1 Day Isle of Skye with Fairy Pools Tour from Inverness

1 Day Isle of Skye with Fairy Pools Tour from Inverness

An amazing 1-day journey that visits the most popular places of Scotland, including Loch Ness, Eilean Donan Castle, and the Isle of Skye.

fairy pools tour

Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle

On the shores of Loch Ness you will be told stories of “Nessie”, of the Great Glen boundary fault, and of the mighty Urquhart Castle.

The Great Glen is a huge valley in the Highlands, eroded by glaciers more than 10,000 years ago. These glaciers carved the valley, forming a series of deep lakes, among which is Loch Ness.

Urquhart Castle saw great conflict during its 500 years as a Middle-ages fortress. Control of the castle passed back and forth between the Scots and English during the Wars of Independence.

The Five Sister of Kintail and Glen Shiel

The Five Sisters of Kintail are hills: Sgurr nan Spainteach, Sgurr na Ciste Duibhe, Sgurr na Carnach, Sgurr Fhuaran, Sgurr nan Saighead.

Landscapes are unforgettable and the history of this place is unique. Here is where the Battle of Glen Shiel took place in 1719, between the Jacobite, supported by 300 Spanish troops; and a government army loyal to King George I. Despite their superior numbers, the Jacobite lost. Among various others, Rob Roy, fought amongst the Jacobite.

Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle is said to be the most photographed castle in Scotland, and once you have seen it for yourself, sitting majestically in the middle of 3 different Lochs: Duich, Alsh and Long, you will understand why! The stronghold of the clan MacRae has been used as filming location in James Bond’s “The world is not enough”, and in countless other movies.

Skye Bridge

We drive across the Skye Bridge, making our way “over the sea to Skye”. The views from the Bridge can be far-reaching and spectacular – catch your first glimpse of the mighty Cuillin Mountains as we drive over the bridge.

The Cuillins

Take in the stunning views of the Cuillin Mountains. The Black Cuillin Ridge was formed 60 million years ago and is the remnant of an eroded magma chamber of a huge volcano. Consisting mainly of hard gabbro and basalt rock, the ridge was sculpted into its current form by glacial activity and subsequent weathering over the millennia, which created the unique jagged character of the Ridge. The Red Cuillin have a rounded appearance, due to being mainly composed of granite, which is softer than gabbro, hence less resistant to the glaciers.

The village of Portree is situated on the east side of Skye overlooking a sheltered bay, and it is the main town of the island.

Portree was first established as a fishing village at the beginning of the 19th century by Lord MacDonald. The name of the town of Portree commemorates the visit of King James the V in 1540. Records have it that it was originally called Portray and was believed to have been inhabited as far back as the Mesolithic period. Its name really comes from the Gaelic for Port on the Slope.

Talisker Distillery

Talisker distillery based in Carbost is one of the three whisky distillery on the Isle of Skye, the oldest working distillery on the Isle of Skye. Set on the shores of Loch Harport with dramatic views of the Cuillin mountains. Producing an alluring, sweet, full-bodied single malt is so easy to enjoy, and like Skye itself, so hard to leave. We shall go through the visitor center (not on the tour) and if available sample one of the fine whiskeys produced here.

Fairy Pools

We continue on our journey in the shadow of the Cuillin Mountains. Walk with the supernaturals through fairy-sized landscapes and their most famous baths, the Fairy Pools. For this part of the tour, you must take the fairy oath.

Please wear waterproof clothing and footwear, as we travel to fairy land by going underneath waterfalls. The pools are located in one of the most dramatic landscapes on Skye. The fairies regularly bathe here, in the crystal clear green pools of the River Brittle. Weather permitting, you can swim in the pools of the river, one of the UK’s best wild swimming spots. Have fun diving under natural arches and waterfalls, but please do not spy on the fairies, as they can easily take offence!

We in no way endorse swimming in the pools and it is done entirely at your own risk .

As we arrive back on the mainland our route back to Inverness then takes us across a large expanse of wilderness, before returning to the city for drop off at the Cathedral.

  • Please bring suitable waterproof clothing and good footwear – the weather can change quickly in the north west, and a rain jacket may be needed even if it is bright and sunny when we leave.
  • Minibus travel: 8, 16 or 29-seat vehicles, depending on the group size

Through the wilds of the North-West Highlands

Wave goodbye to Inverness as we travel north to cross over the Kessock Bridge to the Black Isle. From here, our tour will follow part of the route of the North Coast 500, travelling through areas of stunning scenery in the one of the remotest parts of Scotland, such as the Black Isle, Loch Carron and the mountains of the North-West Highlands. Whilst travelling through these wildly beautiful areas you will be able to enjoy a short break in the lovely hamlet of Achnasheen, perched beside the River Bran.

Across the Bridge to Skye

We’ll continue west and you’ll cross onto the little island of Eilean Ban, where noted Scottish naturalist and author Gavin Maxwell lived whilst he was observing the local wildlife. Eilean Ban now forms a part of the Skye Bridge connects the Scottish mainland to the village of Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye. We’ll stop here for you to stretch your legs and get some photographs before continuing deeper into the misty isle.

Enjoy lunch in Portree

We’ll journey past the Cuillin Hills and the Sligachan Bridge whilst your driver-guide will enlighten you with tales of the history and legends of the Isle of Skye. We will then continue our journey through Skye to Portree, the largest town on the island, and one of its highlights. This will be our lunch stop, where you will have time to explore the town and take in the lovely views of the colourful harbourside cottages – just watch out for the seagulls!

