As the rhythms intensify, you’ll find yourself in a trance-like state, dancing and swaying to the hypnotic sounds. It’s a fantastic way to connect with fellow travellers and locals, experience Goa’s vibrant arts scene, and enjoy an evening of music and free-spirited fun.

The dam not only serves as a water reservoir but also provides a peaceful atmosphere for nature enthusiasts. You can visit the dam to take in breathtaking views of the reservoir and the surrounding hills. The best time to visit is during the monsoon season when the dam is at its fullest, creating a mesmerising spectacle of cascading water.

Goa Travel Tips - 10 Tips for First-Time Visitors

  • October 11, 2021

India has countless must-visit destinations, but Goa continues to be one of the favorites. The perfect beach town attracts every type of visitor – couples, solos, groups, families, party lovers, hippies, etc. and is equally popular amongst Indian and international travelers. People do not visit Goa just once. They keep coming back again and again – for bachelorettes, honeymoons , celebrations, sightseeing, partying, relaxing, boozing, weekend trips, and lots more. The popularity of the smallest state in India is not surprising. Goa has something for everyone – exquisite beaches , water activities, beach shacks, wildlife sanctuaries, architectural landmarks, late-night parties, bustling flea markets, mouth-watering cuisine, luxury hotels, and laid-back vibes. If you are planning to visit Goa, go through these tips so that you can enjoy your stay in the sunshine state to the fullest.

1)  Best time to visit Goa

Goa experiences a tropical climate and winter is literally non-existent. The best time to visit Goa is from November to February as the weather is just perfect with pleasant temperatures and less humidity. It’s also the party season and the town is abuzz with music festivals like Sunburn and Supersonic. Book in advance if you don’t want to make a big hole in your pocket. It is better to skip the last week of December as room rates skyrocket and the city is packed with tourists. March to May is the summer season in Goa and definitely, the worst time to visit Goa.

Goa Travel Tips

Monsoon falls between June to September and the temperatures are moderate but it can be very humid with heavy rainfall. But it is still a good time to visit the region as Goa is the greenest during this season. All the rivers, lakes, & waterfalls are full and spectacular and there can be no better time to explore the waterfalls, sanctuaries, & spice plantations. However, beaches become inaccessible and water activities & beach shacks are not operational. October gets better, as rains stop and things start opening up in prep for the coming high season.

2)  Traveling within Goa

Goa is huge and traveling from one point to another can be tricky. Uber and Ola are not available in Goa and taxis are quite expensive. GoaMiles is the government’s licensed app-based taxi service. However, the interface is quite basic and it’s not easy to find a cab. If you are able to book a cab on the app, it is a good option to reach your accommodation from the airport. The government has also fixed rates for auto-rickshaws. cab drivers (it’s still on the high side), but many of them don’t follow the pricing and ask for an exorbitant amount. If you are comfortable with the idea, you can opt for bike taxis. They are very affordable and easy to spot. The city is not very well-connected by buses.

One of the best ways to explore Goa is to rent a bike/scooter. Bikes are cheap and easy to rent and they will give you the freedom to explore as you desire. They can be rented for as low as Rs.250 per day. The other option is to rent a car, but that would be more expensive and you won’t be able to access many nooks and corners of the city. If you decide to self-drive, always carry your driving license, make sure you are sober, and don’t break any traffic rules. If you are a foreign traveler, you will require an International Driving License to drive in India . Don’t trust Google Maps blindly.  In case money is not a constraint, you can hire a private chauffeur-driven car to take you around.

3)  Explore North Goa and South Goa

Wherever you may decide to stay, explore both the regions of Goa – North, and South. North Goa is crowded and known for its scintillating parties and crazy nightlife, while South Goa is preferred for its secluded beaches, serenity, and relaxed vibes. Both of them have their own appeal, so give yourself time to visit both districts. Beaches in North Goa like Calangute and Baga host vibrant parties almost every night and are immensely popular. This region has the Old Goa settlement and you will have a chance to visit the top tourist places of Goa. If you are looking for secluded beaches, offbeat experiences, local flavors, and some peace, you should be spending more time in the South of Goa. Beaches like Palolem, Agonda, Colva, Benaulim, and Cavelossim are a few of the best beaches in South Goa. Vasco Da Gama and Old Goa are the added attractions in the South.

