to another country, these 20 countries make it easy for Americans to find a new homeland. Read on to discover the best countries for expats in 2024.

As the most developed nation in Central America with a mix of both a glittering skyline in Panama City and beautiful beaches and lush natural surroundings, Panama is a vibrant choice for Americans looking to head abroad. Plus, to make things super simple, the country operates on the American dollar, which goes much further here. Apartment rentals range from $900 to $1500 in Panama City for more than 1000 square feet, and doctors visits can cost as little as $20. Digital nomads will love the high-speed internet available, and the country’s short stay visa for remote workers , a 9-month visa that can be renewed for another 9 months.

camara de lobos madeira

The oldest wine region in Europe, sun-soaked beaches and instagram-worthy cobblestone streets, there’s a lot to love about Portugal. This small country on the Iberian peninsula is a big draw for entrepreneurial expats thanks to funding programs and business incentives as well as a different types of digital nomad visas. These temporary stay visas will allow you to live in Portugal for up to one year with an option to extend up to five years. And, retirees rejoice: You can become a non-habitual resident and only pay 10% in taxes.

Spain has some of the most affordable cost of living in all of Western Europe (free tapas with a glass of vino, anyone?) and there’s so much variety across the country’s cities and towns. You can go full on cosmopolitan in Madrid, live the beachy life in Valencia, live out your flamenco dreams in Seville or indulge in Moorish history and culture in Granada. Spain offers a self-employment visa that’s ideal for freelancers and remote workers, and families will love the wide selection of international schools and affordable public healthcare.

So although the land of stunning mountains, Oktoberfest and schnitzel offers a residency permit for foreign freelancers and self-employed people to live in Germany for a period of up to 3 years, it may take a while to get approval. That said, once you’re in, a life in Germany can be the stuff of fairytales. You can tuck away in a cottage outside of Munich near the Alps, or snag an affordable loft in the undeniably cool capital city of Berlin. Wherever you choose, you’ll get access to one of the best healthcare and education systems in the world.

costa rica arenal volcano

A million Americans visit Costa Rica every year and more than a few of them have decided to permanently call it home, which isn’t much of a surprise. Perched between the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, the gorgeous country draws people (especially surfers) thanks to craggy volcanoes, lush rain forests and pura vida ("pure life") philosophy for good living. Becoming at least a temporary resident is easy and straightforward thanks to the Rentista visa, which allows foreigners to stay for a 2-year period and potentially extend it. If you’re looking for a lifestyle that’s outdoorsy, laid back, and fantastically environmentally friendly, Costa Rica is it.

Travel to Ghana sharply increased in popularity in 2019 during the Year of Return , a birthright journey inviting African Americans and those of the African diaspora to commemorate 400 years since the first enslaved Africans were forcibly taken to the then colony of Virginia. While many visitors then decided to stay, more were drawn to Ghana during the racial uprisings of 2020, seeking relief from violence and racism in the United States. Rents in bustling Accra are nearly unbelievable (i.e. $700 a month for a three bedroom house with security), the restaurant and nightlife scene is vibrant and there are fantastic international schools for families.

Note: The LGBTQI+ community should "exercise increased caution," according to the U.S. Department of Travel , due to crime, violence, and anti-LGBTQI+ rhetoric—especially in the Bono East, Bono, Savannah, Northern, North East, and Upper East regions due to civil unrest. Ghanaian law prohibits sexual intimacy between persons of the same sex, and punishment can include fines and/or incarceration.

Between Dubrovnik, Zagreb and Split, there are several beautiful cities across the Croatian coastline to serve as your next seaside hideaway. This Mediterranean country is known for its sweeping views of the sapphire-hued Adriatic Sea, bright orange tiled rooftops and ancient palaces and forts. Croatia was one of the first countries to introduce a digital nomad visa in January 2021, giving travelers a low-cost option to stay and work remotely in Europe for a year. A unique aspect of this temporary resident visa is you don’t have to get it worked out before you travel, you can apply when in Croatia, and also at Croatian consulates and embassies.

How many of us were drawn into the fantasy of dropping everything and moving to Italy thanks to movies like Under the Tuscan Sun and Eat, Pray, Love ? We should be entitled to financial compensation. Well, even though that’s not likely to happen, Italy just announced its brand new digital nomad visa as of March 2024, a one-year visa that can be renewed and comes with a minimum income requirement of just over 30,000 Euros.

