Taylor Swift's Eras Tour: All the U.S. and international dates and opening acts

eras tour map usa

Taylor Swift opened the Eras Tour at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona — which rebranded itself as "Swift Cit y" for the March 17 and 18 concerts — with a triumphant return to live performance as the first act in the history of that venue to sell out two nights on the same tour.

By that point, she'd already broken the all-time record for most concert tickets sold by an artist in a single day and passed Madonna's Sticky & Sweet Tour as the highest-grossing tour in history by a female artist.

And Swift rose to the occasion , leading her band through a marathon 44-song set that lasted more than three hours while delivering on her promise of "a journey through all of my musical eras."

So what does she do for an encore? Here's where the Eras Tour is headed next, adding two surprise songs to the set at each show. Here's a look at what she's played so far .

Taylor Swift is, at long last, headed back on the road. Following this week’s monumental chart debut of Midnights , her tenth studio album, Swift announced the U.S. leg of her 2023 Eras tour on Tuesday morning (Nov. 1), confirming her first official tour in nearly five years following months of rumors.

“I wanted to tell you something that I’ve been so excited about for a really long time. I’ve been planning for ages and I finally get to tell you: I’m going back on tour,” Swift said on GMA . “The tour is called the Eras tour and it’s a journey through all of the musical eras of my career.”

Taylor Swift Is ‘IN SHAMBLES’ Over ‘Midnights’ Dominating the Hot 100 Top 10

Swift said that after kicking off in the U.S., the tour will go on an international swing, with those dates to be announced soon.

Support on the tour will come via a rotating cast of opening acts including Paramore, beabadoobee, Phoebe Bridgers, girl in red, Muna, Haim, Gayle, Gracie Abrams and Owenn. The public on-sale date for the tour will be 10 a.m. local venue time on Nov. 18. Swift has partnered with Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan program, with fans able to register here for the TaylorSwiftTix presale now through Nov. 9 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Registered fans will get a code with exclusive access to purchase tickets on Nov. 15 starting at 10 a.m. local venue time.

Previous Lover Fest Verified Fan purchasers will get preferred access to participate in the TaylorSwiftTix presale; make sure to register with the same Ticketmaster Account as your Lover Fest purchase. Capital One cardholders will have priority access to purchase tickets on Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. local venue time through Nov. 17 at 10 p.m. local venue time or until supplies last.

Swift’s planned follow-up to the Reputation tour, Lover Fest, was scheduled to take place in 2020 following the 2019 release of her Lover album, but was canceled due to the pandemic. Since the Reputation tour, Swift has released four original studio albums — Lover , 2020’s Folklore and Evermore , and Midnights — as well as two re-recorded albums, Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version) , both in 2021.

This week, Midnights blasted in atop the Billboard 200 albums chart with 1.578 million equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Oct. 27, according to Luminate — the biggest week for any album in nearly seven years. Meanwhile, Swift made history on the Hot 100 by becoming the first artist to claim the chart’s entire top 10 in a single frame, with “Anti-Hero” debuting at No. 1 to become her ninth career chart-topper.

The U.S. will not have seen the last of the Eras Tour next week after all. Taylor Swift will bring her stadium outing back to the United States and Canada in October and November… not of this year, but in 2024.

Swift announced 15 more shows in four North American cities on Thursday morning, including a long-awaited answer to the musical question: What about Canada? The Eras Tour will have what for now are its concluding dates in November 2024 with six shows in Toronto, Ontario at the Rogers Centre.

Popular on Variety

(Read Variety ‘s concert review of Swift’s first night at L.A.’s SoFi Stadium here .)

“Turns out it’s NOT the end of an era,” Swift wrote on social media. “Miami, New Orleans, Indy and Toronto: The Eras Tour is coming to you in 2024 with  @gracieabrams ! Verified fan registration for all shows is open now – visit TaylorSwift.com for more information.”

