Eagles Select Soccer is both a competitive and premier level soccer program offered to players in the Plain Local School District. Eagles Select consists of both, those players who have played competitive soccer, and those who have played recreational soccer and now want to move to the competitive level.

Players are pushed during our high level training sessions to become good confident soccer players. Players are taught foot skills, passing techniques, speed of play and game awareness. We work to provide the best training and game playing environment that fits best for the players level of play.

We offer both competitive and premier level of soccer. Games are both local and some local travel.

Canton Middle honors soccer coach of more than two decades

Apr. 24—On Monday night, Canton Middle School girls soccer hosted Hendersonville. While the 4-0 loss on the field was not the result the team was looking for, the night will still be a memorable one for all involved.

The Lady Bears still have a make-up game to play, but Monday's match was originally scheduled to be the regular season finale for Canton. Thus, the game was used as an opportunity to recognize the man who has led the soccer program in Canton for more than two decades.

Twenty-one years ago, Ricky Warren went from A.C. Reynolds Middle School to Canton Middle after 10 years with the Rockets.

Before Monday's game, Warren was recognized by current and former players, as well as parents and community members whose lives he had touched.

"I've been doing what the Lord called me to do for 31 years. I don't have the words to thank you guys enough," Warren said. "From the bottom of my heart, I thank you guys for coming out."

Several showed up to honor the coach who has dedicated 21 years to the athletes in Canton.

"The impact that I've had is pretty special," Warren said.

The ceremony was a surprise to Warren, who had been kept out of the loop of the plans.

"I had no idea this was happening or I would've been sick today," Warren joked. "I wasn't expecting any of this, but I appreciate everyone that came out and showed their support."

Former players shared the impacts the coach had on their lives. They told stories about Warren doing handstands on the sideline and his compassion for everyone around him.

Pisgah junior Kenna Lawing spoke about how Warren had driven her athletically.

"You pushed me, encouraged me and motivated me to be the best I could be," Lawing said.

Pisgah senior Evan Byrd said that Warren's influence stretched out beyond the soccer field.

"You wanted to do more than teach us how to play soccer," Byrd said. "You wanted to teach us how to be young men. You were an example for us. Whenever we won, you made sure we showed respect and when we lost, you made sure we kept our heads up."

While there were plenty of smiles and hugs, there were plenty of tears as well. Some of those tears came when Warren spoke of his good friend and colleague Steve Ledford, who passed away in September 2021.

Ledford and Warren had started together at Reynolds and moved to Canton together.

"It's a little bittersweet too," Warren said. "Coach Ledford and I started this journey 29 years ago and we were supposed to finish it together, but the Lord called him home."

Warren also thanked his parents and his brother for their influence on his life, as well as his wife, who he said was often having to take on additional responsibility because of his role as a coach.

Although the Lady Bears couldn't come out on top Monday evening, Canton still has one regular season game to makeup and the conference tournament. Warren is hoping the Lady Bears can get back on their home field at least one more time.

"Hopefully, if everything works out, our first round of the conference tournament should be at home," Warren said.

Monday After: When Canton was a pioneer in fluoridation

Flouride . Some call it a miracle element. Just add water.

It has come to us through the years in our drinking water with no small amount of controversy, however.

The debate continues, although perhaps with less frequency and vehemence than in the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and even into the 1970s, when some called fluoride "a real killer."

Debate over fluoride: National Institutes of Health gives pros and cons

Death from fluoride being introduced to our drinking water has not been documented in the decades since Canton was one of the first cities in the country to add it to its water supply.

Still, if you read a USA Today Network article by writer Mary Walrath-Holdridge, published recently in The Canton Repository, you'll know that many cities in Ohio and throughout the nation still are assessing the risks of fluoridation of municipal water supplies, accumulating evidence concerning the benefits of treating water with fluoride, and considering bans on fluoridation of public water.

Generally, officials of some communities in Ohio – and their constituents – are asking the question "Is fluoridated water still needed?"

"That's a difficult question," said Tyler Converse, superintendent of the City of Canton Water Department. "My understanding is that we were required (to add fluoride) many decades ago for the purpose of strengthening the teeth in young people, who were still developing.

"Now we have fluoride in toothpaste and there have been advances in dental care, so maybe it's less needed than decades ago," Converse reasoned. "But, I have no data of that from research."

The earliest archived reference to the wonders offered by flouride – when placed in water – printed in The Canton Repository appeared as a small item published Jan. 14, 1909.

“Messrs. Palerno and Cinngolani, the inventors of ... an antiseptic (of fluoride) employed in surgery, have found that a solution of one part in 500,000 of water will destroy all germs."

