Challenge Tour from Ireland move to Finland

There are still eleven races to go until the end of the tour and this partly explains the numerous defections among the best, while some certainties also have weight

The Challenge Tour remains in Northern Europe. From Ireland move to Finland for the Vierumäki Finnish Challenge (4-7 August) and then move to Denmark for the Frederikshavn Challenge (11-14 August) before two events in Sweden.

Vierumäki Finnish Challenge, schedule

On the path of the Vierumäki Resort, in the city from which the club takes its name, seven Italians will be involved: Luca Cianchetti, Giacomo Fortini, Jacopo Vecchi Fossa, Federico Maccario, Edoardo Raffaele Lipparelli, Filippo Bergamaschi and Michele Ortolani, all with the aim of to do well and perhaps to feed the hopes, with a feat, to go up the Road To Mallorca (order of merit).

Also stop the English Todd Clements, who won last week in the Irish Challenge, the Norwegian Kristian Krogh Johannessen and the French Clément Sordet who took a rest. In total, ten of the top twenty of the Road To Mallorca will be on the field, almost all those who are from the tenth place down where nothing has yet been established.

Lorenzo Scalise, 25th in the order of merit, also preferred to participate in the Cazoo Open. There will not be the Danish Marcus Helligkilde, reigning champion, also in Wales, but because last year he won the money list of the circuit and now plays on the DP World Tour. The prize pool is 250,000 euros of which 40,000 will go to the winner.

The European Challenge Tour has today announced a record-breaking global schedule for the 2022 season which will see the Road to Mallorca’s total prize fund surpass the €8,000,000 mark for the first time. The first 20 players will earn DP World Tour cards for the 2023 season.

The 2022 Road to Mallorca will consist of 31 tournaments staged across three continents in 18 different countries.

It includes a return to Scotland for the first time in four years when the Farmfoods Scottish Challenge supported by The R&A takes place in the final week of May. The event, which will be held in association with 1999 Open Champion Paul Lawrie, will be the first of 19 tournaments in consecutive weeks where the Road to Mallorca will weave through 15 countries and end in France, from September 29 – October 2.

The Challenge Tour also returns to China for the first time since 2019 with back-to-back events, including the Foshan Open, where players will be given a final chance to earn their spot in the season-ending Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final supported by The R&A.

The Grand Finale of the Challenge Tour 2022 takes another bite from the venue of 2021.

The finale of the 2022 Road to Mallorca will return to Club de Golf Alcanada, the setting for the 2019 Grand Final, where the top 45 players on the Road to Mallorca Rankings will compete for one of 20 life changing DP World Tour cards for the 2023 season. The top five graduates will also receive the John Jacobs Bursary, announced last month as part of DP World’s title partnership of the European Tour group’s main Tour.

The 2022 schedule includes seven co-sanctioned events with the Sunshine Tour, including a maiden visit to Tanzania for the Mount Kilimanjaro Klassic at Kilimanjaro Golf & Wildlife Estate with Tanzania set to become the 52nd country to stage a Challenge Tour event.

European Challenge Tour renews links with Finland

The European Challenge Tour will return to Finland after a four-year absence with the announcement of the SK Golf Challenge at St. Laurence Golf from 12-15 June 2008.

The SK Golf Challenge, the first Challenge Tour event to be played in the country since 2004 when Finland’s Roope Kakko won the Volvo Finnish Open as an amateur, will carry a prize fund of €150,000. The 2008 SK Golf Challenge will be the first event in a three year agreement with promoters SK Festivals Oy.

St. Laurence Golf, located at Lohja, 50 kilometres west of the capital, Helsinki, was opened in 1990. The course is located on the grounds of the old Gunnarla Mansion and boasts two championship courses, Kalkki-Petteri (old course) and PyhठLauri (new course) along with a new six-hole practice course. It is widely regarded as one of the best golf facilities in Finland.

Finland hosted one of the first events on the Challenge Tour in its inaugural season of 1989 and the Volvo Finnish Open continued for 16 years until 2004. For six of those years there were in fact two Challenge Tour events in the season with the Finnish Masters from 1998-2000 preceding the Talma Finnish Challenge from 2001-2003.

The SK Golf Challenge in Finland further strengthens the ties in the Nordic region, joining events in Sweden, Norway and Denmark on the 2008 Challenge Tour schedule. Ultimately, SK Festivals’ goal for 2011 is to promote an event on The European Tour International Schedule in Finland.

Visas not required for citizens of Australia, Canada, USA and New Zealand for up to 90 days in a period of 180 days for all Schengen countries (see https://tinyurl.com/lkho3qg for countries part of the Schengen). Please ensure your passport is stamped on arrival in the Schengen area. For all other nationalities and for longer stays in countries covered by the Schengen Agreement (Australian New Zealand, Canadian and US passport holders), please contact the relevant embassy. Stays of longer than 90 days in the Schengen area require a long stay visa for the country you are spending most time in. However long stay visas are unlikely to be issued unless there is a valid reason (eg. studying in country). Unfortunately we cannot assist in obtaining visas for long stays due to individual country visa requirements.