At Swift’s website, fans are being informed that Verified Fan registration for the U.S. shows next year is open through Aug. 5 at 5 p.m. ET. The actual on-sale date for tickets has not yet been revealed but will be sent to Verified Fan registrants. Following what will likely be an instantaneous sellout, resale tickets for the added shows will also become available on sites such as Vividseats , Stubhub and Seatgeek .

Notably, Swift did not say these were the final dates, leaving the door open for possibly still more additions to the tour, after it makes its unexpected trip back to North American home territory following an existing 2024 itinerary that takes the Eras Tour throughout Europe.

From there, Swift will fill out the rest of this year with shows in Latin America, albeit at a less constant pace than the concerts that have had her on the go in the States since the Eras Tour opened in Arizona on March 17. She performs along with guest Sabrina Carpenter in Mexico City Aug. 24-27, Buenos Aires Nov. 9-11, Rio de Janeiro Nov. 17-19 and Sao Paulo Nov. 24-26.

The tour picks up in 2024 with four shows in Tokyo Feb. 7-10 before moving on to Sydney, Australia later in February and Singapore in March. A European leg of the tour begins in earnest with four nights in Paris May 9-12, wrapping up Aug. 17 with the last of six shows scheduled for London’s Wembley Stadium. Swift then has a two-month gap in her schedule before resuming in Toronto Nov. 14.

Important information for buying tickets during the TaylorSwiftTix Presale powered by Verified Fan:

Our goal is to maximize the number of fans who have an opportunity to shop.

The link in your text will direct you to the show you were selected for — either a show that was available during registration or a show that was announced after registration closed.

If you were selected for a show available during registration, your code will enable you to shop  that  show  or any show in the same city  that was announced after registration closed. (You will not be able to shop a different show that was available during registration).

If you were selected for a show announced after registration closed — i.e., the link in your text directs you to one of those shows — your code is good for that show. If you choose, you can use your code instead for the show you prioritized first during registration; however, we expect demand for that show to be higher and your wait to be longer.

Remember, each code only allows you to purchase 6 tickets.

Why do I see tickets available to purchase on another site before the TaylorSwiftTix Presale powered by Verified Fan has even happened?

Taylor Swift tour has many 'eras.' We tracked her movements to give you the look and feel.

"It's been a long time coming ..."

Taylor Swift is performing her first stadium tour in five years, and she put in all the stops so fans can enjoy every second of the three-hour-plus-long concert.

With more than 2 million tickets sold on the first day they were available – the most sold by an artist in a single day – The Eras Tour is a historically monumental event that's breaking stadium records at nearly every stop.

Fifty-two shows are planned across 20 U.S. cities from March through August, and each show  boasts a 44-song set list spread out over 10 distinctly different sets, representing the albums – or eras – from the past 17 years of her career.

To see where Swift is on stage for each song through the show, Twitter user Vinoj @MRPERFECTLYFlNE  mapped her movements during each song on stage, and we confirmed them at the show in Tampa April 14. Here's a look:

The 'Lover' era begins as Swift emerges from beneath the stage

The show kicks off with dancers carrying large pastel-colored tapestries across the stage, then setting them down so Swift can emerge from underneath the stage in a bejeweled bodysuit .

She then performs six songs from her 2019 studio album "Lover." She had planned a tour to promote the album with dates in 2020, but it was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic .

Each era comes with its own stage props, costume changes and visual effects . The stage itself is a screen that changes throughout the concert, and it features multiple moving platforms.

The bedazzled 'Fearless' era follows

Swift then changes into a golden dress with a bedazzled guitar to perform three songs from her 2008 studio album "Fearless." She also plays alongside a band, including guitarist Paul Sidoti and bassist Amos Heller , who have both been touring with her since 2007.

Fearless was the first of her albums to receive a Grammy for album of the year in 2010. The Fearless Tour was her first headlining tour , spanning 118 shows from April 2009 through July 2010.

