Best China SIM Cards & eSIM Options | Ultimate 2024 Guide

How can you get China SIM cards? And which China SIM card is best? While some travelers have the option to activate the international roaming on their home country phone plans, that’s either really expensive or not a good option for those who will be in China long-term. The best solution is to get your own Chinese SIM card. Here’s how.

Having traveled around Asia for over 15 years, I highly recommend traveling through China with a smartphone .

You can get map directions, pay for almost anything, use Chinese voice translators , use the popular WeChat app, book Chinese trains , and so much more. In short, your smart phone can take all the most common pains out of traveling so you can focus more on having a good time.

But to do all these things, you need network access for your phone, which often requires buying a local China SIM card.

For those who may not know, a SIM card (short for “subscriber identity module”) is that little card that goes inside your phone that connects you to local service (phone, text, internet). You may not know it’s there…but it is.

Newer phones now have the option to use what’s known as an eSIM, which is a digital version of this small card.

Overall I recommend three ways to connect to China’s mobile network using your phone:

• Purchase a PrePaid SIM Card: If you know for sure that your phone is unlocked, you can purchase a Chinese SIM card (or eSIM card) prior to your arrival in China.

• Purchase a SIM Card in China : If you’re already in China or if it’s too late to purchase a prepaid China SIM card, you can always visit the office of a local service provider in China to get a SIM card. This option takes time, however, so I wouldn’t make this your primary option.
• Rent a Phone / International Roaming: If your phone isn’t unlocked but you still need to use a phone in China, you can either rent a phone or use international roaming with your home carrier.

Before I go on about SIM cards, it’s worth noting that if all you need is internet access, you can always look into your options for getting reliable WiFi in China . There are drawbacks to this method, but in some ways it is easier than trying to get a China SIM card.

In order to better understand how to use your mobile phone internationally or how China treats cellular customers, let’s start off with some basics of Chinese SIM cards.

The Basics – Using a China SIM Card

Although using a SIM card with any phone is generally as easy as inserting it in your phone (or the 5-minute setup process for an eSIM), there are a couple basic -but incredibly important! – things you should know before buying one for China.

Let’s run through the most important ones.

Your Phone Must Be Unlocked for a new SIM (IMPORTANT!)

First thing to know is that your phone needs to be unlocked to use a China SIM card .

If you purchased your phone at a discount (e.g. AT&T or Verizon subsidized the phone or gave it to you “free”), or you currently lease your phone, it’s likely your phone is locked by your carrier.

Unfortunately, if this is the case you can’t use a China SIM card.

Note on Locked Phones

This isn’t the case for phones that offer 2 SIM card slots or for eSIMs. In this case, you can still purchase a SIM or eSIM even if your phone is still locked to your home carrier.

Until you make a request to your carrier and in some cases pay off the balance of your phone entirely, that mobile phone will remain “locked” into that service provider.

Still not sure if your phone is unlocked?

If so, use one of the resources I list below to check if the phone is unlocked.

• Check Your Phone’s Unlock Status (imei.info)
• Check Your Phone’s Compatibility with China Carriers

If it is, you can contact your phone carrier and explain you need the unlock code for your trip to China. As long as you don’t have any outstanding balances on your account, your wireless carrier generally will have zero objections to unlocking your phone.

Expect this process to take a few days, so plan ahead should your trip to China be coming up.

SIM Cards in China Expire with No Use

During my second trip to China, I was surprised to find out after landing that my previous phone plan no longer worked, despite having plenty of credit leftover from the previous trip.

This happened because Chinese phone providers cancel unused SIM cards after a certain amount of time (different for each carrier).

You’ll want to be careful not to buy your Chinese SIM card too far in advance.

Once you buy a prepaid China SIM card, it may only last 30 days upon activation. So time your purchase accordingly and request for your SIM card to activate on the day you land in China.

Remember to also only buy enough credit to last you for your trip. Even if you do revisit China, your leftover credit will likely be forfeited after 30 or 60 days.

Don’t worry, you can always top up your phone in China if you run out of credit.

You Must Register to Activate Your China SIM Card

The Chinese government requires real-name registration to activate a SIM card.

If you purchase a pre-paid Chinese SIM card before you leave (which I recommend), this means you usually have to provide a copy of your passport.

When buying a prepaid China SIM card, don’t be surprised when the company requires you to send in a photocopy of your passport. It’s an unavoidable part of the process to activate the SIM card.

If you purchase the SIM card within China, this could mean providing bio-metric data such as a face scan and fingerprints in addition to your passport.

Best China SIM Card (Recommendation)

Whether you’re purchasing a prepaid China SIM card before you arrive or you’ve decided to purchase a SIM card from within China at a local telecom office, it helps to know what’s available and which are the offers for the best China SIM card plan.

