Dear Sir or Madame:

I am Silvia Logan. I live in Ottawa, Canada. In order to those road trips in the USA such as Syracuse, Alexandria Bay, Tupper Lake, Lake Placid, and Saranac Lake, do you need to drive because I do not drive a car at all. Would there by a chauffer driving a small group of people? I would very kindly love to have replies to my questions.

' src=

Thanks for your questions, Silvia! I did do some checking into this a few months ago in response to another inquiry, and as far as I can tell, there isn’t a regularly scheduled service taking people from Ottawa to upstate New York. One option would be to check with Ottawa Valley Tours or Travac Tours; they both organize bus trips to all sorts of places in our region, and they might have one going that way. Tours by Locals ( https://www.toursbylocals.com/Ottawa-Tours ) might also be able to organize a customized tour. Good luck!

There are many places in the area of the Ottawa Valley I would like to visit, however said I DO NOT DRIVE A CAR. I am more than happy to help pay for gas.

Hi Mireille,

Glad to hear you are interested in visiting the Ottawa Valley! Ottawa Road Trips is not a tour company or a ride-sharing service; on this site, I simply provide information to help people plan their own trips.

You might want to look into bus tours run by Travac Tours or Ottawa Valley Tours.

Alternatively, there are several places near Ottawa you can reach by bus or train. For instance, Ontario Northland runs buses to Arnprior, and VIA Rail serves Smiths Falls and Casselman.

Wherever your travels take you, have fun!

25 Best Day Trips From Ottawa (Under 2 Hour Drive)

Table of Contents

Ottawa is a great city not just for the things you can do in its downtown core, but also for its proximity to so many amazing day trips.

I used a car share service my first year in Ottawa and took so many day trips I was finally convinced to buy my own car so I could go on more. My dog would come with me to adventure on the trails – and meet all the locals in the small towns who always have treats for him.

You’ll find tons of options for activities. If you’re into food, head to Montreal for Schwartz’s Deli. If you want to paddle in the summer, go to Wakefield in Quebec. Love hiking? Take a day trip to Calabogie or Algonquin Park.

You’ll find lots of adventures that can make your visit to Ottawa even more thrilling.

Let’s dive into these Ottawa day trips that cover every season!

In Bon Echo park you’ll find Mazinaw Lake, which is the second deepest lake in Ontario.

This is where you can see Ontario’s largest collection of rock paintings which are painted in red ochre and show human and animal figures, as well as abstract and geometric symbols.

Ottawa Travel Planning Guide

🚑  Should I buy Ottawa travel insurance?

100% YES!  — There’s a misconception that Canada has “free healthcare” for everyone. Nope! Only Canadians. So you’ll need to get travel insurance to visit Ottawa. I recommend this one.

💧 Can you drink the tap water in Ottawa?

Yes – ish  — While you can technically drink the tap water in Ottawa, as a local I don’t recommend it. Old hotels especially can have some nasty things in their pipes. Instead, get a filtered water bottle . ( Read more )

Yes  — Renting a car in Ottawa is one of the best ways to get around! You’ll be able to see more of the city and beyond, like the epic hiking trails. I recommend Discover Cars for the cheapest rates possible.

🏩  What’s the best way to book my Ottawa accommodations?

For Ottawa hotels,  Booking  is the best site. If you’re considering an Ottawa Airbnb, don’t forget to also check  VRBO , which is often cheaper than Airbnb. My #1 hotel recommendation in Ottawa is the Fairmont Chateau Laurier.

✈️  What’s the best site to buy Ottawa flights?

For finding cheap Ottawa flights, I recommend  Skyscanner . You can even set a price alert to find out when flights are on sale.

🎫  Do I need a Visa for Ottawa?

Likely Not  — U.S. and most European Passport holders don’t need a Visa to visit Canada.

8 Lovely Day Trips From Ottawa (+ How To Get There)

Links in this article may earn us a little money if you book/ order stuff. More here

Check Out These Awesome Day Trips From Ottawa!

There are quite a few places to drive to around Ottawa that make an awesome one-day adventure. Stunning nature parks, hikes, small towns, and other attractions can make for a great day whether you are travelling from Ottawa in the summer or winter!

We really like this area of the province known as Eastern Ontario. The Ottawa Valley and the surrounding landscape, which is dotted with lakes and rivers, is visually very scenic and tranquil.

Eric has had the chance to explore several smaller places over the years (like Almonte) but only so many of these places make a solid day trip from Ottawa (for the purposes of a visitor or a local).

There are even bigger cities that offer up a different option. Whether you are a family travelling with kids or you’re looking for a simple getaway with friends, there is a day trip from Ottawa to suit everyone. Let’s get started.

A “day trip” is anything that is 2.5 hours driving (or less) from Ottawa. Day trips from Ottawa are best completed if you have a car since minimal public transit options exist. So, you can  compare here for rental car prices in Ottawa .

Diefenbunker Museum + Carp

Address: 3929 Carp Rd, Carp, ON K0A 1L0, Canada

people walking into metal barn entrance at diefenbunker.

In our opinion, one of the coolest day trips from Ottawa is to head to the Diefenbunker Museum . Located in the small town of Carp, the Diefenbunker is the name given to the Cold War-era bunker.

This special bunker was built to protect very important Canadians (government officials, mostly) in case nuclear war reached Canada. The Prime Minister at the time in the late 1950s was John Diefenbaker…. so you might get the name now!

Over the years, this massive underground facility has been restored and turned into a museum. It’s like a giant time capsule where you can learn all about the history of the bunker, Canada’s involvement in the Cold War, and lots of other cool historical points.

Did you know that the Bank of Canada built a vault in there to house all the gold? Well, you can go and see it!

scale model of bunker in diefenbunker museum.

You can wander through the museum – spread around most of the 100,000 square foot bunker – on a self-guided tour or you can join one of the guided tours.

That is included with your admission ticket. We did a guided tour and it was honestly really, really great. We had a passionate and informative guide who brought the museum to life and we definitely learned a lot.

If you head to the Diefenbunker Museum, you’ll be passing through the small town of Carp which you should also explore before you leave.

There are a café, creamery, and even a brewery on the main street through town in case you’re looking for a place to eat before or after you visit the museum.

Ottawa to the Diefenbunker By Car

The best and basically the only way to get to the Diefenbunker is by car. Luckily, the route is very simple – just take Hwy 417 west out of Ottawa and then the exit for Carp Road northwest towards the town of Carp.

