How to unlock any T-Mobile phone

Published on October 23, 2023

You might be ready to leave T-Mobile and its Magenta network in your rearview mirror. However, that doesn’t mean you have to give up the phone you bought from the carrier. In fact, it might save you a nice chunk of change to bring that phone along with you when you switch. If you’re ready to keep your device, here’s how to unlock any T-Mobile phone.

QUICK ANSWER

To unlock a T-Mobile phone, first, check on your My T-Mobile account that your phone is eligible. Connect to the T-Mobile network on Wi-Fi and head to Settings-->Network-->Network Unlock . Confirm your decision and restart your device to complete the process.

JUMP TO KEY SECTIONS

Check if your T-Mobile phone is already unlocked

  • General device eligibility

Postpaid eligibility

Prepaid eligibility, other devices.

The T-Mobile logo.

Depending on how long you’ve had your T-Mobile phone, it may already be unlocked. The Un-Carrier isn’t quite as free-wheeling as Verizon when it comes to unlocks, but it doesn’t have the strictest requirements, either. If you’re not sure whether your phone is already unlocked or not, follow these steps:

  • In a web browser, log into your My T-Mobile account and select your line on the Accounts page. Note that this feature is not available in the T-Mobile app.
  • Click on Check device unlock status to see if your phone is already unlocked.

If your phone is already unlocked, you can feel free to load up your SIM and enjoy your new carrier. If not, keep reading for more steps to follow.

Unlock eligibility requirements

t mobile travel unlock

If your phone is not already unlocked, you probably don’t yet meet all of the requirements. T-Mobile has slightly different limitations for its various plans, so you’ll have to follow the information below before starting the process.

General eligibility

No matter which T-Mobile plan you subscribe to, you’ll have to first meet these requirements. They’re pretty similar to those of other carriers and cover the basics. Here are the ground rules:

  • T-Mobile must have sold the device.
  • It cannot be reported as lost, stolen, or blocked.
  • Your account must be in good standing with the carrier.

As long as you’re trying to unlock your own phone that you purchased from T-Mobile and you’ve paid all of your bills, you should be alright.

If you have a postpaid T-Mobile plan, you’ll also have to meet the following requirements:

  • The device must have been active on the T-Mobile network for at least 40 days.
  • If you opted for monthly device payments, it must be paid off in full.
  • If you canceled your account already, it must also have a balance of zero.
  • T-Mobile reserves the right to request proof of purchase or other additional information from you.

If you have a prepaid T-Mobile plan, you’ll have to follow slightly different requirements.

  • You must have activated the device on the T-Mobile network more than 365 days ago.
  • If the device hasn’t been active for a year, it must have had more than $100 in refills during the active period.
  • You cannot unlock more than two mobile devices in 12 months.
  • T-Mobile can once again request proof of purchase or other information from you.

How to unlock a T-Mobile phone

Apple iPhone 14 vs Google Pixel 7

Once you’ve gone through the effort to make sure your T-Mobile phone is eligible, the real fun can begin. There are slightly different steps for each major phone platform, so you’ll have to check the instructions below.

T-Mobile doesn’t discriminate when it comes to Android phones. It offers one of the best selections of any major carrier, thanks to its relationship with OnePlus. However, that also means there are quite a few different instructions to follow, depending on which phone you have in your pocket. We’ll cover most of the main players here.

  • Samsung: Go to Settings –> Connections –> More Connection Settings –> Network Unlock .
  • OnePlus:  Enter Settings –> Wi-Fi & internet –> SIM & network –> Advanced or Network unlock .
  • LG:  Go to Settings –> Network & internet –> Mobile networks –> Network unlock –> Continue .
  • T-Mobile REVVL:  Head to Settings –> Network & Internet –> Mobile network –> Advanced –> Network Unlock .

You’ll also have to select the Permanent Unlock option from the Network Unlock menu, no matter your device. Once it completes the unlock, restart your phone, and you’re free.

While Android devices can make life a little tricky, it’s straightforward to unlock an iPhone on T-Mobile of any shape or size. In fact, it’s more than likely already unlocked. Here are the steps to follow:

  • If your iPhone is eligible, contact T-Mobile , and they will automatically process your request.
  • If your phone already shows as unlocked on My T-Mobile, you can insert your non-T-Mobile SIM and complete the setup process to fully unlock your device.