Earthy vibes for the 'Evermore' era

The stage then changes to feature trees and a moss-covered piano as Swift wears a yellow dress and plays five songs from her 2020 studio album "Evermore."

It was her second "pandemic album," released less than five months after the first, and features folk music in contrast to her country and pop albums.

Snakes and slithering: The 'Reputation' era excites

As Swift transitions into the "Reputation" era, a snake slithers around the screens and across the stadium through the crowd's lighted bracelets. She then enters in a black, one-legged catsuit featuring a red snake as she sings four songs from the 2016 studio album.

The Reputation Stadium Tour, which also kicked off in Glendale, Arizona, included 53 shows over seven months in 2018 and was the highest-grossing music tour by a female artist that year.

Glamour and periwinkle: The 'Speak Now' era

The stadium then features purple visual effects on all its screens as Swift walks toward center stage in a ballgown to sing one song from her 2010 studio album.

"Speak Now," aside from its deluxe edition, is entirely self-written by Swift and is rumored to be the next rerecorded album she will release. She also did a concert tour to promote "Speak Now" that included 110 shows from February 2011 through March 2012.

Who's Taylor Swift anyway? The 'Red' era

The stadium then turns red as a dancer appears with a box that plays snippets of songs from Swift's 2012 studio album. She then emerges wearing a shirt that features lyrics or phrases from songs in the album.

She plays four songs from "Red," including the 10-minute version of "All Too Well" released in 2021. The song is so notable that Stanford University has an entire course devoted to examining its lyrics .

"Red" also had its own world tour, including 86 shows from March 2013 through June 2014.

The visually impressive 'Folklore' era

Like the "Evermore" era, the "Folklore" era transformed the stage into a forest. Swift starts the set by singing while lying on the mossy roof of a cabin and wearing a flowing gown, then performs seven songs from her 2020 studio album.

"Folklore" was the first of Swift's two "pandemic albums" and won a  Grammy for album of the year , making her the first woman in history to win the award three times.

Neon lights hark back to the '1989' era

The forest fades away and a neon skyline emerges on the screens to signal the 1989 era. Swift wears a matching beaded top and skirt to perform five songs from her 2014 studio album.

"1989" received her second Grammy for album of the year, and its stadium tour ran for 85 shows from May to December 2015. The 1989 World Tour was the world's highest-grossing music tour in 2015 .

The acoustic set, unique song choices

Swift then puts on a matching dress over the "1989"-era outfit to perform two "surprise songs" that are unique to each show on the tour. She plays one song on guitar and the other on a piano painted with flowers.

MORE: Tracking The Eras Tour set list and surprise songs

There are no visual effects during this set, but she has brought guests out to play with her, including Marcus Mumford and Aaron Dessner.

Swift ends with the 'Midnights' era, her latest album

After finishing the acoustic set, Swift dives under stage and emerges in a faux fur coat and sparkly T-shirt dress to perform seven songs from her most recent studio album, "Midnights."

She announced the release of "Midnights " at the MTV Video Music Awards in August 2022, then released it two months later in October.

Taylor Swift announces 2023 ‘Eras Tour’ of U.S. stadiums; international dates to come

NSAI 2022 Nashville Songwriter Awards

Taylor Swift  announced Tuesday morning her long-rumored return to the road, with an outing dubbed the “Eras Tour” scheduled to hit U.S. stadiums beginning in March 2023 and running into August, with international dates set to be revealed later.

The supporting acts are very much all about the sisterhood, with a host of acts Swift has championed in the past. Opening acts for the U.S. leg of the tour are Paramore, Haim, Phoebe Bridgers, Beabadoobee, Girl in Red, Muna, Gayle, Gracie Abrams and Owenn.

The tour starts March 18, 2023 in what is apparently a sweet spot for Swift, Glendale, AZ, the same place her last outing, the pre-pandemic “Reputation” tour, began in 2018.

