Manila Field Trip Itinerary and the Metro’s Top Tourist Spots

Would you know I learned something from Wikipedia today! I learned the tagalog word for “fort” and it’s “moog” as in Moog ng Santiago for Fort Santiago 🙂 Hehehe

Funny  I knew “Fuerza” it’s Spanish translation but not the tagalog .Why I did not know of this back in my elementary studies, I have no idea lol. Oh well, thanks to Wiki, now I know.

Why this sudden interest in forts you may be thinking. Well, this blog post is about our Manila Field Trip and of course no decent Manila fieldtrip is complete without visiting these 4 popular sites: The Walled City of Intramuros, Fort Santiago, Luneta and yep I’m including SM MOA heheheh.

If you are looking for a cheap Manila tour, you don’t need to avail of a day tour package because you can do it on your own. Plan your trip itinerary with these suggestions.

Manila Top Tourist Spots and Destinations

There are many top tourist destinations in Manila which you visit for their cultural, historical and/or entertainment and recreational value. Historical and Cultural includes those sites mentioned above as well as the old buildings and institutions like the Manila Watchtower, the National Museum, the National Library, Museong Pambata, Binondo and more. The entertainment or recreations must-see places are Manila’s Oceans Park, Star City, Manila Zoo, Divisoria, Greenhills, SM Mall of Asia, Malate or Makati (for night life) and more. Even on a normal day, these places are teeming with local and sometimes foreign tourists.

Tour the walled city of Manila and visit the 7 churches inside Intramuros especially Manila Cathedral and San Agustin Church (a UNESCO Heritage Site). If you love taking snapshots of old buildings then Intramuros is a must-see for you. Entrance fee is free. If you want to check out the San Agustin Museum there is a P100 entrance fee.

Pay a visit to Rizal’s last ‘home’ in Fort Santiago. Follow his footsteps as he was led from his prison cell to his execution in Bagumbayan, now Luneta. Once in Luneta you can gaze at the giant statue of Datu Lapu- Lapu and have fun found looking for your province in the Philippine Relief Map.

If all those history lessons muddled your brain, you can go right after to Star City or SM Moa or both to relax or even all the way to Greenhills! (yep this is what we did since at that time there was the COD Christmas show and display in this popular shopping and bargain haven.)

All these can be done on one day Manila trip! =) Actually you can add more sites, we limit ourselves to those sites since we are also planning on hunting some great and cheap buys in Greenhills later that day (which we did by the way =).

LAGUNA ROAD TRIP: Budget Travel Guide & Itinerary

LAGUNA ROAD TRIP: Budget Travel Guide & Itinerary

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

If you think the grass is always greener on the other side, it’s probably time to have a closer look at your lawn because maybe, just maybe, it is greener than you think.

Laguna is one of the provinces we often overlook partly because its edges aren’t laced with pearly beaches. Joke’s on us because paradise isn’t always made of sand and saltwater. Much of Laguna is almost untouched, still covered with dense rainforests concealing several magnificent waterfalls. Many of its historic towns retain many pieces of its glorious past. And its cuisine showcases some of the best of the Southern Tagalog region.

Laguna is actually an ideal road trip destination. From the Seven Lakes of San Pablo to the glorious cascades of Luisiana to the carving tradition of Paete, Laguna has a lot to offer. The best part: It’s within close proximity of Manila.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Understanding Laguna

During the Spanish era, Laguna was officially called La Provincia de la Laguna de Bay. “Laguna” literally means lake, referring to the country’s largest lake, which got its name from the town of Bay. Together with Metro Manila and the province of Rizal, the lake serves as its northern boundary, while Cavite, Batangas, and Quezon border it in the west, south, and east respectively.

Rizal Shrine in Calamba

Laguna is most famous as the birthplace of Dr. Jose Rizal, the country’s most celebrated hero, whose death on 30 December 1896 strengthened the yearning for Philippine independence and inspired many other revolutionary leaders.

