Amazing gig, beautiful venue. Everything looked and sounded awesome. It was nice to having seating and not to be squashed into a dirty sweaty venue so had a great view. Gaz was on top form. Very enjoyable.

Gaz Coombes is amazing.

The music, performance and artist.

The London Palladium is not.

The last time I was there was 1992 for Dinosaur Jr. My ears bled and i quote it as the loudest concert I have ever gone to.

The last time I saw Gaz was 3 weeks ago at the Rough Trade record release. It was one of the most beautiful concerts I've been to. Gaz, his guitar, keyboard and magic boxes.

After last night, I realize that the issue is the Palladium.

It was built as an acoustic hall for performances without amplification.

With modern concerts the air pressure is abnormal and blows out your ears.

in 1992 this led to my ears ringing for a week.

Last night, it led to Gaz being robbed of his soul and the songs of their intimicy.

A real shame.

I highly recommend seeing Gaz Coombes. To me he is a true artist and lovely performer.

I will never go see a show at the London Palladium again. (Unless it is acoustic !)

Great venue. Great atmosphere. Great performance. Loved it.

I've been a far-off fan of Gaz Coombes for a while now. Dipped into his music, but not listened to him recently but boy did he bring me up to date on what I've been missing!

From full-on barnstorming rock numbers back to solo piano ballads, then back onto racaous anthems I thought his performance was nuanced and strong throughout and his voice was phenomenal particularly when on the piano.

It was just great to see an actual musician who can write his own material and then perform it live brilliantly.

A real joy. Many thanks Gaz.

Gaz Coombes interview: “The 90s were a free-for-all”

By Classic Pop | February 28, 2023

Gaz Coombes Supergrass

Gaz Coombes has matured from the scamp with the sideburns in Supergrass to thoughtful solo artist. For his new solo album, he tells us why he’s looking forwards, not backwards. By W ill Simpson

W e’re nearing the end of the year and Gaz Coombes is sat in his home studio clad in a sheepskin coat and beany hat.

“There’s no central heating and the electric radiator I use broke the other day,” he shrugs. So he’s had to turn on his valve desk. “That gets really warm and eventually it does get quite toasty in here!”

You might think this is a down-on-his-luck ex-pop star struggling with the cost of living crisis, but Coombes is doing very nicely thank you.

Over the last decade he’s managed to develop a solo identity quite separate from the fondly-regarded Britpop band he fronted for nearly two decades.

He’s pulled off one of the most difficult tricks in pop – maturing whilst not losing his fanbase and still being recognisably himself.

He’s still the scamp with the sideburns. Just a bit more thoughtful and considered. Like we all are (or should be) once we hit our 40s.

Compared to others, his lockdown was relatively stress-free. He even managed to use the time to build this studio.

“We did alright,” he smiles. “I was very lucky to have a neighbour who’s a builder. Took 10 weeks and then off I went. So that was a cool use of time. I was very lucky to be able to do that.”

It was in there that the songs that comprise his fourth solo album, Turn The Car Around , began to take shape.

gaz coombes tour 2022

“I mean, you can record anywhere but it is great to get all of my gear into one place. I come in and feel like, ‘Yes… let’s get on with it.”

Coombes worked on the songs from mid-2020 through to 2021 and the album would probably have been out earlier but for a bit of unfinished business from before the pandemic. Supergrass were just starting out on their reunion tour when it (like everything) came grinding to a halt in March 2020.

  • Read more: Louise Wener interview: “It’s something we want to do for the pure joy of it”

The reunion had come out of the blue.

“Me and Danny [Goffey, drummer] remained in touch all the way through, and the management team that he’s working with suggested that they could help put it together. There were some anniversaries coming up. It was 10 years since the split.

“All these little dates fitted together and I personally felt maybe if we don’t do it now, either it ain’t going to happen or it won’t happen for another 10 years. So yeah, it was a case of, ‘Sod it, let’s get in a room’ to see how the songs sound. And luckily they sounded great.

“I’m really glad we did it, but I’m gutted that it took three years. It was a pity because it brought back some of those strains and stresses of being in the band. But that’s just the nature of the pandemic being what it was and the reunion dragging on. It was worth it, though.”

Gaz Coombes Supergrass

The only reservation Coombes had was that getting the old gang back together seemed a retrograde move for an artist whose albums have all been critically acclaimed (2015’s Matador bagged a Mercury nomination ).

“Yes, I was anxious about that,” he admits. “Having got into a flow and the last two albums having done so well, it seemed a bit odd, like a backward step.

