Cruising to Genoa: Your Guide to a Day in Port

Cruise passengers arriving into Port Genoa are gliding through waters steeped in history and mystery. Some of the world’s most notorious explorers hail from this hearty seaport city, including none other than Christopher Columbus himself. In fact, an 18th-century reconstruction of the house in which he grew up now hosts a museum just outside the city’s ancient 14th-century stone walls.

Genoa Port is the second-largest seaport in the Mediterranean and forms a semicircular enclave of water dotted day and night with massive cruise vessels and ferry boats. It also harbors the historical Porto Antico , from which sailors-of-old launched brave new journeys to undiscovered lands. The once-tattered waterfront near the original port now brims with energy and excitement, making it the perfect way to start a shore-day in seaside Italian town.

Where to Start: Porto Antico

Upon arrival into Genoa Port, make your way around to Porto Antico , a short walk from any of the cruise-shop docks. Since the city’s main attractions are within 10 or 20 minutes by foot, there’s plenty of time to first enjoy the cafes, small shops and cultural spots that have sprung up in the old port area since its remarkable revitalization in the past few decades. It’s now a favorite spot for locals to meet up on a Sunday afternoon for cappuccinos, ice cream, jogging and dog-walking.

It’s easy to spot the Lanterna Lighthouse

Strolling the seafront is like literally walking into a maritime landscape painting from the Renaissance era. The Lanterna lighthouse from 1543 still stands guard over the port, welcoming travelers from near and far. Pretty pastel cottages, villas and trattorias spill up and down the hillside, painting the city in nostalgic ochre and pink brushstrokes topped with tufts of terracotta tile. To deep-dive into the water-centric nature of Genoa, stop by the Maritime Museum to see scientific reconstructions of ships, maritime voyages and transatlantic migrations.

Without question, the main draw at Porto Antico is the sprawling modern aquarium, known locally as Acquario Di Genova. It’s the largest aquarium in Europe, housing at least 15,000 animals and 400-plus species, including rare Antarctic fish. The Great Blue Ship sailing vessel complements the museum with reconstructed tropical environments.

A Day in Genoa on Foot

One of the best things about a shore day in Genoa is that the main cultural and dining experiences are within easy walking distance of the Old Port. It’s also easy to catch a taxi, shuttle or bus from the waterfront up to the main plaza, Piazza de Ferrari, and make your way around from there. Here are some highlights of an afternoon or a full day onshore in Genoa.

  • Piazza de Ferrari  – If you do nothing more than snag a café table in the middle of Piazza de Ferrari and watch the city whirl and twirl in its daily rhythm, you will have truly experienced the heart of Genoa. Feed the pigeons at the massive bronze fountain, and then wrangle your way inside the Palace of the Doges or the Teatro Carlo Felice opera house for a jaw-dropping tour of its interior architecture.
  • Cattedrale di San Lorenzo – It’s hard to peel your eyes away from the stunning 12th-century white-marble and black-granite edifice of Cattedrale di San Lorenzo. Inside the complex, you’ll find Roman ruins along with pre-Christian sarcophagi and a famous artwork by Lazzaro Tavarone titled “The Martyrdom of St. Lawrence.” A curious piece of history, if you know to look for it, is an unexploded artillery shell from WWII, fired on the cathedral by the British in 1941.
  • Palazzos Ducale and Spinola – Not far from the Cathedral, history buffs can explore a wealth of museum treasures and cultural exhibitions at Palazzo Ducale . Art lovers get a full immersion in classic Italian and Flemish Renaissance paintings at the 16th-century Palazzo Spinola .

Mangia ! Mangia ! Dining in Genoa

As in just about any Italian city, it’s all about the food in Genoa. As they say at every bistro, trattoria, osteria , ristorante , pizzeria or enoteca : Mangia ! Mangia ! – Eat! Eat! Sharing food and wine is at the heart of every Italian gathering, and it’s an imperative to indulge with gusto.

In a port city like Genoa, seafood is woven into every fold of a well-laid table. One of the most authentic local places to embrace the sea-centric dining scene is in the old-mariner neighborhood of Boccadasse . Nostalgic old-school fishing boats bob offshore, and the narrow streets are chockful of unpretentious fish-laden cafes.

Another specialty of Genoa cuisine is basil-based Italian pesto sauce, which was birthed in Genoa as far back at the 1500s . The genuine original pesto features olive oil, fresh basil, pine nuts, pecorino , Parmegiano cheese and green garlic. If you’re down in the port area, pop into Cavour 21 , a casual trattoria serving pesto the traditional way: with pasta, fagiolini beens and potatoes. It’s also the perfect place to pick up some Ligurian focaccia flat breads.

