Budget Guide To Zimbabwe

Grand escapades’ budget guide to zimbabwe – just as expensive as it can get….

Road crossing Matopos or Matobo National Park, Zimbabwe, Africa

Type Of Travel

We did a 3 week Self-Drive Safari through Zimbabwe’s National Parks. It was an expensive trip, no beating around the bush!

Itinerary & Time Of The Visit

In July 2012, after traveling 5.700 kilometers in three weeks in cars, boats and even a canoe, we got a bit of a feel what Zimbabwe is like, at least from a tourist’s perspective…

  • Starting in Johannesburg in a rented car, driving straight to Beitbridge & crossing into Zimbabwe,
  • Bulawayo & Matobo National Park,
  • Hwange National Park (Main Camp & Sinamatella Camp),
  • Victoria Falls (only Zimbabwe),
  • Ferry from Mlibizi to Kariba on Lake Kariba,
  • Canoe Safari in Mana Pools National Park,
  • Harare (as a stop-over),
  • Gweru & Antelope Park,
  • Masvingo & Great Zimbabwe,
  • Gonarezhou National Park (Chilojo Cliffs),
  • And last but not least driving up north to Mutare to drop Heidi & Jason at the Mozambique Border,
  • Back to Johannesburg via Beitbridge.

Global Budget

Zimbabwe is a very expensive African destination, if you decide to make the most of its highlights. The two biggest expenses were renting a 4WD and the 4 day canoe safari on the Zambezi. All the fun stuff around Victoria Falls or Antelope Park adds to the bill.

First Time Camping… Mlibizi Zambezi Resort, on the Shores of Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe, Africa

And it was a stiff one! In 22 days we spent in total 4.400 USD per person, not including the intercontinental flight.

Hostels & Hotels

There is good news, though… In all major cities, you can find excellent Backpacker Hostels offering dorms and cheap rooms, plus kitchen facilities and good communal areas. They are much better value and even more comfortable than mid-range hotels. Expect to pay 40 to 45 USD for a double room.

Restaurants & Food

Restaurants in Zimbabwe are expensive as well: 6 to 12 USD for a breakfast, and 15 to 30 USD for a dinner in a midrange restaurant. Even the ubiquitous fast food (Chicken-Inn / Pizza Inn / Cream-Inn) features European / American price levels, with a regular Cheeseburger selling for 3.5 USD!

Market in Bulawayo…

Drinks & Going Out

We have no detailed information on this, since we certainly did not party. Drinks are included in our Restaurants & Food Budget.

Of course the 4WD was the main budget killer, but there is no public transport to and inside the national parks. A smaller / cheaper car might do, but if you want to get to the more remote bits in Hwange and Matobo National Park, a 4WD is strongly advised. For Mana Pools and Gonarezhou National Park, it is simply a must. On the other hand renting the Toyota Hilux with a rooftop tent can help you seriously reducing your budget for sleeping and eating. To bring down costs even further, fill her up! The car can be equipped with two rooftop tents and easily seats four people. And this is what we did. Via the Lonely Planet ThornTree Forum, we found fellow travelers for the entire trip to share part of the 150 USD per day for the jeep. However, we were lucky, since only very few people travel to Zimbabwe.

Tours & Activities

National park fees are also extremely moderate, at least compared to other African countries like Tanzania. Entrance fees are generally 20 USD per person plus 10 USD for the car, no matter how long you stay. Camping fees in the national parks range from 8 to 15 USD per person per night, but climb to 25 to 50 USD for the “Wilderness Campsites” and reach 200 USD in Chitake / Mana Pools. Indeed!

The Canoe Safari in Mana Pools with was another big chunk, with 990 USD in total per person for 4 days / 3 nights. Actually our first choice in Mana Pools was the most secluded campsite in Chitake, but it was booked. Despite the hefty 200 USD a night! Nevertheless, we have no regrets, the canoe safari was one of the very special experiences we had in Zimbabwe and actually traveling in Africa.

Reduce Costs?

How come one of the poorest nations on this planet, where the economy and the tourism industry collapsed in the last decade, can be that expensive for visitors? Well, all of the above expenses are not a must. Of course you could travel the country quite differently. The question is how long it would take you and especially what you would miss out, but on the other hand gain.

Zimbabwe is not the poorest nation in the world.Get it right

Thank you for your message! We wrote: “How come one of the poorest nations on this planet…” Let’s look at facts: Zimbabwe is, based on GDP per Capita, the second poorest nation on earth (source: Global Finance Magazine – 428,91 USD) Zimbabwe is as well the country with the lowest life expectancy with only 37 years! So we got it right… I am surprised by your harsh tone… Zimbabwe was indeed a rich country, but Mugabe simply annihilated the economy Cheers, Gilles

Cost of living and prices in Zimbabwe, prices of food, rent, shopping, etc 🇿🇼 Updated Jul 2023

Zimbabwe, located in Eastern Africa, is bordered by Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, and Zambia. Covering an area of 390,580 square kilometers, Zimbabwe has a population of 11,651,858 with a population density of 29.83 people per square kilometer. The official languages spoken in Zimbabwe are English, Shona, and Northern Ndebele. Zimbabwe has a GDP of $10,480,000,000 with a GDP per capita of $899. The country's official currency is the United States dollar, along with other currencies such as the Botswana pula, British pound, and South African rand. Despite its struggling economy, Zimbabwe is still rich in natural resources and has a growing tourism industry, attracting visitors to its stunning national parks and historic landmarks. Cost of living in Zimbabwe is relatively affordable, making it an attractive destination for expats and retirees looking for a slower pace of life at a lower cost. With easy access to neighboring countries and a rich cultural heritage, Zimbabwe offers a unique blend of adventure and relaxation. Despite its challenges, Zimbabwe remains resilient and welcoming to visitors from all over the world.

Cost of Living Estimate in Zimbabwe

Total cost of living in Zimbabwe for two person with average consumption for one month will be 735.32 USD , no rent price included. Click here to calculate cost-of-living estimate in Zimbabwe

Restaurants prices

Zimbabwe has a diverse range of restaurants and eating options that cater to all tastes and budgets. Visitors can enjoy traditional Zimbabwean cuisine, as well as international dishes, at a variety of dining establishments throughout the country. Some popular dishes include sadza, a maize porridge, and muriwo une dovi, a vegetable and peanut butter stew, which can be found at many local restaurants.

For those looking for a more upscale dining experience, there are a number of fine dining restaurants in the major cities of Zimbabwe. These restaurants offer a range of international cuisine, including Italian, French, and Asian fusion. Many of these restaurants source their ingredients locally, providing visitors with a taste of Zimbabwean produce and flavors. Zimbabwe also boasts a number of fast food chains and street food vendors, offering quick and convenient options for those on the go.

Markets prices

Zimbabwe's market prices have shown volatility in recent years due to economic challenges, but there are also opportunities for growth and stabilization. The country's inflation rate has been a major factor in determining market prices, with spikes leading to hyperinflation and the devaluation of the currency. Despite this, Zimbabwe has a diverse economy with many sectors contributing to market prices, including agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. The government has also made efforts to stabilize the market by introducing policies to control inflation and encourage foreign investment.

One major challenge to market prices in Zimbabwe is the prevalence of the black market, where goods and services are sold outside of official channels. This can have a significant impact on the prices of goods, with the black market often setting prices higher than the official market due to scarcity or demand. However, the government has also recognized the potential benefits of the informal economy and has made efforts to formalize it, allowing informal traders to register their businesses and pay taxes. With a greater emphasis on formalizing the economy and stabilizing inflation, Zimbabwe has the potential to see more consistent and predictable market prices in the coming years.