4)  Things to Pack for a Goa Trip

Goa is called the ‘land of sun, sea, and sand’, so pack accordingly. Beachwear, hats, sunglasses, scarves, sarongs, sanitizer, flip-flops, sandals, sunscreen, mosquito repellants, beach towels, etc., are the must-haves. Stick to one-piece swimsuits if you are going to public beaches. It is never really cold in Goa, so always go for kinds of cotton, linens, and other lightweight clothing. Skip body-fitting clothing as the weather is hot and humid mostly. Pack some conservative outfits for the churches, mosques, and temples. If you wish to enjoy the amazing Goan nightlife, you will need formal outfits and shoes.

5)  Explore the different Beaches in Goa

With a coastline spanning more than 100 km, Goa has countless beaches, and you are spoilt for choice. The beaches are known for their shacks, nightlife, watersports, and hippie vibes. Besides these lively beaches, there are many unspoiled and rustic beaches that look gorgeous with their translucent clear water, golden sand, weird rock formations, and lava rocks. Don’t restrict yourself to popular beaches like Calangute, Candolim, Vagator, Morjim, Colva & Baga. They are beautiful but crowded. If you want some tranquility and solitude, add beaches like Anjuna, Kakolem, Aschwem, Hollant, Cavelossim, Mobar, & Butterfly to your itinerary. Beaches in South Goa have calmer waters whereas beaches in the North have a bit more waves.

Goa Travel Tips

6)  Go beyond the Beaches

Goa is India’s ultimate beach destination, but there are lots more to Goa. Don’t spend all your time beach-hopping. There are many off-beat places to explore. Goa has beautiful countryside peppered with spice plantations, lush paddy fields, gorgeous waterfalls, & Portuguese-style houses. Visit Old Goa with its quaint churches, wildlife sanctuaries, museums, forts, and lots more. UNESCO Heritage sites like the Basilica of Bom Jesus, St. Cathedral, and the spectacular Doodhsagar Falls are definitely worth a visit.

7)  Don’t miss out on Nightlife

Goa has amazing nightlife and is known for its pubs, bars, clubs, and night-long parties. Central Goa is alive with trance parties, casinos, and nightclubs till the wee hours of the morning and you can dance the night away. However, you should be vigilant while partying, especially if you are a woman . Don’t accept drinks from strangers and never leave your drinks unattended. Call for help if someone is harassing you. Possession and consumption of certain drugs and intoxicants are illegal in Goa and may lead to rigorous punishment. So, be aware and vigilant at all times.

8)  Follow the rules and protocols

Goa is very liberal compared to the rest of India, but you should respect the local culture. When visiting religious places, proper decorum should be followed. Cover your heads and shoulders while visiting temples, mosques, & churches. Public display of affection in public places is still frowned upon. Nudity is not allowed on Goan beaches and is even punishable under the law. Don’t litter and leave trash on the beaches.

Some beaches in North Goa have strong waves and undercurrents, especially in monsoons. Keep a lookout for red flags, warnings, and signs as the high tide can sweep you out into the sea. Always embark on water sports under proper guidance and use the life jackets available. If safety procedures are not followed, things can quickly go out of hand. Public smoking and consumption of alcohol in public/beaches are prohibited in Goa. While tasting local liquor like Feni and Urrak, dink slowly with caution as they are potent. Do not drive any vehicle on the beaches as it is prohibited by the law.

9)  Savor the Local Cuisine

Goan cuisine is one of the best in the country. It is a mix of Portuguese, French, and South Indian cuisine. Seafood is the local specialty and must not be missed by people who relish it. Goan fish curry, vindaloo, sorpotel, and Bebinca (Goan dessert ) are very popular. The Goan curries can be spicy, so request the chef to go easy on spices while ordering curries. Always drink bottled water after checking that the seal has not been broken.

10)  Money Matters

Your budget might be shoe-string, mid-range, or high-end – Goa will not disappoint. There is no dearth of beach shacks, homestays, hostels, villas, wellness retreats, boutique hotels , heritage properties, & budget hotels in Goa. W, Fort Aguada, Leela Goa, Taj Exotica, and ITC Grand are a few of the best high-end resorts in India. Try to book a place near the beach for the best experience. Don’t miss out on the flea markets and night markets in Goa. The products (wooden artifacts, lamps, incense, jewelry, handicrafts , spices, etc.) are sold at very affordable prices, but be ready to use all your bargaining skills. Government Emporiums are good options if you are looking for quality and genuine products.

