• Essex Coastal Scenic Byway

The 90-mile roadway links 14 coastal communities from Lynn to Salisbury and features scenic views, period architecture, historic sites and recreational opportunities. With the twin goals of preserving the byway’s intrinsic qualities and spurring investment in its infrastructure, attractions and amenities, Essex Heritage worked to secure state scenic byway designation and federal funding for a comprehensive management plan that is guiding community and regional leaders in their efforts to implement tourism-based economic development.

'It’s a big time of year for us': Tourism Windsor-Essex Pelee Island launches new birding pass

Warmer weather means birdwatching season is here as the spring songbird migration gets underway across much of Windsor and Essex County.

Tourism Windsor-Essex Pelee Island (TWEPI) has launched a new WE Bird Trail digital pass that connects birders from near and far to various bird watching sites and nearly 50 bird-friendly certified businesses or locations across the region.

“We really evolved it this year to include a digital pass that brings in businesses who really wants to celebrate this season,” said TWEPI Vice President of Destination Development Lynnette Bain.

“These are businesses who may be connected to the birding interests somehow. They might offer early morning breakfasts and an early morning coffee or items that birders might be interested in and this is a way to engage those businesses,” Bain added.

Bain said tourism officials expect upwards of 50,000 bird watchers to flock to the region over the next several weeks, with popular bird-watching locations like Point Pelee National Park and Hillman Marsh Conservation Area attracting thousands of birds and binoculars.

Bain explained, “When you're out birding, you can stop, there's a map that will help guide you. You can plan a route and you can figure out where do I want to eat lunch, where do I want to shop, where can I can support these businesses that are bird friendly?”

Whether going on a guided walk or exploring on your own, Bain said there is something for everyone.

She continued, “So when you go for a day at Point Pelee National Park, you might see up to 100 different bird species in one visit. It's unbelievable. So you really want to go for that experience to get through interpretive services.”

essex county tourism

Bain noted when an out of town visitor comes to the area, they spend approximately $100 to $150 on a day trip, but that if they stay overnight, the amount spent nearly doubles.

“We're looking at bringing almost six million people this year to the region and birding is one of our top drivers,” Bain told CTV News Windsor. “So anything we can do to attract people from afar, that's why we have these types of programs.”

Business has already started to pick up according to staff at Pelee Wings Nature Store near Point Pelee National Park.

“We're seeing more people come in from Michigan. We're seeing people travel a lot more. It started already started a few weeks early, especially with the weather,” said co-owner Butch Demers. “Thousands of people come this way. All of the hotels are full. It's exciting for us. We have a great team here that are very, very knowledgeable.”

“It's a big time a year for us!” Demers continued. “A large percentage of our sales comes in late April and May especially around binoculars and scopes.”

Demers said their location offers a unique experience for bird watchers because of migration and the large number of species that come through the area, giving bird watchers a variety of birds to admire.

‘We think it's the best spot in Canada,” he said.

About the County

Email this page

Essex County is bounded on three sides by water – Lake Erie to the south, the Detroit River to the west and Lake St. Clair to the north. We are Ontario's warmest county and home to Point Pelee , the southernmost point of mainland Canada.

We are located about four hours from Toronto but just a few minutes from Detroit, which is actually to the north. It is not uncommon for Essex County residents to cheer on Detroit sports teams or take day trips to soak in art galleries and museums. Many Essex County residents actually commute to work there.

The Spitfire Memorial in Essex

Essex County has robust agricultural and manufacturing sectors and a rapidly expanding tourism industry, with commercial wineries and craft breweries.

We have many conservation areas and parks , including Point Pelee National Park, and are fast becoming a cycling hotspot with an ever-expanding network of trails spanning an area of 1,851 square kilometres.

We are an attractive and affordable place to raise a family, offering advanced educational opportunities at the  University of Windsor and St. Clair College and a mix of rural and urban living in close proximity to big-city amenities in both Windsor and Detroit.

Associations

Canadian Vintners Association The Canadian Vintners Association (CVA) was created in 1975 as the Canadian Wine Institute and renamed in 2000 to better reflect the growth of this dynamic industry. The CVA represents over 90% of all wine produced in Canada including 100% Canadian, Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) wines and International-Canadian Blended (ICB) wine products. The Canadian wine market remains strong, supported by a continuing growth in consumption as Canadians’ beverage of choice. The sales and marketing efforts of Canadian vintners will continue to drive wine sales through all of our trade channels, including estate wineries, provincial and territorial liquor boards, private retail outlets, licensed establishments, and wine agencies.

