Breath-Taking Panoramic Views

An unmissable Christchurch experience, the Gondola offers stunning panoramic views of the city, Lyttelton Harbour, and beyond. Another one of the best things to do in Christchurch. Gaze at the snow-capped Southern Alps, sprawling Canterbury Plains and the sparkling waters of Pegasus Bay and the Pacific Ocean. A great family-friendly spot to explore.

The summit station offers plenty to entertain: explore the many walking tracks, learn about the history of the area on the Christchurch Discovery Ride, and indulge in a spot of shopping at our well-priced gift shop. Sit back and take in the fantastic views with a drink, snack, or meal from the licensed Red Rock Café.

Please note that the Christchurch Gondola will be closed 27-31 May 2024 inclusive for scheduled annual maintenance. We apologise for any inconvenience this causes.

More about the Christchurch Gondola

Our 4-seat cabins are allocated per group to ensure exclusivity for your Gondola ride, and the changing weather and seasons mean a different view every time you visit. For frequent visitors we recommend our great-value Tram & Gondola Annual Pass – perfect for locals! Please note our cafe and Christchurch Discovery Ride close at 4:30pm.

The Base Station of the Gondola is nestled in Heathcote Valley where you will find plenty of parking for cars and coaches. The Summit Station – including the Red Rock Cafe, Christchurch Discovery Ride and gift shop – is at the top of Mt Cavendish. The Gondola trip up to the summit takes approximately 10 minutes, and we can stop the ride for guests requiring assistance, including wheelchairs (up to a maximum of 600mm in width). The cableway spans 862 horizontal metres and our Gondola cabins are very stable and comfortable, offering spectacular views in all directions.

Keen to learn more about the sights you’ll see? Visit our Scan & Learn site by scanning the QR codes around the Summit Station to learn more about the landmarks you’ll spot from the Gondola!

Getting here

Pre-Booked Tours

Passengers who have pre-booked independent tours (this is all activities not booked directly with the onboard shorex team) departing Lyttelton can shuttle to Norwich Quay in Lyttelton to meet their tours or private transfers.

Christchurch Gondola and City Center from Lyttelton

Cool Cruiser

I will be on the Celebrity Edge in February stopping at Lyttelton, and I've been reading some conflicting information about transport and shuttles there. My understanding is that there will be a free shuttle to Lyttelton, and paid shuttles from the cruise terminal to Christchurch.  The local authorities are strongly discouraging cruise ship passengers from using the local buses because they swamped the capacity of the bus system last season which was bad for the locals.  But I have not found a good way to visit both the gondola and Christchurch city center without using the local bus.  The ship's excursion to the gondola is a round-trip shuttle so it doesn't go into Christchurch, plus it's expensive.  There is a shuttle that goes from Christchurch to the gondola and back, but it only runs once per hour and it wastes time and money since I have to pay for one shuttle from Lyttelton to Christchurch and a second from Christchurch back out to the gondola and then back to Christchurch, and the gondola is far closer to Lyttelton than to Christchurch.  Does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative besides taking the public bus?  Thanks!

Perhaps a taxi or Uber?

Taxi will be more expensive than we want to pay.  Not sure about using Uber; I will need to get a local SIM card and set up that phone number in my Uber account which is currently based on my U.S. phone number that won't work in NZ or Australia.

If you have a set budget you may have to choose to do one or the other.

We were there on Christmas Eve with Viking which has only 930 passengers.  The port is a very small town.  A shuttle is required to get from the ship to the town which is close.  Suttles were provided free of charge  to both town and Christchurch from the ship.

I don't know if Viking paid for the shuttle into Christchurch or not.  I think it might have been the greater Christchurch Chamber of Commerce or Tourism Bureau.  I think it is provided locally to both boost visitors to the CBD and not inundate the small town.  The trip into the City isn't long, perhaps 15 minutes

Oh harden up! Ubers are cheap - particularly when you're coming over with $USD! lol! If you're not going to spend the money on excursions.. why come?  🤣

You can get the free shuttle into Lyttleton and then a short uber over the hill to the Gondola (it's basically right above the port - I've walked from Lyttleton to the top of the Gondola before).

