2x Grammy® nominated, unmissable French titans Gojira have announced their eagerly-awaited return to Europe with an extensive tour January – March 2022.

The new dates, which will be split into two legs, feature special guests Alien Weaponry and Employed To Serve. The first leg kicks off Jan 17th in Finland and closes in France on Feb 9th, with the second leg picking up in The Netherlands on Feb 20th and wrapping in the UK on Mar 14th.

Tickets for the European run go on general sale at 10am BST (11am CET) on Monday 5th July. Look out for earlier pre-sales from Friday – in the UK, the O2 pre-sale starts 10am BST on Saturday and the Live Nation pre-sale launches 10am BST Sunday.   For all tickets and more information on Gojira’s live schedule visit  www.gojira-music.com .

News of the tour follows the recent release of Gojira’s acclaimed new album FORTITUDE, which is available now on all streaming platforms.

The powerful collection is highlighted by the singles “Another World,” “Born For One Thing,” “Into The Storm,” Amazonia,” and most recently “The Chant,” a slow-burning track featuring some of Gojira’s most melodic material to date. The official music video for “The Chant” was written / conceived by the band’s own Joe Duplantier and directed by Russell Brownley.

Filmed on location in India’s West Bengal region in December 2019, the cinematic video examines the plight of refugee children from Tibet who fled their homeland in an attempt to preserve their culture following China’s invasion of the country in 1949.

Furthermore, Gojira recently concluded a month-long fundraising initiative in support of the indigenous owned NGO The Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB) who advocate for environmental and cultural rights of indigenous tribes in the Amazon. Working with the social good-focused digital platform Propeller, the charitable campaign raised over $300K through an auction and raffle of one-of-a-kind items from the band and their friends in Metallica, Tool, Slipknot, Slayer, Slash and more.

All proceeds are being donated to APIB to support their work aiding the indigenous tribes of the Amazon who have suffered immensely – victims of deforestation, land loss, forced labor, violence, and harassment.

Recorded and Produced by Joe Duplantier at Silver Cord Studio – Gojira’s Ridgewood, New York headquarters – and mixed by Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine), FORTITUDE is Gojira’s first album in five years and the follow-up to 2016’s Grammy® nominated LP MAGMA.

A collection of songs urging humanity to imagine a new world—and then make it happen, FORTITUDE has been earning widespread critical praise around the world, including The Guardian, Kerrang!, Metal Hammer, Clash, Upset, Prog, Rock Sound, NME, Classic Rock, Total Guitar, and more just in the UK, as well as clinching the band their highest chart positions to date, across the globe.

About Gojira: Gojira treat heavy music as a living and breathing entity, morphing, transforming, and changing in each iteration. After 2016’s MAGMA crashed the Top 25 of the Billboard Top 200, the history-making French band garnered a pair of 2017 Grammy® nominations, including “Best Rock Album” and “Best Metal Performance” for “Silvera.

Revolver cited its 2012 predecessor L’Enfant Sauvage as #2 among the “25 Best Albums of the 2010s.” Meanwhile, Rolling Stone named their 2005 breakthrough From Mars To Sirius one of “The 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time.

Handpicked to open for Metallica by none other than frontman James Hetfield, they have toured with Slayer, Slipknot, and more in addition to headlining tours and festivals around the world. The group’s latest, seventh full-length album, Fortitude, sees them push the envelope as they change heavy music once again. FIND GOJIRA ONLINE:  www.gojira-music.com  ‌

Hailing from Bayonne, France, Gojira are a French metal band who blend elements of progressive, death, thrash and math metal to create their eclectic and unpredictable sound.

Influenced by the likes of Pantera, Slayer, Neurosis, Sepultra and Meshuggah, Gojira create a technical but highly rhythmic style of heavy metal, with complex rhythm patterns and unusual structures that are held together through a groove that permeates through their tracks. Whilst aggressive, their sound still has a melodic effect through the varying vocal style, with their lyrics often focussing on their environmental activism, with the band themselves cooperating with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to raise awareness for the protection of marine life.

Forming in 1996 and consisting of the members Joe Duplantier (lead vocals, guitar), Mario Duplantier (drums, percussion), Christian Andreu (guitar) and Jean-Michel Labadie (bass), it took the band several years to gradually build their success. They released several demos and EPs in their early years which failed to catch any significant attention. Although with extensive touring and support slots for Cannibal Corpse, Edge of Sanity and Immortal, the band slowly grew in momentum.