“But then I was confident that I could operate both things together and it seems that I did, because I was obviously writing this record mainly during the reunion so… I feel like I made best use of both things.”

On previous albums Coombes had played most of the instruments himself but on Turn The Car Around there was more input from two band members – bassist Nick Fowler and keyboard player Garo Nahoulakian.

“They’d come over to do sessions and work on the stuff that I’d got together already and I’d get them to put some overdubs on. They’re both such musical people and it’s really brilliant to have them in to vibe off really. But I remain the core – I’m still on the drums during most of this record.”

The trio used an interesting, almost Eno-like method, of projecting films onto themselves while they played in the studio.

“We were having a session here, just getting in the flow and I have a projector in here anyway so we can watch movies as a family.

“So I just switched it on while we were working and it just does something within the room – the fact that there’s this different medium going on, it stops people looking at their fretboards and releases the brain to look around.

“The visuals on the wall unconsciously take you to other places and it stops the focus being on what you’re playing. It loosens things up.”

The resulting album is a wistful, graceful-sounding piece of work with several of the songs alluding to the depth, beauty and pain of love.

“I think these lyrics are just a way of me processing stuff,” he suggests. Songs like Dance On and the title track took a while because they were about emotional things, I suppose.

“There’s a couple of lines about my mother dying which was 15 years ago now. It still kinda creeps out into songs because it’s such a big hole and it’s still there.”

It’s not all personal. Sonny The Strong is a story song of a boxer who gets sent to war. Coombes was inspired by Randolph Turpin, the 1950s middleweight from Leamington Spa who died in suspicious circumstances after he retired from the ring.

“ Me and my wife were watching loads of documentaries and got into this idea of being whipped out of your career at the height of your fame and sent to war and how incredible that must have been.

“It was an amalgamation of him and a couple of other boxers. Randolph didn’t go to war but I needed a verse two! It was fun to write that one.”

Then there’s Long Live The Strange , a rallying cry along similar lines to Pulp’s Misfits .

“They’re the people who don’t think they fit in, who are only them and they’re unique. I’ve used ‘strange’ in lyrics for years and its always in the most endearing sense.

“We were the strange ones once, living in Oxford. We always thought we were a bit odd and quirky and liked to hang out with other people who were also a bit odd and quirky.”

Unlike their Britpop peers, Supergrass – or at least Coombes and bassist Mick Quinn – declined to move down to London: “It always felt good being in a band here and not being in the eye of the storm,” he explains.

It meant they were never over-exposed, but also never reached Blur or Oasis levels of fame. Perhaps they never quite fulfilled their potential. Coombes ponders this.

gaz coombes tour 2022

“It’s kind of a game that’s quite tough to play. You’ve got to be different kind of people or at least have different kind of managers.”

“But we were a gang. We really loved making music together – it was a very family vibe and we lived quite rurally. Maybe the ingredients weren’t set up for us to be like Oasis, even though our music was clearly so much better!” he says with a chuckle.

“No I do love Oasis, especially that first record. But we liked to underplay. Maybe we underplayed ourselves out of fame and fortune. But we were happy.”

Whatever, they left behind some cracking singles. Not least Alright , which will be forever etched in our collective memory as one of the anthems of the 90s, that sunlit era between the end of the Cold War and 9/11. “It was a free-for-all. It was chaotic. It was fun,” is Coombes’ recollection.

“It was a bit like the new 60s – the way that fashion and music worked together, it was like a reinvention of that era. Early on with our band there were a lot of photos where we’ve all got flares, purple velvet suits, long hair and sideburns. It could have been 1967.”

Supergrass kept at it longer than their contemporaries. They only split up in 2010 when sessions for album seven ran aground. Did they go on too long?

“That’s a hard one. What I do know is that we made three really incredible records – the first three. I’m glad we went on to have a long career. That’s something cool we wanted to emulate from our favourite bands from the 60s and 70s. I liked that lifespan of those bands.”

gaz coombes tour 2022

“I know it’s a beautiful thing and people love the band but no… I don’t know why you’d force the issue when it’s not happening just to keep it going. That wouldn’t fulfil me at all. But the door is never closed to doing some more shows.”

In the meantime, the valve desk is finally making things toasty and you sense that Gaz Coombes is only just warming up as a solo artist.

“Supergrass was something that dominated my life from the age of 15, all the way to 2010,” he reflects. “I learned so much. I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing now without any of that for sure. But it’s the next stage now and I’m not afraid of any of these new stages to come.”