Once you pass through the small town of Carp, the entrance to the Diefenbunker is on your left. They have a very large parking lot so parking is really easy and free!

Address for Downtown Almonte: 79 Little Bridge St, Almonte, ON K0A 1A0, Canada

old stone mill by river with bridge crossing and blue sky above.

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, a great day trip from Ottawa is Almonte.

The small historic town located on the Mississippi River – which is not the same as the one in the United States – makes a quaint little getaway.

Eric stumbled upon Almonte many years ago through a local connection and the town has held a soft spot in his heart ever since.

There are actually a surprising number of things to do and see when you’re in Almonte.

Fun Fact: The inventor of basketball – John Naismith – was actually born and raised in Almonte and you can find a statue of him and a basketball hoop in the centre of town.

plate on table with fries and a wrap at pub.

The “downtown core” is full of boutique shops while the surrounding area has a few museums, parks, and beaches where you can relax. Eric has been to Almonte Beach and it was good for a dip in the summertime.

A highlight of visiting Almonte is to relax by the river at the local pub/eatery the Barley Mow .

It’s a great place to stop in for lunch or to enjoy a drink with locals and others passing through the area.

There is also a really good ice cream stand called The Almonte Ice Cream Shop which you can try out after!

Ottawa to Almonte By Car

If you’re looking to head to Almonte from Ottawa, the only way to get there is by car. Luckily the drive is very simple – just take Hwy 417 west out of Ottawa and head south on March Road (49).

You just follow this street all the way to the heart of Almonte – it turns into Main Street East. The drive takes roughly 45 minutes so it’s very easy to head out in the morning and return in the evening without much hassle.

Rafting on the Ottawa River

Addresses: 40 OWL Lane, Foresters Falls (Owl Rafting) and 1260 Grants Settlement Rd, Foresters Falls (Wilderness Tours)

If you’re looking for a bit of an adrenaline rush, you might consider a more extreme day trip from Ottawa. How about going whitewater rafting on the Ottawa River? To do this you should check out Owl Rafting or going with Wilderness Tours .

Eric has been rafting with both companies (located relatively close to one another) and both companies made for an incredible day out on the water.

Rafting the Ottawa River itself was super fun and very safe given that the guides and the both company are very knowledgeable and well-accredited.

The area is just one part of the Ottawa Valley which is quite beautiful so it’s also a great way to go and “get outdoors” for the day.

As a side note, both Owl Rafting and Wilderness Tours have large grounds with cabins, camping facilities, and a main area with cafeteria (Wilderness had a large outdoor patio and bar area with lawn games), waterfront amenities, and more.

Both companies served up breakfast at the main hall and bus you out to the starting point to meet the rafts. There are also different intensities to suit your group. We’d highly recommend a trip to either!

If you’re in the area, check out Whitewater Brewing Co. for a locally-made pint after rafting!

Ottawa to Owl Rafting By Car

If you’re thinking about going rafting for the day, Owl Rafting is located in Foresters Falls. This is a small town located northwest of Ottawa along the Ottawa River.

You basically just take Highway 417 (the Trans-Canada Highway) almost all the way there and the driving time is only about 1 hour 30 minutes. This distance makes it quite easy to get there and back in a single day.

Address for Calabogie Brewery (right in town): 12612 Lanark Rd, Calabogie, ON K0J 1H0

large rock extending off cliff over top of green trees in below valley.

Known for its rugged, rolling landscape, beautiful lake, and numerous trails, Calabogie is a gem of the Ottawa Valley. It’s no surprise that Calabogie is a popular day trip from Ottawa in all seasons.

Calabogie is likely best known for Calabogie Peaks Resort. This all-season resort is situated at one of the larger mountains in Ontario with excellent skiing/snowboarding.

The area also has some great hiking trails – like the famous Eagles Nest Lookout Trail which is part of the larger Manitou Mountain Trail (which snakes around the same area as the Resort).

There are a number of other hikes in the area like Dacre Heights , Sugar Mountain/Wabun Lake , and the K&P Trail, among others.

The area is also known for its immense ATV/dirt biking trail system – and Tom Irwin Adventure Tours , a local company, will take you out safely and show you how it’s done!

If that’s not for you, you can always head to Calabogie for a relaxing day by the lake – or paddle the lake with a rental from Mad River Paddle Co .

As for “in town”, there are several local shops and businesses you can check out. Calabogie Brewing Co is a popular stop for some local beer.

You can swing by to grab a few take-home cans or you can choose their back patio with chairs that overlook the Madawaska River as it heads out of town.

You can also grab a bite to eat at Redneck Bistro on the other side of the street. They have a huge menu and lots of beer on tap!

red barn with garage door and brewery sign in front.

For coffee, head to Oh-el-la is a cute café with both indoor and outdoor seating. It’s a good place for a coffee but they also do a nice light breakfast and have a few other food items you can munch on.

You can check out lots of other things to see and do in this detailed guide on things to do in Calabogie .

Ottawa to Calabogie By Car

The best (and pretty much only) way to get to Calabogie is by car. The total driving time is about 1 hour and 10 minutes. Leaving Ottawa, you take Highway 417/Trans-Canada Hwy west towards Arnprior.

Then, exit the highway for Calabogie Road/508 around Glasgow Station (shortly after the 417 becomes one road). Route 508 will head southwest and hug the Madawaska River bringing you right into town.

Pro Tip:  You’ll pass through Burnstown on the 508 so stop into Neat Cafe for a wood-fired pizza, coffee, or even a live show if you’re planning on staying out late!

Address for Visitor Information Centre: 209 Ontario St, Kingston, ON K7L 2Z1, Canada

downtown kingston ontario buildings and boats at historic waterfront.

Diving into Canadian history is very easy to do if you head for Kingston on a day trip. If you’re new to Ontario Away, you should know that we have a slight bias towards Kingston.

Eric lived and worked in Kingston for the better part of a decade and so we really enjoy the city and make frequent visits. You can even watch us explore Kingston on YouTube .

Having said that, there truly are many things to see and do in Kingston. Kingston was the original capital of Canada back in the day and is known as the “Limestone City” because of the material used in many of the historic downtown buildings.

Aside from walking the beautiful waterfront you can also check out top attractions like Fort Henry , the Kingston Penitentiary , or head out on a guided cruise of the Thousand Islands or on the Kingston Trolley Tour .

red old trolley car parked on street with old building behind in kingston ontario.