Be careful about pickpockets and never leave your luggage unattended. Cash is the preferred currency in local markets and street joints. Do not carry too much cash with you and don’t flash valuables or large sums of money. Use ATMs to withdraw money as often as possible. Cards and digital wallets like PAYTM and Google Pay also work in most places. Beware of touts who are lurking in tourist places looking for their next target.

Follow these tips and you are in for a memorable vacation in a beach town in India. And I am sure Goa will be added to your list of favorite destinations

Essential South Goa Travel Guide

Discover the Best of Peaceful South Goa

goa travel from south africa

South Goa is like North Goa was decades ago, with relatively pristine beaches and minimal development. If you want to escape the ever-growing crowd and commercialization in North Goa, and have a relatively laid back vacation, you'll love it there. Accommodations consist mostly of luxury hotels, heritage villas, and cottages on the beach. Plan your trip there with this South Goa travel guide.

Getting There

Depending on your budget, there are various ways you can reach South Goa. The most convenient way is to fly to Goa airport and then take a prepaid taxi from the arrivals hall. Depending on how far south you want to go (Patnem beach is usually the limit for most people), it will be a drive of up to an hour and a half (expect to pay an 2,000 taxi fare for this distance). The main railway station in South Goa is called Madgaon (Margao). It's on the Konkan Railway line and is commonly reached by train from Mumbai. Margao is 40 minutes away from Patnem and the trip costs about 1,000 rupees in a taxi. The bus from Mumbai is another inexpensive way of getting to South Goa, albeit a less comfortable one.

Where to Stay: Luxury Hotels

The majority Goa's luxury hotels are located in South Goa, particularly in the vicinity of Varca, Cavelossim and Morbor beaches. These fishing beaches are clean and unspoiled. The most popular luxury hotels are the Taj Exotica Resort and Spa , Zuri White Sands , ITC Grand , The Leela, Alila Diwa , and the Lalit Golf and Spa Resort near Patnem beach in the far south.

The Mayfair Hideaway Spa Resort is a serene boutique riverside option at Betul. It's a 10 minute boar ride along the Sal River to Morbor beach.

A stay at The Postcard Cuelim , inland from Cansaulim beach, combines boutique luxury with heritage and local culture. The property is part of an innovative new hotel chain that was founded by the former president of the Oberoi Group, and focuses on authenticity and flexibility. It has eight rooms in a glorious restored Portuguese mansion with a 350 year-old chapel. You can check-in and check-out any time you want. Breakfast is served all day too. Activities include heritage walks, cycling, and Ayurveda.

Where to Stay: Secluded Beach Views

If you're looking for an intimate and secluded getaway, a couple of options stand out. Paradise found is the first thing that comes to mind at Dwarka Eco Beach Resort on Cola beach (not to be mistaken with touristy Colva beach) about 20 minutes north of Agonda. The stylish cottages are among the best you'll find in Goa. They're set amid a sprawling palm grove that borders a lagoon and the ocean. The property is reached via a private dirt road and is idyllic as it sounds.

The Cape Goa fits the bill for somewhere more luxurious. It has nine gorgeous sea-facing cottages built into the side of the cliff near Cabo de Rama fort, about 20 minutes north of Cola beach. The cottages all have their own private Jacuzzi.

Where to Stay: Heritage Villas

Turiya Villa

Turiya Villa is a stunningly restored 100 year-old Goan villa in Canacona (Chaudi) town, near Patnem and Palolem beaches. It has two wings: the original heritage villa with five rooms that open onto the patio, and the new wing with three rooms that open out onto the garden. The villa is an ideal place to stay if you're traveling with family or a group of friends, as the whole property can be booked.

Vivenda dos Palhacos has a delightful village setting only a few minutes from the beach in Majorda. Nostalgic, intimate, and eclectic, it's perfect for discerning guests who want to experience a different side of Goa. Oh, and there's a swimming pool too!

Where to Stay: Environmentally-Friendly Concepts

Sharell Cook.

One of the top places to go glamping in India , you can stay by the Galgibag River in a chic tipi at La Mangrove south of Patnem. There are four tipis on the property, and they're really comfortable. Attached bathrooms have composting toilets and open-to-the-sky showers. Delicious global cuisine is prepared by the in-house chef.

