If at all possible, you want to organise your holiday in Thailand so that you're spending October in the Central, North and Northeast regions. October on the islands — any of them — is wet. The weather in Northern Thailand in October though, is lovely. Less rain, cooler temperatures and not too crowded — what more could you want.

Read reviews for Baan Koh Mak

We suggest heading straight for Northern destinations like Chiang Mai , Pai , Phrae and Mae Salong , where the forests are still lush and active but not nearly as wet as in September or August. This is also a good time to strike out to Northeastern destinations, perhaps to a tranquil Mekong River town like Chiang Khan or Khong Chiam . In 2011, floods inundated huge swathes of the Chao Phraya basin in Central Thailand in late October, including large slices of Bangkok, Ayutthaya and Ratchaburi . Residents of these areas face the possibility of floods every year.

October is not a great time for island hopping anywhere in Thailand. The eastern monsoon has begun in lower Gulf islands like Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Samui , while in the west, Andaman Sea islands are still quite wet. The Andaman side is however reaching the end of its rainy season, so you might get lucky and score a sunny patch on Ko Lanta , Ko Phi Phi , Phuket or Ko Lipe , among many others. Island-hopping ferries still aren’t running, though, and national park islands like The Similans and Ko Tarutao do not reopen until November.

Bye bye rain! You'll still get some rain in October in Bangkok and Central Thailand but the wet season is in full scale retreat by this stage. If the wet season was a very wet one, there may still be flooding in Bangkok and elsewhere if the Chao Phraya River swells over its banks, but that doesn't happen every year.

October on Ko Chang sees the rainfall halve again while the temperatures level of at low 20s to low 30s where they'll stay for the rest of the year. You'll still be seeing some rain on Ko Chang in October, but it's much more tolerable than the previous couple of months. November is even better.

Less rain and continuing moderate temperatures are what October brings to northern Thailand weather wise. Mae Hong Son and Pai are particularly pleasant this time of year — and not too crowded either.

The northeast is really starting to dry out come October — especially in the eastern regions, though the west will still be seeing a bit more rain. Temperatures will continue to fall, albeit slightly, from September.

October brings solid rain to most of Thailand's Gulf coast. Ko Tao in particular gets pretty average weather in October, but Ko Samui and Ko Pha Ngan also get a bit of a lashing. The mainland coast gets slightly less rain, but only marginally less. Stay in the north if you can.

As with the Gulf Coast, expect rain, rain and more rain. If you're lucky the wet will break halfway through the month, but if you're out of luck you can expect rain right to month end. On a positive note, it does rain less than in September.

Thailand news, tips & advice

Visiting Thailand in October

October in Thailand is what the travel industry describes as ‘shoulder-season’. Fewer tourists are around and good deals are usually available on flights and accommodation before the higher rates start to kick in during November. It’s also a month which sees the unofficial end of the rainy season marked by the Buddhist holiday of Awk Phansa . Various local festivals are held to commemorate Awk Phansa and wherever you are in Thailand there is a good chance there will be some event going on nearby.

October is an excellent month to explore the Thai countryside with the rice-fields in the north and north-east resplendent in green. The weather is a mix of sunshine and showers so carry a small umbrella with you. Cheap foldable umbrellas can be bought at markets in Thailand (or the ever-reliable 7-Eleven) for as little as 100 Baht. Look for ones with a UV protective coating which are more durable and also double-up as protection against the rain or the sun making them perfect for the variable October weather.

Thailand weather in October

October can widely be regarded as the last of the rainy season months for many areas of Thailand, but there are some regional variations. The weather in Thailand in October can be a mixed bag and isn’t easy to predict. Some years the rainy season extends longer than usual and some years it finishes early. The weather tends to be more settled on the mainland, particularly in the second half of October. Although there can be sporadic heavy rainfall during October, temperatures are warm and you should see plenty of blue sky and sunshine wherever you stay during your visit. Generally speaking, when the clouds roll in and the rain does come it tends to be in the form of short, sharp downpours rather than prolonged periods. October is a good month to explore Bangkok and nearby areas such as Ayutthaya and Kanchanaburi . It’s also a great time of the year to get out into the Thai countryside in the north and north-east and enjoy the greenery, waterfalls and natural attractions.

The effects of the monsoon brings different weather patterns to the southern Thai islands resulting in higher rainfall figures compared to the mainland. That doesn’t necessarily mean you should avoid the islands in the south, but be prepared for some potentially heavy downpours mixed in with the sunshine. During my travels in the south of Thailand during October I’ve experienced good, bad and indifferent weather on islands on the Andaman and Gulf Coast so you have to be prepared to take the rough with the smooth. The weather table below details the yearly averages for some of the most popular destinations in Thailand during October.

Which is the best Thai island or beach resort to visit in October?

There are no guarantees with the weather in Thailand during October and it’s impossible to predict what will happen on any given day. You could see hours of sunshine, you could see a torrential downpour or you could see a mix of the two. If you are spending a week or more on any Thai island during October you can definitely expect to see some rain. The downpours on the southern islands can be torrential in October, but that doesn’t mean it rains all day every day. Far from it. Visitors are also likely to experience plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures on the southern Thai islands in October. You’d be unlucky to see relentless rain for most of the day, but localised weather systems can develop and it can happen. Be prepared for rainy days and take that into consideration when booking accommodation and making travel plans. Boat services to outlying islands (e.g. the Trang islands ) can sometimes be disrupted and some bungalow operations on the quieter islands remain closed during October.

More developed islands such as Ko Samui and Phuket provide ample things to do for people of all ages if the weather does a take a turn for the worse. This makes them both good options for an island getaway in October. If you’re looking for a beach break with a better prospect for settled weather, consider staying on the mainland which tends to see less rainfall compared to the islands. Hua Hin and Cha Am south of Bangkok are solid options as is Pattaya on the east coast.

Accommodation It’s worth spending extra to get more comfort. Basic beach bungalows can be wonderful when the weather is perfect, but on a rainy afternoon you may be thankful for spending extra Baht on your accommodation if it includes free wi-fi, a TV and a gym. Compare Thailand hotels »

Southern Thailand Andaman Coast The first half of the month, especially on the more exposed islands in the Andaman Sea (e.g. the Trang islands ) can still see torrential downpours accompanied by gusty winds and rough seas which disrupt boat services. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t visit the Andaman Coast during October, but be prepared for potentially heavy downpours. Phuket and Krabi are less exposed and will still see ample sunshine and can be good choices in October, particularly the second half of the month.