But, it wasn't until 1949 that another article noted Ohio residents connected to Lisbon schools were willing to consider health benefits of putting sodium flouride – in watered down amounts – in their children's mouths.

"The Parent-Teachers Association has launched a dental program for school children," an article in the Repository said on July 31, 1949, "and the use of sodium flouride for prevention of tooth decay is being studied."

Canton was first city in Ohio to fluoridate

The first communities in the United States to fluoridate were Newburgh, New York, and Grand Rapids, Michigan, both implementing the process in 1944.

Fluoride has been added to Canton's water since 1952, making the city the first major municipality in Ohio – smaller villages had preceded it – to have its water fluoridated. By comparison, Cleveland's fluoridation didn't begin until 1956.

"This is a big thing for Canton," said A.E. Ransom, then water superintendent. "The fluoridation idea has been termed an advancement in public health practice second only to the control of enteric diseases by water chlorination.

"The dental and medical associations locally are to be commended for their stand on this program," he added.

Ransom and Dr. H.W. McConnell, president at the time of the Canton Dental Society, stopped short of calling fluoride a "cure-all." Instead, they said it was "a method of treating teeth cheaply, easily and efficiently so they will have more resistance to decay," The Repository explained.

Tests at the time had allowed health officials to predict that "fluoridation will result in a 50% to 70% reduction in decay of teeth."

"Because teeth have completed calcification by the age of eight, the younger the individual when he starts drinking fluoridated water, the more benefit he will receive," the 1952 newspaper article said.

While experts seemed on board with Canton's fluoridation program, city fathers weren't sure about the opinion of those drinking the city's water. So, the program wasn't even announced for about a month.

"Inauguration of the program was not announced immediately because officials wanted to test newly installed equipment and also check public reaction to the innovation," said the article in The Canton Repository in March 1952. "Not one complaint about changes in odor or taste of Canton water has been received."

Canton's fluoridation was short-lived

Canton's water continued to contain fluoride from 1952 to 1959 when voters decided to discontinue the practice. Some city officials, once pioneer supporters of the process – and their constituents – became ardent opponents to the process.

"A postcard campaign has been launched here in opposition to the fluoridation of Canton's water supply," reported the Repository in March of 1958. "Councilman Anthony Rossetti (D-At-Large), chairman of City Council's water committee, and Stark County commissioners have received numerous postcards complaining about the use of fluoride in the water.

The newspaper cautioned, however, that opponents' fears were unfounded.

"Both medical and dental authorities agree that minute portions of fluoride added to a municipal water supply is not in the least harmful and that it serves as a deterrent to tooth decay, especially in young children."

Later that month, a pair of resolutions urging that a study be made of the use of fluoride in the city's water drew a large crowd to a council meeting. A pair of resolutions had been introduced to the council, one requesting a study of the use of the chemical and the other suggesting a study – and possibly a public vote – on whether Canton's fluoridation be discontinued.

By the 1970s, Ohio state law already mandated that cities with populations of more than 5,000 fluoridate water supplies, unless they held a special election to decide the issue.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the city defied a state order to again fluoridate its water. After its appeals were denied, it complied and returned to fluoridation. Canton's water has been fluoridated ever since.

Weighing benefits and risks

Criticism of fluoridation had continued through the legal wrangling, causing water and health officials, as well as residents, to weigh the benefits and risks of adding fluoride to drinking water.

A letter to the editor published on June 23, 1976, for example, called sodium fluoride "a dangerous poison."

"This is rat and insect poison. It's a real killer," the letter claimed. "Death has been caused by less than one grain. ... It might toughen kids' teeth but it also dulls the creative part of the mind."

Converse said that such an argument against fluoridation of water is not applicable to the current fluoridation process in Canton.

"Ours is a completely different chemical compound," he said. "We buy the product in liquid form and it goes into large fiberglass holding tanks at our three facilities. As we pump water we have a small pump that actually is a fluoride feed pump. We pump it in at a rate of one part per million gallons of water."

That dose of fluoride – essentially 1 milligram per liter – is equal to dissolving a half of an aspirin tablet in a bathtub of 50 gallons of water, according to one online source.

Much of the fear of fluoride also has dissolved over the years, noted Converse.

"We used to get questions about it," Converse recalled. "But, not so much anymore. And I've never seen or heard any direct evidence that our dose is a risk."

CANTON ‒ Stark County will see summer-like and possibly record-breaking temperatures today with a high near 84 degrees, according to the National Weather Service office in Cleveland .

Mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies are expected.

Monday night's forecast includes a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3 a.m. Expect increasing clouds with a low around 62 and a south wind at 6 to 8 mph. The chance of precipitation is 30%.

Warmth is expected to continue through the week with high temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Thursday's high is expected to be near 83, and Friday's, 82.