The wonders of the Fairy Pools

Our next stop will be the Fairy Pools, we will spend approximately 90 minutes here so you can enjoy the gentle walk up this stunning network of bluey, green waterfalls and streams. These beautiful streams, which sit amongst the craggy mountains of the Cuillins are an incredible highlight of your day travelling to the Isle of Skye with us.

We will then begin our journey back to the mainland, which will take us to one of the most picturesque and iconic castles in Scotland, Eilean Donan Castle. This castle is also a very popular location for films and TV shows with its spectacular setting perched on its own little island at the head of Loch Duich!

Monster spotting alongside Loch Ness

Your day concludes with a bit of monster spotting as you drive through the Great Glen, a fault line which runs across the width of Scotland, splitting the country in two, and along the shores of Loch Ness as we travel back to Inverness.

  • Chevron down What to Bring
  • No matter when you visit, the weather in Scotland can be “changeable”, to say the least. We suggest that you bring suitable clothing for all conditions, including a waterproof jacket (it has been known to rain in Scotland), sunglasses and plenty of layers.
  • Ensure you bring shoes suitable for short walks, on rough or uneven terrain.
  • Although most attractions & eating establishments we visit accept card payments, we would also recommend bringing cash with you.
  • Don’t forget a camera to snap the fantastic memories you’ll make on tour with us!
  • Please limit your luggage to 1 x small/medium piece per person (no more than 15kg), along with 1 x small handbag or daypack.

We chose Highland experience tours because the trip they had planned seemed really cool. The places we visited were amazing and overall, we had a great time. However, what made the experience truly incredible were our two guides Peach and Donnie. Peach's story telling was so captivating and Donnie's knowledge of history facts is quite incredible. They are also both very friendly and throughout the whole tour, they make sure you feel engaged in the experience and that you are looked after. Overall, I strongly recommend you book the Skye and Fairy pools day trip. It is definitely worth the money. And hopefully, if you are lucky, you will have Peach and Donnie as your guides!

Spectacular tour! The day flew by in the blink of an eye. Peach and Donnie were incredible, they accompanied us telling us the legends of beautiful Skye and the myths linked to the places seen along the way. Wonderful stop at Eilen Donan Castle, surrounded by a landscape that seems straight out of fairy tales. The experience at the Sligachan River is magical, try it to believe it. Above expectations!

This was a highly entertaining and interesting tour. I would recommend it whole heartedly! The fairy pools were stunning and well worth a visit. Peach the tour guide was so enthusiastic and engaging, she gave herself fully to her role. Donny our driver was also excellent. This is one of the best tours I’ve ever done!

Fairy Pools in Scotland: The Complete Guide

Sergio Del Rosso Photography

Fairy Pools

Scotland's magical Fairy Pools can be found on the Isle of Skye near Glenbrittle. The iconic natural formations, which sit at the foot of the Black Cuillins mountains, are crystal-clear blue pools on the River Brittle that are best experienced as part of a walking route. While the pools feel like something out a fantasy novel, they're really a series of waterfalls with no mythical backstory or specific legend attached to them.

The pools have become increasingly popular over the past few years, especially with the growth of Instagram, and many travelers stop by the site to grab a few impressive photos during a visit to the Isle of Skye. The pools are a great addition to any Isle of Skye itinerary, but can also be experienced via a day trip from Inverness. Travelers exploring Skye on their own will need a rental car or camper van to access the Fairy Pools.

What To See And Do

Get up close to the Fairy Pools via a walking trail , which winds through the foothills of the Black Cuillins and stops at several small waterfalls that spill out into otherworldly blue pools. It's about 1.5 miles to and from the first pool when leaving the nearby parking lot, and the other pools can be accessed by continuing upriver from the first pool. Most visitors hike along the trail, snap a few photos, and then return to the parking lot, but you can also explore the area off-trail or even take the risk of leaping into the perpetually-cold water for a swim.

Swimming is allowed anywhere in the river, and some more adventurous visitors may even dare to leap off the waterfalls themselves. Swimming is best done during the summer when the weather is warmer, but feel free to test your nerve any time of year.

For a lengthier hike , head past the Fairy Pools towards Sgurr an Fheadain and the Waterpipe Gully. There is a small uphill path that stretches about five miles, looping back to Glen Brittle with great views of Macleod's Tables on the way down. There are also numerous other hikes in the area, so grab a map before you head out if you're looking for a day trek that passes the pools but also gives you more of a workout.

How To Get There

International visitors can arrive in Isle of Skye by renting a car in either Inverness or Glasgow and then driving several hours to the vast island. The Fairy Pools are located on the western part of Skye, and Carbost is the closest village. There is a parking lot about five miles from Carbost where travelers should park before heading to the pools. Parking costs 5 pounds per car. From the parking lot, follow the gravel path to the Fairy Pools, which are about 20 minutes walking distance from the parking lot. The route can be steep and muddy, and it crosses the river at a few different points, so be sure to use caution when trekking towards the pools. The walk is best for those who are relatively fit, but it's accessible for older kids and teens as well.

