Everything You Need to Know About PGA Tour 2K23's Different Modes

PGA Tour 2K23 brings simulation golf to gamers everywhere with a lot of modes that give online golfers different ways to play the game.

PGA Tour 2K23 is bringing simulation golf to next-gen consoles, and Tiger Woods is making his return to golf video games as the cover athlete for the latest installment of HB Studios' franchise. Woods isn't the only big addition to the game, however, as PGA Tour 2K23 has added new modes and made some tweaks to others that give the new game a different feel and look than previous games.

The opportunity to live the life of a professional golfer and play through the PGA season is always alluring to golf fans, and PGA Tour 2K23 delivers, with many of the iconic stops on the tour included in the game. With 20 licensed courses included in PGA Tour 2K23 at launch, gamers will be able to play at destinations like TPS Scottsdale, TPC Sawgrass, and Bay Hill, with more courses like Pebble Beach coming in free post-launch DLC.

Compete on the PGA Tour

PGA Tour 2K23 will have the MyCareer mode as its centerpiece once again in this iteration, as gamers will create their player and hit the links to compete on the tour and try to win the FedEx Cup at the end of the season. Players can start in either the Korn Ferry Tour to try and qualify for the PGA Tour, or jump right to the PGA Tour to begin, but achievement and trophy hunters should be aware that there's a reward for qualifying from the Korn Ferry Tour.

Once on the PGA Tour, players will compete in many of the events from the actual tour, on the true-to-life courses those tournaments take place on during the season. Gamers won't find The Masters or Augusta National in PGA Tour 2K23 , but they will be able to play in the Waste Management Open, The PLAYERS Championship, and FedEx Cup Playoff events on their home courses, as well as many of the other events on the tour.

Everything New in PGA Tour 2K23

The popular golf experience Topgolf is also making its way to video games for the first time in PGA Tour 2K23 with its flagship Las Vegas location as the venue in the game. Topgolf is an arcade-style mode where players alternate shots and racking up as many points as they can, with more points being awarded for closeness to the target and for how far away the target is. Topgolf can be played solo or against up to three other players online.

Every new sports game introduces new pros in the sport, and Tiger Woods isn't the only famous athlete appearing in PGA Tour 2K23 . Alongside the 14 PGA and LPGA professionals appearing in the game, two basketball legends are also making the jump from NBA 2K23 to PGA Tour 2K23 , as Michael Jordan and Stephen Curry are both playable pros in the game. Michael Jordan is a pre-order bonus for fans who get the game early, and Curry will be DLC after launch.

Online Multiplayer

PGA Tour 2K23 looks to build on a somewhat disappointing multiplayer suite in PGA Tour 2K21 with what is hopefully a greater focus on the online part of the game. Match Play and Stroke Play are both returning in this year's game, and they are the cornerstones of the online multiplayer experience. In Match Play, each hole is won by the player with the best score on that hole, and whoever wins the most holes by the end of the round wins the match. In Stroke Play, a running total of shots is kept across all nine holes, with the player with the lowest amount being the winner.

PGA Tour 2K21 featured the opportunity to play online with a friend in team play, and that looks to be returning to PGA Tour 2K23 . To keep the player pool from splitting too much, team play functions on a rotating basis, with each new day featuring either Best Ball, Four Ball, or Alternate Shot. Whichever one is featured that day is the only team mode players can play that day, as there is no way to select any of the others until they return to the rotation again.

Multiplayer in PGA Tour 2K23 also features Divot Derby, a fun and chaotic mode where up to 20 players compete at the same time in a race to the finish. Players shoot simultaneously, with other players' shots appearing on-screen as different colored lines, and the winner is the first player to hole out on the 9th hole.

Join Or Create An Online Society

Think of PGA Tour 2K23 Online Societies as a club that a player can join and take part in, with various events and competitions to keep them for the season. Online Societies are a feature that has carried over from the days when the franchise was known as The Golf Club , and are about as close as players will get to seeing online leaderboards in PGA Tour 2K23 .

Within Online Societies, players can find full schedules of competitive events to take part in and compete against everyone else in the society, seeing how they stack up against the competition. Not every PGA Tour 2K23 Online Society is the same, some are run a lot better than others, and it's important to think about the level of commitment when selecting one to take part in, as some will require daily interaction while others are designed for the more casual fan.

Course Creator Returns

For the players that have a strong creative sense and enjoy building maps in Halo 's Forge or huge structures in Minecraft , PGA Tour 2K23 's Course Creator gives players the opportunity to build courses from scratch. HB Studios creates a handful of fantasy courses using it as well, which adds to the total number of courses available for players.

The biggest benefit of Course Creator is that courses can be shared and downloaded by the community, allowing all gamers the opportunity to play on others' creations. These courses typically range from utterly obnoxious to the hardest courses in PGA Tour 2K23 , in a very good way, and add a lot more life to the game while keeping it from getting mundane.

PGA Tour 2K23 is scheduled to release on October 14 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Thrilling golf marred by frustrating swinging mechanics and career progression

I don’t spend much time playing video games whose difficulty is a selling point; if it’s anything like a Soulslike, I’m likely to avoid it. So it’s been a long time since a game has made me swear as much as PGA Tour 2K23 has. I’m not proud that one of those instances occurred when my wife came downstairs to see how things were going, just as I shanked a tee shot — for perhaps the 50th time? I’ve lost count at this point — into a thicket of trees on the left side of the fairway.

