Wayne Kramer and MC5 Come Storming Out on ‘Heavy Lifting’ Tour

A sixth snub from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame did not deter the MC5 from doing what it does best, and naturally – kicking out the jams, mother – well, you know .

The latest lineup of the iconic group made its live debut Thursday night at El Club in their hometown of Detroit, not particularly far from the Grande Ballroom where the MC5 recorded their landmark debut album Kick Out the Jams . They're still led by guitarist Wayne Kramer, the only original member left in the lineup and one of two still alive.

On this night, MC5 delivered a characteristically shredding 85 minutes of hard rock, taking plenty of musical chances and taking no prisoners as they tore through 16 songs. The MC5 sampled all three of the band's original albums from 1969-71, while previewing two songs from the upcoming Heavy Lifting – the title track and "The American Ruse."

"Some bands take two years between albums," Kramer told the El Club crowd before the group played "Heavy Lifting" on Thursday. "Some bands take five years between albums. We take 50."

Kramer made no mention of the Rock Hall, which has now had the MC5 on its ballot six times . Earlier in the day, he posted social media messages thanking those who voted for the band, declaring "each of you are true fans of Rock & Roll." Kramer told UCR that "either way it’ll be OK with me" prior to Wednesday's announcement of this year's inductees , while acknowledging a softening of his once-dismissive views about being inducted.

"I've gone through all the arguments and cynicism and criticism," Kramer said, "and, listen, if the MC5 is recognized for their contribution I think that would be a good thing. There's a lot of people out there who love the band and love what the band represents. To have that appreciation confirmed wouldn't be a bad thing – but we've been here before, so let's see what happens."

Instead, the band concentrated on making a case at the El Club for why the Rock Hall honor is overdue. They were poignantly brought on by Ricky Derminer, the younger brother of late MC5 frontman Rob Tyner. (Derminer introduced Kramer to Tyner nearly 60 years ago in Lincoln Park, Mich.) Meanwhile, drummer Winston A. Watson Jr. appeared in place of Jane's Addiction 's Stephen Perkins, who had to sit out the two-week tour at the last minute for personal reasons.

They played in front of a banner declaring "We Are All MC5," covering a great deal of ground while blending the proto-punk of "Looking at You" and "Call Me Animal" with the psychedelic fuzz of "Poison," "Future/Now" and "Come Together" and the garage-y grandeur of "Rocket Reducer N. 62 (Rama Lama Fa Fa Fa)." The group touched on its under-recognized pop chops with "Shakin' Street" and "Baby Won't Ya," while new frontman Brad Brooks found on emotive spark in bluesy numbers such as "Motor City is Burning" and "Let Me Try."

Primed from three days of rehearsal, the new MC5 sounded tight but rough and rowdy in all the right places – particularly on "Sister Anne." It was one of several songs that showed the guitar-tandem potency of Kramer and the versatile Steve Salas, who's been an American Idol music director and has also worked with Mick Jagger , George Clinton , Justin Timberlake and others.

They had to stop and re-start “Tonight,” with Kramer laughing as he asked the crowd to "forget that happened." Elsewhere, he remained the primary soloist, but Kramer and Salas still found plenty of spots to tear it up together, including the latter part of "Looking at You."

Kramer tells UCR that "this is the best band yet," after leading the all-star MC50 on tour in 2018-19. "We're just at the beginning now of cracking the code on what we can do, but the whole thing seems to fit together really well. Rehearsals have been going fantastic. I'm shocked at how good the stuff sounds."

Resuming the MC5, Kramer said, "was really born out of the pandemic" and "a real pit of despair" he found himself in after four years of Donald Trump . He heeded his therapist's advice to "do something creative" and began writing songs with Brooks. He also wrote with Alejandro Escovedo, Tom Morello , Kesha , Tim McIlrath of Rise Against and began recording tracks with producer Bob Ezrin , with whom he worked on Alice Cooper 's Detroit Stories album.

"The whole thing kind of snowballed on its own," Kramer said. "At a certain point everybody says, 'Boy, this could be an MC5 record."

He also felt that it was a perfect time for the MC5 to ride again amidst a landscape rife with political discord, challenges to voting rights, culture wars and myriad other issues.

"We are in such a dangerous time for our country that I'm gonna have to pull out all the stops and use the most powerful tools that I have at my disposal," Kramer told UCR. "The MC5 has always represented action and commitment and principle. I think we're going to need all of that and more if our democracy is to survive. This was the time to reignite the MC5 to carry the necessary message for today."

