32 Inspirational Gardening Quotes

These will make you laugh and smile—and want to get your hands dirty again.

  • Indoor Gardening

I'm not much of a gardener, but I definitely want to learn more. Last year was the first time in many years that I really went for it in a couple small plots. I was pleased as punch that some of what I planted actually grew! Of course, there were some failures, too, but overall my experience made me excited to try gardening again this year.

It is a lot of work, though, which is why I found the following quotes to be inspiring, funny, and thought-provoking—just what I needed for more motivation. I share them with you in hopes that you too will be inspired to get your hands dirty in the soil and make beautiful things grow.

These quotes will also reveal just how many great artists, writers, thinkers, and leaders have relied on gardens throughout history for calmness, inspiration, clarity of thought, and a sense of grounding and belonging. The following selection of quotes articulates how different people feel about plants and gardening, and you will likely find a quote (or two) that reflects your own feelings perfectly.

Gardens have always helped humans to feel and do better in the world—there's something deeply primal about cultivating the soil—and your garden can do the same for you.

Gardening Quotes by Authors and Poets

H. Jackson Brown, Jr.: Remember that children, marriages, and flower gardens reflect the kind of care they get.

Voltaire: We must cultivate our own garden. When man was put in the garden of Eden he was put there so that he should work, which proves that man was not born to rest.

Alfred Austin: The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul.

Rudyard Kipling: Gardens are not made by singing "Oh, how beautiful," and sitting in the shade.

May Sarton: Everything that slows us down and forces patience, everything that sets us back into the slow circles of nature, is a help. Gardening is an instrument of grace.

Zora Neale Hurston: Trees and plants always look like the people they live with, somehow.

Michael Pollan: The garden suggests there might be a place where we can meet nature halfway.

Alfred Austin: There is no gardening without humility. Nature is constantly sending even its oldest scholars to the bottom of the class for some egregious blunder.

Alice Sebold: I like gardening—it's a place where I find myself when I need to lose myself.

Minnie Aumonier: When the world wearies and society fails to satisfy, there is always the garden.

Edna Ferber: But always, to her, red and green cabbages were to be jade and burgundy, chrysoprase and porphyry. Life has no weapons against a woman like that.

Michael Pollan: The single greatest lesson the garden teaches is that our relationship to the planet need not be zero-sum, and that as long as the sun still shines and people still can plan and plant, think and do, we can, if we bother to try, find ways to provide for ourselves without diminishing the world.

Ella Wheeler Wilcox: A weed is but an unloved flower.

George Eliot: It will never rain roses: when we want to have more roses we must plant more trees.

Gardening Quotes by Horticulturists and Botanists

Liberty Hyde Bailey: A garden requires patient labor and attention. Plants do not grow merely to satisfy ambitions or to fulfill good intentions. They thrive because someone expended effort on them.

Gertrude Jekyll: A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all it teaches entire trust.

Carl Linnaeus: If a tree dies, plant another in its place.

Allan Armitage: Gardening simply does not allow one to be mentally old, because too many hopes and dreams are yet to be realized.

Liberty Hyde Bailey: A person cannot love a plant after he has pruned it, then he has either done a poor job or is devoid of emotion.

Gertrude Jekyll: The love of gardening is a seed once sown that never dies.

Quotes by Pro Gardeners and Environmentalists

Joel Salatin: The first supermarket supposedly appeared on the American landscape in 1946. That is not very long ago. Until then, where was all the food? Dear folks, the food was in homes, gardens, local fields, and forests. It was near kitchens, near tables, near bedsides. It was in the pantry, the cellar, the backyard.

Wendell Berry: Odd as I am sure it will appear to some, I can think of no better form of personal involvement in the cure of the environment than that of gardening. A person who is growing a garden, if he is growing it organically, is improving a piece of the world. He is producing something to eat, which makes him somewhat independent of the grocery business, but he is also enlarging, for himself, the meaning of food and the pleasure of eating.

Ruth Stout: I love spring anywhere, but if I could choose I would always greet it in a garden.

Russell Page: If you wish to make anything grow, you must understand it, and understand it in a very real sense. "Green fingers" are a fact, and a mystery only to the unpracticed. But green fingers are the extensions of a verdant heart.

Luther Burbank: Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food, and medicine for the soul.

Planting Inspiration: Preparing Your Mindset

Success in gardening requires more than just green thumbs and a knowledge of plants. It also requires having the right attitude and an appreciation for how things grow. Here are some short vegetable garden quotes to encourage a positive mindset:

gardening quotes

“There are no gardening mistakes, only experiments. ” — Janet Kilburn Phillips

Remember, when it comes to gardening, there are no failures, only learning opportunities. Each planting experience is a chance for exploration and discovery, where “mistakes” merely become valuable lessons and experiments.