Southern Thailand Gulf Coast For islands in the Gulf of Thailand, the amount of October rainfall in any given year depends on how early the north-east monsoon winds blow in. October on Ko Samui is usually wetter than September, but not as wet as November. On average, you should see less rain on the Gulf Coast islands during the first half of October compared to the second half. However, temperatures remain high throughout the month and you can also expect to see blue skies and plenty of sunshine during an October visit to Ko Samui, Ko Tao or Ko Pha Ngan .

Eastern Seaboard Pattaya generally sees decent weather during October with good amounts of sunshine. Heavy downpours can occur at any time, but are more likely to be late afternoon or early evening for a few hours before clearing away. In recent years the drainage system in Pattaya has sometimes struggled to cope with the rainy season deluges and localised flash flooding can occur. But it’s all part of the rainy season experience in Thailand and can be fascinating to watch how locals take it in their stride.

Ko Samet enjoys a sheltered location which means it is protected from the worst of the rainy season weather. The island does see rain in October, but levels are low and it is statistically one of the driest beach locations in Thailand to visit at this time of the year. Further east, Ko Chang and nearby islands see high levels of rainfall during October. However, the heaviest downpours usually occur at night. During the day you should see sunshine interspersed with isolated showers.

Be safe in the sea Always take note of warning flags on beaches. Sadly, too many people have ignored these on Thai beaches in the past and been caught up in rip tides. Another potential danger to look out for is the presence of jellyfish which do sometimes come close to shore during September and October. The risk can vary from year to year depending on weather conditions, but there have been fatalities in Thailand from box jellyfish stings. Warning notices and first-aid stations are placed on affected beaches.

October events and festivals in Thailand

  • Awk Phansa Awk Phansa is a Buddhist holiday to mark the end of the rains retreat and is accompanied by a host of merit-making events. One of the most common ones that visitors to Thailand in October may see is the khatina robes ceremony . Elsewhere around the kingdom, there are local festivals which reflect the culture of that particular province such as the Chong Para Festival in Mae Hong Son and the Buffalo Racing Festival in Chonburi .
  • Chulalongkorn Day October 23 is a national holiday in Thailand in honour of one of the most revered figures in Thai history, King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) .
  • Long-boat races Long-boat races are held in many provinces of Thailand from September through to November. In October, boat races are held in Buriram, Chachoengsao, Nan , Nakhon Sawan and Nakhon Ratchasima.
  • Vegetarian Festival The Vegetarian Festival often falls in October as part of the Taoist Lent period. Celebrated by Thais of Chinese heritage, the most famous examples of the Vegetarian Festival in Thailand can be found in Phuket and Bangkok’s Chinatown. There are also local events held in a number of other locations including Chiang Mai, Krabi, Pattaya and Trang.

The best time to visit Thailand

Silky-soft beaches, jungle-draped mountains, incredible food and a well-connected position at the heart of Southeast Asia have made Thailand a tourism hub for decades.

It welcomes more than 11 million visitors a year. All the same, travelers who dream of perpetually sunny skies and balmy weather might be dismayed at the pelting rain that arrives like clockwork every July or the sky-high price of their hotel from December to January.

The kingdom is full of diversions – myriad night markets, thundering waterfalls, even cherry blossoms and the occasional dusting of frost – but to experience them for yourself, you need to be in the right place at the right time. Here’s how.

Asian family enjoying summer vacation on the beach in morning with kids on their shoulders and the man pointing to something

December to February is best for beaches

The prevailing joke about Thai weather is that the country has three seasons: hot; wet and hot; and really, really hot. That may be, but when the “cool” season rolls around in December, you will find Thais bundled up in sweaters and even puffer jackets to combat temperatures that fall as low as 23°C (73°F).

While this may be cold for Thais, it’s perfect for international travelers hitting the beach, especially those escaping the northern winter, and resorts like Phuket , Samui and Krabi are predictably packed with sun-seekers at this time of year.

Daytime highs of 31°C (88°F) make outdoor activities warm but bearable, while nights are a hive of activity, with street food vendors lining the sidewalks and markets clad in fairy lights tempting even the most unwilling of shoppers.

The cool season is not for beachcombers alone. This time of year sees frost up north in the mountains as temperatures drop to 13°C (55°F). The northeast region even ushers in its own cherry blossom season as Phu Lom Lo erupts in a burst of pink Himalayan cherry blooms. Early morning hikers are rewarded with sunrise views over a sea of fog at the northern border with Laos , and wildflowers dapple the slopes of Doi Suthep and Phu Tabberk .

Not surprisingly then, this time is considered Thailand’s high season, when hotel and transportation prices are at their peak. However, the payoff is the kingdom at arguably its most beautiful and welcoming, temperature-wise.

Tourists spray water guns out of a tuk tuk on Khaosan Road during the Songkran festival in Bangkok, Thailand.

March and April are best for tropical fruit and Songkran

The weather, even for Thais, becomes alarmingly toasty during Thailand’s “summer” when temperatures average 30°C (87°F). School is out, meaning the capital is less crowded than usual, and the beaches are typically jammed with Bangkokians seeking reprieve from the heat. Meanwhile, temperatures in the usually temperate north soar to 36°C (97°F).

While it may seem a miserable time to visit, foodies will have a field day because all of Thailand’s most beloved fruits – mangoes, mangosteens, rambutans and Marian plums – are in season.

In mid-April, Thailand celebrates its new year, Songkran , and the streets burst into joyful water fights. You’ll find the entire country in celebration: families seeking blessings from their elders, Thais dancing in the streets, and travelers receiving benedictions in the form of perfumed water on the hands, daubings of brightly colored powder on the cheeks or (most likely) a blast of water in the face. Fans of water fights (and getting drenched) will find their like-minded brethren anywhere in the kingdom.

Meanwhile, fans of an empty Bangkok can take advantage of… an empty Bangkok. That means breezy commutes from one end of the city to the other, less competition at popular restaurants and fewer crowds to contend with at shopping malls and theaters. The change in the city is so pronounced that quite a few Bangkokians prize this time of year, opting to make sure that when Songkhran rolls around, they celebrate in the capital.

