• johnjT7651UP 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Lovely place in Zona Colonial. The three, actually 4, 'eyes' were beautiful to see and well worth a visit. The actual entrance to the place is quite inexpensive- the cost increases sharply when you hire a guide. We did- his name was Juan Carlos and he was lovely. Good fun and very informative. I'd have given 5 stars if it weren't for the pushiness of the person trying to sell souvenirs at the end of the tour. I know they're trying to make a living and I sympathise but it marred the experience a little. Arrival in Mexico City

City Tour & Anthropological Museum

You will be picked up from your hotel in Mexico City and taken on a city tour. You will first explore the historical center on foot and visit the huge Zocalo with its famous Cathedral and the Government Palace with its impressive murals by Diego Riviera , amongst others. To make the city tour perfect, it finishes with an informative visit of the Anthropological Museum which is situated on the brink of the Chapultepec Park . Learn all about the history and culture of Mexico´s many pre-hispanic civilizations. Afterwards, you are brought back to your hotel and can discover the metropolitan capital on your own. Overnight stay.   (Meals: breakfast at the hotel)

Mexico City – Teotihuacán – Querétaro

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel and head 50km northeast of the city to the spectacular site of Teotihuacán , also known as the “City of the Gods” . Spread over 22km², it is the largest city of ruins in Latin America and the majority of it has yet to be excavated. You definitely should not miss out on climbing up the Sun and Moon Pyramids , as they provide an imposing view of the extent of this archaeological excavation. Continue to the colonial town of Querétaro which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and full of history as it played an important role in the Mexican Revolution. Explore the centro historico and visit the Teatro de la República which is where the 1917 Constitution was signed, the Plaza de Armas and Iglesia de La Cruz . Overnight stay.   (Meals: breakfast at the hotel)

Bernal – Opal Mine – Querétaro

After breakfast, visit the small colonial town of Bernal . Explore the cobblestone streets and try the famous gorditas (corn patties with your choice of filling) as well as the locally made candy. Here you can also climb the Peña de Bernal which is the third largest monolith in the world . Hike up the small steep paths for a beautiful view over the surrounding countryside. Local legends say that a long life will be granted to those who climb to the top. Afterwards, continue to a local opal mine . To get to the mine you must take a jeep on a bumpy adventure up to the opening of the mine. Here you will learn all about the procees and will also be given tools to break some rocks and look for your own opal . Continue to a local workshop where you can see the final product of polished stone before returning to Querétaro . Overnight stay. (Meals: breakfast at the hotel)

Querétaro – San Miguel de Allende – Guanajuato

Today, you will be picked up from your hotel and stop at the charming colonial town of San Miguel de Allende , also known as the “City of Artists” . On your city tour you will explore the cobblestone streets, art galleries and local market of the impeccably maintained centro histórico . The stunning architecture of the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel is a neo-gothic masterpiece and built in rose colour stone by the self taught architect Zerferino Gutierrez who is said to have used postcards of European churches as his inspiration. Admire the facade and interior of this unique church and learn more about the history of San Miguel. Enjoy a delicious lunch from a rooftop terrace (not included) overlooking San Miguel. Afterwards, continue to Guanajuato , another wonderful colonial town famous for its music and theater scene. Overnight stay. (Meals: breakfast at the hotel)

Guanajuato is a unique colonial town filled with tiny cobblestone streets and winding alleyways. Enjoy the day exploring the town and visit the Cathedral , the University, Diego Rivera´s birthplace , the famous kissing alley and take trip high up to the Pipila Monument for a spectacular view of the city. There is a vibrant art scene in Guanajuato and a month long festival of theater, music and poetry in October known as Cervantino. If you are lucky, in the evening you may encounter a wandering musical group known as “estudiantina” which play traditional songs throughout the city as they make their way through town. Get caught up in the atmosphere of this authentic Mexican city. Overnight stay. (Meals: breakfast at the hotel)

Guanajuato – Guadalajara

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel and will head to Guadalajara which is the capital of the State of Jalisco and Mexico´s second largest city. It is known for preserving the customs and traditions and is sometimes referred to as “the most Mexican city in Mexico” . After arriving in your hotel, your guide will take you on a city tour through the centro histórico and you can enjoy a delicious dinner (not included) accompanied of course by a local tequila produced in the region and the sounds of mariachi . Overnight stay.  (Meals: breakfast at the hotel)