“You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep spring from coming.” – Pablo Neruda

This unique garden quote is a gentle reminder that there are some things in life and nature that cannot be stopped or controlled. It means no matter how much effort you put into trying to control everything around and within your garden, natural cycles like the inevitable changing of seasons will continue regardless. 1

“To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” – Audrey Hepburn

Even in difficult times, looking forward to what the future may bring can help any grower keep hope alive. It reminds us that planting a garden is symbolic of optimism and belief in something better ahead.

“The greatest oak was once a little nut that held its ground.” – Unknown

Anything can grow into something great with time and effort. No matter where we come from or how small our beginnings may seemingly be, when we have unwavering faith in ourselves, exude patience, and keep working hard, it is possible to achieve any dream. Remember, even the most experienced gardeners today began as novices once upon a time.

gardens quotes

“Your mind is a garden. Your thoughts are the seeds. You can grow flowers or you can grow weeds.” – Unknown

Your thoughts have the power to shape your life and your garden. If you plant positive, constructive seeds of thought in your mind’s garden, they will grow into beautiful flowers that fill each day with positivity and joy.

The Art Of Waiting: Vegetable Garden Quotes To Encourage Patience

Good things come to those who wait. In gardening and in life, patience holds a special place. These gardening quotes below capture the essence of patience, reminding us not only of its rarity but of its importance in our journeys.

garden quotes short

“ Work well and wait; Impatience spoils the sowing; Don’t dig up seeds to see if they are growing.” – Arthur Guiterman

Patience is key in the journey of growth and development. There are no shortcuts in gardening. Any humble grower will agree you must put in the work and wait for results. Just as seeds require time and nurturing to grow in your backyard soil, personal growth also takes time to mature. Timing is important, and rushing without proper consideration can undermine your success and hinder the growth of your garden vegetables.

“ If you would know strength and patience, welcome the company of trees.” – Hal Borland

Trees are strong and resilient. They have endured the test of time with patience despite all that nature throws at them. If trees could talk, I’m certain they would say nature and its elements haven’t been easy. Yet, they endured. By simply being around these remarkably stoic beings, we can learn from their example to find our own inner strength and resilience in life’s most challenging moments. 2

short inspirational garden quotes

“ Patience is power; with time and patience, the mulberry leaf becomes silk.” – A Chinese Proverb

Patience is a powerful thing. Taking the time to wait and be patient allows even ordinary things, like mulberry leaves, to become something truly extraordinary – in this case, silk.

“ A garden requires patient labor and attention. Plants do not grow merely to satisfy ambitions or to fulfill good intentions. They thrive because someone expended effort on them. ” – Liberty Hyde Bailey

Creating and maintaining a flourishing garden demands hard work, dedication, and ongoing care. Tasks like tilling, weeding, watering, and pruning are essential. And while these essential actions require time and effort, the rewards of a beautiful and healthy garden are truly gratifying and fulfilling.

“ Everything that slows us down and forces patience, everything that sets us back into the slow circles of nature, is a help. Gardening is an instrument of grace.” – May Sarton

The humble art of gardening soothes the soul. Patience is cultivated as plants grow gradually, offering amazingly delicious rewards over time. Through gardening, we find inner peace and the value of steady progress.

Harvesting Wisdom: Learning From Gardening Mistakes

Learning is essential in order to develop our knowledge, abilities, and skills. When we study or experience something new, we are able to gain insights that can be applied not just in the garden but throughout life. Here are gardening quotes that highlight the essential role and joy of continuous learning in our journey as growers.

best gardening quotes

“Gardening is learning, learning, learning. That’s the fun of them. You’re always learning.” –Helen Mirren

As you gain skills in gardening, there can be great satisfaction from seeing your garden flourish over time. Learning keeps things interesting because each season brings new challenges as well as successes that help one become even better at creating their own garden oasis.

