A true experience!

I have been to this festival for the past three years with different groups of friends and family, one year camping in campfest, one year in a hotel and this year in the glamping of the festival site. The festival promises a good wide range of artists in each years line up and I've never had a bad time here I have to admit after going for the third year in a row I will never do camping at the site again it is really tough going with that many ppl, cold showers and in that heat, but I can say that I'm glad I have, had some great times! I would recommend it to anyone Benicassim as a place is general is beautiful! There are some real cracking places to eat here too! I would love to see what the place looks like when the festival is not on because it is really a lovely place and the locals are really lovely!

We brought our 3 children aged 13, 12 and 10 to the festival, this was the first festival they have been to. We all had a great time, the atmosphere was really friendly and as a family we had no worries at all. I had read a lot about pickpockets before we came so we just made sure that we carried minimum amounts of cash and phones with us. The only downfall was the price for drinks. 3 euros for a small bottle of water is pretty bad.

Very friendly and well organised festival. Beats English festivals by a million miles. The drinks ticket system works wonders and saves all queuing time. The people that go to this festival are really happy go lucky people and just want to have a good time - never any problems. This was my second visit to Benicassim Festival and it won't be my last. Although I have never camped at the festival site - I have stayed in the local town Orpesa del mar and this time I stayed in the much closer Intur Orange hotel. The only downside I have experienced is the queue for the wristband exchange last year 2015 but 2016 seemed alot better. Also the end of night taxi queue was around 2 hour long wait! Taxi's seem limited in the area with this amount of festival goers so I recommend alternative transport. Also if staying in Orpesa del mar the shuttle bus drops you off a half hour walk away from the festival so is a bit of a rip off!

We have been going to FIB for the last 10 years we still love it. There have been some changes over the years and the line up is definitely declining (which festival line up isn't - Adele at Glastonbury, please!!!) but it is still the greatest festival going. Sun, Sea, Beach - We know it is there but we never get to see any of it as we are up all night. The Festival is on an old disused car park at the side of a very busy road, so again if you're thinking a nice picturesque festival on the beach think again. It is terrible to get to - the Police make you walk the long way round down a lane called Gypsy Lane, which is where you might like to purchase illicit items - and in the soaring heat it is a killer. I've heard camping is like being at a refugee camp in the sahara desert without the facilities, but if you like sleeping in a dust laden hovel, waking up in 100 degree heat with a massive hangover - then go for it. The drinks are extortionately priced and have gone up this year - 9 euros for a litre of gassy lager or 9 euros for short and mixer, that when you remove the ice is non existent - so I suggest you bring your own - but don't get caught. So why do I still love FIB - I've no idea but I'll be back next year for our 11th anniversary that's certain. Hasta la Vista

If you like very good music, hot weather, beautiful beaches and cheap beers this festival is for you! The organisation is amazing: cheap bus system all night long, no waiting for toilets or drinks and no delay for concerts. I would definitly recommand to anyone going there, those 4 days were awesome! Cheers fibers!

If you buy a bus ticket on line from Danespo for the shuttle bus to the Festival - make sure the copy of the order sent to you says CONFIRMED not PENDING. I paid in advance and the money was taken from my bank but despite requests to the company to update the order to reflect this - we had no joy. On arrival at their office in Oropesa a very rude man insisted that payment had not been made as the order stated "pending" and insisted that we pay 55e in cash for a second ticket. We did but from another office!! We finally got a refund once we got home and got my bank involved.

Felicitaciones Tours Festival!!!

7 must-know tips for traveling to an international music festival

From Coachella in California to Tomorrowland in Belgium, there are some incredible music festivals all over the world.

But international travel is tough even at the best of times, and it's even tougher when carrying all the gear you need for a multi-day camping trip in a field with thousands of other festival goers.

If you plan on attending an international music festival next year, here are seven must-know tips to help you plan a stress-free trip.

Take Photos Of Your ID

Theft at festivals is rife, and you never know when you might lose your wallet or phone.