Several tour companies in Inverness offer day trips to the Isle of Skye that include the Fairy Pools. These can be a good option for travelers who want an overview of the area without having to drive or navigate narrow roads, or who just want to take in the general vibe of Skye without staying on the island. Tours from Inverness typically also include stops at the Quiraing, the town of Portree, Eilean Donan Castle, and Loch Ness, which is located between Inverness and the Isle of Skye. Look for companies like WOW Scotland Tours or Tour Skye to make the most of a day trip.

Tips For Visiting

  • Visiting the Fairy Pools is possible year-round, but consider the current weather conditions when planning to hike in. Be sure to wear sturdy, waterproof shoes, especially when it's raining or muddy, and bring along a rain jacket or poncho. When the weather is particularly rainy, it can be challenging to cross the river, so be aware and go slowly.
  • On busier days, the parking lot can be full, so plan to arrive earlier in the day if possible. When the lot is full, it's best to wait for a spot to open up as many visitors only stay for an hour or so at the pools. Consider visiting during the off-season and during on weekdays to avoid the crowds. Holiday weekends, especially during the summer, can be crowded.
  • Wild swimming is allowed in the pools but jump into the cold waters at your own risk. There are no lifeguards or staff around, so only swim the pools if you are confident in your abilities (and you've brought along a towel).
  • Toilets are located at the nearby Glenbrittle Campsite Cafe, which also serves coffee and snacks. Do not leave any litters or items behind when walking to the pools and use the trash cans at the cafe if you need to toss something.
  • The Talisker distillery , one of three whiskey distilleries on the Isle of Skye, is located nearby to the pools in Carbost. It can be a great addition to a day out in the area, and visitors can tour the facility to learn about whiskey production and even taste some of the blends. Several different tours are available, and it's recommended to book in advance online to secure a specific time.

Fairy Pools Visitor Guide

Fairy Pools Skye

The Fairy Pools are located at the foot of the Black Cuillin mountains on the Isle of Skye . These crystal-clear pools of water are one of the most-visited attractions on the island, drawing tens of thousands of visitors each year.

Visitors can take a walk along the river, stop for a picnic, or even swim in the fairy pools if they’re brave enough to face the cold water. The walk to the pools is quite straightforward with well-maintained paths, though it can be a wee bit muddy after rain.

Fairy Pools Skye

The Fairy Pools are a natural wonder on Scotland’s Isle of Skye. They’re renowned for their crystal-clear blue waters, cascading over a series of waterfalls against the backdrop of the majestic Black Cuillin mountains. This enchanting spot offers captivating views, making it a must-see for nature enthusiasts and sightseers alike.

If you visit the Isle of Skye, you have to visit the Fairy Pools, the beautifully clear crystal-blue pools of water that lie at the foot of the Black Cuillins. These pools have become something of a mecca for nature lovers, and tourists from all over the world come to walk along the path that follows the River Brittle as it runs off from the imposing mountains that lie behind it.

The complete return walk to the first pool is only around 1.5 miles, but there’s a bit of a scramble across stepping stones in places, so anyone with mobility problems might find it difficult to complete.

If you drive to the pools, then simply head to the village of Carbost in the west of Skye and follow the signs to the fairy pools which are located in Glen Brittle. The journey from Carbost to the pools should take no more than 15 minutes, depending on how many tourists are heading in the same direction (usually a LOT).

As you approach the glen, you should see a sign pointing to a Forestry Commission car park where you can park up and take the short walk out to the pools. Be aware, though, that the pools are one of the top attractions on Skye so they can get very busy at times, with tour coaches lining the road in both directions, so I recommend getting there early.

Fairy Pools

The Highlights

1: The walk to the pools is short but very enjoyable thanks to the scenic views across the glen. It’s possible to extend the route past the pools by continuing into the Black Cuillin mountains. For more information, see the Walk Highlands website .

2: The pools totally live up to the hype when the sun is out, as the colours are beautiful. Just bear in mind that if you visit on a grey day, the pools will be much less scenic.

3: The path that connects the fairy pools to Sligachan is a feature that visitors frequently overlook. I 100% recommend attempting this route as it crosses one of the nicest parts of Skye. The trail begins at the first waterfall closest to the car park.

Visiting Tips

1: Like most of Skye, this attraction gets very busy in the tourist season, so I recommend visiting in the off-peak months (May–June, September–October).

2: The walk to the Fairy Pools can be quite rugged and wet, especially if it has rained recently. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots (link to boot reviews) are highly recommended.

3: Other recommended outdoor attractions on Skye are the Quiraing and the Old Man of Storr , and if you want to continue the fairy theme, the Fairy Glen .

Fairy Pools

Tourist Information

The walk to the pools is fairly easy at the start as the footpath comprises a well-maintained gravel section. However, later on, you’ll find yourself having to hop over several places that cross the River Brittle, where the ‘bridge’ has been made out of rocks placed at key locations.

The downside to this is that the rocks can get very slippery, especially if it has been raining, so unless you want to spend the afternoon walking around with wet socks, I recommend taking great care when crossing.

You can’t really get lost on this short walk as it’s obvious where you have to go, and there’ll probably be a hundred other tourists to follow as they make their way to the first waterfall. At this point, you’ll be able to stop and soak up the views of Glen Brittle and the River Brittle, with the backdrop of the mountains providing a truly magical setting.

The water flowing over the hard basalt and softer limestone rocks over many thousands of years naturally eroded the rocks to form the pools. Over time, this erosion created the cascades and beautifully crystal-clear pools that we see today.