It was not until their third full length release, "From Mars to Sirius" (2005) that the band were to make any significant headway, with the record reaching number 44 in the French charts and receiving widespread critical acclaim. Gojira had now caught the attention of the music world, gaining several key appearances at European festivals as well as embarking on European and American tours with the likes of Trivium, Children of Bodom and Machine Head.

Their fourth album, "The Way of All Flesh" came out in 2008, finding significant success in the American charts, reaching number 138. The band then embarked on an extensive touring campaign, taking four years to record their next studio album. Having signed to major label Roadrunner Records, Gojira released their fifth record, "L'Enfant Sauvage" in 2012, which was critically praised and established Gojira as a powerful force in the metal scene.

Live reviews

Gojira plays a unique brand of heavy metal in that they are absolutely relentless in their crushing thrash influenced guitar riffs, yet so rhythmic, almost robotic, in their melodies that their style seems to lend itself to the progressive side.

If there’s one thing to be said about Gojira, it is that they bring it live no questions asked. Whether they’re playing in a small club of a few hundred or a European metal festival in front of hundreds of thousands, Gojira’s intensity live is unmatched and the crowd response shows that, again, no matter the size. Gojira’s relentless music is perfect for the live environment.

Fast, heavy and downright brutal at times for the fan that wants to let out their aggression in the pit, yet technically proficient enough for the type of fan that prefers to stand back, take in a couple of drinks and enjoy the music on stage and the absorb the energy that surrounds them. Although, I can not imagine anyone seeing Gojira live and not feeling a sudden urge to get into the pit, especially not after a few whiskeys. They’re simply that good live, that brutal, one has really no other choice but to get involved in the Gojira experience.

A brilliant night despite one or two hiccups, personal and otherwise.

Gojira are like no other band I’ve seen. My son and I had been looking forward to this gig for months.

They played a very decent mix of songs, old and newer; among which a couple of favourites so we both went home happy.

The music is their own...an eclectic rollercoaster pace with some very poignant and relevant lyrics.

They experienced a technical hitch during the show with the lights, but no one cared. To be honest it’s all about the music with them. They could have played in darkness and it still would have been an awesome gig. The band were absolute professionals despite it all as well.

The O2 venues do however need a more comprehensive and workable policy when dealing with autistic fans. An incident with security (just one, others did finally help us), did put a small dampener, leaving my son feeling physically sick with stress throughout the show, otherwise it was worth the wait and effort to get him there! Hopefully they’ll review their staff training in future.

Overall I would highly recommend seeing this band.

Scandinavia is known for having a long term affinity with the genre of metal. However central Europe also has some great exports with the likes of Germany and the UK being home to icons of the genre. One of France's most well known bands internationally is Gojira.

The group originally from sunny Bayonne turned towards the darkness in the mid-90s and have enjoyed success with the fans ever since. They have done particularly well in the States where the fanbase has expanded rapidly with the release of every album and despite the group not putting out original material in almost three years, the shows continue to sell out due to their great live performance and strong back catalogue. The language barrier does not affect their rapport as they bait the crowd with a thick French accent which does not detract from any of the intensity. The crowd jumps, chants, moshs and sings throughout the night and the show culminates in a crunching finale of 'Vacuity' which really is the most intense performance so far.

I'm fortunate to have seen Gojira play in some pretty small venues in Chicago, as they're deservedly playing huge festivals and larger crowds now. The positive energy at a Gojira show is pretty unique - you see a lot of smiling faces. Their themes of self-discovery, perseverance, and environmental consciousness provide an uplifting vibe compared to the usual neurotic/depressing metal fare. In this thematic backdrop the music comes across as heavy, intense, and just so *beautiful*. Do yourself a favor, learn a few of the songs and go see them - they're one of the most powerful and worthwhile metal bands in a very long time.

Gojira speaks to me. Best metal show Ive ever seen. Such energy, such discipline and self control, top notch progressive metal sound, a beautiful masterpiece that is Gojira. Ive been going to see concerts for over 20 years now and nothing impressed me more than this band Which Ive loved since the days of Godzilla. I will pay anytime they come near me. Im more partial to the sounds of The way of all Flesh and from Mars to sirius but even the magma album, though its toned down a bit, is still fantasic. GOJIRA FOREVER!!!

Great set, packed, the venue was nice too. And the band did put a solid show. Strobe lights were a bit strong for my eyes, could be me. However, I wish the sound quality was better where I was (placed near the front, a bit on the right). It's borderline acceptable (can't hear much the lead singer).

By far the best show I've ever been to. Amazing sound, amazing energy from both the band and the crowds, a strong comraderie especially when the entire crowd is singing/clapping/cheering to the songs.