Guadalajara

Today, you will explore the small neighbourhood of Tlaquepaque which has been swallowed up by the growing city. It has quaint tree lined streets and outdoor restaurants and is famous for its local artesenia and galleries . Wander through the neighbourhood visiting shops filled with art and handicrafts and soak up the atmosphere from a patio with a delicious margarita. Afterwards, you will be be returned to your hotel. Overnight stay. (Meals: breakfast at the hotel)

Guadalajara – Puerto Vallarta

According to your time of departure, please take a taxi (on your own) to either the bus station or the airport in Guadalajara. We recommend continuing on to the beach town of Puerto Vallarta (approx. 350 km). Upon request we can organize the flight and/or bus ticket. Overnight stay.   (Meals: breakfast at the hotel)

Moscú es una de las ciudades más interesantes de Europa . La capital rusa nos sorprendió muy positivamente. Y es que no te faltarán cosas que hacer en Moscú : desde alucinar con la espectacular Plaza Roja hasta disfrutar de sus preciosas iglesias. En este post te contamos 30 cosas que hacer en Moscú  para que disfrutes de sus encantos.

30 COSAS QUE VER Y QUE HACER EN MOSCÚ

• 1. Quedar impresionado en la Plaza Roja

La Plaza Roja es el corazón de Moscú desde hace siglos . Empezó siendo un mercado junto al barrio comercial de Kitay Gorod, tocando al Kremlin. Desde entonces ha sido un gran lugar de encuentro rodeado de maravillas arquitectónicas. Allí se han celebrado grandes ocasiones como la coronación de varios zares. Sigue siendo el centro de los actos oficiales del gobierno ruso y manifestaciones. Pasear sobre sus adoquines y quedar con la boca abierta es algo imprescindible que hacer en Moscú .

Por cierto, su nombre no tiene nada que ver con el color de los edificios que la rodean ni con el color que representa el comunismo. Se llama Plaza Roja porque la palabra que hoy en día se usa para decir “rojo” significaba “bonita” en ruso antiguo .

2. Conocer la  Catedral de San Basilio

En un extremo de la Plaza Roja se alza el icono más famoso de Rusia. La catedral de San Basilio lleva desde 1561 maravillando a todo el mundo con sus cúpulas de colores . El zar Iván el Terrible ordenó su construcción para celebrar la conquista de Kazán . Desde entonces, en sus más de cuatro siglos de historia, ha sobrevivido a muchas amenazas .

Además de fotografiar su exterior, puedes visitarla por dentro. La decoración recargada con tonos dorados tan típica de las iglesias ortodoxas es espectacular. La entrada cuesta 700 rublos (unos 10€).

• 3. Entrar al Mausoleo de Lenin, una de las cosas más curiosas que hacer en Moscú

Una de las visitas más curiosas que hacer en Moscú es el mausoleo de Lenin. Cuando el fundador de la Unión Soviética murió en 1924 miles de personas hicieron cola durante días para dar el último adiós a su cadáver . Él había manifestado el deseo de ser enterrado junto a su madre en San Petersburgo, pero Stalin quiso conservar su cuerpo embalsamado como una reliquia en memoria del padre del comunismo soviético .

El mausoleo está en plena Plaza Roja. Se puede visitar gratis los martes, miércoles, jueves y sábados de 10h a 13h . Basta con hacer cola y dejar los aparatos electrónicos antes de entrar, ya que no se permite hacer fotografías. Antes de entrar al mausoleo veras la necrópolis de la muralla del Kremlin . Allí están enterrados otros líderes entre los que destaca Stalin.

Ten en cuenta que durante un par de meses cada año se hacen tareas de mantenimiento en el cuerpo de Lenin y el mausoleo queda cerrado . Tampoco abre los días festivos o con actos oficiales.

• 4. Mirar escaparates en el centro comercial GUM

¿Puedes creer que unas galerías comerciales comparten protagonismo con las demás maravillas arquitectónicas de la Plaza Roja? Las grandiosas galerías GUM se construyeron en 1893 y llevan siendo el corazón comercial de Moscú desde entonces . Hoy en día puedes encontrar tiendas de marcas de lujo internacionales , pero durante la época soviética era muy distinto: GUM fue nacionalizado. De hecho, las siglas en ruso significan “Tienda Universal Estatal”.

