The best dog-friendly days out in the UK, according to the National Trust

With parks, woods, moors and miles of coastline to explore, find a walk that your pup will love

the national trust's top 45 dog friendly days out in the uk

Whether you're planning a visit to the coast or the countryside, or are hoping to explore more of your local area, the National Trust and Forthglade have worked together to improve the facilities at each of these locations to enable every pup and their owner to have a fantastic day out in the great outdoors.

These improvements include everything from more waste bins, drinking stations and dog-washing areas, as well as clearer and additional signage and even downloadable walks to provide plenty of inspiration.

And starting this year, every single National Trust park, garden or nature reserve will carry a 'pawprint rating' to allow you to discern which location is the most dog-friendly. You'll also be able to find a description on each individual property webpage, with the new Trust handbook also highlighting these locations.

And the initiative has been welcomed by adventurer and TV presenter Simon Reeve. "I love spending time in the great outdoors with my dogs, especially at this time of year when walks can refresh the mind and inspire ambitions and goals for the year ahead," he says. "I think it's wonderful that the team at Forthglade and the National Trust are working together to ensure dogs are even more welcome at the places the Trust care for."

Take a look at the full list below to find out the best dog days out...

What a prickle…

We're sorry – it looks like something's gone wrong

Writer Lottie Gross, with Arty, in Shetland.

20 of the best dog-friendly places to stay in the UK

From scenic hotels to coastal inns, woodland retreats to country camping, these places are more than happy to welcome your canine companions

O n a Saturday morning in the Lake District, perhaps at the base of a popular fell or along the shores of a placid lake, you might think you were at a countryside Crufts. The region’s footpaths are bustling with spaniels, labradors and golden retrievers – and the ubiquitous cockapoo, of course – all in procession, dragging their owners up hills or along forested trails, tongues out, tails wagging, noses poised to sniff the behind of anything they might pass.

The Lakes often sells itself as the dog-friendly capital of the UK – and for good reason. I challenge you to find a Cumbrian pub that doesn’t have a jar of treats on the bar. But there are plenty more places for the UK’s increasing population of dog owners (29% of UK adults at the PDSA’s last count ) to spend their holidays besides the Lakes.

Having spent the last three years romping around the UK and Ireland for my latest dog-friendly travel book , with my always-alert Manchester terrier Arty by my side, I’ve happened on some of the most (and least) dog-friendly destinations. I love Northumberland for its vast open beaches, Lincoln for its cavernous canine-friendly cathedral and Shetland for its utter emptiness – though be careful not to disturb the ground-nesting birds in spring and summer.

We dog owners are an intrepid lot, and almost anywhere you go you’ll find excellent dog-loving campsites, pet-centric cottages and hotels that offer as many amenities for your companion as they do for you. Here are 20 of the best.

Sunnyside, Robin Hood’s Bay, North Yorkshire

Sunnyside Robin Hood’s Bay bedroom

If your dog is the type that prefers to lounge on plush cushions and sofas rather than rough it in a dog bed on the floor, Sunnyside is going to satisfy their daily napping requirements. This cottage in charming Robin Hood’s Bay, which has a dog-friendly sandy beach with no summer restrictions, is run by the local pet-shop owner, and they’ve thought of everything. There are spare leads, a dog toy box and even dog robes to help them dry off after a day on the beach. Your dogs are allowed on the furniture as long as you’re using the throws provided, and they can snooze in the bedroom with you. The village has lots of dog-friendly pubs and cafes for eating out – try Brambles Bistro . And walks along the coast will knacker out even the most energetic of dogs. Don’t miss a ride on the North Yorkshire Moors railway from Whitby to Pickering, too. From £235 for two nights , sleeps four, two small dogs or one large , baytownholidaycottages.co.uk

Brucefield estate, Forestmill, Clackmannanshire

Brucefield

If sleeping amid a 1,000-acre woodland and waking to the sound of jays, woodpeckers and chaffinches is your bag, book into Brock. This wooden hut is a schenbothy – a Scandi-meets-Scottish tiny home built on the Brucefield estate just north of the Forth estuary. For dogs, there are beds and bowls provided and plenty of walking routes through the estate – keep them on a lead around the red squirrels and free-roaming deer – and humans can enjoy evenings on the wraparound deck, binoculars in one hand and a beer in the other, looking out for buzzards in the trees. From £132 a night (including £ 40 dog supplement), sleeps two humans and one dog, canopyandstars.co.uk

Bracken Hide hotel, Portree, Isle of Skye

The Bracken Hide Hotel, Isle of Skye Nordic Saunas + Plunge Pool

A new opening for Skye in 2023, the Bracken Hide is one of the few hotels on the island to allow dogs into its restaurant and whisky bar. This isn’t the only reason it’s a cracking dog-friendly stay, though: its 27 cabins are scattered on a hillside overlooking Loch Portree, offering ample outdoor space for a morning or midnight roam with the dog, and there are plush beds for both people and their pets. The only place dogs aren’t allowed is the sauna, which is best paired with a dip in the plunge pool while the dog is snoozing back in your room. B&B from £ 225 , brackenhide.co.uk