May to October is best for accommodation bargains

Thailand’s rainy season is long, but it doesn’t necessarily mean non-stop torrential downpours. Monsoon rains, especially before July, are typically violent but short, usually arriving in the early evening and lasting for 20 to 30 minutes. (Luckily, Thailand’s location means it avoids the strong typhoons experienced by Vietnam and the Philippines.) The problem is Bangkok traffic snarls for hours as a result, but travelers in less congested destinations are not necessarily affected, and hotel and transportation prices linger at months-long lows.

From May to July, beach resorts on the Andaman Sea side of Thailand – especially on weekdays – are basically deserted, claiming only a fraction of the prices they would normally charge during high season. This means that even at five-star resorts, choice rooms can be rented for far less than their usual rate. And while there will likely be daily rains, they’re usually brief.

Low-season rates extend to non-beach-but-still-popular destinations like Chiang Mai and Khao Sok , where a treasure trove of accommodation options, from floating bungalows to mountaintop cabins, awaits savvy bargain hunters willing to put up with a sudden shower or two. In contrast, July and August are peak season for islands in the Gulf of Thailand like Samui , where the weather is less affected by monsoon rains.

From September to October, the northeast is brimming with waterfalls, providing impromptu bathing areas for visitors with the foresight to bring bathing suits or even just towels. A word of warning: this is also when flooding may occur in the north or northeast, with water reaching all the way to Bangkok in some years. Only riverside areas are at risk, so make sure to check before you go.

Scores of lit lanterns float in the dark skies of Thailand as part of the Loi Krathong festival

November is best for experiencing Loi Krathong

November marks the beginning of the dry season and is considered the shoulder to high season, but bargains can still be found among the bigger local hotel chains.

On the night of November’s full moon, the country celebrates its Loi Krathong festival, marking the end of the rainy season. This is also when people float away their sins by placing candles on makeshift river rafts or lanterns in hopes of welcoming the coming year with a clean slate.

October in Bangkok usually sees a lot of rainfall, but that doesn't mean it isn't a good time to visit. Going to see a Thai Boxing match is one of the best things to do in Bangkok. With the adrenaline rush and excitement, you will be in for an experience that will stay with you all your life. Not a Fan of Boxing? Then be entertained by cabaret dancers. The Lady-boy dancers in the cabaret show leave the audience astonished, making it one of the best experiences in Bangkok in October. Also, Bangkok is one of the best places to eat a variety of unique dishes in many restaurants. So whether you want Spicy Shrimp or Chicken soup, different Bangkok restaurants have something to offer everyone.

Last but not least, hire a cab and roam around the city. The Grand Palace , Wat Arun , Wat Pho , and  Ocean World are some main attractions here. Also, check out the many other places to visit in Bangkok .

3.  Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai is one of the largest cities in Thailand. It was the former capital of the Lanna Kingdom. Sometimes called the 'Art Capital" of Thailand, Chiang Rai has some beautiful temples that are never seen anywhere in the world. There are several attractions in Chiang Rai you shouldn't miss. Wat Rong Khun temple is one of the beautiful non-traditional Buddhist temples in Chiang Rai. Also, Wat Rong Suen Ten is a beautiful temple built not too long ago. The deep blue color of the temple resembles the sky. And the interior paintings on the wall tell the life of Buddha. Also, one of the more interesting places in Chiang Rai is the Black House Museum. Walking around the house gets eerie but exciting, with plenty of skulls, hides, and whole skeletons. Finally, Chiang Rai Night Bazaar is the best place to get a glimpse of the heart of town. With plenty of shops for shopping and food courts to eat in, you will not get bored here quickly.

5. Naga Fireball Festival

As the Buddhist Lent ends in October on the night of the full moon, the town of Nong Khai celebrates very peculiarly. This town is located on the shore of the river Mekong in North Eastern Thailand. During this celebration, you can experience queer reddish balls rising hundreds of meters into the sky from the water, giving the appearance of fireballs. Thousands of tourists from Thailand and beyond flock to the river bank to experience this phenomenon. This spooky celebration is a spectacle with visitors lighting fireworks before the natural orbs start appearing, dancing, eating and drinking, and celebrating joyfully. Initially, it was a one-night gathering, but now, this sighting has become a week-long celebration with bazaars, food markets, performances, and competitions. The government also hosts a boat parade with a great sound and light display, seeing the festival's popularity. The best places to experience this event include Nong Khai, Phon Phisai, and Rattanawapi.

Thailand: October

Thailand: October

  • Bid farewell to the rain and welcome the winter; admiring the beautiful month between two seasons.
  • Indulge in the sea of mist on top of the mountains.
  • Join the Tak Bat Devo Festival and Vegetarian Festival, great cultural charms of Thailand .
  • Let’s end this month with Halloween, a spooky but colourful festival.

This time of the year is called “the end of the rainy season and the beginning of winter” because October is like a bridge between the rainy season and winter in Thailand . Definitely, the temperature of this month starts to drop in almost every region of the country and the cool and cozy weather is returning. This is the great time to travel to the top of mountains to closely experience the sea of mist or head out to dive into a coral reef and immerse yourself in the beautiful sea.

In October, you can travel to every region in Thailand from the Northern mountains to the Southern seas, starting from driving along natural routes with beautiful views of forests, mountains and the sea of mist at Doi Samer Dao - Doi Mae Chok - Doi Phu Kha – Mae Charim in Nan province. Then, we move down to a province in the Western region: Tak . In this province, you can travel through the jungle, admire the amazing beauty of cave stalactites or refresh yourself at Mae Usu Cave - Pha Charoen Waterfall - Thi Lo Su Waterfall - Khao Phra Bat - Bhumibol Dam.  The Northeastern part of Thailand has many destinations for you to enjoy as well. You can experience the mountain atmosphere and local cultures at Phu Ruea - Chiang Khan – Dan Sai in Loei province.

If you fancy a trip to some beaches and seas in October, you can start planning it now because the monsoon season is ending, leaving the serene and beautiful Gulf of Thailand for you to explore. There’s a rich variety of islands waiting for you in the Eastern sea, like Ko Kut Island - Ko Kham - Ko Kradat  - Ko Chang– Ko Mak in Trat province , and the Southern sea, like the Mu Ko Similan National Park in Phang Nga province, as well.

