Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How do I get to Christchurch?

Christchurch is located on the South Island of New Zealand so travelling to this picturesque city largely depends on where you're coming from.

If you're located in the surrounding regions or other close-by cities then the easiest way to get to Christchurch would be to drive.

If you're travelling from other parts of the South Island that are further away such as Queenstown, or if you're travelling from destinations in the North Island, catching a flight to Christchurch Airport would be the quickest and most convenient way. 

Getting around Christchurch

Christchurch is considered a very easy place to get around, with a number of different transportation options.

Christchurch's public transportation system is quite effective, with two bus networks designed to take you to the major landmarks and suburbs within the city.

Alternatively, you can also easily catch a taxi or rent a car for longer day trips to surrounding regions. 

What is the weather like in Christchurch?

Christchurch enjoys a temperature climate with fairly even and dry temperatures. Due to Christchurch's location to the equator, summer isn't very hot and it's unlikely to see extreme heat during the season.

On the other hand, winters are quite cold in Christchurch with freezes often happening overnight. Despite Christchurch's tendency for cooler weather, the city still enjoys 2,100 hours of sunlight a year. 

What do I pack for a trip to Christchurch?

What to pack for Christchurch largely depends on what time of the year you're travelling in. Due to Christchurch's fairly temperate and dry climate and cooler temperatures, it's a good idea to pack a jumper and some wet weather clothes no matter the season.

If you're travelling in Winter or Autumn you should pack appropriate Winter clothes such as pants, thicker shirts, and socks, as well as scarves, beanies, and gloves. While the temperature never gets too hot in Summer, you can still pack t-shirts, shorts, dresses, and hats. 

Is Christchurch safe?

Christchurch is considered to be a fairly safe city as it has a low level of crime, however various crimes can still happen so it's best to stick to well-populated areas. It's also a good idea to avoid places or situations that make you feel uncomfortable, especially if you're travelling alone or moving around at night.

New Zealand is also located on a fault line so theoretically minor shakes and larger earthquakes can happen at any moment so it's always best to be prepared.

Christchurch is the most english city in the world outside of the United Kingdom, it has a rich anglican history and home to just under 1300 parks, gardens, reserves and green spaces allowing the city to be known as "The Garden City". The city's population is just under 500,000 which includes a large population in the green belt / hinterland of the city. 

The 2010 and 2011 earthquakes devastated the city and many surrounding centres across the South Island. As heartbreaking as these series of events were it has given Christchurch a golden opportunity to rebuild a new city, a new atmosphere and a safe, strong and modern city centre. 

Our tour showcases the best of Christchurch and its favourite activities all in a single day. 

What to expect

We start by collecting you from your accommodation in Christchurch or from Lyttelton if you are arriving off a cruise ship or even at Christchurch Airport (charges may apply) before a punt on the River Avon. This is a wonderful relaxing way to take in the local sights. We will take you to connect with the historic Christchurch Tramways for a ride around the city loop to High Street where we will pop into Little High Eatery for a food tasting. Here you will be able to taste a variety of different foods under the one roof. After the tasting we will go for a drive beyond the central city to New Brighton, Sumner and other places of interest for a good tour of the city. We will make our way over the hills to Lyttleton before heading back into the city via a stop at the Christchurch Gondola for a ride to the top of the hill, taking in the stunning views of Christchurch City and Banks Peninsula. We change the tour around on a day to day basis if the weather isn't on our side.

Awesome tour of the south. Got to see some amazing places with some amazing people. The southern part of the tour was epic every single day. The only drawback was that the northern part of south (second week for me) was a bit light on the activity front.

The accommodation was very central & clean, the included greenstone carving was a highlight and our Guide went above and beyond to ensure each guest made the most of it. We were able to make many stops between each destination to capture the beautiful scenery and our Guide recommend all the best local spots for iconic kiwi meals. Would definitely recommend this tour to anyone looking for a budget friendly tour!

One of the best experiences of my life, made possible by the incredibly talented and charismatic Daisy! This was well organized with all of the logistics taken care of for you while having the freedom to pick what activities interest you most. The group setting was fun and a nice bonding expensive of people from around the world. Some of the hostel stays were great, some were just ok, but all were clean and had the essentials.

Overall is good. The issue is that it was advertised for ages between 12+ to 99. This age group is definitely too broad. My husband and I are in our 70's, but the rest of the group (14) were between 30-50. Although we are outdoor individuals who can hike and cycle for several hours, we were definitely slower than our younger companions. Our interests during these activities re. history/fauna etc... were also not that of the other travelers. Our guide was caught between the needs to ensure safety of 2 separate groups which we felt was unfair to him. Otherwise, itinerary, guide's knowledge and organization were very good.