Argaty Cottage, Doune, Perthshire

Argaty Cottage

This modest little cottage has three bedrooms and an enclosed garden, but it’s the location within the Argaty Estate that is most enticing: on your doorstep you’ll find red squirrels bouncing among the trees, a mesmerising red kite feeding station , where a frenzy of birds gathers daily to feed on meat put out by the rangers, and evidence of elusive beavers down by the water. Join one of the estate ATV buggy tours – the dog can jump in the back – to explore the working farm and wider, wilder estate, or book the kids into a pond-dipping session to meet the creatures that lurk beneath the surface of their thriving waterholes. From £375 for three nights , sleeps six, no dog limit, argatycottage.com

Skylark cabin, Ilfracombe, Devon

Skylark, Ilfracombe

Sitting on the fringes of Exmoor national park, where dramatic clifftop walks await, Skylark is the sort of place you’ll struggle to leave once you’ve settled in. This hillside wood cabin has views over Combe Martin and a bathtub on the outside deck, where you can soak knowing the power you’re using is coming from the owner’s onsite wind turbine. With livestock nearby, dogs must be on leads here, but off-lead adventures can be had in the secure paddock by the car park. From £ 127 a night, sleeps two humans and two dogs, pawsandstay.co.uk

McLaughlin’s cabin, Market Drayton, Shropshire

McLaughlin’s, Market Drayton

This Shropshire tiny home is a lesson in reclamation and recycling, as so much of its interiors, from the corrugated iron splashbacks to the vintage rug wall hangings, has been reused, repurposed or reinvigorated. Once you’ve tired the dog out on the trails of the nearby Dorothy Clive Garden or the Trentham estate , it’s all about sitting – either in the single-person hot tub while the dog roams in the enclosed garden, on the veranda’s cosy little love seat with a sundowner or in front of the log burner inside with a dog snoring at your feet. From £ 125 a night, sleeps two humans, one dog, pawsandstay.co.uk

Vineyard Cottage, East Ruston, Norfolk

Vineyard Cottage

With the edge of the Broads on one side and the vast, flat expanse of the Norfolk coast on the other, Vineyard Cottage is in prime position for long walks by the water – and perhaps a paddle for willing dogs. But location isn’t the only thing that earns this house a place on this list; if dog-friendly means dogs are allowed , then this place is dog-obsessed. There’s a fully enclosed garden, throws and towels for dogs, dog crates and beds on request, and a shower in the garden for washing paws after muddy walks. And, unlike almost anywhere else you’ll book in Britain, they’re even allowed to sleep on the bed with you. From £ 698 a week, sleeps four humans, unlimited dogs, eastrustoncottages.co.uk

Pheasant Inn, Tattenhall, Cheshire

The Pheasant Inn, Cheshire Pheasant View

More than 300 years old and built using sandstone from the very hills it’s plonked atop, the Pheasant Inn is a cracking pub with rooms in the Cheshire countryside. Each bedroom has its own design with colourful printed wallpaper and quirky artworks – such as squirrels in flat caps drawn on old newspaper – while the food is a double AA-rosette affair. The Sunday roasts with their crispy yorkshire puds are especially rewarding, and there’s even a menu for the dog. The highlight here, though, is the view from the beer terrace out the front: an endless expanse of green opens out beneath the pub as far as the eye can see. From £ 148.50 a night, thepheasantinn.co.uk

Bamburgh Castle Inn, Seahouses, Northumberland

The Bamburgh Castle Inn

Its wide, sandy beaches, castles that tower over the sea and proximity to the hiking trails of a wild national park make Northumberland a compelling place for anyone on holiday. But for dog owners, there’s one big bonus: those beaches and their dunes are dog-friendly all year round, without a summer restriction in sight. From the modest, homely rooms at this Seahouses pub you can wander down on to the beach at any time of year and let the dog run all the way to Bamburgh and its red sandstone castle (which they’re welcome to explore, too). From £112.50 a night , £10 per dog a night, inncollectiongroup.com

Low Mill Guest House, Bainbridge, Yorkshire Dales

Low Mill Guest House, Bainbridge, Yorkshire Dales Dotty, resident dog

Right in the heart of the Wensleydale area lies this 18th-century corn mill where dogs are given as warm a welcome as their humans by owners Neil and Jane and their beautiful sighthound, Dotty. There are just three rooms here, each uniquely decorated with colourful printed wallpapers and irreverent artworks, and some have original mill equipment that still works to this day. Dogs can’t join you in the breakfast room but they’ll love roaming the gardens where red squirrels can be seen snacking at the feeding boxes. From £1 10 a night , lowmillguesthouse.co.uk

Acorn Inn, Evershot, Dorset

The Acorn Inn, Evershot

Old coaching inns rarely get more atmospheric than this: the Acorn is all oak-panelled nooks, creaking wooden beams and flagstone floors, and it looks just as it did when Thomas Hardy featured it in his 19th-century novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles. Dinner here is the highlight – expect a classic gastropub menu that’s elevated by exceptional produce and careful crafting in the kitchen. Dogs will get biscuits from the bar and water on request, and the staff can give you the lowdown on where to walk. Don’t miss a hike up the hill where the Cerne Abbas Giant lies 8½ miles away. From £1 40 , dogs £15 , acorn-inn.co.uk

