Florence is one of my favorite cities in Italy and one we thoroughly enjoy with our kids.

We spent an entire summer there when they were little, an amount of time that allowed us to really experience this wonderful and historical Italian town, and we loved it so much, we now go every time we can.

This year alone, we have already been three times!

So when I tell you I have tips for visiting Florence with kids, you know I mean it!

All you find in this guide is based on our first-hand experience of the place, plus the excellent tips of local friends who gave us the inside scoop!

Florence appears on all Italy travel itineraries, often recommended as a stop for art lovers.

In this guide, we share why we think Florence is fabulous for families too and why we highly recommend including some time in Florence when planning your family trip to Italy!

Florence is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy and a place everyone should see while visiting Italy.

It is famous for art, history and food but it is also a very family-friendly city.

Some of the best reasons to visit Florence with kids are:

  • Florence City center is UNESCO World Heritage Site: walking here is like waking in living history, a wonderful way to get history come to life for little kids!
  • Florence has lovely child-friendly museums that make it easy to mix learning and fun
  • Florence is full of attractions but compact, so it is easy to go around even with little legs in tow
  • Florence has a historic carousel and a fantastic park, Parco delle Cascine, that are sure to conquer adults and kids
  • Florence is in a perfect position to explore the rest of Tuscany by train and makes a great base if you want to explore yet avoid driving to a new destination every day.

Most families stay in Florence 1-3 days.

  • One day in Florence allows you to get a feel for the city center and see one museum – find here >> our one day in Florence itinerary
  • Two days in Florence give you time to see both Uffizi and Accademia, too overcoming if visited in one day
  • Three days in Florence allow you to explore the city, see a couple of museums and take a class
  • More than three days allow you to also take day trips for the Tuscan countryside. Find here>>> the best day trips from Florence for families

I believe 3 full days is a perfect length of time to spend in Florence with kids.

Florence is a family-friendly city.

However, like many historical Italian towns, it can pose some challenges to parents visiting with babies or toddlers.

Mostly, you need to remember:

You want the right stroller – Florence has cobbles, and historical streets that can be hard on stroller wheels.

I highly recommend you bring a stroller (find my tips for using strollers in Italy here ) if you are visiting Florence with toddlers.

You will find yourself walking extensively in Florence and I suggest you opt for one with well-cushioned wheels rather than a tiny one.

The extra bulk will be compensated by the extra protection to your child and your back – cobbles and potholes are everywhere in Florence and make for a bumpy ride.

A baby carrier will be super handy – For museums or if you are visiting Florence with a baby, a baby carrier is the best choice.

Parks and playgrounds in Florence worth knowing:

  • ParcoGiochi Lungarno Santa Rosa
  • Parco Giochi Piazza Massimo d’Azeglio
  • Merry Go Round in Piazza della Repubblica (see below)
  • Giardino di Villa Strozzi
  • Giardino dell’Orticultura
  • Parco delle Cascine, where you find a family-friendly swimming pool club offering day passes, perfect for hot summer days!

Biblioteca delle Oblate mentioned above is a good place doe a rainy day in Florence with a toddler and has good baby-changing facilities

Most restaurants in Florence will cater to a toddler making a smaller portion of whatever is on the menu or simple pasta with tomato sauce on request. This also applies to restaurants without kids’ menus as such

Florence has strict occupancy rules in hotels: make sure you book a bed for your baby or inform the hotel if you are bringing your own pack and play, to make sure you get a suitable room.

You can find more tips about traveling around Italy with babies and toddlers here.

Take a walk in Florence city center

Florence has a compact and historical city center that is a delight for kids and adults.

In one morning or less, you can see some of Florence’s main attractions such as Santa Maria Novella, Florence’s Duomo, Ponte Vecchio and Piazza della Signoria without exhausting yourself and, even better, you can do it by letting your kids lead the way!

firenze family tour

Florence city center is small so even without following a detailed itinerary, you will likely stumble upon many of its highlights.

Guiding us around Florence was one of the things our kids loved the most.

Occasionally, just occasionally, you will have to stir the towards the attractions below but truly, wandering around Florence City center is the best way to enjoy the city.

Good to know! If you have small kids, they may enjoy our FREE Florence scavenger hunt and activity sheets. You can find it here!

Climb the tower of Florence’s Duomo (or its dome)

Florence’s most distinctive and iconic landmark is Florence’s Duomo, Santa Maria del Fiore.

Kids will love the multicolored marble of its facade, tower and baptistry and the idea of climbing up to the top!

There are two climbs you can choose from: the dome, from where you see the tower, and the tower…. from which you see the dome!

A climb to the top of the duomo excites children who love heights; however, it is best to know that the steps are many and there are some narrow passages.

Florence Duomo

While fine for older kids, it can be tiring and tricky with a toddler.

Personally, I recommend this climb only if you are comfortable with high and narrow places and do not have an antsy child who may need extra supervision.

Primary school age and up would be my recommendation.

Advance booking is essential. You can book directly with the duomo or via GetYourGuide (easier interface but a third-party site)

Fun fact kids will love : The large dome of Florence Duomo, at the time of its built, was the largest dome in the world and still is the largest of its kind!

See Michelangelo’s David at Accademia Gallery

The David by Michelangelo is one of the most famous and visited art pieces in Italy.

Preserved in the beautiful Academia Gallery, it is high on the list of must-see things in Florence and school-age kids are often interested in it because it’s been covered in art class in school.

Despite its popularity, the Academia Museum is easy to visit and you don’t need a tour or m much planning to enjoy it.

How to visit : Tickets are available online on the official Accademia Museum.

Advance booking is recommended but, at the time writing, not essential. Official site: https://www.galleriaaccademiafirenze.it/en/

Should the official site be sold out, you can get tickets on GetYourGuide or Tiqets , official resellers. If buying on tiqets, use code MAMALOVESITALY for a discount!

Address: Via Ricasoli, 58/60, 50129 Firenze FI, Italy Map: https://goo.gl/maps/LdjjLw2Xj2ZDnr9T6

David statue in front of Palazzo vecchio in Piazza della Signoria in Florence

Good to know: close to Accademia, you also have the Selfie Museum (see below), which can be a great treat for the kids afterward!

Top Tip! If you have a little kids and cannot take one more museum, in Florence, you can see an incredible replica of the David right in front of Palazzo Vecchio in Piazza della Signoria. It is free!

See the free art in Loggia del Lanzi in Piazza della Signoria

Florence is like an open-air museum and this is even more true in Piazza della Signoria, where you find stunning Loggia dei Lanzi.

Sculptures in Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence

Loggia dei Lanzi is a portico overlooking the historic Piazza della Signoria and it is filled with stunning sculptures and statues.

They are free to see and a great way to introduce some art in your day, without having to tackle one of Florence’s big museums with kids!

Top tip: this is a great place for Percy Jackson lovers! Get them to notice the statues: can they find Hercules? And Perseus? Ask them what other characters they can recognize, there are a few (with info panels to double check your guesses)!

Often lesser-known than Palazzo Vecchio or the Neptune Fountain, also on this square, Loggia di Lanzi is a Florence highlight I highly recommend you seek out.

Walk across the river on the historical Ponte Vecchio Bridge

Not far from the duomo lies another one of Florence’s most famous landmarks, Ponte Vecchio.

Photo of Ponte Vecchio in Florence with a pigeon in the foreground

Ponte Vecchio is a historic bridge that connects the two sides of the Arno river, so Florence city center with Oltrarno Neighborhood, and has a peculiarity.

Rather than a normal bridge, Ponte Vecchio is like a road, flanked by shops on both sides!

For little kids, the most interesting thing about Ponte Vecchio will probably be the opportunity of spotting river animals from its entrance.

Older kids will no doubt marvel at this peculiar bridge and will love to learn elements of its story such as the following:

  • Ponte Vecchio dates back to 1345
  • It was the only bridge in Florence not destroyed by bombs during the II world war
  • The first shops on Ponte Vecchio were grocers and butchers. In the XVI century, they were kicked out and the place was given to Goldsmiths and jewelers, still nowadays trading on the bridge.

You can find here >>> f un and interesting facts about Ponte Vecchio

See the chocolate waterfall in Venchi

Venchi is a famous chocolatier and gelato shop but the reason why we include it in this guide of the best things to do in Florence with kids goes beyond their food offering.

Their shop on Via dei Calzaiuoli always catches our kids’ attention because it has a chocolate waterfall occupying a whole wall!

Never fails to gt a ‘wow’ if kids don’t expect it!

Have a spin on the carousel at Piazza della Repubblica

Piazza della Repubblica is a lovely piazza in Florence City center with historical carousel kids love.

The piazza hosting the merry-go-round is one of the most ancient in Florence so coming to play here is a treat for both kids and sightseeing loving parents!

The merry-go-round welcomes kids and adults alike: around it, you also often find street performers and buskers, making the square one of the liveliest in town for children.

Address: Piazza della Repubblica, 50123 Firenze FI, Italy Map : https://goo.gl/maps/nNAxbxpmc5oBK3GD6

Good to know : on the same square you find the department store La Rinascente. A good address to know if you need a bathroom break as their toilets are clean and well-equipped!