The country is seemingly still working out the kinks as the visa is meant for “highly skilled applicants,” yet doesn’t define exactly what that means. Cost of living varies widely from major cities like Rome and Florence to small villages, but you’re sure to get incredible food and wine wherever you choose.

United Arab Emirates

city of dubai burj khalifa

One would think that in glittering cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, which are both known for their remarkable luxury experiences, the cost of living would be significantly higher than in the United States, but in fact, it’s much lower. In comparable cities like Miami and New York where rent for one can range from $2000 to $2600, rent for one in Dubai holds strong at nearly half the cost at $1200. The city of Dubai recently launched a one-year virtual working program for remote workers , allowing them to benefit from the zero income tax for individuals.

Many American travelers are familiar with the wonders of Mexico: From gorgeous tropical beaches along the Caribbean Sea and Pacific ocean to lush mountain highlands and one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, Mexico City, there are so many fantastic cities and towns to start a new life. Best of all, if you’re unsure about completely uprooting, Americans can stay in Mexico for up to six months on a tourist visa. Longer than that requires a temporary resident visa which lasts up to 4 years. In Mexico you'll find a more relaxed pace, nearly half the cost of living in the states, and exceptional, affordable healthcare.

Note: The U.S. Department of State recommends that you do not travel to certain states in Mexico due to increased violent crimes such as homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery. Make sure to look at each state's precaution level before deciding where you should live or visit.

From the Canadian Rockies to quaint, French-leaning townships in Quebec to nautical living in Nova Scotia, Canada has so much to offer expats. Canada is consistently ranked as one of the happiest countries in the world and one of the safest . Outdoor enthusiasts will love the rugged wild across the country, and there’s free public healthcare for citizens and permanent residents should all that adventuring cause a bump or scrape. Digital nomads don’t need a work visa to work remotely from Canada, and they can stay for up to six months.

The strength of the U.S. dollar these days has made living in one of the most culturally and geographically diverse continents on earth more affordable than ever (1 USD is worth $1.52 Australian dollars). While many Americans opt for sophisticated Sydney or cool and edgy Melbourne, your money will go a lot further in smaller cities like Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, and you’ll get to see Australia’s stunning natural landscape. The Working Holiday Visa for visitors between 18 to 30 is a favorite for folks that just want to hang out for a year (or up to three if you do enough specified work), but longer residences require employer sponsorship, specific skills, or business visas.

Somewhere deep in all of us, we all want to be a little bit like Rihanna. One way to do it is by starting a new life in her home country of Barbados. Barbados was a trendsetter during the height of COVID isolation when it launched its digital nomad program called the Barbados Welcome Stamp in July 2020. The 12-month program allows visitors to relocate and work from a beautiful Caribbean island with strong high-speed wifi, world-class cuisine, local rum, and year-round sunshine.

Colombia’s vibrant South American culture, mild year-round climate (with Caribbean-like vibes along the coast), Afro-Caribbean cuisine, and low cost of living with one-bedroom rents hovering around $530 per month in a city center like Bogotá make it an attractive country for expats. In April 2023, Colombia launched its Digital Nomad Visa that has a duration of 2 years and can not be extended. It is also one that has the lowest income requirements of only $684 per month.

Note: The U.S. Department of Travel has issued a level 3 warning and says to "reconsider travel" to Colombia due to crime, civil unrest, kidnapping, and terrorism. The state department has issued a do not travel warning to Arauca, Cauca (excluding Popayán), and Norte de Santander due to crime and terrorism. They also recommend avoiding travel to Colombia-Venezuela border region.

Switzerland

spiez castle by lake thun in canton of bern, switzerland

The natural beauty of Switzerland’s glacier-fed lakes and Alps mountain range is unmatched, plus it recently took the top spot as the world’s safest country , so although getting a long-term visa here isn’t easy, it’s definitely worth it. As one of the wealthiest countries in the world, money talks here. The best and quickest way to snag a long-term visa is through the Golden Visa Program for individuals looking to invest in Switzerland in exchange for residency, and eventually citizenship. The lump taxation payment will cost you a cool $203,000. If your pockets aren’t that fat, you can always stay for 90 days without a visa.

