ESTA for Business Purposes

Updated: Jan 20, 2024  | Tags: ESTA for Business , ESTA Requirements

ESTA is a convenient travel authorization for business travelers visiting the United States that can be used by individuals who hold a passport from a visa waiver member country . An ESTA can be used for a variety of business activities such as attending job interviews, business-related research activities, consulting with business associates, traveling for a scientific, educational, professional or business convention or conference, negotiating a contract or settling the affairs of an estate.

ESTA for Business Purposes

Examples of situations where an ESTA would be suitable for business purposes

You hold a passport from one of the 41 visa waiver countries, and you’re a technology developer or enthusiast flying from London, and want to attend the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada for a few days as a visitor. In this example, an ESTA would be a suitable travel authorization.

An HR manager is in charge of arranging travel for a staff of engineers in Germany, all of whom are German passport holders. These engineers need to visit a U.S. client site for a week and will continue to be paid a salary by their German employer. In this example, the HR manager could apply for an ESTA on behalf of the German engineers.

A Swedish passport holder and entrepreneur, running a Swedish company, wants to visit the United States for four days to negotiate a contract with a U.S. supplier or customer. If the entrepreneur’s activity is through his/her own Swedish company, then an ESTA could be a suitable travel authorization for such business purposes.

What other kind of work can I do in the U.S. on an ESTA?

An ESTA can be used to work for your employer in a limited capacity, as long as your income is from a non-U.S. source. Your employer also needs to be either a U.S. citizen who is based abroad but is temporarily visiting the United States, or a foreign citizen who is based in the United States but has a B, E, F, H, I, J, L, M, O, P, or Q category visa.

Other ESTA Requirements

Travelers wishing to obtain an ESTA for business purposes should review the ESTA requirements before applying as well as the details of the Visa Waiver Program .

Denials and Ineligibilities

ESTA denials cannot be appealed. Applicants that have been denied or are ineligible for ESTA can still apply for a B-1 business visa.

Restrictions

Extending your stay or changing status – you may not extend an ESTA or apply to switch to a visa category while in a United States territory. Any other visa applications or subsequent ESTA applications must be submitted outside the United States. Applicants would jeopardize future visa or ESTA applications by not departing the United States before 90 days have passed since they arrived in a U.S. territory on an ESTA.

Purpose of travel – ESTA cannot be used if a traveler is intending to study for academic credit, work for payment from a U.S. source, or work as a contributor in the press, such as a role in radio, print, film, or any other form of media. ESTA cannot be used for any form of paid competitive or exhibition performance in front of a paying audience. Lastly, an ESTA cannot be used as a way of obtaining residency on a permanent or temporary basis, other than the 90 days granted under the Visa Waiver Program.

Admissibility

An approved ESTA does not guarantee admission into the United States for business purposes. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has the authority to deny any ESTA approved traveler entry into the United States. Denials at the border could be due to reasons such as failing to declare goods or merchandise, providing misleading information on an ESTA application form or any other reason deemed as a possible immigration or safety and security risk to the United States. If you are denied admission at the border, you will not be granted rights for an appeal.

ESTA can be used for a variety of business purposes, thereby providing a useful travel authorization for U.S. bound employees, employers and entrepreneurs. Several important restrictions apply to the nature business activity or work that can be performed on ESTA, thus travelers should carefully review the ESTA requirements to ensure their travel purpose will be permitted.

Esta business travel rules.

  • July 27, 2023

Visa-free travel to the USA is generally preferred by business travellers since it requires substantially less planning, expense and effort than having to obtain a US visa .

However, only qualifying individuals may take advantage of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Among the eligibility requirements for the VWP is that the individual is a national of a qualifying VWP country, that have been granted ESTA approval , that they will stay in the US for no longer than 90 days and that their reason for travel is permissible.

If you are denied ESTA , you cannot travel visa-free and cannot appeal the decision. You will instead have to apply for a relevant US visa, such as the B-1 business visitor visa, and potentially also a waiver of inadmissibility if the denial was on the grounds of a past criminal conviction .

ESTA travel for business purposes

While the VWP permits certain business-related activities, these are extremely limited and business travellers should be aware that they may be questioned at the border as to their reasons for travel.

Even where ESTA is granted, this does guarantee entry into the US. Where immigration officials are not satisfied that your plans fall within the permitted activities for visa-free travel, you may be refused admission into the US, with no rights for an appeal. This refusal will be filed on your records and could lead to issues with any future US immigration applications or attempts to enter the USA. As such, if you’re planning to travel on business, it’s important to ensure your reason for travel is permitted under the VWP, and where not eligible, that you secure the relevant visa in advance of travel.