Piazza della Repubblica carousel: a favorite stop when visiting Florence with kids

Run around Piazza Santa Maria Novella

Florence has many wonderful squares and one of the most beautiful and family-friendly is Piazza Santa Maria Novella, close to the train station of the same name

The square takes its name from the church of Santa Maria Novella that dominates the landscapes.

There are many things to do with kids in this square. Some of the highlights are:

  • The church of Santa Maria Novella itself, one of the most important in Florence and with a stunning facade of multi color marbles that will capture the attention of everyone in the family

Top tip: challenge your kids to find the astronomical items on the facade: there is a sundial and an armillary sphere, an early astronomical device!

  • The Officina Profumo Santa Maria Novella , said to be the world’s oldest pharmacy and now a wonderful museum and shop where to smell and buy perfumes and beauty products. A lovely stop for older kids especially.

The piazza itself, vast and perfect for little kids and toddlers to run around and has lovely benches for you to rest!

You can also stop for a juice or gelato at the cafe’ on the piazza.

Marvel at the wonderful Boboli Gardens

The Boboli Gardens are a large, wonderful monumental garden on the Oltrarno side of the river.

The gardens belong to Palazzo Pitti and are not a public park but a manicured space to marvel at what the art of gardening can do.

The Boboli Gardens are magical for kids and adults however, it is important to know that this is not a public park with playgrounds and kids’ attractions as such.

To kick a ball and let loose, the beautiful Parco delle Cascine is a better option!

Catch a view from Piazzale Michelangelo

Piazzale Michelangelo is a large, panoramic square where to catch beautiful views over Florence.

You can reach it by bus or on foot, climbing up beautiful, easy to manage steps from the banks of the Arno river and it is a place that usually leaves a strong impression on children (and adults!)

The square is effectively a large parking space now but the view it offers over the city is stunning!

Good to know if you have kids who love cars! Piazzale Michelangelo is the starting point of a Ferrari Tour of Florence. The cars are not for kids but they are always parked on the square and never fail to impress car-loving children. If the place is not too busy, the owners often allow you to take pictures with them, something my car-crazy 5 year old adored!

Have a break in Biblioteca delle Oblate

A lovely place in Florence city center where to find refuge in case of rain is the library ‘Biblioteca delle Oblate’

This is a fantastic library with a large children’s section and a handy place to know if you are visiting Florence with a baby or toddler as they have good changing facilities!

Visit one of Florence’s child-friendly museums

Florence has many child-friendly museums that are easier to visit and more enjoyable for kids than the Uffizi, which is stunning but vast.

Some of the best kid-friendly museums in Florence are:

  • Interactive Leonardo Museum (a Florence with kids favorite for us), perfect for science lovers and construction-loving kids.
  • Museum of Illisions, great for all ages
  • Stibbert Museums, with full armors!
  • Museo dei Ragazzi at Palazzo Vecchio on Piazza della Signoria, with special tours for kids: a wonderful way to learn about Florence’s most important building
  • Galileo Museums, perfect for lovers of the genius of Galileo and astronomy studies
  • Selfie Museum, new and super fun for when you want a different type of museum experience

See the cute Fontana del Porcellino

Fontana del Porcellino (lit. Fountain of the Piggy) is a bit of an institution in Florence.

Fontana del Porcellino in Florence (fountain sculpted in the shape of a wild boar)

It is at the entrance of Mercato Nuovo, in Florence city center and it is fun for kids because of its animal shape.

Despite its name, however, the statue is not of a cute piggy but of a spikey wild boar kids usually love!

The ‘porcellino’ is said to bring luck so you often find a bit of line of people waiting to touch its nose.

While not worth a long wait, it is a cute stop for kids and it is in such a central part of Florence, you are likely to pass it anyway.

Browse (and have a bite) in pretty Todo Modo bookshops

If you and your kids love bookshops, then you will love a stop at Todo Modo and Todo Modo Dila’.

Todo Modo is a beautiful cafe and bookshop in Florence city center, with lovely decor and bites (titles in Italian and Engish) and it is a great place if you have older kids or you want a nice place for a quick bite.

Todo Modo DiLa’ is their sister library on the other side of the river and while it has no food, it has a wondeful kids’ section with books in Italian and English.

Near Todo Modo Dila’ you have Gelateria La Carraia so my recommendation is to have a bit in Todo Modo, cross the river, and indulge in a gelato + children’s bookshop stop!

Visit the Uffizi with kids (or not!)

One of the big decisions to make when planning a visit to Florence with kids is whether to bring them to the Uffizi Gallery or not.

The Uffizi Gallery is a stunning, huge, traditional art museum. As such, it is perfect for adults who enjoy large art collections and a must for those who want to see masterpieces of Florence Reinassance.

For kids, it is a little less of a paradise as overwhelm easily sets in.

The best way to make this decision is to know what to expect.

The Uffizi Galleries in Florence are one of the great museums of the world.

Its masterpieces include invaluable art works such as the Birth of Venus by Botticelli, Tondo Doni by Michelangelo, Bacchus by Caravaggio, Mary Jesus and St John the Baptist by Raphael, just to name the few most famous.

The Galleries are a must for art lovers; however, they can be hard on kids.

A little bit like the Vatican Museums in Rome, the Uffizi are a traditional museum and a very busy one.

This means that kids cannot touch anything, there is no interactive element to it and the crowds can make the hard to take.

The best ways to visit the Uffizi with kids are:

Go self guided – by using the kids’ printables available on the galleries’ website, the most budget friendly wat to tackle the Uffizi Galleries with kids.

Go guided, with the aid of a family tour – this option is pricier but allows to visit the galleries in a time-efficient way and get kids to learn with a guide who is there just for them and can make the works engaging and fascinating.

Recommended Uffizi Tours for families:

LivTours Uffizi Family Experience: a fabulous, private tour with a kid-centered guide who helps tackling the crowds and building a kid-friendly, interesting museum itinerary. Info here >> LivTours private Uffizi Tour for kids .

Uffizi Tours for kids with Martina by Mariaclaudia Tours (enquire via Facebook) >> a great, budget-friendly tour with a lovely local guide to help your kids engage with this difficult museum. tell them you found her on MamaLovesItaly, she knows us!

How to visit: advance booking is essential. Official tickets have timed entrance and allow to avoid long lines. Address: Piazzale degli Uffizi, 6, 50122 Firenze FI, Italy Map https://goo.gl/maps/xFERmF3eQGmhHtSEA

Visit the Italian soccer museum in Coverciano

Outside of the center this is a fantastic museum for soccer lovers.

If you are staying in Florence a while, keep an eye out for their kids’ events and opportunities to play with Italian Soccer federation coaches! Web address: https://www.figc.it/it/museo-del-calcio/

One of the absolute best things to doing Florenc with kids who love soccer!

Take a gelato making class

A gleato-making class is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon with kids in Florence and learn about what makes gelato special (and different from ice cream!)

If you take the class at the start of your stay, you never have to worry about about how to spot the best gleato as your kids will know!

The gleato class I recommend in Florence is with the fun Vetulio Bondi gelato makers. You can book him via LivTours here >>> Gelato class in Florence for kids

italian gelato in traditional gelato shop in Rome

Take a pasta making class with kids in Florence city center

Making pasta is fin for kids as the activity is hands on and the result delicious!

Taking one ifn Florence is also a fantastic way to tap into Tuscany cuisine, among the very best in Italy and to have a nice meal in a relaxed atmosphere, away from the crowds!

A great pasta class you’re sure to love is this one by PastaMania bookable via Viator , which is super fun also for kids and a great family activity.

Learn to make marbled paper with a local artisan

Marbling paper is a traditional Florentine craft and a wonderful activity to do with kids.

Exceptional place for it are:

this laboratory >>> decorazioniepitture.it

Il Papiro paper shop https://www.ilpapirofirenze.com/about-us/

And laboratorio Giannini workshop https://www.giuliogiannini.com/en/

Florence is easy to visit at your own pace.

However, if you are short on time or you want to add context to what you visit, you can choose a family-friendly tour of the city.

I find them to be a good way to get the children engaged and excited about the city, especially if taken early on in your stay.

A good kids’ guide will be able to get children interested in the city and my two always love to recognize places when we pass by them on subsequent days.

They point and scream: ‘I know what that is!’ and then they start recalling what they learned on the tour.

Family tours of Florence are:

Florence walking tour for kids with Michelangelo’s David by Mariaclaudia Tours (tell her Marta from Mama Loves Italy sent you! – a really fun way to explore Florence with kids, with a local guide who will keep them engaged and interested telling them fun and interesting anecdote about the city.

A great way to get them walking without realizing it!

Florence walking tour for families with local guide – a tour for kids and adults to discover Florence city center. Most suited to families with kids age 6 and up due to the length (2.5 hours) and story-driven nature of the tour

Accademia and Michelangelo’s David tour for kids

Skip the line private family tour of the Uffizi Museum

Private Gelato Class in Florence – a fun and hands-on way to learn how to make real Italian gelato

Family-friendly pasta making class in Florence – making pasta is incredibly satisfying and fun for kids as it is very hands and engaging.