The U.S. leg wraps up four and a half months later with two nights at L.A.’s SoFi Stadium Aug. 4-5 — the venue she was set to open as a concert venue in 2020 with the canceled “Lover Fest” mini-tour.

As for which album we can consider the tour to be supporting, since she has released four original studios albums since her last tour? All of them. Swift described the tour as “a journey through the musical eras of my career (past and present!),” with a graphic showing her look from different phases of her career.

The public on-sale happens at 10 a.m. local time on Nov. 18. As with all major tours nowadays, there will be an earlier rollout of tickets for credit card members, in this case holders of Capital One cards, beginning Nov. 15 at 10 a.m. local time.

As with her previous tour, there will be a Ticketmaster Verified Fan program “to ensure tickets get into the hands of fans.” Aspiring ticket buyers can register for the setup now through Nov. 9  here .

Unusually in the modern era of variably priced “platinum tickets” where fans get little information about set ticket prices, Swift has announced the cost of her tickets in advance. They run from $49 up to $449, with VIP packages that start at $199 and go up to $899.

Swift’s announcement promised that international dates are to follow.

Of all her “Eras,” Swift is really due to represent the modern one on tour, as much as fans may relish the idea of a somewhat nostalgically themed outing encompassing the full spectrum of her career. She has released “Lover,” “Folklore,” “Evermore” and now “ Midnights ” since she last was on the road, along with bonus-track-aided re-recordings of the “Red” and “Fearless” albums, any one of which would have been occasion enough to prompt its own tour in an era before the entire concert scene necessarily hit a pause.

There was an attention to detail in the tour announcement even in the graphics signifying the opening acts at different spots in the tour routing, with Bridgers, for instance, being represented by a tiny ghost, in honor of the skeleton costume she’s used on her own headlining tours.

Not accidental, probably, is how that same graphic breaks the tour itinerary down into two columns of 13 dates each. There will be 26 shows in 20 cities. The venues getting a two-night stand are in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Chicago, Arlington, TX, Foxborough, MA and East Rutherford, NJ.

The reception for “Midnights” upon its October release left no doubt just how strong the appetite for Swift tickets will be. It had the biggest week since Adele’s “25” album, per Luminate this week, with 1,578,000 album-equivalent units.

Additionally, it was announced Monday that for the first time in history, all 10 top slots of the Billboard Hot 100 were filled by a single artist’s songs, with “Anti-Hero” leading the way at No. 1. Fans very much wanted the full album, anyway — of the nearly 1.6 million album units registered for “Midnights,” 1,140,000 were copies purchased in the form of the full album. It became Swift’s fifth album, out of her 10 original studio releases overall, to sell a million-plus copies in the first week out. The figure also represented the best first-week sales for an album by any performer since “Reputation” came out of the gate with 1,216,000.