What are the permissible ESTA business activities?

Provided you hold valid ESTA authorization , the following activities will be permissible for visa-free travel to the US:

  • Attending business meetings
  • Consulting with business associates
  • Attending business convention, conference or trade show as a delegate
  • Negotiating contracts
  • Project scoping
  • Attending short training programs
  • Visiting relatives

Carrying appropriate paperwork with you when you travel, supporting your planned activities, accommodation and travel arrangements is recommended as you may be asked questions at the port of entry. This could include a letter from your employer on company letterhead, detailing your itinerary and reason for travel.

Non-permissible business activities

If entering the USA visa-free, travellers are not authorised to carry out productive work, regardless of where the employer is located. This means you cannot work or undertake paid or gainful employment or study during your period of ESTA stay.

Conducting leadership and management training seminars or other training events, is also not permissible under the VWP.

For any of the above activities, you will need to apply for the relevant US visa.

What is the difference between permissible ESTA business activities and employment?

The key points of differentiation are that VWP activity should not deprive a US resident worker of employment opportunity and that the traveller will not be remunerated from a US-based source.

How long is ESTA valid?

If you have been granted ESTA approval, this last two years or up to the date of your passport’s expiry, whichever is earlier.

This means you can travel to the US under the VWP for multiple trips, provided your passport remains valid and your reason for travel is within the permissible activities.

In addition, each individual stay can be no longer than 90 days and you cannot spend more than a total of 180 days in year in the US under the VWP.

Importantly, ESTA does not grant the holder permission to remain in the US for two years.

If your ESTA validity expires during your time in the US, this will not affect your 90 day period of stay.

However, remaining in the US beyond your ESTA permitted stay of 90 days will be deemed overstaying and is likely to impact your future US immigration applications.

Can you renew ESTA authorization?

Once you have been granted entry into the US under the VWP, your authorization period begins on this date. It will not be possible to apply to extend the 90-day limit, or to change your status by applying for a US visa, from within the US.

You must leave the US on or before the date stated on your admission stamp.

If you intend to make a new visa application or to reapply for ESTA, you will have to do this from outside the USA.

Can you reset the clock on the 90-day limit?

Leaving the US temporarily every 90 days is not an approach that would generally be advocated. It is likely to raise questions at the border as to your intentions and planned activities while in the US being within the scope of the VWP.

Note also that you cannot reset the 90-day ESTA clock by leaving the US for a neighboring country such as Canada or Mexico and returning shortly after. This time will be counted within the ESTA authorization period.

Does frequency of travel matter?

Frequent ESTA travellers may find they attract the attention of border officials but provided your activities fall under the VWP and you can explain if asked at the border as to your plans for the trip, there shouldn’t be an issue being granted entry.

If you are uncertain about your eligibility and use of ESTA for business purposes, taking advice will help to avoid issues at the border or disruption to your planned activities. In some cases, this may mean making an application for an appropriate visa before you travel, for example, if you are a media professional travelling on assignment. Visa Waiver Program and ESTA application

The Visa Waiver Program allows citizens of participating countries to travel to the U.S. for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa.

If you are a citizen of a country participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), you must meet the eligibility requirements to travel to the U.S. under the program. You will also need authorization through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before beginning your trip. Learn about the VWP and ESTA application process and other documentation you will need to enter the U.S.

How to request a travel authorization to the U.S. through ESTA

Check the list of countries that participate in the Visa Waiver Program  to see if your country is included.

Confirm that your passport meets the program requirements. You must have an  electronic passport or “e-Passport”  to participate in the VWP. This type of passport includes a chip.

Complete the  ESTA application  online.

Pay the fees: The total cost is $21. When you apply, you will pay a $4 processing fee. If you are approved to travel to the U.S., you must pay an additional $17 authorization fee.  Learn about the payment options available to pay ESTA fees.

When you complete and submit the form and processing fee, you will get an ESTA application number. Use that number to  check the status of your application . It may take up to 72 hours to find out if you are authorized to travel to the U.S. under the VWP.

Each approved ESTA application is generally valid for two years and allows multiple visits to the U.S. within that period without having to apply for another travel approval. If your passport expires in less than two years, you will receive an ESTA approval valid until the passport's expiration date.

When you travel to the U.S. for tourism or business under the VWP, you may stay up to 90 days per visit.