Merece la pena dar un paseo para entrar en calor en invierno y admirar la preciosa cúpula que cubre los almacenes. Las tiendas son carísimas, pero hay cafeterías y puestos de helados asequibles .

5. Museo Estatal de Historia , una visita imprescindible que hacer en Moscú para los amantes de la historia

Allí podrás descubrir muchísimas cosas sobre la historia de Rusia , empezando por las tribus que poblaron el territorio hace miles de años. También hay grandes obras de arte nacionales . El museo cierra los martes. La entrada cuesta 500 rublos (unos 7€). Hay muy pocas explicaciones en inglés, así que conviene hacer la visita con audioguía.

• 6. Enamorarse de la bella Catedral de Kazán

En una esquina de la Plaza Roja quedarás sorprendido por una coqueta catedral de color rosado. Se trata de la Catedral de Kazán que, aunque tiene un aspecto barroco, es una creación de 1990 . La original se construyó a principios del siglo XVII y albergaba un icono de Nuestra Señora de Kazán.

Pero Stalin mandó derribar todas las iglesias de la Plaza Roja en 1936 . Él quería un espacio para hacer ceremonias soviéticas y las iglesias no entraban en su plan. Por suerte, la catedral de San Basilio sobrevivió gracias al valor de un arquitecto que se opuso a destruirla. Unas cuantas décadas más tarde también podemos seguir disfrutando de la belleza de la Catedral de Kazán gracias a su reconstrucción .

7. Entrar al Kremlin , una visita obligada que hacer en Moscú

Tocando a la Plaza Roja está el Kremlin, un recinto fortificado donde se ha concentrado el poder durante siglos . En los palacios del Kremlin vivieron varios zares, pero ahora es el lugar de trabajo del presidente ruso (aunque no vive allí). Rodeado de 20 torres, este recinto esconde muchas joyas arquitectónicas e históricas. Hay cuatro preciosas catedrales en una misma plaza , donde se han coronado y enterrado zares. También allí se encuentra la gigantesca campana del zar , que mide más de 6 metros de diámetro.

El otro gran atractivo del Kremlin es el Museo de la Armería . Allí no solo encontrarás armas, también una enorme colección de arte ruso y europeo a partir del siglo V. Por ejemplo, se pueden ver lujosos carruajes y vestimentas de la realeza. En definitiva, una visita imprescindible que hacer en Moscú para conocer su historia .

La entrada para visitar las catedral cuesta 700 rublos (unos 10€). Para visitar el Museo de la Armería es necesaria otra entrada que vale 1000 rublos (14€ aproximadamente). Una vez dentro del museo, tendrás acceso al fondo de diamantes por 500 rublos adicionales (7€).

Si quieres visitarlo por tu cuenta, te recomendamos reservar las entradas en su página web oficial . Tendrás que pasar por las taquillas 6, 7 u 8 a recoger tu ticket, pero es mucho más rápido que hacer cola para las demás taquillas y comprar allí la entrada. • 8. Divisar el Kremlin desde el Parque Zaryadye, una de las fotos más bonitas que hacer en Moscú

Un mirador excelente del Kremlin es el parque Zaryadye. Está sobre una pequeña colina a 2 minutos a pie de la Plaza Roja . Desde allí podrás contemplar una preciosa puesta de sol con las torres de la fortificación y las cúpulas de la catedral de San Basilio como protagonistas .

• 9. Soñar con ser astronauta en el Museo de la Cosmonáutica

El museo de la Cosmonáutica es otra visita muy interesante que hacer en Moscú . Se centra en los éxitos del programa espacial soviético, con un montón de objetos curiosos expuestos como cápsulas espaciales o trajes de astronauta .

Encima del museo hay un monumento espectacular dedicado a los conquistadores del espacio rusos . Se trata de un pequeño cohete suspendido en el cielo con su estela en forma de obelisco de más de 100 metros de altura. También están los bustos de los astronautas más célebres como Yuri Gagarin, el primer hombre en llegar al espacio .

La entrada cuesta 250 rublos (unos 3,50€). Gran parte del material expuesto sólo tiene explicaciones en ruso, sobre todo fotografías y objetos personales. Así que te recomendamos alquilar una audioguía por 250 rublos más .