Gaz Coombes: “I feel like I’m writing the best stuff I’ve ever written”

The Supergrass frontman on his new album ‘Turn The Car Around’, honouring Taylor Hawkins at Wembley and having a fan in Billie Eilish

Gaz Coombes press image

“T he heating hasn’t come on in the studio yet but all is good, it’s very snowy and quite pretty out there,” enthuses a beaming Gaz Coombes as he surveys the white blanket of land outside his Oxfordshire studio on the first day of last December’s big freeze.

He’s got every right to be brimming with confidence. In 2022, Supergrass drew a line under their “satisfying” if later than planned reunion, rocked out with Chic legend Nile Rodgers in honour of the late Taylor Hawkins and learnt that Billie Eilish and Jason Sudeikis are both huge fans of the band. “The gigs and the performances were great,” reflects Coombes over Zoom with NME . “We felt really satisfied and just really happy to be able to play those songs to everybody and to have played them so well. It was also great to see the response from everybody.”

During what little downtime he had in between, the Supergrass frontman spent the rest of last year chipping away at his fourth solo album ‘Turn The Car Around’, which he is currently preparing to take on the road next month. We spoke to the Supergrass frontman about his new record and what lies ahead in 2023.

Hi Gaz! It’s 10 years since you became a solo artist. Did it work out as you intended and do you feel you’re a better songwriter now?

Gaz Coombes: “I don’t know. My intentions were very vague at the beginning. I came out of Supergrass and I didn’t really do anything for a little bit but as the songs started to come, I thought I might have a record here. Then it was [2015 album] ‘Matador’ when things really picked up. My writing and recording approach just seemed to click perfectly around 2014-15 and that just basically fuelled the next six years for me. Really believing in the new songs and feeling like I’m writing the best stuff I’ve ever written and communicating that.”

‘Long Live The Strange’ on the album was inspired by a trip with your daughter to see Cavetown…

“I heard Cavetown a lot coming from my daughter Tiger’s bedroom and she’d been getting into a lot of different music, a lot of old stuff, Fleetwood Mac , The Clash , The Cure but then at the same time hearing I guess what other teenagers were really digging online. Then we went to this gig in the middle of the pandemic in 2020 and there was just a vibe that people were still kind of a bit on edge, a bit delicate but he was just super cool. He came out very unassuming with an acoustic guitar, very sort of underplayed and then the room just went with him and was singing along. I looked around and I just thought it was quite a powerful moment really, a live experience on a very small scale. It was one of those nights where you felt quite connected to what the idea of performing live music was again, that connection with the audience.”

‘Sonny The Strong’ is about a semi-fictionalised British boxer in post World War II Britain. How did you come up with the idea for that?

“It was based on Randolph Turpin, this British boxer in the ’50s. He had his moment when he defeated [world champion] Sugar Ray Robinson to claim the title and then just got involved with the mob and money troubles and had this incredibly turbulent life that ended very tragically.

“I was watching a lot of documentaries over the last couple of years at home and I got into these rise and fall stories. When I wrote this song, I had the first line and it was about somebody but it was just a case of finding who it was about? And then I found this article on Randy Turpin which was fascinating.”

You teamed up with Willie J Healey and Ride drummer Loz Colbert on this album too. How did that come about?

“I was doing backing vocals with The Roxys – the girls that sing for me live – and I wanted Willie J and Loz involved. I had this four part gang backing vocal idea that I thought Willie’s voice would be perfect for. So he came over, we spent the day laying down some backing vocals on ‘Long Live The Strange’ and ‘This Love’ and it was brilliant.

“With Loz I managed to get him on some drums on ‘Not The Only Things’ before the pandemic. He came over to my house and put some beats down for this track that went through quite a lot of different mixes before I came up with the final version. But I kept that beat throughout.”

I believe Nile Rodgers nicknamed The Roxys. How did that happen?

“We’d just done this performance on Later… With Jules Holland and we met Nile down the hallway. He was great to meet and such a sweet guy. I remember him saying: ‘Yeah your guitar sound was sick, it was like filthy’. I thought, ‘that’s great Nile thinks my guitar sounds filthy’. Then he saw the girls and he just pointed at them and went ‘Roxy, Roxy, Roxy’. He was just being kind of funny and charming and that was it. It was kind of sweet how it came about. He’s just one of those guys who says something cool in the moment.”

gaz coombes tour 2022

Will you go back to Supergrass at some point?