In addition to amazing tourist attractions all over the country, there are many traditions, festivals and cultures that can be seen and learned about in this month; for instance, around the end of the Buddhist Lent period, you can join the Bang Fai Phaya Nak or Naga Fireball Festival in Nong Khai province,  a festival where you can see the fascinating sight of fireballs rising out of the Mekong River up to the sky, or you can attend the Tak Bat Devo Festival at Wat Sangkat Rattanakhiri in Uthai Thani province, a Buddhist festival that is greatly celebrated annually. Every year, a lot of tourists visit Uthai Thani to view the sight of more than 500 monks walking down from the summit of Khao Sakae Krang to receive alms from Buddhists. This unique ceremony can be seen only in Thailand .

In October, there’s another festival that can be called a highlight of this month, a festival filled with colours and horror: Halloween. Although the Halloween festival wasn’t originated in Thailand , various places are decorated with black and orange tones, pumpkins and other symbols that represent the festival.

Vegetarians will love October’s dishes thanks to this mid-season festival, theVegetarian Festival or “Thesakan Kin Che”. During this annual 10-day festival, people won’t eat meat and a number of restaurants all over the country also serve menus without meat. Moreover, some provinces celebrate this festival with a parade of gods and spectacular shows. One of the most famous provinces is Phuket. There’s also the Sat Thai and Kluai Khai Banana Festival in Kamphaeng Phet province  where you can enjoy shopping and eating a rich variety of well-known OTOP products.

This October is said to be a farewell to the rainy season and a welcome to the months of winter. There are many different tourist attractions to choose from and to visit throughout Thailand . Some places’ amazing beauty can only be seen during the bridge of two seasons like this month. If you’ve read until this sentence, it’s time to prepare your favourite backpack or suitcase and set out to gain a new memorable experience of October.

Thailand Weather in October

View through the jungle to uninhabited beach in Laem Sing Beach, Thailand

October comes at the forefront of the cool, dry season – generally regarded as the best time to visit Thailand. Although this season officially only begins in November, it makes itself known in October with temperatures and humidity falling to more comfortable levels as the month progresses. Amounts of rainfall across the country also drop substantially starting from the second half of the month.

Daytime temperatures across the country range from 29 to 31°C during this month. In Bangkok, for instance, the mercury can soar to 33°C, while the low stays at 25°C. On average, it rains for 15 days in the capital in October. Chiang Mai in the north, on the other hand, receives almost half the rain of Bangkok during this time of year. The driest part of the country is Udon Thani, which sees just 82 mm of rain in October in an average year.

For a seasonal overview, read our article on the best time to visit Thailand .

Why visit thailand in october.

Thailand possess different islands considered paradises in their own right.

Since it is more than possible to visit the heart of Asia at any time of year, why should you choose to visit Thailand in October? Here are just a few of our favorite reasons.

  • Low-season pricing: The peak tourist season may just be a couple of weeks away, but until you pass the threshold of November 1, there are still some great flight and accommodation bargains to be struck.
  • Fewer crowds: Because of October’s unfair reputation as falling in the wet season, most travelers stay clear of the country, leaving museums, beaches, and cultural attractions largely free of crowds. Since there are fewer crowds, take a looks at our beach tours in Thailand .
  • Surfing: Thailand’s west coast, on the Andaman Sea, has the best conditions for surfing from April until October. You have still got time to grab a wetsuit and hit the waves here during your trip to the country this month before moving on to the east coast, where the surfing season lasts from October to December.
  • Hiking: Cooler temperatures of October make it the first month since summer when it is possible to contemplate hiking. The best walks can be had on trails linking the small hillside villages of the country’s north. If you’re interested, you may want to check out our hiking tours in Thailand .
  • Whale-watching and dolphin-spotting: Traveling to Thailand in October means getting a chance to see Bryde’s whales off the coast of Bangkok. This is also when the river dolphins of the city’s Chao Phraya River are most often spotted.

Where to go and what to do

The change in weather between the start and the end of October means that with a little careful planning you can explore all of Thailand in October rather than be limited to one coast or the other. Discover the hill station of Chiang Mai, located in the north of the country, where temperatures tend to be at their lowest. Walk or cycle forest paths in search of elephants before drifting down to the dream-like beaches of Phuket.

Head out to islands to snorkel among reefs or take the opportunity to spot whales. Spend a few days in Bangkok, which is well worth visiting for its markets and ever-expanding food scene besides its incredible heritage and architecture. October also usually sees the nine-day-long celebration of the Kin Jay Vegetarian Festival, a cleansing ceremony that sees many restaurants put up yellow flags to show they are only serving vegan cuisine. For more information, read out our article on how many days to spend in Thailand .

Pleasant weather conditions in most parts combined with the country’s multitude of charms ensure that all types of travelers, from history buffs to beach bums, get their fill during a trip to Thailand in October. Slowly and steadily, visitors are starting to discover the benefits of heading to the country during this month.

North (chiang mai, kanchanaburi).

thailand in october north

This is the perfect time to visit anywhere from Bangkok and further north before peak winter tourism hits. The hippie vibes of Pai in the North may be especially attractive to some. Also in the North is a marvel of nature with no clear answer in science that rivals the aurora borealis or Northern Lights. Smokeless, silent balls of fire, known as the Naga Fireballs of Nong Khai, erupt from Mekong River and are waited on breathlessly by onlookers.

This only takes place twice in the year, for a few days in May and then again in October. May is too hot, so this is truly the time to appreciate this wonder. The locals call it bung fai paya nak and believe the fireballs are the overheated breath of Naga, a river serpent in Buddhist mythology said to roam the river in these parts. Find a chatty local to tell you about the monster and they’re likely to describe encounters or legends of the creature from their childhood.

The fireballs can be as tiny as a spark and as large as a basketball and appear in numbers ranging from ten to thousands a night along a 100 km stretch of the river. They rise from the water a few hundred meters into the sky before evaporating without a trace as though a backwards explosion.

Hundreds of thousands flock to the Mekong riverbanks for the show, also known as Bang Fai Phaya Nark Festival. The centre of the buzz is the town of Phon Phisai and the locals will be happy to share current intel on the best viewing spots. The festival features fireball exhibitions, food stalls, information on the Naga legend, a night market, long-boat races before the show, and light and sound infotainment.