This class was highly recommended by me by Lauren, who took a fantastic trip to Italy with her son and shares her full itinerary here !

Kid-friendly Marbled paper workshop in Florence – marbled paper is a traditional craft in Florence and you can see and experience how it is made in Giulio Gannini workshop

Marbled scarf making – a great activity for older kids and their parents, to learn how textiles get marbled and bring home a unique souvenir from Florence

A day on the farm – if you want your kids to spend a day on a farm, learning about the animals, olive oil production and more, then I recommend you look at Fattoria di Maiano , a didactic farm and agriturismo with wonderful activities for kids in Fiesole (immediately outside Florence city center)

Click >>> HERE and find my list of 15 great family-friendly hotels and rentals in Florence (tried and tested!) <<<

There are 4 areas I recommend as the most family-friendly in Florence.

Borgo Ognissanti – Borgo Ognissanti is a lovely area of Florence’s city center.

Close to Ponte Vecchio and palazzo Strozzi, it is immediately beside the busy area of the Duomo and strikes a perfect balance between being a central location yet away from the maddening crowds.

Good family accommodation here Antica Torre di Via Tornabuoni , all offering spacious accommodation for families of up to 7 people.

Duomo area – to be in the heart of everything, there is nothing better than to be in the very center of Florence, so you can walk everywhere and have all the attractions on your doorstep.

This location is particularly suited to families with kids who visit outside of the busiest season and can enjoy this otherwise busy location.

Some nice accommodation options such as Relais Piazza Signoria (mid-range) and Hotel Lungarno (luxury) , Hotel Davanzati (budget)

Oltrarno – Oltrarno is a fabulous Florence neighborhood, close to all attractions but also with a quieter feel that makes is perfect for families, especially in some parts.

Good hotels here are Hotel Palazzo Belfiore and Palazzo San Niccolo’ .

Le Cure – this is my favorite area for longer stays in Florence and anyone who wants to be in a residential area with a local feel.

You will need to get the bus to get into the city center, but this green and family-friendly area is perfect to relax and call Florence home for a few days.

You will be hard-pressed to find a bad meal in Florence.

However, these are some addresses you may enjoy particularly:

  • NeroCarbone Bistrot Toscano, Via del Parione, 43/45r, 50123 Firenze
  • Martare, Via Degli Alfani 93/r, 50121, Firenze

The Florence Tour for Kids and Families with Gelato and Pizza was amazing! Our guide, Martina, was wonderful and super engaging with our children varying in ages between 15 and 9. She created a family interactive game for our tour which kept our children's attention while also sharing a lot of wonderful information about the history of Florence. But our favorite part of the tour was stopping for pizza with a local chef.... he could not have been more welcoming to his establishment and our children loved him! We had the most amazing time in Sorrento and Positano thanks to a private family excursion through Pinocchio Tours during our stop at Naples a week ago. Our wonderful driver, Guido, and lovely guide Martina (who came along last minute, but added so much to our experience) were top notch from pick up to drop off. They took very good care of our kids, ages 4 and 16, making our journey through Sorrento and on to Positano absolutely unforgettable. We were very concerned about time to explore because we had a previous negative experience with our cruise ship leaving part of our family behind, so Guido was very attentive to time and itinerary/route. We could have never gotten to see the sights we did without Pinocchio Tour's private excursion. Thank you all so much! Read more Written June 15, 2023

We were a group of four adults and three children (ages 11, 11, and 9) and our guide (Martina, I think) made the Uffizi Museum fun for all of us. She rightly paid the most attention to the kids and challenged them with games to keep them engaged. They learned a lot, but so did the adults. I think by going into less detail than an adult tour would, and only emphasizing the highlights, we were all able to enjoy the museum. All of us will remember this tour for the rest of our lives. She was extremely quick to get our children on side and it was a fun family night out in Florence, whilst still learning so much about the history. The games and treasure hunt engaged and entrathled our 3 children aged 5, 7 & 11. The pizza & gelato were excellent! Thank you very much Gulia for such a great evening. Our family (14 of us) had ended and we had a few days left to roam Florence. With just the kids (13, 10) I wanted to make sure we were safe during evenings when I found the Florence Tour for Kids/Family Pizza Gelato! We met our guide Giulia by the duomo and realized quickly she was AWESOME! We were lucky to be the only ones on the tour...so she catered to the kids/our interest/needs. Giulia was knowledgeable and kept the kids interested and engaged with a scavenger hunt throughout the city/tour! So fun!!! Amazingly, we happened upon the annual jousting event in Piazza Santa Croce! Pizza and Gelato too...perfection!!! Highly recommended Giulia and this kid friendly tour!!! She had a kids vs. parents scavenger hunt planned, and we had so much fun and learned a lot of really interesting things that we never would have discovered on our own. I can’t say enough about how fun and personable she is. We were fortunate to also have her as our guide for a tour of the Uffizi- she really made our experience in Florence the best part of our entire Italian vacation. Grazie, Rachele! We had the pleasure of having Rachele on two separate tours in Florence, and she is amazing. I have two boys, ages 3 and 6, and they loved Rachele. It can be difficult to keep these two kids entertained and engaged, but Rachele was able to do it. She not only made it fun and interesting for the kids, but we adults had a great time as well! Strike a Pose with Michelangelo’s David

First up on this kid-friendly Florence walking tour, learn about the life of Michelangelo and get that perfect family photo with one of the world's most famous statues: the David. When you enter the gallery in which David stands, you'll immediately notice his height, smooth surface, and famously determined expression which reflects the moments before he went into battle with Goliath in the famous biblical tale.

As you enjoy your moment with this world-famous piece, your guide will explain how Michelangelo heroically carved this masterpiece out of a block of Carrara marble that no other artist wanted to touch. Make sure you take a good look at Michelangelo's hands and feet! They're out of proportion because David was supposed to be placed on top of the Florence Duomo.

The Accademia Gallery is among Florence’s most popular museums and long lines are usually inevitable. Not for you and your family though—we reserve your skip-the-line Accademia tickets ahead of time so you won't waste a moment of your family day in Florence.

Florentine Papermaking Workshop

Did you know that Florentine paper has been revered across Italy since the 16th century? At the next stop on this family-friendly Florence walking tour, watch a traditional papermaking demonstration before you and your kids practice making some yourselves. This hands-on experience is fun and educational for the whole family and teaches children about a lesser-known part of Florentine culture. The kids get their own pieces to keep after showing off their creativity.

Local Life and the Food of Florence

Not only is Florence filled with historic monuments and amazing art, but it’s also home to some of Italy's best food! On your family tour of Florence, you'll visit San Lorenzo Market and learn about some of the most beloved Florentine dishes. The market is actually comprised of two separate areas: the indoor market filled with food stands and tables to sample the local fare, and the outdoor section around the perimeter of the Mercato Centrale building is lined with leather, clothing, and souvenir vendors.

Enjoy the buzz of everyday life in this vibrant local market, and treat your kids to an unusual Florentine snack while you're looking around. Food isn't included so bring a little cash with you, and you guide will be happy to share some recommendations on what to try.

San Lorenzo’s Unfinished Façade

Among his many talents, Michelangelo was a fine architect and he was well-liked by the powerful Medici family who once held vast influence over Florence. In 1516 Michelangelo was hired to put the finishing touches on the splendid San Lorenzo Church, and he had some extravagant plans for it too. However, despite spending a great deal of time and money quarrying the finest marble for his project, the idea was eventually scrapped a few years later and the façade remains uncompleted to this day.

At this point, your kids get to play architect and help out the great artist by creating their own ideas for how this beautiful old church should look

The Iconic Duomo Cathedral

As your guide shares exciting stories of Florence's history, your private walking tour continues towards another of the city's most famous sites. The iconic Duomo is Florence's most recognized landmark, located in the heart of Florence's historical center. Florence's cathedral towers over the city and is topped by a magnificent Renaissance dome designed by Filippo Brunelleschi.

Your guide will take you around the outside of this incredible structure, and you'll learn the amazing story of its construction, which began over 800 years ago! You'll also get a closer look at the famed bronze Baptistry Doors, which depict stunning scenes from the Old Testament.

Delicious Local Gelato

Did you know Florence is the birthplace of Italian ice cream? Invented by Buontalenti during the Renaissance period, gelato was created to serve at a feast for the Grand Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici and its popularity spread like wildfire through Italy. You'll find gelato shops all over Florence, but your guide know exactly which ones make the most delicious ice creams packed with authentic Florentine flavor.

While gelato is not included in the price of the tour, it’s both inexpensive and super-tasty, so you might want to buy more than one! It's the perfect treat on a hot day and a great reward after all that exploring. There's even more rewards here too, as this is where your kids can claim their special prize.

Merry-Go-Round Ride

You'll finish off your family day in Florence with a ride on the famous merry-go-round in Piazza Repubblica. With 20 horses and two gold-painted king’s carriages, the gorgeous carousel is painted in joyful red, blue, and gold hues. It's over 100 years old, so stepping onto this fairground ride is like a little journey back in time!