Those of you without a new SIM already in your possession will have to back up your iPhone, then reset the device and restore your backup. In truth, it’s probably easier to make sure you have your new SIM ahead of time.

There’s a good chance we’ve already covered your phone in one of the above sections. However, if you have a device not mentioned, you can head to T-Mobile’s Devices page for more detailed instructions. If the phone asks for an unlock code, you’ll have to contact customer service to have it provided.

Yes, T-Mobile is happy to let you bring your own device, provided it supports the correct mix of bands. You can check out this page for more information on the carrier’s BYOD policies.

iPhones purchased from T-Mobile remain locked to the network until the requirements listed above are met.

No. While you can check your unlock status online, you will have to go through your phone’s settings menu to complete the process. However, if you need to contact customer service to complete the unlock, you can do so online.

Yes, so there’s a chance you won’t have to lift a finger to unlock your T-Mobile phone. The carrier says it will automatically and remotely unlock any eligible phone within two business days. You can then see your unlock status in your My T-Mobile account.

How do I unlock my T-Mobile phone?

T-Mobile

If you're attached to your current phone but not T-Mobile, then you can unlock your phone and take it to another provider. You'll just have to make sure it's compatible with other networks. If you want to switch to Verizon, then you probably won't have any luck with an unlocked phone; however, if you're switching to AT&T you'll have a better time.

T-Mobile's unlock requirements

You can't just ask T-Mobile to unlock your phone; you must meet certain requirements to request an unlock code.

Here's a rundown of T-Mobile's unlock requirements:

  • You have to have bought your phone from T-Mobile.
  • Your phone can't be reported as lost, stolen, or blocked to T-Mobile.
  • Your account with T-Mobile cannot already be canceled and it must be in good standing (meaning that if you haven't paid your bill in three years, you're probably not getting unlocked).
  • You cannot have requested more than two unlock codes, per line of service, in the last year. So, if you have two phones in your name, you can't have asked for more than four unlock codes.
  • Your phone has to satisfy all of T-Mobile's unlocking terms and conditions .
  • T-Mobile can request proof of purchase and "certain other exceptions may apply." So, don't say anything nasty about Catherine Zeta-Jones.

For those who are on postpaid plans, such as T-Mobile ONE, there are some additional requirements:

  • Your device must have been active on T-Mobile's network for at least 40 days.
  • If the device is financed through T-Mobile's Equipment Installment Plan or JUMP! On Demand, the balance must be fully paid off, "unless otherwise specified".
  • If the handset is on an account that is under a contract term, you are required to make 18 consecutive monthly payments. Or, the account must have been moved to the Simple Choice no-contract rate plan.
  • In the case that the device being requested was on an account that was canceled, the balance of that account must be zero "including all pending charges".

How can I request an unlock code from T-Mobile?

There are a couple of different ways to get an unlock code from T-Mobile. The first and most obvious one is to contact T-Mobile customer service or hit up your nearest T-Mobile store and ask. They make it pretty clear on a few pages of their website that they reserve the right to deny any request.

Android users also have the option to download the Mobile Device Unlock app , which you can use to unlock your phone right on your phone. The best part is that you don't even have to manually enter a code. Once downloaded, you can request and unlock your phone all within the app itself.

Is there a cost involved?

If you meet the eligibility requirements , then unlocking is free. If you're trying to unlock a prepaid phone that's been active for less than a year, you have to have had more than $100 in refills since the device's first use date (not including the initial activation payment).

For non-T-Mobile customers, it's hard to say that T-Mobile has an official stance. You can definitely request an unlock code, but if someone sold you the unit without paying it off, then there will be a balance owed and you will not be able to unlock it without paying for it (prices will vary depending on the balance). That likely also means that the account associated with the phone was not in good standing, and therefore make the phone ineligible, as per the requirements .

If you bought your iPhone or Android phone directly from T-Mobile, the carrier will unlock it for you as long as it meets certain criteria. Having an unlocked phone allows you to use it with any provider who supports that phone. Keep in mind that moving your unlocked phone away from T-Mobile may interfere with certain features—for example, if you enjoyed 5G on T-Mobile's network, other networks may not support 5G for your phone. This wikiHow teaches you how to have your phone unlocked by T-Mobile.