Kramer echoed those sentiments on Thursday night, warning the crowd that "these fascists are not joking. They'll take our democracy away from us, without our permission. So we need to vote like we've never voted before. We need to get up and take action like we've never taking action before. I'm imploring you to get to work, step up, save this city, save this country, save this planet."

The MC5 have about 16 or 17 songs ready for Heavy Lifting , according to Kramer, but he admits "we'll have to cut that down. We'll save some of them for special releases, B-sides or something. I don't want to hear anybody for more than 40, 45 minutes, maybe 50 minutes – especially me. We're about two-thirds through the process. We cut all the tracks pretty quickly, and now we're just refining things."

Original MC5 drummer Dennis Thompson came out of semi-retirement to play on two tracks for the forthcoming LP, and was expected to join the group on Thursday for "Kick Out the Jams" but was a no-show.

The MC5 now have seven more stops booked through May 15, and Kramer hopes to return for more dates later in the year. In the meantime, he's continuing work on a film score for an adaptation of Arthur Miller's short story The Performance , while looking further down the road.

"I'm already thinking about what the next record will sound like, and what the possibilities are for touring if COVID continues to recede," Kramer said. "We might be able to get back to a regular go out on the road for a couple months every year. I'd like to do that for awhile."

MC5, May 5, 2022 at El Club in Detroit "Ramblin' Rose" "Come Together" "Baby Won't Ya" "Motor City Is Burning" "Poison" "Shakin' Street" "Heavy Lifting" "Sister Anne" "Call Me Animal" "Tonight" "Future/Now" "Rocket Reducer No. 62 (Rama Lama Fa Fa Fa)" "Looking at You"

We Are All MC5

On the heels of legendary punk progenitors the MC5 ’s nomination to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the group’s guitarist and co-founder Wayne Kramer has released two new songs and announced The Heavy Lifting Tour in May, all as a “reanimation” of the pioneering group, dubbed We Are All MC5.

The tour begins with a special hometown show, celebrating the birthday of Detroit’s El Club, before moving on to the East Coast (Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Brooklyn) and West Coast (Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego). Joining Kramer in the touring band will be singer Brad Brooks, drummer Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction), bassist Vicki Randle (Mavis Staples), and guitarist Stevie Salas (David Bowie).

“Nonstop touring, especially the last decade, I’ve come to understand that the music of the MC5 is as necessary as ever,” Kramer said. “It’s definitely high time to write and record new songs and to carry a message of uncompromising hard rock to fans around the world.”

Ahead of the tour, the band will release two singles — Kramer’s first new music as MC5 since 1972 — previewing a full album on Ear Music scheduled for October 2022. The songs were produced by Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, Alice Cooper, Kiss) and feature Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, bassist Don Was and Alice in Chains singer William Duvall, among others.

Popular on Variety

“We’ve just barely survived four catastrophic years of a failed presidency and a devastating pandemic. Brad and I started writing new music with the express purpose of pushing back against the cruelty of it all. It had become so polarized and depressing that bringing in other writers was like a hope injection. Tom Morello, Jill Sobule, Tim McIlrath, Kesha, and Alejandro Escovedo helped me expand the work using the most powerful weapon in existence: our creativity,” says Kramer. “Of course, Dennis ‘Machine Gun’ Thompson is playing strong and driving the beat on two songs, so I’m thrilled about that, too. Bob Ezrin produces because he is not only the titan of rock but also the most natural choice to deliver this music to fans in search of songs that capture an ultra- amplified soul. The results are earth-shaking rock and roll.”

Iggy Pop has said the MC5 belong in the Rock Hall “for their contributions to American music and its politics… They were hugely charismatic and influential. Their beliefs and approach had to do with things much larger than music and these things are coming to light more and more today on the world revolutionary stage. There is no band that I know of as dangerous as the MC5.”

Amanda Marshall Set For Major Return With New Album And National Tour New Single Out March 31

Diamond-selling and multi-JUNO Award nominated singer-songwriter Amanda Marshall is set to release a brand new original song collection entitled Heavy Lifting ( Coalition Music (Records) / The Orchard ) this summer, with the first single “I Hope She Cheats” out this Friday March 31st on all streaming services.