“The garden suggests there might be a place where we can meet nature halfway.” — Michael Pollan

This is one of my favorite garden quotes. Working with nature instead of against it provides tremendous humility and realizes fantastic dreams. Gardens provide a beautiful setting for humans to interact with and learn about nature, deepening our understanding of the natural world that exists all around us. Gardens encourage appreciation and respect, offering educational opportunities while providing enjoyment in the outdoors. 3

“A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all, it teaches entire trust.” — Gertrude Jekyll

Gardening teaches valuable qualities like patience, care, industry, thriftiness, and trust, both in ourselves and in nature. These lessons extend beyond horticulture and are applicable to life itself.

funny garden quotes

“There is no gardening without humility. Nature is constantly sending even its oldest scholars to the bottom of the class for some egregious blunder.” — Alfred Austin

Through the practice of gardening, nature humbles even the most experienced of growers. Mistakes teach valuable lessons, reminding us of our place within its grand design. To develop our green thumbs, we must humbly learn from our experiences and perceived setbacks while accepting and respecting nature’s teachings.

Blooming Confidence: Quotes For Overcoming Challenges

Gardening is not a perfect science, but experienced backyard growers understand that failure can be part of their learning to take better care of their gardens. Here are several unique quotes offering personal perspectives on conquering the challenges that come with the subtle art of gardening.

garden quotes inspirational

“The biggest obstacle to good gardening is the desire to know the answers and not the questions.” -Monty Don

Gardening requires us to think critically and ask the right questions in order to determine which approach is best. Without understanding the underlying issue – such as soil quality, climate conditions, or plant disease – it can be difficult for growers to achieve and sustain success.

“Gardening simply does not allow one to be mentally old, because too many hopes and dreams are yet to be realized.” – Liberty Hyde Bailey

Gardening can bring youthful vigor and curiosity to the body and the mind. No matter how old one is, tending to flowers, harvesting vegetables, and caring for other plants requires patience and hard work, which cultivates vital life lessons such as resilience in the face of challenging conditions.

Growing Together: Inspirational Garden Quotes On The Community Aspect

Here’s a collection of quotes about gardening that celebrate the amazing community aspect of gardening. These special words of wisdom remind us of the joy and connection that arise when we come together, united by our love for plants and the natural world.

home garden quotes

“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they shall never sit.” — Greek Proverb

Planting trees is symbolic of building something with an enduring impact. When men plant trees, they are investing in their communities and ensuring a better environment for those who will come after them.

“All gardeners know better than other gardeners.” -Chinese Proverb

While other gardeners may know more than others in certain areas, no single grower knows everything there is about the practice. That’s because gardening is always evolving with the times. However, growers can and should learn from each other’s experiences. There is much wisdom in understanding various perspectives and approaches and how these experiences can relate to you.

beautiful garden quotes

“Remember that children, marriages, and flower gardens reflect the kind of care they get.” – H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

Just as each generation should nurture subsequent generations, gardeners should devote the necessary time and energy to caring for their backyard garden. When these important tasks are neglected or done poorly, it will be reflected in how each of them turns out.

Planting With Purpose: Quotes To Guide Your Planting Decisions

Although things may not always go according to plan, with unpredictable weather, an unintended pest infestation, or an unexpected late frost, as growers, everything we do is for a particular reason. Here are a few quotes providing purpose and resilience in our labor of love, even when things may not always go as expected.

short vegetable garden quotes

“Garden as though you will live forever.” – William Kent

When gardening, it’s important to plan ahead and think about the long-term consequences of your plantings. Pay special attention to choosing plants for their hardiness, disease and pest resistance, minimal maintenance requirements, or other considerations that can help your green friends thrive even in harsh growing conditions.

“I don’t like formal gardens. I like wild nature. It’s just the wilderness instinct in me, I guess.” – Walt Disney

When you grow plants, carefully evaluate what it is that you want to grow. Making these decisions allows you to have a clear focus on the type of plant that best fits your preferences and lifestyle, whether it’s flowers, vegetables, or trees.

Nature’s Humor: Garden Quotes That Will Make You Smile

Gardening is not only a source of immense pleasure but also a treasure trove of laughable experiences. I gathered quotes about gardening that are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. These delightful quotes capture the humorous side of nurturing plants, adding an extra dose of joy and fun to the growing process.

famous garden quotes

“Gardening is cheaper than therapy. Until your spouse adds up the receipts.” – Unknown

“Money can’t buy happiness. But it can buy plants, and that’s the same thing” – Unknown

“I’m so excited about gardening, I wet my plants!” – Unknown

“I’m not really a control freak, but can I show you the right way to prune that?” – Unknown

“Plant and your spouse plants with you; weed and you weed alone.” ~ Jean Jacques Rousseau

“You know you’re a gardener when you’re happy to devote three months of your life growing tomatoes to save $1.27.” – Unknown

vegetable garden quotes

Remember, as growers, we need to understand to roll with the punches sometimes. Not everything is going to run perfectly despite our best efforts. Let’s decide not to take ourselves too seriously. Sure, I understand it can be discouraging when deer make a midnight raid on your cabbage patch or an early frost results in dead foliage. But it’s all part of the experience. And it’s the experience of growing that pushes us to persevere.