Aurora Shepherd’s Hut, Radcot, Oxfordshire

Aurora Shepherd’s Hut

Stay in this shepherd’s hut in the Oxfordshire countryside and you’ll be nestled up to the irresistibly bucolic Cotswolds, where almost endless, undulating fields of sheep are punctuated by little amber-tinted towns and villages with thatched cottages and quaint stone bridges. Avoid the nearby tourist-heavy hotspots of Burford and Bibury and instead head to the likes of Minster Lovell for walks amid ruins by the River Windrush or into Bampton for a glimpse of that classic Cotswolds architecture (Downton Abbey fans will recognise the church). The shepherd’s hut has a lovely log burner, making this a brilliant winter break, and it sits within a fully enclosed paddock so the dog can roam free. From £2 99 for three nights , sleeps two , one dog (but flexible), staycotswold.com

Luccombe Manor, Isle of Wight

Luccombe Manor

Venturing over to the Isle of Wight can be quite the adventure for a dog – the ferry journey is especially fun if the weather’s good, but there’s a fully dog-friendly lounge on board the Wightlink vessels if not. Luccombe Manor is the place for posh dogs to stay: blankets and beds are provided in the bedrooms, there’s an outdoor wash station for muddy or sandy paws, and treats are provided on arrival. They even provide a dog kitchen where you can prepare their dinner if need be, and they’re allowed to join you for breakfast in the restaurant. Luccombe Manor welcomes children too, and you can all hang out by the pool when you’re not enjoying nearby Shanklin beach. From £90 a night , one well-behaved dog £40 per booking , luccombemanor.co.uk

The Rose, Deal, Kent

The Rose

The Kent coast is packed with lovely beaches, and the shingle stretch at Deal is a pleasing spread with its 1950s pier and smattering of fishing boats jauntily sitting on the shoreline. Just a few streets behind the coastline lies the lovely Rose pub. Rooms have bold prints and yellow claw-foot tubs, and dinners in the dog-friendly restaurant have been commended by the likes of Observer food critic Jay Rayner . From £100 a night , one dog allowed, therosedeal.com

Horseshoe Cottage, Dawlish Warren, Devon

Spanie, Horseshoe Cottage

Part of the Cofton Holidays park but offering a little more privacy, Horseshoe Cottage is in prime position for walking and cycling in the 25-hectare (65-acre) Dawlish Countryside Park and along the year-round dog-friendly beach at Dawlish Warren. You’ll have an enclosed patio to keep the dog safe and access to all the nearby park’s facilities – including the pools and an off-lead dog-exercise paddock. From £ 539 a week, sleeps four, dogs at £50 each a week or £30 each per short break (maximum two), coftonholidays.co.uk

Hay loft, Watergate Bay, Cornwall

Hayloft

The interiors of the Hayloft are high end but pleasingly minimalist, letting the views outside do the talking – this barn conversion is surrounded by a seemingly endless expanse of lush green fields. Beyond these, though, lies one of Cornwall’s most dog-friendly beaches: the vast Watergate Bay. Just a few minutes’ drive or a 30-minute walk down to the sand, at low tide it’s the perfect place for a game of Frisbee or fetch with the dog. The house has a fully enclosed garden and a store for surfboards or paddleboards. From £44 5 for three nights , sleeps four, two dogs at £30 per dog per week (or per stay), luxurycoastal.co.uk

Musselwick House, St Ishmaels, Pembrokeshire

Coastal Cottages’ Musselwick House

The Pembrokeshire coast is packed with wide, sandy beaches where dogs can run free all year round – Marloes Sands is one spectacular stretch near here – but this house has its own quiet beach right outside the back gate. There’s a fully enclosed garden and sublime sea views from the living room and bedrooms, and with a pair of binoculars you can watch the waders at the Gann nature reserve from your sofa. From £1,015 a week, sleeps eight humans and two dogs, £15 per pet per week (or short break), coastalcottages.co.uk

Hawarden estate, Deeside, Flintshire

Beekeeper’s Hut at Hawarden

Just a hop over the Welsh border from handsome historic Chester and only a 20-minute walk from the nearest train station at Hawarden, the Hawarden estate has 26 well-spaced camping and glamping pitches on its meadows amid the woodland. Bring the dog by train or drive your own camper or caravan there to commune with nature, play games in the clubhouse and eat divine local produce from the extensive onsite farm shop. There are cooking classes and workshops in the Walled Garden, pick-your-own fields and an explorers’ trail through the estate, plus the local dog-friendly pub is a short walk away. For dogs that prefer a little more luxury, book the Beekeeper’s Hut (from £150 a night, book via thegoodlifesociety.co.uk) within the Walled Garden. From £44 a night, hawardenestate.co.uk

Triumphal Arch Lodge, Colebrooke, County Fermanagh

Truimphal Arch Lodge Fermanagh

Set within a 400-hectare working estate that once belonged to the Northern Irish premier Basil Brooke, this modest little gatelodge is a charming little retreat. Its interiors are a throwback to simpler times, with antique furniture and not a television or wifi router in sight. This is a place for switching off, watching out for the local pine martens and woodpeckers, and getting outside with the dog to explore the island-dotted shores of Lough Erne – dogs can even tag along on Erne Adventures’ hydrobikes . From £116 a night , sleeps four humans and one dog , irishlandmark.com

