Cruises to South Korea

On South Korea cruises, you’ll find the perfect mix of natural beauty, edgy urban architecture, and cultural experiences to explore, not to mention an exotic and intriguing cuisine. Visit towering mountains and cascading waterfalls, see cities founded over 1,000 years ago, and explore fascinating holy sites.

On an Asia cruise with Celebrity, stroll along the surf beaches of Jeju Island, surrounded by volcanic rock formations and lush green fields. Discover the majesty and deep history of Buddhist temples in Busan. Embrace the pace of dynamic Seoul, where glassy towers sit alongside high-end design, bustling food markets, and deep-rooted tradition. Make your next vacation one to remember on one of our cruises to South Korea.

South Korea Cruise Highlights

Temples and palaces.

South Korea is home to many palaces and temples that represent various eras and layers of religious and cultural history. Visit the Tongdosa Temple in Busan, built in the 7th century and home to several shrines and relics. Tour the Yakcheonsa Temple on Jeju Island, a sacred Buddist landmark famous for its tiered Chinese-styled roofing and the 18,000 tiny Buddha statues housed in its Dharma hall. In Seoul, explore Gyeongbokgung, a sprawling and dazzlingly ornate royal palace.

Mighty Mountains & Volcanic Islands

South Korea is rich in natural scenery, including green mountains, plunging waterfalls, and ancient volcanoes. Step over the thrilling glass-bottomed Oryukdo Skywalk, which is cantilevered over the cliff for breathtaking views of Oryukdo. From Busan, visit Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, perched on a vast rock that rises from the ocean, and colorful Gamcheon for art and street food. On Jeju Island, hike up volcanic Mount Halla for stupendous views across the countryside.

Beaches & Fishing Villages

South Korea’s coastline is known for its blissful beaches, many lined with buzzing beach bars. The shores of South Korea are also home to sleepy fishing villages and fascinating markets that illustrate how important the sea is to the local economy. Enjoy the beautiful white sand and calm surf at Gwakji Beach on Jeju Island, and learn about the extraordinary local women who free-dive to harvest octopus and abalone. In Busan, meanwhile, soak up the urban vibe of Haeundae Beach.

Featured South Korea Cruise Ports

Sprawling Seoul effortlessly blends glassy skyscrapers and gleaming malls with traditional tea houses, ornate temples, and lavish palaces. The culture here is a curious mix of hipster fashion and buzzing nightlife set against the ancient Confucian culture that embraces politeness and respect for elders. Explore the palaces and taste spicy street foods at the excellent markets. Make time for a day trip to the DMZ, the demilitarized zone on the border with North Korea.

Bustling Busan, South Korea’s second-largest city, fuses cutting-edge architecture with traditional temples, teeming markets, and mountains, forests, and beaches. Visit Jagalchi Fish Market and snack on fresh seafood. Explore Haedong Yonggung temple, suspended over a cliff. Take a trip to the serene Tongdosa Temple, 1,300 years old and housing some of the Buddha’s relics. Brave the Oryukdo Skywalk, a glass-floored bridge that juts out high above the foaming sea.

Jeju Island

South Korea’s largest island is a tropical paradise that blends glorious beaches with towering volcanoes, mysterious caves, and delicious cuisine. Try the grilled abalone, hand-caught by skilled female divers, and the famous barbecued black pork. Visit the ribbon-like cascades of Cheonjeyeon Waterfall and descend into the mysterious lava-tube cave at Manjanggul. Jeju has some enchantingly quirky museums, too, from the Teddy Bear Museum to the O’Sulloc Museum, dedicated entirely to tea drinking.

South Korea Cruise Itineraries

South Korea cruises sail either round-trip from Tokyo (Yokohama), Japan, or one-way between Tokyo and Incheon, the port for Seoul. Either route is the perfect chance to explore the scenic coasts and fascinating cities of Japan and South Korea in depth.

Incheon (Seoul, Korea)

Cruise port schedule, live map, terminals, news.