To experience ancient osteria dining in Genoa, head over the Toe Drue , which dishes out Lugurian and Piedmontese fare, including dry-salt codfish or Peidmontese beef ravioli topped with Castelmagno cheese. Not far from Piazza della Vittoria , you’ll find a classy vintage-style family-run ristorante known as Le Cicale . It’s one of the few places to try local dishes such as ravioli with black truffle or grilled squid with lemon-crème potatoes.

Shopping and Souvenirs

Italy is known for high-end leather and trendy designer fashions as well as tiny alleys and winding cobblestones streets filled with jewelry and accessories. Genoa is certainly no exception.

Start with a blitz of shopping on Via XX Settembre , and then traverse the pedestrian-only roads zigzagging off from Piazza de Ferrari. Via Roma is where to go for well-known designer goods and shoes, and it’s paralleled by Galleria Mazzini , a collection of small boutique shops within a modern 19th-century glass structure. For an even more concentrated collection of local shops, find your way around the maze of tiny alleys in the affordable Maddalena district. When it’s time to pick up souvenirs or gifts to take home, check out the designer outlet bargains at Via Caffa .

Shore Excursions and Day Trips

When your cruise ships docks in Genoa, the concept of a “shore excursion” can easily mean heading to other nearby shores – and it’s well worth the effort. With some of Italy’s more picturesque villages and islands within a short glide down the Italian Riviera, you could find yourself in the heart of Portofino or the charming Cinque Terre . Your cruise ship can arrange excursions, or you can make your own itinerary through independent cruise-excursion companies such as Viator.

Private Day Trip to Cinque Terra

While plenty of group excursions offer affordable ways to experience the seaside villages collectively known as Cinque Terra, Viator goes an extra step by providing a private driver to take you and fellow travelers of your choosing to this charming UNESCO-listed region. You’ll get a personal pickup from your cruise ship and can focus on the things that you enjoy doing within the cobblestoned streets and beaches of Riomaggiore , Corniglia , Manarola , Vernazza and Monterosso .

Tour of Genoa and Day Trip to Portofino

A full-immersion way to explore the city of Genoa as well as experience the sparkling coastal community of Portofino is to combine them with a planned Viator tour. You’ll spend the morning walking the historic center of Genoa, have some free time for lunch, and then board a small boat to the yacht-laden upscale village of Portofino . Along the way, there’s a stop at the color-clad village of Santa Margherita Ligure on the Tigullio Gulf.

With any time to spare before re-boarding your cruise ship in Genoa, get a final glimpse of the city from the Bigo elevator. From 130 feet high, you’ll bid arrivederci to this sparkling city by the sea.

Genoa cruise port guide: What to do, see and eat

Genoa deserves your full attention on a cruise port of call. It’s consistently rated one of Europe’s most underrated cities so here’s why you should explore the Italian city.

Words by Sarah Rodrigues

Genoa cruise port has been a maritime force since the 11th century and has seen millions of tons of commercial goods pass through it in the intervening years.

In fact, the northwest Italian city – nicknamed ‘La Superba,’ (The Proud One) – is one of the largest port cities in the country.

What’s new and cool about Genoa cruise port?

It’s not only products and materials that come and go from these Ligurian waters: Genoa is also one of Italy’s busiest cruise ports, with over 1.3 million passengers disembarking here in 2019, and numbers now steadily edging back up to pre-pandemic levels.

The Italian port is equipped to handle a wide range of cruise ships, from small luxury vessels to large mega-cruisers. MSC Cruises , Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line , Celebrity Cruises and Princess Cruises have all featured Genoa on select Mediterranean cruises.

Genoa cruise terminal is set to become even more significant, with the announcement that a new breakwater dam is being built, allowing even larger ships to enter Genoa port. This new dam, resting on a seabed at a depth of 50 metres, will also see the eastern and western entrances widened to 300 metres and 400 metres respectively.

How to get from Genoa cruise port to the city centre

Fortunately for the cruiser, many of Genoa’s key sites are located immediately around the port area (plus the airport is only a 15-minute taxi ride away), so there is still plenty to see for those who want only a brief exploration before jumping back onboard.

However, delve deeper into the town’s narrow alleyways and gracious piazzas and there are even more treasures to be discovered – and while there’s the option to hail a taxi or jump on a shuttle bus from Genoa cruise terminal, it’s only a five to 10-minute walk into the downtown area, which allows you to more fully immerse yourself in the city from the outset.

