The Fly Fishing Film Tour: Coming to a Location Near You
No matter where you live or what kind of fly fishing you’re into, you can be sure that there’s something for you, at a convenient location, with the Fly Fishing Film Tour. Come experience the most exhilarating and powerful fly fishing films of the year with us.
About The Tour
The Fly Fishing Film Tour, or F3T, is an annual traveling film tour that showcases the best fly fishing films of the year from all around the world. The tour features films on fly fishing spanning all methods and locations, from anglers bow-and-arrow casting 3-weights to hungry native brook trout in tiny mountain streams to fishermen throwing long, looping casts at torpedo-tarpon in turquoise salt flats. Not only that, but with each fish landed comes a story; the festival works hard each year to showcase the most inspiring and important stories that filmmakers have to share. The 2022 F3T Festival featured such stories as a group of anglers dropped in one of the deepest true-wilderness locations left on the globe, the Swedish Laplands, to explore and fish the north country, to an exploration of the secrets of Casa Mar through tarpon fishing. Also included was the feel-good tale of a man named Dan, who is not very good at catching fish, journeying to the jungles of Columbia in search of finally getting a take on his flies, alongside a longtime Vail, CO, fishing guide’s journey to share the love of fly fishing and nature with her daughter. Fly fishing is so much more than just fishing: it is a metaphor for life. Each film that is selected for the F3T explores the art of fly fishing through not just a literal camera lens, but a human one too, all in search of understanding and portraying the connection with each other and the connections with nature that fishing offers each one of us. There is variety, action, beauty and, of course, fishing in each lineup of the Fly Fishing Film Tour. Secure your 2024 tickets to make sure that you catch this year’s action!
In 2022, the Fly Fishing Film Tour traveled to almost every state in America, including a showing in Anchorage, AK. No matter where you are in the United States, there is an opportunity for you to catch fish on a fly rod. That’s why the F3T showcases films from all over the country and the world, and brings them to your city. From Portland, Maine, to Portland, Oregon, there’s a good chance that the festival will come to a location near you in 2024. And if not, digital tickets will also be available for purchase so you can watch from anywhere your adventures take you. Join us on our journey to showcase the very best in fly fishing films during the 2024 season; check back soon for this coming year’s lineup and locations. We can’t wait to share our stories with you!

Fly Fishing Film Tour hopes to catch a Park City audience

2019 Fly Fishing Film Tour 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 7 Jupiter Bowl, 1090 Center Drive $15 in advance at Trout Bum 2 in Park City and Fish Head Fly Shop in Heber utahstreamaccess.org and flyfilmtour.com
The 2019 Fly Fishing Film Tour will cast its line on Thursday, March 7, at Jupiter Bowl.
The event, presented by the Utah Stream Access Coalition, will screen eight short films that spotlight the people, places and fisheries that promote and support the love of fly fishing, said Jarrod Kear, who is on the board of directors of the Utah Stream Access Coalition (USAC), a 7,000-member nonprofit that helps secure access to Utah’s public streams and waterbeds.
This year’s films are set in global fishing hot spots from Alaska to Florida, South Dakota to French Polynesia and British Columbia to the coast of Australia, Kear said.
“As the new films come out each year, we partner with the tour to bring these movies, which are a lot of fun, to Utah,” he said. “Many people like to see what’s going on as far as fishing films go. These are all films made by excellent filmmakers.”

