Santa Paula Cruise Night celebrates 25 years

cruise night racing

It's been 25 years since the inaugural Santa Paula Cruise Night.

When the event returns Friday evening, it will hit a milestone with that quarter-century mark.

One key to cruise night's popularity is the showcase of classic cars from 1981 and earlier, some of which can be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

"Every state, every town has hot rods and they all have their own get-togethers," said Eddie Escoto, 81, who plans to drive from Ojai to Santa Paula in his 1976 metallic red Chevy C10 Stepside truck. "I know guys in Utah, I get emails from them and their car shows. It's a big, big thing in the United States."

The Santa Paula-based free event that began in 1998 is set for 5 p.m. Friday on Main Street. Anywhere between 3,000 to 5,000 people and more than 300 cars are expected, said John Marquez, executive director of the Santa Paula Chamber of Commerce.

"I'm not a real big car buff, but I love coming out and seeing the cars," said Marquez, who grew up in the city and goes to cruise night annually. "I love the camaraderie of the people and a good, relaxed atmosphere. It's just a cool vibe downtown."

The event, which will feature the band Jacob Marquez and the Good Vibes and a variety of food options, is technically celebrating its 24th anniversary, said Ishmael Cordero, who has helped to organize the event through the Santa Paula Police Officers Association. The 2020 event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he said.

Cruise night began when Henry Aguilar and Dave Anderson, two now-retired Santa Paula police officers, started the gathering at the suggestion of the late Bob Gonzales , who was then police chief, he said.

Cordero, a former Santa Paula interim police chief, said the trio enjoyed hot rod, racing and classic cars and wanted to help revitalize the community.

"Other officers participated that had those types of cars back then," Cordero said. "They started what they called Cruise Night."

The event was popular from the start, Cordero said, and no crimes or disturbances have taken place there.

The monthly event, which runs on the first Friday of every month through October, costs about $25,000 to put on, Marquez said.

Last year, the Santa Paula Chamber of Commerce and the Santa Paula Together organization provided financial support including permits, insurance, street closures and entertainment. For the 25th anniversary, both organizations as well as the downtown Property Business Improvement District and the Santa Paula Police Officers Association will pitch in.

Cruising is back. A new law has made lowriders legit

Cars cruise along Van Nuys Boulevard during a sanctioned event in April 2021.

As a teenager in the 1970s, Jovita Arellano would perch in the window of her family’s National City apartment to watch the candy-colored parade of lowriders cruise down Highland Avenue.

She loved how the light reflected off their chrome rims and the gleam of paint that had been meticulously polished. Cars would ride so close to the ground that any small shift in weight caused their undercarriages to scrape against the pavement.

“I’m going to get a lowrider,” she promised herself before she was even old enough to drive. “I don’t care what it takes.”

But cruising’s days were numbered.

Many California cities banned the activity in the 1980s, with opponents maintaining that cruising was associated with gangs and violence. Such accusations, according to cruisers, stemmed from stereotypes that the mostly Latino community has faced for years.

“It felt like we were rejected,” Arellano said. “We weren’t allowed to drive our cars down the streets.”

Then in 2021, a movement to decriminalize cruising began to take root in National City. What started as a local effort to end the ban led to a statewide endeavor — and eventually to the passage of AB 436 , a bill that legalizes cruising across California and repeals cities’ authority to individually outlaw the activity. The bill, signed into law last month by Gov. Gavin Newsom, also lifted a ban on vehicles that have any parts extending below the bottom of the rims.

For some in the lowrider community, the law — which goes into effect Jan. 1 — is a recognition of both their artistic expression and a car culture that for years has been outlawed.

Now a bit older, wiser and more organized, the same lowrider owners who in the 1980s and ’90s kept one eye on their rearview mirrors on the lookout for cops helped push through legislation that acknowledges their art. Dozens of car clubs and community organizers pulled together across California, reaching out to state legislators. After years as outsiders, they flexed their newfound political muscle.

Shiny classic cars are seen at night in a parking lot in the glow of light posts.

“We weren’t taking ‘no’ for an answer,” Arellano said.

When she found out the bill had been signed, she said, she broke down in tears. As president of the United Lowrider Coalition, she was key to the AB 436 effort.

She recalled how, after National City banned cruising in 1992, she and other car owners took to the side streets off Highland Avenue, but officials closed those areas too.