The Piazza Repubblica is one of the largest and most famous squares in Florence, so it's the ideal place to finish your tour with plenty of places to eat and things to do nearby. Before you say a fond farewell to your guide, make sure you get a few recommendations for the rest of your time in the Florence—all our guides know their cities like the backs of their hands!

Great way to tour Florence with a mixed-age group

We had a wonderful time with our guide, Andres! As a group with 16 in our family ranging from age 5-76, this tour was perfect! Everyone was very appreciative of the skip-the-line tickets to the Galleria dell'Academia (especially when we saw the line!). We got to learn a lot about the David as well as several other pieces by Michelangelo and others before heading out to see many of the most famous sites of Florence. It was 103 degrees F, so we made 2 gelato stops-- one for Sicilian- style and one for the traditional Florentine gelato. The kids loved the carousel (and the special prize at the end). Andres was attentive to everyone and was very conscientious about keeping us in the shade as much as possible. We learned a ton of amazing facts and got good recommendations about what to do/ see/ eat after the tour. Highly recommend!

Lovely guide, but a company seemed unorganized

This was a great tour and our guide was fabulous. Our only complaint is that they were not able to get tickets for the museum part of the tour until later in the day and they did not inform us in advance. Our poor tour guide had us walking in circles trying to kill time. The company could have let us know before and we could have started later. The check in was a bit confusing as well.

Keep reading to learn more about the best things to do in Florence with kids!

Stroll Across Ponte Vecchio

People walk across Ponte Vecchio in Florence.

Ponte Vecchio is a historical bridge in Florence connecting two sides of the Arno river. It’s a charming bridge with interesting Medieval architecture. Additionally, it is more like a road with shops on both sides, which sell everything from jewelry to leather goods. This is one of the most popular tourist attractions in town, so expect it to be crowded.

Little kids will love to spot animals from its entrance while older kids admire the funky shape and learn about its story, including when it wasn’t destroyed by bombs during World War II. You can also enjoy stunning views of the river and the city skyline from the bridge. Once you’ve crossed the bridge, take some time to explore the nearby streets. You’ll find plenty of cafes, restaurants, and boutiques to keep your family busy.

See the Iconic Duomo

A view of the Florence skyline, including the famous Duomo.

One of the first things you need to see when visiting Florence with kids is the Duomo . Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi between 1420 and 1436, this architectural marvel tops the Florence Cathedral and is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. As such, it’s a must for any first-time visitor, and definitely worth visiting with kids! Children will be impressed by the exterior alone, since it’s covered in intricate sculptures. Similarly, the inside is just as impressive, featuring frescoes and relics. Even though there’s often a line, we suggest taking some time to explore this magnificent building. Families with teens can even take a long climb up the dome to get a gorgeous view of the Florence skyline!

While you’re in the area, you should also check out the Baptistery of St. John. This octagonal structure is located right next to the Duomo and it is one of the oldest buildings in Florence. The Baptistery is known for its beautiful bronze doors, created by Ghiberti. Make sure to take a look at these incredible pieces of art. After exploring the Duomo and the Baptistery, walk around Florence and take in all of the sights. There are plenty of museums, churches, and other landmarks to see in this beautiful city. You could easily spend days exploring everything that Florence has to offer with your kids!

Pro Tip: If you’re visiting the Duomo with kids under six and looking for tickets, buy them from the ticket office inside the museum beside the Duomo. Children ages six to eleve n can purchase reduced-price tickets online.

Rub the Nose of Fontana Del Porcellino

Looking for good fortune in Florence? You may find some luck at Fontana Del Porcellino! This statue of a large, wild pig is the crowning glory of Mercato Nuovo, located in the center of Florence. Local legend has it that touching its nose brings good luck. As such, the statue might be worth a quick stop! It’s also a great stop if you’re planning a walking tour with your family. Certainly, it’s one of the best free things to do and see in Florence with kids!

Florence is known for its art, history, and culture. So it’s only right you visit a museum while you’re in town. Here are our favorite options!

It’s especially fantastic for kids because it’s a sensory experience, so little ones can touch and interact with most of what’s on display! There are four sections for them to explore: earth, water, fire, and air. They can also see real-size, functioning models including machines of war, flight, and engineering. Plus, there’s an immersive audio guide, which you can purchase beforehand to give you more background information.

Galileo Museum

Inside the large entrance to Galileo Museum, with a huge skylight overhead.

Galileo Museum is one of the best things to do in Florence with kids who have an inquisitive mind! Focusing on all things Galileo Galilei, the museum walks visitors through his various inventions, including telescopes and microscopes, all the while highlighting the story of the astronomer’s life. It’s one of few museums in Florence you’ll be able to attend without waiting in line, and you can probably tackle its tiny interior in an hour or so. But don’t let this place’s size fool you! As a treasure trove of gadgets, children will be entertained at every corner. There’s even a hands-on area where kids can play with some of Galileo’s creations. Visit the gift shop after, and you’ll go home with a totally unique souvenir!

Palazzo Strozzi + Museum

Located within a stunning Renaissance palace, The Palazzo Strozzi is a dynamic cultural center offering a variety of exhibits and events. Though it may not be the most interesting for toddlers or younger kids, it’ll definitely be a hit with teens or older children! Upon arrival, little ones will receive a unique “children’s explorer’s bag,” which comes with torches, pens, and paper games to make the experience more enjoyable.

With a rotating selection of modern and contemporary art exhibits, you’ll always discover something new and exciting here! In the past, the museum has showcased artists like Natalia Goncharova and Ai WeiWei. Throughout the various exhibits, there are also several rooms where kids can play.

Enroll in a Kid-Friendly Class

Whether your kids are interested in art, history, or cooking, there are plenty of educational opportunities in Florence that make learning fun. Here are a few of our favorite classes for families!

Cooking Class

A young child cuts a piece of cheese, while taking a cooking lesson in Florence with their family.

What better way to experience Florence than by enjoying its delicious cuisine? Even parents with picky eaters will find food their kids are willing to eat and help make! Taking a cooking class in Florence is a wonderful way to bond as a family and learn more about the city’s diverse culinary traditions. With local companies such as Mama Florence, Eating Europe , and Florence Cooking Classes , families can learn how to make gelato, fresh pasta, and more delicacies in an intimate and personalized setting. In the end, you’ll be able to dig into your delicious creations, and then brag that you’ve now prepared an authentic meal in one of the greatest cities in the world!

Viator also offers a Florence Cooking Class: Learn How to Make Gelato and Pizza . In this cooking class led by a traditional Italian chef, families can learn how to make Italian pizza and gelato. You’ll gain important insight during the beginning of the class, then prepare your own final products. At the end of the school day, you’ll take home a recipe booklet filled with things you learned that day to continue your schooling back home.

GetYourGuide also offers a Florence: Cooking with Kids 3-Hour Experience to help families learn how to make traditional homemade Italian pizza and gelato. Led by a funny and passionate chef, it’s a wonderful way to let kids express their creativity and culinary skills. With a simple recipe, families will learn to reproduce authentic Italian pizza in their own oven at home. Using the same pizza dough, you’ll also learn how to make savory croissants, perfect for appetizers or as an accompaniment to drinks.

Marble Paper Class

Two kids, with an instructor, learn to make marble art while in Florence.

When visiting Florence for the first time, be sure to take a marble paper class with your kids. Though it’ll be different than all the museums and cultural attractions, it’s equally as fun! This is a unique opportunity to get your hands dirty and learn how to make beautiful works of art using only marble paper and a few simple tools. Ideal for families with kids who are older than six, the classes are small and intimate, so little ones will have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and get help from their instructor. Classes typically last two or three hours, and all materials are included. You’ll leave the class with your own beautiful creation, as well as the knowledge and skills to make more.

Many local providers offer this class, and you can even take a class with a local artist like Giulio Giannini or Francesca Vannini.

Browse the San Lorenzo Market

Inside the San Lorenzo Market, featuring a variety of vendors in a covered area.

Explore the smells and sights of Florence at the San Lorenzo Market! Located in a historic, cast-iron building, the market, also known as Mercato Centrale, embodies both the old and new Florence. Here, the bustle of contemporary life meets ancient Italian tradition. Do as the Italians do, and spend a few hours touring the market, sampling prosciutto, cheese, and anything else your family can get its hand on! If you’d prefer a full meal, however, there’s also a wonderful Sicilian restaurant on the second floor. Plus, a variety of stalls selling pasta and to-go meals like Lampredotto, a type of fish sandwich. What an amazing place to browse clothing shops and familiarize yourself with the city!

Plus, Don’t Miss These Other Markets in Florence for Families

A large market is set up in the piazza in front of the Duomo of Florence, selling paintings and other wares.

Whether it’s for food, clothes, or souvenirs, there are a few other markets in Florence that you won’t want to miss on your family vacation. Firstly, save time to visit Mercato Nuovo , a smaller market located in the center of the city. Here, you’ll find souvenirs, clothes, and other items to bring home with you. Then, don’t forget to check out the bargaining market located next to the Ponte Vecchio. You can find some great deals on souvenirs and other items here. With so many options, there’s bound to be something everyone in your family enjoys!