Having backup copies of your ID makes getting an emergency passport to travel home much easier. Take a screenshot of the details page of your passport and upload it to the cloud so it's safe no matter what goes missing.

Bonus tip: Never leave your passport in your tent if you're camping at a festival. It's safer kept in your bag on your person or in a secure locker if they are available.

Create a Travel Itinerary

Even if you don't know exactly what you'll be doing, you should have a general itinerary of where you'll be on what dates for your loved ones back home. This is an important safety precaution and narrows down your whereabouts if someone doesn't hear from you.

If you're planning on moshing out in a field where cell reception is bad, let your loved ones know that they might not hear from you for a couple of days and not to worry.

"While you're planning your travel itinerary, make a daily schedule to make sure you see as many bands as you can. Festivals are a great opportunity to find new music, but you need a solid plan to make the most of every stage." – Harrison Alley from Student of Guitar

Plan For The Weather

The Mad Cool Festival in Spain is usually hot and sunny; Glastonbury in the UK has been known to turn into a muddy swamp from torrential rain.

Wherever you're doing, plan for the weather. Will you need waterproofs or suncream? Warm layers or cooling fabrics? But no matter where you go and what the weather forecast might be, always pack comfortable, sturdy walking shoes.

Know The Local Laws

Every country has a different set of rules, so make sure you know what common laws might be different in your country. What's legal in Canada might not be legal in the Netherlands, so be mindful of what you can and can't do.

For example, most states in the US have laws against open alcohol containers in public. However, in the UK, no blanket laws prohibit drinking in public. The last thing you want is to get into trouble with the police on your festival trip, so be mindful of differences.

Don't Bring Valuables

It is tough packing light to travel abroad, but you won't be able to keep your valuables safe at a festival. Leave your expensive camera at home, and take an old phone if you have one lying around.

Most festivals have secure lockers available for rent, but they book up fast, and anything left in your tent while you're listening to music is at risk of getting stolen.

"It's so tempting to take a great camera to snap pictures of your favorite bands, but leave the valuables at home and focus on enjoying the incredible music. You won't miss your tech when you're watching your favorite band with ten thousand other fans!" – Michael L. Moore from Devoted to Vinyl

Make a Money Plan

Many festivals are now cashless, so you'll need a plan for spending money while you're there. International credit cards are one of the safest options – they're easy to block if they get stolen, and you'll get an automatic exchange to different currencies.

But even if the festival you're attending is cashless, it's always a good idea to have some cash for emergencies. Whether it's an emergency cab ride or your card stops working, it's better to be safe than sorry.

While you're in planning mode, look up the general costs of food and drink at the festival. Food vendors and bars will have standardized pricing to keep things fair, so it should be easy to plan a daily spending limit.

Travel Light

Did you know that many international festivals have ready-stocked tents available for international travelers to rent? At the Download Festival in the UK, you can get pop-up tents with beds, sleeping bags, pillows, and some accessories to save you carrying all that gear on a plane.

"It won't be long until you won't have to pack for festivals at all. Virtual festivals inside video games make events accessible to people all over the world, and you can enjoy them from the comfort of your home. Lavapalooza was held inside Minecraft in 2018, and thousands of people attended! " – Vlad Susanu from Game Clubz

Out here in the real world, if you do plan on bringing your own festival camping gear, pack as lightly as you can. No matter what festival you go to, you'll have miles of walking to do and carrying a lot of gear is tough.

Which Festival Are You Attending?

There are mind-blowing music festivals in countries all over the world, each catering to different music styles and tastes. It can feel stressful planning international travel for a music festival, but with a little planning, it's much easier than you think. And there's no better way to experience your favorite bands!

To visit a country and meet its people during a festival can be an experience second to none: you will bring home not just life-long memories of colour, music, dancing and fun but also a richer understanding of the traditions and beliefs that make the country what it is. Join one of our small group tours during a festival and experience a country in a whole new light. Our expert local tour leaders will take you under the skin of your destination, often enabling access to parts of a festival visitors wouldn't usuall see.  In Asia, experience India's Pushkar Camel Fair or the vibrant Holi, sometimes called the Festival of Colours, which takes place over two days each year, celebrating the victory of good over evil - and covering everyone and everything in wet paint along the way!

