The Capital One Travel portal is an online travel platform that allows customers to book flights, hotels, and rental cars. The site provides exclusive travel deals, discounts, and tools to help you save on your next vacation. Select Capital One credit card customers can earn elevated rewards for every purchase made through the portal or redeem them for bookings. It's a great tool that lets you make all your travel reservations in one place and takes the guesswork out of redeeming miles.

However, Capital One Travel also has several downsides. You're giving up loyalty rewards with those programs by booking hotels and rental cars through Capital One. The Price Freeze function also doesn't work as promised and redeeming Capital One miles for travel bookings may not be the best way to maximize your rewards.

Overview of the Portal

The Capital One Travel Portal offers excellent value for money and flexibility, with various travel options to suit any budget. It also provides a range of rewards, discounts, and tools to help you save on your travels.

With the added convenience of booking flights, hotels, and car rentals all in one place, it is the perfect choice for anyone looking to book their next trip. While some of its features are more gimmicky than others, the fact remains that this portal provides ease and convenience for travelers who don't want to deal with multiple booking platforms and loyalty programs.

The Capital One Travel portal is a travel booking platform powered by Hopper, an app that helps travelers pick the best times to book and travel at the lowest prices. Capital One Travel offers competitive prices, exclusive discounts, and access to a wide selection of flight, hotel, and rental car options for Capital One cardholders. Customers can use the portal to earn and redeem rewards on travel bookings.

Additionally, the portal provides helpful tools such as a price calendar to find the cheapest airfares and price drop protection that will refund the fare difference if it drops post-booking. The portal also has a price freeze feature, which allows users to "freeze" a specific airfare for up to $25 or 2,500 miles.

Benefits of Booking Through the Portal

One of the key benefits of using the Capital One Travel portal is that certain types of bookings will earn you higher rewards when you pay with an eligible Capital One credit card. For example, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card earns 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars and 5 miles per dollar on flights booked through Capital One travel. And with the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card , you'll earn 5 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through the portal.

This works out well for Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card cardholders' flight bookings since Capital One lets you enter your frequent flyer number on the booking page. You'll not only earn elevated Capital One miles, but you'll also earn airline miles and elite-qualifying miles through your chosen frequent flyer program. You won't get the same benefits on hotel or rental car bookings, so that's worth weighing into your booking decision.

Above all else, the Capital One Travel portal provides convenient and easy travel booking. You can use it to compare airfare from multiple airlines at once, helping you find the best deal on your next trip. Additionally, you can use your Capital One miles to pay for travel bookings at a rate of 1 cent per mile, or get discounted rates on certain flights or hotel stays. Finally, customers have access to customer service representatives who can answer questions and assist with bookings.

How to Use Capital One Miles

The Capital One Travel portal can be a great way to earn elevated rewards and enjoy extra perks. Booking flights through this portal can make sense since you can double-dip, earning rewards with your credit card and frequent flyer miles from airlines. However, you won't earn hotel points or elite night credits on Capital One bookings, which means you'll miss out on possible elite benefits with major hotel loyalty programs. Depending on how often you travel, this could be a significant downside.

Transferring Capital One miles to one of the 18 airline or hotel partners can be a much better value proposition. If you redeem your miles for business and first-class travel, you'll usually get more than the 1 cent per mile your rewards are worth through the Capital One Travel portal. For example, a sample of fun, valuable ways to use the Capital One VentureOne welcome bonus of 20,000 miles after spending $500 on purchases within three months from account opening.

However, not all card members want to learn the ins and outs of various loyalty programs to get the most value. Some people want simplicity and the Capital One Travel portal offers just that. If you prefer convenience over value, booking with the Capital One Travel portal is a smart move. But if you're willing to put in the legwork for a high-value redemption, transferring Capital One miles to an airline or hotel program is the best option.

Using the Capital One Travel Portal is straightforward. Simply head to travel.capitalone.com and log into your account. From here, you can select between a flight, hotel, or rental car tab. Enter your destination and travel dates, then browse through the available options.

You can filter results by price, airline, hotel type, and more to find the best deal. Once you've made your selection, you can book directly with Capital One and either pay with your eligible Capital One card or use miles to pay for all or part of your trip.

Before booking anything, check out the travel offers section underneath the tabs mentioned above. Here, you'll find travel credits in select target markets. If you make a qualifying booking, you'll get a travel credit that's applicable toward future bookings.

How to Book Flights Through the Capital One Travel Portal

You can book flights with both domestic and international airlines through the Capital One travel portal. On the Capital One Travel homepage, select the "Flights" tab and enter the number of travelers, departure city, destination, and travel dates. You can book both one-way and round-trip flights.

When you select your travel dates, a color-coded calendar will show the cheapest and most expensive travel dates. This is great when your travel dates are flexible and you just want to find the lowest fare.

Choose your outbound and return dates on the calendar and select "done." Next, select the blue "search flights" button to generate your search results. On the results page, you can sort by price, departure time, arrival time, number of stops, and duration. You can also filter results by fare class, stops, airline, time, and price.

Capital One offers a price predictor tool at the top of the page, recommending whether it's a good time to book a particular price. You'll also get the option to freeze a specific price and book it later, though this feature isn't reliable in my experience. If you're not ready to book, you can select "watch this trip" to receive alerts when fares drop.

You'll also get the option to purchase cancel for any reason insurance (CFAR travel insurance) during the flight booking process. And, if Capital One Travel recommends you buy a specific flight now, it will apply free price drop protection to that flight for 10 days. If the price drops within that time period, Capital One will credit you the difference in fare, up to a maximum of $50.

How to Book Hotels Through the Capital One Travel Portal

Booking hotels through Capital One Travel is similar to booking flights. On the top of the Capital One Travel page, select the "Hotels" tab. Enter your destination, travel dates, number of travelers, and rooms, then select "Search Hotels."

Unlike the flight search tool, there is no calendar function displaying the lowest rates. However, the hotel search tool does have a city map to help you narrow down your options and find the cheapest rates. Hotel search results can also be filtered by star rating, amenities, price, and amenities. You can also sort results by price and star rating.

Once you select your room and rate, you'll be directed to the checkout page to see your total amount due in miles or cash. You can choose to pay either the cash rate or redeem miles. Note that some hotels charge additional service fees at check-in. These will be displayed on the checkout page, but you won't pay them until you get to the hotel.

How to Book Rental Cars Through the Capital One Travel Portal

To book a rental car, select the "Rental Cars" tab on the Capital One Travel portal and enter your pick-up and drop-off location, rental dates, pick-up and drop-off time, and driver age. Drivers under the age of 25 may be subject to additional fees. Click "Search Cars" to be redirected to the results page.