What to see and do from Genoa cruise port

Renzo piano and the port area.

The globally acclaimed ‘starchitect,’ Renzo Piano, was born in Genoa in 1937 and, as a child, spent his weekends in the port area with his father, a builder. Passionate about the city of his birth, he has left his mark throughout Genoa, but the port brings three of his creations closely together: The Aquarium, Il Bigo and The Biosphere.

The Aquarium was opened in 1992 and designed by Piano to meld effortlessly with its surroundings; its funnels and portholes giving it a ship-like appearance. Inside, gaze through huge glass panes at the eerie gliding of deep sea creatures [below, right].

Additions to the original structure have been made since its opening, including a cetacean pavilion of seven floors, which rises just three metres above sea level – a design coup reflecting Piano’s belief that views of the city from the water should remain unobstructed.

Il Bigo is inspired by loading cranes of the past and, with its waterfront position, is a typically structural Piano design, comprising eight diagonally vertiginous arms which take visitors on two slow rotations for panoramic views over the city and its surroundings.

Nearby, The Biosphere is a bubble of glass and steel; its 20 m diameter frame a hothouse of lush tropical plants and exotic fauna.

Genoa cruise port street

Explore the botteghe storiche

Scattered throughout the city’s historical centre is a collection of botteghe storich e – historical shops – which have to meet stringent guidelines to qualify as such. Tucked away in the caruggi – the narrow laneways lined by tall houses – these ancient stores are tiny treasure troves of craftsmanship and skill.

You’re unlikely to be able to visit them all on a short stop at Genoa cruise terminal but, depending on your interests, you could follow an independent ‘themed’ stroll, taking in a handful of these unique premises and their enticing wares, which range from glassware, cork products and silver, to silk ties, shoes and – wait for it – tripe.

Take a trip on the Ascensore Castello D’Albertis-Montegalletto

Is it a train? Is it an elevator? This petite ascensore (it can carry up to 23 passengers at a time) is the only one in the world to travel horizontally before making a bizarre and Potter-esque switch to a vertical climb.

It departs from Via Balbi, close to Genoa’s main railway station, and represents a feat of ingenious engineering: it was devised in 1929 to circumvent the issue of getting around the harsh environmental realities of a city built with just six miles between shore and mountains.

Visit Castello d’Albertis-Montegalletto

Here, you’ll find the Museo delle Culture del Mondo (Museum of World Cultures). It was once the residence of seafarer Enrico Alberto d’Albertis and is crammed with ‘souvenirs’ (artefacts with, through a modern lens, uncomfortably colonialist overtones) collected on his travels through The Americas, Oceania and Africa .

As well as exploring, d’Albertis enjoyed crafting sundials (several are housed here) and taking photos, of which hundreds are on display. There’s also a Giulio Monteverde-sculpted Christopher Columbus on the terrace, from which the views of the harbour are spectacular.

Genoa cathedral interior

Visit the Genoa Cathedral (La Cattedrale di San Lorenzo)

As one of the city’s landmark attractions, the cathedral [above, left] is an obvious must-see while calling at Genoa cruise terminal – but be sure to take your time over it, as there is more to its intricate, striped facade than immediately meets the eye.

Local legend has it that, around 300 years after its consecration, a sculptor, bereft of his beloved dog, added a canine image to the exterior. Find it, and true love will be yours; fail to spot it and … well, maybe you’ll want to give Valentine’s Day a wide berth.

The cathedral’s interior is equally fascinating, with frescoes and other ornate design details. Entry is free.

Admire The Palace of Saint George (Palazzo San Giorgio)

This striking building goes under the radar of many visitors to Genoa, but it has a lovely facade and and fascinating history, including a stint as a prison.

Built in 1260, it’s where Marco Polo wrote (by way of narration to a fellow inmate) his memoirs, Il Milione, while incarcerated after his capture in the Battle of Curzola. The debts that this war saddled the city with led to a decision to reinvent the building as The Bank of Saint George, which was operational until the late 18th century. Only the intervention of the Genovese saved it from destruction in the 1830s, and it’s been restored several times since.

Stroll along Via Garibaldi

Architecturally stunning, and flanked on either side by lush gardens, imposing buildings and grand palaces, Via Garibaldi is one of Genoa’s most impressive thoroughfares.

The facades and interiors of the buildings recall the city’s glorious past as one of Italy’s most significant mercantile centres – which is a factor in its UNESCO World Heritage Site status, held since 2006.

The street houses an important museum complex, comprised of three Genovese palaces, and housing such treasures as original artworks by Caravaggio.

pesto sauce

What to eat in Genoa?