Transportation prices

Zimbabwe offers a variety of transportation options for travelers. The most popular mode of transportation is the kombi, a minibus that operates like a shared taxi. Kombis are affordable and readily available, making them a convenient option for getting around the country. However, they may be overcrowded and not always the safest option, so travelers should exercise caution.

For those seeking a more comfortable and private option, hire cars are also available in Zimbabwe. Many rental companies offer a range of vehicles to suit different needs and budgets, from economy cars to luxury SUVs. It's important to note that the roads in Zimbabwe can be in poor condition and may require a 4x4 vehicle to navigate the terrain. Additionally, tourists should be aware that driving in Zimbabwe can be challenging, with erratic drivers and limited road signage. Nevertheless, self-driving allows for greater flexibility and independence when exploring the country.

Utilities Per Month prices

When traveling to Zimbabwe, it's important to note that the cost of utilities may vary depending on the location and the time of year. Generally, the cost of electricity, water, and gas is relatively affordable compared to other developed countries. However, it's important to keep in mind that power outages are a common occurrence in Zimbabwe, so it's always a good idea to have a backup plan just in case. Many hotels and lodges have generators that can be used during blackouts, but it's always best to check before booking to ensure that you won't be caught off guard.

Another aspect of utilities in Zimbabwe that may be of interest to travelers is the use of firewood and charcoal for cooking and heating in some rural areas. This is something that visitors may encounter if they venture out of the cities and into more remote locations. While it may be a cultural experience to cook over an open flame, it's important to remember that burning wood and charcoal contributes to deforestation and air pollution. Some lodges and eco-friendly accommodations have alternative cooking solutions that use cleaner fuel sources, so it's worth considering these options if you're looking to minimize your environmental impact while traveling in Zimbabwe.

Sports And Leisure prices

As a country that has produced some of the greatest athletes in Africa, sports is an integral part of Zimbabwe’s culture. Cricket and football are the most popular team sports, with Zimbabwe’s national cricket team being a member of the International Cricket Council. Visitors can also try their hand at golfing, horse racing, and polo. If adventure sports are more your speed, white-water rafting on the Zambezi River, bungee jumping, and zip lining are all options. For those who prefer a more leisurely pace, a sunset cruise on the mighty Zambezi river offers a stunning view of the African sunset.

Aside from sports, leisure activities in Zimbabwe are abundant. The country boasts beautiful natural landscapes with national parks and reserves such as Hwange National Park and Victoria Falls National Park. Visitors can enjoy game drives and safari tours and observe the ‘big five’ animals in their natural habitat. For a unique cultural experience, there are traditional dance shows, craft markets, and food tours where you can taste the local cuisine. Zimbabwe is also a great destination for birdwatchers, with over 670 species of birds found in the country. With plenty of exciting sports and leisure activities to choose from, Zimbabwe truly has something for everyone.

Salaries And Financing prices

Salaries and Financing in Zimbabwe can vary greatly depending on the industry and location. While the country has experienced economic struggles in recent years, many industries are still thriving, leaving room for high-paying positions. The city of Harare, for example, has a bustling financial sector with opportunities for those experienced in banking and finance.

When it comes to financing, it's important to note that Zimbabwe operates on a multi-currency system, with the United States dollar and South African rand being commonly used alongside the local currency, the Zimbabwean dollar. It's important to exchange your currency at a reputable location to ensure you receive a fair rate. Additionally, credit and debit cards are not widely accepted in many parts of the country, so it's advisable to carry cash for transactions and purchases.

Childcare prices

Childcare prices in Zimbabwe can vary greatly depending on the type of childcare provider. Many parents opt to enroll their children in schools for early childhood education, which can provide a structured learning environment and socialization opportunities. However, private schools may come with a higher price tag than public schools. Kindergartens are also a popular choice for Zimbabwean families, as they provide a more relaxed and play-based learning environment for young children. The cost of Kindergartens can also vary depending on location and the facilities offered.

Despite the variance in price, many families in Zimbabwe struggle to afford childcare expenses. This can be especially true in rural areas where there may be fewer options for childcare. Thus, some families resort to informal arrangements with friends or family to care for their children while they work. Overall, childcare costs are a significant expense for many Zimbabwean households, but access to quality education and childcare is essential for children's development and success.

Clothing And Shoes prices

Zimbabwe is a country where clothing and shoes prices can vary considerably depending on the brand and the quality. Generally, it is possible to find affordable options in street markets and small shops, while high-end stores offer top-quality products at more expensive prices. For those who are looking for a good deal, second-hand markets are a great option, where it is possible to purchase gently used clothing and shoes for a fraction of the original price.

If you are searching for a more comprehensive shopping experience, some of the larger shopping malls in Zimbabwe offer a wide variety of clothing and shoes stores, catering to different budgets and tastes. Here, visitors can find everything from local designers to international brands, with a range of styles and sizes available. Whether you are looking for everyday clothing or special occasion attire, there are plenty of options to choose from in Zimbabwe.

Rent Per Month prices

Short-term rentals and stay options in Zimbabwe are plentiful, offering a range of affordable and luxurious options to suit a variety of needs and budgets. Whether you are looking for a short-term apartment rental or a cozy bed and breakfast, Zimbabwe boasts a diverse range of accommodations to choose from.

With its stunning natural beauty and vibrant cultural scene, Zimbabwe is a popular destination for travelers seeking a unique and enriching experience. Many short-term rentals in Zimbabwe offer the perfect balance of comfort and convenience, providing easy access to the country's many attractions while also offering comfortable and well-equipped accommodation options. Whether you are looking for a centrally located apartment or a secluded retreat in the countryside, Zimbabwe has something to offer everyone.

Buy Apartment prices

There are several buying options available when it comes to real estate in Zimbabwe. One popular option is purchasing a residential property that can be used as your primary residence or a vacation home. Additionally, there are several opportunities for commercial real estate investments, such as purchasing a building for office space or retail use. Another option is to invest in undeveloped land to eventually build on or hold onto for future development.

When it comes to prices for real estate in Zimbabwe, they can vary depending on the location and size of the property. Some areas may have higher demand and therefore higher prices, while other areas may be more affordable. It's important to do your research and work with a reputable real estate agent who can help you find a property within your budget and desired location. Despite fluctuations in the real estate market, investing in property in Zimbabwe can provide a solid return on investment over time.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

You need a passport, visa, return ticket, and adequate funds to cover your intended stay in order to enter Zimbabwe. If you are traveling to Zimbabwe for tourism, business, or transit, you may obtain a visa at the airports or other border ports-of-entry. There is currently no option of getting a Zimbabwean tourist visa in advance through the Zimbabwean Embassy in Washington. You can expect to pay USD $30 for a 30-day/single-entry visa, USD $45 for a 45-day/double entry visa or USD $160 for a 12 month/ multiple-entry visa. Extensions of the 30-day and 45-day visas are possible and require visiting the Zimbabwe Immigration Office's public window. Travelers who intend to engage in any non-tourism related activity require a visa in advance of entry. Contact the  Department of Immigration of Zimbabwe  for further details and information on other types of visas and entry permits.

If you are planning to arrive to Zimbabwe via South Africa, please ensure that you have at least 6 blank pages in your passport. South Africa requires two clean, consecutive pages for each transit through South Africa. You will need two pages to transit South Africa in each direction, and two pages to enter Zimbabwe. South African officials take this requirement very seriously and will turn you around if you do not have sufficient pages. Additionally, South Africa has updated its laws regarding visiting or transiting the country with minor children. See the  country information page for South Africa  for details.