I’ve always felt like having a garden is like having a good and loyal friend. You know, the endearing companion who stands by you no matter what, through thick and thin. Growing plants is more than just a hobby; it can provide us with emotional connection and communal support.

Gardening offers a direct connection to our roots, the Earth, and our very souls. It involves planting, caring for, and harvesting plants. The re-emergence of colors and scents with each passing season is the simple reminders and demonstrations that show us how things grow and renew. But more than that, gardening can give us inspiration too.

By stepping outside into your garden space, we not only connect with nature but grow in wisdom and understanding about why some things flourish while others struggle for survival. This knowledge translates to helping us better understand ourselves and offers an opportunity for us to leave a piece of ourselves within the green space we’ve created. Nothing could be more exceptional.

What garden quotes do you live by? Maybe it’s one in this article or something else entirely. List your favorite quote in the comments below and tell us how it motivates and inspires you as a humble gardener!

There are some excellent garden quotes. Several of my favorites are: “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” – Audrey Hepburn “The love of gardening is a seed once sown that never dies.” – Gertrude Jekyll “There are never gardening mistakes, only experiments.” – Unknown

Perhaps at its most foundational level, a garden symbolizes life, death, and rebirth. Of course, this question is subjective to the individual who is asking it. A garden could be colorful or abundant with various flowers and vegetables. Likewise, it may symbolize beauty and renewal in spring and resilience in winter. Yet another way one can symbolize a garden is sustainability, community, and fun, as it helps bring people closer together.

There are some wonderful quotes about plants, including: “I’ve always felt that having a garden is like having a good and loyal friend.” – C.Z Guest “Gardening always has been an art, essentially.” – Robert Irwin “Every flower must grow through dirt.” – Lauie Jean Sennott

Some excellent nature quotes are: “Colors are the smiles of nature.” – Leigh Hunt “If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.” – Vincent van Gogh “Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson “Despite the gardener’s best intentions, nature will improvise.” – Michael P. Garofalo

Easy Ideas to Get Inspired by Nature

Your love and appreciation for gardening can go above and beyond quotes. There are simple and innovative ways to include Mother Nature in your everyday life. Take your home decor, for example—regardless of your style, you may find inspiration from the outdoors by using color palettes inspired by nature , from sage green touches for an airy, calming vibe, to flawless decor pairings using brown shades and watery blues, or eclectic pink and red hues for a 70s fair. Add foliage and floral patterns to soft furnishings and accents.

Speaking about flowers , while you can rely on them to create stunning centerpieces for every occasion , flowers have a special symbolism and may uplift your mood or send a subtle message of your intentions to their recipients. To feel strength, resilience, and well-being in your home, try adding French marigolds , dandelions, or bright carnations around strategic spaces where you can see them first thing in the morning. For love or passion, red or pink roses will create the perfect atmosphere, whether you’re single or taken. If you need calm and peace, neutral-colored chrysanthemums or lilies may give you a sense of tranquility when added to clean, minimalist rooms.

171 inspirational gardening quotes and sayings.

An extensive list of inspirational quotes about gardening and for gardeners, complete with attribution to the original author of the quotes.

Everyone needs inspiration once in a while. After all, inspiration is the fuel to creativity and passion! I learned this the hard way, but let me explain. According to  research , exposure to nature and greenery is great for our health and mental wellbeing. But a majority of us live hectic 9-5 lives where we hardly find the time to breathe. Where's the time to go out and reconnect with nature? Well, if that's your question, how about bringing nature home through gardening?

Although my parents are avid gardeners, I couldn't understand what motivated them to dig through the soil and plant flowers, fruits, and vegetables when everything is readily available in stores. I would often question their inspiration and request them to share their garden sayings and wisdom. When I thought I felt inspired enough, I dove straight for the opportunity and  planted some tomatoes , marigolds, and hot peppers. I didn't expect them to grow, but I was glad I spent some time reconnecting with nature, which was  good for my health and mental wellbeing . My excitement hit the roof when some things I planted grew!

60 Thought-Provoking Garden Quotes To Nurture Your Love of the Outdoors

Table of Contents

There are plenty of reasons to love gardens . For one, it’s always beneficial to look at something green. Whenever you’re stressed, just lay your sights on a bunch of peonies or Daylilies. That will surely brighten your day in no time. It’s also a great excuse to go outdoors. Thinking about eating healthier? Plant some tomatoes, carrots, kale, avocadoes, or garlic right on your backyard.

