So perhaps even 2.30 hours in Hvar Town is sufficient.

Another option for visiting Hvar from Split on a day trip during the off-season is to take a car ferry from Split to Stari Grad. In winter, the car ferry departs daily from Split at 5.30 a.m. and 11 a.m. and returns to Split at 2.30 p.m. and 8.30 p.m.

Visiting Hvar in winter by car is much better because it allows you to explore the entire island. You can enjoy Hvar’s beautiful beaches without the summer crowds. Though the island is known for its nightlife, Hvar is an absolute joy to visit by day, as well. Whether you’re looking to wander around a compact and historic old town, find some of the best swimming spots in Croatia, lounge on the beach, prance in lavender fields or sip some local wine, there is a lot to do when spending a day in Hvar.

How to Get from Split to Hvar

There are numerous ways to get from Split to Hvar and which you choose all depends on your personal preferences and what you’re looking for in a day trip.

If you want the most flexibility on your Split to Hvar day trip, then your best bet is to go by car. This option will also include a ferry, just one that can accommodate vehicles.

There are fewer car ferries that leave from Split daily than there are passenger ferries and it takes about twice the time so be aware of this. Like passenger ferries, the car ferries are more frequent in the summer months.

Car ferries leave from the port of Split and arrive at the port of Stari Grad which is located about a 30-minute drive from Hvar Town and the journey is about 2 hours. There is also an option to grab a car ferry from the town of Drvenik that will take you to the town of Sucaraj at the eastern tip of the island.

Keep in mind that while this ferry journey is quicker at about 40 minutes, it also takes about 1.5 hours to drive to Drvenik and another hour to drive from Sucaraj to the western part of the island with the majority of tourist sites. Therefore it’s not a good option for a day trip and is only a good choice if you plan to stay in Hvar.

Having your own car gives you a lot more flexibility to see quite a bit of the island and get around Hvar easily within the confines of one day.

You will have the ability to venture beyond Hvar Town and take in some of the best beaches and some further-flung areas that you wouldn’t be able to get to without your own vehicle should you wish. You can browse car hire options here .

Hvar Day Trip Itinerary

This itinerary is flexible and is great for both those with a car and without. Whether you’re simply looking to explore Hvar town and swim in the crystal clear waters surrounding the island or you’re keen to hit the road and get a bit off the beaten path, seeing Hvar in a day is a day well spend!

The best and easiest way to begin your day trip to Hvar is in Hvar Town itself. Whether you’re arriving via passenger ferry or by car into Stari Grad, we recommend heading here first as it can get very busy as the day goes on.

Begin your day with an excellent view by heading up to the Spanish Fortress. If you have a car, you’re likely going to want to jump in it as it is a bit of a hike up but the view from above is worth it even if you go on your own two feet. If you don’t have a car, it is only about a fifteen-minute walk from the town centre, however, it is quite steep.

You have to pay to enter the fortress (it was €10 per person), however, you can still take in great views of the town and the Pakleni islands below.

As you make your way down from the fortress, take the time to meander through the streets of Hvar Town itself.

There are some lovely winding alleyways to lose yourself in, along with a charming seaside promenade that is perfect for a leisurely stroll. You can also take in the St Stephen’s Cathedral and St Stephen’s Square and wander along to the Franciscan Monastery.

Head to the Beach

After a morning of exploration, it’s time to hit the beach and soak up the beautiful Adriatic sunshine. There are some lovely little swimming areas in Hvar town itself, however, they aren’t large and can generally fill up quite quickly in the warmer months. There is, for instance, a little beach below the Franciscan Monastery that you could splash around at.

However, if you want to head to a great beach, then consider visiting Pokonji dol Beach which is located just outside of the town centre. You can drive here and there is a large free car park or you could opt to walk or take a taxi. If you walk, it takes about 25 minutes and it’s a flat, minor stroll from the city centre.

The beach itself is, like many Croatian beaches, pebbly but large enough to accommodate several people. It’s set in a protected cove which makes it great for swimming and the crystal clear blue waters are incredibly inviting. There is also a bar and restaurant close by so you don’t need to go hungry while here.

From the beach, you also can view Pokonji Dol Island, which is a small, circular island with a lighthouse atop it.

Pakleni Islands

If you’re not keen to head to the beach and want something a bit more exciting, then hop on a water taxi and visit the nearby Pakleni Islands.

Also sometimes referred to as the Paklinski Islands, these is a small archipelago located just off the coast from Hvar and they’re easy to reach from the town centre.

In Hvar Town, there are plenty of places where you can hire a boat of your own or hop on a water taxi that will shuttle you to these little islands. You even could kayak to the islands if you want to get a bit more active. Here, you can enjoy some incredible swimming spots and bask in the crystal-clear Adriatic islands.

Water taxis from Hvar take off from the port of Hvar and are advertised all around the town. Generally, expect to spend around €10-13 for a return trip and there are a few sailings in the afternoon so you will get a few hours on the islands.

You can also choose to go on an organised tour such as this half-day sailing cruise or this kayaking adventure.

Explore Stari Grad

If you’re driving yourself, then make sure to carve out some time at the end of your one day in Hvar to explore the lovely town of Stari Grad before you head back to Split.

This is one of the oldest towns on Hvar (in English, Stari Grad literally means old town) and offers a quiet and more relaxed vibe than in Hvar Town.

Like Hvar Town, there is a tranquil harbourside promenade to wander along and it’s also lined with restaurants and bars, so it’s a great place to grab a drink and relax before hopping back on the ferry. The town of Stari Grad itself also has a lot of lovely, winding alleyways to get lost in and it’s really a charming place to go and explore.

If you don’t want to explore another town, you could also use this opportunity to head to one of the many wineries on Hvar before you catch your ferry.

Though Croatia may not spring to mind as a wine destination (and even Korcula has more of a reputation as a wine island), there are plenty of vineyards dotting the islands that offer tastings. You can take this wine tasting tour if you want to explore with a guide.

There are also plenty of other gastronomic places to stop off at if you’re not interested in wine. There are countless places that produce olive oil or sell Hvar lavender products that you can visit, as well.

In fact, if you’re interested in visiting a lavender farm on the island, then direct yourself to a place called “Lavanda Hvar” where you can get some great photos of the iconic lavender fields.

This field is located just outside of the town of Jelsa, about a 30-minute drive from Hvar Town and about 10 minutes from Stari Grad.

Where to Stay in Split

As the speedboat ride can sometimes get a bit bumpy when the weather creates rougher sea conditions, the tour isn’t recommended for pregnant women or for those who have neck or back problems. You can be rest assured that the skipper will provide you with the smoothest ride possible.

WHAT TO BRING FOR THE BEST EXPERIENCE ON YOUR SPLIT TO HVAR DAY TRIP

You’ll be provided with a wind jacket in case it gets cool out on the water which can happen even during the summer, in the early morning hours as we depart and in the evening while making our return. The strong Mediterranean sun means you should bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat that stays well-secured so that it won’t blow off. You’ll also want a towel, a bathing suit, some extra clothes to change into in case what you’re wearing gets wet, and a camera for snapping shots of all the incredible scenery and wildlife. To avoid getting pricey electronic equipment wet, you may want to stow it in a “dry” bag. You’ll have opportunities to enjoy local foods and beverages on the trip, but you might want to bring some snacks to soothe any hunger pangs that might arise before we stop. Carry some cash (in kuna) too as some smaller, local restaurants may not accept credit cards.