For our non-Filipino readers, locals here speak Tagalog, but virtually everyone understands English so language barrier won’t be a problem during your visit.

How to Get to Laguna from Manila

One of the most easily accessible provinces, Laguna is linked to Manila by two major thoroughfares: the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and the Manila East Road. The former is the better choice if you’re going to the western side (Calamba, Sta. Rosa, Binan) and the latter for the northwestern side (Mabitac, Siniloan, Pangil).

Several bus companies ply routes to its many towns and cities, with San Pablo City, Calamba, Los Banos, Santa Rosa, and the capital Sta. Cruz as the main transportation hubs. You can find their terminals in Cubao and LRT Buendia (Pasay).

SAIL unit that Chevrolet lent us for the weekend

The thing with Laguna is that most of its attractions are spread out, located so far apart from one another, that while public commute is definitely possible, it can be an exhausting effort. For the longest time, we’ve traveled Laguna that way, but this year, we were able to bring our own car on three occasions and it makes a lot more sense. Roads in Laguna are mostly paved and it’s actually an easy drive, so sedans can handle the journey really well. Not only is having your own ride more comfortable, it also turned out way cheaper than taking public transpo.

Just two weeks ago, we went on a road trip to Luisiana and Cavinti. Chevrolet SAIL lent us the car we used, and it only reinforced just how Laguna is such a great road trip destination if you’re a group of three or more. Our trip was hassle-free even when it was raining hard that weekend. We got a bigass trunk that accommodated all our bags and left lots of free space, so it was so easy to fish something out of our bags in a hurry. The 16″ alloy wheels allowed light driving and quick reflexes. It’s also fuel-efficient. We only refilled once, making this trip much cheaper than I expected.

For the whole 2-day trip, our transportation expenses were only the toll fee (P214 one-way) and gas (P500 and a lot was still left in the tank when we returned the car). We were a party of four, which sets the total transportation cost to Luisiana at only P232 per person. If you commute, each of us would be paying at least P360 on bus, jeepney and tricycle fares.

Best Time to Visit Laguna

The dry months of December-May are always a great time to visit because there’s very little chance that it will rain.

Cavinti Falls is also known as Pagsanjan Falls

That said, Laguna is one of the few destinations that are great (even greater, sometimes) during the rainy season (June-November). It’s especially true if you’re going there for its many majestic waterfalls, which are splashier and more spectacular after the rain. But remember: visit in the rainy season but not immediately after the rain. After a downpour, the water turns brown and murky, and the trail muddy and slippery. Give the trail time to dry.

Also, weekends = crowds. Better visit on a weekday (Monday-Friday). But please note that most museums like the Rizal Shrine in Calamba are closed on Mondays. If your only available time is the weekend, it’s alright. Go regardless.

How Many Days for a Visit?

Before I discuss the itinerary, you need to know first how many days you want to do this road trip.

Hulugan Falls

Because it is near Manila, you can visit some attractions in Laguna a day tour. Here are some examples of day tours which will still allow you ample time to enjoy each stop. You can do each item in just one day:

  • San Pablo City and its lakes (usually Pandin and Sampaloc)
  • Boating from Pagsanjan to Cavinti Falls
  • Majayjay, Liliw and Nagcarlan Day Tour
  • Paete, Pangil, Kalayaan Day Tour
  • Hulugan Falls + Aliw Falls in Luisiana

Overnight tour is great too! But if you want to experience most of what the province has to offer, drive around Laguna de Bay (what many call Laguna Loop) and spend at least 2 nights. This ensures you get to enjoy multiple towns and try the many restaurants along the way.

Where to Stay in Laguna

Check Rates Here: Laguna Hotels!

There are a lot of budget inns and resorts scattered throughout the province. If you’re really on a budget, the best post, but the best (and the most popular) ones seem to be concentrated in San Pablo City, Calamba, Santa Rosa, Pagsanjan, and Los Banos.

Below is a list not of the cheapest accommodations but those that provide an experience. Budget travel shouldn’t be about the cheapest but those that give you the best value for money.

