dream of tours

I am a corporate event planner who had to book two private shuttles for my group for multiple stops and pick-ups. Green Dream Tours was amazing from start to finish. They were reliable, professional and timely! They were also priced well and reasonably without compromising their service. Their drivers were awesome and their buses beautiful. BOOK THEM, you can't go wrong!!

From the first phone calls with Holly and Erin, I knew I had chosen well. They promptly responded to every question via phone or email, and believe me I had plenty! We were in town for a convention, and I was planning a tour for five couples from all across Canada. Our wineries were fabulous and our picnic lunch delicious. There are so many wineries to choose from so I leaned on Holly and Erin to help me select a variety that pleased all of us. Their attention to detail is fabulous so I absolutely recommend this company. Thanks again Green Dream Tours!

What an amazing day we had with Green Dream Tours! Everything from the logistics of coordinating the tastings and lunch and transportation, to staying on budget, was taken care of for over 50 people. The transportation was super comfortable, the driver was safe and courteous, and our guide Nicole rocked! It is nice when an organization is so professional to work with and accommodating. Already planning another event for next year!

What are Small Group Adventure Tours?

Small group tours take care of the planning and logistics of travel, so that you can focus on the experience. They make travel more attainable and affordable, with tour styles at a variety of price points. Adventure tours also take away some of the stresses of traveling solo or to off-the-beaten-path places.

I started out traveling with small group tours, and it gave me the experience and confidence I needed to travel solo later. This is my #1 tip for anyone who wants to get started traveling!

Two of my favorite adventure travel companies are G Adventures and Intrepid Travel. Read my reviews of adventure tour companies to find out why there’s a small group trip right for you.

A Tour? Really?

Yes! These are small group tours based on authentic experiences, not buses depositing you at the Grand Canyon. Plus no one will ever know from your selfies that you’re on a tour. It’ll be your secret when your trip mates help you get the perfect shot at Machu Picchu.

Trip Styles

In this guide, the tours I recommend will fall into the categories below. Keep in mind that the tours generally don’t include meals or airfare (but I have some airfare hacks for you later in the article) :

  • “Original” or “Classic” tours:  budget to mid-range tours for all adult travelers
  • “Basic” tours for 18 to thirty-somethings: budget itineraries geared toward younger travelers with active adventures
  • “Family” tours: geared toward families or parents with children or teenagers, with family accommodation and itineraries
  • “Sailing” tours: yes, for real – there are affordable sailing adventures in many coastal destinations!

Dream Destinations in the Americas

Machu Picchu, Peru | History & Adventure Dream Destination

UNESCO site and “New World Wonder” Machu Picchu is one of the top dream destinations for many travelers. This Inca city was built in the 15th century but later abandoned. It was lost to the outside world for centuries until “rediscovered” by historian and explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911.  Perched high in the Andes, Machu Picchu is mysterious and iconic.  Get the best views of its green terraces and preserved stone buildings from the peak of Huayna Picchu, which a limited number of travelers can climb each day.

The best time to visit Machu Picchu is in June – September during the dry winter season, although travelers who want smaller crowds and greener landscape can visit when I did, at the beginning of the rainy season in October – November.

Most visitors reach Machu Picchu by train.  But in the last 20 years, hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu has become a rite of passage for adventure travelers.  I trekked with my sister, and it was one of my most challenging yet ultimately fulfilling adventures yet!

Discover the mysteries of Machu Picchu yourself with these tour options from $1257:

Mexico: Maya Ruins & Day of the Dead | Bucket List Destination for Culture & History

Best Mexico Ruins - Mayan Ruins of Chichen Itza - Pyramid of Kukulkan

Mexico is one of my own favorite travel destinations, with stunning natural landscapes, rich culture and history, and fantastic regional cuisines.  Two Mexico attractions in particular are bucket list items for many travelers: seeing Mayan ruins and experiencing the Dia de los Muertos festival.

Mayan ruins stretch from sites in Cancun throughout the Yucatan Peninsula, with Mexico’s most famous being Chichen Itza, seaside ruins at Tulum , and Palenque set deep in the jungle. There are even ruins you can climb at Ek Balam near Valladolid .

The annual Day of the Dead festival is celebrated at the end of October each year. In particular, Oaxaca and Mexico City are popular places to experience the holiday.  In Mexico City, explore Day of the Dead history and traditions including street festivities and the famous parade.  For Dia de los Muertos in Oaxaca , learn about the holiday’s history and culture with traditional cemetery vigils, local parades, and visits to the surrounding villages.

Immerse yourself in Mexico’s history and culture with these tours starting from $1222:

Galapagos Islands | Nature Dream Destination

The Galapagos Islands are known for their diversity of plant and animal species, including many not found anywhere else in the world. For true nature and adventure travelers, visiting the Galapagos is at the top of their dream places to visit. See sea lions, tortoises, marine iguanas, and an array of birds, plus experience active hiking and fantastic snorkeling in one of the world’s most special destinations.

Check out these pared-down affordable itineraries to make your Galapagos dreams a reality, starting from just $1799:

Bali, Indonesia | Beaches, Temples & Culture

Bali is a dream destination for so many travelers.  Known as the Island of the Gods, Bali has long been a place for people seeking balance through meditation and yoga.  It’s also a popular destination for surfing and active adventures.  Explore volcanoes, tour ancient temples, and relax on its beaches: white sand in the south, and black sand on the northern and eastern coasts.

Much of the tourism in Bali is centered around its cultural capital, Ubud. But throughout the island you’ll discover ornate Hindu temples, lush landscapes, and friendly people. The best time to visit Bali is the dry season, April through October; avoid the rainy season October – March.

I was lucky to get to see Bali’s green rice terraces, Monkey Forest, temples, and waterfalls, as well as beaches and snorkeling in the Nusa islands.  If you’re looking for a destination with nature, culture and adventure, Bali belongs on your bucket list too!

Bliss out on the beaches of Bali and its close neighbor Lombok with these dream destination itineraries starting from $1089:

Maldives: Beaches Dream Vacation Spot

It’s hard to think of a travel spot more iconic than the Maldives: a remote tropical paradise with overwater bungalows (ranging from luxury bungalows to affordable water villas !) and unspoiled white sand beaches.  Made up of over 1,000 islands, the Republic of Maldives is a haven for travelers who want to swim, snorkel, scuba, and relax on secluded beaches.  The Maldives are a popular honeymoon destination, but there’s no reason to wait to check this destination off your bucket list.

Make everyone you know jelly with your Tiktoks from the Maldives. Set off on a liveaboard cruise on a traditional dhoni sailboat priced from $1350:

Vietnam | Classic Backpacking Destination

photo of Halong Bay in Vietnam with karst formations

Vietnam has become a major Asia travel and backpacking destination thanks to its gorgeous natural landscapes, busy cities, and rich cultural and historical sites.