PRECAUTIONS WHEN SNORKELLING

As we want you to have the safest and most enjoyable experience possible, it’s important to be extra-cautious when snorkelling as the sea surrounding the islands is so clear that depth often seems less than it really is. Please don’t overestimate yourself as it could put you in jeopardy – we want you to return home unharmed, happy and filled with joyful memories of your time here.

DOLPHIN WATCHING

There is a good chance that you’ll be able to see dolphins while you’re on this magical Croatian tour. The animals are well-known for their intelligence and curiosity, but they also have another characteristic that not many know about – they inhabit only the cleanest, most pristine waters, which is why groups of dolphins are often seen as we cruise around the islands through the crystal-clear sea that surrounds them. Be sure to keep a watchful eye out, although our skipper is especially good at spotting them. A short stop will be made so that everyone can enjoy the moment and time for capturing photos.

BRAC STONE AND WHY IT’S FAMOUS

As you’ll be visiting Brac, the island that’s become famous for its stone, you might want to know a bit more about it before you go. It’s been mined from the quarries here for centuries. The glistening white stone is indigenous to the island. It was used to build homes, grand Baroque and Renaissance palaces, and even ancient Roman palaces and some notable landmarks like the White House in Washington. Brac is also home to Croatia’s only stonemasonry school, where students who specialise in sculptures carve them from the local stone using traditional tools.

WINE TASTING

The cultivation of grapes and winemaking in Croatia began with the Illyrians followed by the Greeks. In fact, the country hosts the world’s oldest continuously planted vineyard, located on the southern slopes of Hvar Island which has been planted with wine grapes for over 2,400 years. Many wine enthusiasts join our tours – if that’s you, you should know that some of the most popular wines to try when the opportunity arises. Pošip is a white wine with an intense flavour and aroma, think figs and dried apricots. It’s elegant and well-balanced with a specific character that reflects its native terroirs. Plavac Mali is one of Croatia’s most well-known wines – plavac means ‘blue’ and mali means ‘small’ which aptly describes the small blue grapes on the vine. It’s a rich, robust red that packs a powerful punch, high in tannins and alcohol.

Planning a Split to Hvar day trip? This guide covers everything you need to know so you can plan the perfect day trip to Hvar from Split!

Glamorous parties, jaw-dropping beaches, breathtaking scenery, incredible food… There’s a reason Hvar Island makes it onto nearly everyone’s Croatia itinerary. Hvar Island is like the St. Tropez of Croatia. Dazzling with its sparkling seafront, charming visitors with its quaint old towns, and luring party-seekers into its epic social scene.

Stars like Beyonce and even Prince Harry have stepped foot onto the glittering shores of Hvar, making it one of Croatia’s most coveted island getaways. However, the island’s celebrity status does come with a price tag. If you are trying to save money, visiting Croatia on a budget, or are simply short on time, a Split to Hvar day trip might just be the right choice for you.

Luckily, Hvar Island is only a short ride away from Split, which makes it easy to visit in just one day. As someone who has been living in Croatia since 2014, I’ve thoroughly traveled the country and have visited Hvar many times (it’s one of my favorite islands!). I’ve put all of my knowledge into this guide to help you plan the perfect Split to Hvar day trip and ensure you get the most out of your time while on the island.

How to Plan the Perfect Split to Hvar Day Trip in 2023

With over 2,800 hours of sunshine per year, Hvar is the sunniest island in the Adriatic Sea! Located 40km (25 miles) off the Croatian coast, Hvar is a stunning summer destination with plenty to explore and discover.

From its incredible beaches and lush natural landscapes, to its charming historical town full of amazing food – there’s something for everyone on this gorgeous island. And if you’re looking for a bit of excitement, Hvar has been dubbed as one of the most incredible party destinations in all of Croatia.

If you’re not the party type, don’t let that deter you. It is entirely possible to enjoy the history and natural beauty of Hvar without getting near the clubs. So whether you want to relax or live it up in the nightlife, Hvar will not dissapoint.

While visiting Hvar on a day trip is totally doable if you are short on time, it will only allow you to scratch the surface of what this majestic island has to offer. So if you can, I highly recommend staying for at least a few days.

How to Get From Split to Hvar

Planning a Hvar trip from Split is pretty easy! There are three ways you can reach Hvar from Split, all of which involve a boat. Since Hvar is an island and there is no Hvar Airport , you’ll need to take the public ferry, a private boat, or an organized group tour to reach it.

Split to Hvar Ferry

Getting from Split to Hvar by ferry is the easiest and cheapest way to reach the island. There are several ferry companies that operate routes between the two destinations, each with their own timetables.

The experience is relatively similar across the board. All Hvar ferries have restrooms and some even have a cafe on board where you can order coffee or something to drink. Most ferries have an indoor, air-conditioned area, and an outdoor area where you can enjoy the sea breeze. Seats are not assigned on the ferries, so if you want to snag a good spot, get in line at least 30 minutes or more before departure.

The only major difference among the ferry operators is the time it takes for the ferry to reach Hvar from Split. When booking your ticket, make sure you select Hvar, Hvar or Hvar Town, Hvar as your final destination from Split as there are routes that travel to other towns on the island.

Jadrolinija also offers a car ferry from Split to Hvar, however the journey is longer and the ticket cost is higher if you do want to bring a vehicle. Therefore, I’d only recommend taking the car ferry if you plan to explore the island for a number of days.

How long is the ferry from Split to Hvar?

The journey time from Split to Hvar can take anywhere from 50 to 70 minutes , depending on the ferry company you travel with.

The earliest ferry departs Split at 7:30 AM during the summer months and the last ferry departs Hvar to go back to Split at 9:00 PM. The summer Hvar ferry schedule makes it very easy to organize your own Split to Hvar day trip. If you are traveling in the spring, fall or winter, be sure to check the ferry schedules as they will be far less frequent than in the summertime.

Split to Hvar ferry prices typically run around €18.00 for an adult one-way ticket, or €36.00 for a round-trip ticket. Of course, prices can change at any moment so it is best to check the official ferry provider you will be traveling with.

Do you need to prebook ferry from Split to Hvar?

If you are planning a day trip from Split to Hvar during the high season (the months of June through August), you may want to purchase your ferry tickets ahead of time. While the car ferries are larger and will typically have room for pedestrians, they can still fill up pretty quickly.

You can check the ferry schedules and purchase your Split to Hvar ferry tickets online on the official websites listed above. No need to print your ticket, just pull it up on your phone and show it upon boarding.

Split to Hvar Tour

Another option for visiting Hvar on a day trip from Split is to join in on an organized boat trip to Hvar from Split . There are numerous tours that depart from Split every single day during the summer, with options to choose among speedboats, catamarans, or sailboats. I’ve listed some of the best Hvar tours from Split below – just be sure to book in advance if you are traveling during high season as day tours sell out quickly!