You can filter results by vehicle type, price per day, rental car company, cancellation policy, and other factors. As with flights and hotel bookings, Capital One displays both the total cash rate and mileage redemption rate (including taxes and fees). Once you've selected your vehicle, you'll get to a booking page displaying your total. During booking, you'll pay the rental cost minus taxes. The taxes will be collected at pick-up.

The Capital One Premier Collection is a curated list of luxury hotels and resorts worldwide that eligible cardholders can access via the Capital One Travel portal. Each property offers special benefits and includes bonus points and money-saving extras, including daily breakfast for two, experience credits, and room upgrades when available.

In addition to earning bonus points, eligible cardholders can also redeem Capital One miles toward their Premier Collection bookings. That's a huge plus, considering some of the properties in the collection are quite pricey. For example, Montage Hotels often have room rates of $1,000 per night or higher. Being able to redeem miles for these stays is a great way to save on upscale hotel bookings.

Capital One Premier Collection Hotels

Some Premier Collection hotels are operated by major hotel chains, while others are independent. Regardless of the hotel's affiliation, booking through the Premier Collection can help you secure added benefits typically reserved for elite members or those willing to pay extra for them.

There are currently seven major hotel chains represented in the collection. They include upscale brands like 1 Hotels, Design Hotels, Leading Hotels of the World, Montage, Preferred Hotels & Resorts, Small Luxury Hotels of the World, and Viceroy Hotels.

Some of these names may be more familiar than others. They include high-end hotels like the Montage Laguna Beach, Viceroy Los Cabos, Hotel Cafe Royal London, and the Wittmore in Barcelona.

Who Can Book the Capital One Premier Collection?

The only Capital One credit cards that have access to the Premier Collection are the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and Capital One Venture X Business Card† . Both of these are premium cards with high annual fees; for example, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card costs $395 per year ( rates and fees ) but comes with an annual $300 travel credit you can apply toward Premier Collection bookings. In addition to all the hotel-specific benefits, cardholders who book a Premier Collection stay will earn 10 miles per dollar spent — the highest travel booking payout of any transferable points card.

The Capital One Venture X Business Card was previously known as the Capital One Spark Travel Elite, and it's very similar to the Venture X. It has the same $395 annual fee, $300 travel credit, and 10,000 annual bonus miles.

Both cards are great for travel enthusiasts and those looking to earn generous rewards on their daily spending. While the Premier Collection access is not enough reason to get a Venture X card (the list of participating hotels is limited), it is an excellent addition to the various other benefits these cards offer.

Capital One Premier Collection Benefits

Booking through Premier Collection provides travelers with various perks, including special amenities and bonus miles. The following benefits are available at Premier Collection properties worldwide:

  • 10 miles per dollar on hotel bookings
  • $100 experience credit per stay
  • Daily breakfast for two
  • Space-available room upgrade
  • Early check-in and late check-out
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi

The experience credit will vary by property, but you'll need to charge the qualifying expense to your room to receive it. The hotel will then apply the credit to your folio upon checkout.

The daily breakfast can be especially valuable in high-priced destinations like the Maldives, where the remote setting often translates to breakfast charges of $50 or more per person. Having breakfast included in the cost of your stay, along with $100 toward some of the most expensive spa treatments in the world, is an excellent value in exchange for booking a stay through Capital One's Premier Collection.

Capital One Credit Cards That Are Eligible for the Travel Portal

You don't necessarily need a high-priced travel credit card to use the Capital One Travel portal. The platform is open to many Capital One cardholders, including those who carry a student credit card or small-business credit card issued by Capital One.

Over a dozen options are available, ranging from no-annual-fee credit cards like the Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card to the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, a premium credit card :

At 10 miles per dollar spent on hotels and rental cars and 5x on flights booked through the portal, Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card cardholders will earn the most rewards on Capital One Travel bookings. The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card includes $300 per year in credits toward Capital One Travel bookings, which helps offset much of the card's $395 annual fee.

Capital One miles are worth 1 cent each in the Capital One Travel Portal. This is pretty generous, considering miles are earned at a rate of 2 to 5 per dollar spent with the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and 2 to 10 miles per dollar on the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

However, it's possible to get more value from your miles by skipping the portal and instead transferring rewards to Capital One's transfer partners . You can transfer miles to 18 airline and hotel loyalty programs to book award travel.

Business Insider's points and miles valuations peg the value of Capital One miles at 1.7 cents each, because it's possible to get outsized value from transferring miles to partners and booking award flights or stays. Be sure to read Insider's guide on how to earn and redeem Capital One miles to find out more about maximizing your rewards.

Key takeaways

  • Capital One’s travel portal offers a convenient way to book flights, hotels and cars with your card and/or Capital One miles.
  • The portal features price prediction technology, price alerts and a best price match guarantee to help users save money on their bookings.
  • While easy to use, cardholders likely get more value from their Capital One miles by transferring them to travel loyalty program partners.

Since launching in fall 2021, Capital One’s travel portal, aptly named Capital One Travel, has continued to innovate in building tools to help book and plan your next trip. The portal provides a seamless way to book trips, hotels and cars with your card and/or your Capital One miles. With access to exclusive hotel programs alongside trip pricing tools powered by Hopper, a well-known travel technology company, the portal can be a great asset when researching and booking your travel needs.

This guide will explain more about the portal, including how to use all the bells and whistles it offers, such as price prediction, price watch, price drop protections and the ability to cancel bookings for any reason. This guide will also help you make the most of your hard-earned rewards and cardholder benefits.

What is Capital One Travel?

Capital One Travel is the travel rewards portal that allows Capital One cardholders to book travel accommodations with their credit card rewards (and cash if needed). The portal is similar to offerings provided by American Express and Chase, among other issuers, to help cardholders more easily book their next trip and redeem their rewards. These branded travel portals act as a travel search engine to help cardholders redeem travel rewards and find better deals in the process.

Access the full slate of benefits at Capital One Travel by signing into your Capital One account. Once you decide on the travel to book, you can choose to pay for it using an eligible credit card or, if you have a bank of Capital One miles, you can redeem them directly for your booking.

Who can use the Capital One Travel Portal?

Any Capital One rewards cardholder is eligible to use the travel portal for their needs, even if your card earns cash back instead of Capital One miles . Many other issuers reserve their travel portals solely for cardholders with a premium travel card .