Sulyap in San Pablo City

San Pablo City

In my personal opinion, San Pablo City is the most ideal place to spend the night not just because of the quality of accommodations per se but also because there are a lot of lovely restaurants around.

  • Sulyap Bed and Breakfast (Casa de Obando Boutique Hotel, Casa de Alitagtag Boutique Hotel). Our best hotel experience in Laguna. It’s a charming complex of ancestral houses (or at least they look ancestral) fronted by one of the city’s best restaurants. The rooms are super spacious. (The bathroom alone can pass as a single room in some hotels.) And the service is on point. BUT super expensive. A double room starts P2900, room for four P5100 with breakfast. Book now or check updated rates here >>
  • Casa San Pablo . A quiet home turned into a country inn at the heart of the city. A bit expensive but one of the best places to stay in Laguna. They charge per head: the bigger the group, the lower the rates. To give you an idea, an overnight stay if you’re a party of five costs P1300 per person. If you’re a party of two, P1700 per head.
  • Tahanan ni Aling Meding . Another good option with a great view of Sampaloc Lake. Costs P2500 per double room. Book now or check updated rates here >>
  • Caliraya Springs Mountain Lake Resort . Situated on the shore of the man-made Caliraya Lake. A little hard to reach unless you have your own ride. Standard rooms start at P2400/night, a little pricey for me. But if you’re a group of 4 or 5, you may stay in a quad room for P4400/night, which is P1100 per person. Note that the rates on their website are higher, but when you’re there you’ll be given a list of discounted rates (the costs I mentioned), although they may change without prior notice. It’s good for golfers and groups looking for team-building activities. Book now or check updated rates here >>

Places to Visit and Things to Do in Laguna

Now that you know how much time you have for this trip, time to build your itinerary. Decide what you want to do! Here are some of the more popular attractions in Laguna!

Pandin Lake Lunch

  • Rizal Shrine, Calamba . A replica of the house where Jose Rizal grew up in. It has been transformed into a museum exhibiting many phases of the hero’s life including his childhood and his time in Europe. If you’ve always admired Rizal and his work, do not miss this. FREE.
  • Seven Lakes, San Pablo City . Have a small feast aboard a bamboo raft as you float in Lake Pandin. You can also swim here. Fee: P180 per person, bamboo raft ride only; P360 per person, bamboo raft ride + lunch!
  • Nuvali, Sta. Rosa . For those who love the outdoors and a little bit of shopping. You can also try wakeboarding, leisure biking, or mountain biking.
  • Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery . A National Historical Landmark built in 1845. The underground crypt was where friars were laid to rest during the Spanish era. FREE.
  • Bunga Falls, Nagcarlan . A small and not-so-well-known waterfall in Nagcarlan.
  • Liliw Town . Liliw’s baroque red-brick church is stunning, but don’t miss shopping for traditional footwear along the adjacent road.
  • Majayjay Falls and Cold Springs . Majayjay boasts numerous riverside cold spring resorts and a waterfall.
  • Shooting the Rapids to Pagsanjan Falls (aka Cavinti Falls) . Most people call it Pagsanjan Falls. (Thanks to our elementary textbooks!) But it’s starting to be known by another name, Cavinti Falls. The cascade is actually located in the municipality of Cavinti but the most popular jumpoff point, where the boating begins, is in Pagsanjan. The waterfall itself is great, but it is the journey that is truly unforgettable. To get there, the boatmen muscle it up, controlling the boat upstream. The view along the way is just wonderful. Rates: P1250 per person.
  • Cavinti Falls via Pueblo El Salvador Eco-Park . It’s the same waterfall but you can access it without riding the boat. Instead, you will hike, sometimes rappel, to the valley. It’s a tough 30-minute trek for the inexperienced but totally worth it. Rates: P270 for the hike/guide fee.
  • Hulugan Falls . Laguna’s newest tourism darling, Hulugan is a massive waterfall accessible after a 30-minute steep descent. A longer trail will lead you to two other cascades — Talay Falls and Hidden Falls — but will take a total of an hour and a half to complete (excluding the stay at Hulugan). Rates: P300 if you visit just one waterfall, P600 if all three.
  • Paete Town . An artistic town most famous for its sculpting tradition. See how residents make masterpieces by carving wood or creating papier-mache. The Baroque-style Paete Church is also worth your time.