Bermuda is a unique Caribbean nation because it’s not actually in the Caribbean. Perched in the Atlantic ocean only 600 miles from the North Carolina coastline, it’s a geographically convenient Caribbean-like escape from America, but you can still stay relatively close to family and friends along the east coast. In 2020, Bermuda launched the Work from Bermuda visa for remote workers to stay for up to 12 months; the application fee is only $275 and there’s no requirement to prove a certain wage. However, the cost of living here is the highest on earth, and on average, 84.9% higher than in the United States. If you have the money, incredible festivals like Carnival and Cup Match, seaside living, and pink-sand beaches may make it worth it.

Vietnam has everything you could want in a landscape: beautiful mountains, some of the world’s best beaches and bustling shopping and nightlife in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh cities. The cost of living for Americans is also unbelievably low, with spacious one bedroom apartments costing less than $700 per month and delicious street food like bowls of phở, spring rolls and banh mi’s ranging from $1 to $5. There’s also a fantastic healthcare system, although the language barrier may pose a challenge. Digital nomads and freelancers visiting Vietnam do not need a work visa or work permit, as long as the company or companies they are working for are not based in Vietnam. All you need is the standard tourist visa to enter the country.

wat arun temple of dawn, bangkok, thailand

Thailand is a tropical paradise with strong infrastructure, high-speed internet and low living costs. Whether you opt for big city living in Bangkok or the laid back vibes of Chiang Mai, Americans are sure to find an incredibly high standard of living for a fraction of what they’d pay in the states. For example, in Bangkok, $600 a month can get you a high rise apartment in a building with a pool, sauna and gym, or you can find even better deals by snagging a bungalow in a beach town.

Most digital nomads and remote workers take a stint in Thailand on a 60-day tourist visa which can be extended for 30 more days. However, if you’re looking for a longer stay, the 10-year Long Term Residency visa has oddly specific qualifications: You must have an income of $80,000 and work for a public company on a stock exchange, or for a private company that can show a combined revenue of $150 million over the last 3 years.

helsinki, finland

Finland was named the happiest country in the world in the 2024 World Happiness Report for the seventh year in a row. With high-quality healthcare and social security, free education and affordable daycare, inclusive healthcare, parental and family leave, among many other benefits, it’s easy to see how the Finnish lifestyle leaves people happy and stress-free. Access to lush parks, forests and clean, natural lakes also does wonders for the mental health of Finns. Most American remote workers travel to Finland on a standard Schengen tourist visa , which allows a stay in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180 day period, but if you want the self-employment visa that allows a stay for up to six months, you must register your business in Finland.

Note: Though this Nordic country neighbors Russia, Finland has been a member of NATO since 2023 and recently closed their Eastern border . The U.S. Department of State issued a level 1 warning and recommends taking "normal precautions."

tbilisi downtown, georgia, taken in april 2019

Right at the intersection of Europe and Asia is the Republic of Georgia, one of the best countries in the world for digital nomads. Residents from 95 countries around the world can enter Georgia and stay for a full year on a tourist visa, and unlike many tourist visas you can work remotely. Visitors must be able to prove an income of $2,000 a month or have a bank statement showing $24,000. A furnished apartment in the capital city of Tbilisi runs about $700 and Georgians are known for their warm hospitality and fun-loving culture.

Note: Some areas of Georgia pose an increased risk, and the U.S. Department of State does not recommend traveling to the Russian-occupied Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia due to risk of crime, civil unrest, and landmines. The country as a whole remains at a level 1 warning and the state department recommends exercising normal precautions.

Here's Every Destination Americans Can Travel To Without A Visa In 2024

Americans are back to traveling in droves now that the travel landscape is back to normal, excluding, of course, the state of conflict in some countries and the unpredictable realm of geopolitics, which keeps changing unpredictably by the minute.

Lucky for the average U.S. passport holder looking to escape the daily humdrum, there are very few limits as to where they can go.

Most countries now welcome them with open arms and are easing visa rules further, but that does not apply to all .

In fact, Americans need visas or electronic travel authorizations (ETAs) to travel to a number of popular destinations, including Australia, where an ETA is required, and Egypt, where a visa must be purchased on arrival, and that's only two examples.