Zimbabwe has implemented measures to stem the flow of U.S. dollars from the country. Tourists and visitors who do not have bank accounts in Zimbabwe should:

  • Bring cash sufficient for the duration of your trip; especially $1 and $5 bills, which are used more often than local currency; the importation of any currency into Zimbabwe by travelers is not restricted. However, all travelers are encouraged to complete a Customs Declaration Form (Form 47) and declare the currency in their possession at the time of entry.
  • Note that the amount of currency you are allowed to possess when leaving Zimbabwe without authorization in the departure lounge of an airport or any other port is a total of USD $2,000 in any currency or combination of currencies or in bond notes, unless declared/documented upon entry;
  • Prepay expenses such as hotels, flights and tours by credit or debit card. Very few places accept international credit cards.

HIV/AIDS restrictions:  The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Zimbabwe.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction  and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

See the Department of State  Travel Advisory and Alerts for Zimbabwe.

Terrorism: Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

For more information, see our Terrorism page.

Crime:  Criminals operate in the vicinity of hotels, restaurants, and shopping areas of major cities and tourist areas such as Victoria Falls. The downtown sectors of Harare, and its high-density residential suburbs, are particularly high-crime areas.

While in Zimbabwe:

  • Always secure your possessions while in in public areas.
  • Avoid displaying or carrying unnecessary valuables and large sums of money.
  • Leave your passport and valuables in the hotel safety deposit box or room safe.

For your safety while driving/riding in a car:

  • Be alert for “smash and grabs,” where thieves break car windows while you are stopped at intersections and take things within reach.
  • Keep car doors locked and windows rolled up.
  • Put valuable things under car seats or in the trunk.
  • Leave sufficient room between cars to maneuver and drive away from danger.
  • If you are being followed, drive to the nearest police station or other protected public area for assistance.
  • Reduce your time at traffic lights at night by slowing in anticipation of the light change.
  • Be cautious of ploys to lure you out of your car and of drivers in vehicles without license plates who stop to render aid or cause minor accidents.
  • Drive to a well-lit and populated area before making repairs or exchanging information following an accident.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI   pages for information.

Demonstrations  can occur with little notice. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events.

  • Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent.
  • Avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
  • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.

Victims of Crime: U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance. Report crimes to police at the Harare Central Police Station, 777-777, and contact the U.S. Embassy at + 263 867 701 1000. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting the crime.

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • help you find accommodation and arrange flights home if you receive an emergency loan for repatriation
  • replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence may contact the Embassy for assistance.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some crimes are prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the Department of Justice website.

Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Zimbabwe can be severe, and convicted offenders can expect average jail sentences of three to seven years and heavy fines. Authorities may detain you for questioning if you don’t have your passport with you or for taking pictures of government buildings and police stations.

Fines for overstaying a visa can be over 1,000 USD and may involve time in jail. Visitors should pay careful attention to the authorized-until-date marked on their entry visa.

Arrest Notification : If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Photography :  Photographing the Munhumutapa Building, which houses the President’s offices, is punishable by a jail term and there is no provision for paying a fine.  It is not always apparent what the police deem sensitive, and they have detained people for photographing anything they view as sensitive, no matter how innocuous it may seem.  You should seriously consider the risks of taking pictures anywhere in Zimbabwe other than game parks and other obvious tourist attractions.

Political Sensitivities:  U.S. citizens have been detained and threatened with expulsion for administering humanitarian aid and expressing political opinions or criticism of the government. The streets around the President’s residence and the Botanical Gardens are closed to vehicle, bicycle, and foot traffic from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily. President Mnangagwa and senior government officials travel around Harare with large and aggressive motorcades that have been known to run motorists off the road. Security personnel occasionally beat and harass drivers who fail to pull out of the way quickly.  Move quickly off the road and come to a complete stop if overtaken by a motorcade.

Currency:  You should carefully review the U.S. sanctions program currently in place prior to engaging in the purchase/sale or transfer of money and other assets with a Zimbabwean citizen or entity. U.S. citizens are advised to consult the Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control  for up-to-date information on these sanctions.

Roadblocks:  The Government of Zimbabwe frequently uses marked and unmarked roadblocks to enforce order and collect fines, particularly in urban centers and on major roads. Quickly comply when instructed by police or security officials to stop at a roadblock.

Game Parks:  Safety standards and training vary at game parks and wildlife viewing areas. You should ascertain whether operators are trained and licensed. All animals should be respected as wild and extremely dangerous. Travelers should keep a safe distance from animals and remain in vehicles or other protected enclosures when visiting game parks.

Hunting: Tourists wishing to hunt in Zimbabwe must be accompanied by a licensed operator. You should request and check the authenticity of their license by contacting the Zimbabwe Professional Guides Association (Z.P.G.A) . Hunters should confirm that they are not hunting on illegally seized land or on a nature conservancy as you may be subject to arrest, lawsuits, fines, seizure of possessions, and imprisonment. You should also contact the Embassy of Zimbabwe in Washington, D.C. to determine what permits are required by the Government of Zimbabwe for importing weapons into the country.

Faith-Based Travelers:  See our following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report– see country reports
  • Human Rights Report  – see country reports
  • Hajj Fact Sheet for Travelers
  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTQI+ Travelers:  The constitution of Zimbabwe outlaws marriage between people of the same gender and allows for discrimination based on sexual orientation. Consensual sex between men is criminalized in Zimbabwe, with both parties subject to fines of 5,000 USD or a year imprisonment or both. While there is no explicit legal prohibition against sexual relations between women, societal violence and harassment against LGBTQI+ individuals is pervasive. See our LGBTQI+ Travel Information page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities: The law in Zimbabwe prohibits discrimination against persons with physical and mental disabilities, but the law is not enforced. Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is not as prevalent as in the United States. Accessible facilities, transportation, and communications are extremely rare. Expect accessibility to be limited in public transportation, lodging, communication/information, and general infrastructure. Contact the US Embassy in Zimbabwe to receive a list of providers.

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers: See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

The public medical infrastructure in Zimbabwe is far below U.S. standards and medical facilities are limited. Provincial hospitals in rural areas are rudimentary and not equipped to care for serious injuries. Serious illnesses or injuries require medical evacuation to South Africa.

You should:

  • Bring medications sufficient for the duration of your trip in original packaging;
  • Carry your prescriptions;
  • Be prepared to pay up front for medical services; and
  • Be prepared to arrange your own transportation to medical facilities.

For emergency services in Zimbabwe dial 999 for medical or 995 for police.

Ambulance services are:

  • available in the urban areas of Harare and Bulawayo and the tourist area of Victoria Falls, but training and response times of emergency responders is below U.S. standards.
  • not present throughout the rest of the country or are unreliable in most areas except major urban centers and Victoria Falls.
  • not equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment.

Injured or seriously ill travelers may prefer to take a taxi or private vehicle to the nearest major hospital rather than wait for an ambulance.

The power supply in Zimbabwe is 220 volt 50 Hz and unreliable. Travelers who use electrical medical devices should consider alternatives and verify with lodging accommodations that your needs can be met.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance overseas.

We strongly recommend  supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the Ministry of Health and Child Care to ensure the medication is legal in Zimbabwe.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention closely monitors the prevalence of disease in Zimbabwe and updates the Travel Health Notice accordingly. Monitor the  CDC website  for current information.

