Updated: 25th September 2023

In a year where it seems that prejudices are returning, right-wing governments are rolling back previous protections, and debates about people’s very existence have led the headlines, travelling as a member of the LGBTQ+ community continues to bring its own additional considerations and concerns. Thankfully, there are still many gay-friendly destinations in Europe , and even in countries which might have shifted their national policies, you can still find enclaves of acceptance, tolerance and celebration.

Still, we aren’t all one vast homogeneous group with the same needs or worries, and defining a gay-friendly destination isn’t as easy as picking the place with the largest pride party. For some gay travellers, it’s more about being able to book a double room with their partner or hold hands without the fear of prejudice or attack, while others might be seeking a non-stop party scene. Mr Hudson, an agency that specialises in luxury designed gay vacations , believes that gay-friendly also extends well beyond clubs and community and builds its trips around the best in culture, classy hotels, and stylish activities. But no matter what your personal travel style, being informed will ensure a smooth and safe trip.

Well-researched resources such as ILGA’s Rainbow Europe index, which ranks countries based on various factors, including equality, hate crimes, and legal recognition, are helpful tools when deciding where to travel – I’ve included their relevant scores below – but these top-level national overviews can miss the nuance at the city level, where pockets of respect exist in nations which are otherwise (legally) lagging in protections and acceptance.

So, with EuroPride wrapped up for another year (thanks for hosting, Malta!) and attention turning to next year’s travels, here are – in no particular order – some of my favourite European gay-friendly cities and beach destinations .

 8 of Europe’s Most Gay-Friendly Cities & Destinations

Mykonos, Greece

EuroPride 2024 will be hosted by Greece in Thessaloniki between June 21st – 29th Pride dates: XLSIOR Summer Gay Festival 22nd – 28th August 2024 Rainbow Europe ranking 2023: Greece 57% (13th in Europe)

For close to 50 years – a trend led by Jackie Onassis, an original travel influencer, if you will – Mykonos has been regarded as one of Europe’s most gay-friendly destinations for those seeking sun, sea, sand and some. Sure, in 2024, the spotlight might be turned on Greece’s second city of Thessaloniki as it hosts EuroPride, but with just a one-hour flight – or full-day ferry – linking Thessaloniki with the Cyclades island of Mykonos, combining the two into a great Greek getaway is a fantastic idea.

Thanks to pretty much everywhere on the island being gay-friendly, picking where to stay, eat and drink requires no major planning. Planning a group trip of parties and pool time? Book yourself into one of the many spacious villas in Mykonos Town (Chora) or around Super Paradise Beach, two of the most happening gay-friendly areas. Or, for a more romantic retreat for two, settle into the sea-facing Saint John Villas & Spa. For lazy days on the sand, set your sights on the beaches of Paradise, Elia, or naturist-friendly Paraga. By night, Lola, at54 and JackieO’ (plus its sister beach club) are great places to enjoy a night out.

Madrid, the Spanish capital, is one of Europe's most gay-friendly destinations

Madrid, Spain

Pride dates: 25th June – 7th July 2024 (Main parade, 6th July) Rainbow Europe ranking 2023: Spain 74% (4th in Europe)

In Misterb&b’s post-pandemic travel survey , Spain was voted the number one gay European destination – and that’s certainly not just because of the country’s bewitching beaches, friendly first-class nightlife, and culture-laden cities. The nation’s (for now) left-leaning political coalition has focused on an inclusive agenda, and with these topics often leading newsrooms in the country – and beyond in the case of the Women’s World Cup – the shift from homophobic dictator to open liberal society has been vast in the last 50 years.

Barcelona, Stiges and the Canary Islands are some of the most gay-friendly destinations in Europe, but it’s Spain’s capital city, Madrid – host of Europe’s largest pride – where I feel most comfortable. There are pockets of the city where the scene is most compounded, such as the neighbourhood of Chueca, but with an estimated half a million LBGT+ people living in Madrid, you’ll find acceptance and gay-friendly spaces beyond one specific district. There are some gorgeous gay-friendly hotels, such as Axel with its rooftop pool, and an abundance of gay bars, clubs, drag performances and safe spaces in Chueca. Plus, Madrid is one of the best city breaks in Spain year-round thanks to its array of incredible museums (spare at least half a day for the Prado), monuments, leafy parks and sun-soaked plazas.

Colourful Copenhagen has it's fair share of Rainbow credentials

Copenhagen, Denmark

Pride dates: 10th August – 18th August 2024 (Main parade, 6th July) Rainbow Europe ranking 2023: Denmark 76% (3rd in Europe)

All of the Nordic capital cities are considered gay-friendly European cities; even tiny Torshavn in the far-flung Faroe Islands has an annual Pride and Minority Film Festival. But Copenhagen is my Scandinavian pick – even if Sweden brags the region’s biggest pride – as it’s not just a super welcoming and friendly city with LBTQ+ credentials to match, but also forward-thinking in terms of its culture, design and art, meaning a weekend in Copenhagen is always a good idea.

A menu in Centralhjørnet, the oldest gay bar in the city

Denmark was the first country in the world to grant legal recognition to same-sex unions back in 1989, a few years after the launch of Copenhagen’s LGBTQ Film Festival. The city is also home to one of the oldest gay bars in the world, Centralhjørnet, which opened in 1917 – now there are more than a dozen bars and clubs in the city operated by and for the LBGTQ+ community.

Beyond the scene, the city shines as a UNESCO World Capital of Architecture with all of the stylish Scandinavian clean-lined spaces that you’d expect, brags an excellent array of museums with design and monarchy taking top billing, and provides photogenic canals perfect for enjoying the city’s coffee culture. Be warned, though, it’s pricey, so you’ll want some tips on how to save some cash in Copenhagen .

Malta is ranked first in Europe on the Rainbow Europe ranking 2023

Pride dates: Usually September, dates to be confirmed Rainbow Europe ranking 2023: 89% (1st in Europe)

Malta might have been a bit late to the party in legalising same-sex unions in comparison to other European countries, but it’s quickly caught up and superseded all others on the continent. Now, the Mediterranean island group is regarded as Europe’s most gay-friendly destination, thanks to a raft of progressive legislation, including criminalising conversion therapy and adding LGBTQ+ protections to its constitution. I also really respect the island for not shying away from using same-sex couples in its marketing campaigns. Still, it’s important to know that while Malta is something of a gay utopia, it remains a very catholic country where others are still fighting for their rights; Malta has some of the most restrictive abortion laws in Europe, for example.