Aside from all of these, almost all of Laguna’s towns have their own breathtaking parish church.

Sample Itinerary

Here’s a sample 3-day 2-night itinerary for a group of four on a road trip. This takes SLEX as the entry way to Laguna and the Manila East Road as exit route to avoid the heavy northward traffic once you reach Metro Manila some time during rush hour.

Please feel free to make adjustments according to your wants and needs.

Breakdown of Expenses

If you follow the above sample itinerary and you are a group of four, here’s how much you should be shelling out.

Toll fee – P53.5 (P214/4 pax) Gas – P300 (P1200/4 pax) Rizal Shrine – FREE Pandin Lake Lunch – P360 Sulyap Room – P1500 Breakfast – FREE Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery – FREE Hulugan Falls Tourism Fee – P20 Hulugan Falls Guide Fee – P150 Cavinti Falls Fee – P270 Caliraya Springs Room – P1100 (P4400/4 pax) Dinner – P200 Breakfast – FREE Paete Tour – FREE _________________________ TOTAL: P3953.5

Paete Art Products

Note that it does not include tips and incidentals (bottled water, etc.).

Bulk of the cost is the hotel. You may choose to stay at a much cheaper resort in Pagsanjan or Cavinti instead of Caliraya Mountain Lake Resort.

Another way of bringing the cost down is by increasing the number of people splitting the bill. Add one more person and the cost of accommodations, gas, toll fee, and guide fee will go down dramatically to only P3513.

If you only have a weekend to spare, you can do an overnight trip instead. Remove the Day 3 from the itinerary above and exit through SLEX back to Manila after trekking to Cavinti Falls. If you do this, the total cost of the overnight trip is P2707 if you’re a group of 4 or P2256 if you’re a group of 5.

Hi Yoshke, Thank you for this web site. You’re right, I “never” think about Laguna or the non-beach locations in the Philippines. But, you’ve convinced me. Unfortunately, the long trip you suggest will have to wait for another trip. In 2017, I would like to go to Paete, etc. for a day trip from Manila. We will not have a car. Do you have any suggestions of inexpensive day tours or public transport? Thank you!

Joy B

Hi former classmate, thanks for featuring my mom’s home province! :) While I spent most of my childhood in Manila, I have been able to enjoy road trips into Laguna with my cousins and their families.

Yosh Dimen

Thanks for visiting! We love road tripping in Laguna, especially San Pablo and Paete. :D

you know what would be great, a “kakanin tour” in laguna. Hope you consider writing about it someday

Hi! That’s a great idea! I loooove kakanin too! And I find Laguna’s kakanin remarkable, kahit yung bibingka na tinda lang sa bus. Kaka-miss!

Christan Opelanio

Hi, thank you so much for your very informative and detailed information of the natural beauty of Province of Laguna. I’am a Lagunense, but I haven’t visit some tourist spot here on your website. Thank you so much because your blog includes the expenses, I can budget my money for that! Hihihi :)

educational FIELD TRIPS

virtualfieldtrip2021(1).png

For students, field trips can be the best of both worlds: a welcome and exciting break from day-to-day classroom activities and a memorable, real-world experience that will solidify the curriculum in their minds. Unfortunately, the most desirable trips—those to far-away, enticing destinations— have long been inaccessible due to the ongoing pandemic. Limiting the movement of people outdoors not to mention the AITF policy on social distancing thus, not allowing children ages 18 and below outside their homes for health safety.