The following disease are prevalent:

  • Leptospirosis
  • Schistosomiasis
  • African Sleeping Sickness (African Trypanosomiasis)
  • African Tick-Bite Fever
  • Chikungunya
  • Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF)
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Yellow Fever
  • Marburg Hemorrhagic Fever
  • Rift River Valley
  • Tuberculosis (TB)

Vaccinations : Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations recommended by  the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Air Quality: Visit AirNow Department of State for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The air quality varies considerably and fluctuates with the seasons. It is typically at its worst in the southern hemisphere winter. People at the greatest risk from particle pollution exposure include:

  • Infants, children, and teens
  • People over 65 years of age
  • People with lung disease such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema
  • People with heart disease or diabetes
  • People who work or are active outdoors

Health facilities in general:

  • Public medical clinics lack basic resources and supplies. Private medical facilities in Harare, Bulawayo, and the tourist area of Victoria Falls can stabilize patients in emergencies.
  • Hospitals and doctors normally require payment “up front” prior to service or admission. Credit card payment is not available. Most hospitals and medical professionals require cash payment.
  • Generally, in hospitals only minimal staff is available overnight. Consider hiring a private nurse or having family spend the night with the patient, especially a minor child.
  • Patients bear all costs for transfer to or between hospitals.
  • Psychological and psychiatric services are limited, even in the larger cities, with hospital-based care only available through government institution

Medical Tourism and Elective Surgery

  • Medical tourism is a rapidly growing industry. People seeking health care overseas should understand that medical systems operate differently from those in the United States and are not subject to the same rules and regulations. Anyone interested in traveling for medical purposes should consult with their local physician before traveling and visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information on medical tourism.
  • We strongly recommend supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation in the event of unforeseen medical complications.
  • Your legal options in case of malpractice are very limited in Zimbabwe.

Pharmaceuticals

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for rules governing the transport of medication back to the United States. Medication purchased abroad must meet their requirements to be legally brought back into the United States. Medication should be for personal use and must be approved for usage in the United States. Please visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration websites for more information.
  • Zimbabwe does not allow the importation of Oxycodone, even with a prescription. Travelers should nor carry Oxycodone.

Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy

  • If you are considering traveling to Zimbabwe to have a child through use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) or surrogacy, please see our ART and Surrogacy Abroad page .
  • There is no legal framework for foreigners or same-sex couples to pursue surrogacy in Zimbabwe. As a result, surrogacy agreements between foreign intending parents and gestational mothers are not enforced by Zimbabwe courts.
  • If you decide to pursue parenthood in Zimbabwe via assisted reproductive technology (ART) with a gestational mother, be prepared for long and unexpected delays in documenting your child’s citizenship. Be aware that individuals who attempt to circumvent local law risk criminal prosecution.

Water Quality

  • In many areas, tap water is not potable. Bottled water and beverages are generally safe, although you should be aware that many restaurants and hotels serve tap water unless bottled water is specifically requested. Be aware that ice for drinks may be made using tap water.

Adventure Travel

  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about Adventure Travel .
  • CDC recommends that travelers going to Zimbabwe take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication you should take.
  • HIV/AIDS: Zimbabwe has an estimated HIV prevalence of 12.6% for those over age 15.
  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about Resources for Travelers regarding specific issues in Zimbabwe.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:  Driving in Zimbabwe is hazardous. Zimbabweans drive on the left side of the road and people often drive over the speed limit. Avoid driving at night. The Traffic Safety Council reports there are 40-50 vehicle accidents in Harare every night. Car seats for children are uncommon. Although the main highways throughout Zimbabwe are generally in fair but deteriorating condition, most lack passing lanes, shoulders, breakdown lanes, lighting, reflectors, and similar safety features. Secondary roads are normally in very poor condition.

Hazards you will encounter while driving (especially after dark):

  • Pedestrians (in dark clothing) and animals walking along or on the roads.
  • Motor vehicles with no headlights or taillights.
  • Restricted visibility when passing.
  • Faded lane markers and non-working streetlights and traffic lights.
  • Service stations lacking fuel and spare parts.
  • Numerous potholes.

There is no national network of roadside emergency service. However, the Automobile Association (AA) of Zimbabwe is willing to provide roadside emergency service to nonmembers for a fee. They can be contacted at +263-4-788-173. AA Zimbabwe’s 24-hour emergency roadside helpline is +263-4-776-760 or +263-712-406-033. Travelers can also contact the Road Angels, another roadside assistance service, at +263-4-334-304 and +263-4-334-418.

Traffic Laws:  It is illegal to use a cell phone while driving in Zimbabwe. Drivers are required to wear seat belts or helmets if driving motorcycles. Car seats are not legally required for small children. Driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) enforcement does not generally exist, resulting in high rates of impaired drivers, especially at night.

Public Transportation:  The U.S. Embassy prohibits its employees from using “Kombis” – the minibuses that service main routes – due to safety concerns. Inter-city commuter bus travel, except on “luxury coaches,” is dangerous due to overcrowding, inadequate maintenance, and unsafe drivers. Public bus drivers are often fatigued, fail to adhere to local speed limits, and often fail to obey traffic rules or regulations.

See our  Road Safety page  for more information.

Air Travel:  The U.S. Embassy prohibits its employees from using the national carrier, Air Zimbabwe, due to safety concerns. Several other regional airlines offer services, but flights can be subject to unannounced schedule changes.

Aviation Safety Oversight: As there is no direct commercial air service to the United States by carriers registered in Zimbabwe, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not assessed the government of Zimbabwe’s Civil Aviation Authority for compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards. Further information may be found on the FAA’s Safety Assessment page .

So, let's dive in and discover how you can make the most of your trip to Zimbabwe without breaking the bank!

When it comes to the cost of a trip to Zimbabwe, there are a few key factors to consider. For a round-trip ticket, flights to Zimbabwe can range from approximately $800 to $1500 in US dollars. Cost of Living in Zimbabwe

How much does it cost to live in zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe is a country located in Southern Africa.

The amazing thing about this country is that it’s the home to the massive Victoria Falls – one of the world’s wonders: Zambezi river forms the natural boundary with Zambia and when in full flood the Victoria Falls on the river forms the world’s largest curtain of falling water.

Victoria Falls are a major tourist attraction and the biggest source of money for this country.

However, right now Zimbabwe suffers from cash shortages and unemployment is very high, so the country is not in the best position.

Zimbabwe : Cost of Living by City

Restaurants.

Though you can always find some fancy expensive restaurants, eating out in Zimbabwe is not expensive, especially not for a tourist coming from the West.

A good meal in a restaurant costs about 10$-15$ which is about half of what it costs in the USA.

You can always eat street food and that will cost you even less than a decent meal in an inexpensive restaurant (which is somewhere around 6.0$).

As for prices, non-imported things are very cheap – but beware: for an average tourist who likes Western products, prices are usually not that much lower than in South Africa.

However, generally, the cost of everyday groceries is reasonable, that is, cheaper than eating in restaurants, so tourists living in Zimbabwe who opt to cook at home will save a considerable amount of money.

TRANSPORTATION

Minibus taxis are available for those interested in traveling in between cities in Zimbabwe and are relatively inexpensive by European standards.

They are cheap, but not necessarily safe.

You can also catch buses that run between the cities, but they are in bad conditions even by African standards, though they are rather cheap.

UTILITIES (MONTHLY)

If we’re speaking about Zimbabwe in general, paying bills in this country isn’t overly expensive.

Taking into consideration basic monthly utilities like electricity, water, heating, and cooling, it all amounts to around 62.82$ a month, which is affordable for a normal-sized apartment of about 85m2.