Taylor Swift in Concert   She is, quite simply, a global superstar.   Taylor Swift is a seven-time GRAMMY winner, and the youngest recipient in history of the music industry’s highest honor, the GRAMMY Award for Album of the Year. She is the only female artist in music history (and just the fourth artist ever) to twice have an album hit the 1 million first-week sales figure (2010’s Speak Now and 2012’s RED ). She’s a household name whose insanely catchy yet deeply personal self-penned songs transcend music genres, and a savvy businesswoman who has built a childhood dream into an empire.   But the numbers don’t tell Taylor's story half as well as she could. After all, it’s the intangibles that elevate Swift into the stratosphere of our pop culture planet, allowing the 24-year old singer-songwriter to orbit in a more rarified air. Her large-scale charitable contributions are one thing, but it’s in the small gestures – the notes of compassion she posts on the Instagram photos of lovelorn fans, the genuine hugs she distributes without discretion – where Swift proves time and time again that platinum-selling, record-setting success has not changed her inherent nature. She is awkwardly honest and powerfully empathetic; a brazen superfan, loyal friend, fierce protector of hearts; and one of the world’s greatest ambassadors for the power of just being yourself.   Granted, for Taylor, “being herself” tends towards shimmering, gossamer perfection – but that’s an image regularly blown whenever she dons fake braces and a tri-pony to clown around on late night TV. She’s the first artist since the Beatles (and the only female artist in history) to log six or more weeks at #1 with three consecutive studio albums, and while she’s been named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World, she’s probably the only person on that list who uses social media to post notes to her best friends and videos of her cats.   As Billboard’s only artist to receive this nod twice and youngest-ever Woman of the Year prepares to release her fifth album, 1989, she finds herself, as always, in the glare of a blinding spotlight of expectation – but if you think that scares her, you haven’t been paying attention. She calls 1989 her most sonically cohesive collection, and armed with a multiple-week international No. 1 debut single, “Shake It Off,” she’s ready to blaze into the next phase of her still-young career, where she’ll continue to dance like no one’s watching, write like she stole our collective diary, and inevitably soar to ever-greater heights. All that’s left to wonder is how many more lives she’ll lift in the process.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Taylor Swift opened her U.S. concert series with a three-hour tour of her career.

Swift kicked off the first concert of the 52-date Eras Tour with a six-song set from her album “Lover” on Friday night at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, where the Super Bowl was played a month ago.

“I don’t know how to address the way this is making me feel right now,” Swift, who hasn’t toured since 2018, said early in the show.

She ended the concert with a seven-song set from her latest album “Midnights,” closing with the song “Karma.”

In between she played clusters of songs from most of her albums — and just one, “Tim McGraw,” from her 2006 self-titled debut. In the end it took 44 songs and just over three hours for her to span her 17-year career.

Having not toured for her previous three albums, this concert series is intended to play catchup by providing the live debut of many of those songs. When Swift announced the tour in November she called it “a journey through the musical eras of my career (past and present!).”

Swift seemed to acknowledge the Ticketmaster furor that sullied the run-up to the tour when she told the crowd of more than 70,000 that she understands it took “considerable effort” for them to be there .

After another show at the same venue Saturday night, the tour moves on to Allegiant Stadium outside Las Vegas and then AT&T Stadium near Dallas.

It concludes with two Los Angeles-area shows in August.

This story was first published on March 18, 2023. It was updated on March 19, 2023 to correct the number of dates on the tour. The number is 52, not 27.

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Movie Hits New Milestone

Taylor Swift has again proven that she's a pop culture icon after hitting another impressive milestone with her Eras Tour movie.

Swift embarked on the juggernaut global venture in March 2023 and eventually released a concert movie of it—titled Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour —which smashed box office records after its release in October.

It made $92 million in its first weekend and became the highest-grossing domestic concert film of all time just on those opening days. It also made $26 million on the first day of advanced ticket sales . The previous record of $16.9 million was held by Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021 .

Now it has surpassed $260 million at the box office, grossing $261,656,269 worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.

Domestically it has made $180,756,269, which is 69.1 percent of the total, and internationally it has raked in $80,900,000, accounting for 30.9 percent.

Taylor Swift during her Eras Tour

Newsweek emailed Swift's publicist for comment Wednesday.

The concert movie was shown in AMC , Cinemark and Regal cinemas in the U.S. and was also shown in Canada and Mexico. AMC previously confirmed that tickets for the Eras Tour movie were the highest advance sales in the company's 103-year history.

The entertainment company had already planned to run four showtimes per day on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, but then said "to accommodate this extraordinary demand... AMC already is adding additional auditoriums to play the concert film at numerous theaters throughout the United States."

Now fans can stream the Eras Tour movie online through platforms such as Amazon Prime, Disney+ and Apple TV depending on their location.

This year has already been huge for Swift, who not only became the first person to win Album of the Year four times at the Grammys in February but in January, she became the first person to have five albums each with over 7 billion streams on Spotify.