The tour also draws audiences who want to support USAC.
“The fly fishing community has embraced the message of the Fly Fishing Film Tour, which is to promote our message of open stream access across the country,” Kear said. “In particular, the fly fishing community has embraced the (work) to achieve opening more public access to our rivers and streams.”
Sean Leonard, president of Utah Stream Access Coalition, said the organization started in 2010, and works to establish legislation that would protect property owners’ rights, but also give access to those who enjoy recreational hobbies that involve water.
“Those hobbies include everything from fly fishing, boating, bird watching and whitewater activities (such as rafting),” Leonard said.
One recent USAC victory was a Weber River case, in which the nonprofit challenged the legality of making streambeds on certain rivers in Utah private property, thus restricting navigation on the river, according to Kear.
USAC was instrumental in the Utah Supreme Court’s ruling that reopened up 40 miles of the Upper Weber River that passed through private property.
“That pretty much includes the confluent of the main stem of the Weber up in Holiday Park and includes areas running down through Weber Canyon to Echo Reservoir including Oakley, Peoa, Browns Canyon and down past Rockport into Wanship and Coalville,” Kear said. “Much of this area was under private property and required permission from landowners to get access.”
The Fly Fishing Film Tour will not only screen the films, Leonard said. It will also involve discussions about stream access and include opportunity drawings.
“We’ve had some great donations that include Traeger Grills, fly fishing trips lead by Trout Hunter Guide Services, and various fishing gear,” he said. “The support from local retailers has been awesome.”
Kear got into fly fishing after spending many of his summers whitewater rafting in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
“Rather than rowing the boat through rapids, I saw some pretty things that I felt I was missing, and I thought a fishing rod would help extend rowing through the canyons,” he said. “I embraced fly fishing more in the past 12 years, and I’ve been with USAC since 2010, working on both fronts — whitewater and fly fishing.”
Leonard, who great up in Michigan, found his way to the tackle box after moving to Utah for college in 2003.
“Fly fishing was something that I had always thought about, but didn’t get into it, until I came here,” he said. “I’m attracted to the art of fly fishing, because you learn something new every time you’re out there enjoying the scenery and tranquility.”
2019 Fly Fishing Film Tour films
“Movements” by Colin Scott | Wilder Studios Production
Three Alaska fishing guides finish their 100-plus day guiding season and road trip back to their home waters on the East Coast In Van-a-White — their minivan, which is a true fish-bum rig if there ever was one. Along the way they find Alaskan trout, BC steelhead, Wisconsin musky and New York stripers.
“Glorious Bastards” by Capt. Jack Productions
Jako Lucas, Christiaan Pretorious and a crew of expedition anglers explore the outer reaches of the Australian coast and find some of the best salt-water fishing in the South Pacific. Species: blue bastards, Indo-Pacific permit, shark, trevally and more.
“NexGen” by Beattie Productions | Off the Grid Studios
R.A. Beattie follows two members of fly fishing’s next generation to the trout factory that is the South Fork of the Snake River in Idaho and captures this famed fishery in all its glory. As the crew revel in dry fly madness and manic streamer chases, it’s evident that the kids are all right … and they’re fishy as hell.
“Hank Patterson — Around the World Globe” by Trout Jouster Studios
Hank Patterson has had some great pieces in the Fly Fishing Film Tour so we decided to reward his hard work and dedication with the chance to film in an exotic and rarely seen destination … South Dakota. In this exploratory epic, Hank delves deep into the Black Hills, mining for reclusive trout and even more reclusive locals.
“Alignment” by Eric Jackson | Vantage Cinema
Eric Jackson made a name for himself as a professional snowboarder, but when he is not strapped into a board his obsession turns to fly fishing, specifically steelhead on the fly. In this exclusive cut for the Fly Fishing Film Tour, Jackson and his cohorts trade pillow lines and big mountain spines for running lines and intruder flies … and swing up some monster fish in the process.
“The Return” by KGB Productions
This beautifully shot piece will take you on a spellbinding venture into Yellowstone’s famed Thorofare alongside some of the folks who have worked to save the native fish that make their home in this remote area of the park. What they find is a storied fishery on the rebound … and some truly massive cutthroat.
“Where it All Started” by Liam Gallagher
Karlie Roland grew up fishing the Henry’s Fork. It’s where she became addicted to fly fishing and it’s now where she gets to share her obsession with others. After pursuing guide gigs across the West, Roland has made her way back to the Fork and the water where it all started.
“Koi Koi” by Indifly | Costa Films
In the northwest corner of the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia lies the tiny Anaa Atoll. The people who make their home on this long dormant rim of an underwater volcano are working to build an economy around the atoll’s world-class flats fishing. The result is a fish population that is now seen by the locals as something that should be protected and promoted to destination anglers rather than netted, exploited and shipped off to foreign market.