Juan “Spanky” Ramirez, president of the Los Angeles Lowrider Community, said that ever since the bans, car owners and local authorities had played “a cat and mouse game.” He recalled driving to a clandestine cruise night only to see a line of tow trucks nearby, ready to remove any car that was found not to be “street legal.”

In 1974, Los Angeles officials attempted to get cruising under control on Van Nuys Boulevard by banning parking and turning the San Fernando Valley thoroughfare into a one-way street.

Spectators use their phones to photograph passing lowriders on a city street.

In 1982, the state Legislature gave cities the authority to ban cruising outright.

Critics said cruising interfered with local businesses, wasted law enforcement resources, impeded traffic and caused pollution and “undesirable noise levels.” Opponents continue to maintain that the activity is connected to crime. In opposing the recently passed legislation, the Peace Officers Research Assn., a federation of law enforcement agencies, argued that cruising is linked to narcotics, DUIs, assaults and gang violence.

The association did not respond to questions from The Times about data to back up that argument. In a statement, Brian R. Marvel, president of PORAC, said the organization opposed the bill because “one size does not fit all.”

“These decisions are best made at the local level rather than dictated from the state capital,” the statement read. “Giving local leaders the flexibility to work directly with their police department and community allows them to develop sensible, tailored solutions based on their community’s unique circumstances and priorities.”

The California Contract Cities Assn., which represents 85 cities that contract for public services, argued to lawmakers that cruising is “a public safety issue in many of our member cities.”

“The activity can create traffic control and congestion problems that then generate major logistical challenges,” the agency maintained .

Opponents also have tried to link cruise nights to “street takeovers” — the illegal and sometimes deadly events in which cars commandeer an intersection or street, burning rubber and driving at high speeds with spectators close by.

Lowriders — customized cars modified to drive as close to the ground as possible, sometimes with the help of lowered suspensions or hydraulics — have been around since the 1940s. The customized cars, which became popular with Chicano youths, often include detailed paint jobs. Those outfitted with hydraulics might ride down the street on cruise night, then lift one corner up with the flip of a switch or bounce down the street to the delight of spectators.

Although hot rods were made popular in the 1970s because of movies such as “American Graffiti” and muscle cars became a staple on Southern California streets, lowriders were designed to be low and slow. Years later, the cars have been acknowledged as rolling works of art, appearing in exhibitions at Paris’ Louvre Museum and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

Fans of lowriders say they’re more than a creative outlet, though. They’re a way of life.

Men in long jackets, loose dress pants and hats with feathers stand outside vintage cars with a bring in the background.

Arellano would meet other lowrider owners on cruise nights, making lasting friends. She got involved in one of the first women’s car clubs in San Diego, the Specials. So when cruising was banned, she felt her community was being erased.

The cars are a point of pride, she said, with owners investing thousands of dollars — sometimes hundreds of thousands — to refurbish and transform them. Some work for months or years detailing their prized possessions. In some families, the cars are passed on for younger generations to care for, maintain and make their own.

With bans being enforced in cities across the state, Arellano said, lowrider owners often couldn’t drive down the streets of their own communities.

David Polanco, 54, recalled the determination and defiance of those days.

He started cruising in the 1970s with his older siblings. When the bans were first enacted and streets were blocked during cruising nights, he said, car clubs and lowrider owners continued to meet up. Drivers just kept an eye out for police or tow trucks. If cruise events were not an option, then car shows in parking lots and meet-ups were planned.

In the end, the bans were unable to stomp out cruising.

“If anything, the lowrider culture grew,” said Polanco, now president of the United Lowrider Council of San Jose and president of the Tu Sabes car club.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a resurgence in cruising. With health officials asking people to avoid public gatherings and practice social distancing, car club members felt cruising was a logical solution: Drivers could stay in their cars and adhere to protocols, while spectators on the street — safely spaced apart — could enjoy the show.

Yet car clubs across the state began to get pushback from local officials, Arellano said. Once again, cruising bans were cited to put an end to such events. That motivated groups — including the United Lowrider Coalition — to organize and push for AB 436.

Ramirez said that, although he is excited about the new law, he’s in wait-and-see mode. The bans, he said, weren’t just about cruising but also about racial profiling. They provided an excuse, he said, for pulling over drivers to look for other infractions.

He now wonders if police will find other reasons to pull over lowriders.

“We still have to see how is this going to roll out,” he said.