Enjoy a Stroll or a Picnic at the Boboli Gardens

Left Image: A dad holds his young son on his shoulder, while strolling the Boboli Gardens on a rainy day. Right Image: A young boy looks through a fence and the pond in the Boboli Gardens.

Families looking to enjoy a leisurely stroll or picnic will love The Boboli Gardens. Located behind the Pitti Palace, this tranquil oasis is one of the most amazing open-air museums in Florence! It’s perfect for an afternoon stroll, as beautiful flora wrap around statues and other priceless artworks. Though toddlers and young kids can run around too, be aware it’s not very stroller-friendly. Still, kids will love seeing the mermaid grotto, star-shaped fort, ponds, and various sculptures!

If you really want an amazing view, however, you’ll have to climb to the top of the observation tower. From there, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city, including the famous Duomo!

Stop for a Break in a Piazza

Florence has plenty of piazzas, aka town squares, to stop in and take a break from sightseeing! With cute cafes, street performers, and more, these are great places to let kids roam and relax. Here are two of our favorite options for families!

Piazza della Repubblica

A young girl sits in a carousel seat in Piazza della Repubblica.

It’s also home to an antique carousel, one of the most photographed sights in Florence! If you’re traveling to Florence with kids, especially toddlers or young kids, you can’t miss taking a ride and snapping a few pictures.

Afterward, explore the area and its quaint shops and cafes, and maybe stop for a coffee or a gelato. Giubbe Rosse Cafe boasts an impressive history, as it was a meeting place for intellectuals up until the 20th century. At night, watch the entire square come to life with street performers and live music!

Piazza della Signoria

Some curiosities.

Birthplace of the renaissance:.

Florence is often referred to as the “birthplace of the Renaissance” due to its pivotal role in the flourishing of art, science, and culture during the 15th and 16th centuries. Great masters like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Botticelli, and Galileo Galilei lived and worked in Florence, contributing to a period of immense creativity.

The Ponte Vecchio:

The Ponte Vecchio is one of the world’s most famous bridges and is unique because of the shops that line its sides. Traditionally, these shops were occupied by goldsmiths and jewelers. The bridge also survived World War II when much of Florence was destroyed, making it a symbol of resilience.

The Medici Family Tour in Florence includes the tour of Medici Chapels . They house the New Sacristy designed by Michelangelo and the tombs of the Grand Dukes. The beautiful inlays in Florentine mosaic provide a dazzling splendor to the chapels. It actually reaches its highest expression here, thanks to the use of porphyries, granites, mother-of-pearls, lapis lazuli and corals. Furthermore, this tour includes the Museum of Palazzo Medici . It was designed by architect Michelozzo and it was the Medici’s first residence. Michelangelo also lived here for a while. The Magi Chapel by Benozzo Gozzoli perfectly portrays the members of the Medici House. It is one of the most significant examples of Renaissance art. We also visit of San Lorenzo Church . It was the Medici family church and was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi. This is the burial place of the Medici ancestors, Giovanni di Bicci and Piccarda Boeri, but also of Piero, father of Lorenzo the Magnificent. In front of the high altar we see the tomb of Cosimo the Elder , also know as “Cosimo pater patriae” (“Father of the nation”). The church also houses the pulpits by Donatello, the tabernacle by Desiderio da Settignano, and much more.

OTHER 2 MEDICI PLACES YOU DON’T HAVE TO MISS (LONGER TOUR)

The Convent of San Marco  was built under the patronage of Cosimo the Elder to promote the arts and earn a place in Heaven. Friar Beato Angelico painted the cells of the friars with frescoes. Nonetheless, the convent is related to the controversial figure of Friar Girolamo Savonarola. He founded a republican state in the late 15th century, openly fighting the Medici, and was condemned to the stake by Pope Alessandro VI Borgia. It’s a must of our Medici Family Tour in Florence! Palazzo Vecchio was originally the Public Palace of Florence. However, it was converted into the Medici house by Cosimo I in 1537. In its great rooms we will see how the power of the Grand Duke was extolled thanks to a mythological program. His virtues, his force and his magnificence were depicted by artists like Giorgio Vasari, who mainly spent his life glorifying his patron Cosimo I. Cosimo I de’ Medici was also the creator of the Jewish ghetto of Florence , erected by him in 1571.

Why you choose this Tour!

  • Because without the Medici the world would not have the Renaissance.
  • Because Michelangelo spent many years working for them.
  • Because the Medici put the bases of the modern banking system.

Fiesole Family tour

A new way for families and children to visit the town, an explorer’s backpack, and an app to discover the beauties and history of Fiesole for yourselves.

The weekend of 28-29 May will be full of surprises, with the launching of a kit and an app dedicated to families of residents and tourists who wish to visit Fiesole and discover the history of its territory by themselves in a fun way. Thanks to specially-devised trails created on the territory, families will be guided on their tour and children will become town explorers in their own right.

An itinerary divided into 10 stopping-points dedicated to exploration and discovery: a map, 10 postcards and a notebook for the families, these are the tools all adults and children will be able to use to journey through art and history. For digital natives there is also the chance to download a free app for smartphone or tablet. Its interactive itineraries will provide yet another guide to the territory, with riddles, games and many other things.

Everything is divided up into two age-groups, 6-9 and 10-13, and is available in both Italian and English .

The kits can be rented free of charge at the Tourist Information Office (Ufficio Informazioni Turismo) of Fiesole. Each family can visit the center and surroundings of Fiesole by themselves and at their own speed, handing the kit back within 3 hours of renting it. The App can be downloaded on Google Play and Apple Store . So, it will all begin on the weekend of 28-29 May! For that weekend, we recommend you book the kit.

Fiesole Family tour is the fruit of the cultural heritage appreciation program organized by the Museo degli Innocenti and the Associazione Mus.e, in collaboration with the Borough of Fiesole and Fondazione Primo Conti , and specially targeted at children and teenagers. The proposal is supported by exceptional partners: besides the Region of Tuscany , which sustained the project, a fundamental contribution has been made by F.I.L.A., the leading manufacturer of GIOTTO children’s colouring and art materials, and the app has been created by D’Uva Workshop , a highly-reputed company in the field of cultural heritage technology. Family Tour is part of the joint project of Museums of Fiesole, Fondazione Primo Conti and Museo degli Innocenti (the historical Foundling Hospital Museum), “Museums with a view”.

Available for free in Italian and English at the Tourist Information Office (Ufficio Informazioni Turismo) of Fiesole.

”What can we do in Tuscany as a Family?”

Piero and Elena  have heard this question over and over again. The  solution is a private family tour with an extra eye towards helping family members of all ages find common ground, shared laughter and create brand new treasured memories.  Our   focus is on taking the family in the great outdoors of Tuscany, out of the city, museums and monuments  for a great day of action & excitement.

Kids get excited about racing each other and making the top of the hill, while parents have time, with this “slow form of travel”, to admire a landscape that has inspired artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Everyone will find a flavour that suits their palate be it a Chianti Riserva, organic cheeses, baked sweets or a double decker gelato cup.

The itinerary varies according to personal interest, skill level and any special requests. While creating a fun filled ride for the all Family, we focus on making use of low-traffic back roads in quiet tranquil settings, highlighting the beauty of the countryside. WHAT OUR GUESTS SAY

An amazing day and memories for a lifetime!

My family and I just returned from our 2 week Italy holiday and can say that our day spent with Piero, Elena and Costa was by far our most amazing experience! My review starts at the beginning…

Fantastic Family bike tour

I have nothing but good things to say about Bike Florence&Tuscany. Four of us did a day trip ride San Gimignano to Siena on November the 2nd. Piero treated us as a private group so we could enjoy the entire day as a family trip! Elena led the group and the ride was fabulous. The roads and scenery were beautiful, colors were typical of Tuscan fall and traffic was light. We always felt safe and Piero did a good job supporting us with the van. The day starts with a good hour for visiting San Gimignano, the so-called Medieval Manhattan. The first part of the ride ends in Monteriggioni, the small, well-preserved medieval village we met biking towards Siena. After a brief stop to see the village the ride continued, ending near Siena. The guys took us to the city entrance by van to avoid us having to face the busy traffic and.. for a little rest before the long walk around Siena. The whole BF&T team was extremely accommodating, kind, and knowledgable. The bikes themselves were top notch. I would recommend Bike Florence&Tuscany to everyone: this was one of the highlights of our whole Italian vacation for my family, who had come to Florence to see me after a long absence! Thank you Piero&Elena for making all this come true!

A perfect day in Tuscany

Buona sera Piero, I just wanted to thank you for a “perfect” day in Tuscany. The whole family enjoyed the biking and wine tasting immensely! The choices of villages, roads, wineries and the fantastic restaurant in Monterrigioni could not have been better. You and your staff, Elena and Simone made everyone feel at ease which enhanced the experience even more…

Best day of our holiday, the only way to see Florence!