How to Explore Hvar in One Day

The best way to explore Hvar Town is to rent a scooter for the day and discovering the island’s beautiful beaches and towns. When you exit the ferry in Hvar Town, there will be a number of places where you can rent a scooter for the day or even a vintage Volkswagen beetle convertible.

Both of these are great options for driving around and exploring Hvar Island on your own. The roads are well-paved and should be relatively easy to navigate. Hiring your own scooter or car for the day will allow you to save time and pack in more sights and activities during your Hvar day trip.

If you would prefer to just stay in Hvar Town and see everything on foot, this is totally doable as well. You might want to consider taking some time to explore the old town and then hopping on a boat from the main harbor to the nearby Pakleni island archipelago for swimming. These water taxis depart every hour and it takes only about twenty minutes to reach the islands.

This is the perfect way to get a taste of some of the areas best beaches without having to worry about renting a car or scooter. Just be sure to keep track of the time so that you catch the boat back and don’t miss the ferry from Hvar to Split!

How to Spend One Day on Hvar Island

Explore the old town.

When you arrive in Hvar, you will disembark the ferry right on the town’s sparkling waterfront promenade. The first thing you’ll want to do when you step off the boat is to get your bearings by strolling through Hvar’s charming cobblestone streets.

There is so much to discover in each narrow laneway, from local boutiques to darling restaurants and coffee shops, walking the town streets is an event in itself. Take the morning to wander around and explore before the sun heats up and temperatures rise.

A few noteworthy places to check out include the Venetian Loggia and Clock Tower as well as the 17th century Hvar Town Public Theater.

Check Out St. Stephen’s Square and Cathedral

Said to be the largest in all of Dalmatia, St. Stephen’s is a beautiful Renaissance square sprawling over 4,500 square meters. Like an icon towering at the end of the piazza, St. Stephen’s Cathedral cannot be missed. The cathedral and the square were once the most important spaces on the entire island.

Hvar Town square is lined with restaurants and cafes, making it a great place for people-watching. Take a break here and enjoy a cup of coffee or grab a bite to eat.

Take in the View From Fortica Fortress

One of the best things to do in Hvar is to enjoy the view from the fortress that safeguards the town.

From the town streets, follow the stairs that lead uphill and look for the signs that say “Fortica”. Soon, you will be on your way to the town’s historic Venetian citadel overlooking the entire town. The fort’s striking position makes it the perfect location for admiring the most incredible views over the town and the nearby Pakleni Islands.

You will need to purchase an entrance ticket to the fortress to gain access to the viewpoint. The ticket allows you to climb all the way to the very top of the fort and visit the small prison inside as well. The views from the top of the fort are undeniably amazing, and you can even enjoy a refreshment at the cafe.

Explore the Rest of Hvar Island

Once you’ve gotten to know the old town, it’s time to explore the rest of Hvar! Hvar has a gorgeous coastline, and one of the best ways to see it is to rent a scooter or hire a care for the day. One popular way to drive around the island is in a vintage VW Beetle Cabrio, which is not only fun to ride around, but also makes for some awesome photo ops.

The main roads on the island are quite good and maintained, so you can easily drive to Hvar’s best beaches , frolic through lavender fields, olive groves, and vineyards, and stop by a few towns. One town that is worth checking out on a one-day visit to the island is Stari Grad. Stari Grad literally translates to “Old Town” as this is the oldest town on the island (and one of the oldest settlements in Europe!).

Stari Grad is a sweet little former fishing village that feels much more local and authentic than the glitzy streets of Hvar Town. Stari Grad will give you a taste of what life was like on the island before it was discovered by tourists. Here, you’ll want to check out the home of Petar Hektorovic, wander around the impressive stone streets, and try a lavender ice cream before you leave.

Other towns worth checking out on the island are Jelsa and Vrboska.

However, simply driving around Hvar with no real destination can be an exhilarating journey in itself! Feel the wind blowing through your hair, bask in the sunshine on your skin, and take pleasure in magnificent coastal views as you traverse the island’s winding roads. From hidden viewpoints to abandoned stone villages, you never know what you’ll find on Hvar.

• Pokonji Dol – Just a short drive away from Hvar Town, Pokonji Dol is a fantastic commercialized beach that is dotted with a few restaurants, bars, and facilities.
• Dubovica – One of the most beautiful beaches on Hvar Island that can be easily recognized by only the iconic stone residence.
• Jagodna – Jagodna bay is a sweet little beach that is still relatively undiscovered. This tiny cove features small, almost sand-like pebbly beach, and high cliffs perfect for diving into the deep blue sea.
• Malo Zarace – Malo Zarace is a beautiful pebbled beach surrounded by rocky cliffs, and there are typically little to no crowds here.

If you plan to explore Hvar Town on foot rather than renting a scooter or car, check out these beaches that are within walking distance of the town:

• Hvar Town Beach – Hvar Town Beach is a small city beach that is located just a short walk away from the main square in front of the Franciscan Monastery. Despite the boat traffic near the beach, Hvar Town Beach is very clean and shallow, making it a great place to take a dip and to look for sharks in Croatia .
• Bonj Beach -Bonj Beach is situated directly in front of Hotel Amfora, about a ten-minute walk from the center of town. The pathway leading to the beach is beautifully paved with large stone tiles and leads you through a wonderfully scented pine forest to get to the beach. You do not have to be a guest of the hotel to swim at Bonj Beach and you can rent out a seaside bungalow or sun chair for a fee.
• Hula Hula Beach – continue walking a bit further from Bonj Beach and you’ll reach Hula Hula Beach, arguably one of the most popular spots on the island for good food, drinks, and partying. The sunsets from Hula Hula Beach Bar are particularly gorgeous, so it’s a good idea to head there in the evening for some drinks and appetizers before heading back to Split.

A public rocky beach also lines the pathway leading to Amfora Hotel. Due to its limited accessibility, this beach is much less crowded than both Hvar Town Beach and Bonj Beach. There are several ladders positioned along the rocks for climbing in and out of the water and the beach is perfect for anyone who enjoys a more rugged experience.

Additional Day Trips From Split

A Split to Hvar day trip is a great way to get to know one of Croatia’s most beautiful islands. However, if you are interested in exploring further, there are plenty of other destinations that would make excellent day trips from Split. Some of these include:

Split to Vis day trip Vis is Croatia’s furthest and perhaps most interesting island. This island was closed off to tourists for many years, allowing it to preserve much of its natural beauty and authenticity. If you have time, you might also consider visiting the Blue Cave just off the coast of the island of Vis.

Mostar day trip from Split Although located in the neighboring country of Bosnia & Herzegovina, the unique town of Mostar is only two hours away by car. This is a great destination for those wanting to experience something different from the typical coastal towns.

Split to Brač day trip Brač is a stunning island located just an hour ferry ride away from Split. This island is filled with breathtaking beaches and amazing hiking opportunities.

Split to Dubrovnik day trip Many people who are on a tight schedule or budget often wonder if a day trip to Dubrovnik is possible. A Split to Dubrovnik day trip is definitely doable, but it is not the best way to experience the Pearl of the Adriatic. The drive to Dubrovnik itself takes around three hours, which means that you will spend a minimum of six hours in the car just to get to and from the city.