The country is flanked by rugged mountains bordering Laos and Cambodia in the West, the South China Sea to the East, and the Red and Mekong Rivers in the North and South.  You’ll want to see the colonial architecture of Hoi An, vibrant Ho Chi Minh City, and the dramatic karst scenery and floating villages of Halong Bay.

Vietnam is over 1,000 miles long and the climate varies widely by region, from temperate in the north to a tropical climate in the south.  This makes planning a visit tricky, but generally the best time to visit is spring, from March – April, or October.  Generally, Vietnam has two monsoon seasons, between October and March in the northeast and between April and October everywhere but the mountains.

Go crazy pho Vietnam (pun alert) with these affordable tours starting at $862:

Classic Vietnam | Vietnam Family Holiday with Teenagers

Thailand | Temples, Beaches & Friendly People

Dream destinations - Thailand

A Thailand and Cambodia trip with G Adventures (then Gap Adventures) was the start of my travel addiction! I always recommend Thailand as a good destination for new travelers. It’s an easy place to travel, including on a budget, and has long been a popular destination on the Asia backpacker trail.

Bustling Bangkok is a must-see, with its iconic temples, canals, tuk tuk rides, and street food. Thailand’s north has its own treasures: ancient capitals, elephant conservation, and experiencing the Thai way of life in local villages. And of course, Thailand’s beaches like Phuket, Ko Phi Phi, and Krabi are the perfect way to end a trip.

The best time to visit Thailand is between November and early April. This is the driest time of year, since the rainy season runs from July – October.

Plan an adventure in the Land of Smiles with these budget tour options starting at $824:

Bangkok to Chiang Mai Express | Thailand Island Hopping | Thailand Family Holiday

Cambodia | History + Iconic Temples

Dream places to visit - Cambodia

Cambodia is home to the temples of Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world. Exploring here feels like stepping back in time, discovering the Khmer temples deep in the jungle. Reliefs and statues seem to tell ancient stories, and tree roots have reclaimed some of the temples, including “Ta Prohm” made famous by Tomb Raider.

Cambodia’s tumultuous recent past can be felt in its capital of Phnom Penh. The brutal Khmer Rouge, a Marxist regime in power from 1975-1979, claimed the lives of up to two million people. Much of the tourism in the capital is centered on this, but it gives an important context to country’s past and the spirit of the Cambodian people.

Along with Machu Picchu, Petra, and the Mayan ruins at Tikal, the temples of Angkor Wat belong on the bucket list of every adventure traveler. Try to visit for sunrise if you can!

Many Cambodia itineraries begin in Vietnam and end in Thailand, which lets you experience the history and culture of the overall region. Check out these super-affordable options starting from $689:

Uzbekistan & The Silk Road | The OG Adventure Route

photo of blue tiled tombs at Gur-e Amir in Samarkand

When I visited Uzbekistan, following in the footsteps of Marco Polo along the Silk Road, I truly felt I had become a traveler.  The Silk Road connected eastern China to what is now western Turkey, a 4,000-mile passage that connected East with West for more than 1500 years.

Uzbekistan sits in the middle of this route, and includes the ancient cities of Khiva, Bukhara, and Samarkand.  In the last few years, Uzbekistan has again begun embracing tourism. It’s welcoming travelers to discover its intricately-tiled blue-domed mosques, colorful bazaars with carpets and pottery, and traditional cuisines of plov and shashlik.

The best time to visit Uzbekistan is during spring from April to May, when weather is temperate and flowering trees bloom.  And again in autumn, from September to early November.  It’s best to avoid the summer, when temperatures soar to over 100F.

I loved the history, people, and cuisine of Uzbekistan. Set off on your own Silk Road adventure with these tours from $1399:

Jaipur, India | Culture & Photography Dream Destination

photo of the pink city of Jaipur in India

India has long been a classic journey for travelers, with its array of hectic cities, bustling markets, history sites, and holy places.  And in a country full of colors, Jaipur, known as the “Pink City,” is a photographer’s dream.

But with so many more things to explore – the Taj Mahal, rural life in Rajasthan, the heart of Hinduism in Varanasi, and temples across the landscape – a full trip to India should be on every traveler’s dream places to visit.

The best time to visit most of India is during the cool, dry season, between November and March.  But the country is large, so temperatures can vary by region.  Many travelers wish to visit for the colorful festival of Holi, which occurs in most cities on the day after the full moon in March.

Delve into the history, cuisine, and spiritualism of India (with a side of Bollywood and iconic photo ops) on these budget tours starting from just $639:

Golden Triangle | Essential India

Sri Lanka | Nature & Culture Bucket List Destination

Sri Lanka - Bucket List Destinations

This island nation might be small, but there is a bounty of nature, history, and beauty among the best places to visit in Sri Lanka .  Located just off the Southeast tip of India, Sri Lanka is a destination for beaches, jungles, temples, and wildlife.

A trip to Sri Lanka offers the chance to see elephants in their natural habitat at the country’s national parks.  Visit spice and tea plantations in the central hill country, spend time in colonial towns, and explore temples with thousands of years of human history.  Sri Lanka’s coasts are the perfect place to snorkel and relax on the beach at the end of a trip.

The best time to visit Sri Lanka varies by region: for the southwest coast, visit between December to March, before the monsoon season.  In the East, visit from May – September for less humid weather.

Discover the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’ with these tours, priced from $977:

Dream Travel Destinations in Europe

Ireland | History, Landscapes & Culture

So many travelers have Ireland on their bucket list!  Known as the Emerald Isle due to its green landscapes, Ireland was home to writers like Yeats, Joyce and Wilde.  Top Ireland sights include the capital Dublin, the picturesque Ring of Kerry, and dramatic scenery of the Cliffs of Moher and Giant’s Causeway.

Ireland has a maritime climate, with relatively mild winters and summer temperatures in the 70’s.  The best time to visit is from April through until September, but expect rain and cool weather even then!

I haven’t yet been to Ireland. But having met travelers from Ireland around the globe, I definitely want to visit its friendly people and beautiful landscapes.

Getaway to the “land of Saints and Scholars” with these itineraries starting from $2599:

Santorini, Greece | Top Dream Vacation Destination

photo of houses on the hillside in Santorini Greece

Santorini is a dream island vacation destination in Greece, located halfway between Athens and Crete.  Part of the Cyclades Islands in the Aegean Sea, Santorini is best known for its whitewashed cliff top villages with sweeping views of the azure sea.

But the sea below hides a secret: there was once a single island here until a 16th century BCE volcanic eruption.  The resulting caldera, or crater, is now mostly-submerged and surrounded by dramatic cliffs, picturesque towns, and volcanic sand beaches.

Most visitors to Santorini stay on its largest island of Thira in the towns of Fira, its capital, or best-known Oia.  But there are many wonders to discover here, including the ancient ruins of 3 civilizations like the Minoan town of Akrotiri, black and red sand volcanic beaches, fantastic local wines, and hikes for views of the caldera.

The best time to visit for warm weather and fewer crowds is April to May and September to October.