'Brat Pack' actor and travel writer Andrew McCarthy speaking at Canton Palace Theatre

Actor Andrew McCarthy, known for the '80s movies 'Pretty in Pink,' 'St. Elmo's Fire' and 'Mannequin,' will be speaking at 6:30 p.m. May 11 at Canton Palace Theatre.
McCarthy is a travel writer and author, including the New York Times bestseller, "Walking with Sam."
Admission to McCarthy's presentation is free but reservations must be made online through the Stark Library.

Actor Andrew McCarthy, known for his roles in the movies "St. Elmo's Fire" and "Weekend at Bernie's," is also a travel writer. McCarthy, who wrote the book, "Walking with Sam," will be the Stark County Library's guest author and speaker on May 11 at the Canton Palace Theatre.

Andrew McCarthy sounded every bit of four decades removed from his "Brat Pack" Hollywood glory days while discussing the 500-mile trek he took with his teenage son across the famed El Camino de Santiago in Spain.

Far in the rearview mirror were his starring roles in the '80s movies "Pretty in Pink," "St. Elmo's Fire" and "Weekend at Bernie's."

McCarthy was merely dad, not a celebrity. Sometimes dismissively referred to as "bro" by his 19-year-old son, Sam. Other times tapped for advice while the younger McCarthy grappled with the aftermath of a breakup from his girlfriend.

Along the blister-inducing journey in the summer of 2021, the father-son dynamic was often as bumpy as the rugged terrain. However, by the end, there were bonding moments, even transcendent ones, where the parent was schooled by the child.

Standing outside the splendor of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, the elder McCarthy was dejected because the portico was locked. Touching the Tree of Jesse was also forbidden due to erosion. Neither could he hug the statue of St. James.

"It's OK," the son said while draping an arm over his dad's shoulder. "This one truly was about the journey." Earlier on the trip, Sam had blown off similar advice from his dad. Now he espoused it.

Asked if such revelatory moments still happen with his son today, McCarthy turned to a recent anecdote.

"About three days ago, he called me up and said, 'Dad, you got seven minutes?' And I was like, 'Go,'" the father recalled with affection. "And he just wanted to work through something he was going through, and he just wanted to bounce it off me, and that's a phone call that probably wouldn't have happened if we hadn't of walked together."

McCarthy relays and explores those father-son moments profoundly, humorously and candidly in the New York Times bestselling book, " Walking with Sam: A Father, A Son, and Five Hundred Miles Across Spain ." His other works include " Brat: An '80s Story ," "Just Fly Away" and "The Longest Way Home."

McCarthy talked openly during a 25-minute phone call promoting a book tour that will bring him to the Canton Palace Theatre at 6:30 p.m. May 11 as part of the Stark County Library's Speaking of Books Author Series. McCarthy has lots to tell. So many films, so many Hollywood encounters, so many lessons learned, so many miles logged across the globe as an award-winning travel writer , including a stint as editor-at-large of National Geographic Traveler magazine.

During the interview, McCarthy touched on it all, plus some unexpected subjects, including what he thought of a Taylor Swift concert he attended with his teen daughter and which of his '80s movies most deserves a sequel.

Walking across Spain: 'It's a life-changing experience for anybody.'

McCarthy had walked the El Camino 25 years earlier while in the throes of a professional and personal crisis.

"It's just a place where I feel very at home in myself," he said of travel in general. "I often joke that the further from home I get, the more at home in myself I feel. The more out of my normal comfort zone I am, sort of the better I respond.

"The Camino was a transformative experience for me the first time I did it," McCarthy said. "... As my son was growing and our relationship was sort of evolving, I wanted it to evolve into like two men. How does one do that? I didn't have a template for that in m own life, so I thought (walking the Camino) would be a wonderful way to transition our relationship from dominant parent to submissive or rebellious kid to adult learning to communicate on an equal level. So I thought the Camino would sort of jumpstart that process, which it did."

Of "Walking with Sam," he said: "It's really about fathers and sons and your place in that and how do we manage that.

"And that's one of the great things about walking and walking that long of a distance," McCarthy said. "You can try to be however you're going to be, but yourself comes out pretty quickly when you're walking 15 miles and you've got blisters and you're tired and you need a place to sleep. You're you. That was just a great experience to share with (Sam) in that regard.

"On day two on the walk, he said, 'Dad, what's the point of this? And on the last day of the walk, he said, 'That's the only 10 out of 10 thing that I've ever done in my life,' so something happened."

The intimate relationship of author and reader

Being recognized and appreciated as a writer is rewarding, McCarthy said.

