Things to do in Bansko in winter: On and off the slopes

AD: My trip was hosted by Snomads , but all views are my own

Skiers in brightly coloured jackets weighed down by skis stagger along the pavement, overtaken by a horse and cart and watched by old ladies chatting on a roadside bench. Not a sight you normally see in a ski resort, but Bansko in Bulgaria is a ski town with a twist.

If you’re a non-skier – or just fancy a day off – the good thing about Bansko is that it’s not just a resort town, so there’s more to it than its slopes. On one side are the Pirin Mountains with their snow-covered peaks and the modern Bansko ski resort. And on the other is a historic Bulgarian town with cobbled streets and atmospheric restaurants.

You can party on and off the pistes and soak it off the next day in a hot spring. Or take a day out to visit a mountain vineyard or historic monastery. Whether you’re happiest on or off the slopes, here’s our pick of the best things to do in Bansko in winter.

Overlooking Bansko town from the piste

Things to do in Bansko: On the slopes

Skiing and snowboarding.

Bansko is Bulgaria’s most popular ski resort. It’s set between three mountain ranges with the ski area at an altitude of 2000–2600 metres, which means means it gets reliable snow cover from December–March (and if not most of the pistes are covered by snow cannons), as well as having some spectacular views from the top of the slopes.

Bansko’s ski area has around 70km of pistes. It’s not a huge area by Alpine standards, but there’s a good mix of levels, with eight blue runs, 11 reds and two blacks. The piste map shows a red run on the right but the Tzarna Mogila lift connecting it hasn’t been running for years, so the ski area is concentrated around Bunderishka and Shiligarnika.

Views across Bansko in winter from the mountaintop

Skiing and snowboarding lessons are cheap in Bansko and instructors speak good English, so it’s a great place to learn or polish your skills. There’s also one of the nicest beginner slopes I’ve skied on – the Ski Road. This gentle, tree-lined, 15km run takes you back down to town from the ski resort and is perfect for getting your ski legs (though nervous skiers might want to steer clear around 4.30pm when there’s a mass exodus off the slopes).

Advanced skiers might get a bit bored with the main pistes, but there’s some good off-piste and tree runs as long as there’s been plenty of snow. A few companies run ski touring trips too, where you’re taken out with a guide and spend the night in a mountain hut.

Lifts and pistes in Bansko ski resort, Bulgaria

Bansko has had a lot of recent investment so lifts are modern and fast, with mostly chairlifts in the ski area. Though to get up there you need to take a 25-minute gondola ride. It’s the resort’s biggest bottleneck with the worst queues around 9am (don’t be too polite when queuing or you’ll never get to the front!). It’s best to get there early or late to miss the worst queues – or look out for the minibuses shuttling people up to the top.

Buses are included in the lift pass and not many people know about them so there isn’t so much of a line. There are plenty of cafés dotted around the slopes if you want to stop for a drink or something to eat – and a row of bars near the gondola for après-ski partying.

Other snowy activities

If you’re not a fan of skiing or snowboarding, there are a couple of other things to do in Bansko in winter which will get you out on the slopes to enjoy the snowy mountain scenery.

You can take a snowmobile excursion through the forests of the Pirin Mountains. Or a more relaxed paced snowshoeing trip * up to one of the mountain huts. You can also rent a sledge and slide down the small hill near the bottom of the gondola.

Cobbled streets and old stone houses in Bansko old town

Things to do in Bansko: Off the slopes

Explore the old town.

You don’t have to go far from the lift station on the edge of town with its apartment blocks and tourist bars to feel like you’ve gone back a few centuries. Just follow Pirin Street from the gondola end of town for around 15 minutes and you’ll reach Bansko’s old town, a peaceful maze of cobbled streets and traditional stone buildings.

It’s the type of place to get lost and see what you find. Look out for Holy Trinity Church with its towering bell tower, streetside craft stalls, cosy restaurants and grand statues.

If you want to find out a bit more about Bansko’s history and architecture, you can take a two-hour guided walking tour * (there are also free walking tours at weekends).

There are also a couple of museums, like the Velyanov House which is a traditional Bulgarian stone house decorated with 19th-century wall paintings and carved wooden ceilings. Or the house where Bulgarian poet Nikola Vaptsarov grew up has been restored to look like it would’ve done in his childhood in the 1910s with his poems on display.

Eat in a traditional mehana

Many of the stone building in Bansko’s old town have been turned into mehanas , old-style taverns where you can try traditional Bulgarian food and wine, which often have performances from local folk musicians and dancers. Bulgarian food shares some similarities with Turkish and Greek food, with lots of local, seasonal ingredients.

If you’re visiting Bansko in winter look out for hearty, warming winter dishes like Chomlek (beef stew) and Kapama (sauerkraut with chicken, veal or pork baked in a clay pot). Meat features heavily in Bulgarian cuisine but you can find vegetarian dishes like Bob Chorba (bean soup) and Sirene po Shopski (baked tomatoes, cheese and eggs).

The name mehana comes from the Persian for ‘house of wine’, so there’s plenty of local wine too. Red wines dominate in Bulgaria but there are also some whites and rosés.

Soak in the hot springs

The area around Bansko is surrounded by natural thermal springs, which are perfect for soaking away any skiing aches and pains or just spending a relaxing afternoon. The village of Banya is a 15-minute drive from Bansko and is one of the region’s centres for spa tourism, with a mix of public pools and hotels open to day visitors.

Water temperatures range from 37–57°C and there are often great views out to the snowy mountains peering out through the clouds of steam. The Izgreva spa is a bargain at the equivalent of €5 for spa entry, with three different pools, a sauna, restaurant and bar. If you don’t have your own transport you can take a tour * to the spa from Bansko.