The days of travel restrictions may be in the past, but that does not mean international travel is always completely seamless.

So, if you are wondering where Americans can travel to without any pre-existing requirements simply by holding a valid passport, this list may prove useful to you :

Let's start with the most restrictive continent for travelers: though Africa is widely known among Americans for transformative journeys, a wild undisturbed nature, and unmatched ethnic diversity, it is perhaps the hardest region to travel .

A majority of African countries still require Americans to obtain visas or eVisas in advance, an arduous process that may involve accessing outdated websites that are not fully functional, traveling to the nearest Consulate, paying expensive fees (as high as $200), and stressful border crossings.

There are only 15 destinations U.S. citizens can access completely visa-free, and interestingly enough, the continent's leading attraction is not one of them: arriving in Egypt, Americans must purchase a physical single or multiple-entry visa at the airport, with prices starting from $25.

Home to Mount Kilimanjaro, a bucket list African landmark, and the UNESCO-listed Zanzibar island, Tanzania, too, requires Americans to pay a visa fee for entering, at an even higher rate of $50; even global safari capital Kenya has eVisa arrangements in place.

Fortunately, not all African countries make it harder and more bureaucratic for U.S. citizens to enter, with subtropical Morocco, an Arab country straddling both the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts and the cultural hotspot that is South Africa allowing them to enter without visas.

The full list can be found below:

  • Central African Republic
  • Sao Tome and Principe
  • South Africa

Traveling Africa may prove challenging for most Americans, unless they a bunch of pre-obtained visas in hand, and plenty of blank passport pages to use up, but if it's any consolation, exploring their own continent couldn't be easier.

There is only one country in the whole of the mainland Americas where they cannot enter unless holding a valid tourist visa, and that is Venezuela , which in recent years has not exactly had friendly relations with the United States or most of its Southern neighbors, for that matter.

As for every other destination in the New World, Americans may come and go as they please, seeing they are not bound by restrictive entry rules and visa requirements, be in the form of entry authorizations or Consulate-issued permits.

From sunny Mexico down to tropical Colombia, they are eligible for hassle-free entry provided they carry a U.S. passport, and in these two countries in particular, their permitted length of stay can be as long as six months , sure to make slow travelers and digital nomads happy.

With that being said, Brazil, the largest South American country is now mulling over introducing a tourist visa for Americans, that would in theory make it impossible for them to visit unless holding a pre-obtained authorization, though that is not yet being enforced .

For 2024, these are all the North and South American countries U.S. nationals can visit without visa restrictions:

  • El Salvador

Asia is the perfect spot for Americans looking to immerse themselves in an entirely different culture and escape their mundane Western worries, but unfortunately for blue passport holders, unlike Africa, the list of visa-free countries in the continent of friendly smiles is not as limited.

The most obvious odd one out is China, which requires U.S. nationals to apply for a physical visa in order to enter, a bureaucratic process that typically involves a visit to a Consulate, where applicants must present documentation and be interviewed unless they are merely transiting through.

Fortunately, a majority of destinations across Asia are open to hosting Americans bureaucracy-free , and though there may be an entry form or an eVisa to be filled out here and there, these can be easily obtained online by paying a fee and with minimal hassle.

One such example is Vietnam, where U.S. travelers are not allowed to enter unless holding a valid eVisa.

On the brightside, the maximum length of stay for visa applicants traveling to the Southeast Asian gem in 2024 has been extended from 30 days to 3 months.

Exercising sovereignty over Bali, a popular wellness retreat and paradisaical island, Indonesia also requires Americans to purchase a visa, either online in advance or upon arrival at the airport, as does Cambodia and Laos; thus, they do not qualify for the list.

  • Philippines
  • South Korea

The Caribbean

Going abroad, there is truly nowhere most Americans would rather be than the tropical Caribbean, a turquoise-blue ocean littered with paradisaical islands, some of which are countries in their own right and others that are autonomous territories of larger states.

With the exception of Cuba , they are free to roam around the territory freely, usually by presenting a valid passport. In the communist state, however, they are officially discouraged from visiting by U.S. authorities, and those who do must purchase a ‘Tourist Card'.