I’m always an advocate for things that make traveling in China easy. So my top pick for the best SIM card for China is one that can be easily purchased online prior to your arrival and that works with pretty many any phone that you might have.

Airalo China eSIM Solution *Recommended*

• eSIM Cards available for immediate use
• Data only (no phone number)
• Various data packages available
• Works all across China
• Available packages for 7, 15 and 30 days

For most people, having a phone number isn’t necessary when traveling. The only thing that matters is DATA. That’s why the Airalo China eSIM is such a good option.

There are multiple eSIMs to choose from, which include various options for validity (7 days, 15 days, or 30 days) as well as data limits (1GB up to 20GB).

Every Airalo eSIM offers coverage across every part of China and works immediately once you land in country. Best of all, setting up an eSIM takes only about 10 minutes from the moment you click “purchase” to the moment when the eSIM is available to use.

Still, you’re going to want to get this set up prior to your visit to China, as well as downloading a good VPN for China .

China Phone Plans (Purchased in China)

There are three major cellular providers in China:

• China Telecom
• China Unicom
• China Mobile

Unfortunately, China Telecom SIM cards don’t work with phones purchased outside of China, so even though you’ll see plenty of China Telecom stores in China, you’ll want to stick with either China Unicom or China Mobile.

While China Mobile is the market leader in China and generally has the best nationwide coverage, China Unicom is compatible with more foreign phones, allowing them to access both 3G and 4G service. That being said, I’ve used both services and had good experiences either way, so it’s hard to go wrong!

If you’re going to purchase a SIM card in China, here are my recommendations for the best China SIM card plan for each carrier.

When visiting a China Unicom store, I’d go with the “Nationwide Data King” plan (全国流量王/ Quánguó liúliàng wáng) for 2019. Here are the details for the plan:

• 69 RMB prepaid monthly
• 10 GB of nationwide data
• 500 minutes of outgoing nationwide calls
• Incoming calls and SMS text messages are free
• Additional outgoing calls are 0.15 RMB/minute
• Additional data charges are 10 RMB/100MB and 30 RMB /1GB

Most foreign phones won’t work with China Mobile’s 3G network, so you’ll be pushed to their 4G coverage where available (2G where not available). Here are the details for their best phone plan plan for 2019:

• 88 RMB prepaid monthly
• 10 GB of nationwide data coverage.
• 50 minutes of outgoing nationwide calls.
• Incoming calls and SMS text messages are free.
• Additional outgoing calls are 0.19 RMB/minute.
• Additional data slows down to 1 mbps until you top off your card.

China Mobile Details

In general, if you’re using a foreign phone, I recommend China Unicom over China Mobile .

China Unicom is most compatible with foreign phones and you can use both 4G and 3G service. I’ve also never experienced any real problems in service in major Chinese cities and their plans are really cheap for what you get!

China Mobile ranks #1 in coverage throughout China, but since their 3G service generally isn’t compatible with phones purchased outside of China, anywhere where there isn’t 4G coverage you’ll automatically get bumped down to the painfully slow 2G service.

DISCOUNTS: As with any business, you’ll often run into special promotions or discounts being offered in-store at both China Mobile and China Unicom. Sometimes these can be really good deals if you plan to be in China for a long while, but if your need of a China SIM card is short-term, it’s best to stick with the above recommended plans.

How to Top Up China SIM Cards

It’s quite possible that you encounter a point where they use up all your phone or data credit and cannot make outgoing calls, text messages, and lose the ability to access the Internet.

There are several ways for “topping up” your China SIM card when you run out of credit.

• Top Up At a Local Store . You can visit any one of your mobile carrier’s stores and give them your phone number and cash. They will take that as a hint that you need more credit added to your China SIM card. This method always works but, depending on the line, can take quite a while to accomplish.
• Top up through Alipay or WeChat Pay . While this is arguably the easiest and fastest way, you need a local Chinese bank account or money in your Alipay/WeChat Pay wallets to top up. If you don’t have a Chinese bank account, you can always hand a Chinese friend some cash and they can top up your Chinese SIM card for you.

I personally prefer topping up using Alipay or WeChat pay.