Do keep an eye out for the Phon Phisai parade of villagers in traditional costume, carrying pictures of the Naga and marching to the accompanying band. Once the procession has passed, visitors will settle in to wait. Make sure to come with supplies to last hours as there is no knowing when and how many fireballs will erupt.

Doi Ithanon National Park in Chiang Mai is the destination at this time for mountain and mist lovers. “The roof of Thailand” is part of the Himalayan mountain range and experiences high humidity yet cool weather all year round.

Grab a good pair of shoes, a flashlight and mosquito repellent, then take to the trail. There are spectacular views on offer in the deep quiet only punctuated by the trilling of forest birds and the buzzing of striking insects. Cool off at a waterfall on your way down.

There is no place to experience the end of Buddhist Lent better than the Nakhon Phanom Illuminated Boat Procession, or Lai Ruea Fai. Held from 6th to 14th October every year, this grand and graceful festival features boats heaped with candles, incense sticks, lanterns and flowers or lit up with tiny lights. The intricately designed boats are made of banana or bamboo tree trunks. About twenty of them set out on the Mekong River in a stately procession for 4 kilometers, creating a visual treat to remember for a lifetime.

With time, the boats have become larger and grander and can be up to 90 meters long! The boat building commences at the beginning of October and lasts three weeks, with curious onlookers throughout. It is believed that the end of lent marks the Buddha’s return to Earth from heaven. The lit boats are then a sign of welcome and respect.

As you wait for the show to begin, you can wind through the street stalls, wander in and out of cultural exhibits and enjoy a cultural performance or two. Don’t be shy to join the locals in their folk dances if you wish to.

In Krabi the rain is scant, so you can soak in hot springs in the luxurious lap of pristine nature. Klong Thom Hot Springs make for the perfect spa date, solo or coupled. Hot springs bubble up on the smooth rock from volcanic depths. The warm, gushing water is rich with natural mineral salts, said to cure various health issues including skin issues like sciatica.

There is also a cool stream to swim in and a nearby emerald pool. While you’re at it, take a walk in the nature reserve to work up a good appetite.

vegetarian-festival-in-phuket-in-october

But the celebration in the island of Phuket in Southern Thailand is the  biggest and most famous. In fact, it is held at 31 temples across the province.

Devotees in Phuket enter into trances (or so they claim). And they engage in various acts of  self-mutilation. Examples include body piercing, walking on hot coals, and climbing razor sharp ladders. Definitely not for the faint of heart!

The Vegetarian Festival takes place during the ninth month of the Chinese Lunar Year . Therefore, the dates of the celebration on the Gregorian Calendar are different each year. In addition, the dates of the festival are not exactly the same in all of the Thai cities where it is celebrated.

Thailand Weather in October

October is a great month for central and northern Thailand: temperatures are agreeable, the sun shines regularly and it rains a lot less than it did in the previous months. That’s the good news. The bad news? The south of Thailand is cloudy and it rains a lot. The best alternative: Koh Chang and the eastern Gulf of Thailand!

What to expect of the weather in Thailand in October

Bangkok and the surrounding area

October is when the rainy season starts to make way for the cool season. Temperatures improve (less warm), it’s sunny more often and there’s only the occasional heavy, tropical downpour. The scenery is absolutely stunning during these months.

Ayutthaya – Soak up the culture and visit historical temples. Bangkok – Thailand’s capital blends old temples with ultra modern skyscrapers. Kanchanaburi – Town brimming with nature and history. Khao Yai National Park – The oldest nature reserve with wild elephants. Koh Samet – White sandy beaches, only three hours from Bangkok.

Koh Samui and the southeastern Gulf of Thailand

No more sunny days in the southeastern part of the Gulf of Thailand. Koh Tao, in particular, will see some fairly rough weather. Expect rainfall every day on Koh Samui and Koh Phangan as well, though not in the same quantity. It won’t be until January that the weather in this region will start to improve.

Koh Phangan – Serene island that hosts large beach parties. Koh Samui – Popular island with long beaches and luxury accommodation. Koh Tao – Thailand’s number 1 island for snorkeling and diving.

Chiang Mai and the North of Thailand

Just as in Bangkok, the intense rain of the previous months has come to an end. It’s a great time to explore Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pai and Mae Hong Son, as you’ll be there before most of the tourists arrive. The rice fields are at their most beautiful this month as well. Seize the opportunity and get to know the area!

Chiang Mai – A great city surrounded by nature and rich in culture. Chiang Rai – Gorgeous natural surroundings and best known for the white temple. Mae Hong Son – Mountain tribes and rice fields near the Burmese border. Pai – Hippie-at-heart mountain village nestled in Thailand’s most beautiful valley.

Phuket and Krabi

October in Krabi and Phuket, in the Andaman Sea, is mostly very wet, but you might get lucky and stumble upon a few sunny days. Luckily, the weather will improve a lot in the coming months.

Khao Sok National Park – Wake up in a straw cabin on a clear blue lake. Koh Jum – Small-scale tourism near Koh Phi Phi. Koh Lanta – Laid-back atmosphere and nice beaches. Koh Phayam – Gorgeous but underdeveloped island. Koh Phi Phi – Thailand’s number 1 tropical party island. Koh Yao Yai – Big island with long and empty beaches. Krabi (Ao Nang) – The perfect place to start your island-hopping adventure. Phuket – Thailand’s largest island, best known for its beaches.

Koh Chang and the Eastern Gulf of Thailand

Finally, the nice weather has reached Koh Chang and Koh Kood! Enjoy the sunshine as the tourist season slowly starts getting underway. Go on a jungle hike, visit undiscovered waterfalls or enjoy the many beautiful beaches of Koh Chang and Koh Kood. Though it might still rain every now and again, it’s a good time to go on snorkeling and diving trips.

Koh Chang – Pleasant island with beautiful beaches and a laid-back atmosphere. Koh Kood – A gorgeous, and partially unspoiled, island. Koh Mak – Small-scale tourism, laid-back atmosphere. Koh Wai – Snorkeling island between Koh Chang and Koh Kood.

Koh Lipe and the Trang islands

The rainy season is coming to an end on Koh Lipe, though there are still a few weeks of rain to go. October and September are Koh Lipe’s wettest months. On the plus side, the rain is warm and it’s still possible to go for a refreshing swim in the sea. From November onwards the weather on Koh Lipe and the Trang islands will start to improve and become sunnier.