Incheon cruise port

Region Asia

Local Time 2024-05-10 09:18

Port Incheon cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Incheon, Seoul, Korea. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Incheon is South Korea's principal seaport and a Metro City bordering Gyeonggi Province and Seoul Special City (approx 40 km / 25 mi) to the east. By population (around 3 million), the city is ranked Korea’s 3rd largest - following Seoul and Busan . The city's growth is mainly based on the development of the seaport and the proximity to country's capital. Incheon is part of Seoul Capital Area (Seoul and Gyeonggi), forming world's 2nd-largest metro area by population (over 25,5 million, or around 1/2 of Korea's total population).

As international port, Inchon was opened in 1883. In 2003, the city was designated as Korea's first "free economic zone". Since then, global enterprises and large Korean companies have increasingly invested in Incheon Free Economic Zone, including Samsung company which chose Songdo International City as its new investment destination for bio industry.

Currently, South Korea has 4 cruise ports with all 5 international passenger terminals - Sokcho , Busan , Jeju and Incheon.

Port Incheon

Port Incheon (locode KRICH) is South Korea's principal/main seaport and the second-largest cargo port (by annual shipping volumes) - after Port Busan.

In 2016, the cruise port handled a total of 62 ship calls and ~165,000 passengers. Of those, 47 (~76%) were ships on itineraries with departures from China. In 2016, South Korea was visited by ~2 million cruise ship tourists 130% increase over 2015). The country was included in a total of 811 cruise itineraries, of which 534 to Jeju , 215 to Busan , 62 to Incheon. Official statistical data (reported by Korea's Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries) for 2016 showed that a foreign cruise tourist spends on average nearly USD 890 (on tours / excursions, shopping, food, drinks, services).

In March 2017, Incheon - a major call port of cruises from China to South Korea and Japan, was on alert as China's government officially ordered Chinese travel agencies to halt selling South Korean cruises. The measure was in retaliation for Seoul's push for US military deployment (advanced anti-missile system) on its territory. China harshly criticized South Korea's decision to introduce the advanced THAAD system, posing threats to its security.

In 2017, the Port had 43 scheduled cruise ship visits (later reduced to 21), of which 30 (~70%) were pre-booked as departures from China. Among the 2017's newcomers was the Princess Cruises liner  Majestic Princess (China-homeported, maiden call on July 7th).

On December 27, 2017, Port Incheon reported a record year with processed 3,048 million TEU-containers. TEU refers to containerized cargo transported on container ships in 20-ft container boxes. The special occasion was celebrated by the Incheon Port Authority (IPA) in Sheraton Grand Incheon Hotel on December 27, 2017.

  • The 3 million TEUs record was preceded by 1 million TEUs (handled in 2005) and 2 million TEUs (in 2013), Port's 2017 record shipping volume ranked it as the world's 47th among the largest container ports.
  • The container shipping volume was handled by serving cargo vessels on a total of 49 routes (for comparison - just 26 routes in 2005).
  • Besides the TEU volume, the port's impact on the local economy is also significant as it generates 33,8% of the region’s gross national product and provides 6,4 local jobs per 10,000 TEUs (1920 jobs in 2017).
  • The port is expected to enter the world's top 30 containerports list by the year 2025, handling over 4 million TEUs.

In 2018, the 3 million TEU mark was once again surpassed. Based on November's cumulative total by country, seaport's shipping trade with China reached 1,691325 million TEUs (1,6% increase over 2017), with Vietnam 288,885 TEUs (17,3% increase) and with Thailand 119,024 TEUs (9,1% increase). Port's trade with these countries changed 60,1% to 59,5% (China), 8,9% to 10,2% (Vietnam) and 3,9% to 4,2% (Thailand). South Korea's largest containerports reported for 2018 TEU volumes 9,342541 million (Busan, 0,3% increase), 2,814141 million (Incheon, 4,1% increase), 1,662500 million (Gwangyang, 3.5% increase). By the end of December, Port Incheon's TEU traffic reached 3,12 million (2,4% increase over 2017).

