Goldap is a spa town in the Warmian and Masurian Province in north-eastern Poland which was once the historic land known as Lithuania Minor. The city is in Goldap County and the administrative seat of the urban and rural municipality of Goldap. It stands on the Goldap River between the Szeskie Hills and the Romincka Forest.

The city was originally founded in 1565 by Duke Albrecht close to the border with Lithuania in order to strengthen this region of Eastern Prussia. Urban privileges were granted in 1570 by Krolewiec, which was tantamount to granting civic rights. Unfortunately the city suffered first at the hands of King Zygmunt August in 1623 when every building, with exception the town hall, was destroyed. The next disaster, which led to the almost total depopulation of the city, was the plague which broke out in 1625. The town suffered regularly during the numerous battles in this region, particularly during the attacks of the Swedes, and the Tatar raids between 1656 and 1657 resulted in its complete destruction. By the end of the 19th century the geographical and natural attractiveness of the regions around Goldap begin attracting attention and the Romincka Forest becomes a favourite hunting ground of Kaiser Wilhelm II. After damage again during the Great War the city of Goldap and its surrounds began again to develop economically. The railway line was extended, the city was electrified and a system of sewers installed in the 1920’s. During World War II the city changed hands regularly and was an important strategic point for both the German and Russian armies at various stages of the conflict.

Today the city has the status of a lowland spa resort, which was granted in 2000 and as a climatic and mud spa offers treatment for disorders of the locomotive system as well as certain rheumatic, respiratory and gynaecological diseases. Treatments are also available for cases of obesity, osteoporosis, difficult healing wounds and bed sores, diabetes and various skin conditions. The therapeutic mud used at the resort is extracted around the region of the village of Niedrzwica and the local climate is characteristic of an averagely stimulating lowland forest which is moderated by the large tracts of woodland that surround the region. In 2010 the city received additional external funding for investment in further spa facilities which included a fourth brine graduation tower in Poland, which is scheduled for completion by December 2012.

With good geographical and natural conditions the region promotes sport and relaxation throughout the year. Visitors to Goldap will benefit from complete relaxation as the air quality of this region has been proven to be the cleanest in Poland. The city is a good base for visiting the surrounding towns and villages as well as improving overall fitness on the numerous hiking or cycling trails in the region.

Goldap has also become known a skiing resort. On the slopes of Piekna Gora there are more than 2000 metres of prepared pistes which are serviced by five ski lifts including one chair lift on a ski slope which is more than 750 metres in length. A kilometre long toboggan run, built from concrete, also operates in good snow conditions. Several international events are staged here annually. These include the „Yotvingian Ski Run” on the slopes of Piekna Gora in January and in the autumn there is the running of the Goldap Cross-country Race, which is part of the Polish Cup, as well as the International Goldap – Gusiew Race, which crosses into Kaliningrad.

Gołdap - jedyne uzdrowisko na Warmii i Mazurach; atrakcje, przyroda i ciekawostki

Uzyskała ten status w 2000 roku dzięki wyjątkowym walorom klimatycznym, najczystszemu w Polsce powietrzu, zasobom borowinowym oraz wodom leczniczym i mineralnym. Miasto zakończyło właśnie budowę kompleksu uzdrowiskowego z tężniami, pijalnią wód i parkiem zdrojowym za 40 mln zł. Oficjalne otwarcie odbyło się wiosną 2014 r. Władze liczą na zainteresowanie turystów nie tylko z Polski, ale też Rosji.

Gołdapskie tężnie są jedynymi w tej części Polski. Kuracjusze, turyści i mieszkańcy będą mogli korzystać także z groty solnej, minitężni i pijalni wód leczniczych (leczących zaburzenia czynności wydzielniczych żołądka, wątroby i trzustki).

Gołdap, jako uzdrowisko borowinowo-klimatyczne, specjalizuje się w schorzeniach ortopedyczno–urazowych, dolnych dróg oddechowych, kobiecych oraz chorobach kardiologicznych i neurologicznych.

Miasto, położone na skraju Puszczy Rominckiej nad rzeką Gołdapą, jest również prężnym ośrodkiem turystyczno–wypoczynkowym. Dobrze rozwinięta jest sieć szlaków turystycznych, rowerowych i konnych . Na Pięknej Górze (272 m n.p.m.) znajduje się park linowy, całoroczny tor saneczkowy i kawiarnia obrotowa, a zimą wzgórze zamienia się w ośrodek narciarski z czterema wyciągami, w tym kolejką krzesełkową.