10. Pasear por VDNKh , una visita diferente que hacer en Moscú

Un buen lugar para pasear después de visitar el Museo de la Cosmonáutica es VDKNh. Las siglas en ruso significan “Exposición de los Logros de la Economía Rusa”, así se bautizó uno de los eventos que se celebraron allí en los años 30. Es un complejo enorme al aire libre con decenas de edificios grandiosos de la época .

Actualmente es un recinto de ocio con jardines, fuentes, museos, tiendas, edificios para ferias comerciales… Es uno de los lugares favoritos de los locales para pasear cuando hace buen tiempo.

• 11. Ver Moscú desde las alturas en la Torre Ostankino

¿Sabías que Moscú tiene la torre más alta de Europa ? La torre de telecomunicaciones Ostankino mide 540 metros de altura . Incluso es el octavo edificio más alto del mundo. Ya impresiona verla desde su base, pero lo mejor es subir a la plataforma de observación a 337 metros . Cuesta entre 700 y 1300 rublos (10-18€) según el día y la hora.

• 12. Disfrutar del Kremlin de Izmaylovo, un lugar muy colorido que ver en Moscú

¡No hay un solo Kremlin en la cuidad! Una de las visitas más mágicas que hacer en Moscú es pasear por el Kremlin de Izmaylovo. No tiene ningún objetivo de defensa, simplemente es un recinto que parece sacado de un cuento . Se construyó en 2007 como una zona de entretenimiento que evoca la antigua Rusia . Sus edificios de colores con cúpulas de mil formas son preciosos. ¡Incluso se celebran bodas allí!

• 13. Comprar souvenirs en el mercadillo de Izmaylovo

Junto al Kremlin de Izmaylovo hay un mercadillo ideal para comprar souvenirs . Si te gusta volver a casa con un recuerdo de tus viajes, es imposible marcharte del mercado de Izmaylovo con las manos vacías . Hay cientos de paradas donde venden matrioshkas, camisetas, típicos gorros rusos, antigüedades y mil cosas más. Algunos vendedores tienen la calculadora lista para que regatees y consigas un mejor precio.

14. Ver el interior del Teatro Bolshói , uno de los más famosos del mundo

Algo único que hacer en Moscú es asistir a una representación en el famoso teatro Bolshói. Abrió en 1856 y desde entonces es hogar de uno de los mejores ballets del mundo. Su escenario también ha visto pasar grandes óperas. Si quieres ver algún espectáculo, puedes reservar las entradas en la página web del teatro.

También es posible visitar su precioso interior haciendo una visita guiada en inglés los lunes, miércoles y viernes a las 12:15h . Las entradas cuestan 1300 rublos (unos 18€). Se tienen que comprar en la taquilla el mismo día, así que conviene ir pronto para no quedarse sin sitio. Si lo prefieres, puedes reservar un tour guiado en español .

• 15. Pasear por la calle Arbat, algo entretenido que hacer en Moscú

En el centro histórico de Moscú hay una calle peatonal con mucho ambiente. La calle Arbat ha ido vinculada tradicionalmente a los artistas y artesanos . Aunque hoy en día solo quedan tiendas de souvenirs y algunos caricaturistas , su ambiente pintoresco se mantiene. Es un buen lugar para dar un paseo, parar a tomar algo en sus restaurantes y comprar algún recuerdo de la ciudad.

• 16. Visitar el monasterio Novodevichy

Parece mentira que en mitad del bullicio de una ciudad tan grande pueda haber un monasterio en funcionamiento . Pero existe, ¡y es precioso! El monasterio Novodevichy es un gran ejemplo de barroco moscovita, con edificios llenos de detalles y colores vivos . Si ya has visitado en Kremlin antes, seguramente la iglesia central del monasterio te resulte familiar. Es una réplica de la Catedral de la Asunción que hay dentro del Kremlin.

La entrada cuesta 300 rublos (unos 4€). Está alejado del centro, pero se llega fácilmente bajando en la parada de metro Sportivnaya.

• 17. Alucinar con las estaciones del metro de Moscú

Moverse en metro es la forma más económica de conocer la ciudad. Las distancias son enormes, así que en un momento u otro tendrás que usar el transporte público. El metro de Moscú nos pareció unos de los mejores del mundo . Los trenes pasan cada 2 minutos, las estaciones son muy seguras y es muy económico.

Pero lo mejor son sus estaciones, muchas de ellas son auténticas obras de arte . No te pierdas Komsomolskaya (línea 5), Arbatskaya o Park Kultury.