“Reunions can’t go on forever and they’ve got to have some sort of lifespan. It was always gonna be that year, we were gonna do everything in 2020. But because of what happened with the pandemic, obviously it got spread out into two and a half, almost three years which is pretty crazy. But it’s cool that it ended in a way where we could definitely look at the possibility of other shows down the line if it feels right and if everyone’s in the right place.”

What moments stood out for you over the course of the reunion?

“ Glastonbury was a real moment for us, just to play there again on The Other Stage. We always had a bit of a love affair with Glastonbury from our earliest performance in ’95. That shaped our band in many ways, that early performance. I just remember being quite excitable but kind of nervous and young at the time. It was that combination of shitting my pants but having this excitement that needed to be released, which are always good ingredients for a live performance.”

I hear Billie Eilish was watching from the side of the stage when you played Glastonbury in 2022?

“So I heard, yeah. I didn’t see her but I heard she was singing along to ‘Sun Hits The Sky’ on our little viewing gantry which was kind of cool. I’ve got huge respect for her. I think what she does is great and how she does it is cool. They’re an interesting writing team Eilish and her brother [ Finneas ] as well.”

Supergrass were close to Foo Fighters and Taylor Hawkins. How was it playing that tribute show at Wembley Stadium?

“The day itself was incredibly special and it was amazing how they [the Foo Fighters ] managed to piece it all together. It had this almost Live Aid feel about it and it was an emotional day for everybody but really special. There was something in the audience as well that night. It was an incredible vibe.

“Getting on stage with Nile Rodgers was a total honour too and I loved every minute of our performance of [ David Bowie ’s] ‘Modern Love’. I know that song backwards but actually when I rehearsed it, I’d been visiting some friends up north, they’ve got kids as well and my mate has got this garage set up with loads of equipment and his boy is a really good drummer. We set up this family band with my daughter on bass and his boy on drums and then we ran through ‘Modern Love’ about 10 times and it was brilliant. So I’ve got the family band to thank for honing my performance on that one.”

What do you think Taylor would have made of the show?

“He would have been incredibly blown away I imagine. It was so cool to be able to do that because his death was such a fucking shock and so fucking horrible for everybody. I can’t imagine what the Foos and his family were going through. But if you can try and do something special just to mark what a beautiful guy he was… it’s great that they managed to do that and deliver it in such a great way.”

There was archive footage of Danny Goffey recalling the time Taylor jumped on the drums for ‘Caught By The Fuzz’ when Supergrass toured with the Foo Fighters in the ‘90s. What were your memories of those times?

“Taylor would kind of play our songs in soundchecks and stuff and we’d often hear it. I remember being told when he used to play with Alanis Morissette , he used to do ‘Lenny’ and he got Alanis’ band into ‘Lenny’. Of course he loved Danny. They had this great little drummers thing going on.

“As for that performance, at that moment we were like ‘come on and play with us’. He played (‘Caught By The Fuzz’) so fast, it was ridiculous. I think he dropped the eighths on the [hi]-hats in that American rock way. Suddenly, ‘Caught By The Fuzz’ was even faster than it was originally which is quite a feat in itself. Then Danny was like, ‘Hey why am not on this stage?’ So he made sure he was on the stage and he ran on and jumped on Taylor. That was quite a moment.”

‘Ted Lasso’ star Jason Sudeikis also admitted to being a Supergrass fan at Wembley too.

“Yeah, I met him just a couple of days before that Wembley show and he was really lovely. I didn’t realise he was such a big fan. It’s always interesting when you meet new people and you don’t realise they know who you are, know what your band is like and have heard your music. I did like Ted Lasso as well. It’s a great feel good series.”

‘Turn The Car Around is out on January 13 on Hot Fruit Recordings / Virgin Music.

Where I Am Now: Gaz Coombes

"...it's more important now than ever, if i'm creating something, for it to be really pure self-expression and for me not worry about what it's supposed to do, if it's supposed to hit number one in the charts or whatever.".

Interview by Emily Waller Photos by James George Potter

For someone with such impressive credentials, Gaz Coombes is incredibly humble. 2022 marked 10 years of a solid solo career that birthed three albums, including the Mercury nominated Matador . 2022 also saw the end of a successful string of reunion shows with Supergrass who reformed in 2019, not to make new music, but to go out and play songs that have remained not only brilliant, but timeless in their appeal and delivery. Coombes' own appeal as an artist and frontman is wide-ranging - just four months prior to our meeting at Rough Trade he was on stage in front of a 90,000-strong Wembley crowd, celebrating the life of his late friend Taylor Hawkins , the Foo Fighters drummer who tragically passed away last year.