"I was lucky enough to be on TV and in movies," he said. "When people come up to you about a book, it's a very different thing, and it's much more personal in a certain way because you know it's a very intimate relationship with someone reading a book.

"They take you to bed at night usually, and they're alone with you in bed for an hour before they go to bed. And to ask someone for their time in that way, you have to sort of meet them and come clean with them."

And "I'll put down things on paper that strangers will read that I'd be very hesitant to say in the rest of my life," he added. "There's something about the act of writing that you disclose these kinds of things."

The 'Brat Pack' is an avatar 'of a certain generation's youth.'

McCarthy is clearly still more widely known for being a member of the "Brat Pack," however.

"I think it's kind of an amazing thing at this point," he said. "The 'Brat Pack' (actors and movies) are the avatars of a certain generation's youth.

"You look at those things and you start talking, 'Oh, I love that movie,'" he said. "You're talking about your own youth, and I come to represent that. I just hold up a mirror to that because there's no more exciting and wondrous time in life than when we're in our late teens and 20s. You're just cusping into your own life and you're taking the world by the tail, and your life's a blank slate to be written on, and it's a thrilling moment in life. And I and other members of the 'Brat Pack' and the other people who were in those movies represent that for a group of people.

"And it took me a long time, but I realize that's sort of a wonderful gift I've been given, to be that role for certain people, and there's great affection and fondness for those movies for me as well," McCarthy continued. "You know, they're flawed certainly (and from) another time, but I loved those movies."

McCarthy is open to a sequel to 'St. Elmo's Fire'

When asked which of his '80s movies deserved a sequel, McCarthy didn't hesitate − "St. Elmo's Fire."

"It always pops up occasionally," he said of the talk of a sequel. "Sure, I'm game. I love that character ( Kevin Dolenz ) in 'St. Elmo's Fire.' I thought he was a great character for me at that time in my life, and what happened to him 30 years later, I think that would be interesting.

"I mean, sure, why not," McCarthy said. "Somebody comes up with a good idea (and) has some money to do it.

"That character was really the closest to me of any of those characters I did when I was young. I had that sort of rotten before I was ripe cynicism to cover up my fear and vulnerability, I think. I really related to him a lot.

"Mostly people keep coming up with these 'Weekend at Bernie's' 3 ideas," McCarthy said with laughter. "I'm like, 'Dude, he's dead, he's still dead, he's been dead a long time. I have great affection for Bernie."

When does the 'Brat Pack' documentary come out?

Written and directed by McCarthy, the documentary , "Brats" is scheduled for release on the Hulu streaming service on June 12, McCarthy said.

The film will premiere on June 7 at the Tribeca Festival .

The 92-minute documentary follows up the book, "Brat: An 80s Story," authored by McCarthy and released in 2021.

"The 'Brat' book was just my my own sort of exploration of, 'Well, what the hell happened during that time?,'" he said of being thrust into stardom. "It was just a seminal moment in my life, and it was one that I sort of ran from for decades, and I finally just turned around and said, 'Well, what's under that rock?'"

The documentary, however, sought out answers and insights from his fellow "Brat Pack" actors, including Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore and Ally Sheedy.

"And so when I finished that (book), it was quite liberating in a certain way," McCarthy said. "But I felt, 'What in the hell did everyone else think?,' because I know it was life-changing for everybody... We hated that ('Brat Pack') label, and it was very pejorative at the beginning, and that it's come 180 degrees to represent this wonderfully iconic thing in pop culture is kind of a beautiful thing. So I wanted to go see what everyone else's experience was. So I just called up people I hadn't seen in 30 years, and I went to see them and just sort of brought a camera and chatted with them.

"I could call it a homemade movie," he added. "Some of it I shot on my iPhone. It's just very informal. There's lots of moments of sort of nostalgia as it were with clips from films and old interviews and songs and things, but it's also very much a look back from someone looking back at their youth from a period of no longer being young.

"So I was reconnecting with all the old gang as it were, which was fantastic. A big takeaway from that for me was all the affection we had for each other after all these years, where we didn't when we were young. We were young, competitive and scared and trying to start our careers, and it was a very fraught time, where as now, none of it matters anymore."

What do McCarthy's kids think of their movie star dad?

McCarthy said his kids have only seen a few of his films or snippets.

"Those are old ancient history things," he said.

"When they discovered that I did a movie with 'Iron Man' (Robert Downey Jr.) when they were young, they go, 'You worked with 'Iron Man!' They thought that was pretty impressive."

"My son ... when he was like 15, he watched 'Weekend at Bernie's,'" McCarthy recalled with laughter. "And he said, 'Dad, I love you, but that's the stupidest movie I've ever seen,' and I was like, 'That's the point.'"