Using a Phone in China | 6 Crucial Tips

Finally, to maximize the use of your China SIM card or if you want to consider alternatives to buying a China phone plan entirely, I’ve got 6 crucial tips for you:

• Remember that China actively censors Internet content including websites and apps like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp and many, many more blocked websites . So to share stories and photos with your friend during your journey, I’d buy a VPN before you leave to get around the Internet censors (such as ExpressVPN ), otherwise it’s much harder to do so once you arrive since the VPN websites are blocked. Thankfully, there are still ways to install a VPN from within China .
• As mentioned above, the easiest way to buy a prepaid China SIM card before you depart for China . This can easily free up an entire morning or afternoon to see other things in China instead of waiting and trying to figure out phone plans. We recommend Airalo’s China eSIM options .
• It can be easy to run out of phone credit quickly in China especially if you are consuming heavy data usage services like streaming and video chat. If you have a plan with less data than you would normally use at home, use your phone sparingly so you can avoid having to top off your phone plan multiple times.
• If all you need is Internet access and don’t see yourself needing to make any phone calls, consider instead renting or buying a global WiFi hotspot device for your trip .
• It’s no secret that the Chinese government monitors communication you send through WeChat and I for one do not like the idea of my passport tied to a China SIM card for privacy purposes. Even businesses restrict their own devices being used in China out of concerns for intellectual property theft, so I’d consider renting a phone for China during your trip. This is also a good option if your phone carrier won’t agree to unlock your phone.
• Lastly, you can always consider not dealing with the hassle of getting a China SIM card by using your own cellular provider in China. Keeping mind, though, that the international roaming charges can potentially run you a fortune. This option definitely wins for convenience, but can easily break the bank for budget travelers.

Final Thoughts | China SIM Card

As a seasoned traveler in China, I definitely think it’s worth having a local phone plan for your trip to China. Overall, I find buying one online easiest (especially a prepaid China SIM card ) and there are many ways to top off your plan should you run out of credit.

If getting a SIM card is something you truly don’t want to do, then I would settle for global WiFi as a reliable and affordable alternative for accessing the Internet.

Don’t forget to also get yourself a VPN before you leave so you can access blocked websites and apps like Facebook and Instagram. There are many good VPN providers out there, but I personally prefer ExpressVPN .

I am heading to yingkou tomorrow for two weeks. then i fly from there to xi’an for a week. back to yingkou after that; return to Panama City beach on april 16th.

This is a good read. I will be in beijing next month for a vacation. I am from the Philippines. I will be arriving Beijing by 1AM. Hey Well, unfortunately all the shops, including those in the Beijing airport that might sell SIM cards, have already closed by 1am. You only have two options: 1) pre-purchase your SIM card using the 3G Solutions link in this article or 2) wait until the morning to get a SIM card. I recommend saving time by pre-purchasing.

If you live in the U.S., get a Google fi account. I have traveled to china 6 times and get good data service (LTE) from both China Telecom and China Unicom. Data costs $10/GB and is free over $60. The phone line costs $20/month and calls are $0.20/min or free over wifi. Google gets the service through T-Mobile, but for Google it is running at full speed. The great advantage is that you can be reached through your US number and that the service works in almost every country. It used to be that you needed a Google phone, but now a lot of other phones work with it too. I personally have the original Pixel XL from 2016 and it has an amazing camera. Only $120 used on eBay.

Great questions. Getting a local phone number allows you to receive texts, which in many cases helps if you want to use WiFi around China. Otherwise, you can do fine with just data.

As for the VPN, I recommend getting your own VPN (like ExpressVPN , separate from the SIM card company.

I am not sure if this workS in china but i know it works in eUrope, mexico, and other asian COUNTRIES. I have magic jack with a usa number for our unit down south, it works with wifi or on a phone. It cost 19.95 a year. You can onlY call or text canada and usa.

Yes, there are a number of VoiP options available, but they don’t give you a Chinese phone number. You’d be surprised at how helpful this can be as you’re traveling around China.

1. Will a data only sim card able to order didi? i.e. driver won’t be able to call you or text you. yes I can read and speak chinese. 2. The 2 local plans seem to be all monthly plans? Do they have a prepaid one-time only plan? Can I buy them in the gaungzhou airport?

That’s a good point, which is why I often recommend people get a Chinese SIM card instead of using their international roaming. You need a phone number in order to use DiDi.

As for local plans, they all seem to be monthly plans. I don’t know that they do prepaid, one-time plans. And yes, there are SIM card kiosks at the Guangzhou airport 🙂

I have a China mobile SIM, on the 88rmb package. I constantly travel to China but was wondering how it works if let’s say the month finishes and I wait 15 days to recharge. Will that mean the next month of data starts when I recharge? Will I have to recharge every single month to keep using the number?

If you’re already in China, I would go to a store. If you haven’t arrived yet and you’re only traveling through China, I would pre-purchase a SIM card to make things easier.

Best China SIM Card: Everything You Need To Know

Searching for the best China SIM card for your upcoming trip? Look no further!

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in China in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards for tourists and China eSIMs plans.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in China. If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a cab, or translate Chinese – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in China .

It’s important to know that the Internet can be restricted in China. For example, some websites may be blocked or censored, and the speed of connections can sometimes be slow.