Much of Malta’s gay-friendly scene and best nightlife is concentrated around the beautiful island’s walled capital of Valletta, a dashingly handsome mediaeval city crafted of faded yellow limestone. The only dedicated gay club is Michelangelo, but there are various gay events hosted in other bars throughout the year, with Lollipop’s parties the most anticipated. For something a bit more rowdy, head to St Julian’s, the party capital. Away from the scene, there’s plenty to discover and enjoy. From catamaran cruises and lazy beach afternoons – Malta has a handful of designated nudist beaches – to historical attractions such as the catacombs of storied Mdina and the more quirky like the Popeye Village film-set turned theme park. Along with Gozo, the big island’s little sister, this is one of the warmest gay-friendly winter getaways in Europe .

Old meets new in Manchester

Manchester, England

Pride dates: 23rd – 26th August 2024 Rainbow Europe ranking 2023: United Kingdom 52% (17th in Europe)

The seaside city of Brighton might have bagged the title of England’s gay capital, with London’s Soho hot on its heels, but if you ask me, left-leaning Manchester equally deserves to be a contender for one of Europe’s most gay-friendly cities. It’s a city of friendly, fun and accepting people which has a long history of leading the charge for civil rights in the UK. Allan Horsfall, one of the most prolific gay-rights campaigners in the UK, lived here, and it was in Manchester that he founded the Committee for Homosexual Equality in 1969. It was also the city that birthed the Suffragette movement – visit The Pankhurst Centre to learn more.

Sadly, nowadays, the city’s first-ever gay bar from 1941, Napoleans, has shut its doors, but the scene in general is pumping. Much of the activity is focused around Canal Street, known as the Gay Village. Nightclubs, drag performers and first-class bars all convene on this pedestrianised party street, promising a proper party courtesy of the Mancunian spirit. Away from the scene, there are plenty of other attractions to visit in Manchester , such as gawping at the magnificent John Ryland’s Library, taking in the impressive collection at the Manchester Art Gallery, or, if you’re a footie fan, watching a game at one of the two world-class stadiums.

Amsterdam is renowned as one of Europe's most liberal cities

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Pride dates: 27th July – 4th August 2024 (Canal parade 3rd August) Rainbow Europe ranking 2023: Netherlands 56% (14th in Europe)

Amsterdam, with its gorgeous canals, free-thinking attitude, and incredible collection of Dutch masters at the Rijksmuseum, is a dreamy city break. Unsurprisingly, as one of the most liberal places in Europe, it’s also one of the continent’s most gay-friendly cities. At the heart of the gay scene is the Reguliersdwarsstraat, a bar-packed street of rainbow flags and people seeking a good time. Here, you’ll find more than enough gay bars and clubs to ensure you can party well into the early hours. But Amsterdam’s gay-friendly spaces aren’t just for wild nights but also for preservation, with the IHLIA LGBTI Heritage Museum housing important documents and materials – regular temporary exhibitions are hosted at the IHLIA Placa.

My favourite thing about Amsterdam though is the general atmosphere; there’s something about this city that always makes me feel good. Strolling along the canals, visiting the flower markets, and hopping on a ferry to visit the NDSM Wharf Cultural District are all easy, low-cost activities that promise a smile. Then you’ve got the headline acts to keep you busy, such as touring the Van Gogh Museum or Anne Frank’s house. A weekend in Amsterdam will never be enough time to see it all, but between the parties, people and cultural attractions, you’ll likely already be convinced on a return visit.

Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic

Prague, Czech Republic

Pride dates: 5th – 11th August 2024  Rainbow Europe ranking 2023: Czech Republic 26% (33rd in Europe)

While the Czech Republic is not considered an overly gay-friendly country by European standards, the city of Prague acts as something of a beacon in the middle of it all. That’s not to say it’s a city awash with support for gay rights, but it’s also not a place with much opposition – a Czech friend once described this seemingly non-fused attitude of Prague’s residents as a very much “it’s not my business” approach. Plus, it’s a liberal and open country when it comes to sex in general. There are enough gay bars in the city to have a cracking weekend, though you might need to hop around to find an atmosphere (I was at Friends this summer, and the dance floor was dire).

Then you’ve got all of Prague’s other treasures to keep you entertained, from the impressive architecture of Prague Castle, Old Town Square and Charles Bridge to the LGBT Memory Centre – visitable by appointment – which shares insights into the country’s struggles for equal rights, Imrich Matyáš being a name to know. It’s also worth adding a couple of extra days on to enjoy day trips to the castles of South Bohemia or a retreat in the spa town of Karlovy Vary .

Vienna's blend of old and new makes for a fascinating city break

Vienna, Austria

Pride dates: June, dates to be confirmed Rainbow Europe ranking 2023: Austria 49% (19th in Europe)

It’s reported that up to 10% of Vienna’s population identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, one of the reasons this Austrian city is consistently ranked as one of the most gay-friendly cities in Europe. You’ll spot rainbow flags and symbols across this relatively progressive city, and there are a few big LGBTQ+ events hosted on top of pride, such as the Rainbow Ball and the Fetish Spring event. Much of the gay scene is focused around the Naschmarkt area, while Rosa Lila Villa, a dedicated LGBTQ+ centre on Linke Wienzeile, hosts events, such as drag queen brunches and bingo sessions, alongside its programme of support and safe housing spaces.

Then there’s the city’s cultural clutch, led by the palaces of the Habsburg empire, classical architecture or art, and a myriad of museums and cultural attractions. But Vienna and Austria aren’t all old world; there’s a young, creative pulse beating through the city which requires no need to swat up on the country’s former monarchy. Albertina and Mumok, the city’s modern art museums, are two good places to start.

Of course, there are plenty of other gay-friendly European cities that deserve a mention: Milan, Brussels, Glasgow, Berlin, London – plus up-and-coming destinations such as Lisbon and Bologna; thankfully, it’s a list that seems to be getting longer rather than shorter.

There are also a variety of events in Mykonos that will appeal to gay travellers. The island hosts the annual XLSIOR Mykonos, one of Europe’s largest gay festivals, that attracts international party-goers from a range of backgrounds. The atmosphere of the event is fantastic, with world-class DJs and beach parties that promise to amaze.