How do you usually eat your focaccia? A lunchtime sandwich, filled with cold meats and cheeses? Flip that idea – quite literally – when you’re in Genoa.

Here, you eat this classic Italian bread upside down, so that your tastebuds get all of the saltiness and oiliness of its topping – a sensation that forms a decadent contrast with the milky sweetness of the cappuccini with which it’s traditionally enjoyed in this part of Italy, where it comes served in strips for dunking purposes.

Pesto Genovese is another must-try – Genoa is the birthplace of this famous basil-based sauce. It’s typically served with trofie pasta and features fresh basil, pine nuts, garlic, Parmesan cheese and extra-virgin olive oil.

Don’t miss out on Farinata, a chickpea flour pancake that’s crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, usually seasoned with black pepper and rosemary.

Seafood plays a prominent role in Genoese cuisine, so look out for such dishes as Acciughe al Verde, which features marinated anchovies served with a tangy green sauce made from garlic, parsley, and vinegar.

For a heartier meal, try Cappon Magro, a layered seafood and vegetable salad often served on special occasions, or Minestrone alla Genovese, a vegetable soup rich in flavour and history.

Make sure to explore the local markets and taste fresh catches from the Mediterranean prepared with care and expertise that showcase the city’s close connection to the sea.

Thirsty? Wash your food down with such local Ligurian white wines as Vermentino or Pigato.

Port Genova (locode ITGOA) is currently ranked Mediterranean's second-largest seaport (after Marseille France ).

In Genova are registered all vessels of the cruise shipping companies (both Carnival Corporation -owned subsidiaries) Costa and AIDA , as Italy is the preferable flag-state for Costa Group (their managing company).

Fincantieri (one of the world's largest shipbuilding companies ) owns the merchant shipbuilding yards Monfalcone , Marghera ( Venice ), Sestri Ponente (Genoa), Ancona , Castellammare di Stabia (near Naples ) and Palermo (Sicily) . The company also owns the naval shipyards Riva Trigoso (Genoa) and Muggiano ( La Spezia ).

Genova port's main ferry shipping destinations in Mediterranean Sea (both cargo and passengers) are Sicily Island (Italy), Sardinia Island (Italy), Corsica Island (France), Barcelona (Spain) and also Canary Islands (Spain). Genova is Italy's busiest cargo ship port by cargo tonnage. The port is also famous with its dismantling (shipbreaking) station where the ominous Costa Concordia ship wreckage was dismantled. The port is also one of the country's still profiting shipbuilding yards serving the yacht construction market, yacht and boat maintenance, navy shipyards.

Besides its containership and passenger (ferry and cruise) terminals, shipyards and various ship handling facilities, Genoa port also has several sailboat and yacht marinas. The list of the marinas includes - Exhibition Centre (Fiera di Genova, capacity 305 berths), Duca degli Abruzzi (capacity 350 berths), Molo Vecchio (old harbor, capacity 160 berths, max LOA length 150 m), Porto Antico (capacity 280 berths), Genova Aeroporto (for mega yachts, capacity 500 berths, max LOA length 90 m) and Fascia di Rispetto di Pra (capacity 1000 berths).

On January 31, 2019, Italian police announced the seizure of 2+ tons of pure cocaine (from Colombia) - Italy's largest drug bust since 1993. The drugs (street value ~EUR 500 million / ~USD 574M) were discovered in a TEU-container and packed into 60 bags. The unit was imported from South America and destined for Barcelona. The drugs belonged to several drug-trafficking organizations part of "Gulf Clan" (accounting for ~70% of Colombia's total cocaine export). Reportedly, the police replaced total 1801 packets of cocaine with salt, then sent the cargo on its way in a ploy to hold the drug runners. A 59-year-old Spanish man was arrested in Barcelona when he tried to collect the shipment.

Genoa cruise port

On March 23, 2013, here was christened MSC Preziosa . In the period April 29 - May 17, the Grand Celebration ship (operated by Iberocruceros, owned by Costa Group) was docked in Genoa for planned refurbishment and maintenance. Dry-dock works were performed at the shipyard San Giorgio del Porto - a major shipyard for repairs and refitting.

On November 14, 2013, the company Costa Crociere SpA announced its plans to open in late spring 2014 new offices in Genoa. The new office space is for about 190 employees. It is located on the 1st floor of the Carmonte office building (Piazza Piccapietra), neighboring with the company's Palazzo Costa headquarters. Genoa has been the company's hometown since the 1950s. The new offices became workplace for Costa employees that previously worked at Via De Marini and handled all the commercial and tour operations for Costa cruise passengers.