Annual Fly Fishing Film Tour goes digital March 10
Tickets for the tour go on sale today
The 15th annual Fly Fishing Film Tour launches in a digital platform on March 10, and, as always, Trout Unlimited will play a big role in the online event.
The 2021 Fly Fishing Film Tour will be available to watch through Sunday April 4. The streaming event will include everything audiences have come to expect from an F3T event, including unforgettable storytelling, camaraderie and premium free giveaways, including free trips.
In addition, this year’s event offers a few ways attendees can enjoy a great lineup of films while also giving back to TU and maybe getting in on some TU-specific giveaways. To buy a ticket and send a $2 kickback to your local TU chapter, click here , find your chapter, and buy your F3T ticket through your chapter-specific link.
Additionally, the F3T is working with TU’s 5 River college program. Through our Snag the Swag sweepstakes , participants can get in on a drawing for some great gear from the likes of Thomas & Thomas, Simms, Yeti, Abel, Oskar Blues, Costa and Scientific Anglers.
The film tour’s organizers call this year’s lineup “arguably the most well-rounded collection of films we’ve ever showcased.”
As usual, the collection of films comes from around the world, ranging from a feature on a Russian Oligarch who burns down poaching camps in order to clean up a remote river in the Russian far east to a deeply personal ride in Wyoming as an angler navigates the Flaming Gorge after a diagnosis of life altering disease. Another film focuses in on smallmouth bass in the Upper Midwest, and another reflects on Martin Luther King Jr.’s lasting social impact and his passion for flats fishing in the Bahamas.
Tickets for the 2021 streaming F3T event will go on sale today, Feb. 17 . Purchasers will have the option to buy individual tickets or family passes online or at partnered fly shops, where there will be a $5 discount to support Trout Unlimited conservation initiatives. Ticket buyers will also be given the opportunity to upgrade their purchase to an Active Pass membership, an all-access annual membership that delivers exclusive content, training plans, and entry to events across Pocket Outdoor Media titles, including Warren Miller Entertainment, Backpacker Magazine, the Fly Fishing Film Tour, SKI Magazine and more.
F3T organizers are also working with affiliate partners and hoping to have in-person events at drive-ins and outdoor venues around the country from mid-May to mid-June, pending public safety during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Here’s this year’s film lineup:
Hardlined , A KGB production , directed by Chris Kitchen and produced by KGB Productions and Rex Messing.
Every year, a migration of epic proportions takes place along the Eastern Seaboard of America. From the Carolinas to Canada, anglers flock to the rocky coastlines, estuaries, rivers and inshore waters to target one of America’s most iconic gamefish, the striped bass. Despite its popularity and significance to the coastal communities in the Northeast, the fishery is once again in major jeopardy. The last time this happened, we witnessed one of the greatest conservation success stories of all time, restoring the stock to astronomical numbers. Today, the question on everyone’s mind is can we do it again?
Leap Year , a Topo Films production , directed by Jordie Lepage and Chase White. Produced by Patrick Henry and Chase White. Edited by Jordie Lepage
On the surface, spey fishing for steelhead is a sporting pursuit steeped in tradition. Every year, these anglers and the wild fish they pursue both migrate to the same rivers at the same time. Now, from issues like global pandemics to global warming, there are countless ways in which this tradition can be broken. In swinging flies for wild steelhead in British Columbia’s famed Bulkley-Skeena Valley, Leap Year explores the river and the colorful characters of this culture as it begs the question: who will carry on these traditions if the migrations come screeching to a halt?
Escape , a Green River Fly Fisher production . Directed and Produced by Ryan Kelly and Gilbert Trowley
Life isn’t about what happens to us, it’s how we react. Follow avid angler Ryan Kelly as he documents the management of a disease that requires him to move constantly to cope with the pain. Living in the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, he logs over 1,500 miles on the “heal-toe express” and another 1,000-plus on the sticks. Through the process he finds the most extraordinary Escape .
Rewa Rodeo , a Creative Passion Project productio n. Directed and Produced by Johann Du Preez.
This is the story of a small village in the heart of Guyana that conserves fish and wildlife of the Rewa River. Not only did their efforts bring a fish back from the brink of extinction but it created the finest arapaima fishery on the planet.
Mighty Waters , a Cold Collaborative production . Directed by Shannon Vandivier.
In Bimini, an island in the Bahamas, Martin Luther King, Jr. found a friend in Ansil Saunders. Ansil is a bonefish guide and community leader who speaks of MLK as a friend as genuine to your face as he was to millions on a stage. Dr. King enjoyed the solitude of Bimini to write and think. Four days before his assassination, they sat in Ansil’s boat, sharing psalms while Dr. King worked on his final speech, “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop.” King had a great influence on Ansil and the community of Bimini, inspiring freedom in the Bahamas from colonial rule and for equality.
Spot B , a Meateater production . Directed and Produced by RA Beattie.
We were torn about this one. Is it acceptable to tell the world about an uncrowded river with big smallmouth that slurp topwater flies if a mine threatens to ruin the whole thing? We’re all sick of spot-burning, but we’re more sick of sulfide mines threatening iconic fisheries. This is a soul-cleansing spot burn.
Tetiaroa , an Aussie Fly Fisher production . Directed and produced by Kane Chenoweth and Josh Hutchins.
Tetiaroa is a special place. Nestled among the Society Islands of French Polynesia, it offers a promised land of giant bonefish, GTs and trigger fish. Forty miles from Tahiti, owned by the Brando estate, Tetiaroa is an untapped yet vulnerable beauty, deserving of protection. Join Joshua Hutchins of Aussie Fly Fisher and the team from Fly Oddssey as they explore the endless flats and unbelievable fishing. Double figure bonefish and cruisy island vibes make this a once-in-a-lifetime trip.
Dropped In The Pacific , a Jessica Haydahl Photography production . Directed and Produced by Jessica Haydahl.
Seven women are on an adventure of a lifetime; dropped in the Pacific to fish the famous Christmas Island coral atoll. The women experience the remote nature and unforgiving weather that Christmas Island can be known for. Together as a group, they share their experiences, the difficulties and joys they encountered, as well as what the sport of fly fishing brings to their lives.
River Tiger , a Yonder Content production . Directed by Andy Maser and Adam Bagger. Produced by Guido Rahr and Oakley Brooks.
An unlikely trio is lured to a remote river in the wilderness of the Russian Far East in search of a mythical 55-kilogram (120-pound) trout. The adventurers — a billionaire Russian businessman, an American fly fisherman, and a Russian scientist — must join forces to unlock the river’s secrets in order to save it.
Denny’s Fly Box
A PMD production . Directed and produced by Matt Devlin.
This is the story of unknown legend Denny Waln. Waln is a master fly tier and angler. He’s one of a kind. Cut from the cloth of a bygone era, his humble, no-nonsense nature leaves an indelible imprint on those he crosses paths with. Join us as we peek inside Denny’s fly box. From filmmaker Matt Devlin of PMD productions in Missoula, Mont. Featuring Denny Waln and Erin Noordermeer.
Just Like Mac
A Dorsal Outdoors production . Directed and produced by Ben Meadows.
Uncle Mac left a deep imprint on Tommy. Join us as we retrace Tommy’s steps —from farm ponds to tarpon flats — to understand why.
A Journey Upstream
A Motion Digital production . Directed by The Braker Brothers.
“A Journey Upstream” is the tale of two seemingly unrelated fish species that helps us understand the connectivity within our environment and the importance of a healthy Chesapeake Bay watershed.

