Travel to the South Pacific: Visitors to French Polynesia and Tahiti should have a valid passport, a return airline ticket, and proof of sufficient funds for a stay. When visiting Fiji, make sure you have a passport that is valid for 6 months beyond your planned stay, plus a return airline ticket. To visit the South Pacific islands, you won’t need a visa if you plan to stay for less than 30 days. You will need a passport that is valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay and scheduled return. If you plan to island hop, onward tickets are also sufficient to show that you don’t plan to stay forever.

South pacific travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

What’s the weather like in the South Pacific?

The South Pacific islands have a tropical climate with only two seasons: a wet season from November to April and a dry season from May to October.

The weather is hot all year round, though it's hotter and stickier in the wet season and tropical cyclones and typhoons can occur.

The dry season sees clearer skies and cooler temperatures, though daytime highs rarely dip below the low 60s (F).

The water temperatures don't fluctuate much, with average temperatures lingering between a pleasant 81°F and 84°F.

When is the best time to visit the South Pacific?

The most popular time to visit the South Pacific is in the dry season from May to October when skies are clear and humidity is low.

However, these months also see the biggest influx of tourists so expect busier beaches and higher prices for things like accommodation.

The wet season is the quietest time in the South Pacific and if you don't mind hotter, stickier and wetter weather, it can be a great time to enjoy the islands in their most idyllic state.

What do I pack for the South Pacific?

The South Pacific region experiences tropical weather, so packing sandals, sunscreen and plenty of swimwear is a must. Because of the high temperatures and often humid conditions (depending on the time of year), packing lightweight, breathable clothing (think linen or cotton) is also a good idea. You might also want to consider packing comfortable walking shoes for exploring the islands and insect repellant for those pesky tropical bugs. 

What is the internet access like in the South Pacific?

While the South Pacific is largely remote as a region (the only way to get there from neighboring countries is to fly), it's fairly connected with great internet access across Samoa, the Cook Islands, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and Fiji. However, there are some exceptions as each island boasts lush tropical rainforests that can interfere with your mobile coverage. Having said that, if you stick to the populated areas, most hotels and restaurants should have wifi for you to connect to. 

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Our trip to New Zealand was amazing. The team at Zicasso’s tour company was everything I could have hoped for. From the moment we first spoke, I knew we were in the right hands. Our travel agent spent a great deal of time and attention on our trip goals, who we were as travelers, and the interests of each family member. After several discussions, she completely and wholeheartedly designed a trip around us, taking into account our preferences, coupled with her travel expertise. I was especially impressed and grateful for her local expertise, her attention to detail, and the fact that she and her team routinely visit the accommodations and experiences they recommend. Even during the planning, she would make small adjustments based on local conditions. As an example, she changed an accommodation in Queenstown based on feedback that there was noisy construction nearby. In addition to speaking constantly during the planning process, it was reassuring and so convenient to have constant access to the team during the trip. They checked in with us often and were immediately available as small issues came up. As an example, when a helicopter ride was canceled due to inclement weather, they quickly rearranged some activities so we could go on the ride later in the week. Or when we decided to skip a hike and head to Queenstown earlier than expected, they quickly made a recommendation for a delightful lunch on the way and made sure the accommodation would be ready earlier. Moreover, knowing I was traveling with three teenagers, our travel agent suggested accommodations that were luxurious yet comfortable, with very convenient amenities like laundry! She also recommended that being from America, I have a driver instead of attempting to drive myself. She was right!!!! Their passion and enthusiasm for their travel services were unparalleled and contagious, setting the stage for a seamless, relaxed, comfortable, exciting adventure.

A revival of Indigenous languages and cultures permeates the South Pacific islands, though English and French are commonly spoken.

Over-water-villa comfort, the reef mere steps from your “front door,” breakfast arriving by canoe – life at a luxury South Pacific resort takes little getting used to. These exotic islands are split into two groups: the Polynesian islands and the Melanesian islands. The most famous Polynesian islands are those of French Polynesia – in particular, Tahiti and Bora Bora. Five archipelagoes here offer over-water bungalows, sharks and rays, waterfalls and atolls. Closer to Chile – and offering an interesting mix of Polynesian and South American cultures – the equally famous Rapa Nui, a.k.a. Easter Island, dazzles with its mysterious stone faces, moai statues carved from rock. The untouristed Samoa and American Samoa are noted for surfing, snorkeling and surfing, as is traditional Tonga, renowned for the large pods of humpback whales that congregate here in from July to October. And at Rarotonga and the Cook Islands, more beaches await, as does hiking, stone-temple exploration and more. The Melanesian island group is headlined by fabulous Fiji, where outdoor adventure and amazing diving are counterbalanced with relaxing resort opulence. Vanuatu offers volcanoes and waterfalls perfect for hiking, and incredible shipwrecks and coral gardens for diving. Its outer islands offer an abundance of upscale resorts. A double barrier reef draws watersports and windsports enthusiasts to New Caledonia, as do its exclusive resorts, particularly those on the outlying islands. Second World War sites are the ticket at the Solomon Islands, which is also noted for ecotourism adventure in the Marovo lagoon, the largest saltwater lagoon in the world.