If you’re not into history, downtown Kingston is absolutely packed with shops, restaurants, cafes, and pubs.

We won’t get too into the details because we have numerous posts on all these topics which you can find below.

  • Favourite Kingston Bars, Breweries, and Pubs
  • Top Restaurants in Kingston
  • Lovely Cafes in Kingston

Of course, to give you something to work with – you might want to check out Kingston Brew Company which is down near the Kingston Visitor Information Centre (located in an old train station).

Kingston is also a good day trip option at any time of the year because there are many ways to enjoy the summer sun as well as activities to do in the winter – like skating at Springer Market Square.

Ottawa to Kingston By Car

If you want to explore Kingston from Ottawa, there are many ways to get there. For the purposes of a day trip, the best way to travel is by car – but you have two options for routes:

The first option is to take Highway 416 south out of Ottawa until you hit Highway 401 heading west.

The total driving time is around 2 hours and it’s very straightforward on just the two highways. Kingston has many highway exits – an exit at Division Street will bring you right to downtown.

The other more scenic driving option is to sneak your way across the rural landscape on a route that is made up mainly of Hwy 15.

You’ll pass through several small towns like Carleton Place and Smiths Falls and eventually end up a bit northeast of Kingston. Just keep driving, turn right on Highway 2, and cross the Causeway Bridge to head downtown.

The driving time is a tad bit longer than the strict highway option above but it is a little more scenic and adventurous. It’s actually one of Eric’s favourite drives in all of Ontario – a post that we are planning to write in the future!

Ottawa to Kingston By Train

If you don’t want to drive to Kingston, you actually could take the train – but it comes with some details to consider.

The Via Rail train does run between the two cities but the schedule might not work for a day trip to get there and back.

Another thing to consider is the fact that the train station in Ottawa is a little bit far from downtown and the train station in Kingston is very far from downtown.

In either case, you are likely to grab a bus or taxi to get into the different city centres which add to your travel time. That said, the train trip is around 2 hours and it’s quite pretty. You can learn more at the Via Rail website .

Ottawa to Kingston By Bus

To get to Kingston from Ottawa by bus, you can choose to take the Megabus . They run an Ottawa-Toronto route twice daily and it stops in Kingston. The earliest route leaves Ottawa at 9:10 am from St. Laurent Station, Platform E.

They also run a return route from Kingston to Ottawa later in the day (5:55pm Kingston departure).

The other bus company that is recently into Ontario is FlixBus . They are European (German) and we’ve travelled with them numerous times in the past.

They also run an early route most days (leaves 7:30 am or 9:00 am most days) and a return route that leaves Kingston at 6:20 pm latest.

So, for the sake of a day trip, it’s possible to get to Kingston to Ottawa and back in a single day with a few hours to explore the city. One thing to note, however, is that tickets are cheaper the more in advance you buy them.

A last-minute bus day trip to Kingston is possible – but might be a little costly when you work out the bus fares for your particular day.

Also keep in mind that Megabus leaves from St. Laurent Station while FlixBus leaves from closer to Downtown Ottawa at ByWard Market (33 George Street, Ottawa)!

Bonnechere Caves

Address: 1247 Fourth Chute Rd, Eganville, ON K0J 1T0, Canada

Full disclosure: We haven’t actually been to the Bonnechere Caves but they are a very popular natural phenomenon/ attraction in Ontario and we didn’t want to leave them off the list.

We are dying to visit and we will write up a whole post when we do so keep you posted on that!

The caves are located in Eganville which is definitely easiest to get to with a car.

The driving time is about 1 hour and 20 minutes to the northwest of Ottawa so it’s definitely doable in a day trip.

Gananoque/1000 Islands

Address for Gananoque 1000 Islands Visitor Centre: 10 King St E, Gananoque, ON K7G 1E6, Canada

woman with sunglasses posing for photo on 1000 islands cruise.

If you’re looking to get out on the water for the day, you could always head down to Gananoque which is located on the Saint Lawrence River.

This is another smaller historic city that is similar to Kingston in that there are a handful of attractions you can check out like the 1000 Islands History Museum . There are also some parks and beaches along the shoreline for a bit of a relaxing time.

Of course, it’s no secret that Gananoque is the gateway to the 1000 Islands – a large island chain that extends along the river between Canada and the USA.

The islands are beautiful to sail through and also hold important cultural and historical significance due to their location between the countries.

They are a popular place for cottage rentals and you might even want to head for Boldt Castle if you are in the area!

green trees and cabin on small island with lake water around in 1000 islands.

A top activity is to head out on the water on a 1000 Islands boat cruise (which you can do from Kingston or from Gananoque).

The cruises are different lengths and some even offer live entertainment as well as a meal so check the Gananoque cruises website and choose one that works best for you and your group.

We have done the 1000 Islands Cruise but left from Kingston so if you want to read about that experience you can do so. The area is beautiful and feels very Canadian – like from a postcard, at times – so we’d recommend Gananoque as a day trip for sure.

Ottawa to Gananoque By Car

Once again the easiest way to get to Gananoque from Ottawa is by car. The drive is very simple and it is similar to the route to Kingston but shorter at 1 hour 40 minutes.

Just take Hwy 416 south out of Ottawa to the 401 and head westbound. There are few exits for Gananoque but Highway 2 takes you right downtown to the waterfront.

Ottawa to Gananoque By Train

It’s theoretically possible to take the Via Rail from Ottawa to Gananoque. However, for the purposes of a day trip, we’re not sure if the schedules would work out.

You can have a look at the Via Rail website . The train would be the same amount of time as driving at around 1 hour 40 minutes, in case you were wondering.

downtown montreal high rise buildings from vantage point with blue sky behind.

Last – but certainly not least – you could always head for the city of Montreal on a day trip from Ottawa.

Admittedly, we like to focus on more Ontario-based locations on this website but for the purposes of thoroughness, we’ve decided to slip in Montreal because it is a great option.

You could also head for Mont Tremblant and or other provincial parks in Québec – but we’ll leave those off the list for now.

Montreal is the largest city in Québec and it is also one of the largest cities in all of Canada so there is quite a bit to do and see if you visit.

For those of you unaware, Québec is the French-speaking province in Canada but you can converse in English in Montreal quite easily as it is a bilingual city. There are lots of shops and cafes to visit – and places where you can eat local delicacies like smoked meat or poutine if you want!

Montreal also has quite a bit of history tied to the founding of Canada. You can learn all about this rich history in the Old Town down at the Old Port of Montreal along the water.