Got Santorini or Greece on your bucket list?  Make it happen with these tours including sailing trips starting from $1679:

Best of Greece | Sailing Greece | Athens to Santorini | Ancient Ruins & Iconic Islands

Italy: Rome & Amalfi Coast | History & Landscapes Bucket List

photo of Positano Italy Amalfi Coast - houses on the cliffside

Is there anyone who doesn’t have Italy on their bucket list?  The sights of Rome and charming towns of the Amalfi Coast are some of the most-lusted-after spots in Italy and the world!

In Rome, must-see sights of course include the Colosseum, Sistine Chapel, and Trevi Fountain, as well as amazing food, wine, and world-class art.  The Amalfi Coast has hiking for wooded and coastal views, cliffs lined with colorful Mediterranean architecture, and beaches framed by picturesque towns.

The best months for Italy travel are from April to June and mid-September to October, when temperatures are mild and crowds are less.

Escape to your dream destination of Italy with these tours priced from $1574:

Tuscany to Cinque Terre | Local Living San Gimignano | Exploring the Amalfi Coast | Italy Real Food Adventure | Sailing Italy to Croatia

Budapest, Hungary | History & Culture Dream Destination

photo of the House of Parliament in Budapest Italy at sunset

Budapest has jumped to the top of many bucket lists in the last few years.  Bisected by the Danube River, its regions of Buda and Pest are connected by eight bridges, including the iconic 19th-century Chain Bridge.

In Buda, take a funicular to the top of Castle Hill to reach Old Town. Then explore sights like Buda Castle, St. Mattias Church, and Fisherman’s Bastion, a turreted fortress with city views.

In Pest, visit the Hungarian Parliament, Great Market Hall for snacks and souvenirs, and the Shoes on the Danube memorial.  Be sure to also see St. Stephen’s Basilica including climbing (or taking the elevator) to the top for views of the city.

Throughout Budapest you’ll also find ruin pubs, the city’s famous hidden bars in abandoned buildings, and historic thermal baths fed by the more than 100 hot springs beneath the city.  The two most popular are the outdoor Szechenyi Baths and indoor Gellert Thermal Bath. The latter is also a prime example of ornate Art Nouveau architecture found throughout the city.

The best time to visit Budapest is between April to September for warm weather. However, I loved visiting in December for Christmas markets and cold weather perfect for the Szechenyi Baths!

Try these tour itineraries for experiencing the best of Budapest and the region, starting from $1349:

Portugal | Dream Destination for Beaches, History & Foodies

Named as the Travel + Leisure “Destination of the Year” in 2016, Portugal has seen an explosion of travel in the last few years.  But for good reason: it’s a quick flight within Europe or from the East Coast of the US, and appeals to foodies, culture lovers, wine connoisseurs, and beach-goers.

Be sure to visit the historic sights in the capital of Lisbon, fairytale palaces of Sintra and Obidos , and tiled churches and port wine houses in Porto. And don’t miss Portugal’s gorgeous Algarve beaches .

The best time to visit Portugal is from March – May, when spring flowers begin to bloom and the crowds are less.  Or visit in autumn in September – October, when days are still warm, the countryside turns golden, and wine grapes are harvested in the Douro Valley .

Discover the history, culture and cuisine of Portugal with these tour options, from $1407:

Scotland | Top Dream Country to Visit

Scotland has always been a bucket-list favorite for many travelers. Now, so many more are dreaming of Scotland after getting hooked on Outlander!

Delve into history in Edinburgh with its famous castle, and stroll the shops and restaurants of the famous Royal Mile to the 16th-century Palace of Holyroodhouse.  Hike to Arthur’s Seat for panoramic views of the city and tour the National Museum of Scotland.  In Glasgow, explore its museums, music scene, and Victorian and art nouveau architecture.

But no trip to Scotland is complete without the Highlands and the Isle of Skye for history and stunning landscapes.  Tour the iconic Eilan Donan castle, see the infamous Loch Ness, and visit Culloden Moor, the site of the Jacobite rising of 1745.

Stay in the picturesque town of Portree, hike the iconic Old Man of Storr, and witness the stunning natural beauty of Scotland at Kilt Rock and Glen Coe.  And don’t forget a whisky distillery tour!  Be ready to take a million photos – when I visited Skye, the scenery was more beautiful with each step I took.

Scotland’s busy tourist season in summer is also its rainy season.  The famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the world’s largest arts festival, is held each August.  I visited in September and had many sunny days,. I recommend the spring or early fall as a great time to visit for less crowds.

I visited Edinburgh for work and then extended my trip with a tour to the Isle of Skye. There are several short break options like this, and Scotland’s local tour operators have the best ratings I’ve seen in all of my travels. Check out this 3-day Skye and Highlands tour or this 5-day Best of Scotland from Edinburgh .

Most tourists here choose to follow the scenic “Golden Circle” loop, visiting geothermal springs and geysers, the waterfall of Gullfoss, volcanic black sand beaches, and Skaftafell National Park to hike Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier.

For hiking, the best time to visit Iceland is in summer, when midnight sun and warmer temperatures prevail. But to see the Northern Lights, February, March, September and October are typically the best time to visit Iceland.

Escape to the “land of fire and ice” with these Iceland tour options priced from $899:

Dubrovnik, Croatia | Bucket List Beauty & Charm

photo of Dubrovnik Croatia on the Adriatic Coast

Dubrovnik landed on everybody’s bucket lists thanks to Game of Thrones, where it served as the fictional city of King’s Landing.  But Dubrovnik, and Croatia as a whole, does look straight out of a fairy tale even without any CGI!

Nicknamed the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” the Old Town of Dubrovnik is full of cobblestone streets, palaces, and churches, all located within medieval city walls.  Just outside the city, Dubrovnik’s Adriatic beaches make for a good day trip, as does Lokrum Island, with a monastery, botanical garden, and beaches of its own.

Dubrovnik itineraries often include Split, Korcula, and Hvar, more maritime cities brimming with history, charm, and architecture.

The best time to visit is in May and June or September and October when the weather is sunny and perfect for swimming; avoid the busiest tourist season of July and August.

Fall under Croatia’s spell with these affordable tour options priced from just $1099:

Sailing Croatia | Explore Croatia | Zagreb to Dubrovnik [18-39]

Georgia | Culture & Nature Dream Destination

photo of Tbilisi Georgia

The buzz about Georgia (the country) as a travel destination has been growing among travelers and Instagrammers.  Located at the intersection of Europe and Asia, the Caucasus region has a wealth of cultural, natural, and foodie experiences to explore.

Wander the cobblestone maze of streets that make up the capital Tbilisi, tour a 12th century monastery, and hike on a glacier, then indulge each evening with Georgian food and wine.  (If you haven’t yet discovered buttery, cheesy khachapuri bread, here’s a recipe to make it from home!)

The best time to visit Georgia is April to May for adventuring in comfortable temperatures, or in September and October for autumn color.  Some tours of Georgia also include neighboring Armenia to fully explore the region.