The Fairy Pools are particularly attractive on a sunny day and there are usually a few brave people swimming in them, especially in the first pool where you can jump in from the waterfall above. The second pool is also good for swimming as there’s a natural underwater arch that you can swim through, while the rest of the pools are much shallower and less suitable for swimming.

It won’t take long to see the pools, maybe one hour, so afterwards you might consider following either of the footpaths that lead into the Cuillins or to Sligachan .

If you decide to head into the Black Cuillins, be aware that the mountains become treacherous the higher you climb. You’ll need good-quality, warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy boots, as the Cuillin Ridge is a strenuous climb with steep ascents, descents, and lots of scrambling.

Fairy Pools

Things to Do

Swimming in the Fairy Pools : The crystal-clear pools of water on the River Brittle provide a chilly, but invigorating swimming experience that you won’t forget. Just remember to take care on the rocks as they’re a wee bit slippery and it’s easy to take a tumble (don’t ask me how I know that…).

Hiking around Glen Brittle : The Fairy Pools are located at the base of the Black Cuillins near Glen Brittle, in an area that offers several picturesque hiking trails such as the route to Sligachan . The heather-covered moorland and the views of the Cuillin Mountains make the trek a truly memorable experience.

Photography at the Pools : The Fairy Pools are a photographer’s paradise. The vivid colours of the pools, coupled with the dramatic backdrop of the Cuillins, make for absolutely breathtaking photos. For the best shots, try to wait for a sunny day as that’s when the water takes on its famous deep blue hue.

Wildlife Watching : Keep your eyes open for the wide variety of wildlife that lives in the area around the Fairy Pools, including golden eagles and red deer. If you’re thinking of hiking in the area afterwards, taking a pair of binoculars is highly recommended. Click here to read binocular reviews.

Picnic beside the pools : After exploring the Fairy Pools, perch yourself on one of the big rocks next to them and unpack a picnic. Just ensure to take your litter with you as there are no bins at the pools, though there are some in the car park.

Things to Do Nearby

Sligachan . Isle of Skye IV47 8SW. 21-minute drive. Attractive waterfall on the Allt Dearg Mor River not far from the famous Sligachan Old Bridge. There is a well-used path from the Fairy Pools car park to the waterfall or visitors can take a much shorter walk from the A863 near the River Sligachan.

Bruach na Frithe . Isle of Skye IV47 8SW. A mountain region on Skye that’s one of the easiest to walk in the Black Cuillins, but it is still a difficult trek. Stunning views from the summit but part of the walk is quite treacherous. Note that due to the iron-rich rocks, compasses will not work correctly.

Glen Brittle Waterfalls . Isle of Skye IV47 8TA. 5-minute drive. A waterfall in a picturesque landscape a few miles south of the Fairy Pools. A stone and gravel track runs through Glen Brittle which allows access to the falls. Parking is available for around 8 cars at the start of the track where the single-track road crosses the Allt a Choire Ghreadaidh burn.

Talisker Distillery . Carbost, Isle of Skye IV47 8SR. 13-minute drive. The oldest working whisky distillery on Skye. Talisker is a highly-rated single malt distilled on the banks of Loch Harport. The distillery offers guided tours as well as exclusive tasting experiences.

Loch Brittle . Carbost, Isle of Skye IV47 8TA. 11-minute drive. A sea loch on the southwest coast of Skye. There is a sand beach that separates the loch from Glen Brittle. A footpath allows visitors to walk along the eastern shoreline of the loch while the western side offers a much more difficult path.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there toilets at the fairy pools.

The newly-renovated car park at the Fairy Pools has toilet facilities.

How long does it take to walk to Fairy Pools?

The distance from the car park to the first waterfall is 1.5 miles (2.4 km) on rough but fairly level paths which should take most visitors 20 to 30 minutes to walk. Expect to spend 1.5 to 2 hours in total at the Fairy Pools.

Why are the Fairy Pools called Fairy Pools?

There is no historical record that associates the Fairy Pools with fairies, but a local legend says that a local chief of Clan MacLeod married a fairy, hence the pools are named after them.

It is more likely, however, that the pools were given the nickname due to their ethereal blue colours which are caused by the colour of the underlying bedrock.

Is it safe to swim in the Fairy Pools?

It is perfectly safe to swim in the Fairy pools, though visitors should note the water is cold year-round with an average temperature of 11 °C. The first waterfall is the highest and has the deepest pool of water.

Itinerary and Map +

Itinerary & map, your adventure begins.

Your adventure begins!

Our journey skirts the shores of Loch Ness for the first 45 minutes; keep your eyes peeled for Nessie, and also for the iconic Urquhart Castle, which juts out on a promontory into the famous loch. As we venture further west the desolate mountainous landscapes become increasingly dramatic, until we reach the shores of Loch Duich on the stunning west coast.

Throughout your time on the coach our highly experienced driver guide will provide an informative and entertaining commentary, providing a fascinating insight into the history, culture and landscapes of the Scottish Highlands.

Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most photographed castles in the world, and the setting for films including The Highlander, James Bond – The World Is Not Enough and Rob Roy, to name but a few. We will spend around 10 minutes here, to enable you to take some photos of the iconic castle, and use the facilities.