If you are visiting during the high season, many large groups visit Dubrovnik on day trips, which means that by the time you arrive in the city, it will likely already be packed with tourists. Unfortunately, the only way to avoid this is to stay in or around Dubrovnik for a few days and visit the city in the morning (before the large groups arrive) or in the late afternoon and evenings.

How to Plan a Day Trip from Split to Hvar, Croatia

Hvar Island in Croatia is one of the most popular day trips from Split . And even if there are plenty of great things to do in Hvar that would keep you busy for days, sometimes all you have in your Croatia itinerary is one day only.

But no worries; you can easily go on a day trip from Split to Hvar and enjoy all the best attractions the beautiful island has to offer. This is what I did too, and I spent a great one day in Hvar.

Why visit Hvar

Hvar Island offers a perfect combination of history, centuries-old monuments, charming old towns, and beautiful nature with breathtaking landscapes. This is everything you probably wish for during your holidays in Croatia.

Even if you have only a few hours to enjoy the island, going on a day trip from Split to Hvar is a good idea. It will help you get to know Hvar a bit and see its highlights.

Since the island is pretty close to Split, and there are many fast connections between Hvar and mainland Croatia, visiting Hvar is very easy, either independently or with a tour.

Tours from Split to Hvar

If you don’t feel like visiting Hvar on your own, there are numerous highly-rated tours from Split to Hvar that you can join. Most of them have other places included in the agenda, too.

Depending on the tour, after departing from Split , you will either go directly to Hvar and start sightseeing there or go to other destinations first. The most popular ones included in the day trip from Split to Hvar are Blue Cave, Vis Island, Brac Island , and Pakleni Islands. In all the tours available, you will spend at least two hours on Hvar.

How to get from Split to Hvar island

Getting from Split to Hvar is actually very easy. Currently, four companies are operating on this route: Kapetan Luka, Jadrolinija, Adriatic Fast Ferries, and TP Line. They offer similar services and prices, so which one you will eventually take depends on your planned itinerary.

When I went for a day trip from Split to Hvar, I used Kapetan Luka on the way there, and Jadrolinija when I returned to the mainland. Depending on the connection, the travel time from Split to Hvar is usually around one hour; the fastest boats take 50 minutes.

The timetable depends on the season. In the summertime, there are up to twenty journeys per day between Split and Hvar, while in the low season, it can be only two or three. But even in winter months, you can plan an easy day trip from Split to Hvar, although it is not possible every day. You can check the timetable here.

Ferries depart in Split from the harbor near the bus station, only a short walk from the Diocletian’s Palace and the Old Town. At the entrance to the harbor, you will find the timetable of the next departures, the name of the company operating each of the journeys, and the number of docks the boat is at. Everything is clearly marked and easy to find. When you arrive at Hvar, again you are right in the center of the town, near all the attractions and best places to visit.

If you travel in the off-season, you will most likely get the ticket even shortly before the departure at the ticket offices in the harbor (each company has its booth). In the summer, purchasing the tickets at least a few days in advance is recommended. Split to Hvar is a popular route, and even if more boats are operating daily, tickets might still be sold out, especially for more popular departure times. You can buy tickets in Split or online here.

When looking for ports of arrival, you might notice three different places you can get to on Hvar island: the town of Hvar, Stari Grad, and Jelsa. If you are planning only a day trip from Split, you should go to Hvar town as that’s the most interesting place on the island. If you still have time in your itinerary, you can add Stari Grad to your one day on Hvar and go back to Split from there.

How to spend one day in Hvar

You will most likely choose the early boat from the mainland for your day trip from Split to Hvar. This way, you will arrive at the island’s main town before most people go out, which is perfect.

You can explore the Old Town with its winding lanes and the main square – St. Stephen’s Square – without too many people around and fully enjoy the central part of Hvar. Be sure to check the historical Arsenal building (originally from the 14th century) and go up the stairs on its side for the best view of the main square. You can also sit in one of the cafes for a quick breakfast and a cup of coffee before continuing your Hvar sightseeing.

After exploring the Old Town, head to the Spanish fortress for the best views of Hvar and its surroundings. You can walk up from the center (it’s relatively easy), or you can take the taxi all the way to the entrance.

No matter how you get there, you will not be disappointed as the panorama from the top is breathtaking, with the town of Hvar, the blue waters of the Adriatic Sea, and the Pakleni islands right in front of you. The fortress itself is an important historical landmark, dating back to the 13th century.

After visiting the fortress, on the way back, you can stop to see a beautiful little Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, parts of the city walls, or the abandoned Dominican Monastery.

These are all the must-see places and attractions of Hvar, so how you spend the rest of the day is up to you. There are different options for you to consider

Staying in Hvar town

You can stay in the town of Hvar and enjoy its vibrant atmosphere, with numerous outdoor cafes and restaurants. There are also lovely paths along the waterside offering beautiful views of the marina and Hvar town. The further away you go from the center, the closer to nature you get.

Go to the beach

There are some lovely beaches on Hvar island where you can relax and enjoy the sea and sun. Some of them, like Pokonji dol and Mekicevica beaches, are only a short walk away from Hvar town, so you can spend your day in Hvar mixing a bit of sightseeing with proper seaside holidays.

Visit nearby Pakleni Islands

Only a short boat ride away from Hvar town (10-20 minutes), you will reach Pakleni Islands – a picturesque archipelago that can be a good escape from the hustle and bustle of Hvar and Split. There are beautiful beaches and coves, some great snorkelling options, beautiful nature as well as some funky bars.

You can reach the islands from Hvar by water taxi; there are many boats ready to take you there moored in the Hvar marina.

Explore more of Hvar island

Since there are so many ferries between Hvar and Split, you still have to explore more of the island beyond the town of Hvar.

You can rent a car (those have daily rates; click here to get one ) or a scooter (paid by the hour) and visit other interesting places on Hvar Island. Some of the best places to stop in are the picturesque village of Vrboska, a lovely beach town Jelsa, or the oldest settlement in Hvar – Stari Grad.

If you don’t want to drive yourself, you can take the local bus to Stari Grad and after sightseeing in the town take the ferry from there back to Split (the downside of this option: the ferry terminal is some 2 km away from the center of the town so you might need to walk or take a taxi).

Returnig from Hvar to Split

Once you are done exploring Hvar Island, you can take the boat back from either Hvar town or Stari Grad. The last ferry departs from Hvar town at 9:00 pm in the high season between June and September, earlier in other months (but still doable for a day trip).

Again, it’s better to plan in advance and buy the ticket a few days before the departure. If you need to get your ticket in Hvar, the offices of different companies are scattered around the Old Town (but always close to the docks).

The ferry from Stari Grad is a slower one, taking two hours to reach Split – unlike the fast catamaran to Hvar town, this is a regular ferry that also takes cars onboard. The last one departs from Stari Grad at 17:30 outside of the summer months; in July and August, there are two more departures later in the day, at 20:00 and 23:00.

In Split, you will arrive at the same harbor in the city center where you departed from.