Check out these affordable tour options starting from $1749:

Georgia Adventure | Best of Georgia & Armenia

Egypt | unesco sites & beaches bucket list.

photo of the Great Pyramids in Cairo Egypt - bucket list destinations

Egypt is home to one of the world’s earliest civilizations and seven UNESCO-designated world heritage sites.  It’s known, of course, for its history and ancient archaeological treasures including the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx.  But some travelers might not realize that it is also famous for its beach resorts and scuba diving!

Travelers to Egypt must visit the buzzing capital of Cairo, the pyramids at Giza, and Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, where treasures from ancient tombs and even mummies themselves are on display.

But it’s also possible to sail down the Nile en route to see the Valley of the Kings at Luxor.  Then a stop at the Red Sea for some beach time before heading back to Cairo is the perfect way to round out a trip.

Egypt is a destination that I would recommend to be seen with a tour, both based on current travel warnings and because an experienced guide can give important context for history and culture.

Egypt’s weather is sunny year-round. The best times to visit for more comfortable temperatures and fewer tourists are the shoulder seasons, from March to April and October to November.  Winter is the busiest tourist season.

Set off on a journey through history with these Egypt tour options starting at $879:

Petra and the Dead Sea, Jordan | History & Adventure Travel

photo of the Treasury carved into the rock face in the ancient city of Petra Jordan - dream destinations

After seeing the ancient city of Petra everywhere from travel ads to National Geographic and Indiana Jones, I had Jordan at the top of my own bucket list for a long time.  And when I finally got to visit, Jordan was even more awe-inspiring than I could have imagined.

Bucket-list sights in Jordan include the ancient Roman town of Jerash, floating in the Dead Sea (yes, it works!) , and visiting the lost city of Petra.  Add on an overnight in a Bedouin camp in the desert, and your adventure-meter will be full.  Also the food is spectacular: you’ll never be happy with grocery-store hummus again!

I traveled to Jordan on my own, but it’s definitely a destination I recommend to visit on a tour or with a buddy. It helps to split the costs, plus women travelers tend to get a lot of attention.  (Not problems per say, just leering, comments, and offers of marriage.)

The best time to visit Jordan are spring from March to May or fall from September to November, when the days are warm but nights are cool.

Visit Jordan’s wonders including the “Rose Red City” of Petra with tours starting at just $1299:

Dream Destinations in Africa

Morocco | culture & adventure travel destination.

photo of travelers riding camels on orange sand dunes in the Sahara Desert - dream places to visit

I am not alone in counting Morocco as one of my favorite destinations.  Its mix of cultures, historical sites, and landscapes have made it a top spot for adventure travelers the world over.

Tour Roman ruins and labyrinthine medinas, then sip mint tea overlooking landscapes out of movies and picture books.  Many tours to Morocco include an overnight in the Sahara via camel, which is one of my top travel adventures to date!

Be sure also to explore the souks and squares of Marrakech, and its idyllic Majorelle Gardens.

Morocco is definitely a destination where I recommend a tour, to bridge the cultural and language barriers. Plus, overland transport with a small group tour is significantly easier than arranging it on your own or renting a car.

Set off on the adventure of a lifetime in Morocco with these itineraries starting from $659, including the Best of Morocco tour which I chose:

Morocco Kasbahs & Desert | Best of Morocco | Morocco Family Journey

Kruger National Park, South Africa | Dream Safari Destination

photo of a giraffe in Kruger National Park - dream destinations

Every traveler I know has a safari on their list of dream destinations.  One of the most iconic safari spots is Kruger National Park, a game reserve located in South Africa.

Here you can spot the “Big Five,” as the top five game animals are called: lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.  Enjoy South African cuisine under the stars, head out on game spotting drives and nature walks with naturalist guides, and retire to a comfortable safari lodge.

The best time to visit Kruger National Park is at the beginning or end of the region’s dry season, between April and September. Temperatures during this time are mostly pleasant, with overnight lows in the 40s and daytime highs occasionally reaching into the mid-80s.

Typically, safari experiences don’t come cheap: in addition to offering all-inclusive once-in-a-lifetime experiences, safari operators often fund conservation projects.  But forgoing the typical “luxury” additions of a safari trip can put it within reach for many more travelers.

Check out these pared down experiences with all of the excitement but less of the sticker-shock of a typical safari, starting from $1312:

Dream Travel Destinations in Oceania

New zealand | nature dream destination.

photo of New Zealand - dream destinations

New Zealand made its way onto many bucket lists thanks to the gorgeous scenery of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies.  But many travelers don’t know that there are two islands here to discover.

New Zealand’s South Island has mountain ranges, glaciers, and forests. While the North is renowned for gorgeous coastlines, geothermal springs, and glowworm caves.  The country also has attractions that allow visitors to explore its indigenous Maori culture and history.  Do I even need to mention NZ’s friendly people and world-famous wines?

The best time to visit New Zealand is during their summer months of December to March, when sunny temperate days provide the perfect setting for visiting beaches and hiking.   I haven’t yet checked New Zealand off my bucket list, but my sister traveled there with G Adventures and had the most amazing trip!

Get to know the charming Kiwis and their stunning country with these tours starting at $1715:

Antarctica | Ultimate Bucket List Adventure

Bucket List Destinations - Antarctica

For adventurers, Antarctica is truly the ultimate dream destination. Visiting the most uninhabited place on earth offers the chance to see sea lions, orcas, humpback whales, and many types of penguins against an otherworldly landscape.

Most Antarctic expeditions begin at the southern tip of Chile, literally the end of the world. Voyage by ship through the Drake Passage, a notorious body of water that stretches across 500 miles between Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands. It’s known for being some of the roughest seas in the world.

Most voyages make landfall in Antarctica at least once, giving you the chance to walk among penguins and sea lions, or hike up for views of glaciers and icebergs. And there are daily “Zodiac” trips, smaller inflatable craft that get you close-up with wildlife and icebergs.

The crew on Antarctic ships includes experts in marine biology, geology, and more, who share their knowledge along the journey. The ships themselves typically offer a bar, library, gym, pool, sauna, and more, to include a bit of comfort along with your once-in-a-lifetime adventure!

A journey to the Great White Continent takes a lot of planning and prep, including an Antarctic packing list and gear. Check out these itineraries from Intrepid Travel, starting from $5795:

Tips to Save on Airfare

You’re probably saying, OK Adrienne, these tours are not a million dollars, but how am I going to get there?

Believe me, I know that one of the most expensive parts of travel is airfare! So if you’re interested in a destination, start researching flight prices now to get an idea of what the average costs are.

Flight Searches and Alerts

My favorite flight search engines are Google Flights and Momondo because they also show trends. I always recommend booking direct with the airline rather than a third-party platform like Expedia, to make it easier to select seats, be clear on baggage allowances, etc. Especially now, I think it’s better to deal directly with the airlines in case of flight schedule changes or cancellations.