But today we have other options. Virtual field trips (VFTs) are just what their name suggests: field trips that are conducted virtually, over the Internet, and/or videoconferencing equipment so that students can learn directly from experts in far-flung places without ever leaving their homes.

To know more about our LIVE Virtual Field Trip program for K-12 and college students feel free to explore our website or see below options.

Top Destinations for Fieldtrips

  • March 19, 2018

It’s summer and what better way to spend it on field trips with friends! For us, like most homeschoolers, it’s not really a way to take time off from learning. In fact, we always look forward to field trips or educational travels, holiday or not.

Here are the Top Destinations for Fieldtrips

Museum museums can be found all over the globe. Most of not all, Children’s museums are hands-on and interactive that can occupy the whole family for hours, even the whole day.

http://www.takbo.ph/2018/03/the-6th-annual-running-clinic-for-kids/

Locally, we have Museong Pambata (read 20 Things We Learned in Museo Pambata ) and whole lot of other must visit museums: The Mind Museum,  The National Museum , Philippine Science Centrum,  Quezon City Experience (QCX), Philippine Sports Museum,  Bible Museum ,  BenCab Museum in Baguio  and many others.

Historical Sites, Monuments and Famous Landmarks

Visiting a historical place is another idea for a learning vacation. We kicked off our history class by visiting Cebu – going to the oldest city and oldest street in the country, and so much more. In Manila, a trip to Luneta would be a good start.

When we were in Singapore and Busan, we did a walking tour to check bridges, as Gab has been fascinated and interested in them, and these does not have admission fees:   Exploring Bridges in Singapore |  Places to Go in Busan For Kids

Read more of our Cebu Trip here: Cebu City Educational Tour for Kids | Places to Go in Cebu City

Zoos, Farms, Parks or Gardens

There are numerous learning opportunities when visiting a zoo or a farm. You can talk about habitats, life cycles, and importance of conservation and animal care.

In Manila, we have the Manila Zoo, the Avilon Zoo or the Manila Ocean Park. There are farms in Laguna, Cavite and Bulacan that offers tours to kids. We also have  Nayong Pilipino (in Rizal Park and another one in Pampanga).

Nayong Pilipino Park

Planning for a field trip does not have to cost an arm and a leg. It isn’t necessarily to be in a new location (though traveling can be a great experience and side-benefit!). The great thing about learning is that it can happen in any place that’s new to your child, something she or he has not seen or experienced before.

Two Weeks in the Philippines: A Sample Itinerary

I absolutely fell head over heels for the Philippines. The gorgeous turquoise waters, some of the best beaches in the world and one of the friendliest cultures I’ve ever come across. My two weeks in the Philippines was an experience that I will never forget and although it isn’t always a country that people immediately think about visiting in Southeast Asia, you should definitely reconsider. And to make the decision easier, I’ve put together this sample two week itinerary to help with your planning. Enjoy!

Day One: Manila

Manila is the capital of the Philippines and is the most densely populated city in the world. It is located on the eastern shores of the Manila Bay and is one of the best harbors in the country. Before heading to the Philippines I was basically told that if you can avoid Manila while visiting then that’s ideal. To be honest, Manila wasn’t that exciting of a city and I most definitely didn’t fall in love with it. It’s hard to find budget accommodations that are clean and don’t have cockroaches and the traffic is unbearable there. Like I’m pretty sure traffic moved faster in India where they had no rules of the road. Since the traffic is so bad it made it hard to do anything with limited time. However, spending a bit of time here is important and you’ll likely fly into the international airport in Manila to start your trip anyway. Here are some things you can do:

  • Old Manila Walks: Join this company for one of their unique walks of different parts of historic Manila. They host everything from an art walk to a food tour of Chinatown.
  • Bambike Ecotours:   Educational ecotourism activities done on a bamboo bike that are handmade! Tours range from art tours to a tour of Intramuros, the historic walled area.
  • Intramuros: The historic walled area located within the modern city of Manila.
  • Chinatown: Visit the world’s first Chinatown also known as Binondo, founded in 1594.
  • True Manila: A charity helping support homeless children and families living in poverty in Manila. True Manila hosts informal visits to Manila’s slums where you’ll have the chance to give back and see how people really live in Manila. Contact them via their Facebook page to arrange a time to volunteer!
  • Quiapo Church & Market: Especially on Friday this area is busy with vendors, fortune tellers, and more.