If you have questions about the ESTA and VWP application process, visit the  U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) FAQ page .

Other travel documents you will need to enter the U.S.

Even if you qualify for the VWP, you will need to bring a passport from your country of citizenship to enter the U.S. Generally, your passport must be valid for six months beyond the date you will exit the U.S. unless your country has signed an agreement with the U.S. Learn more about "Six Month Club Requirements."

When you enter the U.S., officials at your port of entry will issue you a Form I-94W, an electronic record of your entry date. Learn more about I-94W and how to apply .

What to know about the US ESTA 'visa' — when to get it, how to apply and how much it costs

Jordan Waller

If you're traveling to the U.S. any time soon and you're a citizen of the United Kingdom or Europe, it's quite likely that you'll need to apply for an ESTA before you visit.

Short for Electronic System for Travel Authorization, applying for an ESTA might seem daunting if you've never done it before. Don't worry — we have you covered.

Below we break down everything you need to know about applying for an ESTA, from how much it will cost and approval times to when you should renew it and when you need to consider applying for one.

Related: What to know about the ETIAS 'visa' — when to get it, how to apply and how much it will cost

What is the ESTA 'visa'?

An ESTA is an automated part of the Visa Waiver Program that allows visitors from specific countries to visit the U.S. Visitors must be citizens of countries classed as part of the U.S. visa waiver list to be eligible for an ESTA application. Currently, 40 countries are included on the list, including the U.K. and much of Europe.

ESTA holders can visit the U.S. for a period of 90 days or less without the need to apply for a standard visa if their visit is either a vacation or a business trip.

ESTA was initially rolled out by the U.S. in 2008 to allow the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Borders Protection to use authorized databases to pre-screen visitors to the country. It also allows the easier identification of terrorists, criminals and banned flyers, and is designed to help prevent such people from entering the country. It can also help identify those who may be a risk for overstaying their visits.

Is an ESTA a visa?

No, an ESTA is not a traditional visa and instead is classed as a visa waiver. As such, the application process is much more straightforward than applying for a traditional visa, and eligible travelers can do so by filling out a short online application on ESTA's official website.

The form requires applicants to share basic personal information, travel history and other simple security questions. Applications are usually processed within 72 hours.

Who needs to apply for an ESTA?

can you travel for business on an esta

You'll need to apply for an ESTA if you are a citizen of a country classed as part of the U.S. visa waiver program, which includes the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, among others. You can view the full list of the 40 eligible countries on the DHS website .

If you are visiting the U.S. from one of these countries as part of a vacation or business trip that is set to last for 90 days or less — and you are arriving by either plane or cruise ship — you can apply for an ESTA.

If you already hold a visa for visiting the U.S., you do not need to also apply for an ESTA. Additionally, if you are only briefly stopping in the U.S. to catch a connecting flight or ship before moving on to your final destination, know that you will still be required to apply for an ESTA, regardless of how brief your stay is.

How much does an ESTA cost?

can you travel for business on an esta

The ESTA application fee is $21; you can pay this fee online after filling out your application form. The fee was increased from $14 in May 2023, and its current pricing will remain in effect until September 2027.

Valid payment methods include:

  • American Express
  • Discover (JCB or Diners Club only)

Your application will not be submitted for approval until your payment has been received.

How do you apply for an ESTA?

can you travel for business on an esta

You can only apply for an ESTA online. Find the official site here .

You will be asked to accept various terms and upload an image of your passport during your application. After uploading an image of your passport, you will also be asked to share your passport information, valid email address and other standard personal details, along with information regarding your upcoming and previous travel history.

If applicable, you may also be required to share details about your employment; aliases or other names; a national ID or personal ID number; your Global Entry, Nexus or Sentri ID number; and the name, addresses or phone number for any U.S. points of contact.

When do I need to apply for an ESTA?

Your ESTA application can be submitted at any time before you travel to the U.S. However, the DHS advises you to apply at least 72 hours before travel to allow time for processing ahead of departure.

How long does an ESTA application take to be approved?

In TPG's experience, an ESTA application can often be approved on the same day you apply, though it can sometimes take up to 72 hours to be processed. We recommend applying at least a week or two before traveling to allow time for the application to be approved.

How long is an ESTA valid for, and will I need to apply for each trip to the US?

Once approved, your ESTA will be valid for two years from the date it was authorized or until the date your passport expires — depending on which comes first. You will not be required to apply for a new ESTA for each subsequent visit to the U.S. as long as any trips fall within the two-year validity period.