Fountain and local wine in Bansko

Take a day trip

A bit further afield you can also take a day trip from Bansko to the medieval Rila Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site that’s the biggest monastery in Bulgaria and is famous for its stunning colourful frescoes. It’s 100km north of Bansko but you can take a day tour * which includes transfers and gives you two hours at the monastery.

Other great local day trips include Melnik, the smallest city in Bulgaria which is known for its wine, and the Rhodope narrow-gauge railway between Septeremvri and Dobrnishte.

The weather in bansko in winter.

Bansko’s winter weather is cold and crisp, so pack the thermals. From December to February the average high temperatures range from 1-3°C (34–37°F) and average lows from -4–-7°C (25–19°F). The ski season normally runs from mid-December until early April, depending on snowfall. January is the coldest and snowiest month.

How to get to Bansko

Bansko is 160km or a 2.5-hour drive south of the Bulgarian capital Sofia where you’ll find the nearest international airport. Many hotels and chalets offer airport transfers for their guests, otherwise there are a selection of shared transfers * available.

You can also rent a car at Sofia airport and drive to Bansko, or there are buses and a train service from Sofia to Bansko, changing at Septemvri onto the Rhodope mountain railway.

Where to stay in Bansko

We stayed at Chalet Diana-Ross , in a quiet area on the edge of Bansko’s old town. It’s 15 minutes’ walk to the gondola, but has a minibus shuttle. The chalet’s one of three in Bansko run by Snomads on environmentally and socially responsible principles. Everything’s recycled, they use eco-friendly products and serve organic local food and wine.

Diana-Ross sleeps 25, with all en-suite rooms spread over four floors plus a hot tub, sauna, table tennis and cosy lounge. It’s a relaxed, friendly place, run by chalet hosts who’ve racked up over 30 winter seasons working around Europe. It’s also good value, with prices ranging from £279–£399 a week per person half-board including transfers.

21 Magical Things to Do in Bansko, Bulgaria’s Mountain Getaway

21 Magical Things to Do in Bansko, Bulgaria’s Mountain Getaway

If you’re looking for a wonderful mountain getaway at any time of year, Bansko ticks the boxes.

Magical in winter under a dusting of snow, charming in autumn when the leaves start to do their yearly metamorphosis, vibrant in summer when festivals pop up throughout town, and fresh in spring when the flowers start popping up from their winter hibernation.

While Bansko may be best known as Bulgaria’s premier ski resort – and indeed, the largest  ski resort in the Balkans  – there are still plenty of things to do in Bansko at any time of year.

filip travel bansko

Between Stephanie and I, we’ve visited Bansko at three distinct times of the year: summer, fall, and winter. Each season offered different Bansko activities to take advantage of: hiking in Pirin national park in the summer, eating hearty Bulgarian meals on crisp fall evenings, and playing in the snow in the winter (since neither Stephanie or I are coordinated enough to learn how to ski).

With each visit, we feel Bansko grow on us a bit more, and we see why the small mountain town of Bansko is quickly becoming a hub for nature-loving digital nomads as well as skiers and snowboarders from around Europe looking for a budget-friendly winter holiday. From some of the tastiest food in Bulgaria to plentiful day trips to all the outdoor activities you can dream up for the season, here are the best things to do in Bansko, Bulgaria!

The Best Things to Do in Bansko (Year-Round)

Meet bansko’s adorable feline residents.

filip travel bansko

I don’t know, but cats in Bulgaria are generally not as friendly as their Greek or Turkish neighbors. This, however, is not the case in Bansko, where I was adopted by several adorable cats within an hour of arriving.

These friendly kitties proceeded to climb onto my lap unprompted, nuzzling me, and just generally being adorable. It was hard for me to leave without wanting to take them all home! If you’re a cat lover, you’ll love Bansko!

Visit the Bansko International Art Gallery

filip travel bansko

One of the largest art galleries in Bulgaria, the International Art Gallery in the town center of Bansko ( address : ul. “Nikola Y. Vaptsarov” 2) is well-worth a visit! There are dozens, if not hundreds, of talented artists from around the world on display at this gallery.

The gallery opened in 2016, and it’s home to artists from around the world, primarily from around Eastern Europe: from Bulgaria to Russia and beyond.

The artists there are really phenomenal, and I had to stop myself from buying several large pieces that were gorgeous but out of my budget! It’s free to visit and 1000% worth the time.

Wander the streets of Bansko’s Old Town

filip travel bansko

You may be surprised that Bansko, a small town of some 10,000 inhabitants, has an Old Town whereas Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital, doesn’t!

While the Old Town of Bansko isn’t nearly as old as many other Old Towns in Europe, it’s still extremely beautiful and well-worth getting lost in its winding alleyways. It provides a quiet, nostalgic counterpoint to the modern developments happening around the gondola in Bansko’s northern end.

It’s a great place to wander with a camera – especially around golden hour – and snap some photos.

Visit the childhood home of Neofit Rilski

filip travel bansko

One of Bulgaria’s most beloved historical figures is Neofit Rilski, who was a major figure of the Bulgarian National Revival movement. He was born in the mountain town of Bansko and his childhood home has been converted into a museum dedicated to his legacy.

An educated monk, celebrated teacher, and talented artist, Neofit Rilski revolutionized education in Bulgaria and is best known for his work in standardizing Bulgarian grammar and translating the New Testament into Bulgarian for the first time.

See the colorful Velyanova House

filip travel bansko

Beautifully painted with intricate murals on both its exterior and interior, the Velyanova House is, in my opinion, the most photogenic place in Bulgaria.

Bulgaria has dozens upon dozens of house museums in its historic towns – I’ve visited ones in Koprivshtitsa, Plovdiv, and Melnik, and probably others I’m forgetting! Among all the house museums, the Velyanova House stands out strongly.

