View of the Big Sur coastline from Bixby Creek Bridge, one of the best girls trip ideas

Take a road trip through Big Sur to witness the California coast at its finest. Wander through the storybook town of Carmel , hike coastal bluff trails , and take in all the scenic viewpoints . Take a photo at the famous Bixby Creek Bridge , and discover a hidden calla lily valley on the side of the road. When you’re ready for a break from all the driving, kick it back at a charming Carmel inn and catch a beautiful California sunset on the beach .

Historic buildings lining a street in Charleston, a great city for a girls trip

3. Charleston, South Carolina

Best for:  Southern charm Where to stay:  The Spectator

Charleston is a picturesque city marked by its Southern charm . Think cobblestone streets and colorful architecture with a side of Southern hospitality . For a Charleston girls trip, consider booking yourselves a day at the Woodhouse Day Spa for ultimate relaxation. Get lost wandering the streets and soaking up the town’s unique character. Spend an afternoon browsing the boutiques on King Street , and finish off your shopping spree at the historic City Market . Take photos on Rainbow Row , a stretch of colorful homes perfect for the ‘gram . Finally, exercise your inner foodie and eat your way through the many quality restaurants in town.

The silhouette of a sailboat against an orange-red sunset in Key West, a great destination for girls trips

4. Key West, Florida

Best for: easy-gping tropical getaway Where to stay:  Nyah

Key West lies at the tip of the Florida Keys , a long stretch of islands surrounded by Caribbean blue water . A girls trip to Key West can be a wild party or a relaxing tropical getaway — or a little bit of both! Head over to Duval Street for 24-hour Mardi Gras vibes, or kick it back with a beautiful sunset cruise . While there are prettier beaches in other parts of the Keys, you could enjoy the best of Key West beaches from underwater on a snorkel tour . Make sure to eat all the seafood (conch fritters are a must!) and key lime pie , preferably with a pina colada in hand at all times.

The Las Vegas sign set against a bright blue sky, one of the best places for a girls trip

5. Las Vegas, Nevada

Best for:  partying it up Where to stay:  Encore at Wynn

We couldn’t not include the party capital of the country on this list of girls trip ideas! Las Vegas is the ultimate destination for a wild bachelorette party or college roommate reunion . Indulge in a room with a view right on The Strip , where you’ll find luxury hotels that stretch on for blocks on end. Test your luck in the casino , see a famous night show , dine in posh restaurants and dance your heart out at a DJ-fueled pool party . Get out of town with a quick trip to Red Rock Canyon or the quirky Seven Magic Mountains .

The Miami skyline seen from above, one of the best places to visit with your girlfriends

6. Miami, Florida

Best for: hot girl summer Where to stay: EAST Hotel in Brickell or The Confidante in South Beach

Miami has all the necessary components for a perfect girls trip: beautiful beaches , chic hotels , cool rooftop bars , and perfect weather year-round. You can either stay on mainland Miami or closer to the beaches in Miami Beach. Regardless of where you stay, there’s a lot to see in both areas. Explore beach clubs like Nikki Beach and snap photos in front of the Art Deco buildings in South Beach . Over on the mainland, you’ll find the Wynwood Arts District with its endless art murals , hip cafes , and fun outdoor bars . Make sure to swing by Calle Ocho for the best Cuban food you’ll ever have and to get a taste of Miami’s unique Latino flare .

The neon lights of Nashville's Honky Tonk Row, a fun girls getaway destination

7. Nashville, Tennessee

Best for: Dancing, singing and drinking Where to stay: Kimpton Aertson Hotel

If wearing funky cowgirl boots and dancing the night away to honky-tonk sounds like a good time, then consider Nashville for your next girls trip. I’ll admit it: The weekend I spent in Nashville with my best girlfriends from college was kind of a blur — in the best kind of way, ha! Nashville, or Music City , is a hotbed of country music and Southern comfort food . It’s home to the Grand Ole Opry , which hosted country music legends like Johnny Cash and Reba McIntire. You’ll find live music every day of the week at the honky-tonks and dive bars at The District , specifically Honky Tonk Row , where you must visit Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge . Nashville has such a fun energy that you’ll want to sing, dance, eat, and drink your days away.

Three men walking down a street in New Orleans, including one wearing a backwards Barney suit. New Orleans is one a great girls weekend getaway trip.