On June 30, 2014, the Italian Cabinet authorized the transportation (towing) of the salvaged Costa Concordia . The wreckage was towed from Giglio Island (the ship's sinking accident site) to Genoa for dismantling and recycling, The Concordia ship’s last voyage was provided by the salvage company Titan Micoperi. On July 23, 2014, at ~11 am started the towing of the wreckage towards Genoa. The ship moved at an avrg speed of 2,3 mph (3,7 kph) arriving in Genoa 4 days later (on July 27).

On November 7, 2014, here was christened the Costa Diadema . The new ship left Trieste on November 1. The maiden voyage to Genoa also visited Dubrovnik (Croatia), Corfù (Greece), Malta and Naples . The ship's inaugural cruise departed from Savona (on Nov 8).

In 2016, the port reported a record year with handled over 1 million cruise tourists. In 2016, Stazioni Marittime cruise terminals were upgraded with new equipment, including new gangways at Ponte Doria. The investment was ~EUR 2,2 million.

Since 2018, Port Genoa provides shore-power capabilities. The shore-to-ship electrical power suply technology (by Nidec Corporation, Japan) enables docked vessels to receive electricity from the city's power grid. From the berth, vessels can plug-in directly to the grid which allows full onboard operations without using the diesel engines/generators. The Japanese company has installed such systems in the USA ports Los Angeles CA , San Francisco CA , Juneau AK , as well as in other European ports ( Goteborg Sweden , Travemunde Germany , Livorno Italy ).

On July 7, 2018, during Costa Cruises' 70th-anniversary celebrations in Genoa (Costa Zena Festival) was constructed a huge waterslide (length 340 m/1115 ft) designed to break Guinness World Record for "longest slid in 1 hour". The slide was installed on Via XX Settembre street and helped to establish the world's new record of 775 km (481,6 mi) sliding in 1 hour. Another world record broken was for longest bunting string - 2070 maritime signal flags were connected into 2 km long line along the festival's areas. At Old Port and Piazza Caricamento were performed live 60 performers (street musicians, dancers, artists, acrobats), 29 singers, DJs, comedians. Piazza de Ferrari had for kids games, workshops and parties with mascots. The evening concert (at 8.30 pm) was on Radio 105 stage (opposite Piazza delle Feste) and included performances by popular Italian singers and bands.

For season 2019, the cruise port expects 30% increase in passengers (to 1,3 million), most of whom (around 750,000) embarking (homeport).

In July-August 2023 was completed the Cesare Imperiale Viaduct's retrofitting project. The waterfront promenade is in the Stazioni Marittime Terminal's area. The 300-m/ 980-ft long viaduct/road bridge (connecting Ponte dei Mille with Ponte Andrea Doria) is annually used by 1+ million cruise tourists.

Ponte dei Mille and Ponte Andrea Doria cruise terminals (Genoa)

Port Genoa's first cruise terminal is Ponte dei Mille (1930-opened). The facility was upgraded in 1991 and used to be the most advanced passenger terminal regarding technologies. It has capacity to handle 3x vessels simultaneously. The second cruise terminal (Ponte Andrea Doria) can berth 2x liners at a time.

The Maritime Station is close to downtown (old town), but in an industrial area, so it is better to use a taxi. In 2016, Stazioni Marittime's investments were EUR 2,2 million. Part of the new equipment were Ponte Doria Terminal's new gangways.

In July 2022 were annou nced plans to equip Stazioni Marittime's terminals with an additional pier (alongside Ponte Dei Mille West) with capacity to berth the world's biggest passenger liners (LOA length 330 m / 1083 ft)).

The project followed recent dredging works (for deepening the waterway) and included the existing quay's extension (from 290 to 380 m / 1247 ft), construction of a new boarding terrace and terminal building, and building a new quay line (at Calata Santa Limbania) alongside the former grain silos Hennebique (200 m long building). The quay (to be enhanced by 12 m in width) will serve the adjacent cruise terminal and will also provide mooring for leisure boats during no-ship days.

(NEW) Genoa Ponte Parodi cruise terminal

Ponte Parodi terminal is currently under construction. Its quay was once used for grain traffic (silos).

The Ponte Parodi cruise terminal project involves redesigning a 23000 m2 (247600 ft2) waterfront area part of the former industrial area named Ponte Parodi.

The new pier complex was designed by De Carlo and features a series of multi-functional spaces to be used for exhibitions and various commercial purposes on the pier. These buildings are enclosed in large glass surfaces and adjacent to a restaurant, cafes and pubs, a disco, gyms, swimming pools.