Polanco said the bans have had a chilling effect that has to be overcome. They effectively isolated members from the community, he said, noting that he gave up cruising when he became a father because he couldn’t afford the risk of traffic tickets. And even though car clubs would organize community events, such as food and toy drives, animosity and distrust stemming from cruising bans meant that many of them did so without connecting with local officials and law enforcement.

More recently, however, car clubs have worked with local police and city officials, Polanco said. They’re learning how to navigate the system and advocate not just for lowriders but also for the wider community.

Hydraulics cause lowriders to bounce from side to side on a city street at night.

The Los Angeles Lowrider Community has met with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department and the California Highway Patrol to discuss how car clubs and owners can work with officials when the cruising law goes into effect, Ramirez said, and the meetings have been productive.

“We’re getting out there doing these things, instead of being the negative stereotype,” he said. “We could do so much more with the city, [instead of] bumping heads.”

Lowrider events are now more family-oriented, Ramirez said. Car clubs are involved more in school, church and fundraising events.

“Now that we’re getting older,” he said, “we have businesses; people have changed their lives and they’re teachers, fathers.”

He said lowrider clubs in some jurisdictions work with law enforcement to make sure street takeovers are discouraged at their events.

“We all want a safe family environment to cruise in, so we have a responsibility to that,” Polanco said. “I have my granddaughter and my mom with me. I don’t want some guy to pull a gun, or drinking and driving.”

He might still be driving the same 1969 azure Chevelle he was riding in when he cruised as a teenager, but the scene has changed.

“Things have evolved,” Polanco said

For Arellano — who has lived the lowrider lifestyle since she was a teenager and bought a 1964 Impala for $67 — the passage of AB 436 was a dream come true.

Once on the fringes, lowrider owners are now organized, legally protected and recognized for their art.

“This is history,” she said, “knowing that they support your culture, the lowrider culture.”

Cruise Night Hero

Vintage auto ad inspired show boards and gear.

Be a cruise night hero, tired of the same old templated show boards.

I create custom show boards that are as much of a piece of art as your car is. Inspired by vintage auto ads these showboards stand out anywhere. Perfect for auctions, car shows, your favorite weekly cruise night, or hanging in your man cave.

It’s all about details - a ‘65 Mustang has a different style than my ‘85 Volkswagen. Shouldn’t your show board have the style to reflect your car?

Michael in side view mirror of his 85 GTI

Unlike other showboard companies that are printers and also design, I’m a designer that will print for you. You’ll see the difference in design quality and details.

By day I’m a freelance Creative Director supporting mission-driven organizations. I’ve been designing and leading creative teams for two decades and love it.

I was raised with a passion for cars and racing, at night you’ll find me at cruise nights, tinkering, or dreaming about cars. I am fascinated with vintage ads and writing. Back in 1985, my father purchased a VW GTI, proudly displaying the two-page ad in our garage. It remained there for over 30 years, until the vibrant red hues faded, and the car became mine. Now, as the owner of that beloved GTI, I recreated the ad to feature myself driving the car and crafted my own unique show board. Since then, I have been continuously creating these displays, fueled by my passion for cars and design.

Check out my other design portfolio

Sounds cool right?

No idea is too big, anything you can think of can be done. Reach out if you have any questions, want to get your showboard started, or have specific requests.

Thank you! I’ll reach out to you soon.

Mustang Club of Greater Kansas City

Ownership isn't required, love of the Ford Mustang is....

cruise night racing

The Mustang Club of Greater Kansas City, Inc., (formerly the Vintage Mustang Club of Kansas City) is a non-profit Kansas corporation dedicated to the preservation, restoration and enjoyment of the Ford Mustang and Shelby Mustang automobiles. Our club recognizes Mustangs of all model years in every state of repair.

What we are all about…

Our club members enjoy everything Mustang, from the old to the new; every body style is represented in the club. Our activities start with our monthly meetings where we discuss the business of the club such as our  Annual Show ,  Other Shows ,  Cruise Nights ,  Social Events , and  Racing Events around the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Of course, no gathering would be complete without some talk of the latest restoration and tech projects or parts gathering missions associated with our hobby. Our meetings normally last at least an hour after our business is conducted, while we meet in the parking lot talking about and admiring each others cars…

General meetings of the Mustang Club of Greater Kansas City are held at 5:00 PM on the third Sunday of each month with exceptions for our Pool Party in July, Annual Picnic in September, and Christmas Party in December. The meetings are held at Bristol Hill United Methodist Church, 4826 County Line Road, Kansas City, KS 66106. For a complete list of meeting dates, see the  Club Calendar .