If you want to see the city centre and do the Gondola. Get the cruise ship provided bus to the city centre. Then get a one-way uber to the Gondola - it's cheap. If you're then enjoying your day and wanting to penny-pinch.. walk down from the top of the Gondola into Lyttleton Port and get the free shuttle back to the ship.

Haha

Your post made me laugh.  Thanks for the info about the Gondola and city centre.  I have only done a drive through the city on a recent cruise excursion, so I hope to see a bit more this time around.

Haha. I hope you enjoy your trip. If you get off in the city.. I recommend doing the Punting down the Avon and the Tram (it's not a long loop.. but has been recently extended) as both are great fun, close-by and fair value. Actually, there's a discount package involving the Punting, the Tram and the Gondola. If you do the Gondola - make sure you do the discovery ride at the top - it's included in the cost I think and is excellent.

Thanks

Jamietravelstheworld

I was just in Christchurch, and while there the NCL Spirit was in Lyttleton. I took an Uber from Christchurch to the Gondola, I think it was US $16, and no tipping in NZ. I took the #8 bus from the gondola back to Christchurch, $4 NZ (so about $3 US), and it wasn't crowded at all and took about 20 minutes, if that.

BTW, someone else mentioned the punting. It was okay, but I don't know if I'd spend the money and take the time. The tram was nicer. But if you do the punting, you absolutely have to pre-reserve a time, it was fully booked the day I did it.

Christchurch Gondola for Panoramic Views and Hiking

A View from the top of the Christchurch gondola on Mount Cavendish in New Zealand

Rising above the city, a ride on the Christchurch Gondola offers picturesque aerial views of the Banks Peninsula, Lyttleton Harbour, the Southern Alps (on a clear day), and the Canterbury Plains.

Once at the top of Mount Cavendish, there is more to do than we had realised when we began our ascent. Often called cable cars, the Christchurch Gondola ride itself is only a part of the adventure.

While the ever-changing views are dramatic in their own right, there is no question that the real magic happens at the top.

Here, we enjoyed both indoor and outdoor 360-degree panoramic views, learned a bit of the region’s history, hiked, shopped, and finally relaxed with what is close to the best coffee in Christchurch.

As American expats who have been living in and exploring NZ for over 20 years, we see things from both a local’s perspective and from that of a visitor. Therefore, we understand what it’s like to come here and have things be similar, but not always exactly what we are used to. We share the information on this page from this perspective.

Our experience on the Christchurch Gondola cable cars

It takes about 10 minutes to travel the distance of nearly a kilometre from the base to the Summit Station on the crater rim of Lyttleton Volcano on Mount Cavendish in the Port Hills.

Through the 360° windows of the fully enclosed cable car, we enjoyed sweeping views of the landscape below.

Some of the side windows open, allowing for better photos. There are 19 cars that each seat four people (although we saw one car with additional smaller children).

We took a photo of the view while looking up at the cable car in front of ours and more shots looking back towards the gondola base while on our way up to the top. We even noticed a broken road safety rail from a prior rock slide.

Gondola in Christchurch New Zealand

Views from Mount Cavendish

The Summit Station offers both indoor and outdoor viewing platforms on multiple levels of the building. In this case, a picture is worth a thousand words. Note that our favourite view from the top is at the head of this page.

On a deck at the top of Mount Cavendish in New Zealand

Hiking on the Crater Rim

Just outside the door, we can truly enjoy nature. Our mistake was going up towards the end of the day, as we planned to take the cable car in both directions. Note that the last Gondola heads up at 4 pm.

Before heading out on a longer hike, check the Port Hills track information provided by the city council. The main hiking trails are nearly all part of the full Crater Rim Trail and include:

  • Cavendish Bluff Lookout (30-minute return walk)
  • Pioneer Women’s Memorial (50-minute return walk)
  • Crater Rim Trail (3-4 hour return walk)
  • Bridal Path (1 hour easy, but steep track from the Summit Station back to the base)

Here are a few images from our abridged Crater Rim trail walk. Most look out towards the Banks Peninsula.