If you have one or more of the following Capital One credit cards , you’re eligible to use the travel portal and earn elevated rewards on certain travel booked through it:

Additional Capital One cards, such as the Capital One Quicksilver Student Rewards Credit Card , give cardholders access to the portal, but don’t offer elevated rewards on bookings.

Benefits of using Capital One Travel

Capital One has partnered with travel technology company Hopper to power the portal. Together, they have added features to help you book your trip with confidence and provide additional context to your searches. Here are some of the key benefits and offerings including within the travel portal:

Price prediction technology

When searching for flights in Capital One Travel, the tool will help you pay the best possible price by alerting you if the price available is likely to drop or increase. If they do not recommend purchasing at that moment, they offer an easy way to be alerted when the price does drop. With billions of flight price data points captured every day, the issuer claims that this technology can predict flight prices with 95 percent accuracy.

You can use the travel portal’s booking feature to place a reservation for a flight right away or wait for a better price. The price prediction tool will recommend the best time to book your flight, which could help you save up to 15 percent on your flight.

This feature will appear as a helpful information box when available for a given flight search. In the example below, when looking for a flight between New York and London in April 2024, it recommends waiting till closer to the travel date to book that ticket.

Screenshot provided by Will Esslifie

Price alerts on flights

Maybe you aren’t quite ready to book yet, but want to start gathering info. Capital One allows you to monitor flights and can notify you via email when there is a price change. These alerts can help you decide when to book your ticket.

For a search for a December trip to Cape Town, South Africa the portal shared that you could save $187 per ticket by waiting and watching this trip for a price alert update.

Screenshot provided by Will Esslifie

Price drop prediction

Once you buy a ticket via the portal after using the price prediction tool, Capital One will continue to monitor ticket prices for the next 10 days. If the ticket price drops below what you paid in that time span, Capital One will provide you with up to $50 in travel credit to cover the difference.

Best price match guarantee

Capital One will refund the difference for the price of a flight, hotel or rental car as travel credit if you find a better price on another site within 24 hours of booking with Capital One Travel. Submit a price match claim by contacting Capital One Travel via the help center or by calling them at 844-422-6922. Remember, the refund will come in the form of travel credits to use for future Capital One Travel bookings.

Price freeze

If you aren’t quite ready to book your flight, you can pay a small fee to “freeze” the flight price until you are ready to confirm the booking. Capital One will hold that price for you until the expiration date of your frozen price. Look for the expiration date before you complete your purchase.

For example, you could freeze the price on a ticket from Miami, Florida to Lima, Peru for $9 or 900 miles per person. Be sure to review the terms and timeline for your price freeze on the portal before freezing a price.

Screenshot provided by Will Esslifie

Cancel for any reason coverage

This feature can provide some flexibility to your travel bookings as needed. For a fee, this option allows you to cancel your flight — with no penalties — up to a set time within 24 hours prior to your scheduled departure. Depending on the terms of your booking, you will have the option to receive a refund ranging from 70 percent to 100 percent of your flight’s costs.

How to book with Capital One Travel

Here’s how to book flights, hotels and car rentals through the travel portal:

Book flights in the Capital One travel portal

To book a flight from the portal, select the Flights option from the portal homepage. From there, you can enter the cities you wish to travel between and fill out all the necessary information.

Screenshot provided by Will Esslifie

As you go to select your travel date(s), the portal will provide a helpful color-coded guide alerting you of the price variances by day. If you’ve got some flexibility, you can choose from different pricing categories to get lower fares:

Screenshot provided by Will Esslifie

You can also filter your results by airline, price, number of stops, time, flight number and other preferences.

Once you arrive at a ticket you’d like to book, you can follow the prompts to choose the fare options you want. Right before checking out, you’ll see the option to freeze your fare until you are ready to book, which you can pay for in miles or cash. If you don’t want to freeze your fare, you can continue to the checkout where you’ll choose your seat and how you want to pay.

Book hotels in the Capital One Travel portal

The process of booking hotel accommodations is similar to booking airfare; simply search for hotels by location and date. From there, you can filter properties for specific amenities, such as parking or breakfast. The search results page will show you a map with hotel locations, price per night and the total price. The portal also provides the TripAdvisor rating of that particular property as well.

Book car rentals in the Capital One Travel portal

You can also book a rental car through the Capital One portal. Once you’ve entered your desired pickup and dropoff locations, you can go through the options to narrow them down based on the rental company, cost or your specific needs.

Should you book travel through Capital One Travel?

Whether you should book travel via the Capital One Travel portal depends on your goals and needs, but there are some common pros and cons.

Pros of booking with Capital One Travel

  • Price freeze . The price freeze feature is an affordable way to hold on to a potential booking while considering your options. This can be a great way to save time and money when planning your next trip.
  • Additional bonus points . Booking through the Capital One travel portal with an eligible card can provide additional bonus Capital One miles, helping you accrue more points to redeem towards future travel.
  • Price match guarantee . With the price match guarantee, you can feel confident knowing that if the price drops, you can receive credits to cover the price difference.

Cons of booking with Capital One Travel

  • Not all flights featured . Capital One Travel may not have access to all possible flights. For example, Southwest flights will not be viewable in the portal, so you may need to review other sites in addition to the portal to find the best flight for your needs.
  • Limited benefits with loyalty programs . Hotels usually require you to book directly with them to enjoy elite perks. As a result, booking through the portal may make you ineligible for certain perks if you are a member of a hotel or rental car loyalty program. Be sure to check their rules before completing your booking.
  • May not earn loyalty rewards. Usually hotels, and sometimes airlines, won’t award loyalty points for bookings made through third-party travel portals.
  • Lack of travel packages . The travel portal currently does not allow cardholders to book travel packages, though you can group different types of travel accommodations in one itinerary and pay for them at the same time.

The portal can be a helpful component of your travel booking process. But even if Capital One Travel becomes your go-to for booking travel, don’t forget to check other booking options to make sure you’re getting the best deal.

Other options for redeeming your Capital One miles

In addition to the travel portal, Capital One offers cardholders additional ways to redeem their miles. Additional options include:

Transfer miles to travel partners

It can be advantageous to transfer your miles to one of Capital One’s transfer partners . This option may save money if your miles pick up more value upon transfer. In fact, Capital One miles are worth just 1 cent each when redeemed through the portal or for statement credit to cover a travel purchase; however, they’re worth an average of 1.7 each when transferred to a high-value travel partner, according to Bankrate’s latest valuations.

Most partners allow transfers at a 1:1 ratio, but Capital One sometimes runs promotions in which you can transfer miles and receive a bonus with the transfer partner. For instance, at the time of publishing, cardholders could receive 1,300 Virgin Points for every 1,000 Capital One miles transferred.