Savona Cruise Port

Italy 0 Comments 4481 Views

Savona is the base port of the Costa Crociere. Most of the Mediterranean cruises of this cruise giant start from here. Savona is a small port city with a population of 70,000 inhabitants. The cruise terminal in Savona is very conveniently located - the city center can be reached on foot in 10 minutes, to the railway station 30 minutes on foot. The main inconvenience of this cruise terminal is that there is no international airport in Savona, so you will have to fly to neighboring cities - Genoa (50 km) or Milan (170 km) and then travel by land.

Despite the fact that Genoa is geographically closer, it will most likely be more convenient and cheaper for you to fly to Milan, since there are many more flights there.

How to get from Milan airport to Savona cruise terminal

Arriving at one of the airports in Milan, you will need to get to the central railway station of Milan.

  • From Malpensa Airport, this can be done by local train (website , cost 13 euros, travel time 40 minutes) or bus (  cost 10 euros, travel time 1 hour)
  • From Bergamo Airport, this can be done by bus carriers ( http://www.terravision.eu , http://autostradale.it , http://orioshuttle.com/ cost from 5 euros)
  • From Linate Airport, this can be done by bus carriers ( StarFly , ATM , cost from 5 euros)

Next, you will need to take a direct train to Savona, which runs about 5 times a day. The ticket price at the box office is 19-25 euros, but if you take it in advance (2-4 months in advance) on the website http://www.trenitalia.com , you can buy non-refundable cheap tickets for 9 euros.

Once you reach the Savona railway station, you will only have to drive to the cruise terminal. It can be done:

  • by taxi for 15 euros
  • on a paid Costa shuttle for 5 euros
  • walk for free in 25-30 minutes

As you can see, the road from Milan airport to the Savona cruise port is not the easiest. You can get by with fewer transfers only by taking a cruise company transfer (information below), or by taxi (about 300 euros). Also keep in mind that the road and transfers take a lot of time, so we recommend that you arrive in Milan the day before the cruise. On the day of the cruise, you can only fly if you have booked a direct transfer from the cruise company. In other cases, it is better not to take risks and arrive in advance.

How to get from the port of Savona to Milan airport

The sequence of your actions will be the reverse of what we described above. The only point is to buy tickets for the Savona - Milan train in advance via the Internet, this will allow you to get normal seats. At the end of the cruise in Savona, there will be a lot of people who want to get to Milan, so people who take tickets on a first-come, first-served basis sometimes go standing up. To avoid this, take care of tickets in advance. If you still have a lot of time before your flight from Milan, you can walk around Savona, leaving your luggage in the luggage room at Savona Station. The price of this service is 5 euros for one piece of baggage weighing up to 20 kg

How to get from Genoa Airport to Savona Cruise Terminal

The first step is to get from Genoa Airport to Genoa Central Station. This can be done with Volabus buses. They run from 6 am to midnight. Travel time will be about half an hour, and the fare will be 6 euros. You can also take a taxi.

After that, you can take the train to Savona. They run every 20 minutes, travel time is from 30 minutes to an hour (depending on the train class). Price from 4.10 euros.

Upon arrival in Savona, you can take a taxi to the cruise terminal or walk to it. Also, a paid Costa bus runs between the station and the terminal (5 euros)

Costa Cruise Company Transfers to Savona Port

As we already wrote - Savona is the base port of the Costa Crociere company, so if you go on a cruise from Savona, then most likely with the Costa company. Costa Crociere offers paid transfers from the airports and railway stations of Milan, Genoa and Nice to the terminal in Savona and back. If in your case such a transfer is available, then it is probably worth using it. It will not be the cheapest way, but definitely the most convenient, without transfers. Cruise line transfers must be booked in advance. You can book a transfer from the airport to the port when purchasing a cruise, and a return transfer can be booked directly on the ship.

Estimated cost of transfer from Malpensa airport to Savona terminal - 27 euros. The duration of the trip is 2.5-3 hours. If you are arriving at Bergamo and/or Linate airports, then you will need to first get to Milan Central Station and take a transfer from there.

Tip: if you arrive at Malpensa Airport in the evening the day before the cruise, perhaps the most convenient and cheapest way would be to spend the night in the airport area and leave in the morning with a cruise company transfer. This will allow you to save on tickets to Milan and expensive Milan hotels.

Parking at the port of Savona

Parking at the Savona Cruise Terminal is guarded but open. The cost of parking for 2015 is 12 euros per day. A parking space must be reserved in advance. Reservations can be made by calling the number listed on the website www.parkingsavona.com . You give the car to the staff who take it to the parking lot and return the keys to you after the end of your cruise.