From wayward drives that end up in the drink to gimme putts that somehow don’t drop, the analog stick swing mechanic is my greatest frustration in PGA Tour 2K23 . After all, swinging is the main thing you do in this game; it takes 60 to 80 shots, on average, to complete a full 18-hole round.

But after taking thousands of swings across hundreds of holes of golf, I still don’t feel like I have a great handle on my virtual clubs in PGA Tour 2K23 . In other words, I don’t feel like I’m improving — an issue that is compounded because I’m also not getting a meaningful sense of progression for my created golfer in the game’s MyCareer mode.

PGA Tour 2K23 defaults to a control scheme that’s common in golf video games: To swing, you pull down on the right stick and then flick it upward. Here, though, the timing of the second motion (the downswing) is crucial — you’ll pull the shot to the left if you flick too quickly, and push it to the right if you’re too slow.

Downswing timing is the bane of my existence. I’ve enabled many of the assists available in the game’s settings, and have been hoping I’d eventually be able to wrap my head around the swing system. But even on the second-easiest difficulty setting, swinging feels like something of a crapshoot. No matter how many practice cuts I take, I’m liable to hook a shot when I swing for real.

There’s another option now: Fulfilling a long-standing request, developer HB Studios has added a traditional three-click system in PGA Tour 2K23 . It’s much less analogous to a real-life golf swing than, well, the analog stick scheme, but it’s good that an alternative is available.

This is HB Studios’ second effort under 2K Sports, a mass-market publisher. As such, I’m surprised that PGA Tour 2K23 doesn’t feel substantively more accessible than its predecessor, 2020’s PGA Tour 2K21 . Even the three-click swinging is implemented in a way that feels like it’s different for the sake of being different. Rather than simply pressing the button three times, you first hold it down to determine power, and then tap it twice to fine-tune the accuracy. I tried this system and quickly reverted to analog controls, despite my issues with them.

PGA Tour 2K23 ’s MyCareer mode also ends up feeling overcomplicated, although its foundation is solid. When creating your MyPlayer character, you choose one of five archetypes. For instance, Powerhouse players can drive the ball farther than anyone else, but they struggle with accuracy and putting. I’ve stuck with Woodsman because, frankly, I miss so many fairways and greens that I need all the help I can get when recovering from a bad lie in the rough. It’s nice that I can change my archetype if I ever want to, at no cost.

Here, HB Studios’ design works beautifully: The archetypes are meant to offer packages of strengths and weaknesses to support and complement your personal play style. My shots may often land on pine straw or in a fairway bunker, but thanks to the Woodsman archetype and its shot-shaping benefits, I don’t feel like all is lost when they do — and in fact, I’ve managed to save par in many of those cases.

The same customization-based design philosophy applies throughout MyCareer, but it’s less successful outside the realm of archetypes. The experience points you earn by playing tournaments aren’t used to directly upgrade your player’s attributes, like in a typical role-playing game (or in, say, a standard career mode in a sports game). Instead, you get a single skill point every time you level up, and you use the points to unlock and upgrade skills.

To avoid getting too far into the weeds (or woods) here, I’ll just say that almost all of the skills take effect only on a situational basis: They’ll either activate when you’re struggling and deactivate once you regain your form, or activate when you’re doing well and deactivate if you don’t keep it up. And as you level up a skill, it activates more easily and stays active for longer.

a Black woman wearing a pink polo and black slacks watches her tee shot fly in PGA Tour 2K23

While the concept is sound, this setup makes the entire skill system feel inert. The first skill for hybrid clubs, Gusto, seems eminently valuable: When you’re mired in heavy rough, your shots will fly farther. But at level 1 of the skill, it only takes effect if you happen to be hitting into a headwind of at least 15 mph — an exceedingly rare combination of circumstances, in my experience. Because it takes a while to earn skill points, I’m not inclined to waste my precious few points on a skill that I don’t expect to get much use out of, even if there are more desirable ones locked farther along that branch of the tree.

Personalization is also the driving force behind club fittings, the most significant (and concrete) method of improving your performance in PGA Tour 2K23 . Fittings are parts of a golf club — head, shaft, or grip — that you can equip to magnify its attributes. Each one has a level of rarity attached to it, as with loot in a game like Destiny 2 ; the more rare it is, the stronger its effects. Attaching an “uncommon” head to a wedge might boost its power rating by 6 points while also dropping its timing attribute by 2.

Unlike in PGA Tour 2K23 ’s basketball sibling, NBA 2K, you can’t spend real-world money to power up your athlete, thankfully — at least not by buying fittings, since you receive them only as random drops. Virtual Currency, 2K Sports’ real-money currency (called “coins” here), is used primarily to purchase items like licensed clothes and gear from companies such as Adidas and Mizuno, none of which affect gameplay.

However, a pay-to-win element does creep into the game with respect to fittings: It costs coins to equip them to each club. The charge for attaching a legendary shaft to an iron is 150 coins, so I had to spend 900 coins to outfit all six of the irons in my bag. Considering the slow rate at which you earn coins through play — something like 250 coins if you can manage to finish in one of the top spots of a tournament — you may end up staring longingly at a collection of fittings that you’ve unlocked but can’t afford to equip.