Screenshot provided by Will Esslifie

To complete a transfer, you will need to link your loyalty program account to your Capital One account. Once you have your member number, you can plug it into the miles transfer screen, and Capital One will move your miles to the loyalty program of your choice. The transfer process may be immediate or could take a few hours. When the miles appear in your loyalty membership account, you can then book your travel directly through the travel brand where you transferred your points.

Cover past travel purchases

You can use your Capital One miles to cover travel purchases up to 90 days old. Although there’s no guarantee exactly how your travel purchases will be coded, generally, Capital One miles will cover travel-related expenses such as airfare, hotel stays, train tickets, car rentals, limousine services, bus tickets, cruises, taxis, travel agents and timeshares.

The bottom line

The Capital One Travel portal can be a great way to book your next trip. With its price prediction technology, price freezes and other tools designed to make trip planning a breeze, it’s a useful benefit accessible to Capital One rewards cardholders.

Keep in mind that the most lucrative travel rewards strategies, however, usually involve more than one travel rewards currency, so check out other travel rewards cards if you’re on a journey to maximize your credit card rewards.

You may know Capital One as a company that offers credit cards, car loans and bank accounts, but they also have a travel portal that allows you to book flights, hotels, rental cars and luxury vacations. For eligible Capital One cardholders, booking through the Capital One travel portal can be an excellent way to earn and redeem Capital One miles. Let’s take a look at the Capital One travel portal, how it works and who has access to its perks.

  • The Capital One travel portal is accessible to cardholders of more than 15 different Capital One cards.
  • Eligible cards will earn extra rewards on their Capital One travel bookings.
  • Features of the Capital One travel portal include price drop protection and price matching.
  • Capital One miles can be earned and redeemed through the Capital One travel portal.

How to book travel through the Capital One travel portal

Booking travel through the Capital One travel portal is simple. To do so, simply navigate to the Capital One travel portal website . Then log in to your Capital One account.

Once logged in, you’ll be directed to the site’s home page.

capital one travel portal flights

From there, you can search for flights, hotels and rental cars for any travel you have planned. Just enter your search parameters, such as travel dates and destination, to get a list of booking options.

Your search results will vary depending on what type of travel you want to book. For example, if you’re searching for a hotel, Capital One will bring up a dynamic map and a list of properties that match your filters.

Once you’ve perused available options, you can make a selection that suits your needs. You’ll then go through the checkout process, which includes filling in your personal details and payment information. Note that you’ll need to use your eligible Capital One card to pay.

Who can use the portal?

The Capital One travel portal is accessible to those with an eligible Capital One credit card. These include:

  • Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card * The information for the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

You’ll want to be aware that not all Capital One cards provide access to the travel portal. For example, the Capital One Platinum Credit Card * The information for the Capital One Platinum Credit Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. , which is designed to help build credit, does not offer this feature.

Is the portal worth using?

There are a few factors to consider when deciding whether or not to use the Capital One travel portal for a booking.

First, depending on which Capital One card you hold, you may be able to earn big rewards by booking your travel through the portal. For example, the Capital One Venture X earns 2 miles per $1 on purchases, 5 miles per $1 on flights booked through Capital One Travel and on purchases through Capital One Entertainment and 10 miles per $1 on hotels and rental cars booked via Capital One Travel.

Capital One miles can be redeemed in a variety of ways, but are worth one cent each toward travel, which means you’re effectively getting 10% back on eligible bookings.

capital one travel portal flights

That being said, many hotel and rental car companies limit the benefits you’ll receive if you choose to book through a third party (such as the travel portal). This can mean you lose out on perks such as bonus points and the benefits of any elite status that you’ve earned. However, this varies by hotel, so you might want to check before you book.

How to maximize your Capital One travel benefits through the portal

Capital One has built a robust portal that provides value to its customers. This is especially true when it comes to booking flights. The flight search function includes a handy calendar of prices to show you at a glance when fares are high.

capital one travel portal flights

Capital One has also partnered with the travel app Hopper to give customers free price prediction tools. When searching, the portal will let you know whether you should book or wait for a better price.

capital one travel portal flights

Even better, if you book a flight when recommended by Capital One, you’re automatically enrolled in price drop protection for 10 days. If the price goes down during that time frame, you’ll get a refund of up to $50.

You can also choose to set an alert for your flight, which will notify you when the price changes. Finally, if you’re not ready to book but are worried that the price will increase, you can pay a small fee to freeze the cost of your fare so you can return later to book.

Other benefits associated with the Capital One travel portal include access to the Lifestyle Collection and the Premier Collection. If you have an eligible Capital One card, you’ll be able to book specialty hotels with exclusive benefits such as room upgrades, late checkout and experience credits.

Quick guide to Capital One rewards

Different Capital One cards earn different types of rewards. Some cards earn cash back while others earn miles.

Capital One miles can be redeemed in a variety of ways, including transfers to Capital One hotel and airline partners. This is generally the most valuable method of redeeming miles, but you can also redeem them for statement credits against travel purchases that you’ve made. While this isn’t typically the best way to redeem Capital One rewards, it can be useful if there are no reward options available for the dates you want to travel.

Finally, Capital One miles can also be used for bookings within the Capital One travel portal. You’ll be able to redeem them at a rate of one cent each — but you’d be better off using your card to pay, then redeeming miles against your purchase. This allows you to earn rewards on your booking before wiping away the charges.

Other ways to redeem miles include gift cards, entertainment and cash, but you’ll want to be wary of doing so as you won’t get as much value from your rewards this way as you would with travel redemptions.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

The Capital One travel portal works with many different airlines, including Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Spirit Airlines and JetBlue.

However, you won’t see flights from Southwest Airlines on the Capital One travel portal. Instead, you’ll want to search directly with the airline to find these tickets.

Capital One miles don’t expire as long as you have an eligible Capital One credit card open. If you plan to close a Capital One credit card account, make sure to use or transfer any accumulated miles first.

Unlike hotels and rental cars, airlines generally don’t penalize those who book through a third party. This means you’ll be able to enter your loyalty program number and earn rewards on flights booked through the Capital One travel portal.

Many of the best credit cards on the market offer a statement credit (up to $100) that will reimburse you for the cost of TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, two popular trusted traveler programs that can help you speed through the airport. This includes Capital One cards such as the Capital One Venture X rewards credit card and the Capital One Venture Rewards credit card.

Making a booking through the Capital One travel portal doesn’t automatically entitle you to entry into airport lounges. However, certain Capital One credit cards offer this as a benefit. For example, those who have the Capital One Venture X rewards credit card or the Capital One Venture X Rewards Business card receive a complimentary Priority Pass Select membership (enrollment required) and unlimited access to Capital One lounges for themselves and two guests.