How To Start a Garden

garden tour quotes

Ever dreamed of having your own clusters of Cleomes, Snapdragons, or lavender? Then you better be ready to get down and dirty – literally.

One of the first things to consider is what type of garden you want . Do you want a flower, fruit, or herb garden? This is a vital step because you’ll need to think about where to place your future Eden. Plants in general need about 6-8 hours of sunlight every day. Observe and see which spot will be ideal. If you live in an apartment complex, you might want to consider container gardening instead.

Next, make sure to clear the ground so your plants can breathe once they start sprouting. Use compost and fertilizer to improve the soil. Follow it up with a little bit of tilling and some digging (for creating flower beds). After that, it’s time to pick your plants. This should be easy (from step one).

The trick is to start small so you can figure it out slowly as you go along.

Oldest Gardens in the World

garden tour quotes

If you’re a green thumb at heart, then traveling the world wouldn’t be complete without a visit to a few of the world’s oldest gardens .

On top of that list should be Orto Botanico di Padova. Located in Italy, it’s considered as the oldest academic garden, founded in 1545. Don’t forget the Garden of Versailles, which took 40 years and numerous landscape architects to develop. For something more adventurous, visit ‘The Lost Gardens of Heligan’. Boasting of Europe’s only Pineapple Pit, it’s located in the picturesque Cornish fishing village of Mevagissey and has been in existence since the 18th century.

For hundreds of years, persons all over the world from all walks of life have wanted to create gardens. It didn’t matter what was in them: towering trees, flowering shrubs, or plump vegetables – what mattered was the indescribable feeling of reward. Once you see the first signs of life, those small green sprouts fighting for life from the soil you tilled yourself, there’s nothing quite like it.

Whether you have a green thumb or not, you will still love these garden quotes and sayings.

I collected a lot of garden quotes for an art project and got a bit obsessed with Minnie Aumonier. She was actually born 2 June 1865 and despite her French surname was English (a descendant of French Huguenots). Minnie attended the West London School of Art in 1886. She wrote and illustrated three little books of garden poetry between 1920 and the mid 1930s. She sold water colours and also created greeting cards. Two of Minnie’s greeting cards were reprinted by the Medici Society in the 1980s and those are the verses she is best known for today: ~ When the world wearies and society ceases to satisfy, there is always the garden. ~ There is always music among the trees in the garden, but our hearts must be very quiet to hear it. I have a Facebook page, ‘M. Aumonier – Minnie’ where I have shared all of her books, paintings, cards, and music I have managed to find. This year marked the seventieth anniversary of Minnie’s death on 11 August 1952, so her works are now in the public domain, and I’m hoping to make her charming garden poems better known.

30. To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow. – Audrey Hepburn

“No occupation is so delightful to me as the culture of Earth, and no culture comparable to that of the garden.” – Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson explains the culture of gardening as the most relaxing and enjoyable activity for many of us.

“Earth laughs in flowers”. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Flowers blooming garden

This is one of the most beautiful quotes describing gardening. This unique impersonation likens Earth’s laugh with a full field of flowers. This is how Earth smiles to us by offering multiple natural colors.

“The best place to find God is in a garden. You can dig for him there.” – George Bernard Shaw

Where else to rest, gather yourself, and talk to the divinity than in Its beautiful creation?

“Ol’ man Simon planted a diamond. Grew himself a garden the likes of none. Sprouts all growin’ comin’ up glowin’ Fruit of jewels all shinin’ in the sun. Colors of the rainbow. See the sun and the rain grow sapphires and rubies on ivory vines, Grapes of jade, just ripenin’ in the shade, just ready for the squeezin’ into green jade wine.” – Shel Silverstein

This quote reminds people of how gardening is pure magic. From a little, simple seed, can grow beautiful diamonds (“flowers”, sapphires and rubies), “fruits”, beautifully embraced by sun and drops of rain.

“We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses”. – Abraham Lincoln

This is the pure perspective in everything, right? Instead of complaining about something that disturbs you, such as the rose thorns, you’d better see the beauty of it. Those thorns defend the mesmerizing rose bushes.

“All gardeners know better than other gardeners.” – Chinese Proverb

Each parent knows their child better than anybody else. Gardeners have their gardening method and take care of their “green kids”. Never disagree, but learn from them.

“If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.” – Cicero

There are multiple ways to interpret this saying. However, from my perspective, books and a garden full of colors are both something to feed your mind and soul. Learn from books, love the plants, and load your soul with these divine treasures.