Marshall is also hitting Canadian stages with “25 & Counting: The Heavy Lifting Tour” , a cross-country tour that kicks off on June 11, 2023 in Moncton, NB with stops across the country including performances at Toronto’s Massey Hall and Ottawa’s National Arts Centre. The tour will feature special guest Sophia Fracassi , Kiss Radio’s February and March “One to Watch 2023”.

Don’t miss a chance to watch Amanda Marshall live, as Oxford Stomp festival reviews raved after her surprise appearance in 2019, “Amanda Marshall is a vocal powerhouse! She wailed and the crowd went wild.”

Additionally, Marshall is releasing a special vinyl re-issue of her 1995 self-titled, breakthrough debut album. Powered by her trademark soulful voice, Amanda Marshall has the distinction of being one of only 24 Canadian albums to achieve Diamond certification in Canada, the result of sales exceeding one million copies domestically. Preorder of the vinyl is April 12th and the vinyl will be in stores May 12th at Amazon.com.

Worldwide, the Amanda Marshall album has racked up sales of over six million units since 1995 in the wake of seven Top 10 singles including “Let It Rain,” “Dark Horse” and “Birmingham.” It launched the Toronto-born Marshall onto the international stage and made her the chosen tour opener for Tears For Fears, John Mellencamp, Simply Red, and the incomparable late Whitney Houston, among others.

Marshall followed up her debut with two more multi-Platinum selling albums, 1999’s Tuesday’s Child (produced by legendary Rolling Stones and Bonnie Raitt producer Don Was) and 2001’s Everybody’s Got A Story (a collaboration with music great Peter Asher). After spending a decade and a half away from the scene and re-tooling every aspect of her career, Marshall is extremely excited to be returning with Heavy Lifting , a record she is proud to have made largely on her own for the first time in her career.

The new 11-song collection demonstrates that Marshall’s voice remains a force of nature, and that her skills are as sharp as ever. It’s evident on Heavy Lifting ’s opening track and first single “I Hope She Cheats” (written by Marsha Ambrosius and Canei Finch), featuring a searing lyric about getting over heartbreak and Marshall seamlessly blending her trademark soulful blues-rock approach with modern R&B.

Marshall explains, “I started writing. And recording. For no one. For fun. I messed around. Experimented. Pounded on the piano in the middle of the night, turned my closet into a vocal booth. I sang every part and grooved in my pajamas. I hummed harmonies into my phone on the subway like a maniac. I swore a lot. I screamed and laughed and cried and made a million mistakes because who cares? ‘No one’s ever gonna hear this’. Wrong. I made a record.”

Marshall is thrilled to connect with fans across the country as she hits the road in support of her new album and in celebration of her past releases. For fans who were there at the beginning, this is a moment to revel and reconnect. And for those poised to hear Amanda Marshall for the first time, they are about to discover one of Canada’s most dynamic and explosive musical artists.

“An older musician once told me, ‘Doesn’t matter how many gold records you got — records is business. Stage is soul’,” says Marshall . “Live music is alive. Risk is what makes it great; we hold hands, tell the truth, and jump off this thing together every night. One night only, hey-did-you-hear-that? Old songs take on new meaning, and new songs get welcomed into the family. It’s a privilege to do what I love, with people I love, in places I love. It’s heavy lifting because it’s supposed to be. Stage is soul. See you out there. I can’t wait.”

Wayne Kramer & MC5 Announce ‘The Heavy Lifting Tour’ – Releasing Two New Songs

On the heels of the MC5’s nomination to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, legendary Detroit proto-punk/activist/hard-rock innovator Wayne Kramer has released two new songs and announced  The Heavy Lifting Tour  in May – all as a reanimation of his pioneering group dubbed WE ARE ALL MC5. The tour begins with a special hometown show, celebrating the birthday of Detroit’s El Club. The show serves as a return of sorts to his formative years; Kramer’s memories of that neighborhood were chronicled all too well in his acclaimed 2018 memoir  The Hard Stuff . After Detroit, the tour will hit major markets on the East Coast (Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Brooklyn) and West Coast (Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego). Joining the pioneering guitarist in the touring band will be singer Brad Brooks, drummer Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction), bassist Vicki Randle (Mavis Staples), and guitarist Stevie Salas (David Bowie).

“Nonstop touring, especially the last decade, I’ve come to understand that the music of the MC5 is as necessary as ever. It’s definitely high time to write and record new songs and to carry a message of uncompromising hard rock to fans around the world.” Watch Kramer talk more about the new music and upcoming tour on  YouTube .