Manila is literally filled with hundreds of things to do. If you’re into shopping they have massive malls here. If you want to try some karaoke, Filipinos love their karaoke. Everything you can imagine you can likely find in this busy city. Here’s a bigger list of more ideas of what to do.

field trip itinerary sample philippines

Day Two-Four: El Nido

Leave the busy city of Manila as you’ll come back to it at the end of your trip, and head to the beautiful tropical oasis of El Nido located on Palawan island. El Nido is famous for its white sand beaches, coral reefs and gorgeous towering cliffs. You can fly directly to El Nido on Air Swift to save time but you’ll pay a little bit more for your flight, or you can fly to the main airport on the island in Puerto Princesa which will then require you to take a bus  to El Nido. The bus will take 6-9 hours and cost around 380-380 PHP, alternatively you can rent a van which will take 5-6 hours and cost between 500-700 PHP. It’s really up to you and whether you’re prioritizing time or money.

El Nido has over 50 beaches to visit, many lagoons to explore, and is known for scuba diving and island hopping. El Nido was also named by CN Traveler as having some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. However, tourism didn’t really start to this area until the recent years so the small, laid back town is trying to keep up. So head there before it is completely overrun by tourists like the popular island Boracay.

field trip itinerary sample philippines

I put together a full two day itinerary for El Nido here but here are some ideas of what you can do:

  • Island Hopping Tours : Lots of kiosks set up throughout the town offering the same packages but the most popular are A and C. Do both if you can. Opt to pay a bit more to have a kayak with you to explore the lagoons a bit better!
  • Nagkalit-kalit Falls: These beautiful falls are hidden in the jungle and you’ll need to hire a guide from their side of the road kiosk to visit. Be prepared to hike and get wet!
  • Twin Beaches: Nacpan and Calitang Beach are known as the Twin Beaches and are absolutely stunning. They’re known as the most beautiful in the world and although the access road is horrendous, it’s worth the trek.
  • Beach hop: Other beaches to explore include Las Cabanas, Duli Beach, Dagal Dagal Beach, Palabayan Beach.
  • Surfing: El Nido is a great spot to hit some waves or learn to surf.
  • Hike the Taraw Peak : Note that you should hire a guide for this as it isn’t an easy hike and is dangerous!

field trip itinerary sample philippines

Good eating spots in town include:

  • Kaptain’s Diner
  • Kyla’s Cocina (at Twin Beaches)
  • Republica Sunset Bar

Day Five-Eight: Bohol

Probably one of my favourite destinations in the Philippines, Bohol is an island made famous by the Chocolate Hills but has so much more to offer. The Chocolate Hills actually do not produce any chocolate despite their name.  This grassy series of hills get their name because during dry season (February-March) they turn from green to a roasted brown. The reason for the formation of these hills hasn’t really been confirmed. A theory is that they formed overtime due to rainwater, erosion and an uplift of coral deposits. The local story is that they were formed from the tears of a heartbroken giant.  The mystery of how and why they were formed is what makes them so intriguing. A trip here takes about an hour by local bus from Loboc to Carmen. However, other popular options is to hire a driver or rent a motorbike. The roads are lazy and quiet around this part of the Philippines so motorbikes aren’t as intimidating as they’d be in city centres.