To stay connected while in China, it’s best to invest in a local SIM card (or eSIM) and use a reliable VPN to browse freely. I personally use NordVPN .

Best SIM Cards In China

If you’re traveling in China, we recommend using a SIM card from China Unicom, China Mobile, China Telecom, or Airalo.

I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Asia, you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other Asian countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In China

You can buy a China prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase an Asia prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s look at the mobile data plans offered by China Unicom, China Mobile, and China Telecom.

China Unicom SIM Cards

China Unicom offers a variety of prepaid SIM card plans. The most relevant for tourists include:

• 10 GB data, valid for 30 days, for CNY 20 ($80)
• 20 GB data, valid for 30 days, for CNY 40 ($100)
• 30 GB data, valid for 30 days, for CNY 60 ($120)

China Mobile SIM Cards

China Mobile has several plans available for inbound tourists:

• 2 GB data, valid for 30 days for USD 48
• 3 GB data, valid for 30 days for USD 80
• 18 GB data, valid for 30 days for USD 198

China Telecom SIM Cards

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the Prepaid Asia-Pacific SIM card works in more than 17 countries and gives you unlimited data for 14 days. China is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and make sure the countries you plan on visiting are listed.

If you thought the internet was free and open to everyone, think again. The Chinese government has been restricting access to websites for years, and they’re not stopping anytime soon.

For example, China blocks access to websites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Google.

Of course, there’s a way around this. If you’re looking for an unfiltered online experience in China, you can use virtual private networks (VPN).

They’re a great way to access the content you want without worrying about restriction.

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card in China or even an eSIM for your travels in China is pretty straightforward.

You’ll even be able to stay connected wherever you go in Asia without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase an Asia plan.

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in China if you wish to have data upon your arrival. This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card.

With internet access, you can easily find the best restaurants, get directions to your accommodation, book a taxi, and share photos with your family on the go.

While roaming is an option, international fees can quickly add up. Therefore, we recommend either getting an eSIM or a local sim card to access affordable local phone rates. The good news is that obtaining either option in China is incredibly simple.

To help you make the best choice, this comprehensive guide provides up-to-date pricing information and recommends the most suitable sim card for your needs.

Getting a local sim card in China can be quite difficult and time consuming, especially if you don’t speak Chinese, don’t have a Chinese ID and didn’t buy your phone in China. On top of this, they are generally very expensive for foreigners.

For these reasons I recommend Airalo’s China eSim as the best sim card in China. You can buy the eSim before you visit China and activate it on wifi at the airport without having to talk to anyone at all. Trust me, this is by far the best option.

For most travellers, the 5GB plan for $16.50 USD is perfect. Wifi can be found all over the place so even if you’re visiting for a longer trip you can usually connect to wifi. The Airalo eSim even uses the reliable China Unicom network.

If your phone isn’t compatible with eSims (by the way, most phones do support eSims, including all iPhones since 2018) then you will have no choice but to purchase a local sim card in China. In this case, I would recommend finding a China Unicom store. They have a very extensive network and offer the best options that work with phones purchased outside of China.

China Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in China costs $16.50 USD in April 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in China will cost between $5 USD and $28 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting China which includes 5GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $16.50 USD.

China Unicom, China Mobile, and China Telecom are the main sim card providers in China. China Unicom, with its nationwide coverage, offers various mobile plans and packages suitable for individuals and businesses. How to Get a Sim Card in China

Identify mobile providers: China Unicom, China Mobile and China Telecom are your best options in China.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in China

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for China at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in China then you will be in luck. All major international airports in China have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as China Unicom, China Mobile and China Telecom. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in China are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in China with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to China. The Airalo China eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

Chinese Visitor SIM Cards: Which is the Best SIM Card for China?

The most populated country in the world and home to unmatched geographic and cultural diversity, traveling to China can be daunting. The most economical way to stay connected is by finding a local SIM, but which is the Best SIM Card for China?

China has three main mobile operators

• China Unicom
• China Mobile
• China Telecom

China Mobile is the largest operator, and China Unicom is the most friendly to visitors. China Telecom is not advised.

 Where to Buy?

SIM cards are available to buy on arrival from airport vendors, but may be overpriced. You can also buy directly from provider offices, which should have english-speaking staff in major cities, and from smaller electronic stores.

Take your passport , your local address , and your unlocked mobile device .

Alternatively, order online from 3G Solutions or from SIM Easy . This has the advantage of letting you hand out your number before you leave, and on arrival let you get instantly connected incase you want to use Uber at the airport or find directions to your hotel etc.

If you plan on traveling around multiple provinces, then you need to let the staff know that this is your intention. Otherwise you may be issued with a localised SIM which will incur charges for ‘domestic roaming’ when you venture out the province! However, SIM cards are available that cover the whole of China, like our recommendation the Unicom SIM.