Buckland Farm Camping, Wellington, Somerset

Few campsites are as dog-friendly as Buckland Farm, where if you book ahead you can bag one of two fenced-in pitches for tents or campervans, offering total freedom for your dog to roam while you’re enjoying your breakfast. You needn’t worry if you miss out, though, as there’s still a fenced-in paddock for off-lead exercise, and there are even agility classes on site. Beyond the site lie the Blackdown Hills, which are begging to be explored with all four paws. From £2 2 a night, £1 per dog , bucklandfarmcamping.com

5 Top Dog-Friendly Day Trips Out of London

Created in conjunction with Holiday Cottages.

London is all things to all men (and their dogs). With inner and outer-city parks and woodlands throughout the metropolis, there’s often no need to venture beyond the confines of the M25 ring road to further afield in England.

On the other hand, even the most devoted capital city dweller will admit that they feel the occasional pull to go on a day trip beyond the suburbs. So, rally the hounds and get on the train or pack up the car, here is a list of five of our favourite places within easy travelling distance of London .

Head to the coast or further inland to the hills where the open countryside entices and offers fantastic escapes for you and your devoted pets!

Dog-friendly day trips from London

1. The Royal Town of Windsor

Distance from London: 55 minutes by train from Waterloo Best for: Big parks, green spaces and ease of reach from London

Windsor is a perennial favourite for day trippers. The royal town is directly connected to Waterloo Station, with a journey time of just 55 minutes. The great thing about Windsor is that there is a very good choice of dog-friendly parks and open spaces in the town centre.

First of all, seek out the Home Park which is a wide-open and green park (with a play park and public WCs). This park is adjacent to Riverside station and offers lots of space for your dog to hare around and children to play. Views are enhanced by Windsor Castle, which looks down over the park.

Windsor Castle

Another central park is Alexandra Gardens and the Goswells, managed gardens that line the River Thames that are a lovely place for a picnic after a stroll. There are lots of swans and ducks along the river walk, so keep your dog on its lead as a precaution. Alternatively, head across the Thames to the wild and umtamed Brocas – you can reach it via the pedestrian bridge into Eton.

At the other end of the town centre is The Long Walk, a 3-mile drive that connects Windsor Castle to the Copper Horse. Lined with trees, this is another brilliant place for a walk and a play. (Just beware of deer!) At the castle end of the Long Walk is a great pub, the Two Brewers, where you can have a refreshing drink after your adventure.

2. The Beaches of Whitstable

Distance from London: 75 minute drive from central London Best for: Long beaches, dog-friendly pubs and restaurants, and ease of reach

Lovers of sea views and long promenades will definitely appreciate a day trip to Whitstable. Famed for its oysters, there’s a lot of dog-friendly places to discover on your day trip to this seaside town, just a 75 minute drive from the centre of London.

Whitstable Oysters

Like many UK beaches , there are restrictions for dogs at some of Whitstable’s beaches. However, West Beach is great for all our four-legged friends to run free without hindrance. It’s a shingle beach and is privately owned.

Further along the coast is Tankerton Slopes Beach, a grassy sloped and shingle beach. There are a few dog restrictions here but it’s still a great spot for you and your dog to head to when the weather is good. Double check the signs before enjoying a scamper.

Beach huts at Whitstable

Whitstable also home to list of dog-friendly pubs and eateries as long as your arm. Don’t miss sampling some of the local oysters while in town!

3. Seaside Dungeness

Distance from London: Less than a two-hour drive from central London Best for: Open spaces, long walks and unique sights

For the widest possible contrast from the typical UK urban sprawl and lush green hillside, point the car towards the memorable seaside village of Dungeness. Situated on a vast coastal shingle bank – the largest in Europe – nature lovers will marvel at the diversity of plant and wildlife that thrive here.

Former fishermen’s huts, converted train carriages, and sleek, eco-homes are dotted across Dungeness’ stark landscape. It’s a unique place in the UK with some great walks there and at the neighbouring Romney Marshes.

Two pubs can be found in Dungeness, both of which are exceedingly dog friendly and both (yes, both) serve some of the best fish ‘n’ chips you’ll ever eat. High praise indeed but trust us – it’s hard to pick between them.

The shingle spit is also home to Dungeness A and Dungeness B, colossal nuclear power stations that dominate the skyline to the west. Embark on a fascinating tour (advance bookings only and no dogs permitted). It’s the only place in the UK where you can see a reactor (all others in England are out of sight and underwater).

Dungeness is also close to a lovely sandy beach at Lydd-on-Sea that stretches most of the way to Dymchurch in the north.

4. Dunstable Downs and Ivinghoe Beacon

Distance from London: A one-hour drive northeast of central London Best for: Walks, views and a great dog-friendly cafe

Head to the Vale of Aylesbury and you will find the jaw-droppingly beautiful chalk grassland areas of Dunstable Downs and Ivinghoe Beacon. The London Gliding School is in the valley below the steep chalk hills that form the attractive ridge – and there is lots of open space to enjoy.