Elsewhere in Asia you could experience the three traditional sports of Mongolia (wrestling, archery and horse riding) at the annual  Nadaam Festival , or witness the spectacular colours and centuries-old religious customs of Bhutan’s  Thimpu Festival , or immerse yourself in the little-known mountain festivals of south-west China’s Guizhou and Yunnan provinces.

Africa is also rich in tradition and festivals abound, perhaps the most famous being  Timkat  in Ethiopia, celebrating Epiphany and re-enacting the ritual of Baptism. In the Americas you can take part in Brazil’s most spectacular extravaganza, the Rio Carnival, or witness the ancient Inca Inti Raymi festival in Peru. New to Explore? 5 International Festival Travel Tips You Need To Know

Avatar photo

Festival season is right around the corner, and while the USA is home to some wild events, some of the best festivals in the world are located outside of the country’s borders.

If you’re planning on attending an international festival, these are 5 international festival travel tips you need to know that could help you stay safe, save money, and make the most out of your festival experience.

5 International Festival Travel Tips That You Need To Know

1. Take Photos Of Your ID

It may seem redundant to take photos of your identification, but you never know when this could come in handy. Having extra copies of your ID can save you a massive headache if something were to happen to your ID while you are away. Trust me, I’m speaking from personal experience.

In 2022, I travelled to the USA from Canada to go to EDC Las Vegas , and we made a road trip out of it – visiting all of the western states along the way. The trip was going great until we had our car broken into in San Francisco.

Among the items stolen was my purse, with my wallet and passport in it. I did not take photos of any of my ID. This made the process of travelling back to Canada more difficult, and the process of getting new identification was far more difficult as well.

So, don’t make the mistakes I made. Take photos!

Bonus tip: Do research on the places you will be visiting to educate yourself on the common crimes that occur in that city, such as car break-ins in San Francisco.

2. Make An Itinerary

Similarly to the first tip, you never know when making an itinerary will be useful. This is a practice I have had since I started travelling in general.

Sending a rough breakdown of where you will be and what you will be doing to a few close people in your life is a great safety precaution.

If you are attending an event that is known for having poor cell phone reception, include that in the itinerary to give friends and family peace of mind if they cannot get a hold of you.

EDC Mexico - EDM Maniac

3. Explore New Talent

Chances are you’re going to see a lot of names on the festival line-up that you haven’t seen before. One of the best parts about international festivals is diving into a new culture with new sounds that you may not hear back home. If you are looking at the line-up and highlighting the few names that you recognize, you never know what you could be missing.

My favourite way to explore new artists is by going onto Spotify and seeing if the festival has a playlist curated with all of the artists on it. If not, just pick a few names and give them a listen.

4. Look Into The Laws

Everywhere in the world operates differently, by a different set of rules. What may be legal in Canada, may not be in the USA. What may be legal in the Netherlands may not be in India.

There is no harm in doing a little bit of looking into the country you will be travelling to and learn about your rights. No one wants to have an encounter with law enforcement at home, and especially not when you’re abroad.

5 International Festival Travel Tips That You Need To Know

5. Make a money plan

Is the festival that you are going to attend cashless? If yes, I recommend not using your international cards to spend money at the event.

Instead, you can save money on fees by buying a preloaded credit card in the country you’re travelling to. Additionally, you should be familiar with the exchange rate, so that you are more aware of the actual amount that things cost in your home currency. Lastly, always ensure that you have enough cash on hand for emergencies!

In conclusion, attending an international festival is an exciting adventure, but it’s important to prepare in advance to ensure a safe and fun experience.

By taking photos of your identification, making an itinerary, exploring new talent, looking into the laws, and making a money plan, you’ll be well-equipped to make the most out of your festival experience.