Valletta, Malta

Perhaps one of the most popular gay destinations in Europe, Malta is a hub of open-minded culture and has taken great steps to ensure the safety of LGBTQ+ citizens and visitors alike. It was one of the first countries in Europe to ban conversion therapy and has policies that protect individuals from discrimination based on sexuality and gender identity. It is known for having low crime rates and being a very safe country, which is ideal for cautious travellers.

Valletta, the capital city of Malta, has a small but blossoming gay scene with a handful of bars and events that cater to LGBTQ+ travellers. If you’re looking for the best nightlife in Malta, then head to Paceville, a suburb of St Julians that is known for its vibrant evening scene.

Valletta is also famous for hosting a colourful Pride Week annually in September. This fabulous event includes a pride parade and other events that bring together locals and visitors, creating a sense of community and belonging.

The benefit of visiting Valletta is that you can enjoy the cultural highlights of the city. Attractions like St. John’s Co-Cathedral, the Grand Master’s Palace and the Upper Barrakka Gardens showcase the city’s monumental architecture and are great places to explore during the daytime.

Vienna, Austria

Vienna is an extremely accepting city and a popular destination among gay travellers. There is an inclusive vibe which makes the city very attractive alongside its amazing cultural landmarks. Vienna is brimming with beauty which can be seen in its architecture and public parks and adds to the overall experience for gay travellers.

There are a variety of gay bars and clubs in Vienna particularly within the Naschmarkt area. Santo Spirito is a laid back LGBTQ+ wine bar that is perfect for a sophisticated evening. If you’re after a more riotous experience, then Sling Bar is the top choice, known for its vibrant events and diverse clientele.

You can also find LGBTQ+ friendly cafes in Vienna like Café Savoy and Village Café, which are very inclusive and welcoming. They offer a more laid-back atmosphere for gay travellers and will delight with their kitschy vibe.

The Regenbogenball, or the Rainbow Ball, is a premier LGBTQ+ event that blends glamour, music and an inviting ambience. The highlight of Brighton’s gay scene is Brighton Pride , one of the biggest LGBTQ+ events in the UK. This energetic experience features a parade, live music and many parties! It showcases the very best of Brighton’s eclectic atmosphere and attracts visitors from all over the world.

Berlin, Germany

Our final destination is one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly places in Europe, Berlin. The German capital is famous for its LGBTQ+ inclusivity and boasts a legendary gay scene. The progressive nature of the city can be felt in all corners, promising security and acceptance for gay travellers.

Berlin has a long history of LGBTQ+ activism which has led to it having one of the best gay scenes in Europe. 9 Most Gay-Friendly Countries In Europe

gay travel europe guide

  • Destinations
  • LGBTQ+ Travel
  • Types of Travel

Europe is a sought-after destination for many travelers. It’s also a place where those of us in the LGBTQ+ community have many choices to explore safely.

While researching places to travel, many people in the LGBTQ+ community look for sources to explore their options for safe, welcoming, and interesting destinations. One source providing great information is the IGLTA website , the world’s leading network of LGBTQ+ welcoming tourism businesses. They worked with Destination Pride to develop a database that makes it easy to see how countries rank for LGBTQ+ travelers based on thousands of data points that include marriage equality laws, LGBTQ+ laws, census data, and real-time social media sentiment.

When searching the database, users may find it surprising that many European countries and cities rank higher than many states and cities in the United States.

“There’s a misconception that LGBTQ+ travel is one size fits all, but in fact, our community of travelers has the entire range of interests, from culture, nature, and gastronomy to history, great architecture, and nightlife – the same as any other traveler,” said IGLTA President/CEO John Tanzella. “What unites us is the desire to find destinations that both complement our interests and feel safe and welcoming. That’s why Europe has so much to offer LGBTQ+ travelers: it has all of the culture, sights, and natural beauty combined with some of the most well-established and far-reaching LGBTQ+ rights in the world.”

Armed with this important data, those of us in the LGBTQ+ community can safely choose places to explore in Europe and around the world.

Keeping all that in mind, here are just some of the most gay-friendly countries in Europe where LGBTQ+ travelers can enjoy a safe visit.

Cascais, Portugal.

1. Portugal

We must put our adopted country on top of the list. Portugal was one of the first European countries to approve gay marriage in 2010, and the Portuguese constitution bans discrimination of LGBTQ people. The 2019 Eurobarometer public opinion poll said that 74 percent of the Portuguese people supported same-sex marriage.

Both of the largest cities, Lisbon and Porto, have a good-sized LGBTQ+ community. For gay-friendly neighborhoods, check out the Principe Real and the Barrio Alto areas in Lisbon. Lisbon also has a very popular and well attended Gay Pride Festival and parade and the international Queer Lisboa Gay and Lesbian Film Festival every year, too.

Portugal , the oldest nation-state on the Iberian Peninsula, is a country rich in culture and history. Its people are friendly and welcoming, and it has 1,100 miles of coastline, gorgeous views, great wine, and abundant seafood too.

Belgian waffles.

Belgium was the second European country to legalize gay marriage and the second to decriminalize same-gender relationships all the way back in 1795. They were also the first European country to pass transgender and anti-discrimination laws .

Events like Belgian Pride Brussels and the Unicorn Festival in Antwerp are fun reasons to visit this land of tasty chocolate, mussels, and beer. The vibrant city of Brussels offers lots of nightlife and restaurants to enjoy.

Alcala Gate in Madrid.

Spain is at the top of many must-visit lists , and we need to include it on this list as well. The Spaniards are friendly, open-minded, and incredibly welcoming. Spain legalized homosexuality in 1979 and legalized gay marriage in 2005, becoming the third nation in Europe to do so.

Night owls will want to check out the “Movida” which happens between midnight and four in the morning in most of Spain’s big cities. That’s when the party really gets started especially Thursdays through Saturdays.

In Madrid, the gay scene is busy in the Chueca area, and MADO , the Madrid Pride celebration, is one of the biggest in Europe. Barcelona has the Gaixample, a hot spot for the LBGT+ community. Ibiza , Valencia, Sitges, and Benidorm also have gay-friendly areas too.

Spain offers great beaches, art museums, wonderful Spanish food , and a lot more.