Koh Lipe – Tropical island, home to Thailand’s most beautiful beaches. Koh Mook – Small-scale tourism and a spectacular cave. Koh Ngai – Long golden beaches and no roads. Koh Tarutao – National park, a former prison island, and camping site.

Isan region

Although heavy showers still occur, the rainy season in Thailand’s northeast is effectively over. Temperatures are more comfortable (less warm and humid) and the sun appears more. The natural surroundings are green and lively, making this a great month for exploring the area!

Pha Taem National Park – Ancient murals along the Mekong River. Phimai – Thailand’s most beautiful Angkor Wat temples. Ubon Ratchathani – Large city in Isan region with many sights. Udon Thani – Large city near the Lao border, but famous mainly for its Red Lotus Sea.

The Worst Times to Visit Thailand

Avoiding the hot season if possible.

Thailand's hot season, from April to June, brings soaring temperatures and intense humidity, peaking in April and May at over 40°C (104°F). If you're not a fan of the heat, be sure to avoid those months.

Tips for Travelling during the Hot Season:

  • Explore northern regions like Chiang Mai, where the climate is generally cooler compared to the southern parts of the country.
  • Engage in water-based activities to cool off, such as visiting coastal areas or islands.

Avoiding the Rainy Season If Possible

While the rainy season (July to October) graces Thailand with lush landscapes, it also brings short afternoon showers and potential disruptions due to monsoons and storms.

However, you can revel in the perks of serene locales with fewer crowds and attractive prices.

Tips for Travelling the Rainy Season:

  • Explore eastern and northern regions during the rainy season, as they typically receive less rainfall compared to the southern areas.
  • Keep an eye on weather forecasts and plan indoor activities on days when rain is expected.
  • Consider the sun-kissed beauty of Bali as a radiant alternative when Thailand is drenched in rain.

Thailand Weather in January: Nice Weather

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 15–25°C (59–77°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 25–32°C (77–89°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 26–32°C (79–89°F)

January offers great weather conditions, whether for city sightseeing or beach holidays.

It is a popular tourist season in Thailand, especially in tourist hotspots, such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, and Koh Samui. Expect larger crowds at popular attractions and book accommodations in advance.

Events and Festivals

The key festival, when it is in January, Chinese New Year, is celebrated right across the country, especially in Bangkok's Chinatown.

Suggested read: Thailand in January: the top 5 places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in February: Nice Weather

Similar to the weather of January, February's weather is still nice, warm, and dry.

Good weather means almost anywhere is a good place to plan your holiday.

Beautiful islands and beaches are also good places to go — Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak... All kinds of water activities enjoy ideal conditions.

Thailand Weather in March: The Heat Builds

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 20–30°C (68–86°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 28–35°C (82–95°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 28–34°C (82–93°F)

March is still a fabulous month to visit Thailand, especially in the first half of the month, though it starts to heat up in March. It's advisable to stay hydrated, especially in the central region with warmer temperatures.

During this season, you can go literally anywhere in Thailand thanks to the low rainfall. Water-related activities in the southern islands are enjoyable.

Suggested read: Thailand in March: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in April: Hottest

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 25–35°C (77–95°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 29–35°C (86–97°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 29–35°C (84–95°F)

April is the hottest month in Thailand. It is not unusual for temperatures to exceed 30°C (95°F) all day and night!

The heat in Chiang Mai during April gets even more oppressive than in Bangkok. Chiang Rai is slightly cooler by 1 or 2°C but is still hot nonetheless.

For beach lovers, you are almost guaranteed some blue skies and clear seas. Staying in a beach resort will be at least 4 or 5°C cooler than in Bangkok or Chiang Mai.

Festivals and Events

Thai New Year (Songkran Festival) is the biggest, longest, and most enjoyable festival in Thailand. It is a 3-day-long water fight that takes place throughout the country!

Suggested read: Thailand in April: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in May: The Rains Start

  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 31–36°C (88–97°F)

May is still hot and starts to be wet with it, as Thailand begins its rainy season. The rainy season is in full swing by the end of the month.

The weather in Bangkok and other cities in May starts to get extremely humid. Koh Samui is better than Phuket and Krabi to go because rainfall during May is much lower on the Gulf of Thailand than on the Andaman Coast.

May sees the end of the high season, which means that prices on hotels and flights begin to drop, bringing great value for visitors.

Suggested read: Thailand in May: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in June: Wet and Hot

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 28–38°C (82–100°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 29–35°C (84–95°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 27–33°C (81–91°F)

Thailand can expect an average of 15 to 22 days of rain in June. However, the rain is usually short-lived, occurring in short bursts in the afternoon or evening.

This tourism low season is the best time to travel to Thailand for prices and quietness, with more choices of accommodation and various different promotions.

For beachgoers, Ko Samui and Hua Hin are the best destinations as they are not so affected by the rains at this time.

Suggested read: Thailand in June: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in July: Wet

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 28–36°C (82–97°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 28–34°C (82–93°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 27–32°C (81–89°F)

July experiences heavy rainfall, so be prepared for wet conditions.

The southern islands are affected by the monsoon in July, which brings heavy rains and turbulent waves to the west coast.

However, the east coast (Koh Samui, Koh Tao, etc) experiences fewer showers during this season and has relatively good weather in July. You can still enjoy sunny days at the beach on these islands.

Some urban areas, such as Bangkok, remain hot and wet. Staying refreshed with indoor swimming pool visits and cold showers will help relieve any discomfort.

Suggested read: Thailand in July: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in August: Wet

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 27–35°C (81–95°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 27–33°C (81–91°F)

Like July, August is one of the best times to visit Koh Samui and the surrounding islands. Though there are some brief rains, it is much better than the other side of the peninsula in Phuket, Krabi, Koh Chang, and the Phi Phi Islands.

A trip to Thailand in August can be a cost-effective opportunity to enjoy scenic spots and quiet beaches without the crowds.

Suggested read: Thailand in August: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in September: Wettest

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 25–32°C (77–89°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 26–32°C (79–89°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 26–31°C (79–88°F)

September is the wettest month in Thailand. But actually, only some rural areas are significantly affected by the rains during the wet season, such as the mountainous north around Chiang Mai.

Destinations like Bangkok offer travelers plenty to do and see, even when it's raining outside. Koh Samui is recommended for beach holidays in September as it is less affected by the rains.