I thoroughly enjoyed my tour. The guide, Isobel, paid very good attention to details and the comfort of her tourists.I felt safe and secure in the bus as Mark's driving was very competent and Isobel was delightful, patient and full of fun, a real people person.She and Mark worked well together, meal times, departure times and other important information was provided well in advance. Good provision was made for frequent stops to allow for toilet breaks and the purchase of refreshments. I liked their attention to time keeping. For me, everything worked smoothly which made the tour relaxed and stress free. I would highly recommend Isobel and Mark.

Ben and Daisy were fantastic tour guides. If you like smaller groups, then this is definitely the best way to explore the south island while making friends along the way

A beautiful sunny day to see whales "I had a great experience on this tour. I was picked up at my hotel and we headed to Kaikoura. Our guide showed us the sights as we drove to Kaikoura. We had a small group which was nice as we got to chat. The whale watch was wonderful. We saw a sperm whale right away. Then shortly after we saw another! I would take this tour again."

Well worth it! "My first time to NZ and I couldn't have started it better. Booked our tickets from Australia, before we left, and arranged for pick up at Methven Information Centre. Bus arrived promptly on time. We were greeted by Hammond, who was our driver for the day. He was a font of knowledge, having worked in the sound industry and also with Peter Jackson on the LOTR movies. Hammond knew this locality and the weather and warned us that the wind builds up where we will be going. Everything was great about this tour! The tour guide, the added props, the light lunch afterwards and even the morning coffee break at the Staveley Store. Highly recommended, you won't forget it!"

Lunch was plentiful and delicious, the tour was very well organised and Kris couldn't help us enough to share information until the last minute when the tour finished. It was almost perfect, the only thing missing from this tour was Sir Peter Jackson himself.... :)"

LYTTELTON TUG

Welcome to the Tug Lyttelton Christchurch New Zealands oldest Steam Boat

Throughout the summer season, usually from Christmas to April or May, the Society operates a Sunday afternoon harbour cruise to the Lyttelton Heads.

The vessel departs from No. 2 Wharf at 2:30 p.m. and returns to her berth at4.00 p.m.

During the cruise passengers are able to view the workings of a steam ship that is over 100 years old, along with visiting bays with historical significance in the Canterbury region.

The souvenir shop and kiosk are open during the cruise.

Elon Musk slammed Australia’s prime minister on Tuesday after a court ordered his social media company X to remove footage of a terror attack against a Sydney cleric — arguing the decision could effectively allow one country to control “the entire internet.”

Musk has come under fire from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and government officials for not deleting the video showing a teenager stab a priest and two others last week.

X had geo-blocked the footage from its Australian users but did not delete the clip from its servers .

Australia’s e-Safety Commissioner argued the content should be taken down since it showed explicit violence.

“Does the PM think he should have jurisdiction over all of Earth?” Musk wrote on X.

The billionaire, who bought X in 2022 with a declared mission to save free speech, posted a meme on the platform that showed X stood for “free speech and truth” while other social media platforms represented “censorship and propaganda.”

Albanese hit back at Musk, saying the country would “do what’s necessary to take on this arrogant billionaire who thinks he’s above the law, but also above common decency.”

“The idea that someone would go to court for the right to put up violent content on a platform shows how out-of-touch Mr Musk is,” Albanese told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

X did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A spokesperson for e-Safety, Australia’s internet regulator which was created in the wake of the Christchurch mass shooting in 2019, said the takedown notice was for the attack footage only, and not for “commentary, public debate or other posts about this event, even those which may link to extreme violent content.”

“While it may be difficult to eradicate damaging content from the internet entirely … eSafety requires platforms to do everything practical and reasonable to minimize the harm it may cause to Australians and the Australian community,” the spokesperson added, in a statement.

Although Musk wrote in another post that X had “blocked the content in question for Australian IP addresses”, the video could be seen on the platform by a Reuters journalist in Australia.

A far-right senator also reposted the video on his X account.

On Tuesday, Facebook and Instagram owner Meta said it had used “internal tools” to detect and block copies of videos of the church attack and an unrelated, deadly stabbing at a shopping mall in Sydney two days earlier.

Meta said it was removing posts containing “any glorification or praise” of the incidents.

This is the second government Musk’s site has clashed with in the last three weeks.

Earlier this month, a supreme court judge in Brazil ordered X to block certain accounts, though Musk’s site initially refused to comply.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes has given X until Friday to explain why it allegedly did not fully comply with earlier rulings ordering the company to block the accounts.