A relative booked through this travel agency for her 10 year wedding anniversary. We were given the name and phone number to contact in order to make reservations. I actually stopped by in person and talked to Jose (travel agent) He gave us all the information we needed for our trip. I called every pay check to make a small deposit and made the remaining payment towards the end. Through out our engangment he made our travel arrangments very pleasant and was very helpful. I now plan to make future travel agents with him.

My parents have been booking their vacations with Joel for years now So it was only natural that my husband and I booked our honeymoon with him. We ended up choosing Secrets Akumal in Riviera Maya, Mexico based off his recommendation. It has been all we have wanted out of our honeymoon. His recommendation was perfect. I'm so glad we had Joel help us.

My mom has booked all of her travel arrangements through Jose for years now. This year, she planned a family trip to Cancun to celebrate her retirement and she suggested that we all book through Jose at Festival Travel. All 14 of us agreed, we made our deposit, and everyone paid their balance prior to the deadline except for me!!! I was caught up with end-of-year Senior activities with my oldest daughter so all the details related to this trip were temporarily put on the back burner. Needless to say, because I did not pay the remaining balance prior to the due date I initially lost my $600 deposit. Jose called me a few days later with GREAT news! He didn't want to see me lose my deposit and didn't want me to have to miss out on the family trip. He mentioned that he had made some calls and was able to offer me the following: he offered me a much lower rate than what I was originally quoted AND he was able to apply my deposit toward my balance. I ended up quite happy saving a ton of money! Praise God!!! Jose is very honest, ethical, and a pleasure to work with.

Jose treats you like family. He always works for you on getting the best deals that's why my whole family always books with him. If you're looking to travel and want a hassle free experience give them a call.

Truly one of the best trips I’ve ever had. It was my first time ever doing a solo trip. Himanshu gave us an itinerary and a list of good traveling tips for Egypt months in advance. He is very organized and responsive so I never had any concerns. Everything was already taken care of. All I had to do was show up. The scenes in Egypt were breathtaking and I saw places that I never thought I’d see.

Had a great time in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons. Land in Salt Lake City & the rest of the trip is taken care by BLGT.. you have absolutely nothing to worry about.. logistics, campsite booking, tickets, planning is all done by them. We had a great guide with us through out the trip. Would definitely be going with BLGT in future.

The trip was to the Galapagos and it was wonderful Quito was also a beautiful City.

This was a trip of a lifetime, been wanting to do this for a long time. All planning done right and price was great can’t wait for my next trip, unfortunately I can only do one a year

Had a great experience through BLGT recently in Alaska; appreciated the trip leaders’ ability to handle logistics so you could focus on the experience and having fun. It was just like traveling with a group of friends, with the added bonus of the itinerary being all taken care of.

I have had some of the most adventurous and memorable trips with this group. I was initially apprehensive about traveling with a group of strangers, but in retrospect, it was the BEST decision I ever made. In a short span of two months, I have been on two international travel adventures with the group- Costa Rica and Belize. That bears testament to the meticulous and skillful planning of the group coordinator – Himanshu. The trip itineraries are very well organized, with a perfect mix of fun and adventure activities. Himanshu is friendly, accommodating, has a positive attitude and most importantly, he is very good about adapting to the group dynamics and making adjustments along the way – which in turn makes it a memorable and pleasant experience for everyone. I am very glad I took the leap of faith and joined this group. I have met like-minded fellow travelers, made new friends and have had the experiences of a lifetime! I would highly recommend traveling with this group!

COSTA RICA with BLGT was one of the most amazing trips that I have ever been on!! Imagine getting 17 people together (most of whom have never previously met), taking us on an adventure of hiking a volcano, zip-lining through the rain forest, and then a Catamaran ride along the Pacific coast and making sure we were all safe and enjoyed ourselves…that describes the trip that Himanshu put together!! I was thoroughly impressed with how well-organized and well-thought-out the trip was. He maximized our time so that we could do and see as much as we could in 5 days. I highly recommend this group for anyone who wants an active vacation in some of the most beautiful parts of the world. The experience will leave you wanting more — I am definitely traveling with this group again and so should you!!