Rains do not disrupt the travel experience too much for some, as it seldom rains all day long.

Suggested read: Thailand in September: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in October: End of the Rains

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 22–30°C (72–86°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 24–31°C (75–88°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 25–30°C (77–86°F)

Thailand experiences high or very high rainfall again in October, except in Northern Thailand where the rainy season already tails off to moderate levels.

The monsoon rain eases off with less rainfall and lower temperatures by the end of October in most of Thailand. However, Koh Samui begins its peak rainy season at this time.

Some visitors come to Thailand at the end of October to wait for the annual grand Thailand Lantern Festival in early November. Bangkok and Chiang Mai are the main venues.

Suggested read: Thailand in October: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in November: Peak Season Starts

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 18–28°C (64–82°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 23–30°C (73–86°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 24–30°C (75–86°F)

Thailand's peak travel season starts from November. The rains and heat are gone or going from most of the country.

You can venture out without any worries of getting drenched, EXCEPT on the east coast, which receives a massive half a meter of rain in November.

Islands on the Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi Island, Similan Islands, etc.) are ideal places to go, by contrast, with only moderate rainfall.

Bangkok and Chiang Mai, with low rainfall, are the most popular cities in November for the Thailand Lantern Festivals .

Suggested read: Thailand in November: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in December: Coolest

  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 22–31°C (72–88°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 23–39°C (73–84°F)

December is the coolest month in Thailand, but it's still warm everywhere but in the cool/mild mountainous north.

December is a great time to visit most areas in Thailand (Koh Samui is still in rainy season though) and is also the country's busiest month for tourism.

There are celebrations on Christmas and New Year's Eve in Thailand. Shopping malls in Thailand have big sales from late December to early January. If you're planning a trip to Thailand over the Christmas and New Year period, try to book as early as possible. Popular hotels are usually booked up 3-6 months in advance.

TAT to organise October festival to draw Chinese tourists to Thailand

TAT to organise October festival to draw Chinese tourists to Thailand

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is planning a month-long event titled ‘Nihao Festival’ from October 1-31 to lure Chinese tourists looking to holiday in Thailand during the Chinese National Day break, governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool said on Thursday.

October 1-8 is considered China’s ‘National Day Golden Week’, a time when millions of Chinese travel to their hometowns as well as internationally.

Thapanee said the Nihao Festival will feature events in Bangkok’s Chinatown or Yaowarat to celebrate Chinese National Day. The TAT has tasked its branch offices in provinces that are popular among Chinese tourists, such as Chiang Mai and Phuket, to submit plans for events to be organised during October to welcome Chinese arrivals and create a positive impression.

Thapanee added that the TAT would urge tour agencies to offer promotions on tour packages, discounts on airfares, as well as special gifts for Chinese tourists during October, which will help boost the number of foreign arrivals.

The TAT also reported that from January 1 to April 14, a total of 2.03 million Chinese nationals entered Thailand, topping the chart of foreign arrivals.

The agency has set a target of welcoming 8 million Chinese tourists this year, who will help generate income of around 350 billion baht. The TAT expects to welcome at least 35 million foreign arrivals this year, generating 2.3 trillion baht in tourism revenue.

Thapanee said the TAT planned to use events and festivals to attract foreign arrivals during the second half of the year to achieve this target, including the Summer Sonic Bangkok music festival in August and the International Food Festival in November.

The TAT governor also said that the organisation of Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2024 from April 11-15 at Bangkok’s Sanam Luang was a massive success with higher-than-expected participation from Thai and foreign tourists. The TAT estimates that from April 1-21, some 20 million tourists will be travelling across Thailand, about 2 million of them foreign visitors.

The Songkran Festival alone would generate tourism income of around 150 billion baht, she said.

Trial opens in Thailand for the son of Spanish actors over the killing of a Colombian surgeon

Daniel Sancho Bronchalo

Thailand’s court began a trial Tuesday of the son of Spanish actors accused of killing and dismembering a Colombian surgeon  on a popular tourist island.

Daniel Sancho Bronchalo, 29, was indicted in October over the death of Edwin Arrieta Arteaga, whose remains were found stuffed in plastic bags at a landfill on Koh Pha Ngan, an island famous for its rave-style “full moon parties.”

Lawyer Juan Gonzalo Ospina Serrano, who represents Arrieta’s family, told reporters at the Koh Samui Provincial Court before the trial that the family trusts Thai prosecutors to deliver justice.

“They are grateful and hope that Thai law is forceful and that the truth can be told,” he said.

The charges against Sancho include premeditated murder, concealment of a body and destruction of other people’s documents. Sancho pleaded not guilty for premeditated murder and destruction of documents but pleaded guilty for hiding the victim’s body.

The charge of premeditated murder carries a possible death penalty. The concealment or damaging of a dead body is punishable by a year in prison.

The trial is opening with statements from witnesses brought in by the plaintiff, said Apichart Srinual, a Thai lawyer who represents Sancho.

When asked whether he is confident about his defense case, Aprichart said “it depends on the evidence,” adding that “there are a lot of witnesses. It depends on what they will say.”

Sancho was driven to the court in a closed car and was not visible to reporters waiting outside. Sancho’s father, Spanish actor Rodolfo Sancho, also came to the court but declined comment.

Sancho, a chef, was arrested in August after the remains of Arrieta, 44, were discovered at the landfill.

Police said Sancho came in to report a missing person and was subsequently detained. He later reportedly confessed to killing and dismembering Arrieta and dumping the body parts in the landfill and the sea, though he denied that his action was premeditated, according to police.

Thailand’s Tourist Towns Deal With Their Own Russian Invasion

Rich Russians Isolated From the West Are Flocking to Thailand's Phuket

I t’s just past 11 p.m. on Phuket’s neon-festooned Bangla Road and revelers are out in force, though the heady atmosphere is distinctly more Sochi than Southeast Asia. TVs overhanging the sprawling beer bars show ice skating instead of soccer; Cyrillic signage proliferates; and Russian-speaking touts dispense flyers for pole-dancing clubs exclusively featuring women from former Soviet republics. “Russians, Ukrainian, Belorussian, Kazakhs,” says one tout in dark Ray Bans and a skin-tight Armani polo shirt. “We have them all here.”