The offers below may no longer be available.

Capital One unveiled the details of their brand new travel booking portal — Capital One Travel. It's a unique platform to book travel using your Capital One credit card , whether you are booking with miles or cash.

This news comes as the bank recently announced upgraded travel benefits, including new transfer partners for Capital One miles and opening three Capital One airport lounges.

Now, Capital One is delivering an all-in-one travel portal where consumers can book flights, hotels and car rentals — and also access several exciting features to save money on travel and make booking a hassle-free experience.

Capital One Travel's new features

American Express and Chase are famous for their travel rewards credit cards , along with their travel portals where you can use their respective points. Now, Capital One has built its own proprietary portal with a slew of unique features.

However, this portal is still in 'beta' and is not yet accessible to Capital One cardholders. The live version will be rolling out to Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card, Capital One Spark Miles for Business, Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business and Capital One Walmart Rewards® Mastercard® cardholders in the coming weeks.

The portal will include these features when it first launches:

  • Price prediction technology: Earlier this year, Capital One announced a partnership with Hopper, a tech company with airfare price prediction technology. Using historical data, this tool will predict when flights are at their highest or lowest price. This can help inform the timing of when you should purchase a flight if you want to get it for the best price.
  • Price drop protection: If a flight price is found lower than the one you paid, Capital One will offer a refund for the difference. This can be a huge money saver for consumers who regularly travel, and the best part is that it's automatically refunded.
  • Price match guarantee: If you find a better price for a flight, hotel or rental car on another site within 24 hours of booking, Capital One Travel will refund the difference.

Later this year Capital One will add these benefits to its travel portal:

  • Integrated travel insurance to 'cancel for any reason' : For a small fee, consumers can book their travel with a 'cancel for any reason' clause. This is typically a premium if you are to purchase a traditional travel insurance policy . You can cancel a flight for any reason 24 hours before departure and get 80% of your ticket cost back.
  • Freeze your price: If you find a price you like, but aren't fully ready to book, you have the option to freeze the price and complete the purchase at a later time. Capital One will cover the difference if the flight price is higher than when you instituted the freeze; if the price has dropped, you will be able to purchase it at the lower price. There will be a small fee for this feature.

Lastly, sustainable travel has become a priority for many who are hitting the road. Booking.com's 2021 Sustainable Travel Report revealed that 61% of travelers stated the pandemic has influenced them to want to travel more sustainably. In response, Capital One is launching a partnership with Eden Reforestation to plant four trees for every flight, hotel, or rental car booking in order to help with forest restoration.

Compared to other bank's travel portals, Capital One Travel will provide a very unique and potentially valuable tool. The other travel booking platforms do not include nearly any of the same purchase protections or travel insurance policies.

And with transfer bonuses becoming more lucrative for consumers who earn transferable points, there is often less incentive to use a bank's travel portal. But with Capital One's new product, travelers have more tools to try and get the best price for their upcoming adventure.

Best Capital One credit cards

If the new Capital One Travel portal is intriguing, consider applying for one of the many Capital One credit cards.

Here are their current cards and their welcome offers:

  • Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card: 75,000 bonus miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening
  • Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card: 20,000 bonus miles once you spend $500 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening
  • Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card: A one-time $200 cash bonus after you spend $500 on purchases within 3 months from account opening
  • Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card: A one-time $300 cash bonus once you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening
  • Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card: A one-time $200 cash bonus after you spend $500 on purchases within 3 months from account opening
  • Capital One Spark Miles for Business: 50,000 miles bonus once you spend $4,500 in the first 3 months from account opening.

Bottom line

Booking through a credit card's travel portal has several upsides, mainly the ability to earn and burn your miles all in one place. But the new benefits of the Capital One Travel portal make the card issuer stand out from other bank's booking platforms.

How to change your flight, travel plans change–capital one travel is here to help. find out how to make adjustments to your itinerary..

To request a change to your flight reservation, sign in to Capital One Travel and visit the My Trips page.

1. To find the My Trips page, click the menu button in the top right-hand corner.

2. select my trips., 3. click on your upcoming trip to view more details., 4. select change flight to manage your trip..

Placeholder

5. If available, you might be able to change your flight through Capital One Travel.

However, some flights may need to be changed directly through the airline.

Keep in mind that many airlines charge to change flights. Fees might include things like the airline’s change penalty and any difference between the price of the original flight and the new flight.

Since the cost of flights is variable, the difference in fare can be calculated only at the time of the change. You can review any fees associated with your change before you confirm your updated flight information.

Here are some tips to help you change your travel plans as seamlessly as possible:

If you need to make a change to your itinerary within 24 hours of the scheduled departure time, contact the airline directly.

If you made your booking within the past 24 hours, you may still be eligible to cancel your booking without a penalty. Then, you can rebook your preferred itinerary without having to pay the airline’s change fees.

If you booked a basic economy ticket, airlines typically don’t allow changes after 24 hours.

If you booked with a low-cost carrier—like Spirit Airlines or Ryanair—you have to contact the airline directly to request any changes (cancellations, refunds, exchanges).

Keep in mind that if you request a flight change from Capital One Travel and then request the same change directly from the airline within 24 hours, the airline may charge you additional change fees. Capital One Travel is not responsible for any additional fees paid to the airline.

Where to find confirmation numbers

You will likely need the airline confirmation number when contacting the airline to make changes to your booking.

Your airline confirmation code is separate from your Capital One Travel confirmation code, which will usually begin with an “H-”—for example, H-X7UTSF.

Both the airline confirmation code and Capital One Travel confirmation code can be found in the confirmation email from Capital One Travel or by signing in to Capital One Travel and going to My Trips.

Example of an email from Capital One Travel with confirmation codes for an upcoming flight.

How to manage your booking on the airline’s website

You can often manage many aspects of your flight booking directly on the airline’s website. For example, you can typically do things like:

View your full itinerary.

Select your seats.

Purchase add-ons like upgraded seats, meals and more.

Add baggage.

Add a frequent flyer number.

Add assistance needs, like a wheelchair.

Check in.

Print your boarding pass.

To manage your booking on the airline’s website, you likely need to have your airline confirmation code on hand. The airline confirmation code can be found in the confirmation email from Capital One Travel, or by following the instructions above to sign in to Capital One Travel and navigate to the My Trips page. Once there, here’s what you need to do:

1. Select your upcoming trip to view more details.

2. scroll to the confirmation section and select view all., 3. select copy & go to copy the airline confirmation code., 4. go to the airline’s website. , 5. paste the copied confirmation code in the required field to access your booking. .