8. New Orleans, Louisiana

Best for: party animals & foodies Where to stay:  Ace Hotel

Home to the world-famous Mardi Gras festival, New Orleans is definitely a fun destination for a girls trip. Join in on the debauchery on Bourbon Street , hands-down one of the wildest parties I’ve ever experienced. If you’re not here for the party, at least walk through the street once to see what I mean! Give in to the city’s rich history of voodoo and the supernatural and have your fortune told . Step back in time in the French Quarter . Discover New Orleans’ rich cuisine through iconic dishes like po-boys, red beans, gumbo and jambalaya. Whatever you do, don’t miss out on the beignets at longstanding institution Café du Monde .

The Empire State building set against the rest of NYC's skyline. New York is an awesome destination for a girls weekend trip

9. New York, New York

Best for: big city lovers Where to stay:  Arlo NoMad

New York is the perfect city for any kind of trip — especially a girls weekend getaway. Skip the tourist traps known as Times Square and the Empire State Building and head straight to brunch in the West Village . Wander the charming streets and embody Carrie from Sex and the City (her brownstone is probably nearby). Cafe-hop and shop in SoHo before grabbing fresh dumplings in Chinatown . Cross the Brooklyn Bridge right before sunset and watch the day end at Brooklyn Bridge Park (preferably with a bottle of wine). Have a picnic in Central Park , where you’ll find all the locals on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

A woman biking down a road lined with palm trees next to the ocean in Palm Beach, one of the best destinations for girls trips in the U.S.

10. Palm Beach, Florida

Best for:  tropical luxury Where to stay: The Colony

Think 47 miles of Caribean blue coastline : that’s the Palm Beaches. Find yourselves a tropical-chic hotel near the beach and soak in all the sunshine you can get. Don your best bikinis and resort wear, shop at local boutiques on Worth Avenue and enjoy brunch in sunny outdoor cafes . This is a perfect destination for the colder months since winter is virtually nonexistent here.

A series of tall palm trees set against desert landscape featuring earthy mountains in Palm Springs, a hotspot for girls getaways

11. Palm Springs, California

Best for:  celeb spotting Where to stay: The Saguaro

This slice of California desert has become one of the hottest girls trip destinations in recent years. The weather is ideal for a visit year-round, so make sure to book yourselves a hotel with a pool . Several of the hotel pools are open to the public, by the way, so it’s easy to explore beyond your own. Shop on El Paseo Drive , stumble upon a pool party , ride the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and indulge in pretty cocktails at happy hour . Try to spot a celeb while you’re there — odds are you’ll find someone famous on a much-needed getaway from LA.

A lighthouse on a seaside cliff in Portland, Maine, one of the best places to travel to with your girlfriends

12. Portland, Maine

Best for:  the lobster rolls Where to stay: The Press Hotel

Now here’s a perfect summer girls trip. Portland is one of the most charming cities on the East Coast. The sea views are just as spectacular as the seafood , and downtown Portland has its fair share of bars and restaurants for a fun night out. Eat as many lobster rolls as you can, visit the iconic Portland Head Lighthouse , and explore nearby islands in Casco Bay . EverCaribbean experienced New England charm ? This is the best place to see it.

A beach surrounded by mountains in Santa Barbara, a wonderful girls trip idea

13. Santa Barbara, California

Best for:  wining, dining & shopping Where to stay: Hotel Milo Santa Barbara

Welcome to The American Riviera, where you can start your day with a wine tasting tour and end it with a sunset cruise on the Pacific. Santa Barbara has more than 30 wineries on its Urban Wine Trail , where you can also shop, dine and hit the spa. Wander in and out of shops on State Street , and stop for a million and one photos at the bougainvillea-filled paseos like La Arcada . Swing by the Funk Zone in the evening for dinner, gallery hopping and more wine tasting.

A pink sunset over the ocean in San Diego, a great girls trip destination

14. San Diego, California

Best for: beach bumming Where to stay:  Pacific Terrace Hotel

A girls trip to San Diego features wine-tasting , seal spotting and beach time . Sound like a plan? I think so, too. Spend a day out on the water in Mission Bay , where you can rent a Duffy Boat, paddleboards or kayaks. Visit the famous La Jolla Coves to meet the local seals and sea lions , and hit one of the city’s many craft breweries . If you prefer wine, start at Bernardo Winery and hop to any of the other nearby wineries. Looking for a party? Hit up a boozy brunch spot in town.