“I don’t like formal gardens. I like wild nature. It’s just the wilderness instinct in me, I guess.” – Walt Disney

Some might enjoy the perfectly lined up plants and gardens, while others prefer wildness. However, you can create your wild garden and let your imagination free.

“Gardening is how I relax. It’s another form of creating and playing with colors.” – Oscar de la Renta

Man grandaughter gardening backyard garden

One of the most admirable designers worldwide, Oscar de la Renta compares his fashion creation with gardening. Both are a matter of creativity, dreaming, and relaxation, right?

“Gardens are not made by singing ‘Oh, how beautiful,’ and sitting in the shade.” – Rudyard Kipling

Don’t just sit and observe a beautiful garden from the faraway. Enjoy the perfume of flowers, help nature grow, sit in the middle of it, and breathe.

“It will never rain roses: when we want to have more roses we must plant more trees.” – George Eliot

Don’t expect life to be full of pinky stuff, when you can bring pinkiness into your daily life so easy. At the proper level of the word, plant more pink and green, and then your life will be full color.

“God Almighty first planted a garden. And indeed, it is the purest of human pleasures.” – Francis Bacon

Going back to God’s creation, God first created the sky, earth, and nature. So how can you be closer to divinity than walking and enjoying its first creation?

“My garden is my most beautiful masterpiece”. – Claude Monet

The French Painter considers his garden the masterpiece of his life, despite all the art he has created. What better way to eulogize nature than putting all your creative skills in it?

“Gardening is not a rational act.” – Margaret Atwood

One of the most famous contemporary authors, Margaret Atwood, considers gardening as not a rational act. Her saying makes you think that gardening is truly spiritual, a passion.

“Kiss of the sun for pardon. Song of the birds for mirth. You’re closer to God’s heart in a garden than anyplace else on earth.” –Dorothy Frances Gurney

Every time you feel blue or need some hope, find your inner self in nature. Simple elements like the kiss of the sun, the birds’ singing, or a colorful garden can “heal” many wounds.

“Love is like a beautiful flower which I may not touch, but whose fragrance makes the garden a place of delight just the same.” –Helen Keller

What better way to compare the unique spirit of love but with the sweet fragrance and the colorful vibe of a rich garden?

“Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead.” – Oscar Wilde

What a beautiful metaphor, isn’t it? What would life be without love, which is the most precious value in life? Nothing but a garden without sun and drops of rain.

“Gardening is learning, learning, learning. That’s the fun of them. You’re always learning.” – Helen Mirren

Considering there are millions of plants and insects in this world, each of them with their particularities, gardening also means a lot of learning.

“To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” – Audrey Hepburn

Iconic Audrey Hepburn compared gardening with believing in tomorrow. Believe that the little seed you are planting will be tomorrow a beautiful plant, or it will blossom overnight.

“If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.” – Vincent van Gogh

If van Gogh himself said these words, nobody could not deny them. Every little plant, every little place in nature is beauty, miracle, life.”

“Gardening is a humbling experience.” – Martha Stewart

For some might not be a big deal, but gardening is a whole experience. More humble than other adventures, but still, you learn a lot. You cry, you smile, you fail, and then give life again.

“Nature will bear the closest inspection. She invites us to lay our eye level with her smallest leaf, and take an insect view of its plain.” -Henry David Thoreau

This is so true. Nature allows you to know it from a very close point of view. It always invites you to admire its beauty, without asking anything in return, but love.

“Clarity is the most important thing. I can compare clarity to pruning in gardening. You know, you need to be clear. If you are not clear, nothing is going to happen. You have to be clear. Then you have to be confident about your vision. And after that, you just have to put a lot of work in.” – Diane von Furstenberg

One of the human communication skills is compared to the act of removing old branches or stems from the garden. It’s like removing all the unnecessary words and expressions from your usual language to make yourself more accurate in speaking. What a beautiful comparison, isn’t it?

“Almost every person, from childhood, has been touched by the untamed beauty of wildflowers”. – Lady Bird Johnson

This quote highlights the omnipresence of nature, with its wild fauna and flora in your lives. It’s almost impossible not to enjoy from childhood to senior age the beauty of it.

“There is nothing pleasanter than spading when the ground is soft and damp.” – John Steinbeck

There is nothing more satisfying for a gardener than working the ground when it is smooth, perfectly damp, and soft. It’s like the ground welcomes you to work and care for it.

“Look deep into nature, and you will understand everything better.” – Albert Einstein

Our society, the rules of it, are strongly connected to nature. It’s like the Fibonacci sequence, so present in every tree or flower’s body. Understanding nature is a better perspective over the society we live in.