Monthly internet is very expensive in comparison to that costing almost 99.38$.

SPORTS & LEISURE

If you want to spend some quality time having fun in Zimbabwe or indulging in sports activities, you’ll need to pay up.

Namely, these activities are more expensive in Zimbabwe, especially renting out a tennis court per hour.

Tickets for cinema, however, are less expensive than in many other countries, for instance.

CLOTHING & SHOES

Prices of clothes have increased tremendously over the years and, nowadays, they cost about the same as in the USA.

One pair of jeans costs around 20$, which is less than in Europe, while quality sneakers are around 40$.

You can fill up your shopping basket with light pieces of clothing in chain stores like Zara or Bershka for 20$ a piece.

RENT PER MONTH

Renting out an apartment in Zimbabwe isn’t cheap, whether it’s in the suburbs or the city center.

Of course, you can pay less if you rent an apartment in a city that isn’t large or a tourist destination, but altogether it’s not a small investment.

An apartment for one, or possibly two people can cost around 300$ while a bigger apartment for a family can cost twice as much.

Cost of Living Averages Table for Zimbabwe

How does the average person spend their money in zimbabwe.

The people of Zimbabwe spend the biggest part of their salaries on food – a huge chunk of money gets spent on food, probably due to the fact that quality, imported products are considerably more expensive than domestic ones.

Citizens of Zimbabwe don’t spend nearly as much money on rent as they do on food – only 21% of all income gets spent on rent.

Transportation is next on the pie chart of necessities for the people of Zimbabwe because even though it’s inexpensive, it’s necessary.

People also spend a lot of money on restaurants, which means there are still enough means for some people to sometimes go out and have a nice meal.

Average Costs Breakdown

Zimbabwe: average salary, minimum wage & mortgages.

Although the economy is slowly improving, mass unemployment is still spreading throughout the country.

Victoria Falls are Zimbabwe’s most popular tourist destination and probably the only source of income for the country.

The problem of the country is that the salaries paid do not add up to the cost of living – minimum wage is only 245$.

And even though people are very optimistic as most believe in a better Zimbabwe, there’s a very high rate of unemployment: you will see lots of idle people mingling around cities.

Though the cost of living is too high, entrepreneurs and those owning their businesses are not affected by Zimbabwe’s levels of unemployment.

Commuting and Work

What is commuting time?

This is the time it takes you to go to, and get from, your place of work. There is no fixed commuting time. It depends on the nature of your job, your hours of work and when you start work which may be in the morning, afternoon or night.

Does one get paid for commuting time?

In Zimbabwe an employee is only paid a wage or salary for hours worked and not for time he/she spends commuting to and from work. However, some organisations pay a transport allowance to their low level staff and provide motor vehicles and fuel to managerial staff to enable them to commute to and from work. Other organisations provide actual transport for staff.

What if one works far from home?

You are only paid a transport allowance or offered actual transport by your employer to commute to and from work even if you work far from home.

Is Zanzibar cheap or expensive? What does a trip to Zanzibar cost? Is it possible to visit Zanzibar on a budget?

I was dreaming of going to Tanzania and Zanzibar for years. Up until the last moment I wasn’t sure if I will make it because the flights were getting more expensive by the minute. But then I booked a last-minute flight; bought a ticket on Friday and was flying to Spice Island on Saturday. So, I finally made it to Zanzibar.

I didn’t really know what to expect regarding Zanzibar travel costs. Will the vacation be cheap or expensive? Are the prices comparable to the ones in Asia, or maybe more to the ones in Samoa and Fiji? Perhaps a trip to Zanzibar will be in the same price range as Seychelles? I had no idea what the cost to travel to Zanzibar for 12 days will be. Below you will find my detailed Zanzibar travel budget breakdown. This will give you a brief idea, of how much it costs to travel to Zanzibar for a solo traveler. It will also give you an idea of daily Zanzibar travel costs. I spent 12 days/11 nights on Unguja island, which is known as Zanzibar. I have done some must-do activities and tours, explored Zanzibar beaches and UNESCO-listed Stone Town. Here is how much money you can expect to spend in Zanzibar as a solo (female) traveler.

Zanzibar budget breakdown

This Zanzibar budget breakdown is based on my experience, from the cost of trip to Zanzibar in August 2022. You can spend way less or way more, depending on your activities, way of travel, food preferences, and negotiation skills.

Zanzibar is one of the destinations, where you’ll find yourself getting ripped off over anything and everything. Bargaining for the prices and haggling is expected and accepted. Not in restaurants and in shops with fixed prices, but anywhere else. So, be prepared to haggle and negotiate; on the streets of Stone Town, when booking transportation (even taxis!), with street food vendors, tour prices, souvenirs … everywhere. Just ask for a ‘Rafiki price’ (Rafiki = friend) and go from there.

The prices stated were the exact values at the time of my writing. They might change in the future. This post is intended for the purpose of trip planning and to give you an approximate idea of how much to budget. To give you an idea of Zanzibar daily travel expenses. To be on the safer side, I would suggest budgeting more.

Do you want to travel like me? Here are some of my favorite travel tips and resources; FLIGHTS: I use Google Flights or Skyscanner to find the best flight deals. The destination everywhere feature is perfect to find some cheap deals! ACCOMMODATION: Booking.com is my favorite site for finding great hotel deals. RENTAL CARS: When planning an epic road trip, I travel with Discover Cars . TOURS & ACTIVITIES: I like to wander around on my own, but when I want to explore with a group I book a tour with GetYourGuide .

1. Cost of a flight ticket to Zanzibar

Prices of flight tickets are hard to compare because they vary so much. From where you fly, what time of the year you are going to Zanzibar, the airline company you are traveling with, and so on. I will include my flight ticket for reference, and to get a clearer overall cost of a 12-day vacation in Zanzibar. At the end of this post, there will be a total Zanzibar cost breakdown with and without a flight ticket.

To get to Zanzibar, I paid 528€ for a return flight ticket Zagreb-Zanzibar with Qatar Airways. Do note that I booked my flight less than a week before my trip and used Cash+Avios. If possible, book your tickets sooner. As always my recommendation is to use Google flights and Skyscanner or a combination of both. Those two websites are what I always use to book my flights.

If you fly to Dar es Salaam, you will then have to take another flight or choose a ferry. From Dar Es Salaam you can fly to Zanzibar with Precision Air, FlightLink, AirTanzania, or other airlines. The flight is only 20 minutes long and can cost from $40 to $100 US dollars one way. If you decide to go with a ferry, the journey will take a bit less than 3 hours, and will cost between $35 to $60 USD.

My total cost for a flight ticket was 528€.

2. Cost of a Tanzanian visa

Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania. And for Tanzania, you need a visa. You can get it flying to mainland Tanzania or flying directly into Zanzibar. No matter where you get it, it covers Zanzibar and the mainland and vice versa.

Some nationalities can get visas on arrival and some have to apply in advance, so check before you travel. If you can, apply for a visa online on the Tanzania eVisa website to skip the immigration queue. Apply at least one week before arrival. If you are getting your visa on arrival it is better to pay with cash. You can pay with a credit card but might be charged a fee.  For US citizens, a Tanzanian visa costs $100 USD and it is a multi-entry visa. For the majority of other nationalities, it costs $50 USD for a single entry visa.

My total cost for a Tanzanian visa was $50 USD.

3. Cost of travel insurance

This is one of those things I am always happy to buy (yes!) and I am even happier if I never have to use it. In that case, I consider it money well spent. Jokes aside, wherever you go, buy travel insurance. Every. Single. Time!