Tourists in Nice, France.

It may come as no surprise that France has long supported gay relationships. Homosexuality was legalized in 1791. In 2013, Gay marriage was legalized, and LGBT persons were allowed to serve openly in the French armed forces.

Check out the Marais arrondissement for its popular gay scene. There are many wonderful, welcoming LGBTQ+ restaurants, bars, and cafes to meet up with tourists and locals alike.

Be sure to visit other welcoming cities outside of Paris like Toulouse, Marseille , Lyon , Montpelier, and Nice, too. Large and lively Pride celebrations occur annually in Paris, Lyon, and Marseille.

Many people have travel to Italy high on their wish list. The art, culture, architecture, design, and amazing food make it attractive to LGBTQ+ travelers as well.

LGBTQ+ rights in Italy have made some inroads. A civil union law was passed in 2016 that provides many of the same rights as marriage.

The “ Gay Street ” in Rome may be small, but it’s ideally located near the fascinating Colosseum . Here you’ll find a festive scene with bustling restaurants, bars, and nightlife. Milan , famous for its design and fashion labels, is also home to a large LGBTQ+ community. Florence, Venice, Turin, and, of course, the Amalfi coast all have wonders worth exploring as well.

Pubs in Ireland.

Ireland may seem like a rather conservative country, but it became the first European nation to legalize gay marriage by a popular vote in 2015.

Walk in Oscar Wilde’s footsteps in Dublin and explore the Irish Queer Archive at the National Library of Ireland with its collection of LGBTQ+ materials and literature. Dublin, Cork , and Galway plan annual Pride Events and have many bars and nightclubs to visit. Like all the locals we met in Ireland, the Irish LGBTQ+ community happily share their stories.

We think Ireland is an underestimated destination with much to offer LGBTQ+ travelers and everyone else. Its beautiful countryside and friendly people, historic architecture, delicious food, and world-famous beverages will delight and surprise visitors looking for a special place.

7. Luxembourg

It may be the smallest country in the European Union by population, but the tiny country of Luxembourg is a charming place to visit. It’s also one of just a few countries to have an elected leader that is an openly LGBT+ person. Xavier Bettel was elected as prime minister in 2013 and re-elected in 2018. He was the first European Union leader to have a same-sex marriage. LGBTQ+ people enjoy the same rights as non-LGBT couples. A poll done in 2019 said the 87 percent of Luxembourgers believed gay, lesbian, and transgender people should have the same rights as heterosexuals.

We visited Luxembourg during our honeymoon road trip through Europe and loved it. Packed with delicious restaurants, bars, and shops, it’s the perfect size to wander freely and have fun. It’s also a good spot to include while exploring other European countries like Germany, Belgium, and France.

Home to Vienna, one of our favorite cities, Austria is a beautiful gay-friendly destination. Gay marriage was legalized in 2019 and Austria also recognizes a non-binary gender .

The cosmopolitan city of Vienna welcomes the LGBTQ+ community with the Vienna Pride and Rainbow Parade. Themes like “Stay safe, stay proud” and annual events like Queering the Belvedere and Queer History Tour highlight the significance of LGBTQ+ people to this great and creative place.

Vienna’s fabulous coffee houses are an important part of Viennese culture. Their delightful elegance and delicious pastries beckon visitors to relax, refresh, and enjoy the local scenery. Along with the stunning architecture and art scene, Vienna’s musical heritage is a draw for many LGBTQ+ travelers and others who enjoy its diverse cultural pleasures.

While it may not be as familiar to many, Malta is a small archipelago in the central Mediterranean Sea that’s also an extremely popular LGBTQ+ destination. It’s known for a dynamic gay community that is happy to connect with travelers to ensure their stay is fun and trouble-free.

Malta has consistently received high marks for LGBTQ+ rights and is considered by many to be the most progressive country in Europe.

The sun and beach life are big draws. But there are many historical and cultural interests as well. Malta has over 7,000 years of history to explore, including temples, museums, forts, and several UNESCO World Heritage sites.

They even have a website for the LGBTQ+ community and special gay guide to Malta website to help visitors plan a trip to Malta. Pretty exciting for a country of just about 500,000 people. Perhaps that’s why they receive over two million overnight visitors a year.

Pro Tip: Time a visit to arrive during Pride celebrations or special events to take advantage of all the local happenings and have a much more memorable experience.

Unfortunately, there are still countries around the world where LGBTQ+ people are persecuted . Many of those places have gay communities that also need support. For LGBTQ+ travelers and allies who choose to travel to any of these countries, please reach out to the local queer community for information, advice, and guidance before traveling.

As we mentioned, these are just a few of the most gay-friendly countries in Europe. Be sure to check the IGLTA website for more ideas and recommendations for additional destinations in Europe and the rest of the world.

Milan Pride in 2021.

10 of Europe’s best destinations for LGBTQ+ travellers this Pride season

From Madrid to Mykonos our writer picks the most queer-friendly holiday spots in Europe

I t’s 2003 and my boyfriend and I are hovering nervously at a hotel reception in Woodbridge, Suffolk. We can sense the frosty contempt of the fiftysomething male at the desk when we ask for a double, not a twin room. After we check in, we’re both tetchy: I’m annoyed at how we’ve been treated, while my partner believes we should just “accept” it, that “it’s just the way it is.”

Back then, there was little you could do about such blatant prejudice – at least on a day-to-day basis. Some respite could be found trawling through the listings in Gay Times for gay-owned hotels and B&Bs. But, sadly, travel has long remained an issue for LGBTQ+ people, whether in the UK or abroad, where customs, legality and local cultural norms still need to be considered.

In the last decade, there have, of course, been positive changes. But we’re still not there yet. A new survey by travel agency Booking.com revealed that 71% of British LGBTQ+ travellers have experienced less than welcoming or uncomfortable experiences, and 61% saying they consider their safety and wellbeing when choosing a holiday destination.

And no matter how liberal a country may be, there’s always some anxiety: even the simple act of holding hands is still something only non-LGBTQ+ people can do without thinking or being alert to immediate surroundings.

Thankfully, much of Europe is relatively safe. Leaving aside obvious queer meccas such as London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam and Brighton, here are 10 places to contemplate visiting this summer.

Valletta at dusk.