If you acquire a new passport or change your name, sex or citizenship after having your ESTA approved, you must submit a new application for approval.

How can I check my ESTA status?

can you travel for business on an esta

If you have applied for an ESTA and want to check its status, you can do so by visiting the ESTA website and selecting "Check ESTA Status."

If you are checking your own application, click "Check Individual Status." You will then be asked to supply either your passport number, date of birth and application number or your country of citizenship and passport issue and expiration dates.

To check the status of a group application, click "Check Group Status." From here, you will be asked to supply your group ID, family name, first (given) name, email and date of birth of your group's point of contact.

You will then be able to see the current status of your ESTA, which will fall into one of three categories:

  • Authorization Approved — meaning your application was successful, and you are authorized to travel to the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program
  • Travel Not Authorized — meaning your application was unsuccessful, and you're not authorized to travel to the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program
  • Authorization Pending — Your travel authorization is still under review and should usually be determined within 72 hours

Note that while in most cases you will be fine entering the U.S. once your application is approved, having an ESTA alone does not guarantee admission. Your final entry will be at the discretion of the CBP officer at your destination.

Bottom line

If you are traveling to the U.S. from the U.K. or other countries eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, you must apply for an ESTA at least 72 hours before your departure if you are not already approved.

Your ESTA will cost $21 and will be valid for two years from its authorization date. If you already have an ESTA, it's wise to check its status before any trips to the U.S. to ensure it's still valid.

What constitutes ‘permissible activities’ under ESTA or the B-1 Business Visa?

With both the US and UK seeking ever closer ties post-Brexit, and discussion of a possible free trade agreement, one of the biggest questions for our clients is: how do our employees facilitate this increase in trade when there are such restrictive immigration regulations?

One of the areas of greatest confusion across individuals and businesses is, while entering on ESTA or a B-1 Business Visa, what constitutes “permissible activities”?

Under ESTA / B-1 Business visa you may not accept employment or remuneration from a US source and may not perform productive work even if it is unpaid. However, you may, when entering under an ESTA / B-1 (business visitor) visa, carry out certain restricted business activities, which are not considered for immigration purposes to amount to “gainful employment”. This does not mean that you may work provided it is not paid – generally you may not engage in any productive work – paid or otherwise. The only reimbursement you may be permitted to receive will be an expense allowance or expenses incidental to your temporary stay (the latter will apply in specific circumstances) [1] .

The Department of State further clarifies this by outlining that the ESTA or B-1 Business visa can be used for a variety of business activities including:

  • Business-related research activities;
  • Consulting with business associates;
  • Traveling for a scientific, educational, professional or business convention or conference;
  • Negotiating a contract or;
  • Settling the affairs of an estate [2] .

However, despite the above, an approved ESTA / B-1 Business Visa does not guarantee admission into the United States – it simply gets you to a port of entry.  Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has the authority to deny any approved traveller’s entry into the United States and denials at the border could be due to any number of reasons, including: providing misleading information on an application, entering for an extended period of time, entering too frequently or, any other reason deemed as a possible immigration or safety and security risk to the United States. If you are denied admission at the border, you will not be granted rights of appeal [3] .

At Davies Legal, we are regularly approached by businesses and individuals where applicants have secured an ESTA / B-1 Business visa to undertake work above and beyond what is permissible and / or enter the US too frequently or for too long of a duration, without consulting a lawyer. These actions will often be to the detriment of the business and their employees, where punishments can involve a ban of three years or even more. Consequently, our advice is always to seek the appropriate employment authorised visa, including, but not limited to, B in lieu of H1-B, E-1, E-2, E-3, L-1 and O-1

At Davies Legal, we represent clients in connection with all types of immigrant and non-immigrant visa applications. We offer competitive fixed fee billing and an assurance that your case will be handled only by your designated, fully licensed US immigration attorney. Call now for a free no obligation quote.

With respect to a “country” or “countries” participating in VWP, it should be noted that the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, Pub. L. No. 96-8, Section 4(b)(1), provides that “[w]henever the laws of the United States refer or relate to foreign countries, nations, states, governments, or similar entities, such terms shall include and such laws shall apply with respect to Taiwan.” 22 U.S.C. § 3303(b)(1).  Accordingly, all references to “country” or “countries” in the Visa Waiver Program authorizing legislation, Section 217 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, 8 U.S.C. 1187, are read to include Taiwan.  This is consistent with the one-China policy of the United States, under which the United States has maintained unofficial relations with Taiwan since 1979.