• 18. Localizar todos los rascacielos de Stalin

No importa en qué parte de Moscú te encuentres. Seguramente en todo momentos divisarás alguna torre parecida al Empire State. Se trata de un conjunto conocido como las 7 hermanas o los rascacielos de Stalin . El dictador quiso construir ocho rascacielos para conmemorar el octavo aniversario de Moscú en 1947 , pero la octava torre nunca llegó a construirse.

Las 7 hermanas miden entre 133 y 240 metros . Te recomendamos visitar el Hotel Ucrania , que fue el más alto del mundo durante unos años y también la imponente Universidad Estatal de Moscú , la torre más grande de todas.

• 19. Sentirte como un corresponsal de televisión en uno de los mejores miradores gratuitos de Moscú

El puente de Bolshói Kamenny está tocando al Kremlin y tiene unas vistas privilegiadas . De hecho, nosotros nos encontramos con un par de cámaras de televisión preparadas para hacer una conexión en directo cuando pasamos por el puente. La panorámica es preciosa, especialmente al atardecer.

20. Entrar al Museo Pushkin , una visita imprescindible que hacer en Moscú para los amantes del arte

Después del Hermitage en San Petersburgo, el Museo Pushkin de Moscú tiene la colección de arte europeo más importante de Rusia. Así que es una visita imprescindible que hacer en Moscú para los amantes del arte. Tiene una colección enorme, desde esculturas egipcias hasta obras de siglo XX . Destacan las obras de Rembrandt, Renoir, Gauguin, Van Gogh y Cézanne . La entrada cuesta 400 rublos (5,50€ aproximadamente).

• 21. Conocer la Catedral de Cristo Salvador, un lugar con mucha historia

La iglesia ortodoxa más alta del mundo está en Moscú . Y ha tenido una historia bastante convulsa. La catedral de Cristo Salvador original se terminó en 1883 después de casi 50 años de construcción . Desgraciadamente no duró mucho, porque se derribó con explosivos por orden de Stalin en 1931 .

Su misión era construir el Palacio de los Soviets, destruyendo todo rastro de la cultura rusa anterior. Por fortuna, a finales de los años 80 se empezó la reconstrucción siguiendo los planos originales y hoy en día se puede disfrutar de esta belleza . Sin duda, es una de las visitas más fascinantes que hacer en Moscú .

• 22. Alucinar con los rascacielos de Moscow City, una de las cosas más sorprendentes que hacer en Moscú

Moscú no solo es sinónimo de la Rusia más tradicional. También tiene una zona con rascacielos digna de estar en Dubái o Nueva York . Moscow City es un gran proyecto de ingeniería que empezó en 1996 y aún no está terminado . Muchos de sus edificios superan los 300 metros de altura, entrando en el ranking de los más altos de Europa .

Pasear por Moscow City y mirar al cielo es impresionante. Además de albergar oficinas, es un gran complejo de entretenimiento con tiendas . El principal centro comercial se llama Afimall.

23. Subir a Panorama 360 , el mirador más alto de Europa

En la planta 89 de la Federation Tower hay un mirador con vistas a casi todos los rincones de Moscú. Es un lugar espectacular para contemplar el atardecer desde las alturas. ¡Nada más y nada menos que en el mirador más alto de Europa ! Se accede a través del centro comercial Afimall y la entrada cuesta 1200 rublos (unos 16€). Incluye el acceso, una foto de recuerdo y la opción de comer todo el helado que quieras una vez arriba.

• 24. Disfrutar al aire libre en el Parque Gorki

Gorki es el parque por excelencia de Moscú . Tiene muchísimas opciones de entretenimiento durante todo el año. Por ejemplo, durante los meses más fríos se monta una enorme pista de patinaje. En verano se hacen clases de yoga, por ejemplo. También es posible alquilar bicicletas o barcas para descubrir el parque a tu aire .

25. Visitar Tsarítsino , un palacio de verano de los zares

Este es otro espacio verde genial para disfrutar de un día soleado en Moscú . Es una finca enorme al sur de la ciudad con invernaderos, jardines, estanques e incluso un palacio del siglo XVIII. Fue el palacio de verano de la zarina Catalina La Grande , ¡vaya lujo! La entrada para visitar este museo al aire libre cuesta 650 rublos (9€ aproximadamente).