A top attraction here is the Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal which you shouldn’t miss. There are also a number of museums around the city and interesting attractions like La Ronde Amusement Park .

A must-do, if you’re visiting Montreal, is to hike up Mount Royal – the place from which the city is named – to the panoramic lookout over the city.

You can take great photos from up there and the surrounding green space (Mount Royal Park) on the mountain makes for great exercise.

We’ve been to Montreal many times and actually have a number of posts about exploring the city – like how to spend one day in Montreal – on our other travel website (Penguin and Pia) which we have linked as a resource for you.

Ottawa to Montreal By Car

Once again, the easiest way to get to Montreal is by car. You basically just take Highway 417 heading East out of the nation’s capital and eventually cross into Québec. From there you’ll only be a short distance to downtown Montreal.

The total driving time is around 2 hours and there’s lots of paid parking downtown. Quick note: Some Montreal drivers can be a little aggressive so keep that in mind!

Ottawa to Montreal By Train

If you don’t have a car, travelling by train is actually an option for once. The Via Rail train runs between Ottawa and Montreal numerous times a day and if you purchased the “Escape Fare” it can actually be affordable.

The train station in Ottawa is further from downtown so you’ll have to get there but the station you arrive at in Montreal is right in the heart of downtown.

It also connects to the Metro for easy navigation. The train travel time is only about 2 hours so it’s certainly doable in the course of a day trip.

Ottawa to Montreal By Bus

Since Greyhound shut down their routes in Canada in 2021, there is, unfortunately, no bus option between these two cities. As of 2024, not even Megabus to the newly-arrived Flixbus service this route. Kind of shocking – we’ll keep this updated if it changes.

Top 5 airlines serving from Ottawa to the United States

I wish that seats closer to the front of the plan were available, but when I booked the flight the seats were VERY expensive so I did not book seats at that time. The day before flying only seats at the back of the plane were available. It takes so long to board the plane and empty the plane on arrival due to SO many roller bags.

Crew was rude.didn’t even say hi or welcome to board

Nothing special. Unacceptable wait for baggage on arriving in Calgary

Departure delay on a late night flight. Made us even later. Tired but got home.

Westjet forced me to put my carry-on baggage in check-in probably because I was assigned seat 23A (the last row seat), which had no cabin space, which is unfair. I wanted to carry on my luggage so that I don't have to wait at the airport for my luggage. Also, because there was no cabin space, I was forced to keep my laptop bag under the seat, which I didn't want to as I was carrying 2 laptops and charger. The airline should basically tell people that if you are assigned a last row seat, then you are not allowed a cabin baggage or a personal item.

Easy processing, flight time was quick and staff was professional and kind.

It was delayed by two ours very full no room to move

They seem to have squeezed out a little more legroom in these planes! It was very nice to not have to fold in half to fit in the seats!

Flight late …60 minutes No food No wifi No entertainment system A disaster!!!

No real issues just wasnt able to hear / understand any announcements flight attendant was making but everything else was really good- ended up checking my carry on case for free which made deboarding quicker. I would fly West Jet for all my flights.

Leg room was lacking. Legs crammed into seat in front.

T hey did a great job. Flight was on time .

the plane was old. the wifi didn’t work. the entertainment was boring and dated. the charging ports were impossible to find. i was mostly ignored by flight attendants that had no problem speaking to the man beside me. i got two drinks the entire time i was on the plane.

Crew was not very helpful. They forgot to serve me coffee and had to wait for a long time.It looked as if they were not very happy with what they were doing.

The flight I was connecting with waited for me even though my 1st flight was late. I really appreciated that.

The seat is too hard and my back and bottom are having servers pain

There was no lounge for passengers waiting before boarding the aircraft at F65, so passengers are just sitting on the floor or just spread everywhere the premises before boarding.

Great crew, friendly. Found the trip long just sitting with no onboard entertainment

All went fine. Boarding was efficient, staff was really friendly, and we were kept up to date on any changes to our itinerary. My only note for improvement is that on this particular plane, the recline in economy class was negligible. I know it's a coach seat, but I had another UA flight (SFO to BWI) and the seat was more comfortable with better recline.

Really good experience with a redeye flight from SFO to BWI. Boarding was efficient, plane was comfortable and newer than others, lots of audio and video choices, and staff was great. I appreciate United's service.

Tight transfer in Montreal. (15 min) However, we made it, as did my luggage.

The E195-E2 is a great aircraft! Leather seats, lots of legroom and SO quiet! The flight crew is terrific!

Check in was slow because of passenger ahead in Reserve line. Seats were somewhat uncomfortable.

First time with Porter. Amazing experience overall, will be my airline of choice in North America whenever possible. Liked the quality of food and how it was served but one suggestion- a hot meal on the longer flights, perhaps?

Delayed by 2.5 hours. This happened previously on my flight from YOW to YVR on Dec. 26.2023. This is a terrible airline. The reason was there was lack of ground crew. This is a known event. AVOID PORTER AIRLINES IF YOU CAN. There is a reason half the plane was empty.

The airline arrival at the downtown airport is a big plus.. Food and beverage was excellent. Their non weather related cancellation is horrible. Overall I gave the airline 7 over 10 Tips for people flying porter from Boston. The airline doesn’t have inflight entertainment No TV No WIFI. Bring your entertainment with you.

The airline arrival at the downtown airport is a big plus.. Food and beverage was excellent. Their non weather related cancellation is horrible. Overall I gave the airline 7 over 10

Wasn’t on the flight- again. Bad weather in Halifax and I was in an accident. What a poor experience to have to pay for all this flight and not be on it

I didn’t make my flight due to poor weather and I had an accident driving there. I tried to get my money back or even credit and nothing. I have an entire flight both to Florida and back that I paid for and no one will give me any money back. I know this isn’t just Porter and it’s 3rd party- however airlines should allow these companies to take money for things they don’t get. I’m so upset. Who can afford a full flight they never take?

Flight Ottawa to Toronto canceled and no crew was available to direct me on what to do. I opened a file and I wait to be compensated.

I didn’t like the fact that all the customs officers went to lunch so I was in line for 90 minutes due to where the staff directed me. We were told three very different reasons for why the plane was delayed. It was a crowded plane with difficult storage situations for the Carry On bags. The Air Canada airline staff were all very good and professional. I was so disappointed in my cheese and fruit box as the cheese had molded and the fruit wasn’t fresh so I couldn’t eat the majority of the food. This was the last meal I could find as the restaurants had closed when I got in to my destination. I think you could work on improving the food quality.