Even in Zanzibar, I have seen people needing medical assistance. One traveler needed it because of heat stroke. A doctor had to come to the hostel and get IV fluids. Not one, many of them. Cost; 270€. Another one sprained an ankle. Seriously, you just never know. I buy travel insurance with a Slovenian company. It covers the whole world and I get the package with the cover for a combined value of 1 million Euros. This travel insurance is valid for one (1) year for travels up to 90 days in one destination. So the more I travel, the better ‘value’ for the price. My total cost for travel insurance was 97€.* * I used the full travel insurance price in the calculation.

4. Cost of accommodation in Zanzibar

It is not often that I choose to stay in a hostel these days, or in a dorm room. So, why here? Firstly, I haven’t been to Africa (not counting Morocco). In the second place, I wasn’t really familiar with the whole culture or how ‘everything goes’. I am very familiar with the Polynesian and Melanesian cultures but didn’t know what to expect in Zanzibar. Finally, I was traveling alone and didn’t know how safe Zanzibar is for a solo female traveler. I have plenty of experience traveling solo in Asia in the Pacific region, but it is also easier to find friends in a touristy/honeymoon destination in a hostel. Plus it is always nicer to have a cocktail in paradise with like-minded people.

Even when I was searching for hostel accommodation, I was still looking for a place with nice ratings and reviews on Booking.com . And since Zanzibar has so many nice beaches, I really wanted to be on the beach. So, when I spotted The New Teddy’s on the Beach in Jambiani, it was a done deal. They have a front-row beach view, great ratings, and breakfast included in the price. You can read more about Staying at New Teddy’s on The Beach in my review.

Zanzibar accomodation

My next two accommodations were in the North of Zanzibar, in Nungwi, and in Stone town. In Nungwi I stayed in Makofi Guest house . They have private rooms and 2 dorms. They are located just 2 minutes away from the beach. Staff is super friendly and the atmosphere is great. If you book directly with them, on their website, you will get a 15% discount on food and drinks. So I did.

RELATED POST: • TOP 12 MOST AMAZING BEACH HOTELS IN JAMBIANI, ZANZIBAR

In Stone Town, I again booked my accommodation with Booking.com and stayed at Lost & Found Hostel , which is right in the center of Stone town. Opposite of Freddy Mercury museum. A great feature of this hostel are double beds, curtains for privacy, and your own power sockets and light. The only downside (for me) was that they don’t have breakfast.

In all the selected accommodations I felt great. They all have amazing stuff, a friendly atmosphere where you can meet other people and were silent at night time. I didn’t get woken up once, and none of the dorms were full while I was staying there. The accommodation price stated here includes the actual accommodation rate INCLUDING tax and city tax. City tax/Tourism fee is $9 per person per night and is added to your room rate throughout the island, on top of the regular room rate.

My total cost for accommodation came to $23 a night (room rate + City tax) or $256 for 11 nights (room rate + City tax) . Without the City tax my average room rate came to $14 a night (only room rate) or $157 (room rate only) + $99 (city tax).

I know you will remember, but just in case, Pin those!

5. Cost of transport in Zanzibar

Transport was by far the biggest expense on my trip to Zanzibar. I didn’t expect that the transport will be that expensive. You can lower the cost of transport if you find other travelers who can share the costs of transport with you. Or, if you can use local transport like Dala Dala, Boda Boda and Tuk Tuk’s.

From the airport, I booked a transfer/taxi to my hostel with New Teddy’s on the Beach for $40. A lot yes. But after my overnight flight, I just couldn’t be bothered, so I took an easy way to sort things out. Later, I found out that this is a pretty standard taxi fare from Stone town/Airport to Jambiani/Paje, which takes 1h and 30 minutes.

Another huge expense was to get from Jambiani to Nungwi, in the North of Zanzibar. You can expect to pay from $50 for 2 and half hour drive. I paid $70 because I stopped at The Rock restaurant and also at Jozani forest. During the time of my visit, the driver was waiting for me.

This route (Jambiani-Nungwi) could also be done with Dala Dala’s. And it would only cost 5000 Tanzanian Shillings (TZS). That way you would firstly have to go to Stone Town. Then change Dala Dala in a little chaotic Darajani bus stop, for Nungwi. The whole journey would take at least 4,5 hours. Zanzibar also has Zanzibus , with shuttles running between main tourist areas.

None of those options were a good fit for me, since I would not be able to stop at desired ‘touristy’ attractions. I would have to visit them as a day trip which would then be almost the same as a taxi ride. I also used Boda Boda in Jambiani and Nungwi to get to Paje, Kiwengwa, Kendwa and Turtle Sanctuary. From Nungwi to Stone Town I shared a taxi with two other travelers I have met in Makofi guest house in Nungwi. It included transport, a Spice tour and Prison island. I will add this to my Activities expenses. From Stone Town to Airport I used Tuk Tuk which was 10.000 Tanzanian Shillings (TZS).

My total cost for transportation came to $174 . With flights, the total is $702. This is $134 for my Zanzibar island transportation and $40 for the transport from my home to Zagreb airport. As I mentioned earlier, my flight ticket was 528€.

Don’t forget to Pin those!

6. Cost of food and drinks in Zanzibar

The cost of food in Zanzibar can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. You can have the best meal on the street for less than $2, dine in local restaurants and pay anything from $3 to $7 and up, or dine in hostels and resorts and pay from $8 up. My most expensive meal was in Stone Town when I splurged on a lobster and paid $33 USD. With the exception of the last two days, I had breakfast included in my room rate. I was eating a lot of seafood and fruit. Seafood is fresh, delicious, and affordable. It is always served with a choice of side (rice or french fries) and vegetables. Fruit, I love fruit. I have bought it at every fruit stand I came across; avocados, pineapples, tomatoes, mangos, and bananas. Cheap and healthy way to fill up your stomach. Tap water is not drinkable in Zanzibar. So you will have to buy water in shops or at street vendors. I usually paid from 1000 to 1500 TZS for a 1,5L water bottle ($0,40-$0,65 USD). Buying plastic bottles was not something I enjoyed but I didn’t want to get sick. Freshly made juices were from 2000 to 5000 TZS ($0,85-$2 USD) and soft drinks from 5000 TZS ($2 USD). Even though 99% of people practice Islam in Zanzibar, you could still find alcohol in hostels and restaurants. No idea how this is during Ramadan. The usual price for a local beer, Kilimanjaro, Savana, or Safari, is around 6000 TZS ($2,7 USD). The price for a cocktail varied from 6000 TZS to 14000 TZS ($6,5 USD). During happy hour you sometimes got 2 cocktails for the price of 14000 TZS. My total cost for food and drinks came to $200 or $17 per day.

7. Cost of activities and tours in Zanzibar

Zanzibar may be small but it has a lot to offer. You can go diving or spend your time kitesurfing or wave surfing. If you want to try any of those go to the beaches on the South East of Zanzibar. For a price reference check Aquaholics . They have offices in Paje and Jambiani. If you are traveling solo, the prices of tours will usually be more expensive. It is better to find some other travelers, and book a tour together. You will be able to negotiate a better deal as part of the group and save some money by splitting the costs. You can book tours while on Zanzibar (not always the best option) or with GetYourGuide .