Ahead of the tour, the band will release two singles — Kramer’s first new music as MC5 since 1972 — previewing a full album on Ear Music scheduled for October 2022. Both songs were produced by the iconic Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, Alice Cooper, KISS) and engineered by 4x Grammy winner Dave Way (Paul McCartney, Fiona Apple, Neil Young) at his studio The Waystation. Ear Music is home to Deep Purple, Def Leppard, Helmet, Joe Satriani, Foreigner, Joe Henry, Marianne Faithfull, and others. Last year, Alice Cooper’s Ear Music album  Detroit Stories , for which Kramer co-wrote songs and performed, topped Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart.

MC5 Announce First New Album in 51 Years and U.S. Tour

By Evan Minsker

MC5s Wayne Kramer

Following a 2018 tour celebrating Kick Out the Jams , Wayne Kramer has once again revived the iconic Detroit proto-punk outfit, the MC5 . They’re touring once again, but that’s not all. A full 51 years after the release of the band’s last album, Kramer has announced that a new album of original MC5 songs will be released in October via Ear Music . He’s shared a preview of a new song called “Heavy Lifting”—a collaboration with Tom Morello , Don Was, singer Brad Brooks, and Abe Laboriel Jr. Listen to the preview and find the band’s upcoming tour dates below.

The touring lineup of the MC5 is Kramer, Brooks, drummer Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction), bassist Vicki Randle (Mavis Staples), and guitarist Stevie Salas (David Bowie). The album features percussion from original MC5 drummer Dennis “Machine Gun” Thompson on two songs. It will be produced by Bob Ezrin, whose production credits include Pink Floyd’s The Wall and Lou Reed’s Berlin .

“We’ve just barely survived four catastrophic years of a failed presidency and a devastating pandemic ,” Kramer said in a statement. “Brad and I started writing new music with the express purpose of pushing back against the cruelty of it all.” The album is also set to feature contributions from Kesha, Morello, Alejandro Escovedo, Jill Sobule, and Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath.

The original incarnation of the MC5 made three albums total: 1969’s Kick Out the Jams , 1970’s Back in the USA , and 1971’s High Time . Kramer and Thompson are the sole two living members. Singer Rob Tyner died in 1991, guitarist Fred “Sonic” Smith died in 1994, and bassist Michael Davis died in 2012. Kramer has kept the band touring over the past several years and published his memoir The Hard Stuff in 2018.

“Nonstop touring, especially the last decade, I’ve come to understand that the music of the MC5 is as necessary as ever,” Kramer said. “It’s definitely high time to write and record new songs and to carry a message of uncompromising hard rock to fans around the world.” The MC5 are in the long list of nominees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2022 .

Wayne Kramer Reveals New MC5 Tour Dates, Live Band + Upcoming Album Plan

It's time to kick out some new jams, at least according to MC5 leader Wayne Kramer who has new music in the works as well as some upcoming tour dates to support it. The legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-nominated musician is firing up MC5 for a 2022 return with a May tour featuring his "We Are All MC5" live lineup, and plans to release a new album this October.

The tour kicks off May 5 with a Detroit hometown show at El Club, featuring the current lineup of stellar players that include drummer Stephen Perkins (Jane's Addiction), singer Brad Brooks (Pollo Elastico), bassist Vicki Randle (Mavis Staples) and guitarist Steve Salas (David Bowie).

Speaking in a video message, Kramer also revealed that new music is soon approaching. "Been a long time since there's been any new MC5 music and I've been busy writing and recording a new album produced by the great Bob Ezrin. We're gonna take it to the streets and feel like we are all MC5," says the MC5 leader in a video seen here .

You can get a taste of one song titled "Heavy Lifting" that also shares a name with the upcoming tour in the tour teaser below. The track features a guest turn by fellow guitarist Tom Morello and is one of two songs arriving ahead of the planned October release by Ear Music.  Don Was, Abe Laboriel Jr, and singer Brad Brooks also appear on the song.

The B-side “Edge of the Switchblade” reimagines Kramer’s tribute to the MC5’s formative years, first heard on his acclaimed 1995 Epitaph solo album The Hard Stuff , in a new recording with Laboriel, Was, and special guest William Duvall from Alice in Chains sharing lead vocal duties with Kramer.