Why join a club?

Granted, clubs aren’t for everyone, but why drive alone? Our club is full of wonderful people who love Mustangs just as much as you do! When you join a club, you get to take advantage of years of networking and experience by other members that are invaluable tools to broaden one’s knowledge and love for our cars. We also have events that are exclusively put on for our members such as our annual Christmas Party and other fun events.  The people add an extra dimension to our hobby that simply driving a car cannot give. Take the opportunity to make friends and join us today! Not convinced? Surf this site and see the fun you’re missing!

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

Pennsylvania primary replay: Trump, Biden clinch victory; Casey and McCormick will compete for Senate

All eyes were on Pennsylvania on Tuesday as the key swing state held pivotal elections that could send a clear message for November's race for the White House.

While former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden already locked down their respective party nominations, they both swiftly won the Republican and Democratic primaries in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, garnering even more support.

Sen. Bob Casey, D-Penn., and David McCormick, a businessman, won the Democratic and Republican Senate primaries, and they'll face off in the fall in what's expected to be a close race.

Rep. Summer Lee, D-Penn., won a tough primary battle in the state's 12th congressional district against Bhavini Patel, a member of the Edgewood Borough Council in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

But those weren't the only tight races on Tuesday. Here's a recap of the USA TODAY Network's live coverage of the latest primaries.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

Eugene DePasquale secures Democratic bid for attorney general

Eugene DePasquale, the former state auditor general, beat a crowded field of opponents to win the Democratic primary for the open attorney general seat. He will face Republican David Sunday in what’s expected to be competitive general election race.

- Karissa Waddick

David Sunday wins GOP attorney general primary

David Sunday, a York County district attorney, beat state house member Craig Williams in the Republican primary. He’s set to face off against Democrat Eugene DePasquale in the November election.

Republican Ryan McKenzie wins primary in Pennsylvania's 7th District

Ryan McKenzie won the GOP primary to challenge Democratic Rep. Susan Wild for the Lehigh, Pennsylvania, area congressional seat in November. The seat in the state’s 7th District is a top target for Republicans in November.

-Karissa Waddick

Janelle Stelson to face GOP Rep. Scott Perry in PA’s 10th District

Democrat Janelle Stelson will challenge Republican Rep. Scott Perry for Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional seat in November. Stelson beat five Democratic competitors in the primary.

A former news anchor, Stelson is aiming to win over independents and moderate conservatives in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, district to defeat Perry in the general election. The Cook Political Report has labeled the race as leaning in Perry’s favor.

Rep. Summer Lee fights off challenger in PA’s 12th District

Democratic Rep. Summer Lee beat Bhavini Patel in the primary for the state’s 12th district. Her win comes as a potential positive sign for other progressives in Congress who are facing challenges from moderate Democrats over their opposition to additional U.S. military aid for Israel.

Lee’s advocacy for a ceasefire in Gaza became a central theme of the campaign. Her opponent argued that Lee’s criticism of Israel hurt Biden’s reelection efforts. But those arguments ultimately did not win over voters.

Moderate Republican Brian Fitzpatrick fends off challenger in GOP race for 1st District

Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick defeated right-wing challenger Mark Houck in the Bucks County congressional primary, according to a call by the Associated Press.

The race was viewed as a test of how important the issue of abortion could be for the Republican Party’s base in 2024. Fitzpatrick is a widely regarded as a moderate Republican. Houck advocated for a near total ban on abortions, while Fitzpatrick has called for compromise.

– Karissa Waddick

David McCormick clinches GOP primary for closely watched Senate seat

David McCormick won the Republican nomination for Senate in Pennsylvania. He ran unopposed in the race and will face incumbent Sen. Bob Casey in the general election.

– Karissa Waddick

Donald Trump, Joe Biden lock down Republican and Democratic primaries

Donald Trump and Joe Biden won their respective party primaries in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, picking up dozens of additional delegates as they both seek a second term in the White House.