The war in Ukraine has entailed an incalculable human toll, while roiling markets, disrupting supply chains, and sending inflation soaring across the globe. But in Thailand, the two-year-old conflict is also having a profound social effect despite being over 4,000 miles away. While many Western nations have shut out Russian air travel in response to Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Thailand sees Russian arrivals as key to reviving its pandemic-ravaged tourism industry. In October, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin extended 90-day visas upon arrival for Russian passports, insisting in a February interview : “We’re not part of the [Ukraine] conflict. We are neutral.”

Last year, Russians ranked top for tourist arrivals in Thailand from outside of Asia with 1.4 million visitors. Meanwhile, Russians were top overall on the southern resort island of Phuket, which has long been a favorite haunt. Last July, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Phuket to inaugurate a new consulate to cope with surging visitor numbers. A month later, the Phuket Tourist Association sent a delegation to St. Petersburg and Moscow seeking to court even more vacationers.

In the first three months of this year, 366,095 Russians arrived at Phuket International Airport, almost double the same period of 2023 and transforming the island’s commercial and social life. (That figure doesn’t include the significant number who transferred via Thailand’s main gateway of Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok.) But while a boon for the macro economy, the influx has chafed with locals who increasingly complain that Russians are stealing jobs and upsetting cultural mores. Across Thailand, lurid headlines such as “ Rabid Russian assaults police team in Phuket after going berserk at a city centre hotel ” and “ Russian tourist kicks pregnant Thai woman after asked to leave shoes outdoor ” are both a symptom and cause of alarm. (However, transgressions involving New Zealand , Swiss , and Portuguese nationals admittedly proliferate also.)

“Russia and Thailand are so different and sometimes they don’t understand Thai law and culture,” Lieut. Colonel Akachai Siri, chief inspector of Phuket Tourist Police, tells TIME. “Sometimes they break the law and they don’t recognize we have law enforcement.”

Nevertheless, Thailand’s Russian incursion appears here to stay. Other than the preferential visas, sanctions on Russian air carriers and reciprocal bans on Western airlines have slashed the destinations where Russian nationals can escape their frigid winter, making already-popular Thailand an easier choice. And then there are the not inconsiderable numbers fleeing economic doldrums and a war of choice that they had no part in choosing—not least since the Kremlin has ramped up military conscription amid mounting casualties .

“That was the final straw for us,” says Mark, a Russian who fled to Thailand with his boyfriend after an initial draft announcement in September 2022 and asked that TIME use a pseudonym for security. “We understood we can’t go back because anyone can be called to the army and just die in the war.”

As a result, the number of Russians choosing to stay in Thailand long-term is soaring. Beyond 90-day visas upon arrival, thousands are applying for one-year business or education visas. Arnold, who asked that TIME use only one name for fear of reprisals in his homeland, moved from Moscow to the Thai resort town of Hua Hin permanently last year and has noticed an increase in what are colloquially termed “ relocants ” fleeing the “various negative things which are going on back home.”

The affluent are acquiring luxury cars and yachts and renting or purchasing villas. Phuket’s plush Laguna beachfront complex of villas, ornamental lake, and 18-hole golf course is now dubbed “Little Moscow,” says Bhummikitti Ruktaengam, advisory chairman to Phuket’s Tourist Association. Over half of all residents across its 1,000 acres are Russian, according to the Laguna real estate management office, which employs two native Russian speakers to deal with the shifting demographic. Across Phuket, real estate prices have bumped some 20% owing to the Russian influx, says Bhummikitti.

The incursion has also increased pressure on Akachai’s Tourist Police, which has only 60 officers to assist the 2,000-odd regular Royal Thai Police and 60 dedicated Immigration Police across both Phuket and the larger adjacent province of Pha Nga. In addition to swelling tourist numbers, whereas 60% of tourists before the pandemic traveled on tour groups with guides and agents on hand to smooth any problems, today, 70% are independent travelers, which means the Tourist Police are increasingly called to mediate all manner of conflicts.

Relaxed entry requirements have also attracted a criminal element. In early February, Phuket police arrested five suspected Russian gangsters for the kidnapping and extortion of over $800,000 in cryptocurrency from a Belarussian couple that Akachai says was retaliation for a financial dispute back home. And last month, a 42-year-old Russian man was found stabbed to death in a rented house that was being used as a cannabis farm. The chief suspect is a Tajikistani man who fled Thailand for Turkey just hours after the murder.

Yet Akachai says most crimes relate to illegal work involving Russians determined not to return home while the war rages but without the means to support themselves indefinitely—not least since international banking sanctions have rendered accessing savings more difficult. Many Russians have set themselves up as unofficial tour guides, car and motorbike rental services, real estate agents, hairdressers, or even sex workers, advertising online via Telegram groups.

Yet not all aspects of the phenomenon are troublesome. Other than Russians, a significant number of Ukrainians have fled their war torn nation for Thailand, potentially creating a tinderbox atmosphere. But Akachai says he has not encountered a single skirmish or negative incident between the two nationalities in Phuket. Yury Rozhkov, 46, a Russian national who works for a travel agency in Bangkok, says he regularly meets Ukrainians staying in his apartment building and relations are nothing but cordial.

“They understand it’s Putin, it’s not Russia, Russian people are different,” he says. “And I’m sure Russians who have money to travel to Thailand do not support Putin and the war in Ukraine.”

In Hua Hin, Arnold is a member of a Russian-language Telegram group with more than 4,500 members from across the former Soviet bloc, but he says he cannot recall a single politically charged message among the 400 or so posted every day. “99.9% of discussions are where to find the best pad thai, current prices in the local market, how to rent a car, or where to get a vaccine,” he says.

Perched by the main gate of Phuket’s Laguna resort, the d’Odessa restaurant serves Ukrainian syrniki pancakes and smoked salmon croissants slathered with gold leaf. The tablet menu has options for Ukrainian, English, and Russian—and staff say the majority of clientele speak the latter. “There are many Ukrainian restaurants filled with Russians in Phuket,” says Bhummikitti.

Ultimately, both sides caught up in this senseless conflict share a desire to stay out of harm’s way by whatever means necessary. Mark is still employed by his Russian IT company thanks to an understanding boss despite remote working being strictly against company policy. Every day he fears a draft ticket or internal enquiries by higher management could spell the end to that vital paycheck. If that happens, “I will try to find a local job or another [remote] job in Russia,” he says. “I will try every way I can not to go back.”