Once again my complaint is how close the seats are together. Also, the bathrooms were not very clean by the second half of the flight.

Excellent in flight service, perhaps the best we've ever had. Business class feels tired and needs improvement to compete with other airlines. The food looked good but tasted terrible. Check in was quick, the flight arrived early and our luggage was on our flight with us.

The staff were so kind and helpful. We flew back from NY with another airline and it was horrible. We will always stick with Air Canada as everything was far better!

The boarding process in Toronto bad as they share space with domestic flights and when those domestic flights come in you are locked out behind closed doors until they are done and then its a mad rush to get your boarding gates and board. This is not so much due to Air Canada but with the GTAA, but Air Canada could use different gates especially early morning in order to prevent such travel angst.

Terrible quality wifi and they charge a lot for it. They nickel and dime you for everything.

Not happy with Air Canada . Flight was cancelled got the run around trying to get another flight that was direct none to be found ended up going to Denver then onto Austin adding 7 hours to our trip. Was travelling with some one who had walking issues that’s why we were happy to have a direct flight then it didn’t happen adding more stress on her

Well you cancelled our direct flight to Austin from Toronto granted you got us on another flight but sent us to Denver then onto Austin delaying our arrival time in Austin by 7 hrs I was flying with 3 other people none of us were happy with our Air Canada experience

I wish there had been more seat options...when I tried to book, there were only.middle seats available. Do travel agents get first pick??

As is pretty much the norm with Air Canada now, we left late from the gate (45 minutes late). This is my 12th flight with AC in the last 12 months and 10 of those flights were either late or cancelled. AC essentially has a monopoly in Canada so they have carte blanche to charge exorbitant rates now and give poor service, with no repercussions.

Of all the countries I've flown to and airlines from around the world, I have never had such a dismissive an arrogant employee during boarding. After waiting in line for 20 minutes to board, I was sent to a second line for Passport verification. Natalie from Flair, repeatedly tried to scan my passport which didn't work for some reason but was too lazy to input my information manually. Bar code scanners aren't 100% reliable as we all know. She asked me my birthdate 3 times, made me wait to be the last person aboard and then smugly threatened me that my only bag could be charged for (same backpack I used as on my arrival as carry on). Natalie working in Ft. Lauderdale and the was the epitome of lobotomized tiktok brain with the charm of junk mail.

Food selection is very poor and sears are very uncomfortable.

Flight was 3 hrs late and another 2 hrs wait for baggage to arrive on carousel and a $7.00 food voucher that arrived as we were boarding our flight.

Seat rows so close together no one dares to put their seats back. Knees pressed against the seat in front, had to find a position putting my legs under the seat in front. But for 6 hours keeping that one position was ridiculous. All savings on the purchase price are taken back through charge backs for luggage $200 each way, Seat selection $44 per seat or you are seated by a computer randomly. Wife sat 5 rows away. Would avoid Flair in the future

The flight was safe (priority). Everything else is low-cost: too hard, delays, mediocre boarding, cost for carry-on and checked luggage.

Flair flight was 4 hours late due to not having a crew and the plane was filthy. Just water service Terrible experience flight 1513

Flair did not notify you when they changed gate number!

Can't be happy with a 5 hour delay. Only given $10 voucher for food and still EVERYTHING was an upcharge during the flight.

TThe first time I have ever flown with flare and both ways sucked

There was no entertainment There was no food or beverage service , not even a glass of water The plane door could not be opened upon arrival

18 Awesome Day Trips from Ottawa (Under 2 Hours Away) + Maps

One of the best things about Ottawa it’s proximity to other amazing places. There are so many beautiful small towns, outdoor adventures, and nearby cities that make for fun day trips from Ottawa. Winter, summer, and fall many of the small towns and park near Ottawa are beautiful and have different activities and scenery to offer.

My criteria for a day trip is somewhere that you can drive to (or reach by train, or bus) in under 2 hours. Get an early start, and you can be there before breakfast and enjoy a full day exploring before you head home. I like to spend my summers taking day trips from Ottawa in between exploring Ottawa itself. Here are some of my favourite places!

Day Trips from Ottawa

1. merrickville [1 hour from ottawa].

Merrickville is tiny little town less than an hour from Ottawa, and it’s perfect for a relaxing day trip. The main street (St Lawrence) is all independent shops that sell clothes, soaps, garden decorations, and beautiful glass pieces. Merrickville is along the Rideau River, and part way across the bridge from one side to the other is a small island that is home to the Merrickville Ruins. The ruins were once a woolen mill, and today you can explore the ruins and there’s a small museum in the main building.

Don’t miss the Goose & Gridon pub for the perfect Instagram photo opp, or the beautiful Stella Luna location on Main St West. It’s my favourite Stella Luna location, and few people know it’s there! Get yourself a gelato and explore the town.

2. Perth [1 hour from Ottawa]

The beautiful little town of Perth, Ontario, is the perfect spot for your next day trip. There is so much to see and do in things historic town, ranging from quirky to adventurous. Discover a Mammoth Cheese that is taller than you, have lunch on a waterfront patio, check out beautiful shops in historic buildings, and visit the Perth Wildlife Reserve or kayak the Tays. 3. Chutes de Plaisance [40 minutes from Ottawa]

Pack a picnic and go for a drive to one of the best-kept-secrets in the region. Chutes de Plaisance is a massive waterfall only a 40 minute day trip from Ottawa. I was amazed to discover that there was a waterfall this big so close! It is so large that you cannot see the whole thing at once. Explore the waterfall by following trails alongside it and stopping at the three observation points.

There are beautiful picnic areas and washrooms at Chutes de Plaisance. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy a day there. This is the perfect day trip from Ottawa if you want to enjoy time outside. Day passes are required and can be purchased on arrival.

Chutes de Plaisance

4. Bonnechere Caves [1.5 hours from Ottawa]

The Bonnechere Caves are an awesome, unique way to spend the day. Most of the day trips from Ottawa in this list are small towns that keep you above ground, so the Bonnechere Caves are a little different! My boyfriend and I went one day, and really enjoyed it. There are interesting fossils to look at before you descend in to the caves, and the caves themselves are incredible. Take a picnic lunch with you or stop in Renfrew afterwards for lunch! There’s not a lot else near the Bonnechere Caves, but they’re still worth the drive. You can crawl through a small tunnel within the caves, and you get to experience the caves in the dark.