The Belize Trip was Unbelizeable! First time traveling solo and might I say I was NOT disappointed! The group members were Awesome and Himanshu’s preparedness was on point! There was no dull moment. Definitely left the trip with new found friends!! I’m looking forward to future Bucket List adventures!

I just finished Belize trip . Beautiful country, great hikes, amazing snorkeling, and nice people. The trip organized very well, and I had good times with the group, I am a solo traveler but I found its nice to be in a group with people I never met before and had a lot of fun with them.

My first ever international Meetup travel excursion was with BLGT to Costa Rica. To summarize, I easily met up with everyone at organized meeting spots, had a safe, comfortable, and adventurous experience with a patient, organized leader, saw more of an entire country than I ever thought was possible in 5 days, and left hugging my new-found friends goodbye with memories I will never forget. I would highly recommend a trip with Himanshu and Bucket List Group Travel for anyone looking to explore, see new places, and tour with like-minded people who love traveling. I went into this trip a complete stranger to everyone going, and came out with 16 new incredible friends and the experience of a lifetime. The trips are short, sweet, economical, and will leave you refreshed with a new perspective on our beautiful world and the amazing people that inhabit it. Thank you, Himanshu for an incredible experience! I can’t wait to travel with the Bucket List group again!

Went to Costa Rica with this group and had a great time. If you like to pack in as much adventure as you can on your vacation this is the group to travel with! Very well organized, very comfortable accommodations. Will definitely try to go with them again!

I’m so glad I went to Iceland with Himanshu! He planned very well and we had a great time.

Iceland trip was my first trip with BLGT. It was one of the best trips I ever had. Himanshu is really a superman: very well organized, very capable, creative and considerable. We had a lot of fun. The trip combines adventure and leisure very well. In the meantime, you get a chance to know many new friends who share the same interests. I highly recommend this group to those who love adventure. And I am looking forward to traveling with this group in the future.

My first trip was Jamaica and I had a great fun trip. My second trip was Iceland and it was great and very memorable trip. Himanshu planned the trip very well and organized fashion. He tries to accommodate everyone. I highly recommend this group. Looking forward to traveling with this group again!!

One of the best trips of my life was with BLGT. My friend and I took a leap of faith to travel with folks from this group and we were more than glad we did. Himanshu planned the entire trip (9 days road trip, camping, and hiking on the west coast) made sure we not only stayed on schedule but also enjoyed. I highly recommend this group. Get acquainted with members to save you time as well.

I went to Yosemite and had a blast. Himanshu is very organized and capable. He’s got tremendous energy and is an all around fun and entertaining guy. Loved the trip and the my fellow travelers. I’m going to Iceland where I’ll meet back up with my Yosemite peeps.

Jamaica trip was my first trip with this group. Himanshu planned this trip very well down to minute detail. As with may trips not everything works out as planned. When this happended Himanshu flowed with the group dynamic. He respected everyone and tried to accommodate everyone’s requests and still maintain schedule. I will be travelling with this group in the future and recommend you do to.

This was an amazing trip. There were a lot of planning involved which later I noticed with a lot of intricate details of location, timing & weather conditions, etc. and Himanshu did a fantastic job organizing and planning for the entire trip! I will definitely travel with him again and I will definitely recommend others to his travel adventures in the future. Thank you Himanshu for everything 🙂

I highly recommend Himanshu planned trips! My first trip to Yosemite was one of the best-guided trips I’ve been on. He’s organized, creative, experienced, knowledgeable, experienced and always felt safe. I am looking forward to Iceland trip to bring in the new year to be united with Yosemite group and some new.

I travelled with this group in west coast and great time. We covered all the places we planned. Highly recommend .

This is fun group, really had a great time. I went to Hawaii, Rhode island, North Carolina road trips and many other camping events…highly recommended.