See the gorgeous Trinity Church (and its storks!)

filip travel bansko

The lovely Trinity Church located right on Bansko’s main walking street, Pirin Street, is an absolute can’t-miss in Bansko.

Plans for the church started in 1810, when locals decided they wanted a church in Bansko proper, rather than in an adjacent town. They began to raise money, and with the donations of nearly 300 locals, enough was raised to begin building a church.

There was only one problem: Bansko was currently under Ottoman occupation, and according to Ottoman laws, a church could only be built in a place where there was already a church (so basically: no new churches).

To get around this, the man behind the church’s idea – Dyado Lazko – snuck into the site of the future Trinity Church, added a small icon and some church relics, and then he asked a woman to ‘prophesy’ a dream about these relics in order to give a pretense for the construction to begin.

After this — and several other circuitous steps along the way, including obtaining official permissions — the church was still not given full permission to be built… so Dyado Lazko just began building it anyway, quickly so as to hide the original ‘origins’ of the church… those ‘origins’ being nothing more than a mere ruse.

Eventually, money ran out, and construction stopped. Dyado Lazko was imprisoned and later killed, mostly for his role in advocating for the church’s construction, and the Ottomans wanted to tear down the church in their rage against him and his many tricks.

filip travel bansko

But, the people of Bansko had one final trick up their sleeve. His friend, Lazar German, carved two Turkish half-moons next to the cross on the church door (seen above). Upon seeing this, this saved Trinity Church from destruction, and sealed the fate of Trinity Church’s preservation for future generations.

Nowadays, the church is really interesting to visit for its beautiful walled grounds with gardens, its spectacular inside with its murals and iconostasis, but also for its adorable resident storks who have taken residence in the tower and become the unofficial mascots of Bansko.

Visit the House Museum of Nikola Vaptsarov

filip travel bansko

This museum, set in a historic house where Nikola grew up, shows the story of the life of the poet and revolutionary Nikola Vaptsarov through three distinct stages in his life.

The museum opened in 1952 and has been renovated three times to continue modernizing the museum for guests. It shows documents from his life and family tree, typical Bansko-style furnishings, stories of the revolutionary years against the Ottoman regime, and another annex building contains traditional costumes and artifacts from Bansko’s older period.

Marvel at the imposing Monument of Paisii Hilendarski

filip travel bansko

In the center of Bansko, you’ll find a massive monument to Paisii Hilendarski. He was a key figure in the Bulgarian National Revival movement which sought to maintain a uniquely Bulgarian identity in the face of Ottoman dominance.

Both a clergyman and author, his main contribution to Bulgarian society was writing his masterpiece Istoriya Slavyanobolgarskaya  in 1762, which tried to capture the complete history of Bulgaria in order to wake up the sense of Bulgarian nationalism, which had been dulled under centuries of occupation.

Cowork with digital nomads at Coworking Bansko

filip travel bansko

Bansko has a thriving digital nomad scene, the heart of which is Coworking Bansko. The passion project of friends Mathias and Uwe, Coworking Bansko focuses on community, offering social events every single day of the week (sometimes multiple a day!) in order to really create a group of friends – not just networking.

My second trip to Bansko, I visited for the Bansko Unconference, which focuses on collaborative growth through communication, spontaneity, and community. I highly recommend it to other bloggers and travel entrepreneurs who want to grow their business collaboratively.

Enjoy the Bansko restaurant scene!

filip travel bansko

For some reason, I find that Bulgarian food in Sofia is just ‘meh’ – but when I go to Bansko, I fall in love with Bulgarian food all over again. They use such fresh and tasty meat, dairy, and produce, that it’s hard not to fall in love!

Bulgarian food is a synthesis of Slavic, Greek, and Turkish food traditions, and Bansko, being relatively close to the Greek border, seems to have absorbed Greek influence most of all. You’ll find phenomenal salads, fresh yogurts and cheeses, local grilled meats and stews, and the tastiest potato dishes you can imagine — all at affordable prices. Your average meal for two in Bansko should cost about 50 leva with wine, about 25 euros for two people.

My favorite restaurants in Bansko are: Banski Han, Banksi Aiduti, Zehtindjieva Kashta, and Baryakova Mehana.

The Best Things to Do in Bansko in Summer

Visit during jazz fest.

filip travel bansko

If you’re a fan of jazz music, you won’t want to miss Bansko during Jazz Fest. My first trip to Bansko was for Jazz Fest, since my husband is a fan of jazz music. The music festival takes place over the course of about five days, and includes about 3 hours of music acts every evening in the main square of Bansko.

There are paid-for seats near the stage or you can make like the rest of the crowds and buy a beer or cider from one of the local nonstops, find a comfy patch of grass or slab of concrete, and enjoy the tunes for the price of free-fifty.

Take a scenic gondola ride up to Bunderishka Polyana

filip travel bansko

While the gondola queues can get crazy in the peak ski season – such as around Christmas/New Year, school holidays, and long weekends – at other times of the year, taking the gondola from Bansko up to Bunderishka Polyana is a breeze.

Take in stunning views of the forest as you soar over Pirin National Park in about 30 minutes, up to the meadow where there is a restaurant, the starting point of several hiking trails, and even a shooting range, because #Balkans.

Hike in Pirin National Park, Bulgaria’s gorgeous nature escape

filip travel bansko

Pirin National Park is full of incredible hiking trails, and it would take several months to hike them all. Depending on your fitness level, there are a huge variety of hikes you can do.