"And my daughter, one of her classmates said she should watch 'Pretty in Pink.' And she watched the trailer online, and she said, 'I'm not going to watch some movie where you're kissing another woman; I don't want to see that,' so as it should be, I'm just their dad."

Is McCarthy a Swifty?

The actor and writer attended a Taylor Swift concert with his teen daughter, Willow McCarthy. She even surprised him with the gift of an outrageously glitzy sport coat for the event.

"To experience my daughter experiencing it was a beautiful thing for me, and I thought Taylor Swift was terrific," McCarthy said. "I've seen a lot of big shows in big stadiums, and I've never seen anybody be able to hold the crowd in one hand looking live and then at the same time on the Jumbotron being played intimately into the close-up.

"I thought she's able to do that in an extraordinary way. I've seen The Rolling Stones or Bruce Springsteen. They're just playing to the crowd … or they're mugging for the camera. But (Swift) was able to be intimate with the camera and yet expansive to the crowd at the same time, and I thought it was a real lesson in stardom. I thought it was great. I really enjoyed that."

McCarthy is working on his next book

McCarthy has been on the road working on his next book, which he describes as "a cross-country exploration on male friendship."

He's reuniting with friends in Kentucky, Dallas and San Francisco, people whom he hasn't seen in decades and knows from outside the spotlight of Hollywood.

"There's all sorts of documentation now about this recession in male friendship and all these kind of things," McCarthy said. "And particularly, the older men get the more isolated they become, and so I just found that very interesting … and have been traveling for the last few months sort of gathering that, which has been really interesting."

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow. Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. 2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

A few weeks into baseball season, no Livingston County batter has been hotter than Hartland junior Brayden Crowe.

Crowe went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs for the Eagles Wednesday during an 8-5 victory over Canton.

Crowe leads Livingston County with a .545 batting average, 19 runs batted in and nine doubles. Since going 2-for-9 to start the season, he’s hit a torrid .629 in his last 35 at-bats over 11 games.

Lucas Frack went 3-for-4, while Bobby Griffon was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Hartland (10-6-1).

Michael Bernardi pitched three shutout innings of relief, striking out five.

Down 5-3 after four innings, Hartland scored two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh.

9 Places to See the Summer Olympics Without Setting Foot in Paris

You may have trouble finding accommodations or tickets to events in Paris, but other destinations around France are hosting sports like soccer, sailing, basketball and surfing.

For sports fans, Paris will be the center of the universe this summer — and with 15 million Olympic and Paralympic visitors expected, it will feel like it, with crowds and high prices. But Paris isn’t the only Olympic site in France: Nine destinations outside the metro region are also hosting events, giving travelers a way to catch some action without getting caught up in the crush.

In places like Bordeaux, Marseille and even Tahiti, you can watch top athletes compete in soccer, basketball, sailing and surfing. (Tickets have been added in batches, so if the ones you want aren’t available, keep checking the ticketing site, tickets.Paris2024.org . If all else fails, the official resale platform opens on May 15 .)

And when you’re not watching sports, you can take advantage of museums, parks, design centers, and fresh food and wine options. In Nantes, you can even ride a mechanical elephant.

Here are some ideas for planning your own alternative Olympic trip.

Basketball: July 27 to Aug. 4; tickets from 50 euros ($54).

Handball: Aug. 6 to 11, tickets from €45.

Start with a stroll around Vieux-Lille and a coffee in the Grande Place, taking in the colorful facades of this city near the Belgian border. Head over to the St.-Sauveur area to see the Art Deco belfry and exhibitions at Gare St.-Sauveur , a former train station. On Sundays, at the rambling Wazemmes market , about 400 vendors offer produce, fish, plants, fabrics, textiles and leather goods. Head out to Parc du Héron , east of the city, to see the LaM museum (€7), with works by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani and Joan Miró. Lille is better known for beer than for wine, and the Brasserie Gobrecht offers brewery tours every Saturday (reservations recommended).

Soccer: July 24 to Aug. 2; tickets from €24.

Capital of a region best known for its wine, this small southwestern city sells local wine-walk maps at its tourist office. Stop by the Marché des Capucins , a local indoor market that also houses Bistro Poulette , a slightly chaotic and very delicious spot serving moules-frites, or mussels with fries. In the afternoon, check out the Bassins des Lumières (€15), the largest digital art center in the world, and the Cité du Vin (€21), which offers wine-tasting experiences. To wind down in a quiet wine bar, try Yarra , or for a cocktail, Symbiose . If you have time for side trips, spend a day in St.-Emilion, about 27 miles away, where you can sample great wines. Or check out the nearly 340-foot-high Dune du Pilat , the tallest sand dune in Europe — about 37 miles southwest of Bordeaux, near the beach town of Arcachon.