Puszczę Romincką przecina kilkaset km szlaków, które prowadzą do malowniczych rezerwatów , jak Cisowy Jar, Boczki, Dziki Kąt o charakterze puszczy czy Czerwona Struga ze źródełkiem, z którego bije woda o czerwonym zabarwieniu; na Szeskie Wzgórza o wys. 309 m n.p.m. i Tatarską Górę, gdzie można odbyć Bezkrwawe Safari ; wśród czystych jezior Gołdap i Czarne, w urokliwą dolinę Błędzianki , zabytkowych mostów w Stańczykach czy tajemniczej piramidy w Rapie .

W pobliżu Gołdapi u podnóża Tatarskiej Góry, znajduje się hodowla, która jest ewenementem w skali regionu. Bowiem na około 300 ha ogrodzonej ziemi, wśród drzew i ogromnych stawów rybnych można spotkać stada danieli, jeleni europejskich, jelenie mandżurskie, dziki, świniodziki . Znajduje się tu jedyne w Europie gniazdo jelenia marali. Mieszkają także muflony, dzikie owce arui, koniki Przewalskiego, tarpany, długowłose jaki, guanako, lamy, konie kucyki, krowy, hailandy i herefondy, owce kameruńskie i skundy, kozy a nawet zebry i wielbłądy. Można obserwować orły bieliki, żurawie, czaple i gniazdujące na bagnach kormorany. Jest też egzotyczne ptactwo: strusie, pawie, bażanty. Gospodarstwo zwiedza się na pokładzie samochodu terenowego, co dodaje uroku całej wyprawie.

Historia miasta sięga XVI wieku, ale II wojna światowa przyniosła mu prawie całkowitą zagładę. Najcenniejsza, śródmiejska zabudowa, uległa zniszczeniu. Spośród zabytków warto odwiedzić konkatedrę, odrestaurowaną wieżę ciśnień, cmentarz żydowski i Muzeum Ziemi Gołdapskiej. Tatarska Góra wznosi się na 308 m n.p.m. Jej atrakcją jest jeziorko wytopiskowe znajdujące się na szczycie, otoczone tundrową roślinnością. Przy południowo-wschodnim stoku Tatarskiej Góry znajduje się jedna z największych w Polsce hodowli dzikich zwierząt "Bezkrwawe safari".

Hodowla jest ewenementem w skali regionu. Na 300 ha obszarze wśród drzew i ogromnych stawów rybnych można spotkać stada dzikich zwierząt oraz egzotyczne ptactwo. Gospodarze oferują szereg atrakcji: łowienie ryb, przyjęcia na swieżym powietrzu, fotografowanie zwierząt czy przejazdy gondolą i amfibią. Bezkrwawe Safari zaprasza od maja do końca października.

Piękna Góra (272 m n.p.m.) jest jedną z największych atrakcji Gołdapi. Latem jest to atrakcja krajobrazowa z pięknym widokiem na okolicę, parkiem linowym, torem saneczkowym i kawiarnią obrotową, a zimą z trzema stokami narciarskimi.

Piękna Góra posiada najlepsze w tej części polski warunki naturalne do uprawiania narciarstwa. Wzdłuż tras zjazdowych (350, 500 i 750 m) znajdują się wyciągi, w tym jedyna w Polsce północno-wschodnoiej, kolej linowo-krzesełkowa. Stoki są naśnieżane i ratrakowane, a po zmroku oświetlone. Na miejscu można skorzystać ze szkółki narciarskiej, wypożyczalni i snowparku.

Kawiarnia obrotowa na szczycie Pięknej Góry zapewnia odpoczynek przy ciepłych posiłkach i napojach. Pełen obrót trwa około 50 minut.

Wiadukty o wysokości 35,5 m to najwyższe mosty w Polsce. Wznoszą się nad wartkim nurtem Błędzianki, a ich długość sięga 250 m. Tylko mostem północnym do jesieni 1944 roku kursował pociąg z Gołdapi do Żytkiejm, Gumbina (dziś Gusiew w obwodzie kaliningradzkim FR), a nawet Królewca. Po południowym moście, który wybudowano w latach 1923 -1926, pociąg nigdy nie przejechał. Warto przy okazji przypomnieć, że Gołdap od 1899 roku należała do najważniejszych węzłów kolejowych w Prusach Wschodnich, gdyż pociągi odchodziły wtedy od miasta w pięciu kierunkach. Dziś czynnym fragmentem tej trakcji jest odcinek prowadzący m.in. przez Tokariewkę w obwodzie kaliningradzkim FR. Aktualnie mosty są prywatną własnością, jeden z nich został wyremontowany, a zwiedzanie jest płatne.