My husband and I are pretty lazy hikers, so we just hiked from Bunderishka Polyana to the Banderitsa hut, where we had some delicious Bulgarian food and Somersby ciders, before moving onwards to the oldest tree in Pirin National Park (more on that below!) before heading back down to Bansko. It was about a 2.5-hour roundtrip hike at a pretty low exertion level, so it’s what I would recommend for beginner hikers.

For intermediate hikers, you could hike from Bunderishka to the Vihren hut and then go to one of the lakes nearby Vihren, like Bezbog and Popovo.

Alternately, you could take the shuttle bus organized by the tourist center up to Vihren hut and then hike to several of the lakes by Vihren to cut out a less scenic and more challenging part of the hike, but you wouldn’t be able to take the gondola in this instance.

For advanced hikers, I suggest starting at Vihren hut via the shuttle bus and then hiking to Vihren peak, which is the highest peak in Pirin National Park, the second-highest in Bulgaria, and the third-highest in the entire Balkan peninsula. It’s definitely a difficult hike and not for the faint of heart, so be sure you’re aware of your skills and be prepared before departing!

See the oldest tree in Bulgaria

filip travel bansko

One of the coolest places in Pirin National Park is Baikushev’s pine: a 1,300-year-old white fir that is the oldest known tree in Bulgaria.

It is truly massive: 8 meters in circumference and 26 meters high. It’s not super widely known except by locals, and you’ll see lots of Bulgarian tourists making the pilgrimage to visit this impressive, historic tree.

Things to Do in Bansko in Winter

Get a thrill on bansko’s ski slopes.

Bulgaria - Borovets - Ski slope, young boy skiing down the hill. Free ride.Alpine ski resort Borovets, Rila mountain, Bulgaria

I’m not a skier, but the skiers I know love Bansko! There are several ski areas in Bulgaria – Borovets and Pamporovo are the two other most popular – but Bansko is by far the biggest and most popular among international tourists.

With 13 ski lifts and 75 kilometers of ski slopes, Bansko has someone for everyone! But do be aware that sometimes during holiday weekends and peak travel times, the lines for the gondolas can get extremely long, so do bear that in mind!

Enjoy its apres-ski scene (even if it’s not ski season!)

filip travel bansko

From my outsider perspective as a skier, the best part of skiing is the part where it’s all finished and all you do is, well, drink off the cold!

The area around the Bansko ski lift is full of fun bars with apres-ski scenes that will delight you. One of my favorite bars is Smoky Mountain Bar, which I went to on my most recent trip to Bansko. Another great one is Pirin 75.

Relax in thermal springs

To warm up cold muscles and achy bones, check out the thermal springs in Bankya, just 15 kilometers away from Bansko.

No car? This tour will take you there and back with a roundtrip transfer and entry fee for a reasonable price!  Check availability and inclusions here.

Easy Day Trips From Bansko

Go on a day trip to the dancing bear sanctuary.

filip travel bansko

Unfortunately, for decades, bears were captured and mistreated throughout the Balkans: caged outside of restaurants, trained to “dance” and brought onto trams and down the street, and all sorts of other unnatural behaviors that involved captivity, abuse, and torment.

Luckily, countries around the Balkans are waking up to what a horrible injustice this is, and it’s become illegal in most countries to entrap bears and use them for human entertainment. But what happens to those bears, whose lives have been destroyed by human intervention?

They can’t exactly fend for themselves out in nature — and they’d be a danger to other humans if let go, as they now relate humans and food as hand-in-hand. So in the place of these horrible bear attractions now exist wonderful bear sanctuaries, where these poor bears can enjoy a more natural life while still being protected in a sanctuary designed to protect them and give them a nearly-normal life.

While of course, the better answer is that these bears never had to experience abuse at the hands of humans in the first place, this is as good of a place as they can live in now, after the damage has been done.

Belitsa ‘Dancing Bear’ Park is one such sanctuary, located about a 45-minute drive from Bansko, which makes a phenomenal place to visit. Do keep in mind that bears hibernate during winter and therefore it is only possible to see the bears during the months in which they are not hibernating.

Visit the impressive natural pyramids in Stob

filip travel bansko

For a landscape that looks like a slice of the American Southwest uprooted in the middle of Bulgaria, head to the small town of Stob and embark on an easy hike to visit the so-called Stob Pyramids.

Stephanie and I visited on a hot summer day after visiting the Rila Monastery, and while the heat made the hike more challenging that it should have been, it was still a delightful 1-hour return hike (with time for photo stops!).

It’s an ideal stop if you’ve rented a car and are already visiting Rila Monastery, the next item on this list!

See the enchanting Rila Monastery

Bulgaria - Sofia - Rila Monastery Landscape

We love Rila Monastery – it’s exquisite, and in our opinion, it’s the crown jewel of Bulgaria’s tourism potential.

From its ornately painted striped arches to its colorful mural ceiligns to its comic-panel-like storytelling on the walls of the church, there are so many beautiful things to see at Rila Monastery before you even enter the church!

Inside the church is, of course, also lovely, with a beautiful iconstasis, wonderful murals, stunning chandeliers, and an overwhelming sense of peace and importance.

Where to Stay in Bansko

filip travel bansko

We have a full post on the  best ski resorts in Bansko  which may be helpful, but here are our top 3 suggestions if you just want a quick tip.

Budget:  This small, friendly  Boutique Hotel Uniqato  has only 16 studios and suites, all with large and modern stylish rooms. There are three types of rooms available: double, maisonette, and suite.

All rooms have a balcony and you can choose either a view of the mountain or the city of Bansko! Breakfast is large and the choices vary daily, so it’s hard to get bored. It’s extremely well-priced and well-located, so book early!

>>  Check rates, photos, reviews, and availability here.