The street signs in Nantes are in both Breton and French, reflecting the city’s historical ties to Brittany. Start at Talensac Market for picnic supplies, especially radishes, local cheeses and strawberries. Pick up local delicacies like Gâteau Nantais (almond poundcake) and Far Breton (flan with Armanac-soaked prunes). Take your picnic lunch to the courtyard of the Château des Ducs de Bretagne , a medieval castle and museum (courtyard is free; museum is €9). On the Île de Nantes, a former shipyard has been transformed into a wild mechanical theme park. The Machines de l’Île mixes Jules Verne’s stories with Leonardo da Vinci’s designs in the form of a ridable mechanical elephant and sea creatures (€9.50 for the elephant ride or gallery visit). The Mémorial de l’Abolition de l’Esclavage (free) covers Nantes’s history as the most active slave-trading port in 18th-century France. The artists behind the glass-and-concrete memorial, Krzysztof Wodiczko and Julian Bonder , aimed to create “a metaphorical and emotional reminder of the primarily historical, but also very current, struggle for the abolition of slavery.”

Châteauroux

Shooting: July 27 to Aug. 5; tickets from €24.

The small city not far from the Loire Valley is named for Château Raoul , the 10th-century castle that’s now part of a local official’s private residence. The best view of the château is from the Gütersloh Bridge. Follow the “coulée verte” — or green corridor — along the banks of the Indre River, stopping by Parc de Belle-Isle , which has a lake for swimming, with kayaks and stand-up paddle boards to rent, as well as a beach, playgrounds and camping. The Franciscan Cordeliers Convent (free), which dates to the 13th century, today offers contemporary art exhibits and miles of gardens, and the Bertrand Museum (free), a former 18th-century townhouse, showcases diverse collections in each of its 26 rooms, including the plaster original of the Camille Claudel sculpture “Sakuntala.”

To stay: Au Lys Blanc (€138); Les Rives du Château (€210 for a two-bedroom apartment).

Lyon and St.-Étienne

It will be easy to catch soccer matches in either Lyon or St.-Étienne, only an hour apart by train or car in east-central France. In Lyon, often called the gastronomic capital of France, visit the majestic Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica , then savor an ice cream at La Fabrique Givrée . Explore the city’s network of covered passageways, called traboules — originally for workers to transport textiles and later used during World War II by the French Resistance for clandestine meetings. Then climb up to the Pentes de la Croix-Rousse neighborhood, with its tiny streets, shops and views of Lyon below. On a clear day, you can even see Mont Blanc. The Lugdunum museum (€7) and the nearby Roman theater (€4) take visitors back to 43 B.C., when Lyon was known as Lugdunum, and La Maison des Canuts (€9.50), covers the city’s history as a capital of silk.

Between Lyon and St.-Étienne, Pilat Regional Natural Park offers more than 900 miles of rocky terrain for hiking and biking, culminating at the summit of 4,700-foot Crêt de la Perdrix , with views of the Alps and Massif Central range.

St.-Étienne, about 40 miles southwest of Lyon, is transforming its historical industrial identity into one of design and innovation. At the heart is the Cité du Design (€4.50), the former site of a weapons factory, which has served as a center for art and research since 2010. The complex, now a key economic force in the city, is open to the public year-round and hosts art and design exhibitions.

This Mediterranean port city mixes urban grit and natural beauty. Start by visiting Le Panier, the village-like oldest part of the city. Try navettes , a traditional orange flower biscuit, and sample some sardines or panisses , traditional chickpea fries, on a sunny terrace. Detour through the touristy but pleasant Old Port on the way to Mucem (€11), the first major museum dedicated to Mediterranean civilization and cultures. Have a pick-me-up at Deep Coffee Roasters , a specialty roaster tucked away between touristy shops. At sunset, climb up to Cours Julien , a hip neighborhood with beautiful views for your apéro. Don’t miss the Cité Radieuse , a UNESCO-listed apartment complex that shows off the architect Le Corbusier’s Modernist mastery (you can stay at the hotel in it). And just southeast of the city, the Calanques , a series of small, narrow coves , offer miles of oceanside trails and rocky scrambles along turquoise water.

Summer is peak season in Nice, the queen city of the French Riviera, where the mountains meet the Mediterranean. Run, bike or in-line skate along the Promenade des Anglais , a four-mile seaside path. Then climb up to the Colline du Château , a rocky hill east of the promenade with views of Nice and even as far as the Alps. For a longer walk, follow the trails from Coco Beach to the Cap de Nice along the coves. Then head to Cours Saleya , a pedestrian section of the Old Town, with flower stands, antiques and local food like the socca , a chickpea pancake. The Musée de Préhistoire Terra Amata (€5), constructed on top of an excavation site, reveals what Nice was like up to 400,000 years ago. Or just enjoy one of Nice’s pebbled beaches in a lounge chair.