 Wifi Availability

Free Wifi is increasingly widespread. Cafes, hotels and bars often offer a free internet connection, as do public outdoor spaces in major cities.

The ‘Great Firewall’ of China!

Censorship in China means that the following sites and apps are blocked:

Facebook, Google, and Youtube. All Google-related tools including youtube, gmail, google maps etc. Facebook, instagram, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Snapchat, Picasa, WordPress.com, Blogspot, Blogger, Flickr, SoundCloud, Hootsuite, and more.

If you want to check if a specific website or app is blocked, use the Great Fire Wall Analyzer .

Bypassing the extensive censorship in China requires some forethought, but the most straightforward way is to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network). VPN services use encryption to bypass censorship.

If you buy a China Unicom SIM, then you can get a built-in VPN at extra cost. Otherwise, you could use a free one like the Hotspot Shield VPN Proxy app, but at the cost of advert interruptions.

Alternatively, you could become acquainted with Chinese alternative services like Baidu (China’s Google) and Wechat (China’s whatsapp and alot more besides).

Superstition

Certain numbers are generally considered lucky in China, particularly those ending in 8. The pronunciation in Mandarin of 8; ‘Ba’, sounds similar to the word ‘Fa’, which means to amass a fortune. As such it has connotations of wealth, prosperity, and success. Numbers ending in 4 however, are seen as bad.

As a discerning westerner, you can presumably bypass this! But be aware that prices reflect this perception, with more auspicious numbers commanding higher prices.

 Coverage

4G has largely superseded 3G in metropolitan areas, and 3G extends over most of the country excepting extremely rural parts like Tibet and Xinjiang. Check network coverage at your destination with Open Signal .

 Topping up

Topping up is fairly straightforward. Just go to either an official store,or a convenience store and purchase a recharge card. This will instruct you to call your network using the provided number and follow prompts, in English. with China Unicom there are also instant recharge machines, and you can top up using your Wechat wallet.

   Scams

Don’t ever buy a SIM Card off the streets in China, street newspaper shop informal vendors may sell you a SIM card without requiring a passport. However, these SIM cards may be unregistered, impossible to register, or expired. Stay safe and buy from the official shop or an official vendor. China has banned unregistered numbers in an effort to crackdown on crime, so if you purchase one of these, you will not be able to use it.

‘Best for calls and texts’

China Mobile is the largest mobile operator in the world, and uses its own type of network.

This means that it has the most extensive coverage in all provinces, but also means that it operates on a Chinese standard that may not be compatible with phones from outside China.

This means for data speeds it is alot lower, except on 4G which is in major cities. Otherwise expect EDGE speeds, which is not generally fast enough for web browsing or using VOIP services like Skype.

So which is the best for SIM Card for visitors to China?

For most users , we would recommend using China Unicom for their user-friendliness and extensive 3G and 4G.

For those who do not require data, but are likely to make alot of domestic voice calls and travel to remote areas – China Mobile is a better choice.

To call your mobile in China from abroad, callers will need to dial 0086 and then your number. 00 (International Access Code) 86 (China Country Code).

Buying a Sim Card at Shanghai Airport in 2024

Are you planning a trip to China and wondering if you can buy a sim card for traveling in China on arrival at Shanghai International Airport - PVG? The answer is yes! But is it the best way to stay connected when traveling to China? No! Let me explain…  

This is a complete guide for buying a sim card at Shanghai Airport including up to date prices as per January 2024, my recommendation and experiences, the best e-sim cards for China and everything else you need to know before buying a sim card to stay connected when traveling to Shanghai.

Plus a vlog about my arrival and buying a sim card at Shanghai Airport and a conclusion after 3 days struggling to connect to the internet. 

All the recommendations and advices in this travel blog are based on my own experiences. Traveltomtom recently traveled to Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong and tested local prepaid sim cards, VPN’s and international e-sim cards. You can read all my tips and conclusions below.

Looking for the best way to stay connected when traveling abroad is a vital part of my travel planning. Traveling with a working data connection on your phone is just so much more convenient. Imagine not being able to use Google Maps, taxi apps, social media, WhatsApp, Google, etc. then life becomes much more complicated these days.

To save money on high roaming costs you can order a sim card for traveling to China on the internet and arrive prepared or buy a China prepaid sim card at Shanghai Airport on arrival.

In most cases Traveltomtom recommends using local prepaid sim cards, especially for heavy data users. Though, China is an exception.

E-sim cards are super convenient, but also a little more expensive. However, I can already tell you that e-sim cards are the best way to stay connected when traveling to China. For several reasons.

My recommendation

Traveltomtom does NOT recommend buying a local prepaid sim card at Shanghai International Airport.