Swift's Eras Tour previously broke the Guinness World Record for the highest-grossing tour of all time. The 34-year-old singer-songwriter's dates began in March 2023 and are set to conclude in December 2024 after a total of 152 shows worldwide.

The tour's last concert was a sold-out show at the 55,000-seat National Stadium in Singapore on March 9. Swift is taking an extended break before her next concert, in France in May.

"We got to play 6 shows in Singapore for the most wonderful crowds — just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who traveled and put so much effort into being at our shows," Swift wrote on Instagram on March 10.

"What an unforgettable way to end this leg of the tour!! See you in May when we get back to the Eras Tour!! In the meantime, I've got an album to release."

Swift's success this year doesn't end there as she sent fans into a frenzy by releasing her highly anticipated album, The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD) on April 19.

Two hours after TTPD dropped, Swift revealed the ultimate bombshell to her legions of fans: she was releasing a secret double album. The second part includes 15 extra songs, bringing the total of newly released tracks to 31.

Within hours, TTPD started smashing streaming records, including becoming Spotify's most-streamed album in one day. TTPD got 300 million streams in 24 hours, Spotify revealed on its social media.

This broke the previous record that Swift also held with her album Midnights which achieved the feat of 185 million listens in a day.

The Staggering Economic Impact of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour

The Final Night Of Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour - Los Angeles, CA

Y ou don’t have to be a Swiftie to have been touched in some way by Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, a stadium arena experience that kicked off in March. The tour, which pays homage to every era of the artist’s illustrious 17-year career , is set to become the biggest tour of all time only a third of the way through its run.

If you live in one of the 20 locales Swift, 33, performed at in the last five months, your city has likely seen a boost in revenue from the hundreds of thousands of attendees who traveled from near and far. If you don’t—or simply couldn’t snag tickets due to the cost or the now infamous Ticketmaster snafu—chances are you’ve seen clips of the three-and-a-half hour show from celebrities’ Instagram stories.

While there’s much to say about the music, costumes, and production, the impact of the Eras Tour is starkly reflected in the numbers: a projected gross of $2.2 billion in North American ticket sales alone, and hundreds of millions of streams, reaching a nearly 80% spike in those listening to her music catalog in the weeks after the tour kicked off.

After 53 shows, the first U.S. leg of the tour came to a close on Aug. 9. Swift originally announced 27 shows and has since extended the tour, adding new dates in cities like New Orleans, Indianapolis, and Toronto, which are all now anticipating a local economic boost. Eras is set to go international this month, starting with four shows in Mexico City, continuing its five-continent run through November 2024.

Swift’s tour is in a league of its own, even among legendary groups like the Rolling Stones who have been touring for decades, other major touring artists like Harry Styles and Beyoncé and contemporaries like Adele with sold-out Las Vegas residencies, as the singer-songwriter brings her mega tour directly to her dedicated fans in various cities for multiple nights.

The reasons behind the Eras Tour's unmatched success are many. Nora Princiotti, staff writer at The Ringer and co-host of the podcast of Every Single Album: Taylor Swift, attributes part of the tour’s success to the sheer depth and popularity of Swift’s music catalog. “I don't know that anybody envisioned a tour of this scale ever happening. She can go three and a half hours and just hit after hit after hit,” says Princiotti.

There’s also the timing: The tour has become the perfect outing for concert-goers itching for a post-pandemic live music immersive experience. “We are in an experience economy where people crave going out and participating in social events,” says Alice Enders, a music industry analyst at Enders Analysis and a former senior economist at the World Trade Organization. “It's no surprise that people are flocking to this Eras Tour experience in what is increasingly an otherwise digital environment we live in.”

And fans are acutely aware of Swift being connected to her body of work in a way that few artists are—she writes all her songs, has been protective of her music in the streaming boom, and is now releasing re-recordings of her discography to reclaim their master rights. It all adds up to a music industry enterprise the likes of which the world has never seen.