Some airlines don’t let you manage bookings online that weren’t made directly through them. If that’s the case for your flight, don’t worry. Your booking is still confirmed. Check in like you normally would at the airport, regardless of whether you booked directly through the airline or through Capital One Travel. (Helpful tip: Have several last names? Find your flight by entering your names without any spaces between them.)

For an upcoming trip to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, I had been chasing non-existent airline award availability for weeks and was watching cash prices for airfare increase daily. I bit the bullet and determined that I would need to purchase a ticket with cash … and quickly before fares rose any higher.

I wanted to explore all of my options to get the best overall deal — I wasn’t just looking for the cheapest flight, but also wanted to use the best credit card that delivered high rewards and good travel insurance coverage. This search led me to Capital One Travel, where I was able to score the best available fare via a price match and maximize my earnings with my Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

Let’s dive into why pricing out your flight on Capital One Travel might be worth your time, even if you find a cheaper fare elsewhere.

Capital One Travel is an online travel portal open to Capital One cardholders that allows you to book flights, hotels, and car rentals. You can redeem Capital One miles to cover the cost of your booking at a rate of 1 cent per mile or use any credit card (even non-Capital One cards) to pay.

When paying with select Capital One cards , you’ll also earn up to 10x miles for your Capital One Travel purchase. Here are some of our favorite Capital One cards:

While hotels booked through Capital One Travel are not eligible to earn loyalty points, you are able to earn frequent flyer miles for flights booked through the portal.

A downside to booking flights through Capital One Travel is that should your flight get changed or canceled, you will most likely have to manage changes to your reservation through Capital One Travel, not directly with the airline. This could add an extra layer of frustration when trying to make new travel plans, as it’s often easier to deal directly with the airline vs. a third-party service.

I use 2 main credit cards for travel purchases, and I always review our detailed comparison of the Capital One Venture X card vs. the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card before making a big purchase. In this case, I double-checked the earning rates and travel insurance benefits .

While both cards earn 5x miles/points on flights through their respective travel portals, the Chase Sapphire Preferred card has slightly stronger trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage with $10,000 per person/$20,000 per trip, while the Capital One Venture X card offers $2,000 per trip. However, the Capital One Venture X card has better trip delay coverage with 6-hour delay coverage vs. 12-hour delay coverage on the Chase Sapphire Preferred card.

All things fairly equal, I checked my flight options on Capital One Travel and the Chase Travel portal , and Capital One Travel won me over with cheaper flights for the schedule I was after. I booked 5 round-trip flights from Johannesburg (JNB) to Victoria Falls (VFA) on South African Airways for $1,428.50 and paid with my Capital One Venture X card; this transaction would earn over 7,100 Capital One miles since the card earns 5x miles on flights purchased through Capital One Travel.

If I had booked the flight directly with the airline, I would have paid $1,316.75  and earned 2,633 miles at the 2x miles rate. We value Capital One miles at 1.8 cents per mile, meaning I would earn $129 worth of miles with my Capital One Travel purchase vs. $47 worth of miles if I had purchased directly — a 174% increase in value .

Hot Tip: The Capital One Venture X card comes with an annual $300 travel credit valid for purchases at Capital One Travel. While I had already used my credit for the year, this would have easily swayed me to use Capital One Travel for my purchase.

Capital One Travel offers a price match guarantee within 24 hours of your purchase if you find a better price for your flight, hotel, or rental car on another website. This is a great way to match to the pricing from some of those unknown OTAs that might show on a Google Flights or Kayak search.

Start the process by calling Capital One Travel at 844-422-6922 to begin your claim. The agent will attempt to verify the lower price while on the phone with you, and if they’re successful you’ll receive a 100% refund for the difference. If for some reason your claim can’t be verified during the call, the agent will start an offline review and follow up with you.

The itinerary on the site you’re attempting to match to must be an exact match to your Capital One Travel booking, should be priced in U.S. dollars, and should be available to the general public without any coupons, promotions, or member discounts.

Review Capital One Travel’s price match guarantee terms and conditions  to learn more.

Hot Tip: At the time of my price match, Capital One was refunding the difference to the original method of payment. However, in May 2023 the policy was changed so that all refunds are now processed as Capital One Travel Credit.

I researched prices for my desired flights on Google Flights before purchasing and was able to see that South African Airways offered the same flight on its website for $1,393.06 . This was just $35.44 cheaper than Capital One Travel’s price of $1,428.50 , but in the interest of earning more miles, I decided to purchase the tickets through Capital One Travel and attempt a price match.

Capital One Travel flight confirmation

My call to Capital One Travel to initiate the price match lasted just under 20 minutes . The representative was able to see my current reservation at $1,428.50 and was able to pull up the cheaper option of $1,393.06 on flysaa.com to implement the price match.

She processed the refund of $35.44 ($7.09 per ticket), but when she placed me on hold, I happened to refresh the flysaa.com page. To my surprise, the tickets were now even cheaper by another $76.30! Since the rep had not completed the call with me, I asked if she was able to see the reduced fare of $1,316.75 and match it further. She confirmed that she was able to see the new fare and happily processed a further refund of $76.30 ($15.26 per ticket). Overall, I received a total refund of $111.75.  While this was refunded back to my Capital One Venture X card in January 2023 according to the policy at the time, the terms and conditions changed in May 2023 and refunds are now refunded as Capital One Travel Credits.

Capital One Travel charges refunds

I earned 7,143 Capital One miles for my initial purchase, though 555 miles were subsequently deducted for the refund.

Capital One miles earned

After the price match, my final cost was $1,316.75 with 6,588 miles earned (worth about $119).

Hot Tip: Make sure to document the date and time of your price match guarantee call, who you spoke with, what the expected refund should be, and when you should receive the refund by. It is also helpful for your records to also have a screenshot of the site and fare you are trying to match to.

Was 20 minutes of my time worth saving $111.75? You bet. I had a great experience with the Capital One Travel representative that assisted me, and I appreciated that at the end of the day, I received the match I was after and even a bonus match that increased my overall savings. I was able to successfully get the best available price for my flights while earning the highest rewards rate possible on my available credit cards — an overall win-win.

What is Capital One price drop protection?

How do you claim a capital one price drop protection refund, limitations of capital one price drop protection, which cards are eligible for capital one travel price drop protection, how i've (already) saved via capital one travel price drop, if you like the sound of automatic flight refunds.