Western tourists using a local prepaid sim card from China will be struggling to use their phones like normal. Pretty much all apps you would normally use are blocked, which means with a China prepaid sim card you need a VPN.

Most people know that when traveling to China a VPN is a requirement. It would not be too much of a problem to download and instal a VPN. However, the Great Firewall of China has recently blocked the use of pretty much all big VPN’s. More about it later.

And without a VPN your local China prepaid sim card is pretty much useless!

So which sim card to use for traveling to China? Traveltomtom recommends international prepaid sim cards or an e-sim card that allows roaming in China. The Great Firewall of China allows foreign sim cards to roam like home.

The best thing about using an international prepaid sim card or an e-sim card for China is that there are no restrictions, no internet censorship and no need for a VPN!

All the above information is based on my own experiences on a recent trip to China.

In fact ordering an e-sim card for China on the internet is even cheaper than buying a sim card at Shanghai Airport, as China e-sim cards already start from just $4 USD.

As I said before the best way to use your phone in China like you normally do is by using an e-sim card. It is the easiest and the most convenient way to stay connected when traveling to China and also the cheapest way as prices start from just $4 USD.

No need to visit a sim card store anymore on arrival in China and no need to buy a sim card at Shanghai Airport. As soon as the plane lands you are already online and the best thing is that there are no restrictions, no internet censorship and no need for a VPN.

The e-sim cards for China you buy on the internet just need to be installed on your phone in a couple simple steps. Then once installed the e-sim instantly connects to an available network as soon as the plane touches the ground.

Also another reminder that the sim card shops at Shanghai Airport do NOT sell e-sim cards, only physical prepaid sim cards.

Before ordering an e-sim card for China make sure your phone is first of all unlocked. E-sim cards only work in unlocked phones. Second, make sure your phone is e-sim compatible. Pretty much all newer smartphones are e-sim card compatible.

Arrival at Shanghai International Airport PVG

Shanghai is one of the biggest and most famous cities in China and a lot of international flights arrive at Shanghai International Airport. Shanghai Airport with airport code PVG is also called Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

There is free WiFi at Shanghai PVG Airport however, it requires an sms confirmation. I tried it with several phone numbers from UAE and from Europe and never received an sms with a code. There are also WiFi machines that generate a code after swiping your passport but they are only in the Arrival Hall.

It took me a while to finally get connected to the free WiFi at Shanghai Airport, but even though you manage to connect, pretty much nothing works on your phone unless you have a working VPN. Since all my VPN’s were not working I could not do much with the WiFi.

Anyway, after you disembark the plane you follow the long hallway to immigration and foreigners are asked to do a fingerprint scan to speed up the process along the way. The fingerprint scan machine will print a QR code which you will need at immigration.

After you pass through immigration you get to the baggage claim area where there are multiple luggage belts, duty free shops, money exchange and even a place to buy a China sim card.

After you collected your luggage you pass through the last customs check where your bags gets scanned and then you walk into the Arrival Hall.

There is only one exit, so you can’t get lost. However, big chance you get overwhelmed just like me with how busy it is.

Where to buy a sim card at Shanghai Airport

For those who want to buy a local prepaid sim card for China at Shanghai Airport you can do so as I said at the luggage belts opposite luggage belt 28, see the photo above. Little English is spoken, but just enough to set you up with a China sim card even before you collect your luggage. The cheapest sim card here cost 200 Yuan which is around $28 USD.

Other places to buy a China sim card at Shanghai Airport are in the Arrival Hall when you turn right upon entering. There is counter on your right hand side that has signs of sim card and pocket wifi, the shop does not really have a name.

The ladies speak ok English, but have very little patience when you ask questions.

A third option is 20 meter further also on your right hand side in the corner of the Cheerway Easy Go convenient store. There is a sim card shop that sells China sim cards for tourists.

The sim card shops are very easy recognizable as staff will be in front of them with signs for buying a sim card and trying to attract people by loudly screaming: ‘China prepaid sim card’.

Great thing is that the sim card shops at Shanghai International Airport are open 24 hours and they accept international credit cards as well as cash. So no matter what time you arrive you can always buy a sim card at Shanghai Airport.

Prices prepaid sim cards Shanghai Airport

All the information below is updated in January 2024 and prices are in Chinese Yuan also called RMB. $1 USD = 7.1 RMB and 100 RMB = $14.12 USD. RMB is the same as the Chinese Yuan.

Expect to pay tourist prices for sim cards at Shanghai Airport. If you want the cheapest China prepaid sim card deals then you have to buy a sim card in a phone shop in Shanghai City center and not at the airport. At the airport they sell tourist sim cards for tourist prices.