Another must-do while in Bohol is the Tarsier Sanctuary , not to be mixed up with the Loboc Tarsier Sanctuary which you’ll pass on your way to the Chocolate Hills. The Loboc Tarsier Sanctuary is not an actual sanctuary and is not a humane way of seeing this cute, little creature. Instead, head to Loboc (depending on where you’re staying) and catch a local bus to the sanctuary in Corella. The bus ride will be around 40 minutes from Loboc, and again is the cheapest option for getting around in the area.

field trip itinerary sample philippines

On top of these two highlights, there is actually so much to do in Bohol that will keep every type of traveler happy. Some other options are:

  • Water sports: Kayaking, paddle boarding, surfing, etc. Kayaking and paddle boarding can be incredibly relaxing on the Loboc River in particular.
  • Mahogany forest:   A man-made forest that stretches 2km and is densely populated with mahogany trees.
  • Hike:  There are a few different hikes you can do around Loboc but you’re best to ask your hotel/hostel and they can help you find a local guide!
  • Loboc Church:   The second oldest church in Bohol built in 1602.
  • Baclayon Church:   Heavily damaged in the 2013 earthquake but still worth a visit.
  • Beaches:   Of course there are beautiful beaches here like any other island in the Philippines. Take some time to soak it in.

You can read my two day itinerary for Bohol  here to give you some more details and inspiration, however, although you can do Bohol in two days, I’d strongly recommend you stay longer. There is way more to do here than some of the other islands.

If you’re looking for a unique and beautiful/peaceful accommodation near Loboc, stay at Nuts Huts! Read my review here.

Day Eight-Eleven: Banaue & Batad

The next few days will be quite the journey but completely worth it. You can’t go to the Philippines without heading north to the rice terraces. So from Bohol, find your way bac k to Manila (flights are quick and inexpensive). Once you arrive in Manila your next mode of transportation won’t be that fun but embrace it any way. Head to the bus station in Manila for an overnight bus to Banaue. Here are my tips to make it more enjoyable, but basically the only other way to get to this area is by renting/hiring a car which can get incredibly expensive. Plus, it’s not the easiest of drives to do on your own. However, once you arrive in Banaue it’ll have all been worth it as this was one of my favourite parts of the Philippines.

The main thing to do in Banaue is hike. If you aren’t someone who likes to be active, you may find this place sort of boring as you can only see so much of the terraces by car. When you check into your guesthouse (the most common accommodations here), chat with the receptionist or owner to arrange a guide for the days you are there. I stayed at Banaue Homestay and it was fantastic. Beatrice (the owner) made us feel so at home and it was such a great stay. She arranged for us to have the same guide for the days we were there which was great and gave us the opportunity to really get to know one of the local guides. She also recommended what treks and things we should do based off how long we were there. I ended up doing the following:

field trip itinerary sample philippines

Day one: Hike Banaue rice terraces, a shorter and easier hike when you’re running on hardly any sleep!

Day two: Hike Batad rice terraces, a long, difficult hike but totally worth it!

Day three:  Ha Pao rice terraces and hot spring, however, you can also do Sagada which is much further away but I think more worth it.

You can read my ultimate guide to the rice terraces here that’ll give you all the information you need.

Day Twelve-Thirteen: Manila or Tagaytay

Since you didn’t have much time to really get to know Manila at the start of your trip, I’ve left a few days at the end for you to explore. You can opt to do any of the activities I mentioned at the top of this post or you can opt to venture out of Manila to Tagaytay or Taal Volcano, but keep in mind the crazy traffic in Manila can slow you down quite a bit.

field trip itinerary sample philippines

Tagaytay is located on route to Taal Volcano which can make for a great multi-day adventure if Manila isn’t of interest to you. It’s about a 1.5 hour drive (keep in mind this is without traffic) from Manila. There are lots of cute places to stop on route like the church that holds the bamboo organ , the jeepney factory, you can have an amazing meal at Bag of Beans  or stop for a spa treatment at Sonya’s Garden . Then of course, once you reach Tagaytay head to trek the Taal Volcano and enjoy the beautiful Taal Lake. You can zipline, visit an amusement park, visit unique museums like the puzzle museum or more. Here’s a great list to plan your trip!

There you have it, two weeks in the Philippines. Enjoy and share your favourite things in this beautiful country in the comments!