Heading to the crater rim trail of Mount Cavendish in the Port Hills above Christchurch New Zealand

More to do at the top of the Christchurch Gondola ride

Travel through the Time Tunnel

This seven-minute automated ride takes you on a journey to explore the region’s natural and human history. The amusement park-style cars, while very gentle, seem to be a big thrill for children. The ride through the Time Tunnel is included with your gondola ticket.

Relax at the Red Rock Cafe

Undoubtedly the best view in Christchurch, the Red Rock Cafe is a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a coffee, snack, or even a light meal.

  • Souvenir shop at the top.
  • There is also a Tramway Restaurant that was closed when we were there.

Things to know before you ride the Christchurch Gondola

  • It is often windy at the top. It is a good idea to bring a light jacket.
  • The gondola opens daily at 10 am (closed Christmas day), with the final cable car heading up at 4 pm, although it stays open later in parts of summer.
  • The base (entrance) is at 10 Bridle Path Rd in the Heathcote Valley, an easy 15-minute drive from central Christchurch.
  • There is a self-pay shuttle from the city, or you can take the number 28 bus.

Save money with a Christchurch Pass

Depending on your plans, the Christchurch Pass may be the perfect deal for you. It includes three Christchurch activities: Check prices and availability of the Christchurch Pass

  • A punting along the Avon River ( see our review )
  • Christchurch Gondola ride
  • And a day pass on Christchurch’s historic tram

Wonderful news. 🙂

January 11, 2018 at 11:32 am

That is so beautiful. Normally I wouldn’t want to go somewhere that is really high up there, I’m afraid of heights. But I would brace myself to go up there to see the beauty.

January 11, 2018 at 10:39 pm

The cable cars are fully enclosed, so not at all scary. And the views could all be enjoyed from indoors if you were feeling nervous. But the decks and rails are very secure, so you would be fine.

January 11, 2018 at 6:36 am

Wow, what an amazing view to end a hike with! Reminds me of when I went to Peru. The hike was long but the view afterward was so beautiful.

January 11, 2018 at 10:38 pm

We didn’t do the entire hike as we went up too late in the day, so for us, it wasn’t too long of a hike.

January 11, 2018 at 5:59 am

Stunning, stunning, stunning! I am not a huge fan of heights but I would do this for those incredible views. And I would be so disappointed if the Red Rock Cafe was closed when I was there. Ultimate views.

January 11, 2018 at 10:35 pm

The Red Rock Cafe was open, it was the restaurant on a lower level that was closed. Sorry for the confusion.

The views are amazing Rhonda. I love the shade of water too; reminds me a little bit of Fiji, as the geography looks a wee bit similar in your part of the world.

January 9, 2018 at 4:12 pm

There are so many spots on the South Island with this stunning turquoise water. I love it too. As for Fiji, I haven’t been for a while. We may head there later this year, it’s on the short list.

It offers the visitor spectacular scenery, a fascinating Maori and European history and an abundance of recreational opportunities. you can experience Lyttelton harbor for yourself by driving the short distance through the Lyttelton Road Tunnel or over the Port Hills.

Lyttelton harbor is the northern major sea inlet on Banks Peninsula, the one prominent feature on the coast of Canterbury, New Zealand. Banks Peninsula was once a volcanic island and Lyttelton harbor the sea-filled crater of a volcano that erupted 11 million years ago.

In the middle of the harbor lie three fascinating islands - Quail, Ripapa and King Billy

South Island's leading port, is connected to Christchurch by road and rail tunnels. Wooden houses cling to steep streets above the harbor, bustling with cargo vessels, freighters, sailing yachts and sightseeing launches. Several 19th-century churches add to the town's historic attractions. The Canterbury pilgrims, who arrived in four shiploads at Lyttelton in 1850, made a historic trek across the Port Hills to establish Christchurch. Today, walkers still enjoy the old Bridle Path trail. Hundreds of modern-day pilgrims make the nostalgic hike between Lyttelton and Christchurch annually on the Sunday nearest December 16.