In April 2019 was officially inaugurated the new ferry terminal (USD 160 million project). In June was opened (officially inaugurated in April) the International Passenger Terminal - South Korea's largest cruise terminal. The facility can handle even the world's largest cruise liners  of  Royal Caribbean 's Oasis-Class (max passengers 6370 plus 2400 crew).

In mid-September 2019, IPA signed a deal with "ABB Marine and Ports" (Finland-based manufacturer of gearless steerable propulsion systems) to supply and install the seaport’s first shoreside (dock-to-ship) power supply system . The technology allows berthed passenger ships to turn off their diesel engines and use electricity (provided via the city's power grid), thus reducing greatly in-port emissions, soot particles, noise and vibrations. The IPA-ABB deal included delivery and installation of shore-power connection at the new passenger terminal. The system has capacity 2000 kVA and power output 50/60HZ.

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, Port Incheon paused its cruise shipping operations for 2+ years (between February 2020 and May 2022).

Incheon cruise terminal

Via a joint venture company, the South Korean government built a new cruise terminal in Port Incheon (in Songdo Business District). The new "International Passenger Terminal" is a USD 580 million investment. The project was completed in 2019 (the terminal was officially opened on April 25). The new cruise facility has capacity to berth even the world's largest cruise ships of RCI-Royal Caribbean 's Oasis-Class (GT 228000 tons, LOA length 362 m, max passengers 6370 plus 2400 crew).

Incheon International Terminal (Golden Harbor, Songdo)

Cruise terminal's size is 0,8 km2 (0,3 ml2). It is located northwest of Songdo City and includes passenger terminal (futuristic building), retail dining venues, outdoor park, Yacht Club, Water Park, large shopping mall, Urban Entertainment Center, resort hotels.

Designed by Cuningham Group, the innovative concept makes the facility itself a leisure destination. The waterfront open-air park is along the shoreline and features yacht club and boat marina. The indoor-outdoor water park is also along the shoreline and features entertainment pier with popular attractions (including Ferris wheel).

The new cruise terminal was part of Incheon Port Authority's plan for developing an international tourism complex (named "Golden Harbor") that targets a market (including passenger shipping) of around 3 million per year. Construction works started on April 29, 2016. The construction of terminal's building (floor space size 7364 m2 / 79,265 ft2) started in October 2016. Works on the terminal started in October 2018. The facility was inaugurated on April 25, 2019.

The Golden Harbor project comprises a new docking wharf, 2-story passenger terminal building (with logistics facilities) and harbor leisure complex. The facility allows numerous culture and leisure activities, plus an exclusive area for international cruise passengers. Project's 1st stage included the construction of transport networks (roads) and facilities for the new harbor.

Phase 2 included the construction of hotels and condos around the cruise harbor (completed in April 2018). Project's budget (Korean Won 28 billion / USD 24 million) was funded by South Korea's Government, Incheon Port Authority and also by private investors.

Terminal's berthing capacity is 2 large liners simultaneously. Pier's length is 430 m (1411 ft). Golden Harbor International Terminal is used as cruise tourism complex by both Korean citizens and international tourists. Terminal's first vessel was Costa Serena (2800-passenger ship) which on April 25 left Incheon on a 6-day itinerary to Fukuoka and Busan .

3 South Korean Temples to Visit on a Korea and Japan Cruise

By margaret adsit.

Beomeosa Temple, near Busan, South Korea, is over 1,300 years old and houses important cultural relics of Korean history.

Often situated in remote locations across South Korea, Buddhist temples represent a rich cultural heritage and significant portion of Korean history. Enjoy the natural beauty surrounding these temples, quietly reflect in their ancient pagodas, and view the rare relics within on your next Korea and Japan cruise .