A fantastic night and would 1000% reccomend and can't wait to catch Gojira again!

I've seen gojira 6 times and they are always amazing. The 02 academy in bristol is awful though, I have seen loads of bands there. Terrible sound. Terrible atmosphere. Awful view of the stage unless you are on the barrier. The security are also assholes. Shit venue.

One of the finest and accessible extreme metal bands in the modern era. An assault on the senses with tight technical ability to create complex, multi layered masterpieces. Gift of Guilt, Vacuity, Flying Whales and Stranded great songs to first listen to.

Awesome! Better live than recorded but way better than you’d ever expect. Venue was super packed and couldn’t see “that” well but it was still awesome! Hopefully they come to Ohio sometime for a show in the future since I drove 9 hours to see them.

We went on the road with Gojira for their biggest French show ever, and it was mindblowingly good

You haven't lived until you've seen 16 thousand Parisians screaming along to Gojira

Gojira live on stage in Paris

"OHHHHHHHHH! OHHHHHH-OH-OH-OHHHH! OH-OH- OHHHHH-OH- OHHHHHHH! OH-OH!”

That’s the melody 16,000 people are yelling in unison inside Paris’s Accor Arena. It’s as enthusiastic and awe-inspiring as the mass chanting at a football game, yet it’s the sound of a death metal crowd. Gojira have just finished their biggest-ever indoor show, on their first-ever headline arena tour, and they’re standing onstage as a home crowd serenade them with the wordless hook of meditative song The Chant. They are speechless. Frontman Joe Duplantier is near tears.

Tonight is both well earned and long anticipated. The band have been working their way up metal’s ranks since 1996, and announced this arena run in 2021, off the back of that year’s beloved Fortitude album. Then Covid restrictions got in the way, meaning they had to push it back a year. Some bands would have been pissed-off about a situation like this. Not Gojira. When we chat to Joe and his little brother, drummer Mario, backstage before the show, they claim they were unfazed. “Covid was a worldwide situation,” Mario says, “so I can’t really complain about it. You have to observe what’s going on and not be an egotistical, selfish person saying, ‘I want to play my fucking show!’ We were super-chill during this moment.”

We believe him. After all, Joe and Mario are hours away from the biggest gig of their lives, and they’re chill as fuck. If there are any nerves or giddiness, they’re buried deep.

“Our attitude, from the very beginning, has been: ‘OK, we’re a death metal band from a little town, but technically a show this big is possible’,” Joe explains calmly. “We were always conscious of the fact that a mental attitude can either stop you from something or push you towards what you really want. When you project what you want out there into the world, you make it possible.”

Gojira chatting on stage before the show

It’s 1pm on show day – February 25, 2023 – when Hammer arrives at Paris’s Accor Arena. The venue has hosted some of the biggest stars on the planet – Madonna’s played here 21 times, Rammstein recorded their Rammstein: Paris live album/film here in 2012, and Snoop Dogg and Robbie Williams will appear later this year. It’s also an eyesore. Outlining the top of the venue, which stands on the northern bank of the Seine, are big, blue, metal beams that resemble scaffolding. Underneath, the sloping walls are covered in grass. It all gives the impression that the Earth is midway through swallowing a construction site.

What we see inside is far cooler: Gojira are doing their soundcheck. Joe might be casually dressed in baggy black trackies and a baseball cap, but the band sound slick, professional and monumental while tearing through Stranded , Our Time Is Now , The Chant and Born For One Thing .

It’s good that Gojira are on top form, because this place is fucking huge. The Accor Arena will host the basketball at next year’s Summer Olympics: the floor’s big enough for a full-size court, and will be surrounded by 15,000 seats that stretch into the heavens. The configuration’s slightly different today, as the stage cuts off the seats right behind it, but there will still be a 16,000-strong crowd.

After soundcheck, Hammer is guided to our own personal dressing room. Seriously. After walking through two storeys’ worth of bright, endless corridors backstage, we arrive at a door with a sign above it, emblazoned with the words ‘METAL HAMMER ROOM’. Down the hallway, the members of Gojira each have a dressing room of their own.

Gojira - Born for one thing - Paris Bercy Accor Arena (25 février 2023) - YouTube

Inside ours, there’s a sofa, a table laden with free drinks, and a wall-mounted widescreen TV with a live feed of the venue. Joe and Mario soon come in, and we talk about how the tour’s been going. Three days ago, Gojira played to 10,000 rapt fans at London’s Alexandra Palace. Last night’s show was even more special, though, because it was in Bordeaux – the city nearest to their hometown of Ondres, in southwestern France. More than 60 of the Duplantier brothers’ relatives showed up, including Mario’s daughter. Tonight, his wife will be watching.