You can also set up flight alerts with search engines like Kayak or TripAdvisor to keep a eye on prices.

Gounf [Formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights]

Another great resource for flight deals is Going. Sign up for their free email alerts, and get notifications for deals from your local airports. (There’s also a paid service that gives you mistake fare deals, but the free one works great for most travelers.)

Turkish Airlines Layovers & Stopovers

If your home airport is served by Turkish Airlines, be sure to check their flight pricing. By flying through their Istanbul hub, it often makes flights very affordable. You can even schedule a long layover or stopover (a day or more) without an additional charge. Check out the perks they offer for free layover tours or stopover hotels – it’s an easy way to get more from your travel dollars.

Tarie Harris loved our service so much, she used it to plan Italy trips two years in row and is back for 2023:

Thank you for referring us to your travel planner and her team for our trip to Lake Como, Torino and the Piemonte area last fall. The accommodations, guides and drivers were all amazing. The team customized the trip for us based on our interests. They arranged visits with artist’s at their studios, horseback riding, winery visits, museums, gardens, etc. There were no requests they couldn’t fulfill. The rooms your planners booked at the hotels, inns and castles, provided very interesting and unique experiences. The local guides were exceptional. They were very knowledgeable and presented information in an interesting and useful way. The drivers were polite and courteous. As you know, we were so pleased with you referral that we have started planning our next trip to southern Italy with with them. I am so happy that you offer this service. Great job!

The Wave Tour - hike the 6-8 miles of Coyote Buttes North and the Wave

  • Trip Details

Private Tour Upgrade Available?

Tour length, departure times, difficulty (1-10), recommended abilities, attractions, special interests, these faqs are specific to this tour. if you would like to view our general faqs click here ..

1. How difficult is the hike to the Wave? The round-trip hike is just over 6 miles (9.5 kilometers) if you take the most direct route to the Wave and back. Our tours typically cover about 8 miles so we can visit other spectacular sites. There are long stretches of deep sand to trudge through and an elevation gain of about 500 feet on the trek. There are a few steep inclines, loose footing, and often you will be hiking on uneven sandstone with one foot higher than the other while you hug the side of a steep sandstone ridge. Decent cardio fitness, leg strength, some amount of endurance and good balance are needed. Harsh weather is another factor to consider. This is a particularly windy spot that makes the winter chill even colder. Ice and snow make the uneven hike quite slippery. In the summer, the sun is relentless, heating the ground until the radiant heat rises from the earth while the sun shines from above. There is virtually no shade.

2. How do I get a Wave permit? In March of 2021 the BLM radically increased the number of permits issued to 64 permits for 64 people, or 16 groups, whichever comes first. 48 of those permits, or 12 groups, whichever comes first, are issued via an online lottery 3-4 months in advance.  Only 16 permits for 16 people, or permits for 4 groups, whichever comes first, are issued the day before at the walk-in lottery. All of the specifics of the permit process are explained HERE .

3. Can I book a Wave tour without a permit? Yes, you can book book a Wave tour with us even if you do not have a North Coyote Buttes permit. Our booking system will ask whether you have a permit; simply answer, “no.” We will enter the in-person lottery on your behalf the day before your trip to try to get you a permit. The odds of winning are less than 10%. If we don’t score a Wave permit, your tour will visit one of two alternates: South Coyote Buttes or White Pocket.  South Coyote Buttes also requires a permit though it tends to be much easier to get than the Wave, but if we aren’t able to secure a South Coyote Buttes permits, your trip will visit White Pocket. All three are world class hiking and photography destinations in the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument.

4. I am staying in Page. Where can we meet? We offer pick-up service to any hotel, vacation rental or RV Park in Kanab, Utah, but we do not pick up in Page, Arizona. If you are staying in Page, we can arrange a meeting point halfway between Page and Kanab. Normally, this meeting point is at the intersection of Highway 89 and Houserock Valley Road, which is about 45 minutes west of Page, and is right on the way to the Wave.  If you book an 8 a.m. tour, that is the time the tour departs Kanab, Utah. We would leave at 8 a.m. and meet you at 8:45 a.m. at Houserock Valley Road. Keep in mind that Page is in Arizona, which does not observe daylight savings time. So, from spring through fall, the time in Arizona is one hour earlier than in Utah, where our company operates. So, if our tour left Kanab at 8 a.m. (Utah time) and met you at 8:45 a.m. (Utah time), this would be 7:45 a.m. Arizona time and you would need to leave Page by 7am.  Daylight savings time starts sometime in mid-March and usually runs to the middle of November.

5. Is there a bathroom at the Wave? There is a pit toilet at the trailhead to the Wave. Otherwise, there are no facilities in the wilderness area. While hiking to and from the Wave, you may duck behind a tree or bush for privacy whenever necessary. All solid waste should be packed out and our guides carry WAG bags for this purpose, as well as toilet paper, hand wipes and plastic bags. Do not leave any trash on the ground. This is a wilderness area and must be kept pristine. Paper must be bagged up and can be discreetly discarded into the trash bag at the truck.

6. Are drones allowed at North Coyote Buttes? No. North Coyote Buttes is a designated wilderness area and drones are illegal.

Guest Experiences on the Wave Tour

croderique – June 8, 2019 TripAdvisor We had a great guide, Rich. Not only did we see The Wave, but he showed several other areas we would not have even known to see. We strongly recommend using a guide service, and Dreamland is a good choice.

Seaside39985049827 – June 5, 2019 TripAdvisor We were a 4 people group (my friend and I and a couple). Steve was great at evaluating our speed and skills and adjusting accordingly. He took us through some “short cuts” were we were able to see dinosaur footprints, balanced well our time at the wave and other parts of the hike, was happy to add on wirepass into the hike, and did a good job of making sure we were all having fun and enjoying the adventure. He was fun, knowledgeable and very flexible. Great guide for a hike of a lifetime!

c0rintians – June 5, 2019 TripAdvisor We had an amazing time with Steve at the Wave. He was very knowledgeable and showed us areas of the Wave we didn’t even know about. We absolutely recommend Dreamland and Steve to anyone!

emilybeis – May 28, 2019 TripAdvisor Dreamland Safari Tours is simply excellent in all aspects. They entered the lottery for The Wave on our behalf, informed us promptly after we were lucky enough to win the lottery, and provided an unforgettable guided tour the next day. The Tour Leader, Steve, knows The Wave inside out. He was patient and courteous. He walked with us at our pace, allowing us ample time for enjoying the beauty of various scenic spots and taking photos. I would also like to mention that the sandwich provided for lunch was of very high quality. We enjoyed the tour so much.

Get the most of your Wave experience! If you are lucky enough to get your paws on a permit to hike the 6-8 miles of Coyote Buttes North and the Wave, consider The Wave Tour guided by Dreamland Safari Tours.

White Pocket Photo

Until a few decades ago only a handful of people knew about the Wave in North Coyote Buttes of the Paria Canyon Wilderness on the border of Utah and Arizona. Today there is a lottery to determine who gets in. Phenomenon is the word. Nothing else does it justice.