Puedes combinar la visita con el parque Kolomenskoye en esta excursión guiada en español .

• 26. Descubrir el curioso Muzeon Park of Arts

El pasado y el presente se entremezclan en este parque tan curioso. Es una especie de cementerio para los cientos de esculturas soviéticas que se retiraron de las calles con el final del comunismo en 1992 . Es una zona peatonal muy moderna donde suele haber un ambiente animado.

• 27. Ir de compras en Aviapark

Aviapark es el segundo centro comercial más grande de Europa por detrás de Westfield Londres . Hay cientos de tiendas y restaurantes de todo tipo. ¡Incluso hay un acuario en mitad del recinto! Si te apetece ir de compras, puedes pasar horas explorando sus 6 plantas . Se puede llegar en taxi desde el centro en unos 20 minutos. También puedes tomar el metro hasta la parada CSKA, la más cercana.

• 28. Relajarse en Sanduny, algo tradicional que hacer en Moscú

Sanduny son los primeros baños públicos de la capital rusa . Abrieron en 1808 y pasar unas horas dejando atrás las tensiones en sus piscinas y saunas es todo un ritual para los rusos. Hay zonas separadas por sexos y otras mixtas, aunque si quieres privacidad lo mejor es reservar tu propia sala . Allí podrás comer, disfrutar de un masaje u otros tratamientos estéticos. ¡Todo un lujo!

• 29. Sentir la tensión de la Guerra fría en Bunker 42

Una visita un tanto extraña que hacer en Moscú es bajar a 65 metros bajo tierra para sentir en tu propia piel la amenaza nuclear. Y es que durante los años 50 el gobierno de la URSS mandó construir un gran refugio para proteger a los líderes soviéticos en caso de un ataque nuclear de Estados Unidos durante la tensa Guerra Fría . Se puede hacer un tour guiado en inglés por el lugar por 2200 rublos (30€). Incluso hay un restaurante subterráneo con una atmósfera muy peculiar.

• 30. Ir de excursión a Sergiev Posad

Para terminar con nuestra lista de cosas que hacer en Moscú , te proponemos una excursión. Puedes dedicarle medio día o un día entero, en función del tiempo que dispongas. El atractivo principal de esta ciudad es el monasterio de la Trinidad y San Sergio . El conjunto de edificios ortodoxos es bellísimo . Además, es fácil encontrarse con algunos de los 300 monjes que viven allí durante su día a día.

Se puede llegar en tren por tu cuenta , se tarda una hora y media aproximadamente. Puedes comprar los billetes en la misma estación de Yaroslavsky. También hay excursiones con guía en español para que no tengas que preocuparte por organizar nada .

A Moscow Free Walking Tour of the Iconic Red Square

No visit to Moscow, Russia is complete unless you take a walk around the famous Red Square and see the iconic sights of the city. One of the best ways to see all the famous landmarks in Moscow and learn a little something about them too is on a free Moscow walking tour through the Red Square.

Continue reading for a sneak peek at what you will see on your free tour in Moscow and for tips on both the tour and visiting the sights. Make sure to save some time during your trip to go inside of the magnificent buildings because you will not be going in the buildings during the tour.

The State Historical Museum

The Moscow free walking tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum . You can’t miss this massive red building. The museum’s interior is almost as spectacular as the artifacts you can see within. Read my post dedicated to the museum here to find out more on what you can see and tips for visiting. Admission is free with the Moscow City Pass .

The Kremlin

Behind the walls of the Kremlin lie the working offices of Russian’s government and president. When visiting the Kremlin you can see the Armory Chamber, Cathedral Square, the Patriach’s Palace and many more cathedrals. You definitely want to buy tickets ahead of time so you avoid the long-lines. You can get free admission with the Moscow City Pass . It’s also worth it to take a guided tour if you don’t speak Russian so you have more of an understanding of what you are seeing.

St. Basil’s Cathedral

If asked to conquer up an image of Moscow, St. Basil’s Cathedral might just be the most likely image you picture. The cathedral has a museum that you can visit at a later time. You can buy tickets at the ticket kiosk outside the cathedral or receive free admission with the Moscow City Pass .

Moskva River

Next up on the tour is the Moskva River which runs through the center of Moscow. A cruise on the Moskva River is a great way to see the city from a different perspective.