But what is it that cements Gaz Coombes ’ enduring charm? Quite simply: stunningly raw talent and a clear devotion to his craft. I was lucky enough to be present at his underplay solo show at The Lexington in April of last year, a gig that saw him play a number of album favourites as well as the live debut of Sonny the Strong , the lead single from his excellent new record Turn The Car Around . Armed with only a piano and a guitar it was one of the most moving performances I’ve been witness to, so acute is his attention to storytelling, to sentiment and to his utterly enthralled audience. The musical gifts on display are some of the best British music has to offer.

gaz coombes tour 2022

Taking a break to chat between his sell-out in-store sets at Rough Trade East, Gaz speaks candidly about memories of music, working through weird times and finding creative liberation. We speak for no more than half an hour but it's clear from the off, Gaz Coombes makes music that means something, but never at the cost of his enjoyment in creating it. So please, listen closely, for truly it is a gift to us all.

Where I Am Now examines a personal journey, through music, connection and self expression.

You grew up in a very musical household. In a recent piece for The Big Issue you describe your uncle’s record collection being stored at your childhood home while he was away. Is there one person in particular - family or friend - that you could cite as the biggest influence on your early musical interests?

It's tricky because I don’t think there's one person. Maybe for the old stuff, for the classics, probably my uncle’s record collection yeah. My mum had a nice collection of Beatles vinyl so some of my earliest memories were hearing Sgt Pepper from the record player in the living room, I must have been 5 or 6 years old. And then my brother Ed, during the time he was living at home, he was getting a lot of cassettes of the modern stuff that was out, you know, Spacemen 3, Dinosaur Jr, Chapterhouse and some of the Thames Valley stuff. And then older friends too, you know…my cousin was really into Happy Mondays and we’d go to gigs and stuff. So yeah, there wasn’t one person that opened my eyes, more a collection of people.

When you look back at your childhood, is there a singular stand-out piece of music that soundtracks those early years?

I mean probably anything that was on Sesame Street or The Muppets , I used to love that stuff. There was this brilliant video they did that taught you to count to 12, but it was this really funky bit of music with this really psychedelic cartoon pinball machine thing. That was one of my earliest memories where I thought "wow this sounds cool." I don’t know if that was defining of my childhood, but certainly it stuck out pre-10 years old. And then probably a record like Spacemen 3 was a big record of my teens.

When you decided you wanted to form a band, was there a particular group you looked up to or wanted to model your own journey on?

I think Dinosaur Jr. We were covering Freak Scene as a young school band, we just did a few covers, The Smiths and The Cure . But I loved playing Freak Scene as a band, so easy to play and it was melodic and a bit funky. So yeah, in a way, that was a track that made me want to be in band.

Did reuniting and going back out on tour with Supergrass re-inform any approaches to your solo work or solo performance?

I don't think so no, I think I was able to compartmentalise the two. The reunion shows, we were excited to get back on stage and we knew from rehearsals that the songs still felt great, still sounded fresh so we knew it'd be a real blast to play them again and it was, definitely. But it was such a patchy two years with Covid. We kicked off with the reunion and then everything shut down and it was a case of just piecing together the rescheduled gigs and stuff, so it's a shame it became so fragmented. But in all of those moments of downtime I could be at home working on my record, so it was easy to separate the two. There wasn't a particular inspiration from doing that because it's a different band and my approach as a solo artist is very different to how we wrote in Supergrass . But equally, always great to get on stage and do big shows, like Glastonbury. They're great for getting into that flow of performing and being in front of big crowds, building confidence, you know. But yeah, I guess being in Supergrass for so many years, it's where I learnt all my moves.

Spacemen 3 - Playing with Fire This was a defining record of my early teens, a band that made me want to be in a band... just something about it. They used to list the guitar names [ flips record over ] and I quite enjoy that weird little detail.

You’ve experienced huge success as a musician since the 90s, do you often think about how much the industry has evolved. Is making an album a more positive experience today compared to back then?

I see changes all over but when I'm working or writing, I'm just in that zone and nothing has changed for me in the way I write and record. In a way, it's more important now than ever, if I'm creating something, for it to be really pure self-expression and for me not worry about what it's supposed to do, if it's supposed to hit number one in the charts or whatever. I'm really enjoying this part of my life in music, I feel really liberated to be able to do what I want and enjoy that creative process as much as possible. But yeah, everything has changed, it's almost too much to get into! Everything has changed since 2019 with Covid and social media...