However, if you don’t speak Chinese things can get really complicated in Shanghai city center. At least at Shanghai Airport the staff in the sim card shops speaks a little English, in Shanghai city center there is no guarantee you will find English speaking staff.

Anyway keep in mind that when buying a local sim card for China in Shanghai you will need a working VPN, without a VPN a local prepaid sim card is USELESS for Western tourists.

Sim card shop Luggage Belt 28

They sell 3 different China prepaid sim cards for tourists at this sim card shop.

• China Unicom: 20 GB data + 300 minutes for 30 days = 200 RMB - $28 USD
• China Telecom: 30 GB data + 500 minutes for 30 days = 300 RMB - $42 USD
• China Unicom: 40 GB data + 700 minutes for 30 days = 500 RMB - $70 USD

They only sell physical prepaid sim cards, no e-sim cards. On all sim cards 5G is supported and you can use a hotspot.

Sim card shop arrival hall

They sell 4 different China prepaid sim cards for tourists at this sim card shop.

China Mobile

• 30 GB data + 300 minutes for 30 days = 230 RMB - $32 USD
• 45 GB data + 300 minutes for 30 days = 259 RMB - $36 USD

China Unicom

• 80 GB data + 500 minutes for 30 days = 350 RMB - $49 USD
• 130 GB data + 600 minutes for 60 days = 500 RMB - $70 USD

Cheerway Easy Go

In the corner of Cheerway Easy Go convenient store there is a so called Airport Business Hall sim card shop with a sign from China Unicom. It says China Unicom everywhere but they also sell China Mobile sim cards.

• 20 GB data + 80 minutes for 30 days = 150 RMB - $21 USD
• 30 GB data + 200 minutes for 30 days = 200 RMB - $28 USD
• 40 GB data + 500 minutes for 30 days = 250 RMB - $35 USD
• 100 GB data + 700 minutes for 60 days = 500 RMB - $70 USD 

All the above tourist sim cards for China are only available as physical prepaid sim cards. E-sim cards are NOT available at all at Shanghai International Airport.

Best sim card for tourists at Shanghai Airport

For those that are willing to take a leap of faith and buy a local sim card for traveling in China at Shanghai Airport it is a fairly easy conclusion that the China Mobile sim card from the Cheerway Easy Go convenient store is the best buy.

For $21 USD you get 20 GB data and 80 minutes. Although I am not recommending to buy a sim card at Shanghai Airport but to use an international prepaid sim card or an e-sim card for China, I also bought the exact same China Mobile sim card on my arrival.

Why? Because I was in the understanding I could survive with a VPN and at that time I did not know about that the Airalo and Nomad e-sim cards had no internet restrictions at all.

Using a VPN in China

There are much more detailed articles on the internet about using VPN’s when traveling to China, but I can keep it very simple and clear. All the websites telling you to use either Nord VPN, Express VPN or SurfShark VPN I can tell you that at the moment none of them work.

I literally spent almost $40 USD in subscriptions to make them work, but without success. All of them are momentarily blocked by the Great Firewall of China. It made my China Mobile sim card pretty useless.

In the end my Chinese friends helped me download LetsVPN and Shadowrocket. These two VPN’s worked quite ok, but the data speed is at times very slow and I personally have no patience for slow internet. Also on both VPN’s TikTok is still blocked!

My experiences buying a sim card in Shanghai

At the Shanghai Airport it was a fairly easy decision which sim card to buy as the China Mobile sim card was by far the cheapest and best tourist sim card available. 

As soon as the staff made it work for me, I was shocked how little was actually working. No Google or Safari, how was I even looking up things. Trying to make my VPN’s run on my phone was also not a success and therefore in the taxi to my hotel I was already pretty disappointed with my China Mobile sim card.

The WiFi in the hotel was not helping much either as everything is still blocked. Luckily my Chinese friends instantly installed two VPN’s on my phone that actually worked after I already spent almost $40 USD on VPN subscriptions that were not even working.

Data speed with the VPN’s was sometimes so slow that I started looking for other way to get data on my phone. It took me more than 2 days to figure out that ordering an e-sim card on the internet was the ultimate solution for staying connected for when traveling to China.

Having an internet connection is so helpful when visiting many countries around the world. But in China, it is pretty much essential.

With a complicated language and different alphabet to many western countries, translation apps are so helpful here.

Getting around can be a lot harder too, so navigation apps will make your life so much easier!

Your current sim may or may not work. But even if it does, it may abruptly cut off due to network issues, plus expensive overseas data packages can really put a dent in your budget.

A China sim is the best way to ensure you stay covered, avoid astronomical roaming fees, and are able to keep using social media (more on that later).