"Nonstop touring, especially the last decade, I’ve come to understand that the music of the MC5 is as necessary as ever. It’s definitely high time to write and record new songs and to carry a message of uncompromising hard rock to fans around the world," says Kramer, who then adds of bringing MC5's fiery brand of rock to a new album, "We’ve just barely survived four catastrophic years of a failed presidency and a devastating pandemic. Brad and I started writing new music with the express purpose of pushing back against the cruelty of it all. It had become so polarized and depressing that bringing in other writers was like a hope injection."

He continues, "Tom Morello, Jill Sobule, Tim McIlrath, Kesha and Alejandro Escovedo helped me expand the work using the most powerful weapon in existence: our creativity. Of course, Dennis ‘Machine Gun’ Thompson is playing strong now and driving the beat on two songs, so I'm thrilled about that, too. Bob Ezrin produces because he is not only the titan of rock but also the most natural choice to deliver this music to fans in search of songs that capture an ultra- amplified soul. The results are earth-shaking rock 'n' roll."

“Aside from being a dear friend and a personal hero of mine, Wayne Kramer is a rock and roll treasure because he is keeping the spirit of the MC5 and Detroit’s unique and hugely important blend of punk and funk alive and well in all that he does,” adds producer Bob Ezrin. “I’m excited and honored to be working on this project with him and the supremely talented group of lunatics we have assembled for it. We are all MC5!”

MC5 Announce New Album and 2022 US Tour, Unveil “Heavy Lifting” Featuring Tom Morello: Stream

The post MC5 Announce New Album and 2022 US Tour, Unveil “Heavy Lifting” Featuring Tom Morello : Stream appeared first on Consequence .

Legendary rockers MC5 are releasing a new album under the band name We Are All MC5, led by founding member Wayne Kramer . Ahead of the LP, the band has unveiled the single “Heavy Lifting” featuring Tom Morello — the first new MC5 music in 50 years. Additionally, Kramer will take a “reanimated” version of the band out for a brief US tour in May.

The MC5 are nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year, and for good reason. Despite only releasing three albums — 1969’s Kick Out the Jams , 1970’s Back in the USA and 1971’s High Time — the band has had a profound influence on both punk rock and hard rock.

The group broke up in 1972, but re-formed in 1992 to play one show in honor of late vocalist Rob Tyner , who died in 1991. Tyner’s passing was followed by the death of fellow classic member Fred “Sonic” Smith in 1994. A more extensive reunion followed in 2005, with The Dictators’ Handsome Dick Manitoba taking lead vocals, until classic bassist Michael Davis died in 2012. In 2018, Kramer embarked on the MC50 tour with an all-star lineup of musicians filling out the touring lineup.

For the 2022 tour, Kramer has recruited a lineup that includes singer Brad Brooks (Pollo Elastico), drummer Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction), bassist Vicki Randle (Mavis Staples) and guitarist Stevie Salas (David Bowie). The outing kicks off May 5th in Detroit and runs through a May 15th show in San Diego. Ticket info is available at Wayne Kramer’s Facebook page .

“Nonstop touring, especially the last decade, I’ve come to understand that the music of the MC5 is as necessary as ever,” stated Kramer. “It’s definitely high time to write and record new songs and to carry a message of uncompromising hard rock to fans around the world.”

The new song “Heavy Lifting” not only features Tom Morello, but was co-written by the Rage Against the Machine guitarist. It also features Brad Brooks on vocals and classic MC5 drummer Dennis “Machine Gun” Thompson on drums.

The B-Side to “Heavy Lifting” boasts another new recording, “Edge of the Switchblade,” which offers an update of a Wayne Kramer solo song, and features Alice in Chains singer William DuVall sharing lead vocals with Kramer.

The new album is being produced by the legendary Bob Ezrin and will arrive via Ear Music, although no release date has been announced as of yet. Check out a portion of the new song “Heavy Lifting” as well as a tour teaser below, followed by the tour dates.

Wayne Kramer's MC5 does the heavy-rock lifting in tour-opening show in Detroit

the heavy lifting tour

“Some bands take two years between records,” Wayne Kramer told his audience Thursday at El Club. “Some bands take five years. We take 50.”

The raucous musical spirit and activist bent of the MC5 was on the agenda at the cozy Detroit venue, as Kramer and his new bandmates kicked off the Heavy Lifting Tour, prelude to a fall album that will be first since 1971 to bear the MC5 name.

Armed with his red-white-and-blue Fender Strat, playing for several hundred devoted hometown fans not far from his boyhood neighborhood, the 74-year-old guitarist tapped his old band’s catalog for a 16-song set.