The elevation of the Downs affords expansive views across the Bedfordshire countryside and you can see forever on a clear day.

Dunstable Downs hosts a modern visitor centre, including a dog-friendly café and terrace. A programme of great events takes place here but the spectacle of kite flyers and gliders soaring overhead make sure that there’s rarely a dull moment here. Ask whether they have any of their dog ice cream in stock!

For peace and quiet, head to the sunken lanes where you can spot butterflies and rare orchids when the season is right. Make sure you keep your hounds on a leash in this area as sheep graze in the surrounding fields (and there are penalties for owners of sheep-worrying dogs).

Ivinghoe Beacon is within sight of Dunstable Downs across the Vale. From the top of the beacon, you see even more brilliant views including the chalk lion on the side of the opposite hill below Whipsnade Zoo. The 95-mile long Ridgeway begins at the beacon, a long-distance trail that follows the spine of the Chilterns to Avebury in Wiltshire.

5. Eastbourne and Beachy Head

Distance from London: Less than a two-hour drive south of London Best for: Seaside strolls and lots of traditional seaside food prospects for you and your pup

Eastbourne is found on one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the South East. You and your lovable pooch can enjoy never-ending expanses of the beach where your pooch can run for miles and feel the breeze.

The town is also situated on the edge of the beautiful South Downs which offers over 600 square miles of unbeatable trails for dogs and humans. There are endless streets of traditional country pubs where your dog can have a bowl of water and rest their paws after lovely country walks, while you sample the local menu.

Beachy Head

The town has a lovely promenade to wander along with your gorgeous hound. Eastbourne has lots of places to buy ice creams or a bag of chips as you take in the trappings of this wonderful seaside resort.

Nearby Beachy Head can be seen from the town, and providing you have a head for heights and your dog can stay at heel, this is a rewarding beauty spot for all. The chalk headland towers above the sea and the sea views are world class.

In Conclusion…

All of these superb dog-friendly places can be reached by car or train from London. However, there are hundreds more places you could choose from, our selection is an inspirational primer to get you started.

A day trip can also work well as a scouting trip for a future, possibly longer visit. All of these places are great destination ideas if you’re planning dog-friendly holidays with friends, family and your dear dog. Plan your dog-friendly day trip out of London today!

"It's so nice to have a website where everything is dog friendly and has been tested by people who actually have dogs. Can’t wait to try another stay soon."

Dog-friendly holidays by the experts

Paws & Stay is a UK dog-friendly travel website created by animal lovers who understand the frustration of “dog-tolerant” accommodation and the joy of a truly dog-friendly place to stay. There’s no need to go scanning all the information about our places to see if it’s ok to bring your dog. It is. In fact, it’s more than ok, it’s welcomed and celebrated. That’s why they’re part of Paws & Stay. In our collection, you'll find dog-friendly cottages in both town and countryside locations, remote dog-friendly cottages in rural areas for nervous or reactive dogs, dog-friendly cabins for a cosy weekend getaway, and also luxury dog-friendly holidays for those special occasions, where your four-legged friend can come along too.

We look for places that go above and beyond for your dog, like places with an enclosed garden or an outdoor tap for muddy paws as well as owners that will welcome them with a treat or two and a scratch behind the ear. Our places are also pretty special for humans too, you'll find things like hot tubs and outdoor baths , BBQs and firepits, and sweeping views from a private deck.

Dog-friendly holidays with Paws & Stay

What makes a holiday truly 'dog friendly'.

We think a great dog-friendly holiday needs a good bit of outdoor space to explore and a great indoor space to relax in. That’s why places on Paws & Stay (although we do love a city pub with a dog menu) will tend to be in the countryside. We put a lot of stock in being able to walk right from your door and having a garden where it’s safe for your dog to be off the lead. You should feel free, either to roam or be at home.

How do you know somewhere is a perfect Paws & Stay place?

We know a Paws & Stay place when we inspect it and love it. Every single place on Paws & Stay has been checked out by one of our team of dog-friendly accommodation experts personally. We like to visit and get a feel for a place, so we can represent it to you accurately and honestly.

What will I find at my Paws & Stay place?

We don’t make sure all our places are the same. Quite the opposite. Whether you're in Cornwall or Herefordshire , we choose our places for character and individuality, celebrating their differences. You’ll find quality and comfort, but in a huge range of styles and settings. We’re as excited by a wonky, rustic cottage as we are by a beautifully-designed Scandi eco home. As long as it’s got a bit of personality and warmly welcomes your dogs and you, it’s a Paws & Stay.

Where can I go with Paws & Stay?

Linguistic oddity aside, that’s a good question. We choose our places carefully to make sure we only work with the truly dog-friendly ones that have a touch of magic about them for humans too. We’re adding great discoveries to our dog-friendly collection all the time and soon we’ll be bringing you dog-friendly holidays from the Lake District to the heart of Devon and everywhere in between.

It also offers stunning walks. Well behaved dogs are only allowed in the car parks and surrounding footpaths. Haywood Nature Reserve is part of these walks offering acres of space for your furry friend to run around in.