The Tribe Goa is a collective of individuals that has come together to build an off-the-grid forest village for creative people to meet and live amid nature. They've transformed a huge derelict former cashew plantation into a thriving, self-sufficient jungle with guesthouse, vegetarian cafe, and music venue. It's located inland from Agonda beach near Leopard Valley.

Also in the same area, Khaama Kethna is another jungle haven that's been turned into a holistic well-being retreat center with yoga, organic food, healing therapies, and workshops.

Bhakti Kurtir, on a coconut grove near Palolem beach, is a similar concept. Its eco-friendly cabanas are made out of natural materials, and there's an Ayurveda center and yoga.

Best Beach for Chilling Out: Agonda

John Harper/Getty Images

If you're keen on simply relaxing and doing nothing, Agonda beach is the place! It's still fairly quiet and undeveloped. This long stretch of beach extends for nearly two miles, so there's plenty of space for everyone! Inexpensive accommodations are available in simple beach huts on the sand. Read more in this Agonda beach travel guide.

Most Happening Beach: Palolem

Ben Pipe/robertharding/Getty Images

About 10 minutes south of Agonda beach, Palolem is South Goa's most picturesque and happening beach (although don't expect a lot of action because South Goa just isn't like that!). Colorful coco huts and shacks are clustered under the dense palm trees that line this semi-circle shaped beach. Silent Noise Parties are held every Saturday night at Neptune Point, at the southern end of the beach. Read more in this Palolem beach travel guide .

Bit of Both: Patnem

Five minutes south of Palolem, Patnem offers a blend of entertainment and relaxation. This small beach, nestled between two cliffs, is a wonderful place to stay if you want to chill out but not be too far away from the nightlife in Palolem. Sometimes, there will be live music in the beach shacks at Patnem. There are a few popular yoga centers there as well. Read more in this Patnem beach travel guide.

Best Secret Beach: Galjibag

Sharell Cook

About 15 minutes south of Patnem beach, little-known Galjibag beach is a protected Olive Ridley turtle breeding site that remains refreshingly untouched and free of any permanent structures. There's hardly a soul on this long stretch of beach, thickly lined with Casuarina trees. The handful of shacks at the southern end of the beach serve fresh seafood from the nearby river. Read more in this Galjibag beach travel guide .

What to Do: Explore Old Portuguese Mansions

If you're interested in Goa's Portuguese heritage, it's possible to go inside some magnificent old mansions that have been restored and are open to the public. There are quite a few of them in South Goa, and you can spend a day exploring them. You'll find them in Chandor (the Braganza House), Loutolim (Casa Araujo Alvares) and Quepem (Palacio do Deao). They display a treasure trove of historical memorabilia and you'll feel like you've been transported back in time. Find out more about Goa's Portuguese mansions .

What to Do: Visit Goa Chitra Museum

TripSavvy / Gautier Houba

Learn about Goa's traditional farming lifestyle at the unique Goa Chitra Museum in Benaulim. It was privately set up to showcase and preserve the agrarian way of life, and has more than 4,000 artifacts on display. Many of them are old farming tools and equipment, as well as other implements including kitchen utensils. You can see them in use at the functional organic farm next to the museum. There's also a separate section, Goa Chakra, with about 70 antique carts, carriages and palanquins from across India. Interestingly, the museum was built using repurposed doors, windows and pillars from more than 300 demolished traditional houses. Tours are conducted every hour. Tickets cost 300 rupees per person.

What to Do: Hot Air Ballooning

Goa Tourism

Tiger Balloon Safaris, in conjunction with Goa Tourism, conducts daily early morning hot air balloon flights over South Goa from mid October to mid May. The flights depart from Chandor and cost $190 or 11,000 rupees per person.

Where to Eat: Top Goan Cuisine Restaurants

Fish curry and rice are ubiquitous in the beach shacks. However, if you're willing to venture further inland, you'll be able to feast on scrumptious Goan cuisine at some memorable restaurants. Martin's Corner , near the Alila Diwa hotel in Betalbatim, is perhaps the most famous one. It's been in business since 1989 and grew out of a corner shop with just a few tables. Seafood is the specialty, and it's flavored with family-made spices. There's live music Sundays and most nights.

Head to the Fisherman's Wharf, by the banks of the River Sal in Cavelossim, for seafood and Goan fusion cuisine in an upmarket setting.

In Margao, South Goa's main city, Martins is a stylish option for Goan and global fare. It's closed on Tuesdays though. A bit easier on the wallet, Peppers Gourmet Cuisine is recommended for traditional Goan food too.