GUM Shopping Mall

Who would think a mall would be one of Moscow’s most well-known attractions? GUM shopping mall across from the Kremlin makes up one of the four sides of the Red Square. The stores might be a bit too pricey for shopping, but the gorgeous interior is worth a visit. If that doesn’t convince you, the mall has some of the best ice cream! GUM is the only building you go inside during the free walking tour. There are pay bathrooms you can use while you have a few minutes of free time.

Kazan Cathedral

Located on the northeast corner of the Red Square, the Kazan Cathedral is another impressive dome-shaped building in Moscow that is also an active place of worship. Entering the cathedral is allowed, but remember to be respectful if people are worshipping.

Bolshoi Theater

Contrary to the previous buildings, the Bolshoi Theater isn’t along one of the four sides of the Red Square. Located a few minutes away, the theater is one of the best theaters in the world. Make sure to come back for a guided tour of the inside or make reservations far ahead of time to attend a ballet or opera.

Alexander Gardens

The tour ends near the Alexander Gardens , a free public park located along the western Kremlin walls. The garden’s green lawns, sculptures and water fountains offer a nice place to take a stroll or relax a bit after some busy sightseeing.

You can visit all these sites on your own, but the best part of doing the Moscow free tour is that you learn more information and have the potential to meet new people!

During my tour I started to talk to a woman from Malaysia and she invited me to join her and her friends for a Russian meal afterwards. It’s these little impromptu meetings and opportunities that I love most about traveling and add more to the sightseeing experience. While I was a little hesitant about going to the tour myself I told myself it would be a great opportunity to possibly meet new people. I love when things work out like that!

How to Get There

The Moscow Free Walking Tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum (a large red building). The website shows a map with the exact meeting point.

To get to the red square area you can take the blue 3 metro line to the Ploshchad Revolyutsii stop, or the green 2 line to the Teatralnaya station or the red 1 line to the Okhotny Ryad station. For more on how to use the metro read my Moscow Metro Guide .

If you need a toilet before the start of the tour the Okhotny Ryad and GUM shopping malls are both close to the start of the tour. You will need to pay to use the toilets. There is a quick break mid-way through the tour at the GUM shopping mall where you can use the toilet if needed.

During the mid-way break in the tour you can buy some ice cream at the GUM shopping mall. There aren’t many other options or time for anything else. After the tour there are a lot of restaurants in the area. There are a couple of Varenichnaya №1 locations nearby if you would like some authentic Russian food. Their speciality is Russian dumplings. Another classic choice nearby is Grand Cafe Dr. Jhivago. While you can try traditional Russian foods like borscht and Olivier Salad, you may need a reservation. GUM has several restaurants, including a couple of buffets upstairs.

Recommendations

While I would start off your visit to Moscow with a tour of the Red Square, make sure to come back to each place to tour the inside. If you are visiting several sights consider buying the Moscow City Pass  to save money on admissions.

Another company  Moscow Free Tour  does a similar free walking tour in the Red Square. Check the site for the details on the starting point and times. If you prefer a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to St. Basil’s Cathedral included check out this tour . For a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to the Kremlin included you may want to take this tour or this one . Even if you don’t typically take tours, I would recommend taking tours as much as possible in Moscow. Many people do not speak English and most information is not in English either.

I would love to take the walking tour to get a good coverage of the area! The tip about paying for the bathrooms is great. That’s something I didn’t realize when I went to Europe for the first time from the US.

I visited Moscow in June this year for the World Cup and I loved it. St. Basil’s Cathedral was the highlight for me, it’s such an impressive piece of architecture. I would’ve liked to visit more of Russia but maybe next time!

I have been to St. Petersburg but never to Moscow. I think that these kind of tours are very useful to gather many information but I second your suggestion to visit the palaces inside as they have stunning interior decor and art treasures.

St. Basil’s cathedral is definitely a beautiful place to visit. I would also love to stroll by the Alexander gardens and maybe spend some time in the shopping mall call mom maybe visit the theater, also I would love to visit Kremlin and the State Historical Museum. That’s a great list you have managed to provide here.

Never been to Russia, but the country’s history and culture has always fascinated me. Great list of things to do in Moscow’s Red Square. Kremlin is definitely on top of my list!

The architecture here always looks so beautiful. I would love to go to Russia. Some helpful tips here that would really help me navigate a future trip. I love the Russian ballet so a trip to the theater would be a must for me.