5. Hatton Country World

You don’t have to spend every day walking a trail or having a picnic. You can still do some shopping if you prefer. Shopping village Hatton Country World in Hatton allows dogs on a lead only. This applies to Yew Tree Farm Craft Centre in Wootten Wawen and Hoar Park Shopping and Craft Village in Nuneaton.

If you want to visit Shakespeare’s birthplace, Hall’s Croft and Anne Hathway’s Cottage allow dogs in the gardens and they must be on a lead. See the countryside by train. With its numerous cities this area is not the first which springs to mind when thinking of holidays, but with some stunning countryside, woodland walks and countless days out with dogs in the Midlands it’s certainly worth checking out the holiday homes here.

5 Dog-friendly Getaways Within 2 Hours of London

Even though there’s so much to do in London for both you and your doggy companion, sometimes it’s good to get out of the capital and experience what the rest of the UK has to offer for you and your hound.

5 Dog-friendly Getaways within 2 hours of London Belinha in London Bandana

It’s now easier than ever to head away for a few days on a dog-friendly short break, and you don’t even need to travel far to have a great time – there are plenty of places you can stay and explore just two hours from London. Thanks to London’s great transport links, you can even reach many destinations by train and have a car-free holiday!

We’ve teamed up with Canine Cottages , who offer a choice of thousands of dog-friendly holidays across the UK, to reveal five favourite dog-friendly holiday destinations within two hours of the capital.

5 dog-friendly getaways within 2 hours of London

5 Dog-friendly Getaways within 2 hours of London - Whitstable

Get a taste of the seaside, explore beautiful farmland and countryside and discover magnificent castles with your dog by your side in wonderful Kent. Popular seaside retreats such as Whitstable (which featured on the blog earlier this year)  and Margate are reached in around 90 minutes by train, where you can roam along dog-friendly sandy beaches and nostalgic promenades. You can also visit the unmissable White Cliffs of Dover.

For a taste of the countryside, use Royal Tunbridge Wells as your base to explore the High Weald AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), a stunning landscape with plenty of walks through open countryside, past medieval manors and historic houses.

5 Dog-friendly Getaways within 2 hours of London -Kent

Alternatively, you can pay a visit to the cathedral city of Canterbury, where you and your dog can explore historic cobbled streets and marvel at the timber-framed houses.

The Cotswolds

Home to perhaps the perfect examples of quaint English villages, the Cotswolds is perfect for anyone seeking a dog-friendly rural retreat.

During your visit you’ll fall in love with the villages nestled amongst the rolling green hills: clusters of cute cottages made from honey-coloured stone, set amongst peaceful ponds and trickling streams. It’s the perfect place for a walking holiday complete with plenty of dog-friendly pubs to stop at along the way. We also suggest a trip to the Cotswold Water Park, where more than 150 lakes can be found in a 40 square mile area.

5 Dog-friendly Getaways within 2 hours of London - Cotswolds

You can reach the eastern side of the Cotswolds in under two hours either by car or by train, where you’ll find some of the best places to visit and stay in the area, including Woodstock, Burford, Bibury and Chipping Norton.

If you’re looking to escape the crowds, the sprawling landscapes of Suffolk offer the perfect getaway for you and your dog. Like Kent, it has a great blend of coast and countryside but with a completely different feel to it.

There are miles of great coastline to explore, starting from Felixstowe, less than two hours from London, taking in beautiful seaside towns such as Aldeburgh, Southwold and Lowestoft, with gorgeous sandy beaches and lovely long walkies to enjoy.

5 Dog-friendly Getaways within 2 hours of London - Suffolk

Suffolk is also home to some charming market towns such as Ipswich, Eye and Bury St Edmunds, home to a historic abbey and cathedral. If you’re looking for a break that’s a little more off the beaten track, Suffolk may be just the place you’re looking for.

Home to classic seaside resorts such as Brighton, Eastbourne and Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex is perfect for those looking to get away to the coast with plenty going on close by. Brighton is one of the UK’s most dog-friendly cities, where there are several dog-friendly cafes, restaurants, beaches and attractions including museums and even crazy golf. It’s also just an hour away by train, making it one of the more popular holiday destinations for Londoners.

5 Dog-friendly Getaways within 2 hours of London -Sussex

Sussex also offers plenty of other dog-friendly beaches and some amazing walks in its extensive countryside, being home to both the High Weald AONB and the South Downs National Park. The South Downs Way is a great way to take in the sights of the National Park and is sure to be an epic journey for both you and your pooch.

Much of Sussex is reachable in under 2 hours by train – among the other places within easy reach are Hastings (1 hour 20), Arundel (1 hour 20) and Chichester (1 hour 30).

Perfect for lovers of the outdoors, the New Forest is one of the UK’s most underrated National Parks, especially with so many dog-friendly things to do . Picturesque villages are scattered throughout the landscape of rolling moorlands and woodlands, connected by footpaths and trails through some amazing scenery. The Rhinefield Ornamental Drive is one such example, passing through an arboretum, with a deer sanctuary nearby.

5 Dog-friendly Getaways within 2 hours of London - New Forest

The New Forest is also home to its own stretch of unspoilt coast and home to pretty villages and towns such as Lymington, as well as a series of impressive fortresses to check out. It’s extremely dog-friendly thanks to the variety of walks available as well as the pet-friendly places to eat on offer.