Outside the venue, lively Cinco de Mayo action up and down Vernor added an extra festive touch to the occasion, as the music of the Five got a 5/5 workout in southwest Detroit.

Kramer was the lone original in a 2022 MC5 lineup featuring vocalist Brad Brooks, guitarist Stevie Salas, bassist Vicki Randle and drummer Winston Watson. It was a night that set out to showcase the jagged edges (“Baby Won’t Ya”), dense raunch ‘n’ roll (“Come Together”) and primal energy (“Call Me Animal”) that were classic MC5 hallmarks. But absent was another key MC5 trait: the wild onstage abandon that made the original group’s live shows the stuff of Detroit lore.

A backdrop emblazoned with the slogan “WE ARE ALL MC5” hammered home the theme of Kramer’s new endeavor: a call to action in tumultuous times.

“We need to get to work, brothers and sisters,” Kramer said late in the evening, declaring that democracy is in peril and it’s time to “save this city, save this country, save this planet.”

The 100-minute set had been introduced by an emcee, later identified by Kramer as the brother of late MC5 singer Rob Tyner, with the trademark proclamation that it was time to “kick out the jams!”

A grinning Kramer arrived with familiar old showmanship intact — spinning and shimmying onstage, thrusting his guitar skyward, windmilling his licks. Salas periodically linked up with Kramer at center stage to trade solos and conjure twin guitar storms.

While the strong-throated, sunglass-sporting Brooks manned the stage with serviceable front-man charisma, this was very much Kramer’s spotlight, a place to deposit guitar sizzle on numbers such as “Poison,” “Future/Now” and a propulsive “Looking at You,” which closed the regular set.

The show drew evenly from the MC5’s three albums. “Ramblin’ Rose” (with Kramer handing off his falsetto vocal duties to a bandmate) opened a setlist that included just one new song, the first full public glimpse of “Heavy Lifting” from the forthcoming album.

“Rocket Reducer No. 62 (Rama Lama Fa Fa Fa),” complete with an extended breakdown, was a dependable highlight, while “Kick Out the Jams” wrapped a three-song encore with a nostalgic punch.

For all the high spirits and good vibes, things never quite hit seventh gear. The show didn’t consistently deliver the transcendent transport we got four years ago when Kramer led a band dubbed “MC50” through an anniversary celebration of “Kick Out the Jams” at three Detroit shows. And while there was plenty of the tight but ragged charm that defines the MC5’s musical identity, Thursday lacked the edge-of-your-seat sense of potential chaos, a feeling the whole thing might blow up as easily as it blossomed.

Still, there was an organic feel to Thursday's opening-night proceedings, including a botched start to “Tonight” that had Kramer impishly conceding “we just (f’d) that up royally,” before the band rebooted to find its way to a penetrating groove.

The Heavy Lifting Tour sprint will move to Pennsylvania and New York for shows this weekend before heading to the West Coast and wrapping up May 15 in San Diego. Kramer’s new MC5 album, produced by Bob Ezrin and to set for release by Germany’s Ear Music, is due in October.

Wayne Kramer Reanimates MC5 with New Album 'Heavy Lifting'

The pioneering guitarist announces news following Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nomination.

We Are All MC5

MC5 founder Wayne Kramer and A-list rock producer Bob Ezrin have teamed up with the earMUSIC label in a collaboration that will see one of the longest-awaited returns in music history come to fruition.

“I’ve been thinking it’s been a long time since there’s been any new MC5 music," says pioneering electric guitar player Kramer. "I’ve been busy writing and recording a new album produced by the great Bob Ezrin. And we’ll take it to the streets ‘cause I feel like we are all MC5.”

Speaking of the project, Ezrin (whose credits include Aerosmith, Pink Floyd and Deep Purple among other household names) commented, “Kramer is a rock and roll treasure because he is keeping the spirit of the MC5 and Detroit’s unique and hugely important blend of punk and funk alive and well in all that he does.

“I’m excited and honored to be working on this project with him and the supremely talented group of lunatics we have assembled for it. We are all MC5!”

The highly anticipated new album Heavy Lifting is set for release in October 2022 and represents Wayne Kramer’s first MC5 release in 50 years.

We Are All MC5's 'The Heavy Lifting Tour' promo

Ahead of the album’s October release, the band will be putting out two songs: the title track “Heavy Lifting” and “Edge of the Switchblade.”