Mid-Range:  The charming  Astera Bansko  apartment and hotel complex has 105 rooms, with large windows and stunning mountain views. The rooms have a cozy cabin feel with all the wonderful amenities of a 4-star hotel. There is a ski school, and if you didn’t bring your own skis or snowboard, ski equipment can be rented.

The spa and wellness facilities are world-class at Astera Bansko. The ski resort offers well-priced packages that are sure to free you from tension and stress. They have an indoor pool, fitness center, beauty salon, hot tubs, hammam, steam room, and sauna, all for you to enjoy when you’re not hitting the slopes (or you’re recovering from them!).

Luxury : There’s only one 5-star option in town — luckily it’s pretty amazing! The spacious, gorgeously decorated rooms and luxe amenities at Kempinski Hotel Grand Arena are sure to impress even the pickiest of us.

Skiers don’t have to worry because they provide passes at the hotel for the gondola lift. The ski lift is only a short walk from Kempinksi so it’s a true ski-in, ski-out resort in Bansko! There’s also a ski room where ski storages are available.

The Kempinski Spa offers several unique relaxation experiences, from an Alphasphere to a snow room to saunas and pools to soothe tired muscles and reduce stress. They also have your standard massages and other wellness packages!

What to Pack for Winter in Bulgaria

Bulgaria - Borovets - Stephanie Fox Hat

We have a full  Bulgaria packing list , but in case you just want the quick version, here are a few essentials you shouldn’t forget to pack!

A good guidebook:  While travel blogs are great, we still think a good guidebook is always handy. We own and strongly recommend the  Lonely Planet Bulgaria & Romania  for travel in Pamporovo and beyond!

One or two swimsuits:  While swimsuits may not come to mind for ski season, if you’re staying in a ski resort with a sauna, indoor pool, or steam room, you’ll likely want one! We suggest bringing two so you never have to put a cold wet one back on.  We love this one .

Plenty of winter clothing:  You can check our packing list above for our full winter packing suggestions for men and women. At a minimum, you’ll want to bring a warm winter jacket (I love this  North Face parka ), cozy  snow boots , warm  wool socks , touch-screen friendly  gloves , a  scarf , and a  winter hat .

Any ski equipment and clothing:  We’re not skiers ourselves, so we don’t have specific ski gear equipment, but special ski clothes — waterproof pants and jackets, goggles, etc. — and ski gear obviously should be on your packing list, unless you have decided to rent it all when you arrive at your Bulgaria ski resort.

Moisturizer:  Travel will beat your skin up in the best of times — and winter travel in addition to skiing will really do a number on it! If you use a moisturizer at home, bring it. If you’ve never used  a moisturizer  before, you really should start. You’ll be happy to give your face a boost before heading outside in the cold all day.

Sunscreen : We strongly suggest wearing sunscreen when you spend time outdoors, no matter the weather outside. The higher altitudes combined with the reflection of the sun off the snow can lead to unexpected sunburns. I love this  solid Neutrogena sunscreen  – it’s mess-free, works well in carry-ons, is ultra-protective, and blends in well.

Planning a Trip to Bansko? Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!

Bulgaria - Borovets - Snow Covered Pine Trees

We strongly suggest that you travel to Bulgaria with a valid  travel insurance  policy. While the country is safe, accidents can happen anywhere. If you experience an accident or theft, travel insurance will help you recover your costs and enjoy the rest of your trip.

This is especially important in winter, since winter activities carry a certain amount of risk with them. We recommend the Explorer upgraded insurance plan if you plan to do any skiing or snowboarding so that you can be fully covered.

For travel insurance, I use  World Nomads .  I’ve been a happy customer of theirs for almost three years, and I’m happy to refer them to anyone I meet.

Bansko Accommodation - Skiing Bankso - View from the top of Todorka Peak

Bansko Ski Resort is in the southwest of Bulgaria, about 160 km from the capital, Sofia . The town of Bansko sits at the foot of the Pirin Mountain , with the Glazne River running through the town. From that description, you can guess that the Bansko ski runs and resorts are on Pirin National Park Mountain itself, and its highest peak is Vihren.

This is the best ski resort in Bulgaria, and the Bansko ski season is one of the longest. Ideal for skiing, snowboarding, après skiing, chilling out, and nature photography, Bansko Bulgaria ski holidays are a fantastic way to explore and appreciate the wonder of winter.

To break down the terrain at Bansko Ski Resort:

Bankso Ski Resoirt

  • 50% intermediate skier runs
  • 11% advanced runs
  • 6% black runs for experts
  • Nursery area for youngsters learning

There is plenty to see and do around the resort for families , with a children’s ski school onsite and a kindergarten that takes children from 4-7 years of age. There are 18 runs, which take you through stunning natural beauty, with 70 km of pistes. As you can see, Bansko is large!

There are also 7 km of night skiing runs; the longest is 4.8 km. Enough statistics. Are you feeling itchy feet yet? A daily Bansko ski pass ranges from 50 Euros for adults to 20 Euros for children, so prices are competitive. (Please do check these before booking your Bansko ski package to be sure they have not increased)

Pros Of Skiing In Bansko

  • Affordable skiing and accommodations
  • Compact town, easily walkable
  • Good infrastructure with well-maintained gondolas and lifts

Cons Of Skiing In Bansko

  • Challenges with getting on at the gondola base station and lifts: long stairs, crowded and disorganized entrances
  • Overcrowded slopes, especially with inexperienced skiers
  • Inefficient and time-consuming process for obtaining lift passes

Bansko Piste Map

Find your Bansko piste map here .

This displays the ski slopes and trails in the Bansko ski resort in Bulgaria. It provides valuable information for skiers and snowboarders, including the layout of the ski resort, the location of chairlifts and ski lifts, the difficulty levels of the slopes (e.g., green runs for beginners, blue runs for intermediate, red runs for advanced, and black for experts), and other vital features like mountain restaurants and ski rental shops.

