Queen: It’s a Kinda Magic Show (Review)
Impersonating the late charismatic Freddie Mercury is probably an impossible task. Those are very big shoes to fill and, in all honesty, Giles Taylor, the multi-talented Englishman, came quite close. He portrays the role of Freddie Mercury in the Freddie Mercury and Queen tribute show, Queen: It’s a Kinda Magic , which took place at Emperor’s Palace on Friday night, 30 th November 2018 and will be playing there until Monday, 31 st December 2018. For more details on the shows, click here .
Let me also remind you that if you’re going to a tribute show, you must mentally psyche yourself up and not only accept the reality but also understand the concept of a tribute show, or you will be setting yourself up for disappointment. Tribute….tribute….duh….it’s not the real thing…you go there to appreciate and to remember the original artists, to make their spirit live on and to enjoy their music even after years of them having passed on. However, I must also admit, that when Showtime Australia brought us the Whitney Houston Show , I was blown away and have never witnessed a tribute show like this where Belinda Davids sounded so much like Whitney Houston, read more here .
Taking that into consideration, one can truly appreciate the attention to detail of the Queen: It’s a Kinda Magic show as much effort was made to re-enact Queen’s historically famous 1986 World Tour concert. From the costumes that fit like a glove, to the iconic “bottomless” microphone that Freddie Mercury used which was his trademark…to the direction in which the piano was placed, with the cups on it, except, it wasn’t Pepsi cups…perhaps the only visual replication missing was the teeth. As a side note, Giles Taylor started playing the piano from the age of five years old.
Giles Taylor has a wicked sense of humour, one that you will either love or hate, I quite enjoyed it. He certainly had the audience captivated, he owned the stage, even when he went off stage and into the audience. If a lapdance tickles your fancy, you may just be in luck…and I’ll just leave that there… I wish I had checked the duration of the show but I didn’t, however, it seemed longer than most tribute shows I have attended.
Personally, I felt the first half of the show was a bit slow. I mean, this is “Freddie Mercury!!” – yes, yes, I know it’s a tribute show and an emulation of note, so based on that itself, you’re supposed to come out with a bang! I do feel a little something is missing to make the first half more enjoyable.
Fortunately, if you returned after intermission, you would have seen and felt that it was better than the first half. By now more people had consumed more alcohol as well, so naturally, like most shows after intermission, many people feel a little more “free” if you know what I mean. I somehow felt this audience was a little “flat” even though there were many die-hard Queen fans that got lost in the music, looking as if they were in a rock concert, which is just the way it should be if you’re a true Queen fan.
Here are two recordings from the show which I uploaded to my YouTube channel, please excuse the quality – recorded it handsfree as I tried not to dance too much whilst recording…have a listen and let me know what you think of the performance in these songs…
If you have it in yourself to appreciate a tribute show, then go and experience the Queen: It’s a Kinda Magic show at Emperor’s Palace. If you’re not open-minded and going to compare them to the original artist in a deliberate unsung manner, then I suggest that you stay at home, sit on your couch and listen to the CD or watch the music videos. Tribute shows are not for you.
Have you been to this show, what did you think of it? I would LOVE to know, so do share in the comments.
Here are more photos I took from Friday night’s performance:

Queen: It’s A Kinda Magic
The Opera House, 18th Apr 2021
Reviewed by: Graeme King
“Are we gonna have fun tonight Wellington?” shouts Freddie Mercury (Dominic Warren) during the concert starter A Kind Of Magic, and it’s obvious the audience is in for an interactive experience.
“This is a rock ‘n’ roll gig so we’re gonna treat it as a stadium – on your feet!” This at the start of the second track Radio Ga Ga , and we are up dancing!
This concert is a recreation of the 1986 World Tour – and a lot of attention has been paid to ensure the authenticity of the costumes, instruments and equipment, background videos, stunning lightshow, and state-of-the-art sound system.
All their biggest hits follow: Another One Bites the Dust, featuring the solid bass guitar of John Deacon (Nigel Walker), Play The Game and Killer Queen , with Brian May (Luke Wyngaard) exquisitely playing the famous guitar riffs, Fat Bottomed Girls and Tie Your Mother Down featuring a thunderous but impeccable drum solo by Roger Taylor (Michael Dickens). Bicycle Race, Save Me, Don’t Stop Me Now – after which Freddie asks for a selfie with the band, and for the audience to stand and raise their hands, with Crazy Little Thing Called Love closing the first half.
A frenetic I Want It All starts the second set , with It’s A Hard Life segueing effortlessly into You’re My Best Friend. A superb guitar solo by Brian May is followed by I Want To Break Free , whereupon Freddie (in drag) comes down into the first few rows to sit on a few male laps – rubbing some with his feather boa!
The hits keep coming – Hammer To Fall, Under Pressure, Somebody To Love, We Are The Champions – with the last song of the set the anthemic We Will Rock You.
The encore starts with Love Of My Life featuring Brian May’s sublime acoustic guitar playing and gorgeous vocals by Freddie, finishing with a climactic Bohemian Rhapsody.
Overall a clever, well-spaced production that, with the strong vocal harmonies and musicianship of the band together with Freddie’s powerful vocals and stage presence, creates an enjoyable Queen experience.

Queen: It's A Kinda Magic Regent on Broadway Wednesday, April 14 Reviewed by Damian Thorne
Who actually are Queen in 2021? After years without a frontman, the band finally came out of the wilderness back in 2012 with Adam Lambert taking lead vocals. I'm greeted in the Regent foyer by my friend Cherie's young son, wearing his Queen with Adam Lambert concert T-shirt. Oliver is as excited as I've seen him and it strikes me that he is about to see a version of the classic band, before the line-up change.
Having braved MIQ, with The Wiggles and the cast of The Lion King, we have in front of us a new incarnation of the It's A Kinda Magic show. This is their third lap around New Zealand and it's all change with South African Dominic Warren in charge, and there are times during tonight's show I could have closed my eyes and imagined Mercury himself on stage.
There were also times when my eyes were open, and I saw four men mimicking Queen to the best of their ability. The difference between a tribute act and an act that mimics the original is that these guys are in character and are introduced as Freddie, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. Complete with cheesy wigs and replica costumes they are playing roles, not just paying tribute. There are some lows - Warren's microphone mix gets lost among the noise and at times we have to rely on knowing the lyrics as there's no way we can make them out.
Warren's call in the second number for us to treat the Regent like a stadium has everybody standing. It's a bit of an own goal as it alienates some of the older demographic I'm surrounded by who may not be able to stand for long periods.
There's plenty to love, with the highlight being the quietest moment when Rusty Red's Brian May accompanies Warren on Love of My Life, and Red can play for sure – he's no May, even with the wig, but he doesn't need to be – he's a fine musician.
I must mention the kid who could only have been 10 knocking out all the lyrics to Fat Bottomed Girls, an unexpected treat for those who happened to look away from the stage and catch him thrilling at the number.
Do you judge a book by its cover in a situation like this? The book had Queen on it and we have Queen here in front of us. It's retro Queen. Lambertless Queen. Freddie Mercury Queen, and the audience bloody loves them. As we head predictably towards the Bohemian Rhapsody encore, I'd stopped overthinking and let myself go gaga.

Dominic Warren
Born on the Eastern Cape of South Africa in 1992, Dominic Warren has spent his young life gathering musical experiences most young South Africans only dream of, commencing his vocal training as Head Chorister at Drakensberg Boys Choir, before continuing his training at Kearsney College and joining the prestigious South African Youth Choir.
This culminated in Warren’s acute sense of musicality and a voice so warm, clear and mesmerizing that it was once described as “annoyingly good” .
Career highlights include sharing stages with Luciano Pavarotti, Joshua Bell and the Soweto String Quartet, performing for Bishop Desmond TuTu, Bono and Saul Kerzner and touring to every corner of the globe from China, Japan and Taiwan to Germany, USA, Australia and New Zealand.
As of 2018, Warren now puts his extraordinary voice to epic use, singing some of the hardest vocal parts ever written, in his starring role as Freddie Mercury in Showtime Australia’s long-running hit stage show Queen: It’s a Kinda Magic.