Steph Curry, wearing a multicolored polo and a black baseball cap, watches a tee shot fly in PGA Tour 2K23

The real bummer here is that I’ve had to spend so many words analyzing all that ancillary stuff, because once I’m playing a hole in PGA Tour 2K23 , most of those nuisances fade away. This is a true-playing golf game — I had a devil of a time with the steep greens at Los Angeles’ Riviera Country Club, and I’ve found it tremendously satisfying to craft and execute shots . The unforgiving difficulty of the swing mechanics, coupled with the game’s complicated system of fittings and skills, can lead to more frustration than fun. But when it all comes together, and I manage to pull out a birdie just when I need one to hold off a challenger on the leaderboard, it makes for thrilling moments of fist-pumping glory.

Perhaps I’m just too much of a casual gamer for the PGA Tour 2K series. To wit: I played many hours of PGA Tour 2K21 and didn’t remember having trouble with its swing mechanics — but when I booted up that game to check the options, I realized that I had disabled the downswing timing setting. At some point, I must’ve gotten frustrated enough to give up on the challenge (and the associated boost to the rate at which you earn XP). I’d also love to be able to save-scum, but that’s not an option: Due to the integration of VC, this is an always-online game by default, so it saves your progress with each stroke, with no allowances for mulligans.

It seems like my best bet — if I want to more fully enjoy my time with PGA Tour 2K23 — would be to turn off downswing timing. Either that, or it might be time to put this franchise on my personal “I don’t need this stress in my life” list, right next to Elden Ring .

EA SPORTS™ PGA TOUR™ Career Mode Deep Dive

Ea sports pga tour launches april 7th with an in-depth career mode. read on to learn more.

From gameplay to courses we’ve taken you through some of what EA SPORTS™ PGA TOUR™ will offer at launch, and now, read on to learn all about Career Mode, our most in-depth career mode in the EA SPORTS PGA TOUR series yet. Read on to learn more about Career Mode and watch the deep dive below.

From becoming a major champion to earning a grand slam title, to even winning the FedExCup and more, you’ll be able to experience what it is like to compete each week in golf’s biggest events with Career Mode.

Career Mode Journey Overview from Amateur to the Masters

You’ll start your journey by customizing your golfer’s appearance with a variety of visual customizations, equipment options, and swing styles to choose from. You can control your golfer’s swing style by selecting their swing animation, swing tempo, preferred shot shape, and ball trajectory throughout your career. You’ll also be able to customize your club head, shaft, grips, and more so you’ll perform just like you want to on the course. And to make sure you’re looking your best when you’re on the course, you’ll be able to equip yourself with accessories and clothing from a variety of iconic and new-age golf brands.

After you’ve perfected your look on-course, you’ll be able to control where you want to start your career - as an amateur in one of the top amateur events, on the Korn Ferry Tour, or the PGA TOUR. As an amateur you’ll be able to play in the U.S. Amateur Championship, Augusta National Women’s Amateur, The Amateur Championship, Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, and Latin American Amateur Championship, culminating in Q-school where you’ll compete for a spot on the Korn Ferry Tour. After you’ve conquered the amateur championships  you’ll have the opportunity to earn an invitation to the Masters and U.S. Open.

After the Korn Ferry Tour, or if you choose to skip straight to it, you’ll launch into the PGA TOUR where you will get to compete each week on golf’s biggest stages including the major championships, where you can chase  your green jacket, a Grand Slam Title, race for the FedExCup, and more.

Throughout the season, each tournament has field sizes and entry requirements and that mirror its real life counterpart. So if you want to compete in golf’s biggest events, you’ll need to earn your spot just like the pros do.

During Career Mode gameplay, you can use the “AI Pairings” setting to play shot-for-shot against an AI PGA TOUR pro, or turn it off to speed up the round and concentrate solely on your game.

The AI performance is based on official ShotLink data, so pros play each course and particular hole just like they would in real life.

Skill Progression and Shot Types

EA SPORTS PGA TOUR Career Mode uses an RPG style of progression where you’ll be able to build your golfer’s skill set over time as you put in playing hours. You can earn XP and skill points in the categories of power, driving, approach, short game and putting where you’ll be able to unlock new shot types and upgrade them from bronze to silver to gold and more.

With upgraded shot types you’ll have more strategic options on the course so you can succeed at more difficult courses.

You’ll be able to see your upgrades in your home base, The Season Hub where you’ll be able to view the entire calendar of events and track your career progression and other milestones through the “Career Mastery” tab.

In your Season Hub you’ll also be able to see your completed and available quests - sets of challenges categorized under either a course or a tournament. Completed quests will contribute to developing your skills and unlocking new shot types.

By completing different challenges you’ll also be able to earn ball and club specs which offer customizable performance characteristics across the areas of power, accuracy, control, and recovery. You can create a loadout that you prefer and then equip that club and ball spec into your bag.

You can also purchase PGA TOUR club specs from the store to equip clubs just like your favorite pros do.

Your golfer will have a variety of attributes that you’ll be able to influence by completing quests. They are detailed below. Utilizing skill points for each of the five skill categories not only unlocks new shot types, but also allows you to upgrade your golfer's attributes

  • Power influences your swing speed which determines the distance all of your shot go.
  • With higher accuracy comes a shot dispersion area and a smaller mishit window size. Your swing execution will also be more accurate.
  • With higher control attributes, your shot will have more natural spin and you’ll be able to shape your shot more as well as add more spin while your shot is in the air. The higher your control the more accurately you’ll be able to influence these parts of your play.
  • Carry distance penalty
  • The size of the range shown in the carry distance penalty window
  • Natural spin penalty
  • Shot shaping penalty
  • Spin control penalty
  • Mishit tolerance window penalty
  • Penalty for off-plane swings and mishits

PGA TOUR 2K23

MATCH TYPES

One of the most popular aspects of the PGA TOUR 2K series has been the diversity of matches and modes available. Whether it’s the fun of camaraderie and going toe-to-toe with friends at home in multiplayer mode, the unrivaled global interaction of entering matches and tournaments online, or the personal satisfaction of conquering the PGA TOUR in MyCAREER mode, PGA TOUR 2K has been long renowned for the diverse game modes it provides to virtual golf enthusiasts around the world.