Brands We Use And Trust

Activities on offer at bansko resort.

Skiing and snowboarding are the top activities to enjoy during the Bansko ski holidays, but several others exist. For instance, the Bansko hotels in the area have fantastic facilities, such as spas and gyms, so that you can relax with the alpine scenery just outside your window! They generally also have package holidays to Bansko on offer, providing all the services and Bansko ski deals you want.

There are shopping opportunities, great nightlife, a chilled après ski vibe, and a fantastic food scene. We will run through the specific types of skiing and snowboarding opportunities for a Bansko ski trip.

To give you an idea, there are runs for beginners, intermediates, advanced, and children. With two top ski schools onsite, Pirin 2000 and Ulen, you’ll indeed find your feet on the Bulgaria ski slopes!

The Bansko Ski Season

The season at Bansko is longer than any other Bulgaria ski season in the area, partly why so many visitors say this is the best skiing in Bulgaria.

The season usually begins in mid-December, depending on the weather, i.e., whether the snow decides to appear sooner than planned. Although there is enough white stuff, it will start a week earlier. When the Bansko ski season ends, you can expect the snow to tailor off somewhere in mid-April when the resort begins to close for the season before the season finally comes to a complete close in May.

The Skiing Nitty Gritty

Bansko has an altitude of between 2,000 and 2,600 meters, and the summit is officially at 2,560 meters. The base is 990 meters, where the beginner runs and ski schools are located.

There are 14 lifts on site, most of them fast chair types, and an eight-seater gondola transports visitors around . You can expect queues during peak times, but these aren’t usually horrific.

How To Get To Bansko

Bansko is straightforward to reach because it is relatively close to Sofia . Most international visitors fly into Sofia, hire  a car, and drive to Bansko or take a bus. Driving will take around 2 hours , depending on traffic, and regular buses run from Sofia to the airport daily. There are also bus links to the other main towns and cities in Bulgaria .

Where To Eat And Drink Near Bansko

Patatnik - Bulgarian national dish

This is a ski resort so that you can expect a vast range of food choices, après ski bars, and a real winter-fun vibe. The great news is that restaurants around Bansko are ideal for all budgets, so if you’re visiting with the kids and don’t want to splash the cash in an a la carte restaurant, you can easily find a cheaper alternative.

Casual Dining

The Irish Harp is a fantastic choice for a relaxed meal with that famous Irish charm! Portions are plentiful, and prices are lower than you might expect. The Bar and Grill El Torito is another good option for those traveling with children.

Fine Dining

Of course, if you want to splash the cash a little, perhaps for a special occasion, then there are some exceptionally flashy choices, such as Come, Prima , with its a la carte menu, or the Fondue Restaurant at the Lucky Bansko Hotel. Both of these are ideal for that special night out with a loved one!

Bulgarian Cuisine

Head to Baryakova Tavern or The LOG House to try authentic Bulgarian fare . If you’re missing your summer barbecues, head to Mehana Bai Kotse , where you’ll find a fantastic menu of barbecued meats.

Can I rent equipment on arrival at Bansko?

Yes, or you can rent it online so it’s ready for you when you arrive. Pants, ski boots, skis, the works.

Can I book lift pass packages for Bansko?

You can book packages for up to 13 days, available at various durations. You can buy your packages at the gondola lift on arrival.

Do I need to purchase medical insurance when skiing at Bansko?

Yes, this is required by law in Bulgaria. Find that here.

Does my Bansko ski pass include piste insurance?

Yes, but you should also ensure you have high-quality holiday insurance .

I am a beginner; how many ski lessons should I take at Bansko?

It entirely depends on how quickly you pick it up, as well as your general level of fitness. If you’re reasonably fit, booking Bansko Bulgaria skiing packages that include full-day lessons for the first three days of your holiday is a good idea. Then, reduce it to half-day classes until you feel competent. If you’re not so hot on the fitness side, ease yourself in with a few half-day lessons first, then move up to full-day lessons. There is no hard and fast rule.

What are ski lessons like at Bansko?

You can opt for a private one-to-one lesson or cut the cost of your lessons if you want to go down the private route by choosing a two-to-one format, which is two learners to one instructor. You can take classes as a family (minimum of three people), which can be privately arranged, or you can go down the group lesson route.

My child has never tried skiing or snowboarding; which should they try first?

It is generally advised for children (under ten years, six years minimum) to ski before snowboarding. It is a little easier to get to grips with and helps to develop balance and coordination basics. Enrolling your child in group lessons is a great idea so they meet new people and have great fun along the way.

Is there a kindergarten for my child at Bansko?

Yes, there is a kindergarten for children aged 4-7 years, with 2 hours of ski-time play and time inside playing games and doing craft activities. The kindergarten runs from 9.30 am until 4 pm and can be found at Banderishka Poliana.

Can I rent a helmet at Bansko Ski Resort?

Yes, adults can rent helmets for a fee, and children receive one for free.

Can I rent ski blades at Bansko ski resort?

In a continent with many glamorous ski options, Bulgaria’s Bansko is distinguished by great value for money and a cheerful atmosphere all its own. Nestled between a medieval town and the Unesco-listed Pirin National Park are 75km of piste, rising to an altitude of over 2500m, and with reliable snow cover between December and April.  In 2021, the Bulgarian Ski Federation and Bansko will host the Ski World Cup and the World Championship, as well as the male skiers in February 2023, reinforcing its importance in the eastern European ski scene. Here's what you need to know about skiing in Bansko.