Christchurch is South Island's premier city and lies about 20 minutes by car north of Lyttelton. Often described as "the most English city outside England," the busy capital of the province of Canterbury is known for its relaxed ambiance and unhurried pace. Its English character is very much evident in the fine neo-Gothic stone buildings such as the Arts center, the Canterbury Museum and the Christ Church Cathedral. The latter is the city's dominating landmark, serving as a reminder of the important role the Church of England played in the settlement of this part of New Zealand. Locally, Christchurch is known as the "Garden City" for its numerous parks and gardens. The Botanic Gardens are among the finest in New Zealand, its formal flower beds ablaze with color from spring through autumn. Shaded by overhanging trees, the Avon River meanders through the city, adding a further note of old-world charm.

Canterbury Museum Regarded as one of the finest museums in the Southern Hemisphere, the museum is a treasure house of Canterbury and New Zealand lore. Its main attractions include a replica Christchurch street typical of colonial days, and a Hall of Antarctic Discovery containing a fascinating collection of articles used by Antarctic explorers. The Pacific Hall displays exhibits detailing the three voyages of Captain Cook, as well as mementos collected during his travels. Canterbury museum is due to close to be refurbished shortly, will be closed 5 years but a smaller "pop-up" is planned.

Shopping and Food

Shopping in Lyttelton is rather limited, but Christchurch offers plenty of shopping opportunities. Main shopping for central city located along the river and Cashel Mall, not far from Cathedral Square. Shuttles are dropping passengers on Cashel street so straight ahead to the new rebuilt areas. Port Lyttelton is the cruise port serving Christchurch - the largest city on New Zealand's South Island. The seaport is located to the southeast of the city. Christchurch has population around 375,000, ranking it NZ's 3rd largest urban area - after Auckland and Wellington .

Lyttelton (cruise port to Christchurch) is a port town located on the eastern coast of South Island (New Zealand). The cruise port Lyttelton Harbour is at Banks Peninsula's northwestern end. The distance from Lyttelton to Christchurch is approx 12 km (7,5 mi) - to the northwest. The town covers a total area of approx 15 km2 (5,6 mi2) and has population around 3,000 (including the neighbouring Cass Bay, Corsair Bay, and Rapaki.

Lyttelton Harbour and Akaroa Harbour are the two major inlets of Banks Peninsula (Canterbury, NZ). The harbor has length approx 15 km (9,3 mi) from its mouth to Teddington. Like Akaroa Harbour, Lyttelton is the caldera of an extinct volcano,

Lyttelton is linked with Christchurch by 1-track rail tunnel (1867-opened), also by 2-lane road tunnel (1964-opened) and 2 roads. Near Lyttelton Harbour's head is located Quail Island (nature reserve), and to the south is Ripapa Island.

Christchurch

Christchurch NZ is the seat of Canterbury Region. The urban area is on the eastern coast of South Island NZ, and north of Banks Peninsula. The city was named on March 27, 1848. On July 31, 1856, it received the city status (declared by Royal Charter), officially making it the oldest established city in NZ.

Avon River flows through downtown. An urban park is situated along the river banks. the city is distinctively English, with various European elements and featuring Gothic Revival architecture. As New Zealand's early settlers, Maori culture is also widespread. The town has a lot of public spaces, cafes, bars and restaurants in the centre and also in the surrounding suburbs.

The large number of parks and residential gardens has given Christchurch the name "The Garden City". Hagley Park and Christchurch Botanic Gardens are in the central part. Hagley Park serves as a site for sporting events, including golf, netball, rugby, cricket, as well as for open-air live concerts performed by local orchestras and bands.

To the north is Willowbank (wildlife park). An ecological restoration program to create a wetland (Travis Wetland) is to the east of downtown (in the Burwood suburb).