I participated in a couple of trips this year with this group and both events surpassed my expectations. Himanshu is an outstanding coordinator, whose attention to details on the trips is just remarkable. Very accommodating, encouraging, with a positive attitude. Both trips (Havasu Falls/Bryce/Zion, Old Rag & Kilimanjaro) were trips that I will treasure for the rest of my life. I highly encourage joining this group if you reopen some adventure and meeting new people.

I went on a couple of trips with this group including to Acadia National Park. Had a great time. I Recommend Joining.

This is a great meetup group and Himanshu- organizer of this group has some really cool meetup events. People who are really into adventure should check out this meetup. Himanshu is a great guy who takes care of everyone while travelling in group and plans very well in advance.

I did Yosemite and Sequoia Parks hiking trip with this club and plan to join the group for Iceland and Machu Picchu next year. The leader Himanshu is a great organizer with the perfect combination of physical challenges (Yosemite Half Dome hike!), leisurely, scenic drives (Kings Canyon), and even sunset photo ops.

I did a couple of trips (Yosemite Halfdome and Hawaii) with Himanshu. Being part of this group was a tremendously wonderful experience! All my companions were so friendly and helpful. Special credit goes to Himanshu, our skillful and considerate group leader, who knew just what to do! I highly recommend this group to my family and friends. My next trip will be to Iceland in December and Peru next year with this group!

I went on the White Oak trail hike right when I first moved to dc and was trying to get acclimated to the area. It was THE BEST decision I ever made, I made great friends that I still talk to daily, and I got to get out and explore new parts of Virginia that I never knew existed. The trips are so well organized and Himanshu will literally go out of his way to make sure you have THE best time! 10 out of 10 would recommend any of these trips!

I did a couple of trips with this group and always had a great time!

The summer 2017 solar eclipse camping trip was fantastic. The trip was very well organized, the group very friendly, and we even managed to prevent partial cloud cover from interfering with our view of the eclipse

Everything as advertised. I went to the Grand Canyon and Havasuipai fall with this group. We camped and saw the great Outdoor. It was an experience I won’t forget. The trip was well organized and attracts amazing group of people. The destinations speak for themselves. Try his short day hikes!

Its always been fun ! Thanks Himanshu .

This is a friendly group that is up for fun adventures with new and old members alike! I’ve been on several domestic trips this year and am looking forward to more domestic and international ones next year. Himanshu does a great job organizing the itineraries and making changes for unexpected circumstances. If anyone has specific questions or wants more information- send me a message and I’d be happy to share more of my experiences.

I am glad to be a part of this group.

This is a fun group which always comes up with interesting outdoor trips to suit people from all walks of life!

Wonderful trip with very nice people.

Costa Rica was my first trip with BLGT. Pura Vida! I really enjoyed it. Himanshu did a great job at planning, organizing, and leading our group of 17 people. It was a maximum adventure packed in a handful of days.

My traveling patterns used to be a full long 4 weeks of adventures visiting many countries and doing a lot of self planning. Since this is no longer an option, I discovered a gold mine – Himanshu does all the work to provide exactly what my traveling appetite needs in a reasonable short period of time. Himanshu enjoys what he does and that’s why he will be very successful at this. He is very patient with everyone, cares about the enjoyment of the group he leads and listens to everyone’s suggestions. It’s hard to manage the travel needs of a large group but with Himanshu the task is so simple. The other advantage of traveling with him is that he is a professional media editor so you don’t have to worry about spending time for pictures. Just enjoy your trip while he takes memorable pictures and videos even using his drone. I’d definitely recommend traveling with Himanshu and I will be looking forward to more trips with the group. Outstanding job H!

Northern Lights Alaska was my first trip with this group. Trip was amazing 😊👍. Himanshu did a great job. Did lot of my bucket list, Northern Lights, Dog sledding, Trans Alaska pipeline, Hot Springs and Snow shoeing

Since the very first Festival International de Louisiane in 1986 photographer Philip Gould has captured moments that show how the unique festival has grown to become one of the largest non-ticketed Francophone events in the world. We have partnered with him to showcase some his most memorable moments from years past.  We hope you enjoy this 30 year photo retrospective by Philip Gould.