Our latest release is no exception, with PGA TOUR 2K23 providing the richest selection of matches and modes yet. This year, we’ve enhanced the features of some of the most acclaimed modes from previous releases while adding some brand-new menus to further enhance the competitive thrill.

With so many different areas of the game to enjoy, we’ve put together this guide to provide insight into the different types of gameplay on offer.

LOCAL MATCH

Despite the plethora of interactive gameplay options in the modern day, the thrill of spending an evening competing with friends or family at home remains as popular as ever.

Our Local Match mode caters to this demand by allowing you to play with up to three other guests at home. Players with limited controls are not restricted, as local mode allows you to choose to share one controller between you if necessary.

This pass-and-play game style does not require an online connection and is the perfect way to bring all the golfing action to the comfort of your living room. If you  do  have an online connection, however, you can access a wide world of user-created courses made by members of the Course Design community! For those home alone, our Local Match mode can still be enjoyed and experienced in single-player mode.

PRIVATE MATCH

As the name suggests, our Private Match mode allows you to play online with selected players you choose to play with, and experiment with different rules, settings, and courses. This is perfect for times when you want to play directly against friends but are not in the same household.

The in-game party allows you to select party members that you have invited. Room codes enable anyone to join, provided they enter the room with the correct password. You can create or join private matches from the main menu.

MATCHMAKING

Casual matchmaking mode is a quick and easy way to compete online that eliminates the planning and preparation involved in devising or joining tournaments or private matches. Choosing this option will let you randomly match and play against other gamers around the world. Competitive ranked matchmaking will be coming out soon, so keep an eye out for this mode when it becomes available!

Casual Matchmaking offers six playlists to choose from, including Head-to-Head (1v1), Teams (2v2), Wagers (2-4 players), Quick Match (3 holes, 2-4 players), Divot Derby, or High Rollers (3 holes, skins, 1v1) options.

GAME FORMATS

When playing in Local, Private, and Matchmaking rounds, there is an array of different game formats to select from. The biggest addition in PGA TOUR 2K23 is Sudden Death, an all-new tie-breaker system we’ve implemented to capture the intensity of the playoffs on the PGA TOUR. These options afford you greater variety when it comes to gameplay with a selection of shorter, quick-fix games and variations on point scoring.

Stroke Play (1 to 4 players)

Stroke play counts the number of strokes each player takes to complete the round. With multiple players, the person who completed the round with the least amount of strokes wins. You can also play alone to attempt and beat your best scores.

Stableford (1 to 4 players)

In Stableford format, you score points based on the number of strokes taken per hole. For example, you score eight points for a double eagle–otherwise known as an albatross—five points for an eagle, two points for a birdie, and minus three points for a double bogey or more. The player with the most points at the end of the round wins.

Match Play (2 players required)

Match Play is a 1v1 format. The golfer who makes the best score on each hole receives one point. The player with the most points at the end wins the match.

Skins (2 to 4 players)

This mode allows you to earn skins (in-game currency) from your opponents for every hole you win—or pay up for every hole you lose. The player with the lowest-scoring hole wins the skin. If two or more players tie, however, then no skin is awarded, and is instead, carried over to the next hole. The player who earns the highest payout by the end is the winner.

Four Ball (4 players required)

Four Ball is a ‘doubles’ style match where two players compete together against another team of two. The player with the best score on a hole earns a point for their team and the team with the most points wins the match.

Alternate Shot (4 players required)

Alternate Shot uses the same 2v2 format as Four-Ball. In this mode, however, you must take turns sharing the same ball with your partner to reach the hole. Getting to the hole in fewer strokes earns your team a point, and the team with the most points wins the match.

Scramble (4 players required)

Scramble is another 2v2 format that lets each team decide which shots are better and then play from that location for each shot. The lowest number of strokes per team, per hole, counts toward the final score. Again, the team with the lowest score at the end of the round wins.

Divot Derby

Divot Derby is a fun and chaotic mode in which 20 players tee off at the same time, sending multiple colored golf balls flying through the air.

You’ll be transfixed as you’re pitted against the other participants all competing to be the first player to put the ball in the hole. The first golfer to make it to the ninth and final hole wins. However, if you get knocked out early, you can sit back and watch the madness unfold for the rest of the competition.

While it may be about as far away from the focused and calculated mindset of conventional golf as possible, the white-knuckle thrill of the Divot Derby is a thing to behold. This mode will bring you some frantic fun with a unique golf 'battle-royale' style gameplay unseen anywhere else.

Topgolf (1-4 players)

PGA TOUR 2K23 Topgolf

The popular Topgolf format appears for the first time in the PGA TOUR 2K series and is playable both locally and online. Topgolf is an arcade-style in which you’ll take aim at a series of targets and attempt to score as many points as you can. You’ll receive more points based on how close your shot is to the target and how far away the target is. Again, the player who scores the most points wins the round.