Capital One has made a big push into the travel scene recently. It introduced the impressive new Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , vastly improved its airline and hotel transfer partners and introduced a new Capital One Travel portal . And although it seems like every bank has a travel portal these days, this one offers features not found elsewhere.

Some of these unique features include price watch and prediction tools, an airfare price freeze feature and the ability to cancel a flight for any reason for a refund of 70-90% of the ticket price. This article will focus on one of the portal’s biggest benefits: price drop protection.

Here's what you need to know about using Capital One Travel price drop protection to save money on flights.

Capital One price drop protection is a free service that refunds you the price difference if the cost of a flight drops after you book it through Capital One Travel. The protection is automatically applied when Capital One's price prediction tool recommends that you buy a given flight because its price is likely to increase.

To get this free price protection, just look for the phrase "you should book now" at the top of your Capital One Travel search results. If you follow this advice and book your flight through the portal, you'll automatically receive price drop protection — subject to limitations covered below.

capital one travel portal flights

Besides being free, the best part of Capital One price drop protection is how easy it is to get automatic refunds when the price of your flight drops. Once the protection is applied to eligible bookings, Capital One automatically tracks prices on the flight you booked. Then, if it finds a cheaper price, you’ll receive a refund without needing to prompt the system.

There is no way to manually request a refund if you find a lower price elsewhere. However, you can use the Capital One Travel Price Match Guarantee to submit a claim if you find the same flight, hotel or rental car available at a lower price through another booking platform within 24 hours of booking through Capital One's portal.

After 24 hours, you don't have any incentive to manually check for lower prices. If you don't get a refund, you can feel confident that you got a good price on your flight.

Capital One price drop protection is great for automatically monitoring and refunding the price of a flight; however, there are limitations to this service.

Specificity. Capital One will monitor the price of the particular itinerary you booked only — which it specifies is the same flight, fare class and seat type. Unfortunately, this means that you won't get a refund if the price drops on another similar flight or on another airline.

Time limits. Capital One will monitor for price drops for a set amount of time only. Again, this isn't a limitation that's stated in the terms and conditions, so it may vary. However, in each of five recent eligible Capital One Travel bookings and searches, Capital One offered complimentary price drop protection for 10 days.

Refund allowance caps. Capital One limits how much you can get back through price drop protection. This isn't a limit that's stated in the terms and conditions and may be based on the particular flight results. However, it appears that the price drop protection cap is generally $50 per passenger.

For example, when searching for a flight from Atlanta to New York City in a few weeks, Capital One Travel recommended that I book now and offered free price drop protection of up to $50.

capital one travel portal flights

When it was first introduced, Capital One limited access to its travel portal to cardholders of the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card . However, in May 2022, access was expanded to all Capital One rewards cards.

That means holders of the following cards now have access to Capital One Travel:

Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card .

Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card .

Capital One Spark Cash for Business .

Capital One Spark Miles for Business .

I recently got a chance to see how price drop protection works in practice. In April and May 2022, my wife and I visited India. As local airline websites wouldn't accept our international credit cards, we needed to book through a travel portal — giving us a perfect reason to try booking through Capital One Travel.

In total, we booked three intra-India flights through Capital One Travel. In each case, it was recommended that we book the flight, meaning we received complimentary price drop protection on all three flights. And booking through the portal paid off. The price ended up dropping on two of the three flights, netting us refunds of $25.81 and $12.92.

capital one travel portal flights

While a refund of $38.73 may not sound like a lot, these flights didn't cost very much. Plus, this is $38.73 more than we would have gotten if we had booked through another travel portal or website.

After this positive experience, I'm certainly more likely to book flights through Capital One Travel — even after I've used the $300 annual travel credit on my Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card .

Capital One Travel is making a compelling case for being the go-to place for booking flights. In addition to price watch and price freeze tools, the portal’s price prediction feature helps you figure out when it's the best time to book a flight. If you follow the recommendation to book your flight when prices are low, you may be able to get automatic refunds through Capital One price drop protection.

Plus, Capital One rewards cardholders earn bonus miles or cash back for booking through Capital One Travel. Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card holders get 10x miles on hotels and rental cars and 5x miles on flights booked through the portal. Meanwhile, Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and other rewards cardholders get 5x miles or 5% cash back on rental cars and hotel bookings.

Battle of the credit card travel portals: Which is the best for booking flights?

Stella Shon

American Express, Capital One, Chase and Citi are four of the major players in the travel credit card space . As such, these issuers offer their own travel portals, where users can earn and redeem their points and miles for flights, hotels, car rentals and more.

These issuers also incentivize their cardholders to use the bank's own portal, done by offering bonus points on bookings.

For instance, with the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , you'll earn 10 miles per dollar on hotel and car rentals and 5 miles per dollar on flights — but only when booked through the Capital One Travel portal. Purchases made outside the portal earn 2 miles per dollar.

Likewise, with the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card , you'll earn 5 points per dollar on all travel booked through the Ultimate Rewards portal. Otherwise, you earn 2 points per dollar on those travel purchases.

Given the lucrative earning potential that booking through these portals presents, it begs the question: Is it worth your time to use them rather than booking directly?

In this guide, we put these four travel portals to the test when booking flights. We compared price, ease of use, redemption value and other metrics.

Methodology

For this analysis, we limited our research to flights and didn't include hotels, rental cars or other travel. That's because we generally recommend that you avoid booking hotels through a third party since you likely won't receive elite-status benefits (if you have any) or earn elite-qualifying stay credits.

If you're not concerned with earning hotel elite status or are booking an independent hotel, then booking your stay through a travel portal could be advantageous for you.

It's also worth noting that you can get elite-like perks at hotels, even without elite status, by booking with these programs: Amex's Fine Hotels + Resorts , Amex's The Hotel Collection , Capital One's Premier Collection , Capital One's Lifestyle Collection , Chase's Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection , Citi's Hotel Collection and Citi's Luxury Hotel Collection.

With flights, you may be able to "double-dip" your earnings: You can usually earn bonus points on bookings through your card issuer's portal and earn airline and elite-qualifying miles just as you would by booking directly through the airline. That said, here are the features we examined in each portal:

  • Results: Do you get comprehensive results when searching through the portal?
  • Price: How do the prices compare to booking directly with an airline versus through a portal?
  • Ease of use: Is navigating the portal easy for a user? What unique features or benefits do users get from using this portal?
  • Redemption value: Is it worth redeeming your points and miles for travel through a portal?

With these four factors in mind, here's how the individual issuers' travel portals stack up.

American Express Travel portal

capital one travel portal flights

Any American Express card that earns Membership Rewards points grants access to the Amex Travel portal . Depending on your specific card, you may earn bonus points for booking through the portal.