“Flowers are restful to look at. They have neither emotions nor conflicts.“ – Sigmund Freud

If you find yourself sad, stressed, and you are looking for a moment of meditation, look at nature. Every single piece of it has no bad emotions to share, but peace. Nature is the perfect way and place to reconnect with yourself and to think of nothing else but you.

“One of the most tragic things I know about human nature is that all of us tend to put off living. We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon instead of enjoying the roses that are blooming outside our windows today.” – Dale Carnegie

I personally see this quote as a motivational statement, a hint for living. It is useless to permanently dream about something big when you have so much to enjoy every day. Dale Carnegie compares people’s big hopes with a huge garden of roses they only dream about. Why not enjoy what you already have, like the roses that are blooming every day in front of you, and be thankful for the present moments.

“Everything that slows us down and forces patience, everything that sets us back into the slow circles of nature, is a help. Gardening is an instrument of grace.” May Sarton

In daily life, people should stop rushing and sit for a moment to enjoy what they have. This is why May Starton considers gardening the perfect time for resting, slowing down the daily habits’ chaotic rhythm, and thank nature for this little help.

“To see a world in a grain of sand and heaven in a wildflower / Hold infinity in the palms of your hand and eternity in an hour.” – William Blake

How beautiful are these lyrics? A small grain of sand can mean the world for some, while the flowers express the beauty of heaven.

“Every time I imagine a garden in an architectural setting, it turns into a magical place. I think of gardens I have seen, that I believe I have seen, that I long to see, surrounded by simple walls, columns, arcades, or the facades of buildings – sheltered places of great intimacy where I want to stay for a long time.” – Peter Zumthor

A garden is not only the place where you are admiring the beautiful nature but also a way to reconnect with your intimacy. As Peter Zumthor declares, it would be a pity just to sit in a garden and think about the daily problems and not to enjoy the intimacy of this place.

Why is Gardening Therapeutic?

Planting petunia

Based on the inspirational garden quotes above, it’s interesting to mention what makes people find gardening the best therapy. For those of you who never tried this relaxing activity, these reasons might be the starting point for a new passion. On the other hand, already passionate ones might find themselves in the following explanations:

Gardening offers people a sense of responsibility

From the very beginning of planting a seed to the final flowers, trees, or fruits, the act of having to care for plants is a way of assuming responsibility. Learn how to care for them, use different techniques, permanently watch them grow, and, finally, appreciate nature much more than before.

Gardening makes people nurturers

It does not matter the age when you start gardening, either if you are male or female, child, or senior. The simple act of gardening and taking care of plants underlines your need to be nurturers.

Gardening makes people connect with other living things

The act of gardening is a gentle reminder for each person that people are strongly connected to nature. Humans are not alone and unique in this universe, but form a union with nature.

Gardening is a therapeutic way to treat depression

Gardening is beneficial and self-absorbent of depression symptoms. Once you focus on the great outdoors, you get the courage to be less insular and fight against sadness.

Gardening develops collective skills

It is studied that group gardening is a soft, gradual way to bring people together and help them escape prison mental issues. This type of therapy centers on collective and aspirations skills rather than teaching individual skill development.

Gardening helps people relax and let go of negative emotions

Inspecting beets

Gardening is for many people a great way to escape the daily problems. Furthermore, it enables you to escape from other people. As contradictory as it may sound with the previous point, well, sometimes you need to be alone and reconnect with the real you.

When planting, you don’t have to worry about deadlines, meetings, or asking for your colleagues’ help.

Gardening releases happy hormones

To remind you that gardening is an excellent way to exercise and spend time outdoors might be redundant and kind of obvious. However, I thought it’s important to remind you how good you feel after some workout.

The same happens with the habit of gardening. It is beneficial for the body, but also for your mind. While planting, like exercising, your body releases dopamine and serotonin, the main hormones which bring us a happy feeling.

Gardening teaches and reminds people to live the present moment

As long as you concentrate on the present moments, you can fight against anxiety and worry no more about the future. Once you only focus on the present, you can calm the anxious mind and lift your mood.

As such, the best advice when you are in a garden is to pause for a few moments and allow yourself to feel all the emotions and senses.

Get some help to go through difficult emotions

Gardening reminds you of the cycle of life. Also, it helps you work through difficult emotions, such as grief. What better way to recognize all the life stages than in a garden? From the symbolic regeneration to the spring blossoms, gardens are the embodiment of life.