Będąc przy pomostach można pójść nieco na południe i dojść do jeziora Bocznego, zwanego szmaragdowym ze względu na niespotykaną, błękitną barwę wody.

26 kilometrów na zachód od Gołdapi, w Rapie koło Żabina, znajduje się najprawdziwsza piramida – wybudowany w 1811 roku rodzinny grobowiec junkierskiej rodziny Fahrenheit. Zbudowana została na planie kwadratu o boku 10 m i zwieńczona piramidalnie. Jej wysokość to 15,9 m. Wewnętrzna powierzchnia ścian komory grobowej nachylona jest pod identycznym kątem jak w piramidzie Cheopsa. Mauzoleum kryje w swoim wnętrzu szczątki zmarłych. Zwłoki uległy samoistnie zabalsamowaniu, co przypisuje się własnościom piramid i odpowiednio zaprojektowanego grobowca. Faktem jest, że choć umieszczono go na bagnistym terenie, w jego wnętrzu trudno natrafić na insekty. Według niektórych radiestetów, w miejscu budowy grobowca krzyżują się ważne linie promieniowania geomantycznego, dochodzące m.in. do angielskiego Stonehenge, a piramida uważana jest za miejsce magiczne.

Kwatera niemieckiego Naczelnego Dowództwa Wojsk Lotniczych z czasów II wojny o kryptonimie Robinson położona jest w lesie Kumiecie. Prawdopodobnie tutaj znajdował się także ośrodek badawczy prowadzący badania nad silnikiem pocisków V-2 oraz eksperymentalna hamownia silników odrzutowych.

Spotkać tu można wierzbę borówkolistną, brzozę niską, górską lilię złotogłów i malinę moroszkę, a spośród zwierząt m.in.: jelenie, łosie, wilki, dziki, lisy, jenoty, wydry, bobry, czarnego bociana i orła bielika. W latach siedemdziesiątych utworzono w Puszczy pięć rezerwatów, których jednym z najciekawszych elementów jest starodrzew. Są to rezerwaty: Dziki Kąt, Czerwona Struga, Mechacz Wielki, Boczki i Żytkiejmska Struga. Puszcza też ma swoją legendę. Był to niegdyś rewir łowiecki cesarza Wilhelma II, który każdego ubitego przez siebie jelenia upamiętniał kamieniem opatrzonym okolicznościowym napisem. Przez Puszczę prowadzą liczne szlaki turystyczne.

Golden Africa Safaris is a small company offering a personal service, very comfortable tented accommodation and great guiding – available on a private basis for groups of between two and 12 guests, and also on a non-exclusive basis.

While the non-exclusive option offers more flexibility on budget for couples and smaller parties, we highly recommend private mobile safaris for two main reasons. Firstly, they offer a little bit of adventure and a wonderful close to nature wilderness experience. Many of the best ‘bush stories’ originate from camping out in the bush and there is something simplistic about spending time in a small, low impact camp in the heart of the wilderness. Whether it is using torches to keep an eye on skulking hyaena in the darkness, having dinner interrupted by hippo coming out of a lagoon to graze, or falling asleep to the sound of roaring of lions, sleeping out in the bush is a magical experience provided you do not feel the need for more substantial accommodation arrangements.

Secondly, you are able to enjoy a private camp experience with expert guiding. Private mobile safaris are invariably led by passionate and knowledgeable guides, and you have them all to yourselves. You can also to a large degree set your own schedule, giving you the flexibility to have early or late starts, and to stay out game viewing for as long as you need.

AREA & ACTIVITIES

Habitat & Wildlife Golden Africa operate throughout Northern Botswana and can provided mobile camps in Moremi, Khwai, Savuti, Chobe, CKGR, Nxai and Makgadikgadi. About half the Okavango Delta region is made up of the gazetted Moremi Game Reserve which includes Chiefs Island. The Moremi is one of the most beautiful game reserves in southern Africa – an area of mopane woodland interlaced with giant fig and knobthorn trees, open vleis and river courses. Animals commonly seen in the area include elephant, lion, leopard, lechwe, wild dog, tsessebe, impala, reedbuck, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, genet, civet and serval, and many of the smaller mammal species. The birdlife of the region is equally spectacular. White rhino were re-introduced to Chiefs Island a few years ago and can sometimes be seen in Moremi.