Chef Fernando's Nostalgia, at the late chef's heritage mansion in Raia village just north of Margao, is renowned for its classic Portugese-Goan dishes that are rarely served in restaurants. The place really comes to life Thursday through Sunday, when bands play at night. There's karaoke on Wednesdays.

If you're visiting the old Portuguese mansions, book a day in advance to have lunch at Palacio do Deao (from 11 a.m to 3 p.m.). There's no menu or choice of dishes, apart from vegetarian or non-vegetarian. You're guaranteed to get an authentic homemade five-course meal though, featuring produce from the owner's garden. It's special.

Goa travel highlights

Pristine beaches, spicy curries, and colonial treasures – a trip to Goa has all this and more.

Join more than 1 million overseas visitors who make the trip to Goa each year to soak up its rich culture and exotic cuisine. For many though, the state’s crowning glory is its unspoiled beaches, some featuring golden sands, others white. Old Goa, located around 9km from Panaji, the state’s capital, holds a significant place in Indian history. It was a thriving city in the 16th century and was the seat of power of Portuguese India, until it was abandoned in the 18th century due to a deadly epidemic. Some of the old structures still stand today, and the area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you want to see some prehistoric petroglyphs, head to the village of Usgalimal. Here, you will find over 100 distinct rock engravings dating back to the Palaeolithic or Mesolithic eras, some 30,000 years ago. Get mesmerised by nature, when you visit Dudhsagar Waterfalls – or “sea of milk” in Hindi – on the Mandovi River. The spectacle is more than 1,000 feet, and from a distance the water appears white, like milk, giving it its name.

Goa’s beaches have long been admired by visitors from the West. Arambol Beach in North Goa draws large crowds and is accompanied by an ever-growing host of restaurants and shops. There are still plenty of quieter seaside havens though, such as Asvem Beach, Vagator Beach, Calangute Beach and Paolem Beach. Scuba diving is a popular activity between October and May, while there are also opportunities for paragliding and jet-skiing. The end of May and the start of June are the best time for surfing in Goa. It is also possible to see local wildlife such as cobras, pangolins and macaques at the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. Alternatively, you can rejuvenate your senses by booking a spa treatment with any of the resorts or hotels in the state.

Prepare your taste buds for an invigorating fusion of Indian and Portuguese flavours. The state’s long coastline means that seafood is a key component of many traditional dishes, while rice is also an everyday staple. If you’re a fan of curry, you may have already tasted some of Goa’s culinary creations, such as the famously hot vindaloo. There are plenty of restaurants and traditional eateries in the state. The choices range from the high-end dining in Panaji to the multitudes of homely, yet exotic, seafood shacks along the west coast.

Travel to Goa and you’ll find a wide range of shopping experiences. In Panaji are large bookstores, craft markets and food emporiums selling spiced lamb sausages, roasted cashews and other local delicacies. Margao, Goa’s second largest city, also has an eclectic range of markets to explore. In Old Goa you will find ample opportunity to pick up souvenirs to commemorate your travels.

Girl, 8, Is Sole Survivor of Bus Plunge: ‘No One Can Explain This Miracle’

Forty-five church pilgrims from Botswana, along with the driver, were killed when the bus plunged off an overpass into a rocky ravine in South Africa. The only survivor was a little girl.

A mourning woman sits on the floor, next to a seated man with his head in his hands.

By John Eligon and Yvonne Mooka

Reporting from Molepolole, Botswana

Lauryn Siako is the rare 8-year-old who springs out of bed to get herself ready for church, her family said. She loves the singing, the dancing, the worshiping.

So when leaders of her church announced that they were resuming the enormous annual Easter pilgrimage to church headquarters in South Africa this year, after a four-year hiatus for Covid-19, Lauryn pleaded with her mother to let her go for the first time.

Lauryn and her grandmother boarded a bus in their home village of Molepolole, Botswana, on Wednesday night with 43 fellow members of the St. Engenas Zion Christian Church, excited for the experience of a lifetime.

But by the following morning, Lauryn was the only one of the 45 passengers still alive.

The driver lost control of the bus on a sharp turn, and it careened off a high overpass on Mmamatlakala Mountain in northeastern South Africa, plunging 165 feet into a rocky ravine and bursting into flames. The driver and all of his passengers perished, except, inexplicably, the stringy girl who had just received her passport a week before the trip and had guarded it closely. She escaped with minor lacerations, South African health officials said.