The economic and cultural impact of the Eras Tour

Analysts estimate that the Eras Tour will likely surpass the $1 Billion mark next March, while Swift is touring internationally. If this projection holds true, she will achieve the milestone of the biggest tour in music history, surpassing Elton John's multi-year farewell tour, which wrapped up earlier this summer and holds the current record of $939 million. The Eras Tour would then continue for another seven months before concluding in November of 2024 in Toronto—that is, unless rumors that Swift will release more dates come to fruition.

But the money goes far deeper than just net profits. The Eras Tour is projected to generate close to $5 billion in consumer spending in the United States alone. “If Taylor Swift were an economy, she’d be bigger than 50 countries,” said Dan Fleetwood, President of QuestionPro Research and Insights, in a story for GlobalNewsWire . On the opening night in Glendale, Ariz., the concert brought in more revenue for local businesses than Super Bowl LVII , which was held back in February in the same stadium. To use that event as a comparison, Swift has been performing the equivalent of two to three Super Bowls every weekend for the past five months (and six of seven nights at her last round of shows in Los Angeles).

Typically, every $100 spent on live performances generates an estimated $300 in ancillary local spending on things like hotels, food and transportation. But for the Eras Tour, Swifties are taking this to the next level, dropping an estimated $1,300-$1,500 on things like outfits and costumes, merchandise, dining, and travel—boosting local economies by hundreds of millions of dollars in one weekend.

The Illinois governor credited the musician with reviving the state’s tourism industry after her three nights in Chicago. She was even mentioned in a report by the Fed , crediting her with fueling the national tourism industry.

The enthusiasm is so great that cities along her tour have experienced supply shortages. For one example: Swift mentions “friendship bracelets” in the song You’re on Your Own, Kid , off her most recent album Midnights . Swifties have taken this and run with it. Every concert is filled with tens of thousands of fans wearing and exchanging beaded bracelets spelling out the names of Swift songs and colloquialisms all the way up their arms. While this bracelet economy has brought new revenue to local businesses, businesses have also reported bead and sequin shortages .

This enthusiasm comes despite broader economic challenges. “There’s a cost of living crisis and people are still forking out thousands of dollars to see Taylor Swift,” says Enders. Despite this, a national study of concertgoers shows that even with an average of more than $1,300 spent per event, 91% said they would go again.

Not only is the Eras Tour an economic boon, but it has also become a cultural phenomenon. Every city Swift has visited over the course of the tour so far has pulled out all of the stops for her : Minneapolis was renamed “Swiftie-apolis;” Santa Clara, Calif., made her the honorary mayor; the New Jersey governor named the state sandwich of New Jersey after her. Now world leaders like the Chilean President, the mayor of Budapest, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are asking her to bring the tour to their countries. The FBI tweeted out a Taylor Swift pun in July.

Princiotti says that in her role as a fan, it’s been both exciting and strange to see such a global embrace of Swift. “For as big as she has been for so long, even if this is a new peak, I think a lot of fans feel like they've spent their entire lives defending their love of her,” she says. “And there's something very strange in seeing the U.S. government, or all of these various municipalities, just desperate to get a little sliver of the clout that comes from just being somewhat associated with Taylor Swift.”

Beyond the concert tickets

Donning beaded bracelets and drawings of the figure “13” (Swift’s favorite number) on their hands, many Swifties attending her shows are just as eager to secure exclusive tour merchandise. Thousands of them line up for hours in advance to snag the coveted merch of $75 hoodies, $55 long-sleeve shirts and $45 T-shirts.

Fans are even clamoring to get their hands on physical copies of Swift’s music. “Streaming has taken over the purchase of the physical album product, but Taylor Swift is among the artists that still makes money from vinyl and CDs because they’ve become collector's items for her fans,” says Enders.