Buying a Sim Card For China – Things To Consider

There are a lot of different options when it comes to buying a sim card. And of course, everyone is different. Consider these options when buying a sim card for China;

Obviously, price is a hugely important factor when buying a sim card for any country. You want to save money by not using your current provider. 

But the cheapest deal isn’t always the best option. You need to decide what package is right for you. 

Always check all of the details when buying a sim card. Many don’t allow hotspotting, so make sure you only plan to use one device and budget accordingly.

Check how much any top-ups will cost too, are they still affordable if you need to buy extra data while you’re away?

With messaging apps like WhatsApp (or WeChat in China) , texts and minutes no longer really matter. It’s the data we care about.

Pay close attention to the amount of data you get included with your sim card.

A great way to budget how much data you will use is by checking your current contract. Log into your online account and find out your daily usage.

Traveling will of course mean extra searches, more time on maps, and downloading entertainment for long flights. 

Often you will use up to twice as much data abroad, so make sure to account for this when thinking about a new prepaid sim.

And double check the top-up rate is just as good as the initial offer. Sometimes local sim providers will rely on you being in a rush at the airport and not checking these important details.

China is a vast country . Although it’s sped ahead with technological developments, some areas still have poor network coverage.

It often depends on the network provider and can vary area to area. Do some research into the place you are visiting.

Does this network have good coverage? Would you be better off with someone else?

China Unicom is one of the biggest network providers throughout Asia so it is a pretty safe bet. 

By researching all of this before you go you will avoid picking up a sim at the airport that might not work on your phone or may have spotty coverage.

After all, what good is a sim if it doesn’t actually connect to the internet?!

Bureaucracy

Of course, China is covered in red tape. You will know this just from trying to get a visa to visit the country. 

The Chinese government requires your full name (as per passport details) to activate any sim card. 

When buying a prepaid China sim card, the company may require you to send in a photocopy of your passport. 

If you purchase a sim card within China, you will have to provide biometric data such as a face scan and fingerprints in addition to your passport.

If you prefer more privacy, it may be best to buy a sim card online from an international provider before you travel.

Many travel sims have an expiry date and will not work at all, even if they still have credit. 

This is no different in China, phone providers will even cancel unused sim cards after a certain amount of time (usually 30 to 60 days). 

So make sure not to buy your sim too far ahead of time; or get one of the eSims, recommended below, that you can simply activate on arrival.

Will you be returning to China? Do you know what date you are leaving? All of these may have an impact on which sim card is best for you.

Where To Buy a Sim Card For China

You can buy a sim card for China in a few different ways. But there are certain things to be aware of if buying locally. 

The three major mobile operators in China are China Telecom, China Unicom, and China Mobile. 

But, China Telecom sim cards don’t work with phones purchased outside of China! So make sure to only look at one of the other two. More on that below.

By far the easiest way to get online in China is by purchasing an eSim online before you travel. You don’t have to struggle without data trying to find a sim card retailer, simply activate it on arrival.

It’s not always the cheapest option, but you are going to save a lot of time trying to find a sim and working out the various packages on the ground.

An eSim is just like a normal sim but without a physical product. You just download it onto your phone and it gives you access to your new data plan. 

The only downside is that not all phones are compatible. Before purchasing, make sure that your device is eSIM-compatible and that your phone is unlocked.

In The Airport

You can buy a sim card when you arrive in China at Beijing airport or Shanghai airport. This is an easy option and means you can get connected straight away without having to find a local phone shop.

Most of the airport staff should be able to speak English and can help you get set up. But there isn’t much choice available and plans are at a premium here due to the convenient location.

Also consider what time you will be arriving at the airport. The sim card vendors often hang around just before you get to the taxi ranks in arrivals, but many won’t be working in the middle of the night.

Local phone stores are usually the cheapest place to get a local sim card for the country you are visiting. But there are still things you need to be careful with.

Although China Mobile has the best coverage throughout China, their 3G service usually isn’t compatible with phones purchased outside of China. 

This makes it incredibly inconvenient as outside of the cities with 4G coverage you’ll only have access to the very slow 2G service.

China Unicom is the most compatible with foreign phones. For 69 RMB you can get 10 GB of nationwide data and 500 minutes of outgoing nationwide calls (valid for 30 days).

Of course, there’s also the fact that you will have to translate the deals if buying in person. In many touristy areas, there may be signs in English, but it can be hit and miss and depends on where you are. 

There are also many ID requirements, as previously mentioned, so make sure to have all of your documents with you when buying a sim at a store in China.

A note of privacy and getting a VPN

If you want to stay connected and have unrestricted access you will need to buy a VPN before you travel to China. Once you’re in China it’s too late as VPN sites are also blocked for obvious reasons.

It’s a well-known fact that the Chinese government actively censors internet content.  This includes blocking a lot of social media sites and apps like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and WhatsApp.