Do you feel lucky that social media wasn't a thing when you were young and in a band?

Yeah, I'm not into ranting about it or moaning about it, I just think it's the way it is and sometimes I really like it, other times I can't be arsed and I think that's fine. We're within our rights to live the way we want to live but I think it's probably good that back then it wasn't around, it would have been really hard to document everything. I wonder how we will look back in 30 years and whether all these videos and things will be nostalgic in some way? It's interesting times.

Broadcast - Tender Buttons I love their vibe and I love the sound. I Found The F , great track, ends up on so many of my playlists because it just seems to fit in with so many of them.

You celebrated 10 years of your solo career in 2022. Do you think the Gaz Coombes of the early 90s would be fascinated to know that one of the most in demand formats for your solo album in 2023 is on vinyl?

Yeah I think so, I think when you see these attempts at changing the formats, it's quite cool and quite charming that the cream has risen to the top. Vinyl, it just works right? But it's mad because it's so expensive. But it's just shown itself to be really tactile, it's a winner.

Of your new album you’ve shared that it’s a record you’ve been building up to for the last few years. Is there a track on Turn The Car Around that is a particular favourite or has special significance? Was one written for your daughter?

It was more inspired by her. I wrote The Girl Who Fell To Earth in 2015, sort of about my daughter and autism and how she sees things. It's tricky because it needs to be universal, I don't want anything to be super personal "this is about Raya", it's all inspired. I started writing Not The Only Things for this new record and a few lyrics came out from me talking to her, a few notes on what life's like. So it's kind of like a sequel, 7 years later, how's it going sort of thing. But the message is a universal one.

The Specials - The Specials This is an amazing album and I just want to celebrate Terry. I always thought Robert Smith and Terry Hall were really similar. As a 12 year old I was fascinated by how similar they were, even wondering if they were the same person! Me and my wife just love The Specials and play it so much, so glass to Terry.

gaz coombes tour 2022

Your lost your mum at a young age and often life, however well lived, will sadly endure a certain amount of personal struggle at some point. Has music been an aid in healing for you over the years?

Completely. It's a lot easier for me to articulate stuff through music, rather than talking to people about it, or speaking to professionals or getting therapy, which I probably should have done to try to get to grips with it all. Writing, for me, was just a part of that grieving process. Also I want to write and record stuff that makes me feel good, so it's like comfort, it makes me feel emotion and it's a really addictive feeling.

Success can be interpreted so differently, but I think it is such a personal thing to gauge. Through all your achievements - both as part of a group and as a soloist - does this album marks a significant milestone for you personally?

At the end of the day it's another record. I don't want to place too much on that, but it's been my world for the last two years and everything is in there, all the weird times and lots of beautiful moments. Life's about light and dark. It's great that it's been 10 years of my solo career and I can look back at the great records I did with Supergrass , so there's a kind of serendipity happening I suppose, but really I'm just so excited to get this record out.

Goat - Oh Death I love Goat . It's great to hear new music that's a bit insane and I'm a psychedelic kid, so this really lights my candle.

New Release Section: Gaz Coombes, “Long Live The Strange”

gaz coombes tour 2022

VIA PRESS RELEASE | Ahead of the release of his forthcoming solo album Turn The Car Around, due January 13th 2023 via Hot Fruit Recordings / Virgin Music, Gaz Coombes has released his latest new single “Long Live The Strange” and accompanying music video.

gaz coombes tour 2022

Gaz explains “This song was written as a celebration of the weird and wonderful and as a reminder to embrace that at all times.” The single stands as an ode to how music has the power to bring people together. He wrote it after taking his daughter Tiger to see Cavetown in Oxford in 2020. “The show had a big impact on me,” he recalls.

“It was what live performance is all about, connecting with an audience that consists of anybody and everybody who wants to be part of it, it’s fully inclusive and I found that quite powerful.” It was heartening to Coombes to discover, 30 years after he listened to Inspiral Carpets and Pixies and The Wedding Present and felt like he was part of a gang, there was still a place where the strange ones go. “It’s obviously strange in the nicest sense of the word,” he adds.

“Long Live the Strange” is accompanied by a new video directed by Niall Trask. Playfully weaving in the songs’ themes of inclusion and acceptance, the beautifully shot video sees Gaz enlisting hundreds of friends to create something delightfully idiosyncratic to accompany this ode to the outsiders.