Unlocking Through T-Mobile

Step 1 Find out your phone's status.

  • Go to https://account.t-mobile.com .
  • Sign in with your T-Mobile account info.
  • Click Account .
  • Select the line/phone you want to unlock.
  • Click Check device unlock status under "Device details." If you see "Device unlocked," your phone is already unlocked and can be used with any other compatible carrier. If you see "Device locked," it can only be used on the T-Mobile network (for now).

Step 2 Check the requirements.

  • You bought the phone through T-Mobile.
  • If your phone has JUMP! On Demand and an active Equipment Installment Program (EIP) payment plan, it cannot be unlocked. It is possible that you can buy yourself out of the lease to own the phone—contact T-Mobile to see if you qualify.
  • The IMEI is not blocked. An IMEI is often blocked when a phone is reported lost or stolen, or your installment plan is past due. To check your IMEI, visit https://swappa.com/esn .
  • Postpaid accounts: You must have used your phone for at least 40 days on the line of service and your account must be in good standing.
  • Prepaid accounts: The phone must have been used on this line for at least one year. If you've loaded at least $100 onto this line and every other line on your account since purchasing the phone, you can get around the one-year rule.

Step 3 Find your IMEI.

  • If you're using an Android, see the Using the Android Unlocking Tool method to continue unlocking your phone.
  • If you're using an iPhone, all you'll need to do is get a SIM card from your new provider and insert it into your phone. See How to Put a SIM Card Into an iPhone to learn how.

Using the Android Unlocking Tool

Step 1 Make sure that your phone is already unlocked by T-Mobile.

  • 2019 and later models: Open your Settings app, tap Connections , and then More Connection Settings .
  • 2018 and earlier models: Open the Device Unlock app in the app drawer. If you don't see it, the phone is either from 2019 or later, or already unlocked.
  • OnePlus 6T and newer: Open the Settings app, tap Wi-Fi and Internet , and then tap SIM & network .
  • T-Mobile REVVLRY: Open the Settings app, tap Network & Internet , tap Mobile network , and then Advanced .
  • Google Pixel: You will need to download an app called T-Mobile Device Unlock from the Play Store now. Search for the app in the Play Store and tap Install to download it.
  • Other models: You should see an app called Device Unlock in your app drawer. If you don't see it, the app is either hidden or the phone is already unlocked. [2] X Research source To check for hidden apps, see How to Find Hidden Apps on Android .

Step 3 Tap Network Unlock.

  • Tap your phone in the Devices section.
  • Scroll down and tap Security under "How Tos."
  • Tap Mobile Device Unlock and follow the on-screen instructions. You're all done!
  • If you don't see that option, contact T-Mobile for further instructions.

Step 4 Tap Permanent Unlock.

  • To start using your Android on another network, you'll usually need to purchase a SIM card from that network. See Install a SIM Card in an Android to learn how to install a SIM card.
  • If you were unable to successfully unlock your Android, contact T-Mobile by dialing *611 or 1-877-746-0909.

Expert Q&A

  • If you're in the market for an unlocked phone, check out sites like Gazelle and Swappa, two services that allow people to sell functional, lightly-used phones (current and recent models) safely and securely. Both sites have processes in place to ensure that phones shipped by sellers are in working order. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 0
  • Some (but not all) carriers that are typically compatible with unlocked T-Mobile phones are AT&T, Liberty Wireless, MetroPCS, Republic Wireless, Simple Mobile, Speed Talk Mobile, Ting, and Walmart Family Mobile. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 0

T-Mobile Temporary Unlocks & Activation, How to Use

If you’re a T-Mobile customer, you may find yourself in a situation where you need to temporarily unlock your device in order to use it with a different carrier.

Maybe you’re traveling abroad and want to use a local SIM card to save on roaming fees, or perhaps you’re selling your device and need to demonstrate that it is fully unlocked.

Whatever the reason, T-Mobile does offer a process for obtaining a temporary unlock, but it’s important to understand what this means and how it differs from a permanent unlock.

A temporary unlock allows you to use your T-Mobile device with another carrier on a short-term basis, typically for a period of 90 days.