– Marina Pitofsky

Sen. Bob Casey wins Democratic Senate  primary

Longtime Democratic Sen. Bob Casey won his party’s nomination for the U.S. Senate, after not facing any competition in the race. He will face Republican David McCormick in what’s expected to be a competitive, high dollar general election battle,

Where can I find Pennsylvania primary results?

Keep up with the latest results from the Keystone State here:

More: Pennsylvania Statewide and Presidential Primary Results

Where are Biden and Trump?

Neither Joe Biden nor Donald Trump campaigned in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, despite it being a major general election target for both candidates.

Instead, Trump appeared in a New York City courtroom for the second day of witness testimony in his hush money trial. And Biden delivered a speech in Tampa, Florida , attempting to tie Trump to the southern state’s law banning abortion after about six weeks of pregnancy.

Both candidates traveled to Pennsylvania last week for major campaign stops ahead of the primary.

– Karissa Waddick

Is Dean Phillips on the Pennsylvania ballot?

Yes – but the Minnesota congressman is no longer running against Joe Biden for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Phillips, the former chair of the Talenti gelato empire, suspended his longshot bid against Biden in early March after suffering a string of double-digit defeats.

Pennsylvania was in the process of printing its primary ballots at the time he dropped out.

Will Pennsylvania Democrats vote “uncommitted” over Israel-Gaza war?

Pennsylvania does not have an “uncommitted” option on its presidential primary ballot like other states. But that isn’t likely to stop Democrats who plan to cast a protest vote opposing Joe Biden’s handling of the Israel and Hamas war.

The group Uncommitted PA is encouraging Democrats to write-in “uncommitted” on their ballot to advocate for an immediate ceasefire in the war. However, it may be difficult to gauge the impact of the effort. The state election office is unlikely to report a tally of the write-in votes.

Will Pennsylvania Democrats vote “uncommitted” over Gaza war?

Donald trump endorsed david mccormick in pennsylvania senate primary.

Before he entered the courtroom for his New York hush money trial on Tuesday, Trump urged voters to the polls in Pennsylvania.

Trump supported GOP Senate candidate David McCormick in his campaign to unseat Democratic Sen. Bob Casey.

“It’s very important to let them that we’re coming on Nov. 5, we’re coming big,” Trump said. “Pennsylvania get out and vote.”

Polling shows Trump and Biden in virtual tie

With less than seven months until the general election, a RealClearPolitics average of national polls shows the presidential race between Joe Biden and Donald Trump in a dead heat.

The average, calculated based on polls published between mid-March and mid-April, has Trump as 44.6% and Biden at 44.4%. The margin of error of +/- 0.2 is equal to the gap between the two candidates.

Who is Janelle Stelson?

Janelle Stelson, a former new anchor, is running as a Democrat in the state's 10th Congressional District. Her name recognition means she's looking like the frontrunner in the race, though she was also a longtime registered Republican who switched her registration last year.

Moderate Republican fights to keep seat as GOP battles over abortion

In Pennsylvania’s 1 st  Congressional District, longtime Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick is being challenged on his right flank by a candidate who believes abortions should be banned in nearly all circumstances — including in cases of rape and incest.

Mark Houck, Fitzpatrick’s opponent, was acquitted of criminal charges stemming from an altercation at an abortion clinic.  The incident reportedly  inspired him  to run for public office. A devout Catholic, Houck co-founded the men's religious group The King's Men. He's worked as an author, motivational speaker and human resources manager.

Fitzpatrick is a moderate Republican. He is one of a handful of Republican representatives serving in districts that Biden won in 2020.

The primary race could demonstrate just how important the  issue of abortion  is for the Republican Party’s base.

Donald Trump and Joe Biden aren't the only candidates competing in 2024

The rematch between Joe Biden and President Donald Trump is top of mind for most voters across the country this election season. But down-ballot races – including congressional and state-level races – are also sure to have a major impact.

And some already are.

In a competitive special election for a state house seat in deep-red Alabama last month, Democrat Marilyn Lands won  by nearly 25-points . Lands made abortion and in-vitro fertilization access a central point of her campaign. Her win was seen as a testament to the salience of those issues for voters in 2024.

Rep. Summer Lee faces primary challenger over Israel-Hamas war

A Democratic primary for Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional District could reveal just how salient the Israel and Hamas war is for Democratic voters – particularly in swing areas of the country.

First-term progressive Rep. Summer Lee, who was among the early advocates calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, is facing a primary challenge from moderate Bhavini Patel over her opposition to the war.