Similarly to a visa, a Cuban Tourist Card can be obtained at a Cuban embassy or consular mission, or at the airport prior to departure, though the latter option is not advised as not all airlines and service providers are licensed to issue the document.

In some cases, the travel agency you book your Cuba trip with could be the one applying for the card.

As you might suspect, this requirement makes Fidel Castro's homeland the hardest country for U.S. tourists to enter in the Caribbean.

  • U.S. Virgin Islands*

Out of all the continents, Europe is easily where Americans will find it easier to travel around, with all but three countries granting them visa-free entry: in fact, a majority of Europen states is a member of the European Union, one of the United States' most trusted partners.

Whether they're off to Italy to chase Mediterranean sunsets and rugged drives as they eat gelato, or they're ticking off fairytale German castles off the list, U.S. passport holders do not have to worry about obtaining entry permits in advance ( at least for now ).

In the future, the EU will require them to apply for a travel authorization before flying, and that's still not a visa – it's an online form that needs to be filled coupled with a small, symbolic fee that actually exempts them from a regular visa – but as of this year, travel is still completely bureaucracy-free.

As for the exceptions, perhaps it's not a surprise that Russia and Belarus would bar entry to American travelers unless they've been pre-screened at a Consulate and have obtained a visa in advance, and it's not like there are many travelers going to these war-raging countries these days, anyway.

The third European – or marginally European – country that is not listed under the visa-free agreements is Azerbaijan , the southernmost of the Caucasus states, a region between Eastern Europe and Western Asia: in order to enter, Americans must apply for an eVisa valid for only 30 days .

Middle East

The Westernmost part of Asia, the Middle East is often treated as its own subcontinent, and similarly to the wider continent, it can be trickier to navigate if you're an American, not only due to complex visa rules, but also conflicts or anti-American sentiment.

Visiting Iraq, Jordan or Kuwait, you will be required to apply for a visa on arrival, with prices and passport requirements varying between countries, and even some of the visa-free destinations, like Lebanon and disputed Palestine, carry their own significant risks.

The war between Israel and Hamas has made the Jewish state equally high-risk for Americans to travel, especially now that Iran is weighing in .

We would definitely not encourage you to visit Iran, where Americans have been known to be arbitrarily arrested and accused of crimes despite being innocent and being aware of the multiple kidnapping cases, and only cross the Yemeni border at your own risk.

That being said, there are plenty more Middle Eastern countries that are risk-free .

These include visa-free Turkiye , home to the fascinating cross-continental city of Istanbul and the coastal resort of Antalya, the United Arab Emirates , with its futuristic Dubai, and the increasingly trendy Saudi Arabia: they are all formally neutral in the conflict, and they all warmly welcome American tourists.

  • Saudi Arabia
  • Turkiye (formerly spelled Turkey)
  • United Arab Emirates

Yet another subcontinent – not formally a continent, but rather a geopolitical concept – Oceania is arguably the most peaceful territory on Earth in 2024, with no wars , low levels of crime, and limited travel restrictions imposed.

Americans can travel visa-free to most sovereign Oceanic states and self-governing, non-independent islands, including French Polynesia and New Caledonia, which are part of France, and the Cook Islands, which belong to New Zealand.

They even enjoy freedom of movement across State-Governed collectivities.

The two ‘big' countries in Oceania, Australia and New Zealand, do not grant unrestricted entry to Americans on the basis of holding a U.S. passport alone: applicants must have an Electronic Travel Authorization before boarding.

This is an easy requirement to fulfill, however, as it is easily obtained online, and it does not equal a visa. As for the rest of the Oceanic destinations, bar three – Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, and Nauru – presenting an American passport at the border is generally all the documentation you need.

Dubai: If you are in the UAE on a visit visa sponsored by your family member or friend who is a UAE resident, did you know that you can extend the visa for up to 90 days? Visit visa holders have different options to extend the visa that they are on, but the duration of the extension varies depending on the type of visa you have. For example, if you are on a tourist visa, you can apply for a 30 day extension .

The option to visit the UAE on a visa sponsored by a family member or friend was introduced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) on February 15, 2023 . In the announcement, ICP also mentioned that if a UAE resident sponsors his or her family member or friend, they can use the visa extension service, allowing the extension of the visa “for a period of 30, 60, and 90 days”.