“How did she come out of that bus?” Lauryn’s tearful mother, Gaolebale Siako, said on Friday, sitting in the modest home where Lauryn had lived with her grandmother in Molepolole, repeating a question she has been asking herself over and over.

“It’s hard to explain,” she added. “I’m hurt that I lost my mom and other people, but I’m also comforted knowing that my child is alive.”

As investigators continued searching for remains and answers as to what happened on Friday, church members questioned how the bus ended up on a treacherous, winding mountain road that they had never taken before in many journeys to the church headquarters in Moria, South Africa.

Kabelo Joseph Selome, a local ward councilor and a cousin of Lauryn’s mother, said in an interview in Botswana that the bus had been following two cars carrying church elders. But when the cars took a turn, the bus failed to follow — suggesting that the bus driver was lost, said Mr. Selome, who had spoken with the elders.

The police were investigating the crash as a case of culpable homicide, according to a statement, though they did not provide further details.

Emergency responders found Lauryn outside the bus with minor lacerations to her arms, legs, head and back, said Thilivhali Muavha, a spokesman for the chief health official in Limpopo Province, where the crash occurred. She was in stable condition on Friday, Mr. Muavha said.

Mr. Muavha said the authorities had not yet determined how the girl was able to survive such a devastating crash.

“All we can say is that we are happy that she was found alive,” he said.

The family has been speculating about how Lauryn survived, said Ms. Siako, 38. They wonder whether Lauryn’s grandmother, Onkemetse Siako, 61, threw her out of the window before the crash.

“No one can explain this miracle,” said Mr. Selome, the cousin.

The family learned at a briefing with police officials from Botswana on Friday, Mr. Selome said, that Lauryn had provided a lot of information to the South African authorities. She told them where the bus was coming from and where it was going, and even gave them her mother’s phone number.

The family now wonders whether God saved the young girl so that she could assist the authorities.

Lauryn was her grandmother’s favorite because she was so obedient, relatives said. The two lived together while Lauryn’s mother was away working, and they were inseparable. She got her cooking skills and independent mind from her grandmother, they said. She would wash and iron her own clothes and cook for the family — she baked bread the morning of the trip.

Lauryn was ranked second in her class, relatives said. She wanted to perform in a beauty pageant at school, but she was not picked because she walked too slowly and with her shoulders slumped, said her mother, who works as a safety and health official at a construction site.

Her mother told her to prepare not to sleep much at the Easter gathering. The praying, singing, dancing and prophesying happens on a field at night, and the energy is so high that the congregants rarely go to bed.

Ms. Siako said there was always a lot of excitement in simply traveling to the Easter gathering, which attracts millions of worshipers, and in seeing all the buses gathered at Moria.

The Zion Christian Church split into two branches in the middle of the 20th century after a dispute between the founder’s sons. Members of the St. Engenas branch wear a badge with a dove, while the other, larger branch, simply called the Zion Christian Church, wear a star. Their beliefs are virtually the same, said Joel Cabrita, a history professor at Stanford University in California, who has written a book about the church. They belong to a broader Zionist Christian movement in Africa that counts around 15 million members, the largest denomination in southern Africa.

While the St. Engenas branch decided to restart its pilgrimage this year, the other branch still has not.

The South African police confirmed on Friday that the passengers on the bus, along with the driver, were citizens of Botswana making the journey from Molepolole, a village that is considered the gateway to the vast Kalahari Desert.

As of Friday afternoon, 34 bodies had been recovered, the police said. Only nine of them were identifiable, with the others burned beyond recognition.

The tragedy cast a cloud over Botswana, a heavily Christian nation of about 2.5 million that was preparing to celebrate the Easter weekend.

Ms. Siako and other relatives said they worried about how this tragedy would affect Lauryn’s mental state. It is unclear when family members might be able to travel to South Africa to visit her in the hospital, or when she will be able to return home.

“I cry a lot,” Ms. Siako said. “I’m just worried, how is she right now?”

She said she pictured her daughter alone at the bottom of the ravine after the crash, and wondered whether she was scared and crying. “I’m asking myself,” she said, “did she even see what really happened?”

Ultimately, though, the miracle of Lauryn’s survival might be all this devastated community has to help it heal right now.

“This girl, just her being alive, is comforting the whole family,” Mr. Selome said. “This girl is giving us strength.”