The immensely popular MyCAREER mode has been enhanced further in PGA TOUR 2K23 to create the most immersive and challenging virtual tour experience yet. This year sees the number of fully licensed courses expanded to 20 and the number of playable events increased to 33, alongside 14 fully licensed players to test your skills against. Select events in the schedule now have the option to swap host locations for fresh courses from a curated list of official and community-created courses.

This mode allows you to play matches with a storytelling element and a focus on leveling up to unlock rewards. Progression is essential if you want to enter certain events, as you will need to meet specific criteria before you’re allowed to participate.

As you progress through your career, you’ll be able to unlock sponsors and earn various performance-based rewards. Leveling up your sponsor and achieving objectives is also key to unlocking items.

ONLINE SOCIETIES

Anyone who has played previous versions of the PGA TOUR 2K series will be well aware of our immersive Online Societies. This mode allows gamers to join and create their own leagues and play in various seasons, tournaments, and events with players across the globe.

This mode allows you to join up to ten societies at one time and compete against fellow society members in events set up by the admins.

Anyone can create a society, and when you do, you’ll have complete control of the member's list, events, and other settings including which members are granted admin rights.

PGA TOUR 2K23 TRAINING

The training course is the perfect place to hone your skills, practice your swing, and ensure you’re operating at the peak of your powers next time you enter a tournament online or compete for bragging rights against friends.

When taking shots on the driving range–a designated area for golfers to practice their swing–you receive feedback on the accuracy of your shot and backswing timing. Both elements are essential to master those precision shots and will provide you with clear instructions on how you can bring your game to the next level.

There are three modes in the training area for your to practice, they are:

  • Swing calibration: Find your perfect path on the Swing Stick with a quick set of calibration swings.
  • Lessons: Take lessons on swing basics, putting, clubs, and shot types, and advanced shots.
  • Practice: Improve your game by driving, chipping, and putting at the practice facility.

COURSE DESIGNER

PGA TOUR 2K23 COURSE DESIGNER

The Designer mode allows you to unleash your creative side and design a course the way you want to. From enhancing the aesthetic with trees and water features to changing the terrain and enhancing the difficulty with hills and bunkers, the Designer mode is where you become the architect.

When you’re happy with your creation, you can publish and share it with the rest of the PGA TOUR 2K23 community worldwide.

For a more in-depth look at all the features and functions of the designer area, take a peek at our how-to guide on creating your perfect golf course.

If you’ve not yet experienced the unparalleled virtual fun of PGA TOUR 2K23, there’s no time like the present to join the wealth of gamers competing on the world's premier golf simulator.

PGA Tour 2K23 delivers a mixed round of play – Review

Image of Chris Studley

In 2020, 2K re-branded HB Studios’ The Golf Club franchise. This led to the release of the first title in the PGA Tour 2K franchise: PGA Tour 2K21. 2K21 marked a new era of golf games, as it resulted in the first triple-A game since the old Tiger Woods/Rory McIlroy PGA Tour franchise to incorporate real PGA golfers and bring the sport back to the forefront of sports gaming. 2K21 was a solid first entry, and now 2K looks to build with the release of PGA Tour 2K23.

Related: Review: Though not a perfect swing, PGA Tour 2K21 delivers sweet drives to golf enthusiasts

This second title is a groundbreaking one for a few reasons. For one, it marks the first triple-A golf game to be released for the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Second, Tiger Woods is back, not just as the cover athlete but also as a playable golfer and a creative director behind the franchise. With EA Sports PGA Tour slated to be released in 2023, 2K23 is set to be an opening salvo in the EA/2K battle. But did it land fair on the course? As far as gameplay is concerned, it’s not too bad at all.

Step back onto the course

pga tour 2k23 story mode

PGA Tour 2K21’s gameplay system relied heavily on stick skills. The two primary ways to golf were by way of using either the left or right analog sticks. For PGA Tour 2K23, a new three-button combo using the A/X button has been added to the game. With this combo, players have to tap one button to determine a shot’s power, timing, and direction. It’s one that certainly is worth using for newcomers, as it only takes three taps to learn. This new addition should, at the very least, make the onboarding process a bit easier.

As far as the gameplay is concerned, the physics engine and gameplay haven’t changed much between 2K21 and 2K23. Those who used the sticks to golf won’t need to re-learn anything, as the controls are pretty much the same. It might sound odd — and somewhat unsurprising to some — to hear that a sports game plays the same as compared to its predecessor. However, the gameplay of 2K23 is not the problem. Rather, it is other parts of the game that bring this title down.

The Clubhouse builds matter this year

pga tour 2k23 story mode

Arguably the biggest difference between 2K21 and 2K23 is the presence of MyPlayer builds. In 2K21, the only way to upgrade a golfer was through the clubs. As we touched on in our preview of PGA Tour 2K23 earlier this year , this title was going to bring a big change. Developer HB Studios added three new components: Archetypes, Fittings, and Ball Sleeves. These, along with club upgrades, make up how a player can modify a golfer’s attributes and fine-tune their strengths and weaknesses.

To me, this was a much-needed change. Adding Archetypes, which vary from driving-heavy players to precision experts who know how to shape and putt, add variety to avatars and playing in MyCareer. After all, each golfer in the real PGA has strengths and weaknesses, so why not have the same in PGA Tour 2K23?