The first country in the European Union to ban conversion practices , Malta is one of the most LGBTQ-progressive nations in the world. It’s one of only five countries to make queer rights equal at a constitutional level and holds first place on ILGA-Europe’s Rainbow Europe Index, which ranks countries on LGBTQ+ equality.

On my last visit, a gay guide showed me round the winding medieval streets of Valletta and Rabat, pointing out essential bars and restaurants from Michelin-starred Noni to the Monaliza Lounge drag bar, as well as the nightclub Michelangelo in lively Paceville. Stay nearby at Number 11 (doubles from £121), a stylish “adults-only” boutique hotel. Pride runs a full week (2-11 September), and EuroPride comes to Valletta next year from 7-17 September, while for one-off LGBTQ+ parties follow s2sEvents on Facebook.

The Ha’penny Bridge over the River Liffey dates from 1816.

In 2015 Ireland became the first country to legalise same-sex marriage by popular vote. Two years later, Leo Varadkar was elected taoiseach , becoming the world’s fourth openly gay head of government. This spirit filters down into Dublin’s many LGBTQ-friendly establishments: two personal favourites are friendly brunch spot Social Fabric Café in Stoneybatter, one of the city’s most interesting neighbourhoods, and Street 66 bar , a useful cocktail spot before a night at iconic LGBTQ+ institution The George .

Also southside is gay-owned Gutter Bookshop (named after the famous Oscar Wilde quote), and the weekly “big gay disco” Sunday Social at Farrier & Draper ; or cross the river for the Outhouse LGBTQ+ community resource cafe on Capel Street and PantiBar , owned by drag queen, activist and performer Panti Bliss. Dublin Pride runs 22-28 June, with the main parade on 25 June – stay at the centrally located Temple Bar Inn (doubles from £159).

Strøget, in the centre of Copenhagen.

As with other Scandi cities such as Stockholm and Oslo, a high level of LGBTQ+ integration means the commercial scene in the Danish capital is small. Enjoy brunch at Oscar bar and cafe, before a beer at one of Europe’s oldest gay bars, Centralhjornet , which hosts drag and Sunday jazz sessions year-round.

Other venues include Bøssehuset in Christiania, home to theatre, performances, exhibitions and parties – a well-situated boutique hotel is SP34 (doubles from £133) in the Latin Quarter. Copenhagen Pride runs 15-21 August, while the MIX Copenhagen LGBTQ film festival , which started back in 1986, runs 21-30 October. No wonder locals say Copenhagen is “the LGBTQ+ neighbourhood of Scandinavia.”

Glasgow Pride March, UK - 04 Sep 2021

While Edinburgh has long been a safe choice for LGBTQ+ visitors, I prefer bustling Glasgow’s steep streets, diverse neighbourhoods and innovative food scene (head to Lobo in queer-friendly Strathbungo for delicious small plates). The city’s oldest gay bar The Waterloo dates back half a century, while another classic spot is the Underground bar, equally fun for drag or karaoke. Nearby Delmonica’s (known locally as “Del’s”), has been in Merchant City’s “gay triangle” since 1991.

To stay nearby, try the good-value Brunswick hotel (doubles from £50), on a street with venues marked by rainbow flags. Another must is “fiercely independent” LGBTQ+ bookstore Category Is Books : it’s super friendly and joyously busy. Pride Glasgow is this Saturday, 25 June.

People at Milano Pride

Italy still has a way to go to recognise LGBTQ+ residents in law: while same-sex relationships and civil unions are legal, marriage is currently not. But, unlike many Italian cities, in the fashion capital Milan it’s common to see same-sex couples holding hands or kissing. Head to Porta Venezia around Via Lecco for its queer centre – and bar-restaurant Leccomilano , Bar Basso (try its signature Negroni Sbagliato), or relaxed cafe-bar Blanco .

For a big night out there’s warehouse club Magazzini , the quirkily named Toilet , or Club Plastic : started in 1980, this club has been a haunt of Madonna, Freddie Mercury and Elton John. Meanwhile, Gate Party is a monthly queer event at with light shows, theatrical sets, dancers and performers. Pride is on now until the 2 July parade , which attracts about 350,000 people. Stay at the sweetly named Too Cute 2b Str8 (doubles from £67), a relaxed adults-only B&B.

The Nightingale Club dates back to 1969.

On my last visit to Birmingham the rainbow flag seemed to be everywhere, and the historic Gay Village, with its bars, shops and cafes, is hugely visible, centred largely on Hurst Street. Start with bibimbap at the thoroughfare’s Korean restaurant Topokki before drinks at Missing , Sidewalk or lesbian bar The Fox and dancing at the legendary Nightingale Club , the oldest gay club in the city, dating back to 1969.

This summer’s hot LGBTQ+ event is Fierce’s Healing Gardens of Bab (27 June - 17 July): part of Birmingham 2022 Festival, it’s an artistic response to this summer’s Commonwealth Games, celebrating “what the British Empire tried (and failed) to stamp out”. There’ll be artworks, performances, drag and creative club nights with participants from South Africa, Ghana, Canada, India and Australia. Meanwhile, Birmingham Pride takes place 24 and 25 September. For a central pad with a breathtaking city view try aparthotel Staying Cool (doubles from £99).

A bar in Mykonos at sunset.

Most Mediterranean islands, as we’ve seen with Malta, are a safe haven for LGBTQ+ travellers, from dreamy Ibiza to Gran Canaria. Greece is forward-thinking in its LGBTQ+ rights: male and female same-sex sexual activity have been legal in Greece for more than 70 years. Mykonos’s rep as queer heaven dates back to the 1970s, when Jackie Onassis became a regular visitor (she first visited in 1961), before it blossomed as gay resort in the 1980s, with accommodation springing up for the largely male clientele.

In 2022, you can hang out at established hotspots Jackie O , bar Porta or Kastro’s , and stay at the Super Paradise (doubles from £249), handy for the island’s main LGBTQ+ beach. The season’s big gay dance festival is XLSIOR , attended by about 30,000 people (17-24 August)

A Pride gathering at Helsinki Cathedral.

For many gay men of a certain age, Finland is inextricably associated with leather-clad iconic hero Tom of Finland, whose books depict a ruggedly sexualised masculinity during a time pre-1971 when homosexuality was still illegal. Now you can take a tour of where author Touko Laaksonen lived his whole adult life, passing the Kansalaistori (People’s Square) in front of parliament, once a clandestine meeting point for gay men.