A set of skis and a snowboard lean against a fence in a mountainous snowy area

Terrain and network

Bansko ski resort offers 18 ski slopes. This includes six blue and two orange for the beginners, while for the advanced skiers and boarders there are 11 red and two black pistes to choose from. Needless to say that the beginner’s slopes are way busier than those for advanced riders, especially when it comes to official holidays in Bulgaria, during the weekends and on a sunny day. The 14km "ski road" from the summit to the town is great for those finding their legs, although it gets choked with homebound skiers after 4.30pm, when last rides are called on the lifts.

Intermediate and beginner skiers and boarders will find an excellent piste network on the mountain, served by a mixture of uncovered chairs and draglifts. When the snow is plentiful (as it generally is between January and April) there are some good off-piste options for the more advanced; and even when it’s not, more than 90% of the runs are equipped with snow-making facilities. Riding off-piste is not recommended if you're not equipped for freeriding, as the avalanche risk is high right after snowfalls and in warmer weather. It's best to join an off-piste ski tour led by a certified local guide.

When not swaddled in cloud, the arresting beauty of the 400-sq-km Pirin National Park  is a real highlight. It is home to between one quarter and one third of the country’s plant and bird species, includes dramatic peaks such as Mt Vihren (2914m) and Todorka (2746m), and even reputedly shelters wolves and bears. On clear days with good snow underfoot it’s hard to beat the combination of Bansko’s long, broad and varied runs, banks of stately fir trees, and views of the surrounding peaks and town below.

Gondola and chair lift access

While Borovets was once the largest resort in Bulgaria , Bansko now claims that honour. Accordingly, it can attract large crowds from Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, Russia, Turkey and the UK, putting infrastructure under significant pressure at peak times (such as the first week of February, when peak snowfall coincides with several national and school holidays in the region).

The resort’s major drawback – a significant bottleneck at the sole gondola leading from the town to the higher lift network – becomes apparent in these peak periods. A campaign to open a second gondola is underway, but may not overcome restrictions placed on further development in the national park. Canny skiers trying to avoid delays of up to an hour have tended to join the gondola queue on opening (8.15am), but word has spread and now the early morning queues can be the worst of the day. An alternative, in the form of free buses for those with lift passes, relieves only some of the pressure. If you own a seasonal ski pass, you’ll have VIP access to the gondola lift. In November, as preparation for the upcoming season, the prices of seasonal ski passes are reduced and you can save up to 200 lv. At the end of the ski season in April, the prices are always cheaper.

The uncovered chairs can also be problematic when winds are high, as the closure of the most exposed lifts (towards the summit) reproduces the crush experienced at the gondola. Basically, when the resort is full and the wind is up, expect to wait. And the sooner you adjust to Bulgarian queuing etiquette (if there’s a bare patch of snow in front of you, surge forward), the sooner you’ll be on your run.

Eating and après-ski

As can be expected, food and après-ski entertainment on the mountain comes at a premium; in fact, the discrepancy between what you’ll pay on the slopes and what you’ll pay in the town is greater in Bansko than in many other European resorts. But given that prices are so much lower across the board than those found in Austria, France or Switzerland, this isn’t necessarily such a drain. A Bulgarian-brand beer on the slopes costs around 6 lv, and a proper lunch will cost about 20–30 lv.

Once off the mountain, there’s a wonderful array of cheap eating and drinking options on offer: from tacky UK-themed pubs serving the lager-and-Sky-football crowd, to snug, atmospheric mehanas (traditional taverns) knocking out hearty local specialties in the tangled streets of the old town. Sex shops, outlets for Bulgarian crafts, half-built hotels, traditional timbered houses and grey-stone monasteries complete an atmosphere unique among European ski resorts.

Make it happen

Getting there Hotels and chalets can arrange transfers from Sofia , Plovdiv and Thessaloniki . Alternatively, you can organise your own transfer (try Bansko Express , Sofia Airport Taxis , or Ski Bansko Traventuria ) or brave the Bulgarian bus or rail system.

Where to stay Bansko has many hotels (try Kempinski Hotel Grand Arena for luxe accommodation, or Hotel Avalon if you’re on a budget) and chalets.

Lifts and equipment There are lots of rental outlets in the higher reaches of the town; prices are mostly comparable (and service relaxed and efficient) across the board. Lift passes ( 400 lv/€205 for six days ; student discount available) can be arranged in advance through your chalet or online via Ski Point . Passes can also be bought from the gondola at the foot of the mountain, but expect to queue.

Other Bulgarian resorts

Pamporovo Located in the Rodopi Mountains (240km from Sofia), Pamporovo is lower than Bansko, and offers a similar blend of beginner, intermediate and advanced terrain. Prices are also similar, while the network is slightly smaller and milder conditions are more common.

Chepelare Just 10km from Pamporovo, Chepelare is a smaller resort best suited to family ski holidays. With only 20km of piste and a small lift network, the low prices may not be enough to satisfy more advanced thrill-seekers. Mechi Chal, the longest ski slope in Bulgaria (almost 6km) is situated here, and it is certified by FIS for world skiing competitions.

Borovets Located in the Rila Mountains (72km from Sofia), Borovets is Bulgaria’s oldest ski resort, and was the largest before Bansko muscled in. Its 58km of piste range similar altitudes and difficulty levels to Bansko, and prices are comparable.

Vitosha Basic facilities and accommodation are compensated for by Vitosha’s lower prices and its accessibility (it’s a mere 10km from Sofia).

Bansko ski resort

The Bulgarian ski resort of Bansko remained relatively unknown until as recently as the start of this century, but that all changed in the year 2000 when a gondola was built linking the atmospheric old mountain village to the ski areas, creating one of the biggest lift-served verticals in Eastern Europe. The international ski community quickly took note.