Hello everyone

My questions:

1.Is there a bus or train?

2. How often do they come?

3. How long does it take and whats the cost?

4. How much for a taxi?

5.Any recommendations for a cheap shuttle service

I'd appreciate any info anyone has to share!

' class=

Should be €15 or so for the 7 km. http://www.cooptaxige.it/it_tariffe.html

If you want to book a private hire car instead, see http://www.airport.genova.it/v2/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=69&Itemid=138

Thanks for your help.Taxi is probably thequickest and safest as I am travelling alone.

' class=

have been to Genoa airport to catch ship from port before and the airport is fine - plenty of taxis outside; all pretty normal looking! I was also on my own last time but went with coach transfer. However it only took about 20/30 mins so is not far. I will be going on my own again in May and have decided just to get a taxi when there. I reckon probably about 20 Euro to include luggage and the extra to take you to the actual ship would be about right (give or take a few euros and the price of petrol once they bomb Libya's oil wells!!!). Hope this helps.

' class=

hello Carol

I asked at the airport about a taxi and they reckoned it would be about 40-50 euros. So I ended up catching the bus (clearly signposted outside the airport) to Piazza Prinicipe train station - 6 euros. However I then had to get a taxi to the ship which was about 25 euros. It was quite straightforward but not sure it was worth it to save 10 euros. I shared a taxi back with another passenger so that was easier. Hope this helps.

Thank you,I had a look on the web site for taxi I was quite shocked as it is only about 25 kilometres seems pretty expensive but thank you for the advice will get one from the airport.

Regards Carol

The distance is only around seven km, though at certain times of day a very slightly longer route may be faster. The fares quoted above involve, I suspect, rather 'enterprising' taxi drivers.

The officlal metered rates appear on http://www.cooptaxige.it/it_tariffe.html (clcik the British flag, though as these are dated 2009 a slight rise may have happened since. Either insist on the meter, or agree a reasonable price first.

may be, but all passengers were quoted around the same rate as I found when I got on ship. So obviously, they see us coming and up the rate. However, when all taxi drivers are quoting the same, not a lot you can do is there? and I did use a metered taxi. Might be something for Genoa authorities/tourist board to look into?

Yes, I agree with you.

Writing to your cruise line might also help, as pressure from them would be more effective. I note that Costa, for example, does not discuss taxi fares in its information in English. But in Italian, it says the taxi fare from the airport is around €22, and from Piazza Principe around €12.

Ponte dei Mille - 16126 Genova (GE) - Italy Tel. +39 010 0898335 [email protected] www.stazionimarittimegenova.com

Stazioni Marittime S.p.A was established in 1987 to plan, construct and operate the passenger terminals in the Port of Genoa.

The company manages five passengers terminals: two purpose-built terminals at Ponte dei Mille and Ponte Andrea Doria are dedicated to cruise traffic, whilst three terminals, at Calata Chiappella, Ponte Caracciolo and Ponte Colombo, are primarily used for ferry traffic. In total, the sites cover approximately 290,000 sqm of surface area, offering 12 berths, along 3000 metres of quays.

The sizable investments made over the years by both the Port Authority and the terminal operator to extend and expand the dock area, optimise direct road links, refurbish terminal buildings and construct new purpose-built infrastructure, have firmly established Genoa as a leading Mediterranean cruise and ferry hub.

Access to the terminals is easy as the passenger port is located just 5 km from Genova City Airport and 200 m from the mainline railway station, with direct on-site road links to the motorway network. All Stazioni Marittime-managed terminals are at the forefront of safety and security measures, adhering to all recent strict IMO and EU regulations.

CRUISES Genoa is today a top destination port for cruise ships offering itineraries across the Western Mediterranean, and homeport to the leading international cruise lines. Genoa is also a port of departure for repositioning cruises to and from the Americas and Northern Europe.

The Ponte dei Mille Cruise Terminal covers over 16,000 square meters (including the embarkation terraces) on three levels connected by escalators and lifts. The terminal can accommodate two large cruise vessels and up to 10,000 passengers a day. Stazioni Marittime features a quay 340 m in length capable of handling the latest generation of post-Panamax cruiseships, and an additional berth of 290 metres in length where works are underway for new quay development which is to be extended up to 376 metres.

The Ponte Andrea Doria Cruise Terminal has a total surface area of approximately 11,000 square metres on two floors and features two berths of 300 metres in length which can host the last generation of ships in full safety, and handle up to 8000 passengers/day.