LGBTQ+ karaoke fans should check out Mann’s Street , a boozy institution; other fun spots are Street Pride in the Kamppi district, and Kvääristö , a joint for queer women, transgender, and non-binary people. You might even be able to join the Helsinki Homoinvaasio (Helsinki Gay Invasion), whose purpose is to “shake up the gay scene” by taking over random straight bars. Meanwhile, Helsinki Pride takes place 27 June–3 July, regularly attracting 100,000. Stay at LGBTQ-friendly design hotel Klaus K (rooms from £80).

Market Square and the Brabo monument.

Like Malta and Denmark, Belgium scores highly in its LGBTQ+ rights protection . Astonishingly, same-sex sexual activity was legalised in 1795 , while it was the second country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage, in 2003. With Brussels as its queer capital, the industrial waterside city of Antwerp, famous as a fashion hub, is equally inclusive.

Kartonnen Dozen , in the Zurenborg district, is the only LGBTQ+ bookshop in Flanders, while popular “safe haven” Hessenhuis cafe, which opened back in 1993, is housed in a building nearly 500 years old. Late-night owls should head for Cargo Club or fetish club The Boots , while Antwerp Pride runs from 10-15 August. Stay at Boulevard Leopold (doubles from £108) in the Jewish Quarter, whose original LGBTQ+ owners spent nine months converting a three-storey 1890 Flemish townhouse into an elegant deco palace.

The Chueca area has plenty of LGBTQ-friendly bars and cafes.

The facts are dazzling: the sweltering Spanish capital, with its 500,000-strong queer population ( according to city hall ) is Spain’s most queer-friendly city – despite Barcelona and Sitges enjoying a higher profile among many LGBTQ+ holidaymakers. Meanwhile, Madrid Pride (1-10 July) is the second biggest in the world (after San Francisco) and by far the largest in Europe, attracting more than a 1.5million people each year, including 300,000 overseas visitors.

Spain itself is one of the most LGBTQ-friendly countries in the world: same-sex sexual activity was made legal in 1979, and it was the third country to legalise gay marriage, in 2005. First stop has to be Chueca, Madrid’s “gaybourhood” with bars and venues dotted around Plaza de Chueca (also don’t miss the recently refurbished Mercado San Antón for tasty food stalls and a rooftop terrace). Watch drag at the cosy longstanding LL Bar , or sip cocktails at newish lounge-bar Lakama ; stay at the “heterofriendly” adults-only Axel Hotel (doubles from £65) in the Barrio de las Letras.

Queer Europe

We need your help to support our community in Ukraine, at the borders and beyond - NO CONTRIBUTION IS TOO SMALL!

A grand tour of Europe to visit the cradle of western civilization once put the finishing touches to a gentleman's education. Its cathedrals, castles, art museums, historic battlefields, hillside vineyards, picturesque villages, mountain ranges and inviting beaches rank high on modern-day bucket lists. It is far and away the most popular continent among tourists with nearly 600 million international visitors in 2014. France, Spain and Italy are #1, #3 and #5 respectively as the world's top destinations. It's hard to find a better place to eat, drink and be merry. Western Europe is the most welcoming region in the world for LGBTQ travelers and leads the way in recognizing same-sex marriages, but Eastern Europe lags behind. Although homosexuality was decriminalized in Russia in 1993, the current climate has sent many members of the LGBTQ community underground and raised questions about the security of LGBTQ tourists. Europe is the peninsula continent, a peninsula itself of the Euroasian supercontinent and made up of the Balkan, Iberian, Italian and Scandinavian peninsulas. It juts westward from the Ural Mountains in Russia and includes the island nations of Iceland and Malta. Second smallest of the continents, its natural beauty, cultural attractions and distinctive cuisines have been drawing travelers for centuries.

Gay travel guide: The best places to visit in Greece

gay travel europe guide

LGBTQ+ travel is all about inclusivity, which is great because when you visit Greece, you truly get it all. Bustling city streets, islands full of queer nightlife, and quaint beachfront romance can all be part of your gay Greek travel experience.

Stunning landscapes and legendary hospitality prove that the inviting local culture is as warm as the sun-drenched beaches. From ancient history to vibrant modernity, you don’t need an archaeologist to discover the best places to visit in Greece.

Is Greece LGBT-friendly?

Two people walking down a stone-paved street lined with medieval structures.

Greece offers a rich cultural tapestry that’s as diverse as its landscape. While this guide will focus on gay-friendly Greek destinations, there are places where LGBTQ+ travelers may not be as welcomed. It’s essential to familiarise yourself with local laws and customs.

Typically, small islands and rural locations in Greece are more conservative than touristic islands and large cities. While this is true in even the most progressive countries, it’s important to note that the Greek Orthodox Church has a significant influence on society. The church has also made its opinions on gender identity and sexual orientation well known with a clear opposition to LGBTQ+ rights.

Despite opposition from the church and some politicians, Greece recently became the first Orthodox nation to recognise same-sex marriage. The same legislation grants parental and adoption rights to same-sex couples.

While anti-discrimination laws in Greece protect LGBTQ+ locals and travelers, incidents of violence against the community continue to occur. Within a month of the celebrated bill confirming LGBTQ+ marriage and parental rights, an attack on two transgender people in Thessaloniki overshadowed the historic legislation. The advancement of gay rights in Greece doesn’t mean safety and acceptance are universally guaranteed across the country, especially for transgender travelers.

Exercise caution and discretion in smaller towns and conservative areas that are less touristy. While the public is generally open-minded, public displays of affection can draw unwanted and negative attention in many areas of Greece.

While it’s rare you will need them, here are some emergency numbers to keep handy while visiting Greece.

  • Emergency: 112
  • Ambulance: 166
  • Tourist Police: 171

The best places to visit in Greece for gay travelers

I'm thrilled to recommend my favorite Greek destinations. From the well-known to local hidden gems, I have curated this list of the best places to visit in Greece with the LGBTQ+ traveler in mind. Of course, our community is as diverse and unique as the destinations themselves, and I’m certain there is something for all of us.

Thessaloniki

A white sand beach with an opening to a lagoon and port with anchored boats.