Doing Business in the USA: ESTA or Visa?

ESTA

  • November 12, 2021

can you travel for business on an esta

The USA opened its borders again on 8 November, meaning business trips and holidays to The States are possible again. Here, we’ll briefly go over what travel permit you need for a business trip to the US: an ESTA or a work visa.

First figure out exactly what you’ll be doing This may sound like an obvious thing, but it can make quite a bit of difference and save you a fair bit of money. The reason for this is that you don’t always need a specific work visa to do business in the USA. An ESTA often suffices. Applying for any kind of visa is a very lengthy procedure, often taking weeks if not months. In comparison, an ESTA is often approved the same day.

The ESTA, however, has very specific requirements on what kind of business you can do in the USA.

Doing business with an ESTA The following business-related work is allowed when travelling on an ESTA:

  • Attending a fair or conference
  • Meeting with (potential) business partners
  • Providing goods or services
  • Negotiating with customers or suppliers

In fact, you can do quite a bit more with an ESTA. The one important thing you have to keep in mind is: You can’t enter into employment with a US employer. As long as you are not directly employed by them (meaning they also pay your salary), you have a lot of freedom when it comes to engaging in work-related activities in the USA.

However, even when not being employed by a US employer, there are still a few things you can’t do in the USA on an ESTA:

  • You cannot travel to the USA for the purpose of investing in US companies
  • You cannot start a company in the US yourself
  • You cannot perform a company takeover
  • You cannot engage in journalism or media activities

Other ESTA requirements Of course, you also need to keep in mind the remaining ESTA requirements . While the ESTA is a lot cheaper and is approved much faster than a visa, this is in part due to stricter rules. For example, you may not have a criminal record. This instantly disqualifies you from getting an ESTA. Similarly, you cannot have been in a number of specific countries since 2011, such as Iran, Iraq or Syria. The ESTA allows you to stay in the USA for up to 90 days, with an overall validity length of two years.

I can’t get an ESTA, what now? So you want to do business in the USA, but you can’t get an ESTA. Maybe you committed a crime in the distant past, or you need to perform work which is outside of the ESTA parameters. This does not mean you can’t travel to the US. You can always apply for a business visa. For example, you can get a B-1 business visa, or an H visa for specialized work. The US has over 185 different types of visa, so you’re bound to find the one suited for your business-related ends. You can apply for a US visa by filling out the DS-160 form . Afterwards, you will be invited for a short interview at the embassy.

WB Temporary Business Visitor under Visa Waiver Program

The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) enables nationals of 41 participating countries to travel to the United States for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less without obtaining a visa. Nationals of VWP countries must meet eligibility requirements to travel without a visa on the VWP. VWP travelers are required to have a valid authorization through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before travelling. Travelers are screened at the port of entry into the United States and are enrolled in the Department of Homeland Security’s US-VISIT program .

For information about the Visa Waiver Program, see the Department of State’s Visa Waiver Program.  Customs and Border Protection (CBP) also provides answers to Frequently Asked Questions on the Visa Waiver Program, see CBP’s FAQs About the Visa Waiver Program.

How to Apply for an ESTA – Everything You Need to Know

can you travel for business on an esta

If you are traveling to the USA, for business or pleasure, or even if you have a layover in the US, there is a good chance you can, and have to, apply for an ESTA.

But what is an ESTA visa exactly? How does applying for an ESTA work? And how long is an ESTA valid?

This article will walk you through the fundamentals of the ESTA and the specifics you need to know to travel to any location in the United States.

Applying for an ESTA

1. what is an esta.

an Italian passport to apply for an ESTA

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization, or ESTA, is a prerequisite for entry into the United States for citizens of countries that take part in the Visa Waiver Program .

Through this program, citizens of certain countries can travel to the United States for up to 90 days, on business or for leisure, without a visa.

So even though you’ll sometimes see it referred to as the ‘ESTA Visa’ it’s technically not a visa. It’s a form you fill in online.

You can apply for an ESTA at any time before you travel, but I’d recommend that you apply as soon as you start planning your trip .

The application process is quick and easy. It only takes a few minutes to complete. But we’ll get into more detail about how to apply for an ESTA later.

2. Who Can Apply for an ESTA?

two adults and a child traveling with an ESTA

To qualify for an ESTA you must:

● Have a passport from a qualifying country.

e-passport logo

● Have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after your planned departure from the USA.