When cruises are cheaper than trains and planes

P lanes, trains and automobiles may be the obvious and often most cost-effective ways to get from A to B but, surprisingly, cruise ships can be, too.

Repositioning sailings are the unsung bargains of the cruise world, where canny travellers can often pick up voyages at vastly reduced rates – and give more orthodox forms of transport a run for their money.

The key to finding such a deal comes from studying cruise schedules for sailings – some of which may be just one or two nights – that go directly from one place to another.

While low-cost flights are generally accepted as the cheapest way to travel internationally, global airfares are on the rise – and by the time you pile on charges for luggage, food and drink and the cost of travelling from the airport to the city centre – where cruise ships invariably dock – taking the sea-going route can emerge as the unlikely winner (and you’ll arrive in considerably more style).

It can even work for travelling to different parts of the UK, though options tend to be restricted to Fred Olsen Cruise Lines when it repositions ships on overnight voyages between the likes of Southampton and Newcastle, Rosyth or other ports further north.

Italy to Spain from £54

For city-hopping stays in and around Europe, MSC Cruises is the one to watch, as it enables customers to book many of its Mediterranean cruises on a port-to-port basis, rather than taking the entire voyage.

For instance, travellers can book one-nighters between Genoa and Barcelona or Genoa and Marseilles for as little as £54pp, while an overnight sailing between Valencia and Marseilles is £72pp, with these prices obviously including meals. The £54 figure is based on an October 11 departure. For a flight from Genoa to Barcelona on the same date, Skyscanner (skyscanner.net) quotes a service with ITA Airways for £111.99pp, including luggage.

Tony Andrews, the managing director of travel agency cruise.co.uk, says: “MSC doesn’t talk about this enough, as these one-nighters are a great way for people to have a city-break-style experience with a cruise as part of it. It’s a really interesting way to do it.”

The leisurely way to cross the pond

Transatlantic crossings are another potential area to pick up a sea-going bargain, but it’s a question of waiting until the price is right, as rates continually fluctuate.

Many lines offer transatlantic repositionings in spring and autumn, while Cunard runs the only regular crossings between Southampton and New York on its liner Queen Mary 2.

On one occasion some years ago, when prices dropped to just a few hundred pounds, I was sailing from Southampton on the QM2 and met a passenger who had opted to do the same purely because the rates were so much cheaper than flying and he wasn’t in a rush (the crossing takes a week).

Cunard’s prices have since risen overall, but there are still reduced rates on some departures that make this tactic worth pursuing if you fancy a more leisurely way to cross the pond.

Alison Earnshaw, the managing director of online agencies Cruise 118 and Six Star Cruises, says that when rates drop to £600 or £700, taking the ocean route becomes more cost-effective as transatlantic flights have become so expensive.

Another plus is the lack of luggage restrictions, because on cruises you can famously take as much as will fit in your cabin.

“We’ve had people booking to sail to see family in the States with lots of luggage that they’re taking out for them, and then flying back lighter,” she explains. “Alternatively, we’ve had customers who’ve flown to New York for the shopping and sail back as they can bring as much as they want.”

Swap Blighty for Barbados – for £1,129

The Caribbean is another region that comes up trumps for value, with P&O Cruises offering a two-week repositioning voyage from Southampton to Barbados (with stops in Antigua, St Kitts and St Lucia) from £1,129. This price is for an October 18 departure, and includes the flight back to Britain.

A return fare to Barbados with British Airways (including luggage) during the same period is £733pp. Inter-island flights with Caribbean Airlines (caribbean-airlines.com) between Barbados and other islands in this itinerary amount to approximately £714pp. Add in hotel stays and it’s clear just how much you can save by taking to the water.

Going global

Miles Morgan, the founder of Miles Morgan Travel, cited world cruises as another option for good-value deals, when cruise companies carve itineraries into segments if they haven’t been selling well, enabling customers to buy legs such as Sydney to Singapore.

“You need to look at sailings a few months in advance, as this is when they tend to be carved up,” he says. “So look now for autumn sailings and at Christmas for the spring. There might be nothing going or you might do well.”

I soon found a 17-night sector of a world cruise on Cunard’s Queen Victoria, departing Singapore on March 26 and arriving in Cape Town on April 12. It calls at Sri Lanka, Mauritius and Port Elizabeth in South Africa. From £1,099pp, not including flights, it works out at £64pp a night – about the same as a Travelodge.

Flights for the same routing between Singapore and Cape Town for the same time period via Skyscanner amount to approximately £1,150pp, including luggage. Another win for the cruise.