The Cuillin Mountains

The Cuillin Mountains

At around 11am we will arrive at Sligachan, a stunning spot where your hiking adventure begins. Before you set off take a stroll over the distinctive Sligachan Bridge and admire the impressive bronze memorial to Norman Collie and John Mackenzie, two pioneering climbers who made many first ascents of the mighty Cuillin peaks which dominate the landscape here.

You will require an OS map (either number 32 South Skye on the 1/50 or 411 Skye Cuillin Hills on 1/25) and compass from this point as the walk is wholly self-guided. You are responsible for getting yourself from here to the meeting point at the Fairy Pools. Whilst the walk itself is not physically challenging, there are places where it is possible to get lost, so you do need hiking and navigation experience.

The banks of the Alt Dearg Mor

The banks of the Alt Dearg Mor

The stony path ascends gently alongside the lively Alt Dearg Mor stream, and you will quickly lose count of the number of waterfalls and pools it features along the way. Twisted rowan trees adorn the banks of the stream and the crystal clear water bubbles down over a rocky bed.

Although the beauty of the cascading waterfalls is mesmerising, this is more than matched by the surrounding vistas; as you walk you will find yourself torn between where to look! Accompanied by the roar of the stream you can admire a 360 degree panorama of highlights including: Loch Sligachan; the mountains of Glamaig, Bla Bheinn and Marsco; the famous Black Cuillins; and heather-clad moorland.

After around 4km the path flattens out, the stream recedes to a trickle and the resulting calm atmosphere gives you a true taste of the remote nature of hiking on Skye. Be sure to keep an eye out for the red deer which graze here sometimes.

The Bealach na Mhaim

The Bealach na Mhaim

2 – 3 hours after you have started your hike (we allow plenty of time for taking photos, paddling and simply enjoying the world-class views!!) you will arrive at the highest point of the walk; the Bealach na Mhaim.

When you reach this plateau it is a fairly flat walk for around 1km, past a couple of peaty mountain lochans in the shadow of the Black Cuillins. By this stage you will have ascended 335 metres (1100 feet) and will be truly immersed in the awe-inspiring wilderness of the mountains.

Coire na Creiche

Coire na Creiche

It’s time to get up close and personal with the hills you have been admiring from afar as you start the easy traverse of the stony slopes of the Bruach na Frithe. The path is rough and rocky for the next couple of kilometres as you make your way around to Coire na Creich, which translates as the corrie of devastation (ask your guide to explain why later!). As you stand at the top of the corrie you can see the stream snaking its way down the mountain to the Fairy Pools, which start just a short walk away.

The Fairy Pools

The Fairy Pools

You have walked 7km from Sligachan, and will now have approximately two hours to walk the last 2.5km, giving you plenty of time to soak up the beauty of the Fairy Pools as you go. From your starting point in the shadow of the Black Cuillin you will get a bird’s-eye view of the other visitors, who will be concentrated down at the start of the path near the largest pools and most impressive waterfalls. We’d recommend spending most of your time further up the track, as it is more peaceful but you can still enjoy the beauty of the mesmerising blue waters. We will meet you at the carpark at 4.30pm, ready for a prompt departure at 4.45pm. The Fairy Pools is a stunning sight and is popular for a very good reason. However, by taking the more adventurous option to hike here it enables you to escape the crowds and enjoy the world-class scenery at your leisure. See the Fairy Pools like a local, and enjoy your very own slice of Skye paradise.

Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle

Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle

As we embark on our journey back to Inverness it is time for you to sit back and relax in the comfort of our mini-coach (your tired legs will definitely appreciate the spacious reclining seats by this stage!). It’s not time to doze yet though, as our guide will keep you entertained with plenty more stories on the way home, accompanied by a lively soundtrack to keep the mood upbeat.

Our last stop of the day is at Urquhart Castle. Here you will have the opportunity to view this iconic castle from our favourite road-side vantage point, perfect for taking a few final photos of an awesome day out.

This hike to the Fairy Pools is truly one of Scotland’s best, and is where we at WOW take our friends when they come to visit. By the time we arrive back in Inverness at 8.15pm we are certain that you will have fallen in love with the Scottish Highlands, and will agree with us on this one!

Again, please remember that the hike is entirely self-guided and is only suitable for guests who have hiking experience, and are comfortable navigating using an OS map and compass. You are responsible for getting yourself to the meeting point.

Want to do the fairy pools Skye walk but need some more information? You’ve come to the right place! This fairy pools Isle of Skye guide will prepare you with everything you need to know.

If you’re visiting the Isle of Skye or following my 7-day Scotland route , chances are you’ve heard about the magic of the fairy pools. But what is the walk to the fairy pools like?

Situated at the bottom of the Black Cuillin mountains, (which are an attraction in themselves) the crystal clear blue pools are paradise for any nature lover.  But, the walk to the Fairy Pools isn’t as straightforward as we might like it to be.

In the following post, I explain everything you might need to know about the iconic fairy pools in Scotland. If you’re worried about the walk, how to get there, or whether or not it’s for you, keep reading!

Fairy Pools Skye Walk: A Summary

The fairy pools on the Isle of Skye have been carved by the flow of the River Brittle . Whether you choose to bravely jump into the freezing cold water, or appreciate the view from the sidelines, the fairy pools are a great day out on the Isle of Skye.

As the fairy pools are one of the main attractions on the island, you’re more than likely to be sharing the experience with many other tourists. But, due to the number of fairy pools in the area, you’re more than likely to find your own area to swim in without having to share (hooray!).