My biggest highlight was dolphin watching in Kizimkazi. Now, before you jump, it was an Ethical Dolphin Watch tour. I was on a boat with a guy who works in Zanzibar as a marine conservationist. We didn’t chase the dolphins as it happened on one of the tours in Nungwi. The approach was similar to one of the dolphin tours in Kaikoura, New Zealand. We went further out on the ocean and when the guide noticed dolphins, we drove away from them but sort of followed the path of their swimming. So we watched them swim by on their desired route. Without disturbing them.

Jozani forest tour

On my way to Nungwi beach in the North of Zanzibar, I visited Jozani Forest . The guide in the Jozani explained about the plants in the forest, then you have the opportunity of spotting the mega-rare Zanzibar red colobus monkeys and in the end, you visit the mangrove forest. Entry ticket to the forest costs $12 USD.

In Nungwi, I signed up for a tour to Mnemba. There was a ‘guide’ on the beach who persuaded me that I just have to do it. It was $20 and I was not impressed with it at all. The boat ride from Nungwi to Bill Gate’s Mnemba island takes about an hour. And somewhere along the way driver spotted dolphins. So did 50 other boats. While I would be fine only watching them, that was not the case. Our and the rest of the boats were chasing dolphins, people were frantically jumping in the water to swim with them and it was just horrible. Even when we came to Mnemba island there were countless other boats.

Snorkeling was not good at all. And we only visited 1 spot. I have heard that Mnemba has the best snorkeling spots in Zanzibar, but was not really impressed. There were only a few corals, not really colorful, and we only saw a couple of fish. As I have heard, later on, it is better to arrange a private tour or go to the Mnemba island with a guided tour. You should also ‘mention’ the driver about the ‘spots’ (apparently there are 3) where the corals are still nice and intact. They have to pay a fee for visiting these spots since there are regular patrols. But going to Mnemba and the sand bank with a regular tour arranged on the beach is something I was not impressed with and would not do it again.

Spice & Prison island tour

I knew I couldn’t go to Zanzibar or the Spice island, without visiting Spice farm and without a visit to a Prison island . I did both of those in one day and paid $50 for the transport Nungwi – Stone Town, including Spice Tour and Prison Island. It was a really good deal when you put into account that only the transport from the Northern Beaches to Zanzibar city is $50.

On the Spice tour, you get to visit a local village, have a cooking class, and are then guided around the spice plantation. The guide explains about the spices, their usage and their health benefits. In the end, you can sample local fruits and watch how locals climb a coconut tree. After the spice tour, we had a private boat arranged to the Prison island . The guide there showed us around, and explained the history behind the island – it was used for quarantine not as a prison. In the end, you get to see the giant Aldabra Tortoises, which were brought to Changuu island (Prison island) from Seychelles. I enjoyed the Spice tour and Prison island so would recommend them both. In Nungwi I also visited Manari Marine Turtle Sanctuary, where you are able to get up close to the green turtles. And since I am geography and history teacher and a tour guide, I booked a Stone town tour . The guide showed me around the narrow alleys of Stone town, explained the history of UNESCO World Heritage city, shared secrets of the Stone town doors, took me inside the old port building, showed me around a bit chaotic Darajani market and to an Anglican cathedral where the was once an old slave market. Tour lasted more than 3 hours and was $20 plus a tip.

My total cost for activities and tours came to $160.

Zanzibar budget 5a

8. Cost of miscellaneous items in Zanzibar

In most countries I go to, I buy a local SIM card as soon as I land. It is my least favorite thing about traveling to a new county. But I didn’t buy a Tanzanian SIM card. Wifi in Zanzibar is amazing! It is fast and reliable. All the accommodations and restaurants have it. And it is FREE. It is also great if you are a digital nomad because the connections here are great.

What I included in the miscellaneous items are tips and souvenirs I bought at the end of my trip in Stone Town. Those were cute wooden animals, a Zanzibar flag, three magnets, two khangas (sarongs), a book and a couple of postcards. I also bought vanilla, coffee, and tea.

Before I left I also bought a chapter from Lonely Planet Tanzania Guidebook, for 3,5€. I love how you can buy PDF guides and then read them on your tablet, computer or iPhone without the need to print everything. The guide covers everything you need; from transport to the island, history, where to sleep, and where to eat.

My total cost for miscellaneous items came to $85 .

9. My total expenses for 12 days/11 nights in Zanzibar

Flight ticket: 528€ = $528 Visa: $50 Accommodation: $256 Transportation: $174 Food: $200 Activities and tours: $160 Miscellaneous: $85 Total amount WITH flight ticket in 12 days: $1453 Total amount WITHOUT flight ticket in 12 day: $925

My average daily amount spent came to $77 per day (without flights).

Zanzibar budget 2c

All of the above in a nutshell

Zanzibar can easily be traveled on a budget. It is not as cheap as Asia but it is also not as expensive as Seychelles. Once you get to know the system and are accustomed to the prices, you can spend your time there on a super-tight budget. If you skip tours, use local transport, and eat at food markets and stands Zanzibar can be a very budget-friendly destination.

My travel costs in 12 days in Zanzibar averaged on $77 per day, not including flights. I wasn’t traveling on a tight budget. I splurged on tours, was having nice meals in restaurants, plus had a beer and cocktail almost every day.

The biggest travel expense was the transport. I had no idea that the taxis will be that expensive. And I didn’t want to lose time by traveling on local transport so I went with it. You can lower the transport expense by traveling with other people and splitting the costs. I was lucky enough to do it once.

I hope you found my Zanzibar detailed budget breakdown helpful. Is it meant to be informative nature to help you with your Spice Island travel planning. The prices mentioned can change and can be lower or higher based on the time of year you are visiting Zanzibar (peak or off-season), your travel style, if you will be traveling solo or with a group, and your own personal travel style and preferences.  Do you think Zanzibar is cheap or expensive? What a destination! I’d love to visit Zanzibar someday! Thanks so much for sharing.

It is amazing! Everything you wish for! A bit of culture, cuisine, language, customs … but friendly and affordable.

Very cool. I’ve always wanted to visit, so thank you for providing such a detailed guide and price breakdown.

Thank you! I love reading detailed budget breakdown posts… so I have a rough idea on what to expect and how much money to save. I know we all differ in our travel style and spending habits, but it is nice to have an approximate 😀

It seems pricey to get there, but hotels, transport and food seem very affordable! Would love visit, so this is very useful 😍

Thank you. It was pricey at the time of my annual leave (when all the rest of the Europe and US also have their annual leave). But if you search for dates in Jan in Feb next year, regular prices are lower than what I paid (at that is without using miles).

It looks like you had a good time on a decent budget. In another life, I would have loved to have done that.

IT was amazing! And it is never too late 😉

It was great to read about your budget for Zanzibar. I know that many costs depend on choices you make. But this covered all the different kinds of costs to expect. Good think that hubby is good at haggling! I will definitely budget enough for some great activities.

Thank you! when I search for a budget breakdown I want to have as much info as possible. I know that it will be different at the end, but at least to know what to expect. Yeah, bargaining is a necessary must so … be prepared 😀

Sounds like an exciting place to visit. A great breakdown of costs, helps me to put into perspective what I would spend, give or take, visiting. I’d love to take a Tuk Tuk if I visit!

Thank you! It is just to get a perspective for planning. I did take a tuk-tuk from Stone Town to the Airport. They told me that the ‘good price’ is 10.000 shillings (taxi is from $10-$12).

Wow. So much I didn’t know that Zanzibar offered! What a detailed article. Thank you

Zanzibar was already high on my wishlist and now even more so! What a beautiful place!

Hi Anja I am visiting Zansibar in April 2023 for 7 days – need to know is it better to keep my money in USD or exchange the USD to TZS? And can I take my shells I buy there and the spices on the plane back to Namibia?