However, the existence of Fittings and Ball Sleeves could prove to be pernicious, and a lot of that has to do with MyCareer. PGA Tour 2K23’s career mode offers a lot of what its predecessor did: a rival system that has been slightly expanded to allow for different pathways, and an endorsement system where players can obtain clothing and customization options. While Fittings and Ball Sleeves can be obtained through defeating rivals in MyCareer and from playing the game, the amount needed to really mold a MyPlayer into a well-rounded machine is massive. You just won’t be able to supplement that through grinding in MyCareer.

All that begs an important question: what is the future for MyPlayer and builds? Is this a softer introduction to what NBA 2K does with MyPlayer & MyCareer? I hope not, even though it’s understandable from a financial standpoint why developers and publishers have gone full steam ahead into microtransactions. However, what’s not good is the practice of pricing people out of playing 2K23 thanks to too many barriers. That can happen, so there is a delicate balance that needs to be found with the future of Fittings, Ball Sleeves, and VC for PGA Tour 2K.

The course could use a bit of a trim

pga tour 2k23 story mode

One of the most notable omissions from 2K23 is the existence of online leaderboards. Yes, 2K23 does have online play. Users will be able to participate in online leagues through Societies, or play in traditional golf, skins, Divot Derby, and the new Topgolf mode, amongst others. However, no online leaderboards for any of these actually exist. Leaderboards were in 2K21, but not for 2K23. It’s not ideal for those who want more of a competitive experience, or just bragging rights.

Additionally, Societies don’t really have any control to limit the playing field in 2K23. This goes back to the issue of Fittings and Ball Sleeves, as there is no way to cap the amount used. If you’re trying to run a more competitive Society and want to have as even a level as possible from a cosmetic/attribute standpoint, that’s not possible.

Those two points, coupled with a lack of a concede putt option — something that would speed up online games in general — make the online part of 2K23 feel relatively incomplete. It would be nice, in general, to have more features that cater to all PGA Tour 2K players, whether that be casual or competitive ones.

That doesn’t mean that every other mode is bad in 2K23. Course Designer is back, bringing creativity back to the forefront in golfing. And getting back to MyCareer, it’s fine, but it doesn’t really have any exciting features. I wouldn’t advocate for a story mode, but more avenues to acquire customization collectibles, alongside other off-the-course commitments like press conferences and corporate events — with VC as rewards — could make this a bit more palatable.

The verdict

pga tour 2k23 story mode

PGA Tour 2K23 is a decent golf game, and it is the route to go if you didn’t play 2K21. 2K23’s gameplay doesn’t have any glaring problems, and it offers enough of a challenge that makes attaining a low score that much more satisfying. Its biggest issues are with what PGA Tour 2K23 does not offer.

A lack of basic online features, coupled with a MyPlayer system that does rely somewhat on microtransactions makes me just a bit worried about where this franchise is headed down the road. If you plan on playing with just the single-player modes, perhaps these two points are not that big of a deal. Nonetheless, the lack of these features, along with game modes that don’t move the needle all that much, make this a fine, but not great golf game.

pga tour 2k23 story mode

If you’re looking forward to PGA Tour 2K23 and what new stuff HB Studios has crammed into it, you’re in luck! 2K Games has released a boatload of info regarding the PGA Tour 2K23 new features, new control system and more, and there’s even new gameplay available, too!

PGA Tour 2K23 New Features:

ANALOG SWING

Crushing a drive off the tee box always starts with a confident approach. Before you even grip the club, you need to feel comfortable with your setup, which is why we’re giving you the option to choose between the standard analog swing stick swing and the new 3-Click swing in PGA TOUR 2K23.

3-CLICK SWING

Making its debut in the PGA TOUR 2K franchise, the 3-Click swing requires you to hold and release the A/X button (depending on your platform of choice) for power, and tap it twice to line up your swing path and club face angle. It’s as simple as one, two, three.

PLAY AS THE PROS

PGA TOUR 2K23 is the only place you can play as, or against, Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Lexi Thompson and more. The 11-time PGA TOUR Player of the Year leads a diverse group of talented, playable pros you can swing with in-game. In year’s past, you’d only be able to compete against the pros, but for the first time in the PGA TOUR 2K franchise you can take control of golf’s biggest names.

As if having one of the greatest athletes of all-time isn’t enough, we’re including another one as a playable celebrity pro: Michael Jordan. Drain long range, high arcing shots with one of the NBA’s greatest scorers around the green and from the fairway. Jordan is just one of the many of the playable celebrities in PGA TOUR 2K23, but you’ll have to wait for the rest.

VISIT WORLD-RENOWNED COURSES

PGA TOUR 2K23 boasts a vast collection of licensed courses that have played host to some of the game’s most memorable moments, and now it’s time to leave your mark in history. Experience the pageantry and challenge that comes with playing at world-renowned locations.

You’ll find 20 licensed courses in-game at launch, including new additions Wilmington Country Club, The Renaissance Club, St. George’s Golf and Country Club, and more. Keep an eye out for a full reveal of all the courses coming in PGA TOUR 2K23.

START YOUR PGA TOUR MyCAREER

Begin your professional career in PGA TOUR 2K23’s MyCAREER mode as a member of the Korn Ferry TOUR and graduate to the unmatched competitive setting of the PGA TOUR. With each tournament, you’ll be put to the test against the best talent on the planet, competing for FedExCup points and a shot at first place in the standings. Using your MyPLAYER creation, write your legacy by hitting clutch shots and become one of the game’s legendary players. Combat the elements and your peers as you strive to etch your name on numerous trophies, culminating in a shot at the prestigious THE PLAYERS Championship.