Greece’s second-largest city, Thessaloniki, is easily one of the best places to visit in Greece for any gay traveler. It quickly developed a reputation as one of Greece’s up-and-coming gay destinations and is especially popular with the lesbian community. Visitors of all backgrounds make their way to Thessaloniki for the laid-back atmosphere and coastal vibes that will put you instantly at ease.

The city is known as a cultural centre of Greece, is capital of the Macedonia region, and boasts a large student population. As you may imagine, this type of city boasts a popular nightlife, but there are stunning beaches in Thessaloniki and incredible sites from Roman, Byzantine, and mediaeval history.

Thessaloniki Pride is the highlight of the LGBTQ+ calendar in Thessaloniki. In 2024 the event is expected to break attendance records as Thessaloniki will be the official Euro Pride host city. The city won a bid to host the event in 2020, but it was sadly canceled that year.

With pent up anticipation, Thessaloniki is ready to launch Euro Pride on Friday 21 June with a long-awaited opening ceremony concert and full, ten-day calendar of festivities. The main event of Euro Pride will be the parade, fair, and closing concert on Saturday 29 June.

People strolling through a plaza surrounded by old town buildings with the Acropolis in the background.

The Greek capital needs no introduction. Athens is steeped in history, art, culture, cuisine, and it’s as iconic as its namesake, Athena, herself. While it’s an obvious pick for a list of the best places to visit in Greece for gay travelers, it’s far from a basic one.

History lovers should climb the Acropolis and stand in awe of the Parthenon and ancient Greek monuments. The cobblestoned neighborhood below, Plaka, sits in the shadow of the Acropolis and feels like a small village with adorable cafes and cute shops. Do some souvenir shopping, stop for a meal, or visit one of the tavernas in this adorable part of the city.

If you’re looking for gay nightlife in Athens, head to Gazi, a neighborhood known for bars, cafes, and nightclubs that cater to the LGBTQ+ community. Athens is a natural starting point and a destination in Greece where the acceptance and progress of modern Greece resonates the strongest.

Since 2005, Athens has hosted a lively Pride Celebration in Klafthmonos Square. Athens Pride 2024 is slated for 14-16 June, one week before Euro Pride in Thessaloniki begins. Everyone loves a combo deal, and this makes 2024 perfect for visiting Greece’s capital and second-city for back-to-back weeks of Pride.

A man sits on a white wall looking at the tranquil blue sea against the clear blue sky.

Long considered a playground for the gay community, Mykonos is the most popular Greek island for the LGBTQ+ tourists. The vibrant nightlife, open-minded locals, and picturesque landscape are the reasons why.

Chora, or Mykonos Town, the island’s capital and hub of attractions, is the place to stay if you want to be in the centre of the scene. It’s everything you imagine a Greek island city to be - a maze of streets lined by whitewashed cubic houses with bright blue wooden doors.

No trip to Mykonos is complete without a trip to Elia Beach. You’ll see why it’s named among the best gay beaches in Mykonos, Greece if not all of Europe. If you’re looking for a party you can find a plethora of beach bars including at LGBTQ+ venues. The gay nightlife in Mykonos is just as enticing, or you can sit in the shadow of the iconic Mykonos Windmills along Little Venice as the waves of the bay crash onto the walkway.

Finding gay and gay-friendly accommodation is not a problem in Mykonos, but expect to pay a premium on the island. This is especially true during late August when the party scene is flooded with LGBTQ+ tourists, especially gay men visiting the XLSIOR Festival. This international gay party attracts over 30,000 visitors and is taking place 22-28 August 2024.

The soft blue hues of the sun setting over the sea cast a warm glow over the white buildings and blue-domed churches of the island's iconic architecture.

It may not have the gay nightlife of Mykonos, but Santorini is a vibrant island paradise that should be atop your travel list. Santorini is a naturally formed volcanic island with breathtaking topography jutting up from the Aegean Sea. Popular with couples, the island is world-renowned for its sunsets and the best can be viewed from the northern city of Fira.

Santorini is home to ancient ruins, wineries, and colorful beaches. From the volcanic eruption that formed the island, different layers were exposed and gave way to the famous Black Beach, Red Beach, and White Beach. It won’t take long for you to see why Santorini is one of the best places to visit in Greece.

Aerial view of a white village and harbour among rocky hills with turquoise sea waters.

The stunning island of Sifnos is getting increasingly popular with travelers but until recently it maintained hidden gem status, known only to Greek locals. In fact, I never would have known about Sifnos until I tagged along on that family vacation with my Greek friend.

Despite its increased profile, Sifnos is one of the best places to visit in Greece for mellow island vibes and a relaxed atmosphere. Sifnos is an ideal escape for couples, rainbow families, and travelers seeking an affordable Greek island getaway.

On Sifnos, you’ll find remote beaches, cosy fishing villages, and well-maintained hiking trails. It’s also a great island to sample Greek cuisine. There are traditional tavernas and restaurants all over Sifnos and ample nightlife, especially in Apollonia, the island’s largest city. Don’t forget to visit local shops for souvenirs from Sifnos, because the island is famous for its pottery.

A small path across a neighbourhood of colourful buildings lined with potted plants.

Even if it isn’t as well known to the gay community, Crete is one of the best places to visit in Greece. It’s full of exquisite dining, shopping, and history, so it truly has something for everyone.

LGBTQ+ travelers can feel safe in Crete, but exercise caution outside of the main cities. Still, Crete is full of resorts, beaches, and bars that welcome queer visitors. The main cities of Heraklion and Chania are especially LGBTQ-friendly destinations.

For couples, consider the city of Elounda, it’s one of the most romantic places in Crete.

How do I plan a gay holiday in Greece?

Before you sashay away to your Greek holiday, you may feel overwhelmed. LGBTQ+ Greece has been millennia in the making, and you’ve only been planning this trip for a minuscule portion of that time. Fear not - trip planning can often seem intimidating, but with some help, it can be an Aegean Breeze.

To ease your mind let’s cycle through some planning tips and address the most frequently asked questions about travel to Greece. Soon you’ll have everything sorted and a packed itinerary with the best places to visit in Greece ready to be discovered.

When is the best time to visit Greece?

A typical cobbled promenade in Greece with outdoor cafes and whitewashed buildings.

It will come as no surprise that peak season, from mid-June through August, is the busiest tourist season in Greece. During this period, you should expect peak crowds, the warmest temperatures, and prices that match the increased demand.