We were 2 families (4adults and 5 kids). Piero and Elena (our guides) were perfect! They prepared everything perfectly in advance, created a custom route for family with kids – adjusted the trip based on all of our ability, and overall created a perfect day. We were able to see all of the major sites of Florence without the feeling of fighting crowds, waiting in line…..

'Gotta keep your head on a swivel': Family mourns, concerns grow after Covington bicyclist is killed in crash

firenze family tour

COVINGTON, Ky. — Dozens of balloons lifted into the evening sky Friday, released by grieving loved ones who had gathered near the spot where Jonathon Hussing spent his final moments the day before.

The 26-year-old's photo is now tied around a lamp post. More balloons surround it as a row of candles sit below the memorial.

"It just hurts," said David Ard, Hussing's childhood friend.

He spoke with WCPO just moments after consoling one of Hussing's family members who'd broken down in tears and struggled to stay on his feet.

Covington police say they were called to the intersection of Scott Boulevard and 12th Street just before 9 a.m. Thursday and found Hussing, who had been struck by a charter bus traveling from Iowa to Northern Kentucky. The bus was traveling on 12th Street through the intersection as Hussing was cycling north on Scott Boulevard.

Seriously injured, Hussing was taken to UC Medical Center. He later died at the hospital.

"It's just unbelievable to think that somebody at such a young age, who was so full of life and just wanted to make everyone around him so happy — to think that you know he was going to better himself and then something bizarre like this happened, I mean it's just tragic," Ard said.

Jonathon Hussing

Hussing's sister Char-lee Denay said, "To know Jon, was to love Jon."

"Jonathon was the life of the party. No matter the mood anyone was in, when Jon came around he was cheering everyone up. He had the brightest energy around. He loved helping everybody when we needed him. He was a loving and caring son, brother, uncle and a friend. Everyone could count on him no matter the circumstances," she said in a statement, wishing not to speak on camera. "He loved going fishing, hanging out with family members — doesn’t matter if it was just sitting on the porch. He loved play fighting with his nieces and nephews. He loved playing the game all day long. His smile and laughter would light up the whole room."

Scott and 12th, also known as MLK, are the main thoroughfares in Covington, and two of dozens of state routes. The former is one-way traffic flowing south, the latter is two-way traffic flowing east and west.

They create a busy intersection and spot where some pedestrians and bicyclists feel create a dangerous environment.

"You gotta keep your head on a swivel," said lifelong Covington resident Kevin Bentley.

If he's not riding the bus, he's pedaling on his bike, he said. Bentley's lived in the same home just one block from the intersection his whole life.

"(It doesn't make me feel unsafe particularly) because I know this. I know to really slow down here, keep my head — watch for traffic," he said. "It bottlenecks right there so things can happen real easily right here."

Bentley said he's had friends and family either get hit or have close calls in the area. He said when 12th Street was widened into five lanes, it created even more room for speeding cars and he wants the city to put safety measures in place.

WCPO reached out to Covington to see if Bentley's dream could become reality. A spokesperson said because the city does not own or maintain the roads, any possible changes or improvements are out of their hands.

But there are efforts to make the city as a whole more pedestrian and bike-friendly.

“As residents of Covington who frequently walk and bike in the city, officials here have a personal interest in the issue of pedestrian and bicyclist safety," the city said in a statement. "For over a year we’ve been working with our counterparts in Newport and with Tri-State Trails on a regional plan to figure out ways — where feasible and affordable — to make improvements in the urban core related to this issue. In fact, some of these improvements are already underway. As we await the results of the police investigation into yesterday’s horrifying accident, we are reminded of the importance of this effort.”

Covington commissioned Tri-State Trails to form a plan, a draft of which was finalized and presented to commissioners at the end of January. It lays out a map of where bike lanes and trails could be added.

The plan was discussed again at a March 19 meeting. A city spokesperson said it's still in the beginning phase, and nothing will be finalized until an agreement is reached with Newport.

Meanwhile, work is underway on Fourth Street to determine if the road can be reconfigured from three lanes to two lanes to make way for a dedicated bike lane and wider, more pedestrian-friendly sidewalks.

"We don't have horns on our bikes like cars do, so if you're not from here, everybody pay attention to what's going on. Slow down," said Bentley. "I could have been (Hussing). It's hard you know. 26 years old and you're gone. You know, it's too soon."

Madonna Talks Life on Tour With Her Kids: “Nothing Brings Me More Happiness”

Madonna and three children.

Madonna has been clear from the beginning that The Celebration Tour is no mere “greatest hits” circuit. It’s more like an artist’s MoMA retrospective blown up into an arena tour showcasing her singular contributions to the culture. It’s also the Queen of Pop’s most deeply personal tour yet, paying tribute to her influences, mentors, parents, and the friends and collaborators she’s lost. Nowhere is that personal touch more apparent than the inclusion of four of her children in the show. Across 78 performances so far, Madonna has worked double-duty as mom with son David and daughters Mercy, Stella, and Estere along for the ride—each one getting their own moment on stage. Mercy accompanies her mother on piano during “Bad Girl,” while David duets with his mom on “Mother and Father” (which, apparently, required the young musician to work up a bit of confidence to do). Twins Stella and Estere meanwhile, show off their dance skills during “Don’t Tell Me” and a segment dedicated to ballroom.

Ahead of her final arena dates in Mexico and a historic (potentially record-breaking) free show in Rio de Janeiro, Madonna sat down to answer questions over e-mail about life on the road with her children.

Madonna and children.

Madonna with guitar.

Madonna with David.

Rocco performed on stage during MDNA , and Lola worked in the wardrobe department on that same tour. Your children always seem to be involved in some capacity with your work. How does that feel as a mother?

I have always been blessed with children who are interested in music, dance, and art. Starting from the top with Lola , who was not only an incredible ballet dancer and and a rhythmic gymnast, switching to musical theater and contemporary dance. Now she is a unique singer and song writer in her own right. When I go on tour, nothing brings me more happiness to know, we are all working on the same show creating the magic together. It would be boring if they were just traveling from hotel to hotel, and occasionally coming to watch the show.  Of course, I am also their mother so sometimes we get on each other’s nerves. We are a family of artists but are also a family and that’s what happens.

Madonna, Mercy, and her piano teacher Ric’Key Pageot.

It seems like your children have been honing their talents for years. How important is it for you as a mother to make sure they take their art seriously?

Because The Celebration Tour is a retrospective of my life, I thought it made perfect sense to include all of my children still living with me in the show. As they all dance, and play musical instruments, and have been doing so for years.  David has played guitar since he was a child.  Mercy has played piano since she was eight and has been classically trained most of her life. Eventually, when I adopted the twins, they started to play piano and dance as well.  There is always an endless parade of music and dance teachers coming and going in our house. And then we add to that Djing as Estere showed a keen interest in learning. She started taking DJ lessons and took it very seriously.

Madonna with Mercy

Each of the children has their own moment in the show. Mercy James playing piano during “Bad Girl” was a highlight. Any back story on how that all came together?

I saw a strange poetic juxtaposition of hedonism, erotic exploration emerging into the light of Mercy, sitting stoically at her grand piano playing Chopin as she beckoned me towards her, making me think about the choices I have made in my life.  Singing “Bad Girl” was kind of a confession, not an apology, and I felt we had an unspoken understanding of what was happening.

Madonna and daugther.

Stella dancing during “Don’t Tell Me.”

Stella and Mercy.

Stella performs in “Don’t Tell Me,” which is a big number during the show. How was she with learning the choreography?

Stella, who I would say is my shyest child, comes alive on stage, and I love having her as my little cowgirl. But she happens to be an incredible fine artist, and I’m hoping that she follows in the footsteps of Rocco who after being a B-boy, skater, and graffiti artist has really come into his own as an incredible painter.

David during the show’s finale.

David singing a verse during “Mother and Father” was fantastic. Has he expressed any interest in following in your footsteps with a musical career? He had originally only played guitar at the beginning of the tour. Did it take some convincing to get him to sing?

“Mother and Father” is one of my favorite moments in the show because it gave me a chance to not only honor my mother and her memory but also to honor David’s mother and her memory. He has always wanted to sing and play guitar.  He loves being on stage. This is nothing new. I love that we both get to sing to our mothers. Much of the show is about motherhood, family, and the importance of that in my artistic life.

Estere

Estere showing off her moves.

Estere

Estere, backstage in a “Britney Spears” t-shirt.

How did Estere get so into ballroom? Does she have any vogue mentors (aside from you)?

While Estere was learning how to DJ she became interested in ballroom competitions and just by luck, one of my choreographer’s assistants, Ivy Mugler, has her own ballroom house called House of Mugler.  She started taking Estere aside during rehearsals in another room, and within a couple of weeks she was doing death drops and spins and surprising us with her ability.  So, of course we had to turn that section of the show into Estere’s Ball.

Because this tour is a celebration of your entire career, did you kids learn or realize anything new about you?

I think what my children learned the most in this year of rehearsing and performing is that if you want to follow your dreams, you have to work hard for them.  And if all of them choose something different later in life, they will never forget this year of blood, sweat, and tears.

Madonna's children.