The 2021 Fly Fishing Film Tour kicks off
by Hatch Magazine - Sunday, Feb 21st, 2021
The 2021 Fly Fishing Film Tour (F3T) kicked off this week with the release of its compilation "stoke reel," online ticket sales, and more. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the iconic, nationwide fly fishing film festival. F3T 2021 will be screening its slate of a 12 feature films and 7 shorts virtually, beginning on March 10 and ending on April 4.
The 2021 tour features films from a surprisingly diverse array of destinations and fisheries. As is the norm, films from far away, remote and exotic venues help fuel the lineup. The stories told by this year's films circle the globe, exploring destinations such as French Polynesia, Eastern Russia, the Guyana rainforest, the flats of French Polynesia, British Columbia, and the Bahamas.
But this year's tour includes remarkably comprehensive coverage of domestic locales as well, with virtually every major target species in the United States represented in this year's ranks. Destinations include Utah’s Flaming Gorge, the trout waters of Wisconsin, the striped bass waters of the eastern seaboard, Montana, Florida's tarpon flats, Chesapeake Bay, and more.
The highlight of this year's tour may be the film Mighty Waters , which details the relationship between renowned Bahamas bonefish guide Ansil Saunders and civil and human rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The film offers a poignant exploration of the somewhat unexpected friendship between the pair and provides a small window on King's final days. King was aboard Saunder's boat, where he penned his famous and final speech, his "I've Been to the Mountaintop" address, just four days before his assassination in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4.
Individual tickets for F3T 2021 start at $20, with upgraded access plans available that offer a bevy of bonus content and add-ons — including the full 47-flick Warren Miller film library dating back to 1961, magazine subscriptions, travel discounts, and other perks.

On the Fly: Fly Fishing Film Tour premiere in Aspen
News News | Apr 5, 2024
The beautiful, mystical, spiritual rites of fly fishing are difficult to explain, but we know it when we see it. Now, the opportunity to see that beauty shimmering across a 30-foot movie screen when The Fly Fishing Film Tour (F3T) arrives in Aspen. All anglers, casters, boaters, and friends are invited to gather for a celebration of the pursuits, the filmmakers, the waters, and the fish that dwell within. Brought to you locally by Slifer Smith & Frampton, FirstBank, and Taylor Creek Fly Shop.
Fourteen breathtaking films — highlighting a diverse cast of characters — make up the F3T.
“A Line in the Sand” is the chronicle of Bahamian anglers and activists who seek to stop development of a 5,000-acre limestone mine threatening the future of a pristine bonefish habitat.
“Bitter Water” tells the story of Baja California Sur’s Lucero family, multi-generational anglers who embrace the fly fishing industry as a means of protecting their home, their environment, and their family’s livelihood.
These are just a few of the films brought to Aspen by F3T. It’s your chance to catch up with all of your fishing friends and hopefully make some new ones!

Per WU, "This swap-meet and sale is for new and used fishing and boating equipment and related items only. No guns, ammo, hunting, or shooting items permitted."
- The Fly Fishing Film Tour visits the Gorton Center in Lake Forest on Sunday. There are showings at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. It includes films as varied as "Rio De Gigantes" (peacock bass on the fly in the Amazon) to "Marlin Fly Project-F3T Edit," (community and conservation in southwestern Baja, Mexico).