Teahupo’o, Tahiti

Surfing: July 27 to 31 ( events could shift through Aug. 4, depending on surf conditions); fan zones free.

For surfing’s second Olympics since its debut in Tokyo, the competition takes place far from mainland France in Tahiti, part of French Polynesia. Since the wave is offshore, there will be two ticket-free fan zones — Taharu’u Beach and Paofai Gardens — to watch the events on large screens. A third fan zone at PK0 beach in Teahupo’o will have free tickets but limited access. Tahiti offers white sands and turquoise lagoons in addition to near-perfect waves. For snorkeling, try the lagoon near Maui Beach , five miles from Teahupo’o. For black volcanic sands, head to Taharu’u Beach, about 20 miles northwest of Teahupo’o. About 45 miles from Teahupo’o, Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia, with a population of about 26,000, offers a variety of local delicacies like poisson cru: raw fish with lime juice and coconut milk, served with rice. Sample local fare, including steak frites and skewered veal heart, from food trucks, called roulettes, at Place Vai’ete, on the waterfront, near the Papeete Market.

From NFL to Augusta National: Patrick Peterson Details His Dream Trip to 2024 Masters

Peterson had been to Augusta National previously, but it was never quite like his trip to the recent Masters Tournament. He shares his story exclusively with SI.

Just 615 miles from Canton, Ohio, lies a first-ballot Hall-of-Fame golf tournament on a first-ballot Hall-of-Fame golf course.

Yes, that’s an NFL analogy, but can you blame me? I'm about to start my 14th season in the league. But the Masters Golf Tournament, held annually at Augusta National, is a celebrated, world-renowned springtime event. I love it. I’ve been lucky enough in past years to both attend a Masters and play Augusta National, and this year, thanks to an invitation from Mercedes, I got to experience the 2024 Masters in a completely new way: as a Sports Illustrated correspondent.

During the NFL offseason, I live in Alpharetta, Ga., and my drive east to Augusta was as sweet as the famous Moonpies and White Chocolate Georgia Pecan cookies awaiting me at the Masters. I rolled in the new Mercedes Benz Maybach EQS 680 SUV. Not going to lie: that loaner Maybach may soon be in my garage as a full-time member of the Peterson family.

My accommodations were situated in a neighborhood exclusively rented for Mercedes guests. It was a wonderful neighborhood, which, set the tone for a weekend of elite golf and unmatched hospitality. My roommates were fellow golf enthusiasts and Masters of their own crafts: YouTube stars Rick Shiels and Seb Marc Michel-Brown. We had a blast sharing stories about our golf journeys — and they were lucky we didn’t get on the golf course for a match, or they would have been a few “pounds” lighter on their way back to London!

Nightly entertainment was star-studded. One evening featured a fireside chat with college football legend Nick Saban. Another night was a tasting event with actor Aaron Paul, who introduced his new tequila brand. I also had some fun chats with ESPN’s Michael Collins, who is hilarious and has a bunch of cool experiences and insight from his time as a media member. I was also surprised to bump into my former head coach from the Minnesota Vikings, Kevin O'Connell, which only added to the memorable experience. It was great to hear from him about the impact I had on the locker room during my time there, which meant a lot, and we also talked golf and cars. Speaking of cars, I also enjoyed a cocktail and cigar with Dimitris Psillakis, president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz North America. We talked more about that EQS 680 SUV loaner, and he also got me fired up for the EQS 680 Night Series, which he drives personally. That was definitely one of the highlights of my weekend.

In the past I’ve been lucky enough to drive down Magnolia Lane when I was invited by a member— that was never during a Masters week, of course. But this year the hospitality house was near the gates so in the mornings I strolled over to a shuttle alongside other Mercedes guests, and we were then zipped right up Magnolia Lane to start our day.

That ride was unreal, and it also brought me closer to golf legend and long-time Mercedes-Benz ambassador Bernhard Langer.

At 66, Langer’s passion for golf and thrill of competition remains strong. Despite his age and recent injury, he maintains a firm belief in continuous improvement—a philosophy that resonates with my own 13-year NFL career, where I believe that constantly evolving and finding areas to improve is key to my success. I try to carry that same philosophy as a husband and father … and as an aspiring pro-celebrity golfer.

Langer and I talked about his special connection with Augusta National. He fell in love with the course on his first visit and was immediately blown away by the course’s demanding greens. He always felt that if he could master (excuse the pun) his putting stroke there, he could succeed anywhere in the world. He also said golfers are often seen as “mad scientists” who never stop tinkering with their gear, and their games, all in search of even the slightest competitive edge.