Final thoughts on Split to Hvar day trip

Even if Hvar offers so many attractions and you can easily spend longer holidays there, sometimes all you have is one day only. Fortunately, even in such a short time, you can see a lot, both historical landmarks and beautiful nature and landscape, and enjoy Hvar to the fullest.

With the proximity to Split and many fast connections, visiting Hvar is very easy, either independently or with a tour. And who knows, maybe this short trip to the island will inspire you to spend more time there in the future? One day I spent in Hvar certainly had that effect on me!

Split to Hvar Day Trip: Expert Guide & Pro Tips (2024)

If you have time to spare on your trip to Croatia , you should definitely take a day trip to Hvar from Split. And if you’re reading this blog post, chances are you’ve already had that thought! The good news is, since these two destinations are close and well-connected, you can do a Split to Hvar day trip easily.

My Hvar day trip from Split was one of the highlights of my trip to Croatia. I loved this Hvar so much that I actually visited it again on another day trip from Split just a few days later!

So, it’s safe to say I know a thing or two about how to take a day trip to Hvar from Split. After all, I’ve done it twice! Today, I’m going to share everything you need to know before you take a Hvar day trip, including how to get to Hvar from Split, what to do in Hvar, and how much everything will cost you.

Is Hvar Worth Visiting?

Hvar is 100% worth visiting. I loved it so much that I actually returned for a second day trip, and plenty of other travellers I met did the same.

Known as the playground of the rich (and when you see all the super-yachts in Hvar Town’s port you’ll know what I mean), Hvar is a gorgeous island just 40km from Split that feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Hvar is the place to kick back, relax and take it easy. It doesn’t hurt that it’s also drop-dead gorgeous!

There’s plenty to keep you occupied for one day in Hvar, but it’s worth pacing yourself. In summer, the heat in Hvar can be extreme, so slowing down your sightseeing is essential.

How to Get to Hvar From Split

There are two ways to get to Hvar from Split – by guided tour, or by ferry. I have done both! I’ll explain everything you need to know about both options so that you can decide what the best way to get to Hvar is for you.

Split to Hvar by Tour

I first visited Hvar on this 5 Island Tour from Split . I rave about this tour, because it’s the perfect way to check out the highlights of the Dalmatian Islands in just one day! During the tour, you spend around 3 hours on Hvar, which is perfect to get a taste for the island and see if you want to come back on a dedicated day trip.

I had an amazing time, and you can read my full review of the experience here . The 5 island tour is the perfect solution if you want to spend the day island hopping and visit Hvar as well as plenty of other awesome destinations.

Another option for a boat tour from Split is this Hvar, Brac and Pakleni boat tour , which includes lunch, a full day of catamaran sailing, and snorkelling stops!

Split to Hvar by Ferry

If you don’t want to join a tour, you’ll have to take the ferry from Split to get to Hvar. It’s possible to visit either Stari Grad or Hvar Town on the ferry from Split, but I highly recommend going to Hvar Town! This is the hub of the island, and it’s where you’ll find all the hippest beach hangouts.

What is the Best Ferry from Split to Hvar?

Three different ferry companies operate on the Split to Hvar route: Kapetan Luka , Jadrolinija and Krilo Shipping. The high-speed Kapetan Luka ferry is the one I went with, and it’s the one I recommend. The journey was smooth, everybody got a seat, and we arrived on time.

Kapetan Luka Jadrolinija have the most frequent ferry services, which means you can be a bit more flexible with your arrival and departure times. Krilo Shipping only runs a couple of journeys per day.

How Long is the Ferry from Split to Hvar?

Depending on which operator you choose, the ferry takes between 55 minutes and 1 hour and 40 minutes to make the journey from Split Port to Hvar Town on the island of Hvar. The majority of ferries on this route take around 1 hour 5 minutes.

How to Buy Ferry Tickets from Split to Hvar

As a pedestrian, simply arrive at the correct dock number at the port of Split around 30 minutes before departure. You can buy your tickets online, or just turn up at the ferry company’s ticket booth at the pier. As people begin to board you’ll have to get your ticket checked, and then you’re free to grab a seat! 

You don’t need to buy a return ticket if you don’t know what time you want to come back to Split yet. There are ferry ticket kiosks at the port in Hvar where you can buy them.

In the middle of summer, you should ideally buy your tickets in advance as some ferries do fill up quickly.

What is the Split to Hvar Ferry Like?

Most of the Split to Hvar ferries have an indoor area on the first floor and an open-top area on the second floor. Get in line for the ferry as early as you can so you can snag fabulous seats overlooking the ocean on the top floor!

How Much Does the Split to Hvar Ferry Cost?

The price of ferry tickets for the Split to Hvar route varies massively, costing between €8.50-20 each way. The price depends on which company you choose, how fast the journey is, and whether you’re travelling in the peak summer season or not.

Things to Do in One Day in Hvar

This one day in Hvar itinerary is based around Hvar Town (the most popular destination in Hvar). There’s enough to do here to fill an entire day and then some without needing a car or public transport.

If you’re looking to explore Hvar past Hvar Town, for example by visiting the town of Stari Grad, you really need to stay for at least one night.

Looming high over the Hvar Town, you’ll have a long uphill trudge through the narrow streets of the old town to get to the Tvrdava Fortress. I promise, though, the views over the town, the surrounding Pakleni Islands and the glittering ocean are worth it.

Because it’s such a slog to get there, and summer temperatures in Hvar can soar to up to 31°C , go here as soon as you arrive in Hvar to beat the heat!

The fort was built in the early 16th century, when Hvar was under Venetian rule, and was reconstructed in 1579. Entry tickets cost €5 , but you can enjoy its grounds and the views for free.

I didn’t go into the fort itself because I didn’t fancy spending a whole €5 and was already dying from the heat. Instead, I sat in the shade for a while and rehydrated whilst the friends I travelled with went in to explore the fort. They said it was great, but they were only inside for about 20 minutes, so I felt pretty fine with my decision to save money. 

Plus, it gave me way more time to snap photos of Hvar!

Hvar Old Town

Wandering back to town from the fortress, take your time and explore the quaint streets on your way down to Old Town Hvar.

Start your walking tour of Hvar back near the harbour, at the Venetian Loggia and Clock Tower. Here, you’ll marvel at these dazzling white buildings with the Tvrdava Fortress in the background! 

Then, wander in the direction of St Stephen’s Square, stopping every so often to gawp at just how gorgeous everything is, because you won’t be able to help yourself!

The buildings around here are to-die-for. Everything looks straight out of a holiday brochure – whitewashed buildings, clear blue skies and ancient cobblestoned streets. This is what we travel to Croatia for!

At the end of the square, you’ll find the Hvar Cathedral . It looks much more impressive outside than inside, so enjoy the view of its 17th-century bell tower outside for free.

Lunch at Hanibal

Right outside Hvar Cathedral you’ll find the outdoor seating of Hanibal restaurant. I ate here twice during my time in Hvar and was very impressed both times! They pride themselves on using fresh ingredients and you can really tell. 

On the first day, I ordered a veggie pizza which was so fresh and light that I just couldn’t stop eating! On my second visit to Hvar I ordered their Greek salad. It was absolutely delicious, and just what I needed on such a hot day.