The caves are open all summer and you can access them on a guided tour.  Guided tours start every 20 to 30 minutes and are about one hour long. There’s no pre-registration required, just show up. Admission is $19 for adults. It’s cool in the caves, so even if it’s a warm summer day bring a light sweater or jacket. Wear sneakers or running shoes!

Bonnechere Caves temporarily closed due to public health measures. Check before you go.

Bonnechere Caves

5. Wakefield [30 minutes from Ottawa]

Wakefield is already one of the most famous day trips from Ottawa, and with good reason. Wakefield is a lovely town in Quebec, so getting there from Ottawa includes a scenic drive through the Gatineau Park. Come for a walk in the town, and to see the red bridge. On warm days in the summer, bring your swimsuit so you can hang out by the water below the bridge.

If you want a relaxing day, the Wakefield Hotel & Spa is located in Wakefield along the Gatineau River.

The best pizza MJMD Pizza de Luigi is some of the best pizza around. It’s handmade in a wood oven, and tastes  amazing . I also highly recommend Pipolinka Bakery for great cookies and Le Hibou for lunch. They have delicious vegetarian and vegan options!

Ottawa to Wakefield day trip

6. Brockville [1 hour 8 minutes from Ottawa]

Small town, unique landmarks, and great waterfront views? Check! Brockville is an amazing day trip from Ottawa if you love small towns but still want some interesting places to see and great activity options. Park near the water and explore the town and the waterfront. Find Canada’s oldest train tunnel, discover the tall ships, or get out on the water yourself with a cruise to the 1,000 Islands or a kayak adventure.

When you are ready for a bite to eat, I recommend Don’s Fish & Chips or The Sweet Little Café. Both places offer meals that you can take with you down to Blockhouse Island, the waterfront area in Brockville that is a perfect place to relax and watch boats go by while enjoying your meal. For more ideas, check out my day trip guide: things to do in Brockville .

Things to do in Brockville

7. Morris Island Conservation Area [47 minutes from Ottawa]

Escape the city and enjoy an amazing day in nature at Morris Island Conservation Area. I recommend this day trip from Ottawa if you are looking for a little bit of peace and quiet. Morris Island Conservation Area has trails, picnic areas, calm water for kayaking or paddling, and it feels like you have left the city far behind. Stay for 4 hours with a day parking pass ($6 when I visited – check the website for the most up to date price information). Check out my Day Trip Guide: Morris Island Conservation Area for more details on activities and what to expect.

Morris Island Conservation Area

8. Chelsea [30 minutes from Ottawa]

Day trips from Ottawa to Chelsea are always awesome – it’s the place that I go most often when I feel like being outside the city. The interaction of Chemin Scott and Chemin du Lac Meech is the nicest area. Park at the Gatineau Park Visitor Centre, and go for a short walk along the Sugarbush trail. It’s beautiful all seasons! Come back in to Chelsea and explore the main street, stop for ice cream, or lunch.  Biscotte & Cie is great place for drink and a sandwich or pastry, and La Cigale is one of my favourite ice cream places.

The Nordik Spa is also located in Chelsea, and it’s a the perfect place for a relaxing day no matter the season. I’ve visited the Nordik Spa in both the summer and winter , it’s always amazing.

9. Gatineau Park [20 minutes from Ottawa]

Love hiking and the great outdoors? Of course you do – and how could you not with a view like this. Gatineau Park is just across the river from Ottawa. Those of us who call Ottawa home are so incredibly fortunate to live next to this amazing place, it’s so close and so much considered to be like a part of Ottawa that putting it on a day trips from Ottawa list might even be a stretch! Hike, cycle, or make your way to Meech Lake and enjoy the beach.

There are hiking trails for every one in Gatineau Park, no matter the level or difficult that you want.  Use this guide to the Gatineau Park Trails to find your next hike!

10. Montreal [2 hours from Ottawa]

Montreal is one of the most interesting cities in Canada. There is so much history, and so many beautiful places to discover! Montreal is only 2 hours away, and you can have any day trip experience you want here whether it’s spending a day in the botanical gardens, eating in Mile End, visiting museums, or exploring Old Montreal! Or, even roller coaster. La Ronde is a fun amusement park day trip.

I have several Montreal guides to help you plan your day trip (or a longer visit to Montreal!)

11. Calabogie [1 hour from Ottawa]

Calabogie is a bit of day trip gem, so this one stays between you and me! There aren’t many day trips from Ottawa that are well-kept secrets… but this one is. My friends and I drove to Calabogie Peaks Resort to hike Skywalk Trail to Eagle’s Nest Lookout. There are a lot of different trails that connect together, so you can take as long (or as short) a route as you want to Eagle’s Nest.

After your hike, relax at the beach by the resort with some snacks and drinks. There are only a few food options on site, so bring your own food. We didn’t kayak, but there are kayaks available for rent too and the lake is beautiful and calm! Calabogie is a popular ski destination in the winter, but most people don’t know what a lovely place it is in the summer.

Here’s the full guide on hiking to Eagle’s Nest and enjoying a day in Calabogie!

Eagle's Nest Lookout Calabogie

12. Almonte [1 hour from Ottawa]

Almonte is a lovely mill town along the Canadian Mississippi River. I went on a day trip from Ottawa to Almonte last summer and surprised by how many great cafés and cute shops there are! And, there’s an amazing waterfall going through the middle of the town. Walk the River Walk from Heirloom Cafe & Bistro to Almonte town hall to see it.

The inventor of basketball, James Naismith, was born and raised just outside of Almonte and you will find a statue of him in town too!

13. The 1000 Islands [1.5 hours from Ottawa]

The 1000 Islands is an exceptional destination for a day trip from Ottawa. Only 1.5 hours away, 1000 Islands has everything from adventurous activities to relaxing patios. On a day trip, take a boat tour in the 1000 Islands and spend some time exploring the town of Gananoque. Enjoy a view from above at the 1000 Islands Tower, or go hiking at one of the many trails in the area.

This is easily one of my favourite places that I have ever visited. If you  haven’t  already visited the 1000 Islands, make it your next day trip! Check out my full 1000 Islands Visitor Guide  for a detailed itinerary and restaurant recommendations.

1000 Islands Hotels

14. Westport [1.5 hours from Ottawa]

Westport is one of my favourite small towns, mainly because of the amazing view from above that you can see from Foley mountain. There is a wonderful, family run vineyard just outside of town and the few bakeries and restaurants in town (it’s a really small place!) are all really good. This is one of the quainter day trips from Ottawa, perfect if you want a relaxing day.