The undulating strata and spectrum of colors found in the sandstone walls of the Wave date back to the Great Pangean Desert of the Jurassic Period about 160-180 million years ago. Wind and water erosion carves, smooths, and reveals the layers of sand left here in great dunes and then compacted and mineralized (colors) into stone. While the Wave is a smooth, polished bowl of striped wind-swept sandstone, the same exotic rock is displayed in numerous forms, shapes, colors, and patterns throughout the guided hike to the Wave in North Coyote Buttes.

With the Wave Tour you get all of the following:

  • Comfortable, safe, year-round, high clearance, 4×4 transportation for up to 6 passengers on rough, unpredictable House Rock Valley Road
  • A homemade picnic lunch.
  • Knowledgeable tidbits about the geology, ecology, and history of the area. Guided Hiking through the easiest and most scenic routes to the neatest alternate and subtle Points of Interest including Dinosaur Tracks, Fatali’s boneyard (Lace Rocks), Sand Cove, Second Wave, Cheeseburger Rock, and other bizarre and colorful rock formations. These are areas the unguided rarely see. We do not typically go up to Top Rock or Top Arch due to time & difficulty of the ascent. We may make exceptions for very fit groups.
  • Guided photography and tips at dozens of locations.
  • Personal Safety – We help prepare you, keep you on track, and make sure you are safe in the Paria Canyon Wilderness. Our guides have basic Medical Training and satellite communications in case of emergency.

Elevation change, uneven footing, and sand across a long distance (typically 7-10 miles!) make the terrain on The Wave Tour difficult.  Please be prepared for hiking in difficult conditions. Daypacks are necessary especially in summer when our guide alone cannot carry enough water for everyone to safely complete the hike. Boots are highly recommended. Please carefully consider your age and physical abilities especially during the hottest months of the year: June, July, August. This tour is especially difficult in the heat.

SPECIAL PERMITS ARE REQUIRED FOR THE WAVE TOUR AT NORTH COYOTE BUTTES. DREAMLAND DOES NOT PROVIDE ADVANCE PERMITS OR HAVE AN UMBRELLA PERMIT.  ONLY OUR GUIDES ARE COVERED BY OUR PERMIT. WHEN OBTAINING PERMITS ONE DOES NOT HAVE TO ADD OUR GUIDES TO THE TOTAL NUMBER. UPON REQUEST, AND WITH AN ALTERNATE TOUR PLANNED, DREAMLAND MAY BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE LAST MINUTE LOTTERY IN YOUR STEAD. PERMITS ARE NEVER GUARANTEED.

Wave Permits are not easy to get, but odds can vary at different times of year. To find out about everything you need to know about Wave permits and lottery strategy check out the Permits page. There are alternative tours available in case no permit is obtained – the most popular alternatives are White Pocket and South Coyote Buttes .

Juice will close their ‘Nothing Like a Dream’ Tour in Amherst

Photo+courtesy+of+Juices+website.

Whether it was fate, or the telltale fedora vocalist Kamau Burton wore around campus, the six members of the band Juice all found each other during their freshman year at Boston College. Their name was born out of a rushed effort to enter a Battle of the Bands competition, and it ended up sticking with them years later as they moved from open mics to stages across the United States.

While in undergrad, all six members had a unique experience with music. Ben Stevens was introduced to music through his classical cello training, while Daniel Moss was a part of jazz band, listening to artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan.

“The eclectic collection of our different experiences with music sort of makes us who we are as a band,” Stevens said. “I think it definitely makes things weird and hard sometimes, but also cool, in a good way.”

After forming in Boston, Juice relocated to Brooklyn, New York. Stevens explained how Brooklyn is full of house shows and lots of DIY music, making it a great place to meet other bands. In fact, this is how the members of Juice befriended folk band Shallow Alcove , who’ve become close friends and musical partners. The two groups collaborated on an acoustic cover of Juice’s song “Becoming a Stranger,” which is set to be recorded and released within the new few months.

“Becoming a Stranger” was part of Juice’s most recent EP “Nothing Like a Dream.” It was that song that “kicked the ball down the hill and [got the album] rolling,” Stevens said. “There was a long period where we were just throwing some darts at the wall … there wasn’t unanimous excitement about anything specifically until that song.”

Another aspect which helped Juice create new music is their tour. Much of their music is developed collaboratively, and being on the road means they have plenty of time to brainstorm. Moss explained, “Once you’ve recorded the song, you’re then trying to make it sound perfect and just obsessing over tiny details.”

Stevens and Moss struggled to find the right words to describe their genre. In terms of their inspirations, the band listens to everything from Japanese pop to Big Thief while they travel on tour. While this music does shape Juice’s sound, Stevens suggested the influence isn’t all that apparent, giving the band an even more distinctive style.

“We always say we’re alternative, mostly because it feels like the word that you say if you don’t know what to say,” Moss confessed. “It’s rock and multi-dimensional, and it’s got a lot of different stuff. Some funk, some RnB, some soft rock and it’s ever changing. This is always the question that’s hardest for us.”

Overall, the band strives to keep their sound unrestrained by a specific genre or label. When forced to come up with just a single word or phrase, “it leaves a lot to be desired for us as artists,” Stevens said.

Juice has now reached the final shows of their “Nothing Like a Dream” tour and are performing mostly in college towns. When I spoke with the duo, they had just arrived in Ithaca, noting that “they have a deep appreciation for live music here,” since many of Juice’s listeners are university students.

This final stretch includes Amherst, Mass., as Juice will perform at The Drake Saturday, April 27. Opening for Juice is Hush Club , who will be holding a free pizza social at Antonio’s following the concert.

Janie Victoria Ward and Tracy Robinson-Wood speak at the final Sister: Resisters workshop hosted by Black Women United.

5 Things We’d Like to See on Shakira’s ‘Las Mujeres Ya No lloran’ Tour: The Dream Setlist & More

Shakira announced she's hitting the road in 2024. Here's what we hope to see in concert.

Shakira

Shakira did not lie when she announced on social media: “se viene la loba” (the she wolf is coming). The Colombian superstar unveiled the dates to the North American leg of her 2024 Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran tour on Tuesday (April 16), just on the heels of revealing the big news during her surprise stop at Coachella over the weekend.

The tour, in support of her new album of the same name, will kick off Nov. 2 in Palm Desert, California, and wrap on Dec. 15 in Detroit, Michigan. During the 14-arena trek, she will also visit Los Angeles, Miami, and New York City, to name a few. (Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. local time on April 22, here ).

Shakira first shared the news on Friday (April 12) at Coachella, where she was a surprise guest during Bizarrap’s debut performance. Right after performing “La Fuerte” and before singing “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” (her two collaborative efforts with the Argentine hitmaker), she said:  “I have to share something today. Biza, I’m going on tour. I’m going on tour, finally…starting here, this November, this year, this city. I can’t wait. Couldn’t ask for more.”