This means that after 90 days, your device will automatically re-lock to the T-Mobile network, and you’ll need to request another temporary unlock if you still want to use a different carrier.

A permanent unlock, on the other hand, removes the lock on your device permanently, allowing you to use it with any carrier you choose without any time restrictions.

It’s worth noting that not all T-Mobile devices are eligible for temporary unlocks. Generally, devices that have been active on the T-Mobile network for at least 40 days and are in good standing are eligible, but there are some exceptions.

You can check the eligibility of your device by logging into your T-Mobile account or contacting T-Mobile customer support.

The Process for Obtaining a T-Mobile Temporary Unlock

If you’ve determined that your device is eligible for a temporary unlock, here’s what you need to do to request one:

  • Gather the necessary documentation: T-Mobile requires you to provide certain documentation in order to process your temporary unlock request. This may include a government-issued ID, proof of ownership (such as a bill of sale or insurance document), and, in some cases, a letter of authorization if you’re not the primary account holder.
  • Submit Your Request: There are a few different ways to submit your temporary unlock request to T-Mobile. You can do it online by logging into your T-Mobile account and navigating to the device unlock section, or you can call T-Mobile customer support and request an unlock that way. You can also visit a T-Mobile retail store in person and request an unlock there.
  • Wait for Processing: Once you’ve submitted your request, T-Mobile will review it and determine whether to approve or deny it. This process can take up to 2 business days, although in some cases it may be faster. You’ll receive notification via email or SMS when the decision has been made.
  • Unlock your Device: If your request is approved, T-Mobile will provide you with the necessary instructions for unlocking your device. This may involve entering a code or connecting your device to a computer and following a series of steps. Make sure to carefully follow these instructions, as any mistakes could cause issues with your unlock.
  • Use your Unlocked Device: Once your device is successfully unlocked, you can use it with a different carrier by inserting a new SIM card. Keep in mind that your device will automatically re-lock to the T-Mobile network after 90 days, so you’ll need to request another temporary unlock if you want to continue using a different carrier.

Tips and Best Practices for Ensuring a Successful Temporary Unlock Request

While the process for requesting a T-Mobile temporary unlock is generally straightforward, there are a few things you can do to improve your chances of success:

  • Make Sure Your Device is Eligible: As mentioned earlier, not all T-Mobile devices are eligible for temporary unlocks. Double-check that your device meets the eligibility requirements before submitting your request.
  • Gather All Necessary Documentation: T-Mobile will require certain documentation in order to process your request, so make sure you have everything you need before submitting your request. This may include a government-issued ID, proof of ownership, and a letter of authorization (if applicable).
  • Double-Check Your Request: Before submitting your temporary unlock request, make sure to double-check all the information you’ve provided. Any mistakes or errors could cause delays or even result in your request being denied.
  • Consider Using a Third-Party Unlocking Service: If you’re having difficulty obtaining a temporary unlock from T-Mobile, or if you want a more permanent solution, you might consider using a third-party unlocking service. These companies can often unlock your device for a fee, and the process is typically faster than going through T-Mobile. Just be sure to research the company and ensure that they are reputable before proceeding.

Alternative Options for Unlocking Your T-Mobile Device

If you’re unable to obtain a temporary unlock from T-Mobile, or if you want a more permanent solution, there are a few alternative options you might consider:

International Plans: If you’re planning to use your T-Mobile device abroad, you might consider signing up for an international plan.

These plans often include the option to use your device with a local SIM card while abroad, and you won’t need to worry about re-locking after 90 days.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Plans: If you want the freedom to use your T-Mobile device with any carrier you choose, you might consider switching to a bring your own device (BYOD) plan.

These plans allow you to use your own, unlocked device with a new carrier, and you won’t need to worry about requesting temporary unlocks in the future.

In summary, T-Mobile does offer a process for obtaining a temporary unlock, which allows you to use your T-Mobile device with another carrier for a period of 90 days.

While the process is generally straightforward, there are a few things you can do to improve your chances of success, such as gathering all necessary documentation and double-checking your request.

If you’re unable to obtain a temporary unlock or if you want a more permanent solution, there are alternative options available, such as international plans and BYOD plans.

If you’re ready to proceed with a temporary unlock, we recommend following the steps outlined in this article and contacting T-Mobile customer support for assistance. Good luck!