● Be traveling to the USA for business, pleasure, or transit.

● Have a return ticket or other proof of leaving the country.

● Not have any plans to stay in the USA for more than 90 days.

Qualifying countries are countries that participate in the Visa Waiver Program. Currently, those countries are:

Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Chile, Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom.

When you meet all of these requirements, you can apply for an ESTA.

If you are traveling as a family, each member of your family, and that includes infants and children, must have their own passport.

Note: as you see, the list above includes transit. This means that even if you only have a short layover in the USA, and don’t plan to leave the airport, you will still need to apply for an ESTA.

Can You Really Travel to the USA for Business on an ESTA?

Well, you can, but only for certain business-related activities.

When traveling on an ESTA you are allowed to:

● Attend business meetings.

● Consult with business associates.

●  Attend business conventions, conferences or trade shows.

● Negotiate contracts.

But, you are not allowed to travel to the USA for paid work or study . For that, you would have to obtain an appropriate visa.

3. How to Apply for an ESTA?

the online form to apply for an ESTA

Applying for an ESTA is surprisingly uncomplicated and only takes a few minutes.

The official website to get an ESTA is esta.cbp.dhs.gov .

The only things you have to do is fill out an online form, pay an application fee of US$ 21, and wait to get the ESTA approved.

On the form, you will be asked for some basic information such as your name, address, date of birth, and of course your passport details.

You’ll also be asked a few questions about the destinations you plan to visit during your trip and whether or not you’ve ever been convicted of a crime.

If you are granted an ESTA you do not have to apply for any other visa for your trip to the United States.

But, an approved ESTA does not guarantee entry into the USA. The Customs and Border Protection officials at your port of entry have the authority to deny anyone admission to the United States.

4. How Long Does It Take To Get an ESTA?

After applying online you normally receive your ESTA within 3 days (72 hours).

Often you even receive your ESTA almost instantly.

But, to be on the safe side, it’s recommended to apply for an ESTA more than 72 hours before your planned departure.

5. How Long Is an ESTA Valid For?

drawing of two hands, one with a passport and one showing rejection to the passport

Now that you know how to get an ESTA, you might be wondering how long it will stay valid.

Your ESTA will remain active for two years, or until your passport expires , whichever comes first.

And, an ESTA is valid for multiple entries.

Each individual stay in the US can not be longer than 90 days, and you can only spend a total of 180 days per year in the US when you are using an ESTA.

If, for example, you get an ESTA when your passport is valid for another six months, then your ESTA will also only be valid for six months.

You have to apply for a new ESTA once you renew your passport or when you receive an emergency or temporary passport.

You will also have to apply for a new ESTA if you change your name, change your gender, change your country of citizenship, or have to change your responses to any of the “yes” or “no” questions on the ESTA application form.

6. What Are the Benefits of Having an ESTA?

There are two main benefits of having an ESTA.

First of all, applying for an ESTA is significantly cheaper than applying for any American visa.

Secondly, applying for an ESTA is a lot easier and takes a lot less time than getting any type of visa.

On top of that, the ESTA is valid for two years and for multiple entries, which is a great benefit if you are planning to visit, or even just fly through, the US more than once.

In short, if you qualify for an ESTA, it’s without a doubt the best visa, or technically visa waiver, to use for traveling to the USA.

Applying for an ESTA – Conclusions

a German passport on top of US Dollar bills

Yes, applying for any type of visa, including this visa waiver, can feel somewhat stressful.

But, I hope this article has answered all your questions about applying for an ESTA and shown you that it is quite an easy process.

Just make sure you apply early enough!

And if you do still have any doubts or other questions about getting an ESTA, feel free to leave a comment below.

I Always Fly Business Class. Here's What I Look for When Booking My Flights

W hen you fly in business class, you want to have the best possible travel experience. That's what you're paying for, after all, and it usually isn't cheap. For international flights, business-class airfare often costs $3,000 or more.

I'm big on enjoying my travels, so I always book business class. It's probably worth mentioning that I don't always pay in cash. I usually book expensive tickets with points from my travel credit cards -- I highly recommend getting this type of card if you like to travel.

Featured offer: save money while you pay off debt with one of these top-rated balance transfer credit cards

Since I travel in business class often, I've figured out which perks tend to be the most important. If you're wondering what to look for, here's my list every time I book a flight.

Lie-flat seating

On long-haul flights, business class may have either lie-flat seats or large recliner-style seats (similar to the seats in domestic first class). I've experienced both, and let me tell you, it's a world of difference.