Outside Moremi (close to the North Gate entrance in the north-east section of the reserve on the north banks of the Khwai River), the Khwai Concession offers excellent game viewing as well as the chance to undertake walking safaris and night drives. Although the Khwai concession can occasionally be busier than remote parts of Moremi or Chobe, it is a natural stopping off point on the journey from Moremi to Savuti (or vice versa) and the diversity of activities on offer makes it worth including in most mobile safaris through northern Botswana.

The Chobe covers an area of 11,000 sq. kms and its habitats range from the floodplain and backwaters of the river to sand ridges, dry lake beds, riverine thickets/bush and mopane forest. The Chobe stretches south-westwards from Kasane and the river in the north, to the Mababe Depression (a dead lake area fed by the Savuti Channel and Khwai River). Except for the network of roads and one lodge along the river and three in the Savuti, there is little development within the park. Most travellers to the Chobe concentrate either along the river frontage, or in the Savuti area. Travellers using mobile tented camps may have the option to move away from these busier areas.

The birdlife is prolific – kingfishers, bee-eaters, the majestic fish eagle, martial eagle, ducks, egrets, plovers, herons, cranes, storks, geese, woodpeckers, shrikes, thrushes, buntings, chats and owls are just a few of the many species found here. However, Chobe is famous for its large animal herds, particularly elephant and buffalo which frequent the river courses, where hippo laze all day, to quench their thirst. Amongst the 16 antelope species present in Chobe, kudu are common, and the near endemic puku can also be seen. The Chobe bushbuck is a sub-species of bushbuck found only here. Giraffe, lion, leopard, waterbuck, mongoose, tsessebe, roan and sable antelope, lechwe, impala, warthog, wild dog, hyaena, baboon and vervet monkeys are among the other animals to be seen.

The Central Kalahari is an area of semi-desert, where trees, bushes and grass do exist within an otherwise hostile desert environment. This allows a variety of birds and animals to exist in the region, including the rare brown hyaena, lion, cheetah, leopard, wild dog, giraffe, oryx, red hartebeest, eland, kudu, wildebeest, springbok, steenbok, black-backed jackal, meerkat, ostrich and a variety of smaller game including the nocturnal species such as aardwolf, honey badger, bat-eared foxes, serval, caracal, porcupine, African wild cat and genet. The region is best visited during the ‘green’ season from November to March/April, when game concentrates on the various open ‘pans’ within the reserve. During the dry season, the landscape is harsher and game is more spread out throughout the reserve (especially the late dry season from August to October). However recently introduced ‘pumped’ waterholes will become focal drinking spots during these drier months, and should improve game viewing.

Nxai Pan National Park lies just north of the Maun-Nata road and adjoins the northern border of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. Originally state land, an area of 1676 sq.km. of Nxai was declared a game reserve in 1970. In 1992 the boundaries were extended to include Baines Baobabs to give the present total area of 2578 sq.km. and National Park status was granted. The Nxai were once part of the great lake that covered central Botswana which also included The Okavango Delta, Makgadikgadi and Lake Ngami to name a few. In 1861, the famous painter Thomas Baines arrived to paint an unusual group of baobab trees – one of which lies on its side. This beautiful group of trees became known as ‘Baines Baobabs’ and they can be seen on the southern side of the park. The Pan itself is a fossil lakebed about 40 sq.km. in size. The landscape is largely covered by grassland, and dotted with clusters of umbrella acacia trees and mopane woodland towards the north. During the rains from November to April, the pans become covered in grass which is a landscape very similar to the Kalahari. Nxai is well known for its huge springbok population and once the rains have started, giraffe, gemsbok, elephant, eland, greater kudu, red hartebeest and zebra also migrate to the region. The zebra come in their thousands to drop their young, and the giraffe congregate to form large groups. The birdlife too is excellent with a large number of raptors in particular. The large herds of herbivores attract all the major predators including lion, cheetah, spotted hyaena, wild dog, leopard and jackal. Brown hyena and large numbers of bat-eared fox can also be seen. During the dry season some species move out to other areas, in particular the zebra herds and a high proportion of the elephants, but a ‘pumped’ waterhole supports the resident game and so there is good game viewing all year round.

Activities In Moremi Game Reserve and other National Parks activities are limited primarily to game drives by day. However, other activities (often third party) can be built into your itinerary, both in Moremi and further afield. In both Moremi and Chobe boat cruises can be included, whilst in Khwai it is possible to include guided walks (subject to your safari being hosted by a suitably qualified guide), night drives and mekoro excursions on the Khwai River.