The prices are unfortunately not on their online menu, and I can’t for the life of me remember what I paid, but I know that it wasn’t too expensive. 

Sitting outside in the shade of the restaurant’s parasols, this is a great place to hide out during the hottest part of the day, watch the world go by and perhaps sample some Croatian wine.

Chilling at Pokonji Dol Beach

Strolling along the waterfront past the port, a 25-minute walk (which is lovely all by itself) will lead you to the deep-blue water and pebbled shore of Pokonji Dol Beach. This is probably the best beach within walking distance from Hvar Town. 

Did you know Croatia’s beaches are pebble, not sand? At first, I was slightly disappointed, because it meant I had to fork out for a sun lounger for the afternoon, but this turned out to be one of my most pleasant surprises!

Lying on the fancy sun lounger by the water’s edge felt so luxurious, and I couldn’t help feeling like a celebrity, living a life of luxury.

Since I was suffering so much from the heat, I decided be extravagant and hire an umbrella too. You really should do this! I can’t imagine how burnt and dehydrated I would’ve been if I hadn’t had the shade from my umbrella. It was worth every penny. 

Hiring a sunbed will set you back between €10-€13 for the day, and an umbrella will cost a little bit extra. Yeah, it’s not cheap, but let’s not forget that this is the Croatian island of the rich and famous!

The water here is so delicious and refreshing! Every half-hour or so I took a dip to cool off, and I just couldn’t get over how blue the water was! It looked like blue dye had been put in it, it was so vibrant!

Fancy something more active? Sure thing – the gorgeous Pakleni Islands are just a stone’s throw away. Join a Pakleni Islands Sailing Tour for the afternoon, or for even more activity, an Afternoon Kayaking Tour of the islands.

Hula Hula Beach Bar!

After you’ve chilled at the beach, it’s time to see what Hvar’s hip beach bar scene has to offer. You’ll struggle to find a more kick-ass location for a bar than Hula Hula!

Situated right on the oceanfront, Hula Hula is full of young travellers kicking back with a few drinks. You can come here at any time of day (they have huge sunbeds to sip your drinks on), and can kind of treat it as an extension of the beach, but with funky music and a bar nearby!

If you’re a fan of watching the sunset over the ocean (who isn’t?) you really have to stay here until the sun sets. The views are epic!

A word of warning about Hula Hula – it’s SO expensive for Croatia. And the service isn’t great. 

Why do I recommend it, then? 

Well, its location is amazing and the set up is so fun and cool. The other guests are all good fun, the music is great, and the food is just *chefs kiss*. You HAVE to order the Pljukanci (Croatian pasta) with truffles!

Good lord, that meal was delicious. 

It cost me a whopping €14.50 but, to my surprise, it was absolutely worth the splurge! Just keep in mind that the drinks are not cheap at all (especially for Croatia). At €6 for their cheapest bottle of beer I was glad we didn’t spend too long there.

After your meal and a drink or two it’ll probably be getting dark. Now is the perfect time to head back to the port to catch the ferry back to Split, and round off your Split to Hvar day trip.

On the ferry back try to get a seat in the indoor area as it’ll be chilly on the open deck. The ferry ride home is the perfect time to have a nap.

What to Pack on a Day Trip to Hvar from Split

Luckily, I’ve already written a comprehensive list of everything to bring to Croatia . Out of these items, there isn’t anything extra you’ll need to bring on your day trip to Hvar from Split. There are a few things you should pack to make your life easier, though.

Firstly, a portable charger is a necessity, since you’ll want to take so many photos.  I have one  like this , which holds about 7 phone recharges, recharges fast, and is surprisingly durable! In addition to this I pack a smaller one  like this for quick recharges on the go.

Hvar’s beaches pebble beaches, making walking around without shoes quite painful! For this reason, I recommend stashing a pair of  water shoes  in your bag.

A quick-dry towel like  this one is ideal for taking to the beach because it packs into a tiny ball and dries very fast. There’s nothing worse than a heavy, soggy towel in your bag!

Finally, pack a waterproof phone lanyard if you want to go into the ocean but are scared about leaving your stuff on the beach. The small, see-through case has enough space to hold your phone, money and keys, and clips so that it’s totally waterproof! I also love that the case is see through, so you can take selfies and videos underwater!

How Much Does a Day Trip to Hvar Cost?

If you’re following this itinerary and getting the ferry, €65 would be a good amount to budget for your day trip to Hvar from Split. This would be enough to cover your ferry tickets, a delicious lunch and dinner with a few drinks, and renting a sun lounger and umbrella.

If you brought your own packed lunch and dinner from Split and decide to sit on the pebbles on the beach rather than hiring a sun lounger, you could easily spend just €30 for your one day in Hvar. For this reason, it’s totally possible to visit Hvar on a budget.

Want to Extend Your Hvar Day Trip from Split?

If you have time to spend longer than one day in Hvar I really recommend staying overnight in Hvar Town! This was one of the biggest regrets from my Croatia trip as I’ve heard its nightlife is incredible.

For budget backpackers, I’ve heard great things about Hostel Villa Skansi (and its reviews speak for themselves!). Not only is it right in the centre of Hvar town, but they put a huge emphasis on being sociable, and run LOADS of events to get you mingling with your fellow travellers.

If you’re not travelling on a tight budget you can’t go wrong staying at Pharos Hvar Hotel . At €175 per night (for a double room) it’s definitely not cheap – but nowhere on Hvar is! What sweetens the deal is that an excellent breakfast is included in this rate and you’ll have access to their pool, which will save you from paying to hire sunbeds on the beach.

Other Places to Visit on Hvar

If you’re staying in Hvar for a second day you should get a taxi over to Stari Grad. This journey should cost you around €30 .

Stari Grad is another tourist hotspot on Hvar island with a quieter and more traditional vibe. Plus, it has direct ferry links with Split, so you can just catch the ferry from Stari Grad back to Split when you’re ready to leave Hvar and return to the mainland.

Did I convince you to take a day trip from Split to Hvar yet? I sure hope so! My time in Hvar was wonderful, and it left me wishing I had a couple of months to do some in-depth island hopping in Croatia. There are a tonne of day trip options from Split , but Hvar is one of my favourites.

The Perfect Day Trip Hvar Island from Split, Croatia

We weren’t originally planning on spending one day in Hvar during our recent trip to Croatia for 8 days. However, due to the weather, our tour from Split was canceled so we had to shift and decide the day before to book a ferry and explore the island of Hvar. 

You can even choose to stay on Hvar for a day or two as a part of your Croatia travels, but by exploring Hvar in one day you can experience much of what the island has to offer! Let’s review all about Hvar and what to do on a day trip to the Croatian island of Hvar.

About Hvar Island

The island of Hvar is located adjacent to Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast within the Adriatic Sea. Many other islands are in the vicinity such as Brac, Vis, and Bisevo. 

Hvar has a reputation for being an island that parties. Stari Grad (on Hvar island) is a more chill area of the island in comparison to Hvar City. Hvar City is the area you will first arrive in once coming over via ferry.

The area of Hvar City is very walkable. If you want to get to other parts of the island there are buses available. There are many tours that will drive you around the island in small vans, more about our favorite tour in a bit!