The shoulder seasons, just before and after peak season, often provide great weather, lower crowds, and more affordable prices on flights and accommodation. Consider the periods of April through early June or September and October for shoulder season. You’ll enjoy outdoor activities without the summer heat and historical attractions with lower crowds.

Winter season from November through March offers mild temperatures with few crowds. Greece isn’t known as a winter destination, although you can enjoy ski resorts in the northern mountains. In this period you’ll experience a different side of Greece that many tourists don’t bother exploring.

Since ancient times, Greek culture has been full of celebrations and festivals. Lucky for you, this hasn’t changed and festivals are a great time to book a trip to gay Greece. Greek cultural, music, and religious festivals are held throughout the year and in June 2024 you can head to Thessaloniki Pride, which marks 2024 Europride.

How do I get to the best places to visit in Greece?

Most travellers from abroad begin their Greek holiday in Athens International Airport, but some of the most popular islands like Santorini and Mykonos have their own airports.

Once you arrive, you’ll discover that getting around is just as exhilarating as spending time in the best places to visit in Greece. You’ll find the Greek public transportation system reliable, organized, and convenient.

Trains and buses connect much of mainland Greece and ferries connect travelers to the sunny Greek islands. Be sure to plan ahead and pre-purchase transportation when possible. This is especially important when travelling between islands where there may be limited ferries or flights per day.

Even far-flung Greek destinations are reachable without a car, but a car hire is often the most efficient way to travel around Greece.

How do I use money in Greece?

In 2001 Greece adopted the Euro, which is convenient if you’re visiting other countries on the Euro. If it’s your first time visiting the country or you haven’t had a Greek vacation in some time, you may be wondering, “do I need cash in Greece?” The short answer is yes, but you can get by with a debit or credit card in most cases.

Card payment was not as common when I first visited Greece, but over the last decade, it’s become the most popular form of payment. Tipping is also customary in Greece and it’s expected to leave a 10-15% tip for excellent service. Having some cash handy for smaller establishments and tips is wise.

How do I prepare for a vacation in Greece?

A man standing outside of his parked car with the door open, looking out over the landscape.

English is widely spoken among the younger generations and staff you may encounter during your vacation in Greece. Still, learning some basic phrases will enhance your time in Greece and show that you’re embracing the local culture. The Greek people are warm and friendly, so greeting someone with “kalimera” (good morning) or “kalispera” (good afternoon) can go a long way.

Stay up to date on the local weather forecasts before you travel to Greece and pack accordingly. Summer weather in Greece can be incredibly hot, even at night. If you plan to visit churches, monasteries, or other sacred places during your trip to Greece, you’ll need modest clothing for these sites.

Remember to stay well-hydrated, especially in the summer sun or when consuming alcohol. You don’t want to miss a day of Pride fun in Thessaloniki because drinking in the June sun left you dehydrated. Tap water in Greece is safe to drink, but bottled water is also available for those who prefer it.

Follow these tips, bookmark this LGBTQ+ travel guide of the best places to visit in Greece, and you’ll have a Greek trip for the ages.

The 10 Best Gay Hotels in Europe for Summer May 03 2023 by Lachlan

The 10 Best Gay Hotels in Europe for Summer

The sun is out and it’s time to celebrate! To help you have a season to remember, we’ve rounded up the continent’s best gay hotels to stay in for summer.

From glistening swimming pools in Saint Tropez , to dreamy island resorts in Ibiza and Sicily , give yourself the gift of travel and gorgeous LGBTQ+ accommodation with a stay at one of these fab gay hotels.

Axel Hotel Madrid

gay travel europe guide

The Axel Hotel chain has become the poster child for gorgeous gay accommodation across the world, and with the fabulous summer-inspired amenities at Axel Madrid , this is THE place to be for summer 2022. Within close proximity to Madrid’s happening - and gay - Cheuca district, you can spend your days mingling with the gay locals in one of the area’s many bars, before retreating for the afternoon on the hotel’s iconic rooftop. The claim to fame here is the dreamy swimming pool overlooking the city’s iconic skyline. We’ll meet you at happy hour! Good to know: Axel is currently offering a 30% discount promo on all bookings made 60 days in advance.

Purple Hotel Ibiza

gay travel europe guide

Go purple or go home! Welcome to Ibiza’s adults-only and gay-only Purple Hotel . If your perfect summer vacay involves spending the days by the pool and the evening’s partying by the beach, both Ibiza and Purple Hotel are for you. As the hotel’s name would suggest, rooms are painted in purple and come equipped with air-conditioning should you need a break from the balearic sun! We’ve seen the pool here though, so we imagine this is where you’ll spend most of your time! With a gay-only clientele, this is also the perfect spot to meet other gay travelers in Ibiza.

Axel Barcelona

gay travel europe guide

We’ve already told you how great Axel Madrid is, but if you’d rather spend your summer in Spain’s other iconic city, Barcelona , then we recommend locking in a stay at Axel Barcelona . Just like Axel Madrid, this hetero-friendly hotel provides gay travelers all the comfort, security, and fun they desire from a fun summer getaway. Located in the heart of Barcelona’s Gay-xample neighborhood, convenience is key here! But with all the fab amenities at Axel Barcelona, you may never want to leave. Our fave part is the lively Sky Bar, where you’ll find a dreamy rooftop bar and swimming pool overlooking the Eixample district - bliss! Good to know: Axel is currently offering a 30% discount promo on all bookings made 60 days in advance.

Rochari Hotel Mykonos

gay travel europe guide

A summer in Europe feels incomplete without a trip to Greece , and for LGBTQ travelers, it’s hard to look past Mykonos . The bopping island hosts many gay festivals over the summer, but if you’re looking to take things a little slower and enjoy a slice of luxury while in Mykonos, check into the gorgeous Rochari Hotel . Guests rave about the friendly staff and superb breakfast here, but we have to say we’re sold by the swimming pool. Either way, discover all the hotel’s great benefits for yourself and have a summer to remember with a stay at the Rochari Hotel.

Atlantic Sun Beach Gran Canaria

gay travel europe guide

Gran Canaria is already famous for its lively LGBTQ scene and towering sand dunes. But  Atlantic Sun Beach is hands down another feather in the island’s rainbow cap!