Discussing the video, Trask playfully jokes “When I was brought onto the project, Gaz had already been living amongst the community of mannequins for several months. His knowledge of them allowed me to have no issues directing them nor overcome the language barrier. The whole process was fascinating and certainly a culture shock; coming from South London, I found the silence and stillness almost deafening. It’s certainly one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve ever had as a filmmaker.”

Written and recorded in his gloriously ramshackle Oxfordshire outhouse Studio, with Turn The Car Around (13th January) Gaz has emerged with the best work of his illustrious career. It’s an album that both taps into the sonic palettes and lyrical themes of its predecessors and marks the third and final part of a trilogy of records alongside 2015’s Mercury and Ivor Novello nominated sophomore album Matador and 2018’s World’s Strongest Man. At the same time, it carves a bold new way forwards. “There’s a lot of subject matter in there that I’ve played with and maybe not managed to see through in the past. I’ve evolved,” Gaz adds.

As he celebrates 10 years of his lauded solo career, riding the crest of the Supergrass reunion wave and looking ahead to a bold new album release in Turn The Car Around, Gaz Coombes will tour Europe and the UK on the headline dates below through March and April 2023.

Supergrass’ Gaz Coombes to Support Robbie Williams on 2023 Australian Tour

By Jules LeFevre

Supergrass co-founder Gaz Coombes has been announced as the support act on Robbie Williams’ upcoming Australian tour. The songwriter will appear at all of Williams’ Australian shows, which will begin at Sydney’s Allianz Stadium on Thursday, 16th November.

Williams and Coombes will then play two A Day on the Green shows at Mount Cotton in Queensland, before heading to Melbourne, Geelong, Adelaide, and finally Swan Valley in Western Australia (for more winery shows). See the full list and ticket details below.

Supergrass: ‘Alright’

It’ll be Coombes’ first tour of Australia since 2018 , when he was here in support of his third solo album World’s Strongest Man. In the years since he’s released one more album, Turn The Car Around , which arrived in January this year.

Supergrass split up in 2010 but reunited in 2019 for a series of live shows; they also released a live album Live On Other Planets, which raised funds for venues affected by the pandemic.

“Reunions can’t go on forever and they’ve got to have some sort of lifespan,” Coombes told NME this year about whether more shows were on the cards. “It was always gonna be that year, we were gonna do everything in 2020. But because of what happened with the pandemic, obviously it got spread out into two and a half, almost three years which is pretty crazy.

“But it’s cool that it ended in a way where we could definitely look at the possibility of other shows down the line if it feels right and if everyone’s in the right place.”

The other support slot on Williams’ tour will be taken up by Williams’ electronic project, Lufthaus. Williams was last in Australia to perform at the AFL Grand Final, where he performed a duet with Delta Goodrem (‘Kids’) and tore through a rendition of John Farnham’s ‘You’re The Voice’.

Tours, Attractions and Things To Do in Khabarovsk

Khabarovsk travel guide.

  • 2. Attractions
  • 3. Cultural life
  • 4. Souvenirs

Khabarovsk, Russia fascinates visitors with its unusual heritage and fabulous untouched nature. Tourists are drawn to the native culture, eclectic architecture and mesmerizing waters in this off-the-beaten-track destination, which promises a unique and memorable vacation.

As the center of Russia’s far eastern region of Khabarovsk Krai, the city offers celebrations throughout the year which are sure to give added flair to your trip, from traditional culture days to large-scale food fests. It is easy to keep a full itinerary during your stay thanks to its many theaters, museums, restaurants, workshops and quest rooms. Guests who want a more relaxed holiday can venture into the serenity of Khabarovsk nature, including the coast of the Sea of Japan or one of the region’s many picturesque lakes .

Khabarovsk Architecture

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk architecture surprises with its harmonious blending of varying types and styles. This is due in large part to major changes which the city underwent in the mid-19th-early 20th centuries in conjunction with developments in the political, economic, scientific and technical spheres. The search for new trends in architecture came after the death of the classicism style, which had dominated the Russian Empire and the wider world for centuries. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the practice of mixing eclectic architectural styles began to emerge, leading to an era of amazing stylistic improvisations.

During the final decades of Romanov reign, many educational institutions for architects and engineers were opened. As a result, the face of numerous Russian cities began to change rapidly. Art Nouveau - a new, modern trend that absorbed several preceding styles – had come to dominate the architectural scene.