The tour — which marks her first since her 2018 El Dorado World Tour — is in support of her 12th studio album, which debuted at No. 1 on the Top Latin Albums and Latin Pop Albums charts (dated April 6), as well as No. 13 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart.

As we patiently wait for the fall to come around, Billboard has curated five things we would like to see on Shakira’s new tour.

The Grand Opening

Shakira

If “La Loba se viene” is any indication, it only makes sense that Shakira starts off her concerts performing a bilingual version of “Loba” (“She Wolf”). Her 2009 banger, which entered many Billboard charts, including the Hot 100, Hot Latin Songs and Tropical Songs, is the ultimate dance track perfect to set the mood for the rest of the night. “She Wolf” also represents what Shakira embodies: a woman with strong family values, resilience and strength. Now, if she can arrive singing the song on top of a large wolf on the stage — that’d be extra epic!

The 1990s Medley

Shakira

It’s no surprise that Shakira will perform all of her latest hits live for the first time. We’re expecting to sing and dance to songs such as “Te Felicito,” “Monotonía,” “Copa Vacía,” and “Puntería” — all from her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran album. But we’re also hoping for a ride down memory lane.

We’re specifically crossing fingers for a throwback medley set — where she will perform some of her melancholy rock tunes from the ‘90s. Our dream version of it would include “Ciega, Sordomuda,” “Ojos Así,” “Estoy Aquí,” “Inevitable,” and “Antologia,” to name a few.

Surprise Guests

Shakira and Cardi B

Now, we know Shakira can dominate the stage and sell out arenas on her own, but it would also be nice to see her bring out some surprise guests. Some we would especially like to see her join the stage are Alejandro Sanz, for an epic performance of “La Tortura” and “Te Lo Agradezco Pero No,” Karol G for the ultra-powerful “TQG,” Cardi B for their flirtatious and feel-good “Puntería” — and why not? Beyoncé (“Beautiful Liar”) and/or Rihanna (“Can’t Remember to Forget You”) as well.

Her Talented Offspring

Shakira

Another sweet moment on the tour would be if Shakira invites her talented sons onstage. The two boys first showed off their singing skills on the heartfelt tune “Acróstico” (third single off Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran ), where they collaborated with their mom. Her older son, Milan, has also been spotted on social media performing with his school band, where he plays the drums.

The Grand Finale

Bizarrap, Shakira

And, because Shakira made her tour announcement during Bizarrap’s Coachella set, it only makes sense that she invites him on stage (if possible for the entire tour) to close off the show with their 2023 banger “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.” The track peaked at No. 9 on the Hot 100 and landed at No. 2 on both the Billboard Global 200 and the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts. It also ruled the Hot Latin Songs chart, scoring Shakira her 12th leader on the tally.

Luxury Homes for Less: The Top 11 Cities Where Sellers Are Slashing Prices on Their Posh Properties

Sellers of high-end homes are increasingly resorting to price cuts to lure buyers to their lavish properties , which most folks can only dream of owning.

About 10.7% of homes on the market priced between $2 million and $5 million underwent price reductions in March, according to a Realtor.com® analysis. But high-end home sellers are slashing prices at much greater numbers in certain parts of the country. We identified the luxury real estate markets that had the highest percentage of price cuts.

“The top luxury markets seeing price reductions are primarily in the South,” says  Hannah Jones , senior economic research analyst at Realtor.com. “Before the run-up in prices during the [COVID-19] pandemic, you could get a lot more for your money in these markets. Buyers are looking for that again. And buyers at this price point have a lot more options, so they can afford to be pickier.”

Six of the top 11 markets were in Florida. Price reductions in the state were up 74.7% year over year in March, according to Realtor.com data.

Five of these Florida markets were on the storm-prone Gulf of Mexico .

“A lot of these properties in Florida are at a high risk from climate-related events, such as hurricanes,” says Jones.

Those climate risks are resulting in higher insurance costs, which might make it harder for homeowners to sell properties in the state. Insurance premiums in the state were up 43.2% from 2018 through 2023, according to a S&P Global Market Intelligence analysis .

“The insurance is what’s killing us right now,” says Lakeland, FL , real estate agent Michelle Schaal , of Keller Williams Smart 1 Realty. “There’s a lot of insurance companies that are pulling out of Florida right now. [And] insurance on that large of a property is going to be costly.”

The Central Florida metropolitan area of Lakeland had the highest percentage of price reductions on homes priced between $2 million and $5 million in March. Schaal’s own insurance policy in the Lakeland suburb of Bartow has more than doubled in just two years.

Plus, there aren’t as many buyers who can afford homes priced over $2 million. So these properties tend to sit on the market for longer. Sellers might resort to price cuts to make their residences more appealing and speed up sales.

“There are sellers who are realistic,” says Schaal. “And then there are those who overprice their homes. … These homes may sit for a while, and they may have to lower that price point.”

To figure out which housing markets had the highest percentage of luxury home price reductions, we looked at Realtor.com data for homes priced between $2 million and $5 million in March.

So where can buyers get a deal on luxury homes?

Gary Wilson stands holding his cue in front of a snooker table with green backlighting at his North Shields club.

‘I thought I’d be a taxi driver for a long time’: Gary Wilson’s dream ride to Crucible

The ‘Tyneside Terror’ on his journey from child snooker prodigy to losing his tour card, before returning to the top at the Crucible

G ary Wilson was no longer folding crispy pancakes at the frozen food factory but he was a taxi driver when his long struggle to establish himself as one of the world’s best snooker players seemed an impossible dream. “That was the point where I started thinking: ‘It might never actually happen’,” Wilson says 13 years later. “I knew deep down it should and that, given the right circumstances, I would be good enough. But life doesn’t always work out as you want, does it? I was 25 and I thought I might be a taxi driver for a long time.”

There were times when Wilson was reduced to tears and, as he says, “generally, I’m not very emotional but that’s one area in my life where I’m very passionate. It’s my career and it’s been my dream for such a long time.”

We’re sitting in the deserted North Shields Snooker Centre, on the edge of Newcastle, and Wilson has spent an hour telling me his extraordinary back story as he prepares for the world championships which begin in Sheffield on Saturday. Wilson, 38, is the world No 10 and, having won two tournaments this season, he hopes to match or even better his finest performance at the Crucible. In the 2019 world championships he lost to Judd Trump, the eventual winner, in the semi-finals, and Wilson is a far better player now than he was then.

A child prodigy on the snooker table, Wilson was making century breaks at the age of nine and being interviewed by David Vine on television. But the transition to professionalism, at 18, was brutal. Wilson lost his tour card after his second year, in 2006, at a time when there were only six ranking tournaments.

For the next seven years he worked in a frozen food factory and as a taxi driver while dreaming of finding a way back into pro snooker. Wilson returned to an expanded tour in 2013 and now the “Tyneside Terror” is flourishing as one of the world’s best and most engaging players.