Langer also revealed that the 2025 Masters would mark his 40th and final appearance at the tournament. He said that Augusta’s chairman, Fred Ridley, offered him the chance to play as long as he desired, but Langer wants to compete and contend. With the course now stretching to lengthier yards every year, he feels the physical demands might surpass his competitive capabilities. Langer plans to have his son caddie for him to make his last Masters a special family moment.

This resonated with me because like Langer I am motivated not just to play football, but to compete and contribute to a championship. Once I can no longer meet that standard, I feel comfortable with my body of work.

I really connected with Langer through our shared philosophies on competition and longevity in sports. That conversation was on Masters Saturday, and was a perfect lead-in for a Sunday afternoon following the GOAT of the sport, Tiger Woods. I could not help but wonder how long Woods will put himself through the grueling physical challenge of the Masters. He’s a competitor, but Augusta National is a tough walk.

The 2024 Masters undoubtedly goes down as one of my favorite sporting experiences, and my gratitude to Mercedes is as profound as the legacy of the Masters itself. Until next time.

After the Party review – one of the greatest performances in any TV show in years

Robyn Malcolm is incredible in this morally complex drama, as a woman who believes she saw her ex-husband sexually assault a minor

S ome fraught and morally complex spaces are entered in the six-part New Zealand drama After the Party, which is executed with a white-knuckle intensity that almost pushes it into the realm of a thriller. The show is led by an expertly layered performance from Robyn Malcolm as Penny Wilding, a high school teacher who believes she caught her ex-husband, Phil (Peter Mullan), engaged in a sex crime with an intoxicated minor during his birthday party. The easy choice would have been not to show it but, like her, we see the moment around which the show pivots.

Penny is convinced she is right about what she saw and she’s not the kind of person to let things go. At first I found her character thoroughly likable; one early scene depicts her in a classroom explaining pornography to young male students straightforwardly and empathetically: she’s clearly a teacher who thinks outside the box, though not in the extravagant stand-on-the-desk, Oh Captain My Captain sort of way.

But then I began to feel the show – co-created by Malcolm and Dianne Taylor, and directed by Peter Salmon – challenging my initial assumptions and nudging us towards the possibility that Penny is potentially an unreliable witness. After the Party isn’t really about whether she is right or wrong – although eventually it arrives at quite precise conclusions, which for me were its least interesting aspects. Far more intriguing are the dramas created by Penny’s assumptions and dogged advocacy.

Phil returns to Wellington after living in Scotland for five years and moves in with their daughter Grace (Tara Canton). This sparks a renewed desire in Penny to see him punished, or at least for her impression of events to be vindicated. But not a single other person at the titular party – including Grace and the alleged victim, Ollie (Ian Blackburn) – agree with her interpretation.

Part of the show’s appeal is that people are likely to see different things and ponder different questions. Is it ethical to pursue allegations that deeply traumatise an alleged victim, even when they’re adamant that nothing untoward took place? Is it about being wrong for the right reasons … or right for the wrong ones?

I was swept away by this drama, feeling almost corporally immersed in this world. But I wondered if there was something missing from the script: an additional event from the past, for instance, that might help contextualise Penny’s perspective. On the other hand, being coy about aspects of the characters’ pasts and remaining more or less in the moment – notwithstanding intermittent flashbacks to the night in question – gives the writers (Taylor, Martha Hardy-Ward, Emily Perkins and Samuel E Shore) another opportunity to play with us. Again, certain questions beckon. For instance: does Penny know something we’re not being told?

I smashed through all six episodes in a day and, while I won’t go into detail, I was in two minds about its conclusion, which reaches for the kind of denouements so shrewdly avoided until that point, minimising some of the elements that distinguish this series from more conventional offerings. But it’s rousing throughout and admittedly the writers faced various challenges, including the conundrum of delivering finality versus open-endedness.

Stylistically, After the Party is fashioned by Salmon to not draw attention to itself. The colours are a little washed out, but not too much. It’s cut in naturalistic ways, embracing editing as “the invisible art”. The idea being that the best kind of editing goes unnoticed, leaving the viewer to sink into the narrative and forget they’re watching a mediated experience. We see that logic reflected elsewhere: in the gently handheld camerawork, and in performances that feel intensely lived-in, as if the actors have occupied these characters for decades.

No one impresses more than Malcolm, who really gets under your skin and pinches you from the inside. The anguish she feels for being alone in her beliefs makes her increasingly desperate; watching Malcolm illustrate her reach and reach and reach is exhilaratingly painful. It’s no overstatement to say that this great performance ranks among the best television portrayals in years, from anywhere in the world.