Port Lyttelton

Lyttelton is the main seaport of Canterbury (Christchurch) area since 1877. During the 1970s, Lyttelton was one of South Island's main ports upgraded for containerization. Its container terminal was inaugurated in 1977. Most of South Island's coal cargo is shipped from Lyttelton. The port also has a petroleum storage terminal and large container / bulk cargo terminal.

Port Lyttelton has been historically regarded as "Gateway to Canterbury" by its colonial settlers. The port is a regular travel destination for NZ cruise ships. It is South Island's principal cargo port (goods transport terminal) handling around 61% of all imports and 34% of all exports by value.

In 2009, NZHPT (New Zealand Historic Places Trust) gave Lyttelton the status "Category I Historic Area". Lyttelton is the biggest settlement on Lyttelton Harbour. The harbor waterway is an inlet on Banks Peninsula's northwestern side. The town is on Port Hills' lower slopes that separate it from Christchurch City. A road tunnel through Port Hills links Lyttelton with Christchurch (to the northwest). Sumner Town is approx 6 km (3,7 mi) to the northeast and is accessed through Evans Pass. Governors Bay is approx 10 km (6,2 mi) to the west.

Much of Lyttelton's architectural heritage was lost in the 2010-2011 earthquakes. Damages were considered too extensive for reconstruction. Town's oldest churches have also collapsed, among which was the Holy Trinity Avonside.

Following the earthquakes, for several years cruise ships instead of in Lyttelton docked in Akaroa. Regularly scheduled ferries link Lyttelton with Diamond Harbour (on the harbour's southern coast). The uninhabited Quail Island is southwest of Lyttelton.

In June 2018 started construction works on Port Lyttelton's new cruise berth (completed in November 2020). The USD 67 million facility is located between Inner Harbour's entrance and Cashin Quay. It became NZ's first custom-built cruise berth with capacity to handle world's largest passenger ships . The new berth is designed to withstand earthquakes and waves generated from storms and northwest winds typical for the region. The Terminal's existing berth is still used by smaller-sized vessels. On November 16, at the new berth docked MS Professor Khromov (fka Spirit of Enderby) . The operated under charter Russian ice-strengthened ship departed from Vladivostok Russia carrying only crew (22 Russians) who remained in isolation onboard for 43 days total. Professor Khromov then continued to Invercargill (NZ's southernmost and westernmost city) to pick up its first cruisers for the voyage to Stewart Island/Oban and Fiordland NP .

For season 2019, the cruise port had scheduled 19 ship calls.

Lyttelton-Christchurch cruise terminal

Cruise ships to Christchurch NZ dock in Lyttelton Harbour (at port's Inner harbor). The pier is located at short walking distance from downtown. Lyttelton Port Authority provides complimentary shuttle bus service between the cruise terminal and the tourist info center in downtown Lyttelton. The port has 2 dedicated cruise berths and capacity to dock two liners simultaneously.

Most cruise companies offer complimentary shuttle buses to Christchurch City's center. From Lyttelton, cruise passengers can also take public Bus Route 28 (Papanui-Lyttelton-Rapaki) to Christchurch. Bus travel time is approx 30 min.

New Lyttelton cruise ship pier

On May 1, 2017, Lyttelton Port Company announced its plans to construct a new cruise ship pier (berthing / docking facility) in Lyttelton. The completed in 2020 facility is Christchurch's first purposely-built cruise ship dock with capacity to accommodate the world's biggest cruise liners . The new cruise berth is designed to accommodate vessels even of the RCI's Oasis-class - LOA length 362 m, weight 225,282 GT tons, capacity over 5400 passengers plus 2400 crew.

Previously, as Port Lyttelton was unable to handle large cruise vessels, they docked in Akaroa instead. Construction works were initially scheduled for completion by 2019 but the project was extended through November 2020.

NZ's cruise industry has worth of around AUD 490 million to the country's economy (season 2016–2017 statistics).