He started playing snooker on a miniature table at the age of four and when he was nine he was banned from some senior club matches because men from rival teams were not willing to lose to him. Wilson was already dreaming of becoming world champion. “Absolutely. My first memory of watching proper snooker was the world championship final with Jimmy White and Stephen Hendry in 1994 , which went to the wire. I was supporting Jimmy, but I respected Stephen more as a hero, because he’d done it all and dominated. I dreamt of what it would be like to win and be Stephen Hendry .”

Gary Wilson, wearing a black waistcoat adorned with an oriental pattern, leans on the edge of the snooker table as he plays a shot at Manchester Central

Last month Hendry had Wilson on as a guest on his podcast and they shared fascinating insights into the yips which have stalked them at different times. It was a sign of how far Wilson has come since the crushing disappointment of losing his tour place.

“It was the second day of the 2006 world championship qualifying, and I had to win that match to stay on tour. It was 8-8 but I lost 10-8 to James Tatton who fluked the frame ball in both the last two frames.

“I was devastated as you couldn’t get straight back on the tour like now. I was 20 and the dream was over, definitely for the short term. I was still living with Mam and Dad and I needed a job. I wanted to play snooker but it was time for some real life.”

His mother worked at the Findus frozen foods factory in Longbenton, just outside Newcastle, and Wilson followed her. “I did the 6am to 2pm shift and so I was up at 5.20am every morning. I’m terrible getting up but my mam would be up at 5am. She’d get me up as she was leaving and I’d be on the road by twenty to six. The good thing was that I’d finish at 2 o’clock and, albeit a little tired, practise snooker in the afternoon.”

What did he do in the factory? “All sorts but, mainly, it was folding crispy pancakes. There were wraps as well. The machines would put the fillings in and I would be folding them and passing them on. It was monotonous work and, deep down, I was thinking: ‘This isn’t what I want to do.’ I’m grown-up enough to know that I need to earn a living but, at the same time, it was devastating. Other players I grew up with were doing OK on tour and I’m in the Findus factory, wrapping frozen food for two years.”

Wilson laughs when I say I bet he’s never eaten a crispy pancake since then. “No. I never ate them when I was there either but we had some laughs and I liked the staff nights out.”

At 23, Wilson changed jobs. “In June 2009 I began working as a taxi driver for a company called Blue Line. I did night work at the start but then I thought: ‘If I’m going to play snooker as well, I’d rather go out at six in the morning and finish at three in the afternoon so I can still practise.’ I could make £100 to £120 a day and I was doing five or six days a week while playing snooker in my spare time. I found a proper structure.”

Wilson liked being a freelance driver but there were the occasional passengers who dodged paying him or were sick in the back of his cab. “There was a bunch of Scottish lads at the barracks and they were coming into the city centre for a drink and they were absolutely hammered getting in the car. I turned to the one in the back on the left nearside and saw this purple stuff come out of his mouth. It was all over the seat and the inside of my door.

“I was like: ‘Right, I’m not being funny. We’re stopping at the cashpoint.’ It was the cashpoint next to St James’s Park, and I say: ‘You’re getting £100 out.’ It was 10 o’clock at night and I was planning on another four hours of work. So there was loss of earnings and, obviously, the cleaning of the car. I escorted him to the cash machine and thankfully, he put his card in and I took my £100.

“I went straight home and my mam got the cleaning stuff out and I tried to get the worst of it off. First thing in the morning I was straight down to get it valeted. I still lost the whole of that day because, even though it had been valeted, the smell lingered. So a hundred quid was not a lot. But I’ve got some fond memories of my taxi days and I did it for five years.”

Gary Wilson looks across his North Shields club while sitting and holding his cue

Barry Hearn’s return to snooker promotion had transformed the tour and, by then, there were 25 tournaments. Wilson was around £10,000 in debt, having to travel and stay at qualifying tournaments, but the increased opportunities meant he had soon paid off the money he owed. “For the first three quarters of my first season back, I was still taxi driving. But I was getting closer and closer to the top 64 [in the world]. At the end of February 2014 I said to Blue Line: ‘I feel I’m doing well enough to go full time with the snooker. But if things don’t go according to plan would my job still be here?’ They said it would but, thankfully, I’ve not had to go back.”

There were still difficult days and Wilson remembers two specific occasions where he threw his cue in the dustbin and swore that he would never play again. “I was trying to qualify for the worlds at Ponds Forge and after I lost I came straight out and the cue got launched in the bin. I wasn’t putting on a show. I left it and walked up the road. But my dad was following and he picked it out of the bin. It happened another time, around 2016.”

Three years later Wilson made the semi-finals of the worlds after beating Luca Brecel, Mark Selby and Ali Carter before losing to Trump 17-11. “I didn’t play as well as I did earlier in the tournament. The table was heavier, drifting off more, and it got to me. With the fragilities of my cue action at the time, it was great when the tables were playing lovely. But when they weren’t as nice, it affected my game. I’m not blaming the conditions, it was more my fault.”

Last year Wilson lost in the second round to Selby who reached the final. But Brecel became the surprising world champion . The Belgian, who had never won a match at five previous world championships, was a rank outsider and he claimed not to have practised and, instead, said he drank heavily most nights during the tournament.

“I can’t believe it was to the extent he portrayed it,” Wilson says of Brecel. “Maybe he had a couple of drinks out every night. If you start having four, five drinks that’s going to affect you. But I do believe he was hardly practising and that he was going out and enjoying himself. I get that to an extent.”

Brecel has had limited success since becoming world champion and Wilson says: “Naturally he’s enjoyed his lifestyle. But maybe he’ll now think: ‘Let’s knuckle down again.’”

Did Brecel’s victory give Wilson and others on the fringe of the elite the belief that they, too, can become world champions? “He showed it can be done. But you don’t necessarily have to play your best game. You just have to play a good, solid game for a couple of weeks. Anyone near the top 16 knows it can be won.”

It took Wilson 18 years to win his first tournament – the 2022 Scottish Open. But this season he has won both the Scottish Open and the Welsh Open and, as he says with a smile on the eve of the world championships, “I’ve been told I might be a dark horse. I know if I play well I’ve got a chance of beating anyone. But it’s about playing well more times than not and that’s what I’m striving to do in every tournament. I want a bit more consistency.”

That pragmatic approach, forged in a frozen food factory and a taxi, has helped Wilson overcome doubts about his unusual cueing technique. The down-to-earth Tyneside Terror also remains, winningly, rooted in real life. “If I put my cue away now, I’ve got some money in the bank but it’s not going to last long. So you’ve got to remember that you’re doing something for a living that you’ve always loved and it’s a privilege to do so. I’ve always remembered where I’ve come from and what I’ve had and not had. I’m still pushing to have more, because you never know when it’s going to run dry.

“It’s a great season if you win a tournament and you stay in the top 16. I’ve won two this season and if I was to carry on like that every year then that’s a great, great career. You can’t guarantee it but, yeah, that’s the dream.”