Swift creates different editions, reissues, and extras that make fans want to collect more and more copies of her albums in different forms. For her Midnights album, four of the five different album covers fit together to form a clock face, while another comes with bonus tracks, making buying different versions of the album a necessity for true fans. And some diehards admit they’ve purchased the vinyl versions without even owning a record player.

Midnights was the top-selling vinyl record in 2022, with 945,000 copies sold, making it the best-selling physical album since 1991. One out of every 25 vinyl records sold last year was a Taylor Swift album, and she is the first artist in history to simultaneously occupy at least seven of the top 10 spots on the Vinyl Albums chart. For her newest re-recorded album set to come out in October, 1989 (Taylor’s Version) , Swift has already released multiple vinyl and special edition deluxe CDs for pre-order on her website , each with different cover art and unique additions.

The success of Swift’s re-recording project

Swift’s mega tour isn’t the only thing she’s dominated. Her streaming and chart success from her constant release of new and re-recorded music (six going on seven albums in the last three years) adds to the vast project that is Swift’s domination of the global music industry.

“This moment for her is like an excellent HBO miniseries that’s not just a primary narrative, but also a B plot and a C plot where the main narrative is the tour, but underneath that we have the album re-recordings,” said Charlie Harding, music journalist and co-host of the podcast @SwitchedOnPop .

Swift’s “Taylor’s Version” re-recording project is an effort she started in 2019, when music mogul Scooter Braun bought record masters for her entire discography from her prior music label Big Machine Records. So far, Swift has released three re-recorded albums: Fearless (Taylor’s Version) , Red (Taylor’s Version), and Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), with the re-recorded editions all including additional “vault songs” that didn’t make it to the final versions of their original albums.

Read more: Why Music Manager Scooter Braun Is at the Center of a Media Storm

Fans have embraced Swift’s attempt to claim her music back, opting to stream the re-recordings more than the original versions, thus dethroning the catalog once owned by Braun. (He sold the rights to Shamrock Holdings in November 2020.)

Swift’s project has broken several music records in the wake of the album re-releases. Her latest re-recorded album, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) , a recording of her 2010 studio album, made history when it went straight to the top of the charts as her 12th no. 1—making her the woman with the most no. 1 albums and the first person with five albums simultaneously on Spotify’s Top Ten Albums Global chart.

And Swift’s Eras tour is directly linked to the success of her streaming. “The live music performance is actually a driver to the streaming platforms,” says Enders. “When you go to see an Eras show you’re rediscovering Taylor Swift and you go back to listen to her music when you get home and in the days after.”

So far, Swift is halfway through her re-recording project, with three albums still to come. Swift announced on Aug. 9, when closing out her six-show residency at Los Angeles’ So-Fi Stadium, that her next re-recorded album will be her synth pop 1989 album, due Oct. 27.

Surprise!! 1989 (Taylor’s Version) is on its way to you 🔜! The 1989 album changed my life in countless ways, and it fills me with such excitement to announce that my version of it will be out October 27th. To be perfectly honest, this is my most FAVORITE re-record I’ve ever done… pic.twitter.com/JFYOWhBxhj — Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) August 10, 2023

“It's kind of like the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” says Harding, using another onscreen metaphor. “We're in the Taylor Swift cinematic universe at any given moment. There's endless amounts of discussion to be had at every level of this world that she's created, and each one I think serves a different audience.”

With more tour stops on the horizon and three more albums to re-release, Swift isn’t slowing down any time soon. The music sensation has even exceeded her own expectations. On the last night of the first U.S. leg of the tour, Swift told the crowd, “I figured it would be fun, but I did not know it would be like this.”

Harding says it’s not just a recipe for financial success, but for spectacular longevity. “Taylor Swift has the capacity to be around for a whole lifetime,” he says. “I think the big question I have is: where do you go from here?”

Correction, Aug. 24

The original version of this story stated that Scooter Braun still owns the master rights to Swift's first six albums. Braun sold the rights to Shamrock Holdings in November 2020.