Spend the morning exploring the hiking trails on Foley mountain, and the afternoon exploring the town and visiting a nearby vineyard. Check out my blog post of t hings to do in Westport .

Ottawa to Westport

15. Gatineau [10 minutes from Ottawa]

Gatineau is just across the river – it’s so close that it blends right in to Ottawa so while this isn’t a day trip that requires driving, it is one if you haven’t yet explored Gatineau! The Culture Trail was introduced in 2018, and it’s a great way to see the area. Follow the red line from Jacques Cartier Park and it will take you all through Gatineau.

Make sure to take the detour onto Laval Street to see the beautiful Gatineau umbrella street. There are plenty of great patios here to stop for a drink. The trail is 2km long and will lead you along the Ruisseau de la Brasseurs, to a restaurant called Les Brasseurs du Temps. The beer is excellent, and this restaurant has a lovely patio. Best of all, there’s an amazing (and massive) museum in the basement that goes all through the history of beer in Canada.

16. Kingston [2 hours from Ottawa]

Kingston makes a great day trip from Ottawa for summer. Kingston is a city with lots of history. Make sure to book your  penitentiary tour  in advance.  The penitentiary was at one time home to some of Canada’s most notorious criminals and today offers guided tours that are very popular.

Other things to check out include Fort Henry, built during the war of 1812. One hour guided tours depart regularly. For another bit of history, hop aboard a   Trolley Tour . I’ve heard that Chez Piggy or Wooden Heads Gourmet Pizza or great places for lunch!

Kingston day trip

17. Mont Tremblant [2 hours from Ottawa]

Here’s another popular winter destination that is also a summer gem – Mont Tremblant ! Truth be told, a lot more people know about Tremblant than Calabogie but it’s still less popular in the summer than in the winter.

Mont Tremblant is one of the best, multi-season day trips from Ottawa. Go to Tremblant for skiing, snowshoeing, and cozy cafés in the winter. Come summer enjoy hiking, luge rides down the mountain, cycling, and exploring. The best part about Mont Tremblant is the pedestrian village. It’s easy to walk around, without having to worry about cars! It’s also a very dog friendly area, so bring your fur friend for the day.

If you’re visiting in the summer, Mont Tremblant National Park is a must-visit. It’s got stunning scenery and hiking trails with all different levels of difficult – from kick jaunts to a waterfall to long treks to breathtaking lookouts.

18. Omega Park [1 hour from Ottawa]

Truth be told, I think that Omega Park is mentioned in every Ontario or Quebec blog post that I have. I  love this place. Omega Park makes a great day trip, or you can stay the night ! Omega Park is another one of the all-season day trips from Ottawa, it’s stunning summer or winter .

Omega Park entry is just under $30 per person. Get there right when it opens (usually 10 AM) and drive the loop. In the summer, you can take a wagon ride out to the farm. Come winter, enjoy a sleigh ride through the snow.

If you live in Ottawa and want to see a total eclipse, head for the border

Solar Eclipse: The journey to the path of totality

Social sharing.

If you want the full experience of a total solar eclipse on April 8, you'll have to leave Ottawa and head south.

The Ottawa-Gatineau area will experience a near-total eclipse — the moon is expected to cover about 99 per cent of the sun — but won't be shrouded in complete darkness like other areas.

"The sun is a very, very bright star, so even one per cent of the light is too much light. You're not going to see things like the solar corona, which is only visible when you completely block out the sun," said Nikhil Arora, eclipse outreach coordinator at Queen's University in Kingston, Ont.

Luckily, you don't have to travel far to reach the "path of totality," a swath of North America that will experience full coverage of the sun.

Kingston and nearby Gananoque are hosting eclipse events in public parks.

Some local provincial parks and historic sites are also preparing for eclipse watchers and Queen's will provide some experts to answer questions at several locations.

Arora said Kingston's planning is trying to learn from the 2017 American eclipse, the most photographed to date.

"The biggest thing we need to think about is traffic jams and gridlock. That's what we're trying to avoid," he said. "Kingston Transit is free on that day to be able to reach viewing locations."

If the water is more your style, cruise season has started early in the Thousand Islands area to cater to eclipse watchers.

Gananoque Tourism coordinator Jennifer Baril said the eclipse has kicked off the local tourism season more than a month early.

Plan to change plans

Backup plans are essential if you're "very keen" on getting the total experience, according to eclipse chaser David Makepeace.

  • Where to get solar eclipse glasses in Ottawa
  • Schools taking cautious approach to 'spectacular and rare' eclipse

"The centre line along the path of totality is where the eclipse lasts the longest," he said.

"If you just come inside the northern limit, you might see a minute or minute and a half of [total] eclipse, but if you'd spent that extra hour to drive deeper … you could end up with three and a half minutes."

A man stands with his arms outstretched and appears to be shouting with joy.

Makepeace, who has been chasing and capturing eclipses for 30 years, is planning to travel to Mexico to all but guarantee a clear sky. He recommends watching the weather radar ahead of April 8.

"If you're in the Ottawa area, you may find that it's going to be cloudy here but it's going to be fine in Niagara Falls ,   then drive to Niagara Falls. I know it's a long way … but this is the nature of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," he said.

"If you're willing to cross the border into the States, it's your shortest drive to the longest amount of totality."

N.Y. hotels booked up

Eclipse watchers from around the world have already noticed how much of the path of totality falls along across Upstate New York.

"The hotel rooms on the U.S. side filled up more than a year ago and the short-term rentals have continued to book and book and book as the weeks have gone on," said Corey Fram, director of tourism at the Thousand Islands International Tourism Council.

"So we know visitors are coming."

  • Why next week's solar eclipse has scientists so excited

The small city of Watertown 200 kilometres south of Ottawa is expecting its population to multiply by as many as eight times during the eclipse.

Mayor Sarah Compo Pierce has been involved in planning for the last two years.

"We're expecting an extreme influx of visitors. The highest estimate we've seen so far is 174,000 people, which would be the largest even in anybody's memory to happen in the city," Compo Pierce said.

A mayor poses in a park. There's patchy snow on the ground.

The city is closing most of its non-essential operations and redirecting staff to manage traffic and its centrepiece "Total Eclipse of the Park" event in Thompson Park.

The free event has had people register for tickets from as far away as Italy and South America, Compo Pierce said.