If you're booking business class on a long flight, make sure it has lie-flat seating. It's so much more comfortable when you can turn your seat into a bed, and it makes sleeping much easier. Recliner-style seats are better than economy, but they still get uncomfortable once you've been sitting in them more than a few hours.

You can see if an airline has lie-flat seating in business class when booking your flight. Or, go to the website SeatGuru. Plug in the information for the flight you're interested in booking, and SeatGuru will show you the seating plan.

Lounge options in the departure airport

A business-class ticket normally gets you into one or more airport lounges . You'll likely have access to lounges operated by the airline and/or its partners.

Lounge quality varies, but it's pretty much always more relaxing to be in a lounge than the boarding area. And if you're flying internationally, there may be some top-tier lounges available. The business-class lounges in international terminals are often far nicer than what you'd find before a domestic flight.

If you have multiple flight options, I'd recommend checking out each airlines' lounges in your departure airport. If one airline offers a lounge and the other doesn't, or if one airline has more highly regarded lounges, that can help you decide which to choose.

The most direct route possible

One of my flight-booking rules is to get there as quickly and directly as possible. Most of us have limited vacation time. The less time you spend on travel, the more time you'll have to enjoy your vacation. Also, there's more chance of issues on flights with layovers. Each connection is another opportunity for a delay, a missed flight, or for checked baggage to get lost.

Some travelers book flights with more stops to save money. But if you're booking a longer flight to make business class more affordable, you might want to reconsider. You could probably save even more by just booking economy or premium economy on a shorter flight. Trust me, it's worth it.

A reputable airline

It's more than fair to have high expectations for business class. Whether you pay in cash or miles, you're paying a premium.

When there are multiple airlines to choose from, I like to read up on them before I book. I'll check J.D. Power satisfaction rankings, and I'll read reviews from passengers who have flown business class on those airlines.

Problems can happen with any carrier. You can't guarantee you'll have the perfect flight. But you can at least improve your chances by choosing an airline with a reputation for arriving on time and delivering a good passenger experience.

A reasonable price in either cash or miles

Business class tickets are more expensive than economy, but prices can vary quite a bit. I've seen tickets for over $5,000, but I've found others for under $1,000.

The same is true if you're booking with miles. Some tickets cost 30,000 to 60,000 miles each way. Others cost 100,000 to 150,000 miles each way, or more. For these award tickets, most airlines use dynamic pricing that's based on demand, so there can be a huge difference in prices for flights on different days or even just at different times.

There are business-class deals out there, especially if you have miles through a frequent flyer program or your credit cards . You're more likely to get a deal if you start shopping for flights early and if you're flexible about when you travel.

Business class has lots of perks, including many that I haven't mentioned here. For example, the food's better, but I don't base my travel plans around which airline has the best business-class menu. I've found that the items above have the biggest impact on my overall travel experience.

American Airlines is preparing for summer travel with new premium onboard amenities — take a look

  • American Airlines is launching its first rotating collection of premium amenities Memorial Day Weekend.
  • It includes a new front-row flagship suite, new bedding, and enhanced dining options.
  • The new amenity kit program will cycle skincare products and offer limited-edition specialty kits.

Insider Today

American Airlines is gearing up for summer travel with new luxury in-flight offerings for its customers.

American is launching its first rotating collection of premium onboard amenities over Memorial Day Weekend. It will be available on 300 international and transcontinental flights.

The offerings include new bedding, dining options, and an amenity kit program that lets premium passengers sample different skincare brands and products.

"We thoughtfully curate each element of the onboard experience so every customer can look forward to the time they spend in flight," American's vice president of customer experience, Kim Cisek, said in a statement. "Part of the magic of travel is connecting our customers to the people and experiences that matter most to them."

While most of the new amenities are being offered to premium cabins, main cabin passengers will also have access to new bedding and other seat enhancements.

Passengers in the main cabin will have access to 4K seatback screens, Bluetooth connectivity, and new charging ports. All customers will have access to 1,500 free entertainment content options and can use high-speed WiFi.

Passengers can kick back in the flagship suites with new privacy doors and chaise lounge positions.

Customers traveling in American's flagship suite seat will have access to wireless charging, Bluetooth capability, and multiple storage spaces.

Passengers traveling in premium economy can also enjoy new amenities like wireless charging, additional storage space, and privacy headrest wings.

Customers looking for more luxury can sit front row on the new Boeing 787-9 and 777-300 aircraft's flagship suite preferred seat.