PLAY GOLF LIKE NEVER BEFORE

PGA TOUR 2K23 offers a variety of game modes and formats for your enjoyment. In our last game, multiplayer featured the always chaotic Divot Derby, where players raced from the tee box to the pin as fast as they could to be dubbed victorious, along with Online Societies where you could challenge fellow players around the world in one- to four-day tournaments. These popular formats are making their return in PGA TOUR 2K23, along with traditional Stroke and Match Play—but we’re excited to welcome Topgolf into the fold.

SHARE YOUR COURSE CREATIVITY

Using a deep toolbox of objects and features you can piece together 18 holes of majestic beauty, spend hours designing a hazardous swamp with treacherous rivers abound, create a dense woodland links-style course that weaves through towering trees, and much more. The only limit is the one you set on yourself. Unleash your creativity and share your masterpiece with your friends and the community by uploading it.

You can read more details on the game’s features over on the Clubhouse Report .

PGA Tour 2K23 swings out this October 14 on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Guess who’s back… back again.

pga tour 2k23 story mode

HIGH The refined three-click-and-stick swing controls are wonderful.

LOW The graphics are fairly flat, even on new hardware.

WTF Are we the only residents of “Golf Island?”

Unlike yearly renditions of football, basketball or hockey, an annual golf game is hardly a guarantee. After EA Sports severed ties with then-embattled Tiger Woods and failed to replicate the same success with Rory McIlroy, digital golf has been a little less consistent, year over year. A new contender arose in the form of The Golf Club series, but its sense of authenticity over escapism didn’t quite strike the same notes with genre fans.

Enter 2K Sports, which took The Golf Club ’s hyperrealistic approach to digital links and married it with proven videogame know-how in 2021. Its initial 2K21 effort certainly felt like a return to form, but the formula still needed adjustment. It appears that balance has been struck, as PGA Tour 2K23 has come full circle, welcoming Tiger Woods back to videogame golf, and creating the most enjoyable golf game in nearly a decade.

Starting with the positive, 2K Sports heavily refined the control scheme, making it infinitely more accessible without losing the accuracy and feel of a well-placed shot. No longer do newcomers have to revisit training modes to ensure straight, deep drives or precise putts. Instead, it allows users to figure it out, adjusting the difficulty to match their progression. The result is an experience that encourages repeat play without needless frustration. Golf is still tough, but for the first time since the arcade-heavy Rory McIlroy title, success seems attainable and entirely up to user input.

pga tour 2k23 story mode

The swing stick mechanic–always a difficult endeavor for gamers lounging on a couch–is much more forgiving, depending on the chosen difficulty level. Perhaps more hardcore players will find this forgiveness cheap and pandering, but as a person who only gets a few hours to play each week, I genuinely appreciated the ability to just sit back and play some golf.

The classic three-click swing mechanic, long considered the standard for golf titles, is back in a heavily refined, improved form. It takes a few seconds to learn, but once users get the hang of the timing, the sense of reward is huge when placing a long drive right in the heart of the fairway. Of course, weather conditions still play a role in a shot’s likelihood of success, yet they never prevent the user from overcoming the challenge. 2K23 presents an ideal balance of control options, and longtime enthusiasts will likely be thankful.

Keeping things light and enjoyable, PGA Tour 2K23 features a number of well-known pros, a few unexpected celebrities, and a fairly deep player creator, so users can populate their games with anyone they want. Each pro has clear strengths and weaknesses, offering new challenges to overcome on each course.

pga tour 2k23 story mode

It should be noted that several big-name golfers are not available, thanks to them moving to the divisive LIV Golf organization. While it was a little strange not seeing some famous faces, it makes Tiger’s presence feel more comforting. Besides, I sincerely doubt the lack of Dustin Johnson and Talor Gooch is going to dramatically reduce sales.

This is all solid so far, but where PGA Tour 2K23 lags is in the presentation. Golf may never be a “rock and roll” sport, but I give credit to 2K for including the wildly popular TopGolf minigame mode, a full slate of today’s most popular gear, and a welcome sense of loose enjoyment that golf titles have lacked for several years. Still, at the end of the day, this is golf, meaning players are still wrapped in a sense of isolation.

The commentary is typically dry, with inflection and enthusiasm saved for only the best shots and leaderboard comebacks. Plus, 2K23 never gives users the sense they’re part of a tournament while playing. Some nifty cutaways in the broadcast try to replicate that ‘being there’ feel, but things still center on another long, lonely march through 18 holes. This might be inherent to the sport of golf, but it would be nice to see a little more sizzle as users progress.

pga tour 2k23 story mode

Visually, the graphics are decidedly last-gen. Player models are solid, the limited slate of animations is perfectly fine, and the courses have the expected level of detail and accuracy, but there’s a looming sense of familiarity that may make fans wonder why they’re staring at the same renditions of Pebble Beach and TPC Sawgrass they’ve seen for years. Background visuals are simply ‘there’ with little effect on immersion into these vastly different regions. I expect most gamers won’t care as long as the shots keep falling, but I hope future editions bring something new to the presentation.