A woman wearing a black bathing suit walking on rocks in the ocean in San Juan, Puerto Rico, a great girls trip destination

15. San Juan, Puerto Rico

Best for:  fun island vibes Where to stay: Caribe Hilton

The best thing about a girls trip to San Juan is that you feel like you get to leave the country without actually leaving the country. San Juan feels like a Caribbean getaway , yet you reap all the benefits of domestic travel: English is widely spoken, the currency is the same, and your cellphone will work. Wander through the incredibly charming and colorful streets of Old San Juan before catching a sunset on one of the many beautiful beaches nearby. If you’re up for the adventure, rent a car and leave the main tourist strip to find more of Puerto Rico’s natural wonders. Explore hidden waterfalls and hike in El Yunque , the only tropical rainforest in the U.S.

Drink and eat your way through the Night Market , walk among locals at Hoan Kiem Lake , and take a boat trip in nearby Ha Long Bay , one of the most beautiful natural wonders of Vietnam.

Ultimate Girl’s Guide to Ireland Travel

by Noelle Bertram | Apr 10, 2023

Ultimate Girl's Guide to Ireland Travel

Ireland is a place that captures the imagination: idyllic green pastures lead down to dramatic, rocky coastlines ~ & friendly locals offer a hearty welcome to travelers in bustling local pubs.  “Pub culture” really originated here, & whether you’re traveling solo, with family, or on an epic girl’s trip: Ireland is a very welcoming place.  If you like castles , pubs, gorgeous coastlines, road trips, Guiness, & Irish accents: then this is most definitely the country for you.  In this “ Ultimate Girl’s Guide to Ireland Travel ,” I’ll provide plenty of amazing ideas to create an amazing Irish itinerary.

Donegal, Ireland, Ultimate Girl's Guide to Ireland Travel, Girl Who Travels the World

Donegal is a beautiful town located on the northwestern coast of Ireland…& it’s one of countless photogenic spots in this green, green country.

Did you know that Ireland is the #3 safest country in the world , as of 2022??  This is according to the Global Peace Index , which tracks all kinds of crime stats for pretty much every country in the world.  The only two countries safer than Ireland are: Iceland & New Zealand.   And where does the United States rank? At a rather alarming #129; while Afghanistan sits at #163, as the least safe country in the world.

Map of Ireland + Renting a Car

On the map below, you’ll find many of Ireland’s top sights & great places to visit.  And even though you’ll need to get comfortable driving on the left side of the road: renting a car is one of the best things you can do here.  The country is relatively small, & having a car is the best way to get around.  If you want to visit places like the Blarney Stone, Cork, the Ring of Kerry & Cliffs of Moher, Galway, & some of Ireland’s most famous castles ~ then renting a car is really the way to go.

If you’re uncomfortable driving a stick shift, be sure to reserve in advance & specify that you need an automatic.

Ireland Travel Quick Facts

  • Ireland in One Word = Green.
  • Ireland in One More Word = Guiness.
  • Wi-Fi = Wi-Fi is readily available throughout most of Ireland, except in desolate country areas.
  • Global Peace Ranking = #3 out of 163 countries (U.S. is #129); Ireland is literally & statistically one of the safest countries in the world.
  • Hotels = Castle stays such as Ashford Castle & Adare Manor are pricey, but B&B’s are a great value for your money ~ you’ll find them ALL over the country, & they’re typically run by friendly locals who will gladly point you towards the best bars, restaurants, & local area sights.
  • Must-Do’s = Try out as many pubs in Dublin as your liver can handle, with the Temple Bar being a great place to start.  Visit the Book of Kells at Trinity College in Dublin.  Drink Guiness.  Travel the Ring Road in Kerry….or the lesser-known nearby Dingle Peninsula.  Pick up Christmas presents for Mom at the Waterford Crystal factory.  Kiss the Blarney Stone!  Stand on the edge of the Cliffs of Moher at sunset.  Visit beautiful Kylemore Abbey , north of Galway.  And if you’re a “ Game of Thrones ” fan, head to Northern Ireland ~ to places like the Dark Hedges…where you can get moody Winterfell-esque photos.
  • Is Ireland Good for Solo Travelers = YES.  Ireland is one of my top choices for solo travelers & female travelers ~ & in fact, I’d feel more comfortable recommending it to a solo traveler than Iceland, as Iceland can feel very desolate in spots.  Ireland has a friendlier, more approachable feel, & there’s no language barrier (if you’re English-speaking).  The only real issue is driving on the left side of the road, if you decide to rent a car.  It’s weird at first, but you get the hang of it!
  • How Hard is it to Drive on the Left Side of the Road?   I hit a lot of curbs in the beginning (oops), as the spatial awareness & feeling of driving on the left was just SO weird to me.  Be careful turning, as you may want to veer to the right (as you always do at home); you really need to be conscious & aware.  My friend was more adept at driving on the left ~ she somehow never hit a curb!  I think some people just adapt quicker & more easily.  NEVER drink & drive!!!  You’re already a bit handicapped by the whole driving on the left thing…don’t add intoxication to the mix.  Choose inns & hotels that are close to town, where you can either walk or taxi home.
  • What to Expect as a Female Traveler = Expect to meet lots of friendly locals at pubs.  The only place you *may* get hassled a bit is if you’re out late on the rowdy streets of Dublin …some college-type boys may try to hit on you or some such thing.  But in all the little towns around the country: this shouldn’t be an issue at ALL.  Our inn owners were always the epitome of hospitality, & eager to share knowledge & be of service.  If staying at hostels or B&B’s, even lucury hotels: you’ll never feel alone.
  • Would I Go Back = YES!!! And I definitely want to go to nearby Scotland too….