However, the busiest time is midday and afternoon, so arrive early if you want to avoid the swarms of eager fairy searchers. 🧚🏼‍♂️

If you want to walk off the beaten track from the pools, you can use them as a starting point for some of the best hikes in the Black Cuillin mountains.

Where to stay for the Fairy Pools walk

If you’re looking to stay on the Isle of Skye when visiting the magical fairy pools, I recommend the following accommodations:

🛏️  For budget backpackers, the best hostel on the Isle of Skye for solo and budget travellers is The Cowshed . If you’re a solo traveller on the Isle of Skye, this is the perfect place to stay to meet other backpackers and be right in the centre of the action.

🌳  Best Airbnb on the Isle of Skye: Knock View Apartments . If you’re a couple or group looking for somewhere to stay on the Isle of Skye, this apartment is perfect.

🏨  Best Hotel on the Isle of Skye: Duisdale House Hotel . If you’d rather stay in a hotel, I’d recommend this one on the Isle of Skye for great prices.

Getting around the Isle of Skye

If you can, take a car to get around the Isle of Skye. You don’t want to be spending hours waiting for public transport, and to be honest, public transport on the island isn’t reliable.

In addition to this, buses don’t run frequently (they’re usually over an hour apart) and are known to drop you off in the middle of nowhere – and nowhere near where you’re trying to get to!

Don’t have a car? We rent our cars in the UK from  this company . They’re reliable, cheap and have car rentals all over the world! ➡  LOOK AT CAR HIRE PRICES IN THE UK NOW!

How to get to the Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye

🚗 HOW TO GET TO THE FAIRY POOLS BY CAR

Travelling to the fairy pools by car is part of the experience. The drive leading up to the Black Cuillin mountains is one of the most scenic and beautiful drives in Scotland. From the Skye Bridge, it’s around a 60-minute drive. Or, if you’re staying in Portree, the drive shouldn’t take you longer than 35 minutes.

The road to the fairy pools is a single stretch, dotted with lay-bys for you to dip into to avoid the oncoming traffic. After driving along this road for around 10 minutes (or more, depending on how many cars are on the road) you’ll reach the first car park.

➡ Need to hire a car for the fairy pools drive? Check out this company. We’ve hired cars from them all over the world – they’re cheap, reliable and have great customer service!

🚌 HOW TO GET TO THE FAIRY POOLS BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Unfortunately, at the time of writing this , there aren’t many public transport options to reach the fairy pools , and your best option is to either hire a car or order a taxi to reach them.

However, there is a bus that runs from Portree to the Sligachan Hotel. From this hotel, it’s a 5km hike to the fairy pools.

fairy pools skye walk

Fairy Pool opening times and prices

The fairy pools are free to visit, but you do need to pay for parking. When we visited last, it was £5 per car in the main car park.

But, there is a free car park a little further away from the fairy pools. Just ten minutes from the main car park, there’s one that doesn’t cost a thing to use. If you can get a space, it’s a great option for a budget day out!

As for opening times, the fairy pools are open at any time of day. Some visitors have enjoyed being around the pools for sunset or sunrise, and some like to take a picnic and enjoy lunch by the water. This is down to you.

Personally, I would make sure to be back at the car park before nightfall, as doing the fairy pools Skye walk whilst it’s dark may be tricky!

Parking at the fairy pools

There is a car park (which is about a 10-minute extra walk to the fairy pools) that is completely free to park in. There is a larger car park just a few minutes further downhill, but it is chaotic and will cost you £8 for a motorhome, or £5 for a car (2022 prices). But, they have toilets and they’re fairly easy to drive out of (once you’ve messed around parking for hours).

From the car park, expect at least a 30-minute fairy pool Skye walk, which is more like 40 minutes if you stop for photos.

fairy pools skye walk

Best time to visit the Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye

If you’d like to swim in the fairy pools, I recommend visiting in the summer months (June-August). Unless you like cold water swimming, any other time may be a little too cold (* practices Wim Hof breathing techniques *).

But if you simply want to visit the pools to enjoy the views, they’re a 365-day-a-year experience. In winter, you can expect snow on top of the Black Cuillen mountains, and a magical haze over the pools. It definitely adds to the dramatic fairy atmosphere!

We visited the fairy pools in August. Whilst it was busy, we still had our own space, and our own pool to swim in. Yes, it’s peak time, but they’re big enough for everyone to enjoy!

Fairy Pools Skye walk: Route description

How hard is the walk to the fairy pools from the car park.

Just how hard is the fairy pools walk? As much as I’d love to say the walk is accessible for all, it just isn’t. There are segments of rocky, uphill terrain, and stepping stones over rushing streams. Jumping from rock to rock (or walking through the stream) is needed at certain points of the walk.

Let’s be clear – the fairy pools walk is not strenuous, difficult, or challenging. But it’s also not a casual five-minute stroll from the car park. It’s an uphill hike, around 30-40 minutes from the starting point. If you are unable to use stepping stones, walk on uneven terrain, or on a gradual uphill incline for 30 minutes, the fairy pools walk may be a little tricky.

One thing that is certain – it’s impossible to get lost from the car park to the fairy pools. There’s really only one route (straight) and all of the other tourists visiting will be heading in the same direction.