Despite these visual criticisms, PGA Tour 2K23 delivers immersive gameplay. The simple MyCareer Mode isn’t trying to tell a sappy underdog story, but rather makes players work hard for big rewards — from entry-level tournaments to the heights of the PGA Tour. Unlike most career modes, 2K23 ’s quick gameplay and well-paced player progression give that unbeatable sense of ‘just one more game’ that’s sadly missing from so many bloated sports titles today.

In the end, PGA Tour 2K23 is far from perfect, but also much closer than anyone could have expected. With EA Sports re-entering the video golf scene next year, I have high hopes that fresh competition and a little fine-tuning will encourage 2K to deliver a resurgence of excitement to golf game enthusiasts in the years to come.

PGA Tour 2K23 TGC

How TGC Tours Expands Online MyCareer Mode In PGA Tour 2K23

Image of Kevin Scott

So let’s say you’ve already finished the MyCareer mode in PGA Tour 2K23 and maybe even played through it a few times to come out on top of the FedEx standings. You’ve explored all of the casual online playlists the game has to offer and defeated enough people to realize just how little it matters until a proper competitive realm is added. Let’s also assume you’ve joined an online society or two and come to the conclusion that there will always be members who consistently end up ahead of you on the leaderboard. But now that you’ve done and all that and seen everything the game has to offer, you’re probably left with something of a hollow feeling as you wonder what else there is to experience within PGA Tour 2K23 . These qualifications would make you an ideal candidate to discover the world of TGC Tours in PGA Tour 2K23 .

TGC Tours is a third-party website that gathers scores from its online societies in the game across all platforms to allow you to compete against others at your skill level. Dating back to The Golf Club origins of PGA Tour 2K23 , this entirely free site that’s run on a volunteer basis has been a welcome supplement to what the games themselves have offered. Though they do their best to walk you through the available options and give step-by-step instructions on how to join the TGC Tours, their site can still be a little overwhelming to newcomers.

To help demystify the process and get you started down the online career path that’s right for you, here’s a bit of a primer on how to get the most out of life on the TGC Tours.

TGC Tours And PGA Tour 2K23

Registration & qualifying.

Once you’ve signed up for TGC Tours, registering for the weekly qualifying event is as easy as clicking a button. You’ll need to remember though to first turn on third-party data access from the settings menu to allow the website to access your scores. All you’ve got to do then is join the TGC Tours (Challenge Circuit) online society in PGA Tour 2K23 and start playing the four rounds that comprise every event. If you score well enough, you’ll receive a tour card and be placed on one of the many flights based on your skill level where you will play your next event. If you don’t score well enough, you’ll have another chance to qualify next week.

Be aware of the required settings before starting your TGC Tours career and get plenty of practice using them ahead of teeing off. Master difficulty can be tricky without a power bar as a guide, especially when putting and hitting partial shots.

pga tour 2k23 story mode

Challenge Circuits

With tours that run all the way from CC-A to CC-L and over 100 players in each of those flights, there’s no shortage of competitors to be found. If you perform well enough in any event, you can receive a promotion mark or two. Earning three of these promotion marks over the course of events will see you bumped to the next highest flight. On the flip side, a poor showing in an event will saddle you with a demotion mark. Once you have five demotion marks, you’ll be forced to compete on the next lowest tour.

It’s also possible to shoot so much better than everyone else on your tour that you’ll immediately move up a level. Special promotion events occurring periodically will give you yet another at shot at climbing the ladder. Should you be skilled enough to climb all the way past CC-A, you’ll then find the best players in the game, providing the ultimate challenge on the site’s pro tours.

Beer League

Competing on the challenge circuits or pro tours will require that you use the analog swing stick when playing your rounds. For those who prefer PGA Tour 2K23 ‘s new three-click swing control option, you’ll have the option of participating instead on the separate Beer League tour and in-game online society. You will have to forego entering the challenge circuits though if you opt for the three-click-friendly Beer league, as players are not permitted to participate in both.

True Sim Tour

Looking for the ultimate challenge? The True Sim Tour offers that to players by turning off nearly all of the visual aids that can help you out when assessing each shot. This means that you’ll have to gauge things like your lie and elevation by your eye only rather than relying on the game to give you some indication. Even when putting, you’ll need to assess the breaks of the green with intuition and hope your gut doesn’t steer you wrong. The only saving grace on the True Sim Tour is that the difficulty is set to pro rather than master, which might lead to slightly fewer instances of tearing your hair out due to an errant shot. The other good thing about it is that you can compete on the challenge circuits and and the True Sim Tour at the same time.

pga tour 2k23 story mode

Should you choose to not actually want to join and compete on the TGC Tours, the website does have other components that can be of some assistance regardless. For instance, they’re diligent about vetting courses from the community and then adding them to their tours should they meet their standards. So if you’re ever hard-pressed for some new courses to play, simply log on to TGC Tours and you’ll find no shortage of quality options from their section devoted to the PGA Tour 2K23 course list. They’ll also be able to tell you whether a course is real or fictional and how difficult you’re likely to find the layout. Keep an eye out on the forums for course design competitions that ultimately only serve to add more quality courses to the game.

Along with the maintenance of the leaderboards on all of the tours (which includes making sure no funny business is happening), TGC Tours also compiles historical data detailing how you’ve done over the course of your career. Though it can be a little buggy (the site is free after all), your profile stores your scores in any event you compete in and where that puts you compared to the rest of the field. You’ll be able to chart your current and past rankings on the site and how much money you’ve been able to earn. Please note that all earnings are hypothetical only, so don’t send TGC Tours any angry e-mails about being owed money.