VQA Ontario (Vintners Quality Alliance of Ontario) VQA Ontario is a provincial regulatory authority that administers Ontario’s wine appellation system. Its primary functions are independent wine testing, audits, inspections and compliance. It also acts as a resource for independent information about Ontario’s appellations and wines of origin. VQA Ontario was designated as Ontario’s wine authority under the Vintners Quality Alliance Act, 1999.

Wine Country Ontario Ontario, situated in central Canada, extends further south than any other province in Canada. Its wine grape growing regions are located along a strip of land that parallels the Canada/U.S. border along the northern shore of Lake Erie, as well as along the southern shoreline of Lake Ontario. The Great Lakes help to provide a temperate continental climate that has contributed to creating a zone in Ontario called the Carolinian Forest, named after the same habitat found as far south as the Carolinas in the United States. It is considered a Canadian national treasure with more species of rare plants and animals than any other place in Canada.

Wines of Canada: Pelee Island Wine History Pelee Island has one of the longest growing season the most frost free days and the most heat units. It was and is a unique microclimate for growing quality grapes. It is one of Canada’s oldest grape growing regions. One of the very early wineries of Canada was built on the island in 1866: the Vin Villa Winery officially opened in 1871 and became renowned for its rare Catawba wines and the many awards it won from as far away as Europe.

Essex County, NY, officials holding ‘Community Conversations’ on youth addiction

E LIZABETHTOWN, N.Y. (WCAX) - A series of community conversations are underway this week in Essex County, New York, focused on preventing youth addiction.

County officials say the first of four events kicked off on Tuesday night and that the goal is to educate the community on the link between traumatic childhood events and later mental health and addiction problems. The hope is for schools and parents to foster a response system to support kids during times of hardship.

“We need the community at the table partnering with the provider system and school system to create more protective factors that help build resiliency,” said Essex County Mental Health’s Terri Morse.

Three more events are planned, with the next one taking place Thursday night from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Schroon Lake Central School.

US Rep. Donald Payne Jr., a Democrat from New Jersey, has died at 65 after a heart attack

essex county tourism

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Jr., a New Jersey Democrat and a member of the Congressional Black Caucus who replaced his father in the seat, died Wednesday after a heart attack this month that left him hospitalized, officials said. He was 65.

Gov. Phil Murphy called his fellow Democrat a “steadfast champion for the people of New Jersey” in a statement confirming Payne’s death.

Payne served for 12 years in the Newark-area seat his father had held for more than two decades. Representing a heavily Democratic and majority Black district, Payne drew strong marks from liberal organizations for his voting record.

“With his signature bowtie, big heart, and tenacious spirit, Donald embodied the very best of public service,” Murphy said. “As a former union worker and toll collector, he deeply understood the struggles our working families face, and he fought valiantly to serve their needs, every single day.”

New Jersey’s Democratic Party chair, LeRoy Jones Jr., called Payne a “towering figure in both our party and our community.”

The Congressional Black Caucus said Payne would be remembered for his kindness and generosity and called him an advocate for progressive causes including making college tuition free, expanding voting rights and fighting climate change.

Payne had previously served as City Council president in Newark, New Jersey’s largest city, and on the Essex County Board of Commissioners.

Payne’s office had said his heart attack was connected to complications from diabetes. Payne’s father, Donald Milford Payne, held the congressional seat before him. When the elder Payne died in 2012, the younger ran successfully in a special election to succeed him.

Payne had won reelection six times since. The district covers parts of Newark and its heavily populated suburbs.

Murphy’s office declined to comment Wednesday on the governor’s plans to order a special election to fill the rest of Payne’s current term, which ends Jan. 3, 2025.

Payne already filed paperwork by the March deadline to run for reelection and is to appear uncontested on the June 4 primary ballot. Should he remain on the primary ballot and win the nomination, Democratic Party committee members in his district could choose a replacement candidate to run in the November general election.

The district is likely to remain in Democratic hands, with registered Democrats outnumbering Republicans there more than 6 to 1.

A New Jersey colleague, Democratic U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, called Payne a “truly great public servant” who liked to call him “Uncle Frank” and had fought to raise awareness for diabetes and colorectal cancer prevention and to replace lead pipes in Newark.