“There are millions of Duplantiers!” Mario laughs. “My dad [French sketch artist Dominique Duplantier] has eight brothers and sisters.” “Our grandmother got a medal from the French government after the war for having so many children,” Joe adds. “No joke!”

The pair agree that their family prepared them for serious success. Their mum, Patricia Rosa, was an American yoga teacher who brought them up with the outlook that anything is possible, while Dominique favoured sheer effort over blind faith and worked 12-hour days. That mix of influences led the brothers to aim high, but grind in order to get there.

Gojira – or Godzilla, as they were known until 2001 – played their first show in the summer of 1996 at a village fête in Tartas, France. Thirty of the Duplantiers’ metalhead friends showed up and moshed the evening away. “Half the set was Sepultura covers,” Joe says. “But we felt like we were Metallica!”

Three years later, they embarked on their first tour, in France, supporting Norwegian black metallers Immortal, during their At The Heart Of Winter shows. “We slept in the van with a baseball bat to protect the gear while Immortal were sharing the one hotel room,” Joe recalls, surprisingly fondly. Gojira’s first Paris headliner wouldn’t be until 2006, when they played the 1,380-capacity Élysée Montmartre.

The band are well beyond sleeping in vans nowadays, but not even this tour’s been faultless. Two weeks ago, a disgruntled concert-goer in Belfast tweeted a photo of Gojira’s merch prices, which include £40 for a t-shirt and £80 for a hoodie, causing a shitstorm online.

Joe reveals he didn’t find out how much the band were charging until he saw the fallout. “It’s out of our hands,” he says. “We signed a deal with Warner [Music, which owns Gojira’s label, Roadrunner Records] 13 years ago when we were still in France trying to make it and we were super- excited. It was a 360 deal, so it covers everything: the fan club, the YouTube channel, the tour.”

However, he admits, “The one thing we insisted on was sustainability. Our shirts are made in a slightly better manner than your average shirt and that has a price to it. That’s on us.”

We share a friendly goodbye, before the brothers dash off to prepare for their set. On our camera feed, we can see the doors have already opened, with thousands pouring into the Accor Arena.

Gojira - Another World [OFFICIAL VIDEO] - YouTube

When we catch up with Gojira’s opening act, British metalcore ragers Employed To Serve, they are revelling in the size of the venue. Standing in the corner of the band’s huge, bright dressing room, guitarist Sammy Urwin notes the entranceway alone is bigger than some of the backstage areas of other places they’ve played.

“Playing this many big shows in a row has helped me get over myself,” admits singer Justine Jones. “I used to be so awkward talking in between songs. Now, I’m getting used to talking to so many people. I’m learning, if you make a mistake, the chances are that most people won’t notice. Just move on.”

In the room next door, we meet the other support band, New Zealand groove metallers Alien Weaponry. Drummer Henry de Jong says the tour has also been a learning experience for his band.

“Gojira have this level of professionalism onstage where everything flows so smoothly,” he explains. “I feel like we’ve been picking up some of that, but not directly copying it: ‘Oh! That’s a way to transition from song to song!’”

Although Alien Weaponry are in their early 20s, they’ve long looked up to Gojira. “It was 2012 and a drummer from another band showed me [Gojira’s fifth album] L’Enfant Sauvage ”, remembersHenry, who has a calf tattoof eaturing the artwork from 2008’s The Way Of All Flesh . “I was like, ‘Holy fuck! This just blew my mind!’”

Like Gojira, Alien Weaponry are a family affair: Henry co-founded the band with his younger brother, singer/guitarist Lewis. The bands also share common ideological ground. The New Zealanders often sing about their Māori heritage and historical or ongoing injustices. Similarly, on Fortitude , Gojira raised awareness about the problems affecting indigenous communities in Brazil.

Gojira’s activism is one of their biggest draws. We head back into the arena and get talking to a fan called Damien, from Paris. “Gojira aren’t just brutal; they want to give a clear message to new generations,” he reasons, wearing a t-shirt featuring the artwork of 2005’s From Mars To Sirius , an album about the rebirth of a dead planet. “There is no violence in their message. They’re important because they’re sending kindness through heavy metal.”

Gojira drinking champagne

Before the show, Hammer ’s taken to the best spot in the house – a platform behind the sound desk. Employed To Serve command Paris to “Wake the fuck up!”, and heads bang to the downtuned riff of Sun Up To Sun Down . Alien Weaponry inspire even more movement, especially when Lewis demands to see the first crowdsurfers of the night. However, the response the headliners enjoy is something else.