David, Stella, Mercy and Estere.

Madonna's daughter studying.

Estere studying.

The tour just wrapped up its U.S. dates. With five shows in Mexico City coming up and the huge free concert in Rio, what’s going through your mind right now?

This show was created for an indoor arena. Transforming and adapting it to perform outdoors on the beach, with no roof in Rio is going to be quite an undertaking and full of surprises. God willing, we will pull it off, and it will be an experience they will never forget.

Screen Rant

7 the tortured poets department songs that must be added to taylor swift: the eras tour.

Certain songs on Taylor Swift's new double album, The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology, were made to be performed live on The Eras Tour.

  • Taylor Swift accompanied the release of her eleventh studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, with a surprise second installment containing 15 extra songs.
  • Assuming Taylor Swift incorporates the new album into The Eras Tour set list, some songs from The Tortured Poets Department are better suited to be performed live than others.
  • Songs like "But Daddy I Love Him" and "Who's Afraid Of Little Old Me?" would make for thrilling, captivating performances on The Eras Tour.

If Taylor Swift decides to incorporate her new double album, The Tortured Poets Department, into her shows on The Eras Tour , there are certain songs she must add to the set list. Two hours after Swift's highly anticipated eleventh studio album was released at midnight on April 19, 2024, the songstress dropped a surprise second instalment containing 15 brand-new songs. Combined with the 16 original tracks, there are 31 songs on The Tortured Poets Department : The Anthology double album.

Now that she's embarked on this new musical era, The Tortured Poets Department will have to be incorporated into the live show somehow when Swift goes back on The Eras Tour on May 9, 2024. It's unlikely that she will add a whole extra set considering The Eras Tour concert is already three-and-a-half hours long , but she may adjust the existing set list to make room for TTPD. At the very least, Swift is guaranteed to perform some selections from TTPD as surprise songs during her acoustic sets on tour.

If Swift does incorporate The Tortured Poets Department into the permanent set list, though, the Folklore and Midnights sets are the most at risk of receiving cuts since they're tied for the longest eras with seven songs each. As the maximum for any set on The Eras Tour right now, seven is the most songs Swift can reasonably be expected to add from TTPD to the set list. For her selections, these seven songs from The Tortured Poets Department would translate best to a live performance on The Eras Tour.

The Eras Tour Movie Creates 1 Huge Challenge For Taylor Swift's Next Era

7 but daddy i love him, written by taylor swift & aaron dessner.

On "But Daddy I Love Him," Swift seems to be responding to the general public's unsolicited disapproval of her dating certain men using the trope of a stubborn teenager rebelling against her disapproving parents. The song gives off Fearless vibes, particularly the Romeo & Juliet -centered "Love Story" due to their shared forbidden love narrative, and resembles "august" from Folklore in terms of the production, both of which make for great performances on The Eras Tour.

Many fans have speculated that this song might be about Swift's short-lived public relationship with The 1975 frontman, Matty Healey, in the spring of 2023.

Of every song on The Tortured Poets Department, "But Daddy I Love Him" feels the most fit to be performed live . While listening to the theatrical track, it's easy to visualize what a live performance would look and sound like. The lively, melodramatic chorus and post-chorus were made to be sung in a stadium in front of thousands and the end of the bridge conjures images of Swift frolicking around onstage à la "august" if the instrumental was extended.

Since she borrowed the title from Ariel in The Little Mermaid, a version of which Allie quotes in The Notebook, Swift could include an intro of these characters reciting the titular line before performing "But Daddy I Love Him."

This song also presents so many opportunities for Swift to create a memorable concert experience. Since she borrowed the title from Ariel in The Little Mermaid , a version of which Allie quotes in The Notebook , Swift could include an intro of these characters reciting the titular line before performing "But Daddy I Love Him" or even reference them in her costume. Swift teasing the audience with " you should see your faces " after the fake out about " having his baby " is also poised to become an instantly iconic moment if she performed this song on The Eras Tour.

10 Taylor Swift Songs I Really Wish Were In The Eras Tour Movie

6 florida (featuring florence + the machine), written by taylor swift & florence welch.

Of the two tracks with featured artists on The Tortured Poets Department, "Florida!!!" featuring Florence + The Machine blows the album opener "Fortnight" featuring Post Malone out of the water. This ode to the Sunshine State is already an intoxicating song to listen to on the album, and it would be ten times more exhilarating to experience live on The Eras Tour.

Even if she doesn't add it to the set list, Swift is guaranteed to perform "Florida!!!" as a surprise song during the acoustic set at one of her Miami shows, though.

If Swift added "Florida!!!" to the set list, the crowd stomping their feet along with the heavy drums on the chorus before belting out the titular lyric in unison, exclamation points and all, would be an unforgettable moment every night on The Eras Tour. The line " f**k me up, Florida " that repeats on the bridge and serves as the final lyric of the song would also feel liberating to shout out loud in a crowd setting, especially for the attendees at Swift's three stops in Miami, Florida, between October 18 to 20, 2024.

Sadly, Swift is unlikely to add "Florida!!!" to the permanent set list since Florence + The Machine will not be joining her on The Eras Tour. She could still perform the song solo and sing Florence's parts herself, but this is a long shot since there are no songs on the set list that originally have featured artists. Even if she doesn't add it to the set list, Swift is guaranteed to perform "Florida!!!" as a surprise song during the acoustic set at one of her Miami shows, though.

Swift has brought out opening acts like Phoebe Bridgers and HAIM to perform their duets with her ("Nothing New" and "no body, no crime," respectively) during the main show on The Eras Tour, but these were not permanently added to the set list.

Taylor Swift's Next Album Sets Up A New Eras Tour Movie Cameo That Would Make Up For Cutting HAIM

5 who's afraid of little old me, written by taylor swift.

While most of the songs on The Tortured Poets Department most fit for a live performance are more on the upbeat and lighthearted side, "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" is the polar opposite. On this haunting track, Swift ruminates on her experience in the spotlight and the treatment she's received as a public figure, calling out the hypocrisy of those who villainize her.

The whole song would make for a chilling, powerful live performance, but hearing Swift scream the titular lyric on the chorus of "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" would be on another level.

"Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" is delivered with the same exasperated rage underneath a devilish grin as most of the songs from Swift's Reputation era , especially the pre-chorus, " If you wanted me dead, you should've just said/Nothing makes me feel more alive ." The whole song would make for a chilling, powerful live performance, but hearing Swift scream the titular lyric on the chorus of "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" would be on another level.

The song is both sonically and thematically similar to "mad woman" from Folklore, as well. Though Swift does not perform "mad woman" on The Eras Tour, a good basis for comparison for how "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" would feel live is Swift's harrowing performance of "my tears ricochet" from the Folklore set, which the TTPD track also resembles. All of these songs that bear similar themes, subject matter, and overall vibe as " Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" show how the TTPD track would translate perfectly to a live performance.

4 Imgonnagetyouback

Written by taylor swift & jack antonoff.

On "imgonnagetyouback" from the second installment of The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology, Swift schemes to get her ex back, though she's uncertain of her intentions for doing so. "Imgonnagetyouback" isn't necessarily a stand-out track on the album, but the playful song lends itself well to a live performance that's fun and entertaining for Swift and the audience alike. If executed properly, the lyrics on the bridge, " even if it's handcuffed, I'm leavin' here with you " and " pick your poison, babe, I'm poison either way, " and the lead into the final chorus could all be huge moments during the live performance.

By amping up the production and accompanying the song with some fun choreography, "imgonnagetyouback" has the potential to deliver a performance in line with the 1989 era. In fact, the line on the chorus about smashing up the subject's bike is reminiscent of Swift smashing her boyfriend's fancy car in the "Blank Space" music video, which she referenced via Easter egg on the Eras Tour by wielding a neon golf club during her performance.

9 Taylor Swift Songs That Are Even Better In The Eras Tour Movie Than On The Album

3 so high school.

On the joyous and nostalgic "So High School," Swift gushes about how her adult relationship makes her feel like a lovestruck teenager in the best way. She references teen-centric media like American Pie and Grand Theft Auto and games like "Kiss, Marry, Kill," Spin the Bottle, and Truth or Dare. These details and the premise of the song as a whole provide endless possibilities for different high school-themed costumes, props, set pieces, and even choreography in a live performance of "So High School" on The Eras Tour.

It's also widely speculated that "So High School" is about Swift's relationship with her current boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce, mostly because of the lyric, " you know how to ball, I know Aristotle ." She already shouts him out on The Eras Tour by changing the lyric on "Karma" from " guy on the screen " to " guy on the Chiefs, " but it would be a sweet gesture to include a song that's (supposedly) about Kelce on the set list, especially for the shows where he's in attendance.

Is Travis Kelce In Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Movie?

2 thank you aimee.

On "thanK you aIMee," Swift reflects on how she was ruthlessly tormented by the titular Aimee and realizes that the hell Aimee put her through pushed her to prove herself and succeed. The song is seemingly directed at a mean girl who bullied Swift in school but the deliberately capitalized letters in the title suggest that "thanK you aIMee" is actually a subtle jab at Kim Kardashian and their famous feud. Given this additional context, it might be controversial to include this song on The Eras Tour set list.