The northern edge of the New Forest is drivable in less than two hours, however you can also get the train from London directly to either Brockenhurst, at the heart of the New Forest, in 1 hour 30, or New Milton, on the southern edge, in 1 hour 40.

Where’s your favourite place to go for a dog-friendly break outside of the capital?

Thank you for a very informative article. We have visited many of these places with our little Chloe on driving trips. She is an old lady (will be 15 on Christmas Day) so she does not run nor like the beaches – but she will take short walks in lovely gardens. There are 2 particular places which we have visited and will re-visit in 2019. Cotswold Wildlife Park in Burford ( https://www.cotswoldwildlifepark.co.uk/ ) – the only zoo in the UK which we know, allows dogs! We have been there twice. Of course there are certain areas (eg the Madagascan Walkthrough) where dogs are not allowed (understandably) but pretty much 70% of the zoo and gardens (very nice) dogs are allowed on leash. Helmingham Hall in Stowmarket, Suffolk ( https://www.helmingham.com/ ) – they won 2017 Historic House garden of the year. The gardens are absolutely beautiful. We were there in early May (spring) and apple blossom walks and formal gardens were the highlights of our visit. Dogs are allowed in their amazingly beautiful gardens (yeah, unlike National Trust properties) and walk along the soft manicured grass paths (no hard gravel). Both places have nice cafes and gift shops, but the café services at Helmingham were slow and they ran out of food by the time we got to the serving counter!

' src=

Thanks so much for the feedback and additional suggestions! It’s lovely to hear about yours and Chloe’s adventures The zoo is an interesting one for sure, although I’m not sure what Belinha would think of all the animals! It’s always lovely to hear about pretty gardens that can be enjoyed with dogs so thanks for that tip too! Teresa x

' src=

Brilliant tip about the zoo… we’re heading to Broadway for NY and have a toddler too so this would be an amazing thing to do with both of them… fantastic.

We’ve been with Amber almost everywhere we can in the UK. Bovey Castle in Devon is also a fab place, fancy hotel, which allows dogs and is very family friendly too.

The place I keep going back to is Lavenham however. Been twice and already booked for a spring weekend. Beautiful village, ‘our’ cottage is stunning and of course dog friendly. Could not recommend it more. Here’s some of my tips on the place http://blog.pastabites.co.uk/2017/11/travel-bites-a-few-days-in-lavenham-suffolk.html

Thanks for the tips too Fede! Lavenham looks lovely and definitely one to add to the list x

Fede, you will love the Cotswold Wildlife Park (zoo) – lots of children and some dogs. It has a very nice café with hot food options. The park is clean and has easy to navigate paths (Chloe often travels in her pink pram – she has problems with her 2 front paws after a number of surgeries). We were so pleased when we discovered that the park allowed dogs (unheard of for a zoo). Like you and Amber (she is lovely), unless we travel outside of the UK, all our UK (driving) trips always include our little Chloe (a very well travelled dog!). We have been to Lavenham with Chloe 5 years ago. Have read your blog, very interesting. Agree with you that the traffic in London is insufferably unbearable – we use our car mostly for trips outside of London with Chloe. We belong to the National Trust, English Heritage, Historic Houses and Royal Horticultural Society so we mostly visit dog-friendly places. We prefer EH and HH as they are often dog-friendly, a few NT properties will allow dogs in the gardens, and no RHS garden allows dogs (but some HH gardens are more beautiful than RHS gardens). I have kept a diary of all the places where Chloe has been 🙂

Further Information

Dog friendly tours are subject to a Daily Dog Charge which is charged per dog per walking day. This is to cover additional charges made by the accommodations to cover the cost of cleaning after a dog's stay , which means that you will not be charged any extra fees by your accommodation during your stay.  The Daily Dog Charge also includes the cost of an extra item of luggage for your dog , plus any additional transfer costs that may be incurred getting you to and from your dog-friendly accommodation.

If you plan to walk with two dogs , we are more than happy to waive most of the Daily Dog Charge for the second dog if you can combine their luggage into one bag, reducing it to £5 per day . Please keep in mind that your dogs' joint luggage must abide by our usual weight limit of 20kg per bag for this to be an option.

If you require a second dog bag, please contact us for a quote . There may also be an additional supplement charge if your accommodations charge per dog staying, rather than per room.

Kindly note that 2 dogs is the maximum we can accommodate on our trails.

Accommodation

All dog friendly walking holidays with Contours Walking Holidays have been carefully selected because there is dog friendly accommodation available along the route. However, despite our best efforts, the number of accommodations that welcomes dogs is still very limited and availability can be restricted . As a result, the accommodation that we use may not be our usual choice , but will always be comfortable, clean and provide the best service for you and your dog.

To avoid disappointment, we encourage early booking on all dog friendly holidays .

In order to secure dog friendly accommodation, it may occasionally be necessary to transfer you and your dog from the trail to your accommodation and back again the following morning to resume your walk . Any such transfers required are included in the holiday cost.