Unlike other cities in Croatia, Hvar doesn’t have an old town area per se. But, there are many architectural structures on the island that are historic.

Hvar is most well known for its lavender fields across the island. Typically they are at peak bloom in June or July. If you’re visiting then, carve out some time to experience them. But first things first, how are you getting to Hvar for a day trip?

How to get to Hvar from Split

Since Hvar is an island you will get there either via ferry or boat. If you have a rental car on mainland Croatia, you can also take a ferry that allows cars to come over. If you’re planning on doing that, be sure to book your ferry in advance (especially during the summer months!) But ultimately you will arrive on Hvar island via water in some capacity.

The most common way to travel to the island of Hvar is by ferry. Ferry schedules and cost will vary throughout the year. Be sure to check the times and number of ferries when you plan on traveling. For example, during high season (the summer months) there are 10 high-speed ferries daily in comparison to off-season in the winter where there are only two daily ferries. 

Your scheduled ferry times will structure your day on the island of Hvar.

Ferry Prices

The price for a passenger on a ferry from Split to Hvar varies. It depends on availability when you book, and also what ferry company it’s through. Some ferries are faster than others and the high-speed ferries will be more expensive for convenience. 

In general, the ferry costs about 6 Euros to 20 Euros per journey. So, if you’re going there and back it can be around 40 Euros for the entire trip per person. 

Ferry Tickets

But where do you buy ferry tickets? You can purchase them directly from the port area there are booths selling tickets. During the summer months it’s best to have your ferry booked at least 24 hours in advance.

You can also book online on Ferry Croatia. 

Another really great option is using Omio . You can compare all modes of transportation (not applicable for Split to Hvar but for other travel plans it’s really helpful!) using this tool.

How long is the ferry from Split to Hvar?

The ferry from Split is approximately one hour while you can arrive via ferry from Dubrovnik as well, it’s a bit longer of a journey at 4 hours.

If you don’t want to travel to and from Hvar via ferry, another option is taking a full day tour on a boat. (Insert sigh here) this was our original plan. There are so many boat tours leaving from Split that include many different islands, some visit the Blue Cave, the famous Blue Lagoon, Pakleni islands, and make a stop to explore Hvar as well.

In hindsight, we wouldn’t have done the amazing wine tour had we only had a limited amount of time on Hvar. 

However, if you want to fit in just a sampling of all that Hvar has to offer as well as the inclusion of other Croatian islands near Split, a day tour is a great option!

Hvar one day Itinerary

Here is a possible itinerary for a day trip to Hvar:

• 9:00 am – Depart from Split on a ferry to Hvar. The ferry ride takes about 1 hour.
• 10:00 am – Arrive in Hvar Town and explore the city. Head up to the fortress to take in the views. Afterward stroll around the shops, restaurants, and cafes.
• 12:00 pm – Have lunch at one of the many restaurants in Hvar Town. The food on Hvar is delicious!
• 1:00 pm – Take a swim in the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Sea. There are many beaches to choose from on Hvar.
• 3:00 pm – After swimming, dry off and gear up for an afternoon winery tour. (More about this later!)
• 7:00 pm – Take a ferry back to Split. The ferry ride takes about 1 hour.

This is just a suggested itinerary. You can customize it to fit your interests and time constraints. Hvar is a beautiful island with something to offer everyone, so you’re sure to have a great time no matter what you do! 

If you’d rather not plan your day on Hvar, a day tour is a great option for you! There are many different options that vary in length, stops, and price.

Day tours from Split to Hvar

If you’d like the day planned for you, there are several Hvar day tours starting in Split that will bring you to Hvar to explore. When reviewing what day tours be sure to pay close attention to the specific places on the itineraries as they are vastly different. A boat tour is one of the most popular tours. 

If there are specific must-do items for you, you’ll want to ensure it’s included in the tour. 

When we visited Hvar in early May, some restaurants and bars hadn’t opened yet. The high season or the busy tourist season is from June to August when almost all of the restaurants are open. 

When chatting with locals, they said that many restaurants and businesses that cater to hospitality and the busy tourist season will take a break prior to the busy season and sometimes after it has concluded. 

There were still plenty of places that were open in early May, but just a heads up that this could happen. 

You will need to plan ahead during these months as Hvar gets really busy both for hotel reservations and ferries coming over from Split.

Split to Hvar day trip: Best things to do in Hvar

You will arrive in the harbor area of Hvar. There are many restaurants and places to walk around in this area. It’s a great place for a stroll. If you’re up for a little less of a leisurely walk, head up to the fortress for some stunning views!

Tvrdava Fortress (Fortica)

Also known as Hvar Spanish Fortress looks out over Hvar city and the marina. This medieval castle was built in the 16th century and sits on top of the hill in Hvar. The impressive structure offers sweeping views of the island and out over the Adriatic Sea. 

Getting to the fortress is quite easy. To the left of Kroz Grodu street, there is a long stairway leading upward. If you climb the stairway (which is picturesque in itself and worth the effort) you’ll reach the entrance to the fortress path.

Follow the fortress path all the way up and soak in the views. You can visit the fortress itself which is filled with exhibits and antiquities from the middle ages. While touring the fortress, aside from the architecture and the historic significance you will be rewarded with stunning views.

Explore streets

The streets of Hvar city are very picturesque. Just strolling around the winding streets is a delight, with the tall stone buildings and red-tiled roofs creating a charming atmosphere.

Walk through Hvar Square otherwise known as Hvarska Pjaca (or Square of St. Stephen). All streets in Hvar lead to this square and it is the center of the cities social life. It is flanked by the cathedral. 

Have lunch or dinner

There are many amazing places to have a meal on Hvar Island. From the traditional taverns serving local specialties to the fine dining restaurants with stunning views, there is something to suit every taste and budget. 

We ate at Dine & Wine Mediterraneo and would 100% have a meal there again. In addition to Dine & Wine Mediterraneo some other restaurants to enjoy a meal or drinks on the island include:

Everything about this restaurant is perfection! From the food, to the ambiance and wine list it’s the perfect spot for lunch or dinner while in Hvar.

Val Marina Restaurant

Conveniently located on the promenade Val Marina provides something for everyone no matter what time of day it is. From breakfast, dinner to happy hour drinks in between this is a great spot to go.

Fresh seafood and a woodfire oven with many fresh dishes to choose from. This restaurant earned the award of the top rated restaurant in 2021. 

Vintage Bar Hvar

A lovely wine bar with shareable charcuterie board style platters, an extensive wine list and curated craft cocktails. The perfect spot on Hvar for great sips and snacks!

Vunetovo Craft Beer

A small capacity brewery that focuses on offering both their own brews and other Croatian craft beer. All beers are offered on tap (or draft) and also offering local snacks to enjoy alongside your pint.

No matter what your taste or budget, you are sure to find a great place to eat (or have drinks) on Hvar Island.

• Milna : This is a small town on the south side of Hvar that has a number of beautiful beaches, including Stipanska Bay and Dubovica Bay.
• Stari Grad : This is a historic town on the north side of Hvar that has a number of beautiful beaches and beach clubs, including Hula Hula Beach and Pokonji Dol Beach.