Many Art Nouveau buildings can still be seen in central Khabarovsk. These include:

  • Takeuchi apartment building (5 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Esplanade Hotel (18 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Luhta apartment building (84 Komsomolskaya Street)
  • Zandau apartment building (34 Muravyov-Amursky Street)

Khabarovsk also has many Gothic buildings, a style distinguished by its elegance and attention to detail. Every element of Gothic architecture emphasize a vertical orientation, as seen in the massive walls and columns, round arches and wide windows which contrast with narrow towers, pointed peaks and lancet windows.

Khabarovsk’s Gothic architecture is best represented by the artillery warehouse buildings located at 16 Komsomolskaya Street. Another notable example is the Red Guard Headquarters (105 Komsomolskaya Street), which has been preserved in its original form. The complex consists of two identical two-story brick buildings with unusual motifs containing pseudo-gothic elements.

Also of note is the early 20th-century Treasury Building, a luxurious red brick structure with openwork balconies that exudes an architectural grace.

Khabarovsk also has many Soviet-era buildings which were mostly designed in the constructivism style. Characterized by their enormous size and grotesque shapes, they often occupy most of the block and dominate the surrounding space.

During your Khabarovsk excursion, be sure to appreciate its unique architectural heritage by going for a walk downtown .

Khabarovsk Attractions

Khabarovsk, Russia

The layout of Khabarovsk is very simple: its 3 main streets of Lenin, Muravyov-Amursky and Seryshev pass through the downtown area, while Ussuriysky and Amur Boulevards run perpendicular to them. A distinctive feature of Khabarovsk are its many hills, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes for your walk.

Begin your walking tour of Khabarovsk from the train station, where you can see the monument to Yerofey Khabarov, the famous explorer for whom the city is named. Nearby is a sculpture of a double-headed eagle, erected in memory of soldiers, officers and builders of the Far Eastern Railway. Moving from the station along Amur Boulevard you will reach the central market, just past which is Lenin Square. A spacious area with a granite fountain in the center, it is the main plaza of Khabarovsk and the site of the city’s Christmas and New Year celebrations. Next to the square is Dynamo Park, famous for its three ponds and Ferris wheel.

From Lenin Square, move along Muravyov-Amursky Street to reach Amur Embankment, passing most of Khabarovsk’s famous 19th-20th century buildings along the way. Descend to the embankment via two grand staircases or make a small detour onto Shevchenko Street, where you can follow the slope until you reach the embankment’s main stretch. Among other things, the area is home to the House of Officers and three museums.

As you move along the embankment through a park you will come across the city symbol of Khabarovsk, a building set on a steep cliff above the Amur River. It was at the foot of this cliff that the founders of a military post, the first semblance of civilization in the area, first landed.

After reaching the river and walking along Ussuriysky Boulevard to Turgenev Street, turn right to reach Glory Square. Here you will find another famous Khabarovsk landmark, Transfiguration Cathedral, along with a magnificent view of the Amur River and its dreamy islands. Glory Square concludes the main walking route of Khabarovsk, but from here you can reach any part of the city by public transport or taxi .

Khabarovsk Cultural Life

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk entertainment centers around its many theaters and museums. Visit Khabarovsk Museum of Local Lore to get a better glimpse of city and regional life. Children and adults alike will want to visit Fishes of Amur River Museum, an aquarium which is home to some 90 species of the underwater world. To catch the vibe of local artists, head to the Far Eastern Art Museum.

There are several theaters in Khabarovsk, each of which is worth visiting:

  • Khabarovsk Regional Puppet Theater;
  • Triad Pantomime Theater;
  • Khabarovsk Regional Philharmonic;
  • White Theater, and others.

In addition, Khabarovsk offers several concert halls, culture houses, cinemas and art institutions .

Khabarovsk Souvenirs

While the city’s souvenir selection is not as diverse as in other Russian cities, guests can still find something suited to their tastes on their tour to Khabarovsk. Amur River and the Sea of Japan offer an abundance of seafood that can be tasted on the spot or brought home in dried or smoked form. Yet it is the rich culture of the local indigenous peoples which provides the largest selection of national souvenirs.

If you’re looking for an original gift, traditional Nanai slippers are comfortable and warm. Sewn from leather or fabric and decorated in a bright, colorful style before being trimmed with fur, they make the perfect house shoes in winter. Traditional decorations include amulets which are made from animal bones, fur or fabrics and decorated with ribbons and colored beads.

Standard souvenirs like plates, magnets, mugs and flasks stamped with images of Khabarovsk or its coat of arms can be purchased in souvenir shops, which are mostly located downtown and at the airport and railway station.