Patel, a 29-year-old municipal council member, has framed the incumbent's criticism of Israel as detrimental to Biden’s re-election efforts

Malcolm Kenyatta and Mark Pinsley fight to compete against Tim DeFoor

State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta and Lehigh County Controller Mark Pinsley are the two Democrats competing to face off against Pennsylvania's Auditor General Tim DeFoor.

Kenyatta previously ran for Senate in Pennsylvania, finishing third in the primary now-Sen. John Fetterman won in 2022.

How many delegates does Joe Biden have?

Joe Biden has picked up 3,078 delegates as he seeks another term in the White House. He needed 1,968 to clinch the Democratic nomination.

Biden is widely expected to win the Democratic primary in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, which would grant him 159 additional delegates.

When are the 2024 conventions?

The Republican Convention will run from July 15-18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The Democratic Convention will take place a month later, from August 19-22, in Chicago, Illinois.

Which states haven’t held primaries yet?

While the results of the Republican and Democratic presidential primaries are all but set, a number of states still haven’t voted in either party’s race. Those states include Indiana, Maryland, Nebraska, West Virginia, Kentucky, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota. The District of Columbia held it’s GOP primary in March, but Democrats in the territory will cast their ballots in June.

Can I vote in Pennsylvania?

First-time voters or individuals who are casting a ballot in a new precinct will need to show identification, according to the Pennsylvania Department of State.

Acceptable identification includes a driver's license, student ID, a firearm permit, a current paycheck and more.

It is a closed primary , meaning that only voters who are registered Democratic or Republican may vote on candidates in their respective parties.

– Teresa Boeckel

Brian Fitzpatrick is being challenged on his right flank by Mark Houk, a candidate who believes abortions should be banned in nearly all circumstances – including in cases of rape and incest.  The primary race could demonstrate just how important the issue of abortion is for the Republican Party’s base.
  • 7th District: Three Republicans – Kevin Dellicker, Ryan Mackenzie and Maria Montero – are competing to take on Democratic Rep. Susan Wild. Her seat is a top target for the GOP in November.
  • 10th District: Six Democrats are vying for the Democratic nomination to challenge GOP Rep. Scott Perry in the November election. Perry was a former chair of the Freedom Caucus, one of the most conservative factions of the Republican Party and was a key figure in efforts to  overturn the results  of the 2020 election. Democrats see an opportunity to flip the seat in the general election.
  • 12th District: Bhavini Patel is running against incumbent Rep. Summer Lee with a message centered on the Israel and Hamas war. Patel has cast herself as a more moderate, pro-Israel candidate and has criticized Lee for her opposition to providing U.S. military aid to Israel.

Who is running for Pennsylvania Attorney General?

Five Democrats and two Republicans are also battling for the open state attorney general position , once held by Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro. Michelle Henry, who is completing the remainder of Shapiro’s term since he was elected governor in 2022, is not running for the position.

Candidates in the Democratic primary include Eugene DePasquale, Keir Bradford-Grey, Joe Khan, Jared Solomon and Jack Stollsteimer.

On the Republican side, state house member Craig Williams is facing off against York County District Attorney Dave Sunday.

− Karissa Waddick

Can independents vote in primaries in Pennsylvania?

No, only registered Republicans and Democrats can cast their ballots in their party primaries. However, independent voters can vote on ballot questions.

− Marina Pitofsky

How many delegates does Donald Trump have?

Donald Trump has picked up 1,915 delegates as he seeks another term in office. He needed 1,215 delegates to lock down the 2024 Republican nomination.

The former president is expected to pick up 67 delegates in Pennsylvania's GOP primary on Tuesday.

Abortion fight plays out in Pennsylvania attorney general election

Abortion has roiled down-ballot races across the country, and Pennsylvania is no exception. Reproductive rights have been a major topic in the attorney general’s race.

All five Democratic candidates for attorney general have committed to protecting the right to abortion and access to FDA-approved medications such as  mifepristone . Meanwhile, the Republican candidates have said that they do not believe the state constitution guarantees the right to an abortion.

As attorney general, both sides would leave the issue for the state legislature to decide.

What time do the polls close in Pennsylvania?

Polls close in Pennsylvania at 8 p.m. ET. Anyone in line by 8 p.m. can vote.

Absentee and mail-in ballots also must be returned and received by election officials by 8 p.m.