Another way to hop from beach to beach or explore the coastline of Croatia is by booking an Uber boat. It’s exactly like you’re using Uber to get a car from place to place, except it’s a boat! By doing so you could even visit nearby islands! But for just a day trip to Hvar, it would be a fun experience!

However, be advised this isn’t the most cost-effective way to get out on the water, you’re more likely to have a more enjoyable experience if you booked a day tour from Split including stops on Hvar and other islands.

Lavender fields

The lavender fields on Hvar are a sight to behold in the summer, when they are in full bloom. The best time to see them is in July or August, when the lavender is at its peak. The fields are located about 10 km (over 6 miles) from Hvar town, and the best way to see them is to take a bike ride or hike along the lavender trail. 

The trail starts in Velo Grablje, a small village on Hvar, and winds its way through the lavender fields. It is a beautiful and peaceful place to walk or bike, and the views of the lavender fields are stunning. 

The lavender fields are also a popular spot for photography, and many people come to Hvar each year to take pictures of the fields in bloom. If you are looking for a beautiful and unique place to visit in Croatia, the lavender fields on Hvar are definitely worth a visit.

Hvar wine tour half day

Before arriving in Croatia, I had read a bit online about the Secret Hvar tours , more specifically the wine tour on the island of Hvar. I didn’t think we’d have the time to fit it in (not on this 8 day Croatia trip anyway!) so we hadn’t planned to do a wine tour.

After our plans were cancelled one day and we decided to take a ferry over to Hvar and stopped into the visitor/tourist information center asking about Hvar wine tours or wineries and the lady working there mentioned the owner Sinisa, a lightbulb went off in my head as I remembered what I had previously seen about this tour online.

Let me tell you, it far exceeded my expectations! We were a little hesitant at first because of the cost but it was SOOO SOOO worth it! We ended up meeting him at the bus station where he drove us to two different wineries. As a local that has always inhabited the island just chatting with him was lovely.

We visited the boutique winery Pavicic and Plancic . They are among some of the best wineries on Hvar.

It was such an intimate and fun experience tasting all of the wines and truly getting to talk with the owners and learn a little more about Croatian wine. It was the highlight of our one day trip to Hvar.

One of our favorite wines at Plancic, Mario informed us that they are one of the last wineries to make the type of wine (Darnekusa). There are only two wineries currently on Hvar producing this delicious wine! 

It felt like it was just meant to be, as the winery was established the year both my husband and I were born and the Darnekusa wine vintage was the year we got married.

Do i need to book a ferry from split to hvar in advance.

It’s not always necessary to pre-book your ferry. If you’re visiting during peak season and you have a specific ferry time you want to be on due to your plans, booking your ferry earlier rather than later is smart so it doesn’t affect your plans. In early May we booked our ferry the evening before an early AM ferry time. 

Can you fly to Hvar, Croatia?

No, there isn’t an airport on the island of Hvar, Croatia. The closest airport is located on the island of Brac (BWK). But, you’ll still need to get to Hvar from Brac via boat or ferry once flying there. Another option is to fly to Split and take the ferry from Split to Hvar Island. 

Does Hvar, Croatia have good nightlife?

Yes, Hvar is sometimes referred to as the “party island” because of the nightlife scene that can be found here. Despite its reputation Hvar isn’t just clubs or beach bars with many historic sites and beautiful landscape to explore. But if nightlife is what you’re looking for in a holiday you definitely can find it on Hvar!

Is Hvar worth visiting?

Yes, Hvar is definitely worth visiting even for a short time on day trips from Split or Dubrovnik. Hvar is a popular tourist destination in Croatia, known for its beautiful beaches, clear waters, and historic towns. Split is the second largest city in Croatia and a popular starting point for exploring the Dalmatian coast.

What is the Split to Hvar distance?

The distance from Split to Hvar (and vice versa) via the ferry is 55 km (or just over 34 miles.) When looking at a map it looks much closer but traveling there and back really doesn’t take long. The ferry journey can take from 45 minutes to an hour in length.

Do you need a car on Hvar Island?

No. It’s easy to get around the island with or without a car. The local bus connects the larger towns on the island. Once you arrive via ferry the bus station is a short walk. Having a car gives you more flexibility. But parking can be difficult to find in some areas, especially during the peak season.

As you’re planning on spending time on Hvar island, here are some additional tips for your day trip to Hvar:

• Wear comfortable shoes, as you will be doing a lot of walking.
• Bring sunscreen, as the sun can be very strong on Hvar Island
• Pack a swimsuit and towel, especially if you will want to spend time at the beach.
• Don’t forget your camera, as you will want to capture all the amazing views!
• Hvar is a popular tourist destination, so be prepared for crowds. (Especially in June-August!)
• The best time to visit Hvar is during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall) when the weather is still warm but the crowds are smaller.

If you’re spending time in Split (more than just one day) you definitely should spend some time on Hvar and the nearby islands. Taking a day trip to Hvar will be a highlight of your trip. Hvar has so much to offer from great food, to swimming, sunbathing, hiking, and exploring the many historical sites. 

Plus there are so many local wineries you’re sure to find something to spend a fantastic day or partial day trip to Hvar worth your time while in Croatia.

Simple and efficient booking process with Happy To Visit. Quick confirmation and good customer service. Reminder message the night before confirming pick up time and place was a nice touch. Early start but well worth it, what a fabulous day out. Mayer Charter Hosts were welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. Beautiful islands with plenty of time to explore, swim or eat. Blue Cave unfortunately closed due to tide levels (Mother Nature for you!) but guides adjusted times elsewhere to make the most of our day. Bit disappointed in Green Caves (for the cost) but if this goes toward conservation and protection of the gorgeous clean waters then money well spent. Hvar on the other hand was stunning, and the hike up to the castle is well worth the views from the top. The open water ride out and back was extremely rough due to the wind & waves, but handled expertly by Anthony. Felt completely at ease and safe in his hands. Top tip for the ladies though, wear a sports bra..,a bikini just doesn’t cut-it bumping over the waves!! 🤣 A fun filled day trip which I’d highly recommend, thank you Mayer Charter and Happy to Visit 💯👍

It was a lovely trip, we had the chance to visit the places without much crowd given that the previous day it rained. The guides were very kind and showed us a lot of exciting places. They made a pre-reservation to a restaurant in case you wanted to have lunch there. We did not know about this and for this reason, we prepared our own lunch. It would have been great if we had known this beforehand given that the restaurant looked really nice. They give you enough time to visit and take pictures of every destination. They also help you all the time to get in and out of the boat. The trip was at some times a bit abrupt because there were big waves. This was a bit scary sometimes. But the guides knew how to minimize the impact and we felt safe almost all the time.

Nice Crew and fantastic journey

This was really good fun trip and the boat ride out was great fun. Our guides (I'm sure the lad said his nickname was Milky?! 🤣) made the day interesting and my wife loved seeing where mama Mia was filmed! If I'm honest, I thought the blue cave itself was a huge disappointment and doesn't live up at all to the hype but there's nothing you guys can do about that and I'd give the crew & the trip 5 stars for making it a fun day and it's worth it for the speed boat ride alone