Ahead of Gojira’s arrival, a 180-second countdown is projected onto two large screens, eliciting a cheer when it reaches ‘69’. Then the band rock up to a stage divided into three levels and break into Born For One Thing , the capacity crowd singing its clean chorus. During Stranded , there’s a burst of confetti, and euphoric audience members grab handfuls and toss it around – something they’ll do for the rest of the show.

At the onset of Flying Whales , bassist Jean-Michel Labadie leaps off the stage’s middle platform, the crowd matching his level of enthusiasm as they bounce. Guitarist Christian Andreu maintains the energy by leading a bout of fist-pumping during Grind . And then comes The Chant . Bloody hell. Its folk-pop melody is picked up by 16,000 people and maintained for the duration of every chorus, to the point that it overpowers Joe’s vocals. It’s an experience so powerful that the singer can’t help but bow at the song’s end.

After closer The Gift Of Guilt inspires five simultaneous crowdsurfers and Paris bids Gojira adieu with an unprompted reprise of The Chant , there’s an atmosphere of victory backstage. The bandmembers head to one of their dressing rooms, but their cheers of elation are so loud that we can hear them from our own. We see Mario again, one last time, in a guest room where champagne’s freely flowing, surrounded by dozens of friends and colleagues. Even the ex-manager who got Godzilla onto that Immortal tour is here.

Gojira reached new heights this evening. However, the drive instilled into the Duplantiers as children is demanding they keep pushing. Mario’s already planning album number eight. “My ideas are sounding a bit more busy than Fortitude ,” he revealed to us earlier. “I’m really into dynamic tempos right now. That’s my thing.”

Meanwhile, Joe still doesn’t feel like their metal band from a little town in rural France has ‘made it’ yet and, true to his upbringing, he’s focused on the future. What is the band’s end goal? When will they reach it? What will happen after that? He doesn’t know.

“We have a crew so big that I don’t know some of the people’s names,” he says. “In that sense, we’ve made it. But I remember saying that 20 years ago, when we first headlined a proper venue in Paris. It’s up to us to define when we’ve made it – so all we will do is keep going.”

GOJIRA 's new album, "Fortitude" , was released on April 30 via Roadrunner Records .

Recorded and produced by guitarist/vocalist Joseph Duplantier at Silver Cord Studio — GOJIRA 's Ridgewood, Queens, headquarters — and mixed by Andy Wallace ( NIRVANA , RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE ), "Fortitude" is a collection of songs urging humanity to imagine a new world — and then make it happen. The band initially laid the foundation for "Fortitude" last year with the surprise release of the 2020 single "Another World" . NPR hailed the track as "an apocalyptic banger," and Stereogum declared, " GOJIRA are one of this century's most important underground metal institutions," while "Fortitude" was voted by fans as the #1 release on Revolver 's "Most Anticipated Albums of 2021."

Duplantier told Full Metal Jackie 's nationally syndicated radio show. about what he and his bandmates learned from 2016's "Magma" album that became "starting points" for "Fortitude" : "Well, 'Magma' was a beautiful experience, and it sort of brought us to another level, but we didn't really realize that [at the time]. I see that today — when we release something, [there's] much more attention around the band and stuff — but I was working hard, going on tour and I didn't see anything really happening other than my everyday life with the band. But when we started to work on 'Fortitude' , we wanted something different. 'Magma' was a little dark. We expressed some intense emotions related to the departure of my mom while we were recording the album. We talked about it, but on this album, we wanted to express something different, something more joyful and energetic. And [by] joyful I mean punchier music, more flamboyant, but the lyrics, like usually, talk about humanity and and the evil that men do. So, in that sense, it's not exactly a party album. But the sound is more rock, more exciting, I would say."

Duplantier also talked about the album title "Fortitude" and why it was important for him to encourage betterment of self, community and world. He said: "I don't know. Despite the fact that I think humans are pretty fucked up, and a part of me wishes that humans disappear from this planet to leave these poor animals alone, I believe in the potential of us human beings. I think we have beautiful things to offer, and I still wish to see that best that we have inside of us come out. And that's what I'm trying to do on an artistic level and a human level in my everyday life. And that's what we wanted to express in this album — to see people give their best and be strong and to not despair, and to project a positive image for their future and for our future. And through discipline and decisions and the right intentions, we can better ourselves and better this world. So it's almost by default the energy and the message we choose versus, 'Ah, let it burn.'"