See the photos below of the terrain on the fairy pools walk. 🧚🏼‍♂️ 👇🏼

🧚🏼‍♂️ Fairy Pools walk: FAQs

1) are the fairy pools in skye worth visiting.

Yes! The fairy pools on the Isle of Skye are so worth visiting. From the beautiful scenic views of the surrounding mountains to the crystal-clear natural waters of the pools, they are a unique (and magical) experience in Scotland.

2) Is it an easy walk to the Fairy Pools?

Yes, the walk from the car park to the first fairy pools is a fairly easy walk. However, it is around 30 minutes, and there are parts of loose gravel, uneven terrain and stepping stones. But anyone with moderate fitness levels can complete the fairy pools walk.

3) How long is the walk to the Fairy Pools Skye?

Dedicate at least half a day to spend for the fairy pools. The walk to the pools takes at least 30 minutes, and then you want enough time to swim and really soak up the magical atmosphere. 🧚🏼‍♂️

I wish we had a bit of extra time here (we had to leave because the sun was setting), so next time we visit, we’d head there a little earlier.

2) Why are they called fairy pools?

All over the Isle of Skye, you will see and hear of things being named after fairies and fairy legends. This is down to the story of Clan Mcleod of Dunvegan, the chief who married a fairy princess. Another tale states that the fairy pools attracted mythical creatures, such as selkies, who would transform into human form at night to soak in the light of the full moon. 🧚🏼‍♂️

Whether or not you believe the folklore, the crystalline waters with undertones of green and blue give enough reason to believe the pools of water are fairylike. When you visit, it is easy to see why they have been nicknamed ‘fairy pools’!

fairy pools skye walk

3) Is the fairy pools Skye walk difficult?

Not necessarily. To reach the fairy pools from the car park, it is around a 30-minute walk, with rocky terrains and stepping stones. Most will be able to complete this walk without any worry. If in doubt, you can stop at any point on the walk and admire the view of the mountains from where you are.

4) Can you walk to the fairy pools if you’re afraid of heights?

Yes, absolutely! There isn’t any part of the fairy pools Skye walk that is too high (coming from someone with a big fear of heights), and there are no sheer edges or drops .

Related post: Hiking the Old Man of Storr : a great hike for those with a fear of heights! 🏔️

5) What to pack for the Fairy Pools walk

As reaching the fairy pools is fairly easy, you don’t have to worry too much about packing anything in particular apart from your swimsuit and a towel. However, if you’re likely to walk off the track and explore more of the area, I would recommend:

  • A lightweight  waterproof jacket
  • Hiking boots  (that won’t slip) – these are my favourites for any kind of weather
  • An  umbrella
  • A  waterproof day bag
  • A  waterproof phone case  (which can also be used for  wild swimming  when it’s sunnier)
  • A  portable charger
  • Lots of layers
  • A GoPro  for waterproof camera footage
  • A  waterproof backpack cover
  • A chilly bottle  to keep your water at a drinkable temperature
  • A  Dry Robe , as it helps to keep you warm when entering and leaving the water (even if it’s raining!)
  • As well as using bug  spray , we have midge  repellent wristbands .

6) Do you need a car on the Isle of Skye?

If you can, take a car to get around the Isle of Skye. You don’t want to be spending hours waiting for public transport, and it isn’t that reliable.

Thank you so much for the detailed information, especially the photos of the terrain on the path! I’m planning a trip with my parents (in their 70’s) and grandfather (92), and most reviews are something like “it’s an easy walk, anyone can do it!”

Finding really practical details like yours has been incredibly difficult, very much appreciated! I begin to question if there’s really any point in us going to Skye since every site seems to require miles of rugged walking.

Yellowstone  a t a Glance

Why visit old faithful in yellowstone.

In 1872, the Old Faithful area prompted the creation of the world’s first national park. Three powerful eruptions over the last two million years have created Yellowstone, home to powerful hydrothermal features and volcanic energy.

Volcanic activity under the surface supercharges the groundwater, giving rise to 500 geysers in Yellowstone National Park, which boasts 60% of the world’s geysers. Only six are predictable enough for park rangers to post a daily eruption schedule. The all-time favorite is Old Faithful geyser, which draws crowds from every corner of the earth.

Old Faithful Geyser might be the star blowing water and steam over a hundred feet into the air. T hough 150 geysers are in a one-mile radius in an area called the Upper Geyser Basin. With Magna so close to the surface, the water turns to mist and boils away in the Upper Geyser Basin.

Nearby basins include Biscuit Basin and Black Sand Basin, which have a parking lot and walking trail from Old Faithful. Midway Basin features the show-stopper Grand Prismatic Spring, another must-see for any trip.

Guide to Yellowstone National Park

Visit the old faithful visitor education center.

For visitors wanting to learn more, visit the interpretive areas dedicated to the volcanic activity. With a Young Scientist exhibit room, kids can learn about geysers and volcanoes with hands-on models, like a geyser model. It is one of the top things to do at Old Faithful with kids.

The Old Faithful Visitor Education Center hosts free ranger programs throughout the year.

It is located next to Old Faithful Geyser. During the summer season, it is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. the rest of the year. Closed from November 1 to December 15 and mid-March to mid-April.

See Old Faithful Geyser Erupt

Old Faithful Geyser erupts on average every 90 minutes, though the range can be 50 to 127 minutes. Each eruption lasts at least a minute, sometimes over 5 minutes, and spews at least 3,700 gallons of water over a hundred feet into the air.