The Platinum Card® from American Express , for instance, earns 5 points per dollar on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel (on up to $500,000 of these purchases annually, then 1 point per dollar) and 5 points per dollar on prepaid hotel bookings made through Amex Travel. The American Express® Gold Card , meanwhile, earns 3 points per dollar on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel.

You can search for flights, hotels, flight and hotel packages, rental cars and cruises on the Amex portal.

Capital One travel portal

capital one travel portal flights

The Capital One travel portal offers a fresh interface powered by the travel tech app Hopper and is accessible with most credit cards earning Capital One miles or cash back.

Bonus earnings are available, depending on which card you have. Using the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card to book flights in the portal provides 5 miles per dollar; flights booked elsewhere earn 2 miles per dollar.

Currently, you can only book flights, hotels and rental cars through the portal. The portal also houses the Premier Collection for luxury hotels. However, this is only accessible if you have the Venture X or its counterpart, the Capital One Venture X Business .

Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal

capital one travel portal flights

Chase's Ultimate Rewards travel portal was powered by Expedia for many years, but the issuer migrated to cxLoyalty in 2021 .

You can access the portal with your Ultimate Rewards-earning credit card , including popular options like the Chase Sapphire Reserve , the Chase Sapphire Preferred or the Chase Freedom Unlimited . Cardholders can book flights, hotels, cars, activities and cruises on the Chase travel portal.

Citi travel portal

capital one travel portal flights

The overhauled Citi travel portal launched in March 2023 after months of delays. It's powered by Rocket Travel by Agoda , part of the Booking.com family.

You can access the portal with any credit card earning ThankYou points , and several cards earn bonus points on bookings in the portal. Unfortunately, flights aren't included in these bonus offerings.

With Citi's new portal, you can book flights, hotels, rental cars and attractions of numerous types. The portal also offers two hotel programs: Hotel Collection and Luxury Collection.

Booking flights

I looked at a variety of round-trip routes with the same dates (roughly six months from now) and gathered the following prices:

All of the travel portals generally fared well when it came to searching economy flights versus booking directly. However, there were a few major caveats worth noting.

Southwest Airlines is not bookable on any of the portals, and tickets for low-cost airlines like Spirit Airlines and Frontier are typically more expensive on the Chase and Capital One travel portals than booking directly. Amex Travel didn't display any Spirit Airways or Frontier Airlines flights.

When it came to international flights, all of the bank portals struggled at times to match prices or give comparable results versus booking directly. For a deeper dive on some of these routes and flight prices, we did a broader comparison across 20 flights in this guide .

As a general word of advice, domestic flights should yield the same results and price, but it gets tricky when searching for international fares. Your best bet would be to compare the prices and only use a portal when the prices are identical.

Ease of use

The Amex portal is my favorite for a comprehensible search experience, fast load times for results and the simplicity of parsing through the various options.

capital one travel portal flights

On the other hand, the Capital One portal offers one of the most visually appealing interfaces, with color-coded dates to indicate the lowest prices in a calendar view — plus price drop protection. However, the Capital One portal did not provide as many options as its competitors on some searches. It also yielded higher prices for international routes, but I'm hopeful that the issuer will continue to make improvements in the future.

capital one travel portal flights

Based on millions of data points from Hopper, Capital One is supposed to let you know if this is the best time to book via its price watch prediction feature.

capital one travel portal flights

To standardize the offerings across various airlines, Capital One also provides detailed insights into what flyers can expect from their chosen fare class. With the rise of "basic economy" fares, it's not always clear what amenities are included in your ticket and what you'll have to pay for as extras.

Capital One does an excellent job of explaining in-depth features such as seat pitch, aircraft type, and food and beverage options on board.

capital one travel portal flights

Speaking of basic economy, it's worth noting Amex Travel rarely (if ever) displays these fares. If you're looking for basic economy, you should use another portal.

Citi's new portal does a good job of offering a broad range of results in economy and offering upgrades on the payment page. And being able to book flights plus other travel elements in one transaction is great. However, searching directly for business-class fares is tricky on this portal.

Finally, the Chase portal has seen vast improvements since fully migrating toward its cxLoyalty interface. Previously, when Chase was powered by Expedia, users complained about slow load times and much higher prices than those offered directly by the airlines. Some of those issues seem to have been resolved.

capital one travel portal flights

While the Ultimate Rewards portal could use some work in cleaning up the interface, the overall user experience is much better than before. That said, it's also the portal with the highest frequency of price divergence from booking directly — sometimes higher and sometimes lower.

Redemption value

This is not a criterion we used for evaluating these bank travel portals for this particular article. The value of your points or miles can depend on which particular rewards card you carry. Still, it is worth remembering if you intend to use your credit card's travel portal to earn or redeem points and miles.

Your credit card points or miles are typically worth 1 cent each for flights in your respective travel portal. That's the case with Amex cards that earn Membership Rewards points and Capital One credit cards . Even with the Capital One's premium card (the Venture X), your points are only worth 1 cent each when redeemed for travel through the Capital One portal. The same applies to credit cards earning Citi ThankYou points .

On the other hand, Chase's credit cardholders are incentivized to use the Ultimate Rewards portal via a higher redemption value. With the Chase Sapphire Reserve , your points are worth 1.5 cents each toward travel bookings, while the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Ink Business Preferred Credit Card fetch 1.25 cents per point in value.

capital one travel portal flights

While not as consistent of a program, American Express offers "Insider Fares," allowing cardholders to redeem their points for a better value than 1 cent apiece on select domestic and international itineraries. However, these can be quite specific.

capital one travel portal flights

Select Amex business credit cardholders can also leverage the Pay with Points benefit to get a 25% to 50% points rebate when booking select airfare through Amex Travel — yet another incentive to book through the portal.

Due to all these card-specific circumstances, we didn't make redemption values a main criterion for judging these portals for booking flights. Rather, we focused on each portal's user interface and the availability of competitive fares — as those two factors will probably be the determinants as to whether travelers end up using them.

Related: Why I love the Amex Business Platinum's Pay With Points perk

Bottom line

Credit card issuers have improved their travel portals over the years, but they're still far from perfect. While there isn't a clear winner for the best travel portal, each has unique features and incentives for its cardholders.

If you decide to book a flight through your issuer's travel portal, be sure to compare that price against booking directly with the airline to get the best deal possible. And don't forget that you may want to book directly anyway to avoid any headaches down the road. If you need to change or cancel your airfare, booking with a third party can complicate matters when plans change.