Many establishments have different dog friendly policies and you are likely to encounter different arrangements for your dog. Wherever possible, we will arrange for your dog to sleep on the floor of your room, but it may be necessary for your dog to sleep in an en suite bathroom, in a lounge, porch or other allocated room. We do not expect your dog to sleep outside in a kennel.

Dogs are rarely allowed in dining rooms and areas where there is food. For this reason, it may become necessary to leave your dog alone in an allocated room or in your bedroom. To avoid unnecessary stress on your dog and out of respect for the accommodation, your dog should be suitably behaved at all times . For more information, read our leaflet, Responsible Walking With Your Dog, which is included in your holiday pack.

We will do everything that we can to arrange the perfect holiday for you and your dog. On the rare occasion that we cannot find availability, or we encounter other related difficulties, we will contact you immediately to advise you of this and to discuss your options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do i have to take my dog's own food and bedding.

Yes. Neither Contours Walking Holidays nor your accommodations are responsible for feeding your dog or providing bedding. We strongly advise taking enough of your dog's regular food to last for the duration of your walk, as it may not be available along the trail. Our Daily Dog Charge takes into account the additional cost of transferring these items for your dog.

Is there a maximum number of dogs that I can bring on one of your holidays?

Unfortunately, we are only able to cater for two dogs in any walking group.

I have an assistance dog; can I still do one of your holidays?

Assistance dogs have access to areas where other dogs are not allowed, including hotels and land where dogs are otherwise forbidden. For this reason, assistance dogs may not be restricted to dog friendly walking holidays . If you have an assistance dog and are interested in walking one of our trails, please telephone us and we will be more than happy to discuss your requirements and the options available to you.

What should I do if my dog becomes lost?

If you decide to walk one of our dog friendly trails with your dog, you should take every precaution to ensure that your dog stays safe. For more information, read our Responsible Dog Walking booklet included in your holiday pack

What should I do if my dog gets injured?

It can be an upsetting experience to see your dog get injured, but there are steps that you can take to prepare for an emergency should one arise. For more information, read our Responsible Dog Walking booklet included in your holiday pack

What should I do if my dog gets dirty on the walk?

It is inevitable that with mile after mile of countryside to enjoy, your dog will end the day a little muddy. The accommodations that we use work hard to give you the most pleasant environment, so we ask that you pack a towel to wipe your dog clean before arriving at your accommodation.

Will I encounter stiles or other obstructions on a dog friendly walk?

Yes, all of our walks are likely to feature stiles, gateways and uneven surfaces at some stage. Some stiles may not have a dog friendly mechanism and some may require some climbing. For this reason, your dog should be familiar with different stiles , or you should be prepared to lift your dog over them.

How fit should my dog be?

Your dog should be prepared for a long distance walk in much the same way as you should be. Start by gradually building the length and duration of your dog's walk until you think that he or she will be comfortable with the mileage involved. Introduce your dog to the sights and sounds of the countryside, including meeting sheep, scrambling over rocks and crossing stiles.

You should also pay attention to your dog and his or her age. Dogs under 12 months old are still growing and should not be walked for long periods of time . If it looks like your dog is struggling, stop for a rest. The more time you spend training your dog, the more time you will have to appreciate the walk.

If you have any doubts about your dog's ability to walk long distances, contact your vet for advice.

Will I have to keep my dog on a lead?

Legally, dog owners are not required to use a lead on public paths as long as the dog is under control. It is an offence to allow a dog to chase sheep or livestock, so it is strongly advised that dogs are kept on a lead in any area where there are farm animals.

If you have any doubts about your dog's obedience, always use a lead.

Is it necessary to clean up after my dog on a dog friendly trail?

By law, anyone who allows their dog to foul on public land and does not clean up after them could be fined up to £1000. The Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996 does not apply to land used for agriculture, woodlands, marshland, moor or heath, but Contours Walking Holidays strongly suggests that you clean up after your dog at all times .

If you have any further questions or queries, please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to advise you.

Along the South West Coast Path , there are "wide expanses of beaches for splashing about in with abandon", although "the dogs may find the temperatures a little less daunting than the humans", said Good Housekeeping . In need of sustenance? Head for "the 'Garavan', on hand to dispense coffees, drinks and snacks for owners, with water bowls and pet-friendly treats available too".

Dogs are given "beds, bowls, treats, spring water and even grooming products", and the "doormen are ready to dispense bags for walkies or arrange dog sitting", said Country Living . "Tails will be wagging at the idea of so much space on the doorstep", said Good Housekeeping. Every dog receives "its own cosy dog bed in the room, two dog bowls, doggie treats and a dog towel", and there are other canine comforts including "a dog bathtub and shampoo for post-walk washing, a dog agility course, a boot room with spare tennis balls and dog walking maps, and doggy afternoon teas at The Lounge", said The Telegraph.

Across the Thames from Hampton Court Palace, The Mitre has "canine-friendly rooms on the ground floor" with "access to an outdoor terrace", said Condé Nast Traveller, and a welcome pack (bed, bowl, poop bags and treats) on arrival. Dogs can accompany owners to the Coppernose restaurant, "set in a rotunda with Thames views", and there's also a "sizeable river terrace and Orangery space". You'll find "good walks along the footpath past the palace", or next door in Bushy Park, although "be mindful of the deer during rutting season".

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