Hi! Wow, so happy you are going there! Do you have anything booked? Also, there might be some rain in April but it shouldn’t be too bad.

Money wise. I exchanged all my money to TNZ. EUR to TNZ was a bit better exchange rate than from USD. Also, the best exchange rate that I found was outside the airport. You go outside and then turn right, like you want to go back inside and check-in for another flight. The exchange office is super small and outside of the building. USD or TNZ. There are some hotels that take EUR or USD, only a few take cards (but they add a fee). Also, there are not many ATMs so bring cash – a lot of it. And don’t worry, because there are safes in the room.

I don’t know if you can take shells. My personal opinion is that you should not take shells or sand or anything from the beach or nature. I know that in some countries the laws for doing this are super strict and fines are high. No idea about Zanzibar/Tanzania. a little bit of sand might not seem like much, but I see it as a because it’s a “theft” [from] future generations and a rick to the environment. It took thousands of years for sand to be formed, and pristine beaches created. Over time, shells will break down and become sand. It is part of great circle of life. So, I don’t know if you can, but I would advise you against it.

Zimbabwe Travel Insurance Requirements

Last updated: 03/07/2024

Squaremouth’s Zimbabwe Travel Insurance Recommendations

From ancient cities to wondrous scenery, Zimbabwe is one of Africa’s most exciting and popular destinations. Not to mention, the country is also home to the Big Five, making it a world-famous safari destination, too. All of this comes at a high price tag, however, and visitors traveling from abroad are encouraged to protect their trip investment in the event unforeseen events disrupt their plans.

While Zimbabwe has no official travel insurance requirements, it’s recommended to get a policy that includes coverage for cancellations, medical emergencies, delays, and lost luggage.

Cancellation Coverage for Zimbabwe

From flights to safari tours, visiting Zimbabwe can be a costly adventure. Squaremouth data indicates that the average trip to Zimbabwe costs travelers nearly $15,000, making it one of the most expensive destinations in the world.

Having a travel insurance policy with cancellation coverage is a smart way to protect your trip investment. With the Trip Cancellation benefit, travelers can be reimbursed for all of their prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses if they fall ill, get injured, or experience other covered disruptions prior to departing for their trip.

Policies with Trip Cancellation also include Trip Interruption coverage, which can provide travelers reimbursement if unexpected events cause them to return home from their trip early. This benefit applies to travelers that have already departed for their trip and have unused, nonrefundable trip costs.

The most common covered reasons include unforeseen illness, injury, or death of the traveler, a traveling companion, or a non-traveling family member. Other covered cancellation reasons may also include terrorism, inclement weather, or a natural disaster, among others.

Zimbabwe Travel Medical Insurance

Safaris and adventure tourism are some of the main drivers of visitors to Zimbabwe, often taking travelers deep into remote areas of the country. When traveling to remote locations, far from hospitals and treatment facilities, it’s recommended to have a policy with high medical coverage. This is one of the most important safari travel insurance benefits, as the cost of medical treatment can be significant.

Travel medical coverage is broken down into two main components: Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation .

The Emergency Medical benefit is designed to provide treatment during a trip. If a traveler in your group is injured or falls ill during your trip, the Emergency Medical benefit can cover the cost of treatment. This includes ambulance services, lab costs, medical bills, x-rays, and other physician services. With the potential for high medical costs when visiting Zimbabwe, we recommend a policy of at least $100,000 in Emergency Medical coverage.

The Medical Evacuation benefit can cover the costs of transportation to the nearest adequate medical facility in the event of an emergency. While in Zimbabwe, this may involve lengthy drives or air-ambulance assistance. For that reason, we recommend visitors find a policy with at least $250,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage.

Zimbabwe Delay Coverage

While Zimbabwe attracts millions of tourists each year from around the world, getting to the Southern African nation isn’t always an easy journey, and often requires a multi-leg journey. With that comes a higher chance of travel disruptions and delays. This is a growing concern for travelers in today’s travel landscape.

Fortunately, most comprehensive travel insurance policies offer protection for travelers that experience delays that impact their trip.

Travelers enroute to Zimbabwe that experience a delay may be eligible for food and accommodation reimbursement through their policy’s Travel Delay benefit. If the delay causes them to miss a connecting flight, the Missed Connection benefit can also reimburse for a new flight or other costs associated with catching up with their trip.

To be eligible for delay coverage, a delay must reach a certain length, which can typically range from 3-12 hours. The best policies for travel delay will have lower delay requirements and higher coverage limits, with some policies reimbursing up to $2,000 per traveler.

Most comprehensive travel insurance policies also include luggage protection. Both the a href=“https://www.squaremouth.com/travel-insurance-benefits/baggage-delay”>Baggage Delay and Baggage & Personal Items Loss benefits offer reimbursement to travelers if their baggage gets damaged, delayed, or lost at any point during their trip.

Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times and how much of the eclipse people could see across the U.S.

By Aliza Chasan

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:00 AM EDT / CBS News

A total solar eclipse  crossed North America Monday with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show  where and when astronomy fans could see the big event  as skies darkened in the middle of the day Monday, April 8.

The total eclipse first appeared along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then traveled across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.

About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon fully blocked out the sun , according to NASA. The path ranged between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.

The total solar eclipse started over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that experienced totality was Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT, according to NASA. From there, the path continued into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse exited continental North America at around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.

The path of totality included portions of the following states:

  • Pennsylvania
  • New Hampshire

Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan also experienced the total solar eclipse.

Several major cities across the U.S. were included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others saw a partial eclipse. These were some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — though the weather was a factor :

  • San Antonio, Texas (partially under the path)
  • Austin, Texas
  • Waco, Texas
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Dayton, Ohio
  • Cleveland, Ohio
  • Buffalo, New York
  • Rochester, New York
  • Syracuse, New York
  • Burlington, Vermont

Map of when the solar eclipse reached totality across its path

The eclipse began in the U.S. as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and then moving along its path to the northeast over the following few hours.

Eclipse map of totality

NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. People could have also  checked their ZIP code on NASA's map  to see when the eclipse was to reach them if they were on, or near, the path of totality — or if they saw a partial eclipse instead.

How much of the eclipse did people see if they live outside the totality path?

While the April 8 eclipse covered a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may have spotted a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer they were to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that was hidden.

NASA allowed viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun was to be covered in their locations.

Could there be cloud cover be during the solar eclipse?

Some areas along the path of totality had a higher likelihood of cloud cover that could interfere with viewing the eclipse. Here is a map showing the historical trends in cloud cover this time of year.

You could have checked the latest forecast for your location with our partners at The Weather Channel .

United States map showing the percent of cloud cover in various regions of the eclipse path on April 8. The lakeshore region will be primarily affected.

Where did the solar eclipse reach totality for the longest?

Eclipse viewers near Torreón, Mexico, got to experience totality for the longest. Totality there lasted 4 minutes, 28 seconds, according to NASA.

Most places along the centerline of the path of totality saw a totality duration of between 3.5 and 4 minutes, according to NASA. Some places in the U.S. came close to the maximum; Kerrville, Texas, had a totality duration of 4 minutes, 24 seconds.

What is the path of totality for the 2044 solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Astronomy fans in the U.S. will have far fewer opportunities to see the 2044 eclipse they had on April 8. NASA has not yet made maps available for the 2044 eclipse but, according to The Planetary Society , the path of totality will only touch three states.

The 2024 eclipse will start in Greenland, pass over Canada and end as the sun sets in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.