"I have photographed Festival International nearly every year since its debut in 1987 to the present. It has been an honor to be at the birth, to bear witness to its growth, and to document its long, rich life.

Festival International has done more to transform Lafayette from a city still steeped in Cajun and Creole tradition to one that connects creatively to the entire world. Each year, the Festival invites performers from nearly every continent to perform downtown in what is effectively our village.

With this presentation you will find for the next thirty days a different image taken at Festival. The photographs run consecutively, one a day, from 1987 to last year’s event in 2015.

If the festival has been part of your life over the years, I hope the photographs will trigger fond memories for you. If you have not yet had the chance to see it for yourself, I hope these images will inspire you to get in a car, on a train, or an airplane and come join us."

– Philip Gould, Photographer

Tuning drums by fire. Members of the Rwanda Master Drummers heat tune their drums before performing at the first Festival International de Louisiane in July 1987. Their performance was at the very least an eye opener for Lafayette. The notion of tuning drums by fire revealed just how connected these master drummers were to the elements.

One other note, several years after their performance Rwanda became embroiled in a deadly civil war between Hutus and Tutsi's. The fact that some members of the group may have not survived this conflict was profoundly sad. I only hold the gratitude that they were able to share their talents and open our ears and eyes to their faraway world beforehand.

Members of the Assemblee du Pays Normand in France also performed the first year of the Festival in 1987. Their traditional performance attire was suited for the chilly Normandy climate. Nonetheless, members performed in full cold weather woolens to share musical customs with us that first year — in July.

Burundi Master Drummers perform in Lafayette for the first time in 1989. Like their counterparts from neighboring Rwanda, these folks also had a strong tradition of performance with traditional drums.

I took one of my favorite festival photographs then which showed a drummer fully airborne striking the drum from peak height.

One meaningful element of Festival International de Louisiane was the opportunity it offered for local musicians to perform in an international context. Case in point, iconic Cajun fiddler Dennis Mc Gee performed at the first festival in 1987 backed up by partner Sady Courville and long-time student Michael Doucet.

Festival International was not simply about music. It also provided opportunities for folks to see art works from here and afar. Louisiana landscape painter Elemore Morgan was a good example. At an event entitled Tatooed Walls in 1990, he joined other artists painting in real time as his efforts were projected on a large outdoor wall. The event was sponsored by Lafayette Artists Alliance.

The most stirring personal festival moment occurred during the Saturday promenade in 1991. I had perched myself on the roof of the old City Hall to photograph the parade as it headed up Jefferson Street. When I saw a procession of New Orleans Mardi Gras Indians followed by Burundi Master Drummers followed by News Orleans’ Plastic Systems Band, each group with boy scout holding identifying banners, it felt like the exotic world was on parade in our village.

Echasseurs de Namur, Belgian stilt walkers were also a treat to witness as they conducted their battles on stilts in 1989, to be the last stilt walker standing.

I also was able to photograph one stilt walker posing with a kora player from Mali.

John Mayall made a festival appearance in 1990 jamming on stage with Lafayette’s famed guitarist Sonny Landreth. It was a treat to see this British bluesman perform live. I remember him from long ago when I was growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mayall channeled the mainline of blues from Mississippi to Chicago across to the UK and back as did many other British musicians of that time. As he played along with Sonny, Mayall seemed to be goading him to dig deeper into the soul of his slide guitar. At that moment John Mayall was both master and rascal.

A Beasely’s Puppets performed in 1990 at the Place des Enfants. I loved how this woman created another alternate universe with her cape, all there for children's imaginations.

I still remember the Ondekoza Drummers from Japan. When they performed in 1992 for Bach Lunch at the old Lafayette Natural History museum, I remember feeling transported in my imagination to Japan. This scene offers no clue the group is performing in south Louisiana. The setting feels instead like the ancient gardens of a Japanese shrine.

In 1992, I watched his compelling group Ra Ra Machine from Haiti transport the audience through the musical paces of their Caribbean home. Yet through it all, one could see in the keyboardist’s dancing braids, the group’s rhythmic energy.