Restaurants and retailers are encouraged to be ready for visitors on April 8, while other businesses such as furniture stores are being asked to reschedule deliveries.

If big crowds aren't your scene, remember the eclipse is available for free wherever you can safely stop and don your eclipse goggles. Some places prefer you don't park on the side of the road and recommend parking lots.

"As long as you can see the sun from your location inside the path of totality, then you're in the right place to see the eclipse," Makepeace said.

When and where the solar eclipse will be crossing the U.S.

The path of totality for the solar eclipse on April 8, 2024.

A total solar eclipse will grace the skies over North America on Monday, one of the most hotly anticipated sky-watching events in recent years.

Weather permitting , millions of people in Mexico, 15 U.S. states and eastern Canada will have the chance to see the moon slip between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light .

The total solar eclipse will be visible along a “path of totality” that measures more than 100 miles wide and extends across the continent. Along that path, the moon will fully obscure the sun, causing afternoon skies to darken for a few minutes.

Follow live updates on the solar eclipse

In all other parts of the continental U.S., a partial solar eclipse will be visible, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun. Exactly how big a bite depends on the location.

The first spot in North America that will experience totality on Monday is on Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PT, according to NASA .

After moving northeast across Mexico, the eclipse’s path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Slivers of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

In Canada, the eclipse will be visible in parts of southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

The timing of the eclipse and the duration of totality varies by location. Most places will experience around 2 minutes of darkness, but the longest periods of totality are typically in the center of the eclipse’s path.

This year, the longest stretch of totality will last 4 minutes and 28 seconds in an area northwest of Torreón, Mexico.

The moon covers the sun during a total solar eclipse in Cerulean, Ky.

Below is a list of timings for some U.S. cities along the path of totality, according to NASA .

  • Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m. CT.
  • Idabel, Oklahoma: Partial eclipse begins at 12:28 p.m. CT and totality at 1:45 p.m. CT.
  • Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m. CT.
  • Poplar Bluff, Missouri: Partial eclipse begins at 12:39 p.m. CT and totality at 1:56 p.m. CT.
  • Paducah, Kentucky: Partial eclipse begins at 12:42 p.m. CT and totality at 2:00 p.m. CT.
  • Carbondale, Illinois: Partial eclipse begins at 12:42 p.m. CT and totality at 1:59 p.m. CT.
  • Evansville, Indiana: Partial eclipse begins at 12:45 p.m. CT and totality at 2:02 p.m. CT.
  • Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
  • Erie, Pennsylvania: Partial eclipse begins at 2:02 p.m. ET and totality at 3:16 p.m. ET.
  • Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
  • Burlington, Vermont: Partial eclipse begins at 2:14 p.m. ET and totality at 3:26 p.m. ET.
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.
  • Caribou, Maine: Partial eclipse begins at 2:22 p.m. ET and totality at 3:32 p.m. ET.

Other resources can also help you figure out when the various phases of the eclipse will be visible where you live, including NationalEclipse.com and TimeandDate.com .

If you plan to watch the celestial event, remember that it’s never safe to look directly at the sun, including through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses. Special eclipse glasses are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent permanent eye damage.

Want to see the next total solar eclipse in 2026? An expert recommends booking travel now.

  • 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years.
  • Travelers worldwide will likely head to Spain, Iceland, and Greenland for the event.
  • A hotel expert encouraged travelers to start planning and booking their trips now.

Insider Today

It'll be two decades before the next total solar eclipse hits the US .

Another option: hop on a plane to Europe and turn the 2026 total solar eclipse into a viewing vacation.

Eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told Space.com that up to 3.7 million people likely traveled for the solar eclipse on Monday.

HotelPlanner's chief communication officer, Philip Ballard, told Business Insider that the eclipse was a major revenue generator for many cities. For places like Austin, Texas, and Rochester, New York, it could have created $1 billion in revenue, Vox reported.

"I would say the total solar eclipse has become a global phenomenon," Ballard said.

Ballard added that the next solar eclipse , which will pass through Iceland, Greenland, and Spain on August 12, 2026, could result in similar tourism and revenue influxes.

And if travelers are considering a trip to Europe for the solar eclipse, Ballard recommends planning your trip now.

Determine your eclipse viewing destination

According to Space.com , 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years. Its path will go through Greenland, parts of western Iceland, and northern Spain.

Choosing where to watch the eclipse will be a tough and important decision for travelers.

Iceland and Greenland have some positives. These regions will experience longer totality times, so viewers can watch the eclipse longer. Plus, the sun will be higher in the sky, so finding a spot to watch the eclipse will be less challenging, Space.com reported.

The downside is that these regions are more likely to be cloudy, according to the outlet.

Related stories

While parts of Spain are likely to offer clearer skies, the eclipse's timing will be shorter and closer to the horizon, which means travelers will need to plan and track down a viewing location with unobstructed views of the western horizon, Space.com reported.

Regardless of the destination, according to the outlet, one bonus is that the strongest meteor shower in the Northern Hemisphere will happen the following night, so travelers can pack two events into one trip.

Book flights and hotels far in advance

Ballard encouraged people to book their hotels in their destination of choice as far in advance as possible.

"You should start looking now and booking hotels now because those cities in the path are already going to be at peak season," Ballard said.

Ballard said it's similar to when a Super Bowl city is determined or a Taylor Swift tour date is announced — you immediately see spikes in bookings. He predicts hotel occupancy rates will hit near-record highs, and room prices may double around the solar eclipse date.

Ballard's general rule of thumb is to book international travel at least three months in advance, but since this is such an anticipated event, booking earlier is smart. His advice is to start discussing plans with friends and family. If you decide on a destination, book a refundable room to keep your options open if plans change.

Regarding purchasing a plane ticket, a study from Expedia states that international travel's sweet spot is at least six months in advance.

According to Expedia, travelers who book six months in advance save an average of 10% more than travelers booking within two months or less.

Skip the hassle of planning altogether and book a solar eclipse tour

Another option is to let a tour operator do the work for you. A handful of tour companies have seen the increased interest in the solar eclipse and launched tours designed around the event.

These tours will have predetermined locations to view the eclipse, hotel blocks reserved, and itineraries highlighting both the region and the eclipse.

However, these can sell out quickly. For example, Space and Telescope created an 11-day tour of Spain around viewing the 2026 solar eclipse. The tour has already sold out as of Wednesday, and the waitlist is full.

Other operators, such as Wilderness Travel and Eclipse Traveler, have similar itineraries for the total eclipse in 2026.