Hearing Swift call out bullies and sing about finding her strength would be such a significant experience for all the young children attending The Eras Tour who might be going through the same thing.

As a standalone song separate from any (unconfirmed) lore, "thanK you aIMee" is an empowering anthem about perseverance and overcoming bullying. Hearing Swift call out bullies and sing about finding her strength would be such a significant experience for all the young children attending The Eras Tour who might be going through the same thing.

The production on "thanK you aIMee" is quite understated on the album, but the instrumentals can be bulked up to create more of an atmosphere during the live performance. Given the deeply personal subject matter (whether it's about Kardashian or a real childhood bully, or both), performing "thanK you aIMee" onstage every night would probably be a cathartic experience for Swift , especially the lyric, "I built a legacy that you can't undo ."

1 The Bolter

A bit of a deep cut on The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology, "The Bolter" tells the tale of a woman who bolts (hence the title) at the first sign of trouble in a relationship. The third-person, unraveling narrative is reminiscent of the detached, fictionalized approach Swift took on Folklore , which has proved fruitful in delivering compelling performances on The Eras Tour.

The vast melodic diversity of "The Bolter" also creates sonic distinctions between the verses, chorus, post-chorus, and bridge, which would naturally translate to an engaging live performance.

Though it comes toward the end of the lengthy double album, "The Bolter" stands out due to Swift's vivid storytelling and the varying pitches she sings in throughout the song. The vast melodic diversity of "The Bolter" also creates sonic distinctions between the verses, chorus, post-chorus, and bridge, which would naturally translate to an engaging live performance. Performing "The Bolter" would also provide Taylor Swift with the opportunity to whip out her acoustic guitar during The Tortured Poets Department set on The Eras Tour.

Israel’s Military Campaign Has Left Gaza’s Medical System Near Collapse

The Israeli military’s bombardment and invasion of Gaza have decimated its health care system in a way that aid groups and international bodies are increasingly calling “systematic.”

A man lying down with a bandaged head, one seated with a cast on his arm and blood on his torso and a third lying with his hand over his face as a fourth man stands.

By Vivian Nereim and Abu Bakr Bashir

Vivian Nereim reported from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Abu Bakr Bashir reported from London.

Before Israel’s invasion of Gaza last year, Dr. Mahmoud Al-Reqeb worked in one of the Palestinian territory’s largest hospitals and had a private clinic, caring for women throughout their pregnancies.

Now, he lives in a plastic tent in Rafah, a Palestinian border town where roughly half of Gaza’s population has sought refuge , and treats patients for no charge in another tent. Living under Israeli bombardment, with shortages of food and clean water, the pregnant women he serves struggle to find basic safety and nourishment , let alone prenatal care.

Since the Israeli military began bombarding Gaza six months ago following the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attack, its forces have wrecked entire hospitals , struck ambulances and killed or detained hundreds of health care workers. Israeli restrictions on goods entering Gaza have prevented lifesaving medical supplies from reaching patients, according to aid groups . And shortages of fuel, water and food have made it difficult for medical workers to provide basic services.

The result has been the near collapse of a health care system that once served Gaza’s population of more than two million. By late March, of the 36 large-scale hospitals across Gaza, only 10 were “minimally functional,” according to the World Health Organization.

Israeli officials say that medical centers have been targets because Hamas fighters embed themselves within and under the facilities, and that it is the only way to root out the armed group. Hamas and medical workers have denied this accusation. Aid groups , researchers and international bodies have increasingly been calling Israel’s dismantling of Gaza’s medical capacity “systematic.”

“If you engineered the destruction of a health care system, you would end up exactly where we are today,” said Ciarán Donnelly, a senior vice president at the International Rescue Committee, an aid group that has been operating in Gaza.

Mr. Donnelly said he had worked in the humanitarian aid sector for two decades and could not think of any other war in which a medical system had been so thoroughly crushed so quickly.

Asked for comment, the Israeli military referred to previous statements it has made about Hamas fighters’ embedding themselves in facilities. Evidence examined by The New York Times suggests Hamas has used Al Shifa Hospital — which the Israeli military has raided — for cover, stored weapons inside it and maintained a lengthy tunnel. The Israeli military has not presented similarly expansive evidence about most of the other health care centers it has attacked.

Dr. Al-Reqeb’s old facility, Nasser Hospital, was raided by Israeli troops in February. When he goes to his new job, at an Emirati-funded hospital — one of the few facilities in Gaza providing specialized gynecological and obstetric services — he is one of fewer than 10 doctors treating 500 patients a day with a “severe lack of supplies, staff, medicine and equipment,” he said.

“I was very shocked when I realized the level of damage the medical system is suffering,” Dr. Al-Reqeb, 33, said in a telephone interview. “It is completely destroyed.”

In November , Human Rights Watch called for Israeli attacks on medical facilities and personnel to be investigated as war crimes. Doctors interviewed by The Times said at the time that they were performing surgeries without anesthesia and confronting filthy wounds infested with maggots because of a lack of fresh water and iodine. A W.H.O. database has recorded more than 800 “attacks on health care” in Gaza and the West Bank.

The devastation of the medical system has rippled throughout Gaza. Cancer patients have had to halt chemotherapy. People with kidney failure have lost access to lifesaving dialysis. Pregnant women have gone without the monitoring that could help identify life-threatening conditions like pre-eclampsia.

“Sometimes I cry,” said Dr. Zaki Zakzook, an oncologist who was once one of Gaza’s pre-eminent cancer doctors and now lives in a tent with his family in Khan Younis. “I’m watching my patients being executed, slowly and gradually.”

Dr. Zakzook has been able to do little for his patients since the war forced the closing of the cancer hospital where he worked, he said. He now sees patients at a hospital in the south but no longer gives them chemotherapy, fearing that doing so would weaken their immune systems at a time when the medical system is unable to cope with infection, he said. Instead, he offers palliative care, like painkillers.

“I’m trying to do my best, others are trying the same, but what can we do?” he said.

In February, Israeli forces stormed Nasser Hospital , a large facility in Khan Younis. They shelled the hospital’s orthopedic department and detained dozens of health care workers, according to Doctors Without Borders, an aid group whose staff members witnessed the attack .

“The evidence at our disposal points to deliberate and repeated attacks by Israeli forces against Nasser Hospital, its patients and its medical staff,” the organization wrote. The Israeli military said it had been searching for Hamas fighters and the bodies of Israelis taken captive during the Oct. 7 attack.

In March, the Israeli military raided Al Shifa Hospital for a second time , killing nearly 200 people it called terrorists. Israeli troops left widespread devastation in their wake after extended gun battles with Palestinian militants in and around the complex. It said its troops had come under fire from gunmen inside and around one of the hospital’s buildings. The Gazan authorities said that 200 civilians had died in the raid. Neither statement could be independently verified.

After the raid, the hospital premises were littered with bodies and shallow graves, according to the World Health Organization, which led a team this month to evaluate the hospital’s condition.

In a statement after its visit, the W.H.O. said the hospital was “an empty shell,” with no patients and most of its equipment “unusable or reduced to ashes.”

“There’s increasing evidence that a red cross or red crescent actually puts a target on you, rather than the other way around, and it is just an appalling degradation of human values,” said Dr. Tim Goodacre, a surgeon who has been traveling to Gaza for years to help train Palestinian doctors and volunteered at a hospital there in January.

Before the war, Abdulaziz Saeed’s 63-year-old father was expecting to receive a kidney transplant in March. Mr. Saeed and his mother had both been approved as potential donors. Then the war began. The doctor who was to perform the operation was killed, Mr. Saeed said, and “all our plans have been canceled.”

His family now shares its home with dozens of displaced people in the city of Deir al Balah, and his father, who previously needed three dialysis sessions a week for renal failure, is able to receive only one a week at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital.

“The biggest issue is the lack of medical staff,” Mr. Saeed said. “There used to be three specialized doctors in the kidney department. Two of them were killed, and the third is unreachable.”

Anas Saad, a 24-year-old nurse at the hospital, said many of his colleagues had quit after the repeated attacks on medical facilities.

“This is no longer a safe place,” Mr. Saad said. “I am doing my best to help people survive. However, it is becoming extremely risky, as hospitals can be stormed or bombed anytime.”

Dr. Tanya Haj Hassan, an American pediatric intensive-care doctor, recently entered Gaza as part of a team of foreign doctors to volunteer at the hospital. She described “apocalyptic” scenes, including a girl who, she said, died after an Israeli bulldozer ran over a tent, crushing her, and a boy in a wheelchair whose entire family had been killed but who believed that his parents were coming to get him because “nobody has the heart to tell him.” Her account could not be independently verified.

The entirety of Gaza “just feels like it was hit by a nuclear bomb,” she said. “The reality is, they’ve taken out hospital at a time. ‘Hospital at a time’ — I can’t believe I’m even saying those words.”

Hwaida Saad contributed reporting from Beirut, Lebanon, and Johnatan Reiss from Tel Aviv.