The new seat offers customers additional space and storage. It will offer additional amenities for passengers' comfort, like a Nest Bedding mattress pad, a throw blanket, and a memory foam lumbar pillow.

The seat will also have Nest Bedding pajamas and an exclusive amenity kit featuring additional skincare products.

American used customer research to enhance its bedding in all cabins.

American decided to offer dual-sided pillows to flagship first and business class after research indicated 75% of its customers preferred different materials on each side of their pillows. The new pillow will have cool touch fabric on one side and traditional fabric on the other.

Travelers in flagship business class can now enjoy slippers onboard.

The slippers used to only be offered on ultra-long-haul flights.

Customers in all cabins will enjoy enhanced bedding, with cabin-specific offerings like lumbar pillows, throw blankets, premium duvets, and fleece blankets.

American says the new bedding packaging will save 25 tons of plastic waste a year.

American collaborated with inflight textile company John Horsfall to create bedding from recycled materials. Nearly all the pillows, duvets, and blankets were made with recycled fibers, and filled bedding will be 100% recycled.

Customers traveling in premium cabins will also receive their bedding in a reusable zipper bag made with recycled fibers to reduce plastic waste from distribution.

International business class passengers can try out new flavors inspired by international cuisine and American Airlines destinations worldwide.

American is offering new menu offerings to business class passengers on international US inbound and outbound flights.

Some of the meals include macadamia-crusted sea bass with citrus cream sauce, quinoa, toasted orzo, and haricot verts.

American is also offering enhanced dining options to domestic travelers in first class.

Customers can also choose from new preorder options.

Preorder options will continue to roll out this spring for business class on flights from the US to international destinations.

Business class, premium economy, and first class passengers can pre-order all of the meals offered to their cabins. The main cabin doesn't have pre-ordering available but passengers receive a complimentary in-flight snack and beverage. They can also purchase food through the buy-on-board program.

Passengers in premium cabins will also have access to the new amenity kit program.

American's amenity kit includes basic comfort amenities like a toothbrush, dental kit, eye mask, and earplugs. The kit will also cycle different skincare products and offerings in premium cabins.

American collaborated with beauty retailer Thirteen Lune to curate skincare offerings in the amenity kit.

The kit will feature high-quality beauty brands from Thirteen Lune's tailored collection. Passengers can scan a QR code in the kit to learn about each brand and partner featured.

Customers will receive the Thirteen Lune kit for the first few weeks of the kickoff to the new program.

Middle Managers Should Drive Your Business Transformation

  • Michael Mankins
  • Patrick Litre

can you travel for business on an esta

Shift your approach from top-down to middle-out.

Successful transformations harness the collective wisdom of middle managers and teams. To increase your company’s chances, you need to: 1) Enlist your very best middle managers. Transforming a business demands a blend of creativity and ingenuity. By setting this challenge you can also test and nurture the next generation of leaders. 2) Empower the middle to sponsor transformative changes. It’s imperative to actively encourage middle managers to bring forth innovative ideas and to provide adequate support when these managers propose significant changes. 3) Reward bold action and results. Successful transformation demands a fundamental reexamination of every aspect of a business to achieve breakthrough results. To achieve this, rewards must reinforce this need for wholesale change.

The conventional approach to business transformation — top-down directives coupled with bottom-up execution — isn’t working. Today, fewer than one in eight transformations yield lasting results, leaving seven in eight lacking sustained impact. While the traditional top-down method may aid in cost-cutting and efficiency, it fails to produce enduring breakthroughs in business performance.

Can a sole proprietor get a business credit card?

A small business owner who is a sole proprietor is eligible for business credit cards. Many business card applications allow you to use your social security number as your business tax ID and don't require you to have an LLC or other complicated business structure.

Can I use my EIN to get a business credit card?

You can use an Employer Identification Number (EIN) to apply for a business credit card as a sole proprietor. However, most business cards for sole proprietors require a personal guarantee, so reviews of your personal credit history and income are part of the application process.

Do business credit card applications verify personal income?

Most small business card applications require you to provide your personal income and social security number. The card issuer can use this information to determine your credit limit and whether you can afford the card's monthly payments.

Bottom line

Sole proprietors are eligible for most types of small business credit cards, including cards that earn cash-back, travel rewards and offer no-interest intro periods. You'll usually need a good to excellent credit score to qualify for the most rewarding cards, but if you have a lower credit score, some of the easiest business credit cards to get only require an average or fair credit score.