Vent anger and aggression

One of the therapeutic benefits of gardening is the power of unleashing all the anger you have accumulated. It is also a great moment to fight against aggression and provide the opportunity to nurture.

Gardening is easy

Last but not least, let’s say the hobby of gardening does not imply too much information at the first stages. It is such a pleasant habit, that makes us feel relaxed, healed, less anxious, more close to nature.

Moreover, you don’t need a wide planting area to be happy and enjoy the pleasure of planting.

Both the 31 inspirational garden quotes and the therapeutic reasons to start gardening are statements of the benefits that nature brings in your lives. Hope you are related to these ideas, or you will start thinking more about investing your time in gardening.

Featured Gardens Stroll Through a Woodland Garden 7712 Harmony Ct., Wichita, 67209

The cabin style home, sounds of running water and the cool shade of 64 trees on this one-acre lot create a “Mountain Hideaway on the Plains”. A large bronze elk strikes a regal pose to greet you as you enter the garden, while nearby, several bronze deer statues play in the woodland garden. From the back patio enjoy the containers full of colorful annuals. A weeping white pine and Great Blue Heron statue watch over a small babbling brook leading to a koi pond with water lilies. Go for a walk down one of the flagstone pathways, where you’ll discover a variety of Hostas, a Cedar of Lebanon tree, pecan trees, aromatic Eastern Red Cedars, and all this garden has to offer.

Growing a Neighborhood Garden 802 Amidon, Wichita, 67203 (corner of Murdock & Amidon)

Riverside Garden is a Community Garden where individuals can rent a space to grow any plants they choose. This property spans two city lots at the corner of Murdock and Amidon, and has been this garden’s home for only two years. It is a great sunny place for the flowers and vegetables that are planted each year in the more than 30 raised and in-ground beds. You may find large squash, tomatillos, 8-foot tall okra stalks, a plentiful variety of tomatoes, peppers, sweet potatoes, rainbow Swiss chard, giant zinnias, fragrant basil, and bee-filled cucumber beds. To support the idea of community, there is a large, covered pergola with seating, used for neighborly “Coffee & Dirt” get-togethers, as well educational meetings or a place to sit in the rain and enjoy the garden.

Cottage Garden with a Southwest Flair 209 N. Battin, Wichita, 67208

A cozy cottage feel is the best way to describe this one-third acre property. There are many shade and sun gardens nestled around the lot, along with beautifully colored southwest pottery. The layout of flowers and shrubs in the beds is intentionally carefree - a clump of coneflowers here, a patch of daylilies there. As you wander the property you sense the naturalness of the plan and the design skills of the planner. Toward the back of the yard, there is a delightful she shed, two magnolia trees nearby, and a beautiful pollinator garden full of Shasta daisies, yarrow, bee balm, bird houses, and cheerful pieces of art.

Antiques Garden show 3356 E. Bellaire St., Wichita, 67218

Cultivating a pollinator and bird friendly habitat is the number one priority in this garden. This pesticide-free garden encourages a healthy pollinator population, including its very own beehive. In addition to hearing the hum of insects and chirping of birds, there is a quirky collection of antiques on display. Unique planters and handmade stepping stones are tucked into every corner along the path. There are more than a dozen fun water features to delight you while you meander through the garden. Be sure to look for the collection of over 200 caladiums that are starting to emerge.

Levels of Garden Beauty 7061 S. Mark Twain, Derby, 67037

Throughout this one acre landscape you will enjoy a blend of garden styles that progress from intentionally cultivated to natural wilderness. This certified wildlife habitat includes rock walls which create a sunken landscape, and separate the garden into tiers. Every level will give you plenty of inspiration for your own garden. As you step off the back patio of the home, a water feature surrounded by plants awaits. A large collection of Hostas can be found throughout the garden, but out of necessity, many deer resistant plants are utilized too. A wooded area across the back of the property connects to the Arkansas River. A carefully curated collection of antiques blends seamlessly throughout every level of this property, perfectly tying it all together.

Plant Collector’s Paradise 1332 N. Dry Brook Ct., Derby, 67037

When you can’t decide what plant is your favorite, you get one of everything! From columbine and hydrangeas to coneflowers and ornamental grasses, this garden has it all. A variety of planting conditions from full sun to full shade help these plant collectors find the perfect spot for any new plant they add to their collection. To obtain three seasons of color and encourage pollination, vegetables are planted side by side with flowers. Fairy gardens, gazing balls and other wonderful pieces of garden art collected over the last four decades add to the charm and will delight your eyes. For ultimate inspiration, enjoy the relaxing sound of the water feature and watch the swimming fish.