Photos of Great Ireland Destinations: Dublin

Almost every international visitor travels in through Dublin’s International Airport, & it’s well-worth spending at least 2-3 days in Dublin.  If you’re a city-lover: budget more time here, to visit sights such as the Book of Kells in Trinity College, the rollicking Temple Bar, or the Guiness Factory.  There’s no need to rent a car for your time in Dublin, as the city is quite walkable ~ unless you plan on visiting nearby sights such as Wicklow & its gorgeous surrounding area, which has beautiful lakes & hiking.

Photos of the Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs of Moher are an Ireland MUST .  This is truly one of the most glorious places in the country.  Whether you cut directly across from Dublin, or wind your way through southern Ireland before heading up to the Cliffs ~ they need to be on your itinerary.  You only need a day or two here…

Cliffs of Moher, Ultimate Girl's Guide to Ireland Travel, Girl Who Travels the World

The Cliffs of Moher are NOT to be missed: they’re truly one of Ireland top sights.

Cliffs of Moher, Ultimate Girl's Guide to Ireland Travel, Girl Who Travels the World

My friend & I managed to time our visit to be there at sunset, which is a magical time.

Cliffs of Moher, Ultimate Girl's Guide to Ireland Travel, Girl Who Travels the World

There’s a tower right at the top of the Cliffs, by the entrance, which makes for a lovely photo backdrop.

Two great places to stay by the Cliffs of Moher are Doolin Inn ($139+/night), a cozy B&B with free breakfast ~ & the Falls Hotel & Spa ($154+/night), a former 18th-century mansion with a pool & spa located in the town of Ennistymon.

Photos of Galway & Nearby Destinations

I liked Galway ….but didn’t love it.  Not the way I fell in love with Ashford Castle, or the coast of Southern Ireland & its many darling villages.  But it is an easy drive from Galway to Dublin, cutting right across the center of the country.  If it were me, I’d only budget 1-2 nights for Galway, & use it as a base to explore the area’s many castles…

Photos of Galway, Girl Who Travels the World

Galway’s downtown may not be quite as charming as Dublin’s ~ but there’s still a ton of character, & a ton of great pubs & restaurants.

Galway Waterfront, Photos of Galway, Girl Who Travels the World

But the cool thing about Galway is, it sits on a protected bay in the North Atlantic Ocean, not far from the Aran Islands.

Galway, Photos of Galway, Girl Who Travels the World

There are many ruins & castles right around Galway: such as the Merlin Castle, the Hall of the Red Earl, & Oranmore Castle.

Photos of Ashford Castle & Kylemore Abbey

Two amazing destinations just north of Galway are both incredibly photogenic: Ashford Castle ($798+/night) & Kylemore Abbey.  To this day, Ashford Castle is still one of the top five hotels I’ve ever stayed in ~ & for someone who’s spent over 300+ nights in hotels, this is saying something!  You’ll feel like aristocracy here, as you sip Irish coffees in their fabulous downstairs parlor bar, looking out over spectacular sunsets on Lough Corrib…which is a massive & beautiful body of water.