The schedule is located in front of the visitor center. If you require a seat, arrive at the viewing platform early. Old Faithful Geyser features a boardwalk and the eruption is visible from the Old Faithful Inn as well. It is one of the top things to do at Old Faithful with kids.

Check out other interesting geothermal features in the Upper Geyser Basin.

  • Hot Springs —Pools of hot water in an array of colors
  • Mudpots —Hot sulfuric acid breaks down the rock into a smelly clay that bubbles on the surface.
  • Fumaroles —A steam vent without a lot of water

Guide to Grand Teton National Park

Tour old faithful inn.

Opening its doors on June 1, 1904, Old Faithful Inn is a symbol of Yellowstone. Built of local forest products, a young architect, Robert Reamer, dreamed up the idea of bringing the forest indoors.

With a whimsical design and hand-crafted details, Old Faithful Inn is an architectural landmark and one of the top notable buildings in the U.S., according to the American Institute of Architects. Kids love the fact that it’s the largest log cabin hotel in the world.

Personally, it’s one of my favorite hotel stays of my career. After enjoying dinner in the rustic log cabin dining room, I sipped a cup of coffee and listened to a violinist fill the seven-story lobby with music. My kids played board games at a card table that dotted the common areas.

If not staying in the Old Faithful Inn, walk through or, better yet, take a free tour. They are offered several times a day, and no reservations are required. Inquire in the lobby for the next tour.

The second floor offers a coffee and cocktail bar. Grab a drink and head to the second-story outside balcony to see Old Faithful Geyser erupt. It is one of the top things to do at Old Faithful with kids.

Review of Old Faithful Inn

Spot wildlife in   yellowstone national park.

Some visitors enjoy the geothermal features, while others want to see animals. Yellowstone National Park offers some of the best animal viewing in the U.S. It is one of the top things to do at Old Faithful with kids.

I recommend Hayden Valley or Lamar Valley, along the river. The best time to spot animals is dawn and dawn when animals are most active. Check-in with the Park Rangers who know where animals frequent or take a guided tour.

  • Grizzly Bear
  • Bighorn Sheep

Bear Safety in Yellowstone

Yellowstone National Park features two types of bears: black bears and Grizzly bears. Knowing the difference is important since each species uses different behavior.

Park Rangers offer some guidelines to reduce bear encounters:

  • Hike in groups of 4 or more.
  • Make noise while hiking by wearing bear bells and talking.
  • Carry bear spray. Keep it accessible when hiking and know how to use it.
  • Keep campsites clean.

Bear spray is advised and can be rented in the park. Visit a visitor center or ranger station for more information.

To learn more, attend a ranger program in Yellowstone National Park. I did, and it’s a great way to learn more about bears. My boys loved the bear programs, and I felt more confident afterward.

Lake Yellowstone Hotel Review

Earn a junior ranger badge.

The Junior Ranger Program is the go-to program for families to learn more about a National Park Service site. It takes about two hours to complete. My kids love the badges that the Rangers present them with after they complete their booklet.

Kids love Yellowstone, and kids love animals, so buy a Junior Ranger booklet at the nearest bookstore. In Yellowstone, the Junior Ranger booklets are $3, but kids who complete their booklets get a patch. So it’s one of the top things to do at Old Faithful with kids.

Yellowstone National Park divides the Junior Ranger booklet into three age categories, with age-appropriate activities. Kids 4 to 7, 8 to 12 and 13 and older each complete as many activities as their age.

Old Faithful Visitor Education Center also offers a Young Scientist Patch Program. Buy the $5 booklet at the visitor center’s gift shop. The visitor center also checks out a pack of equipment needed to conduct experiments. This program is best suited for students spending a couple of days in the Old Faithful Area to finish it. This program is more in-depth than the Junior Ranger Booklet and will require more time, though patches and keychains are rewarded to those who finish.

Try to turn in your Junior Ranger booklet at Yellowstone’s National Park Junior Ranger Station, located near Madison on the west side of the park.

Guide to Junior Ranger Badges

History of yellowstone national park.

On March 1, 1872, Yellowstone National Park became the first national park in the world, an idea that has flourished worldwide. Yellowstone’s significance began long before. Approximately two million years ago, a supervolcano erupted in Yellowstone, forming a caldera, or basin. It is located at the center of Yellowstone National Park, measuring 45 miles across, and is now home to the largest concentration of geysers in the world.

The railroad arrived at the northern edge of the park in 1883. Then, the first roads started to bisect the park, allowing visitors more access to the geothermal features and animals. More people meant more buildings, with Lake Yellowstone Hotel and Old Faithful Inn a few of the surviving early lodges.

It was on the western frontier, so the U.S. Army built a fort to enforce the law and chase away poachers. You can see the old Fort Yellowstone at Mammoth Hot Springs.

Yellowstone is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting visitors from around the world.

Guide to Montana’s Glacier National Park

If it’s your first visit.

On my first visit to Yellowstone National Park, I made every newbie mistake.

  • Didn’t make reservations.
  • I camped in the same campground and didn’t move around the park.
  • Didn’t research.

When the time came to plan another trip, I wanted to see more of the park. I planned a Grand Tour, much like the first visitors did over 100 years ago.

I started in one area and explored it before relocating to another. It worked out great, minimizing the driving and maximizing the enjoyment.