Another colleague, Democratic U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, of Mississippi, called Payne a “thoughtful legislator, a dear friend, and a man of such a kind and affable nature that he was well-liked and respected” by both Democrats and Republicans.

“Most importantly, he was a devoted family man, and it was this role that drove his passion for the policies he pursued,” Thompson said.

As a member of the Committee on Homeland Security, Payne made school security a priority, helping to establish a School Safety Task Force at the Department of Homeland Security and pressing for federal agencies to take extra precautions for children and schools during emergencies, Thompson said.

“He leaves behind an important legacy through his congressional service: making children safer. In his honor, we will continue that legacy,” Thompson said.

Payne’s survivors include his wife, Beatrice, and their three children, Murphy said.

By LOLITA C. BALDOR (Associated Press) WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. is expected to announce Friday that it will provide about $6 billion in long-term military aid to Ukraine, U.S. officials said, adding that it will include much sought after munitions for Patriot air defense systems. US expected to provide $6 billion to fund long-term weapons contracts for Ukraine, officials say

Two U.S. officials say Ukraine has sidelined U.S.-provided Abrams M1A1 battle tanks for now in its fight against Russia. This is in part because Russian drone warfare has made it too difficult for them to operate without detection or coming under attack. The sidelining of the Abrams reflects evolving battlefield tactics where drone use has made it virtually impossible for them to maneuver without detection. A $1 billion aid package announced this week includes munitions specifically able to take down drones and additional air defense systems. The U.S. agreed to send 31 Abrams to Ukraine in January 2023 after an aggressive monthslong campaign by Kyiv.

'Tourism is real money': Commissioner Ezell talks tourism, growth in Madison County

TDTD Commissioner Mark Ezell shows a chart graphing the rate of Madison County visitor spending from 2015 through 2022 during a Jackson Chamber Breakfast Club Meeting inside DoubleTree Hotel in Jackson, Tenn., on Friday, April 19, 2024.

Ranking 11th in the country for travel spending in 2023, Tennessee continues to be a hub for tourism, and the Jackson-Madison County area is poised to continue being a top beneficiary, according to the state's commissioner of tourism.

As part of its "Breakfast Club" series, the Greater Jackson Chamber welcomed Commissioner of Tourist Development Mark Ezell Friday as its keynote speaker.

A member of Gov. Bill Lee's cabinet since 2019, Ezell emphasized the value of a visitor, speaking to both state and local success in tourism.

In a state where, in 2023, tourism brought in a record-breaking $29 billion in direct spending, Ezell's department operates under a $50 million budget.

With this at the forefront of his presentation, he hoped attendees walked away from his discussion with the understanding that "tourism is real money."

How does Madison County compare?

Visitor spending in Madison County totaled $312.5 million in 2022, up 7% from 2021.

As a result, Madison County households save an average of $842 in taxes annually.

"Look at that trend, we've had growth in Jackson and Madison County," Ezell said.

Along with places like the Legends of Tennessee Music Museum, he noted the area's "tremendous outdoor assets" like Chickasaw State Park and Pinson Mounds as top local attractions.

Per an announcement made in December 2023, Jackson is set to host the inaugural State Games of Tennessee, an amateur Olympic-style sporting event, in June 2025.

Ezell says this is a premier opportunity for our region.

"We're just so excited, first of all, that Tennessee has put in a state games program and then second, we're excited for Jackson to get to have that," he said.

"It's going to really mean a lot of people come, they'll spend the night, they'll visit those restaurants, stay in the hotels. All of those things are literally an economic boost as well as, branding-wise, Jackson has done a great job in sports and helping promote tournaments and things like that, so this is just going to be one of those that really boosts that even greater over the upcoming years."

Developing tourism statewide

Emphasizing the recreational activities that the Volunteer State has to offer is a top priority for Ezell's department.

He is leading initiatives like Bill Dance Signature Lakes and BikeTN, aimed at showcasing the state's 14 premier fishing locations and more than 50 biking trails.

"We will have interstate signs for people to go get the best bass fishing in the nation all under the name of Bill Dance Signature Lakes," he said.

Promoting cultural awareness remains another concerted goal for Ezell's department.

In development since 2018, is the U.S. Civil Rights Trail consists of 15 sites across the state and led by the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis.

"It's a really important thing for us to bring visitors to so they can have their hearts transformed and we can help change the world," he said.