Or, head over to Kylemore Abbey , a beautiful Benedictine nunnery that is truly one of the most beautiful buildings in Ireland.  While you can’t stay here, you can visit their beautiful walled Victorian garden…

Photos of Southern Ireland

If you rent a car & head south of Dublin, you’ll hit a veritable treasure trove of amazing sights & cities: such as the Blarney Stone, beautifully green County Cork, the popular Waterford Crystal factory, Killarney, the gorgeous coastal town of Cobh ~ & on the south-west coast, you’ve got popular circuits like the Ring of Kerry….& the lesser-known, but no less beautiful drive around the Dingle Peninsula.

Cork is what you think of when you think of Ireland: rolling green hills for miles & cloudy skies.

Beautiful shots of Ireland. This is the land of my ancestors, and I’ve never had a chance to visit. Will hopefully be there later this summer. What did you think of the drive between Galway and Dublin? We’re just trying to figure out a good circuit that maximizes taking in the scenery. Thanks, Reginald

Noelle Bertram

Hi Reginald, thanks so much for your comment. I’m so glad you’ll finally get to visit your homeland ~ I think you’ll truly fall in love. So the drive between Galway & Dublin was the least memorable section of our circuit. It’s still very green, but there wasn’t much of interest or good places that we saw to stop…compared to Southern Ireland, where there are SO many landmarks, & such beautiful coastline. But you may find it necessary to do that drive if you’re hurrying back to Dublin to catch a flight, for example. Make sure you book at least a week trip there! Good luck planning : )

Betty

Thanks for sharing. I read many of your blog posts, your blog is very good. And I love these photos of Ireland.

Thanks, Betty!

Cassandra Smith

I was supposed to visit Ireland with a friend this spring, but she bailed due to financial issues. We’ve already bought our flights! On a scale of 1-10, how safe would you feel visiting Ireland as a solo female traveler? Thanks!!

Hi Cassandra, that’s a bummer about your friend! I actually get a lot of messages like that…I think people backing out of trips is unfortunately pretty common. But the good news is: I’d rate Ireland a 9.5 out of 10 in terms of safety/how safe I felt there as a female traveler. And the country’s actual safety statistics mirror that feeling: Ireland has ranked in the Top 10 safest countries in the world for most of the last 10 years. Dublin may feel a little less safe than the small towns in the countryside, & you may have to deal with comments from groups of guys if you decide to go out the bars ~ but if you visit the pubs earlier in the day (& avoid late nights), that probably won’t be much of an issue. I think you’ll really enjoy your trip there!! xoxo Noelia

Sara Button:  Sara learned the value of travel at an early age, on annual family trips in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Not to be relegated to the North American continent, she made her first trip overseas at the age of 13 and has been finding ways to travel ever since. She has explored Etruscan tombs in Italy, made hostel beds in Ireland, and hiked volcanoes in Costa Rica. Follow her travels near and far on her blog,  Bumblings of Miss Button .

Casey Headshot

Casey Siemasko : Casey Siemasko is a freelance writer, blogger, and avid traveler. She finds her life inspiration by exploring new places and meeting new people, and seeks to find magic in the most ordinary of places. When she’s off the computer, she enjoys practicing yoga, training for marathons and scuba diving. Somewhere in there she also found time to write an eBook, 101 Tips to Living in Taiwan.

Clare Wilson : England is a very small country, and Clare’s got some big ideas and even bigger plans for her twenties (the “Decade of Adventures”). So far she’s volunteered in a South African township, got her degree, interrailed around Europe, done a triathlon, taken the Trans-Mongolian Express and lived in China… but that’s just the start. Right now she’s working in a chocolatier, having UK based shenanigans and planning her biggest adventure yet. Mount Everest and Australia had better watch out!

Jenna Hall:  Jenna’s fascination for foreign spaces and far away places started at a young age while delivering shoes with her family to underserved villages in the Dominican Republic. Since then she has willingly catapulted herself into the most exhilarating and gut-dropping experiences of her life — like taking a flimsy motorboat from the puerto of Guatemala to Belize across the Caribbean Sea during a torrential rainstorm. For this adventure-hungry gal the woes and whoas!!! of travel have all been worth it. She has realized that traveling and experiencing first had what foreign culture is really like, serves as her ultimate passion!