As popularity grew, huge investment followed and development was prolific. More than half a dozen fast quad and six-seat chairlifts were installed along with dozens of new hotels, including some of the region’s first 5-star offerings.

This construction boom slowed for a time, due in part to the economic downturn and in part to the controversy of illegal construction taking place on land designated within the Pirin National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But these issues appear to have been largely resolved and Bansko is growing again.

Today modern Bansko is a very unique ski destination, with a huge range of accommodation and a modern ski area, but also the attraction of an ancient village with 19th-century stone buildings, cobbled streets and a clock tower that’s been ticking for more than 150 years.

Bansko is situated on the River Glazne in the northeastern foothills of the Pirin Mountains, 165km (103 miles) south of Bulgaria’s capital Sofia and 50km (31 miles) east of the border with Macedonia. It lies north of Pirin National Park and its highest mountain, Mt Vihren, peaks at 2,914m (9,560ft).

Resort Data:

On the slopes.

The runs at Bansko are relatively evenly divided among ability levels – a third of the slopes are suitable for beginners, while intermediates and advanced skiers both have around 35% of the slopes to themselves.

Skiers can take the Bunderishka gondola up to the slopes from the town. At the top, there are nursery slopes for beginners to explore, while a blue run leads from here back to the resort base. Further up the mountain there is a greater choice of runs and a terrain park for freestylers. The longest run at Bansko is 10km (6 miles), although it does rely on snow cover right down to village level, which can be problematic at the end of the season.

More than 40 snow cannons cover most of the slopes with artificial snow, boosting the resort's natural base and consequently improving its snow reliability. The ski season here is relatively comparable to most resorts in the Alps, with the slopes generally open from mid-December to mid-April.

The Ulen Ski and Snowboard School is the largest in the region, offering ski and snowboard lessons for all levels. For those without their own skis, equipment hire is available at many stores located near the gondola, on Ulitsa Pirin.

Other snow sports facilities here include cross-country trails and a rare biathlon training centre, which has played host to major international competitions.

These markings are put in place to ensure the safety of all visitors. Veering off-trail or skiing out of bounds can expose you to unnecessary risks, including avalanches and uneven terrain.

5. Use Appropriate Safety Gear: Utilize appropriate safety gear for skiing, such as helmets, goggles, and properly fitting ski boots. For hiking, wear sturdy footwear with good traction and consider using trekking poles for stability, especially on challenging terrains.

6. Be Aware of Avalanche Risk: In the wintertime, it’s important to be aware of the risk of avalanches if you plan on venturing off-piste or skiing in backcountry areas. Stay updated on avalanche reports and conditions, and always ski with a buddy. Consider taking avalanche safety courses to learn essential skills and knowledge.

7. Respect Nature and Wildlife: Bansko is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, and it’s important to respect and protect the environment. Stay on marked trails, refrain from littering, and observe wildlife from a safe distance. Do not feed or approach wild animals, as this can cause harm to both you and the animals.

8. Stay Informed and Seek Local Advice: Stay informed about any potential risks or hazards specific to the area. Consult with local authorities, park rangers, or experienced guides for up-to-date information and advice before setting out on a hike or skiing off-piste.

9. Take Breaks and Rest: Know your body’s limits and take regular breaks to rest and replenish your energy. Pushing through exhaustion can lead to poor judgment and increased risk of injury.

10. Carry Emergency Contacts and a Mobile Phone: Have emergency contacts readily available and carry a fully charged mobile phone with you in case of emergencies. Ensure that you have a clear understanding of the local emergency services and know how to seek assistance if needed.

By following these safety tips, you can minimize risks and enjoy a safe and memorable experience while hiking and skiing in Bansko. Remember to always prioritize safety and be responsible for your own well-being and that of those around you.

Hneď druhý deň som si kúpil baterku a na nočné expedície som ju brával so sebou.

  • Many lenders have restricted transactions with Moscow, curbing payment options for Chinese firms.
  • Alternative channels include money brokers, and the possible use of cryptocurrencies.
  • Insider Today

Tighter US scrutiny of Beijing's trade ties is sending domestic exporters underground, Reuters exclusively reported on Monday.

Chinese firms involved in the Russian market are reportedly finding alternative ways to facilitate trade with its Northern neighbor, as they no longer can rely on big banks to finance such settlements.

"Transactions between China and Russia will increasingly go through underground channels," a Chinese trade body head told Reuters: "But these methods carry significant risks."

    Related stories

For instance, one unnamed Chinese manufacturer told the outlet that it may have to turn to currency brokers operating on the border with Russia, as they could potentially help settle payments.

The search for alternatives is a direct consequence of Washington's growing concern over trade between the two capitals. China's commercial shipments have been accused of supplying Russia's military industry, spurring US lawmakers to start drafting sanctions against Chinese banks that facilitate this trade.

"I reiterated our serious concern about the PRC providing components that are powering Russia's brutal war of aggression against Ukraine," Secretary of State Antony Blinken said of the People's Republic of China last week.

In the face of possible sanctions, a number of financial institutions have voluntarily restricted Russia-related transactions , including some of China's biggest state banks .

For exporters, this has also meant a pullback from Russia's market, given the challenges of pursuing business outside of official channels, Reuters said.

For those who try, money brokers are one option. Cryptocurrency could also provide an answer, even though the asset has been banned in China since 2021 . But the restriction hasn't stopped China's strained investors from seeking out crypto this year, and could help exporters bypass know-your-customer channels.

While some smaller banks are still open to facilitating business between the countries, its led to months-long queues for those who want to open an account — an issue seen among dealers on both sides of the border.

Lenders in China aren't the only ones rethinking their ties with Russia. Restrictions have also tightened in countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, and even Austria, all resulting from rising US sanctions rhetoric .