Another telling moment came in 1996 when Cape Verde superstar Cesaria Evora performed at the Festival. She stood simply on stage in bare feet and flowing dress as she sang.

It was only after I looked to my left and saw a young lady entranced with her heroine, was the moment complete. She was bonding with Cesaria all while holding her CD booklet close.

Fanfare Zebaliz from France performs at the 1996 Festival. The group combined old time jazz with a visual sense of zaniness all done with French panache. One day, the group performed for French Immersion Students at Plantation Elementary School in Lafayette. I enjoyed watching as the saxophonist infused her creative energy and joy to some of the students listening.

In 1996 like all years before and after, food vendors would stir vats of Crawfish, Red beans and rice all staples on sale for a good timing diet.

Hunter Hayes was only five years old when he made his first festival appearance in 1997. He was already exhibiting the presence and charisma of the star he was to become.

Since the Festival’s beginning, French immersion school students have carried the flags of participating countries through the streets of Lafayette and onto the main stage. As a group, they formed an multinational backdrop in this photograph for the 1998 opening ceremonies.

Food was a vital component both for festival goers and performers. John Smith was a leader of the Bubbas in 1999, an ad hoc group that cooked for performers backstage.

Paul Hernandez of Pouparts Bakery in Lafayette, turned french bread into alligator-sized performance art at his food booth.

Cajun songstress Christine Balfa leads a group dance lesson in the Fais Do Do tent before live performances began in 1997.

In 2002 Joel Savoy of the Red Stick Ramblers performed in period dress to an overflowing crowd gathered on Vermilion Street to see them.

Crowds at Festival International have always been spirited.

Performers inspire them and they in turn return the favor. In 1993 South Africa’s Mahotella Queens led crowds through a spirited performance of their music.

New Orleans has been well represented over the years. In 2006, both Allen Toussaint and Irma Thomas performed for packed crowds.

A member of the Dragon Knight Stilt Walkers connects with a young girl in 2006 as both walk down Jefferson Street.

Cajun fiddler Louis Michot joins Las Erindiras a mariachi group from San Antonio, TX at an after hours multi cultural jam session at the Blue Moon in 2008.

Gangbe Brass Band, from the west African country of Benin, was compelling to see and hear. In their concert, the group created a musical space where the windy sounds of the Sahara desert could blend with western jazz and big band melodies. In effect their music connected the Saraha to New Orleans.

Entryway to Marche du Monde on festival grounds with the Federal Courthouse in the background. The archway, designed and painted by Pat Juneau, framed the scene where the hustle of a world market whirled under the architectural gaze of an oz-like palace.

A member of Ilê Ayê, a group from Brazil performs for the 2009 Festival. I happened to be up close to the stage as she crawled across the stage. I enjoyed being that close to a singer who was connecting to a huge crowd as she sang.

The group Mucca Pazza makes the turn in the festival promenade from Vermilion on to Jefferson Street. Over the years, this short parade has been a favorite event. It is where the serendipitous energy of numerous performers gets channeled onto a single street. The promenade passes quickly and often dissolves intro street performance and theater. I found Mucca Pazza fun to watch. They embodied an unlikely blend of High School Band, Balkan gypsy music and psychedelics.

Ray Maggie of the Subdudes squeezes his accordion in 2006 in front of a vast crowd and mural by Robert Dafford on a facing wall of the Children’s Museum.

Theodore Lolo Beabrun lead singer of the Haitian group Boukman Eksperyans, kept the 2011 audience and himself under a trance as he performed from a space deep in his Haitian soul.

Festival goers in 2013 at the intersection of Jefferson and Vermillion Streets. I have always enjoyed seeing the hordes of people gathered downtown during festival. Capturing everyone in kinetic connectedness as they moved through the square was also an enjoyable challenge.

A group of young dancers momentarily take to the air doing an Irish jig over parking lot puddles in 2015. It is the sort of serendipity that festival organizers can’t program per se, but which is key to the spontaneity of the four-day event.