Beomeosa Temple

Located in the shadow of Geumjeong Mountain (Geumjeongsan) near the major city of Busan, South Korea, Beomeosa Temple has stood for more than 1,300 years as a center for Korean Buddhism. Beomeosa, meaning "fish from heaven," derives its name from the golden fish that, according to legend, live and play in a golden well on top of Geumjeongsan. The temple has been rebuilt twice: once in 1592, after burning down during a Japanese invasion, and again in 1602 after an accidental fire. A renovation took place in 1713, and the temple's structures have remained intact since. Several of these structures have been designated as national treasures, including the main temple hall, Daeungjeon, and the three-story stone pagoda. The monks of Beomeosa have their own claim to fame as well, having defeated Japanese invaders during two separate invasions — one in the late 16th century and another in the early 1900s. The temple is much smaller now then in the past, once having housed more than 1,000 monks, but it is still one of the most well-known temples in all of South Korea.

Haedong Yonggungsa Temple

Haedong Yonggungsa offers visitors a sublime view of the sea. One of the most beautiful temples in Busan, South Korea , it was originally built in 1376 in honor of Avalokitesvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Given the bodhisattva's association with healing (and, similarly, the relationship between water, healing, and purification), the temple's seaside location makes spiritual, as well as aesthetic, sense. There are 108 steps, representing the 108 torments of the world, that stand between visitors and the temple — making arrival at this serene sanctuary the perfect reward to a physical challenge. Once you're there, make your way to the underground grotto where you can view the sanctuary of Avalokitesvara, or take a moment to enjoy the three-story pagoda flanked by four lions that represent happiness, joy, anger, and sadness.

Tongdosa Temple

The largest Korean temple, Tongdosa, is one of the three Jewel Temples of Korea and represents Buddha. There are no statues on the outside of Tongdosa's building structures; instead, relics are contained within the many pagodas on the temple grounds. Built in 646 CE during the reign of Queen Sun-Deok, the temple encompasses 35 buildings and pagodas as well as 14 small temples. Glowing for more than 1,300 years, its beopdeung (temple candle) has never gone out. Take time to stop by several of the pagodas, some of which house exquisite murals, and marvel at the relics of Buddha.

The temples in South Korea can offer you a sense of inner peace that you won't find anywhere else in the world. Take time to step back into South Korean history, rejuvenate, and come back new.

North Korea's Cruise Missile Tests Escalate Tensions Amidst Stalled Diplomacy

N orth Korea has once again ratcheted up tensions with the firing of several cruise missiles, according to South Korea’s military. The launches took place near Sinpo, a key military shipyard on the North’s east coast where missile-firing submarines are constructed. This latest demonstration of North Korea’s expanding arsenal raises concerns about regional security and the potential for escalated military confrontation.

The recent missile tests are part of a broader series of weapons demonstrations that include last week’s unveiling of a new cruise missile, Pulhwasal-3-31, and the test-firing of the country’s first solid-fuel intermediate-range ballistic missile on January 14. These activities underscore North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s efforts to develop weaponry capable of evading missile defenses in South Korea and Japan, as well as targeting remote U.S. assets in the Pacific, such as Guam.

Pyongyang’s steady pace in cruise missile launches, at least ten rounds since 2021, demonstrates an aim to enhance its strike capabilities. The claimed range of these missiles, up to 2,000 kilometers, poses a stark threat to U.S. military bases in Japan. Although these cruise missile activities are not directly banned under United Nations sanctions, experts warn they pose a serious threat due to their ability to fly at low altitudes, making them harder to detect by radar.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have been on the upswing for months, with Kim Jong Un continuing to advance his weapons development and issuing threats of nuclear conflict against the U.S. and its Asian allies. In response, the U.S., South Korea, and Japan have been intensifying their military exercises and refining their deterrence strategies, involving nuclear-capable U.S. assets.

North Korea, meanwhile, has described its weapons tests as part of regular efforts to strengthen its military and indicated that some missiles have “strategic” purposes, suggesting they may be intended for nuclear armament.

The implications of these developments are far-reaching. On the one hand, they reflect North Korea’s determination to bolster its leverage in any potential future negotiations with the U.S. On the other hand, they complicate the already strained security situation in the region. North Korea’s actions have not only drawn sharp condemnation from South Korea and Japan but also from the U.S. These missile tests come at a time when diplomacy with the United States and South Korea remains stalled, with observers suggesting that Pyongyang believes an upgraded weapons arsenal could grant it greater concessions should talks resume.