Co-written by Kramer and singer Brad Brooks along with Tom Morello, “Heavy Lifting” is described in a press release as a “fiery guitar-dueling anthem” that is indicative of the axeman’s “creative vision for the MC5 today.”

Let quinoa do the heavy lifting in this Southwestern salad

Quinoa may be prepared like rice, and its nutty flavor adds hearty, toothsome texture to salads, pilafs and stews..

Southwestern Quinoa Salad

If you’re making this Southwestern quinoa salad ahead of time, add the parsley and cilantro shortly before serving to maintain their freshness and prevent wilting.

Lynda Balslev/Tastefood

Don’t mistake this salad for tabbouleh. While it certainly bears a resemblance, it’s not the traditional Levantine bulgur salad tumbled with tomatoes, onions and fresh green herbs. Instead, this salad veers south for inspiration and replaces the bulgur with quinoa.

Quinoa is a South American crop which produces small seeds that are nutrient-rich in calcium, phosphorous, magnesium and iron. These little seeds also add a hefty amount of protein and fiber for a balanced and satisfying meal and provide a gluten-free alternative to grains such as bulgur.

Quinoa may be prepared like rice, and its nutty flavor adds hearty, toothsome texture to salads, pilafs and stews. The dense seeds require a good amount of seasoning, so don’t be shy with your spices and aromatics. This salad looks to the Southwest for flavor, fragrance and chile heat. Finely grated carrot ripples throughout the salad, providing refreshing moisture and sweetness. Be sure to taste the salad as you build it.

This recipe can be prepared in advance and will remain fresh for up to 24 hours in the refrigerator. If making ahead, add the parsley and cilantro shortly before serving to maintain their freshness and prevent wilting — or simply add more Like tabbouleh, this is a greedy salad when it comes to absorbing fresh herbs. The more the merrier.

Southwestern Quinoa Salad

Yield: Serves 6

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 1/2 cups quinoa
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced or pushed through a press
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 3 to 4 thin scallions, sliced
  • 1 to 2 carrots, peeled, finely grated
  • 1 red bell pepper, stemmed and seeded, finely diced
  • 1 poblano pepper, stemmed and seeded, finely diced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce, such as Tabasco (or to taste)
  • 1 1/2 cups cilantro leaves and tender stems, chopped
  • 1 packed cup Italian parsley leaves, chopped

DIRECTIONS:

1. Rinse the quinoa in a fine-mesh sieve under cold running water. Drain and transfer to a saucepan. Cover with 2 inches of cold water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Simmer until the quinoa seeds release their germ (the white tail), about 15 minutes.

2. Drain the quinoa and transfer to a bowl. Add the garlic, oil, salt, cumin, paprika, coriander and black pepper. Stir to combine, then cool to room temperature.

3. Add all the remaining ingredients and stir again. Taste for seasoning. Add more spices, salt or herbs if you like.

4. Cover and refrigerate the salad for at least one hour to allow the flavors to develop. Before serving, give it another taste. The flavors will mellow the longer the salad sits.

The lineup also includes Till Lindemann from Rammstein, hardcore/metal forerunners Knocked Loose , metalcore influencers Hatebreed and Poison The Well , heavy metal icons GWAR , in addition to Vended , Dying Wish , Zulu, Twin Temple, Holy Wars, Swollen Teeth and Spine & Dose. Where is Knotfest being held?

Who is Slipknot?

Percussionist Shawn Crahan, former vocalist Anders Colsefni and bassist Paul Gray formed Slipknot in 1995. Vocalist Corey Taylor joined the band in 1997 as its new lead singer.

Crahan came up with the idea of wearing a mask when he brought a clown mask with him to rehearsals. Now he’s known as “The Clown.” By 1997, the band decided that everyone would wear a mask and a matching jumpsuit.

The band's seventh studio album, "The End, So Far," came out in September 2022.

Texas rivers rise to levels not seen since hurricane harvey with dozens still waiting to be rescued and more heavy rains expected.

Rescue workers and residents dealing with devastating flooding in East Texas  are getting a badly needed break in the weather Saturday, but another round of heavy rain looms for Sunday, prompting extended flood alerts.

With the break in the weather comes the good news that river levels peaked Friday night along the East Fork of the San Jacinto River, which has seen the worst of the flooding, but is forecast to remain well above major flood stage through much of Saturday.

NOAA’s river gauge in New Covey says the river crested just under 78 feet — nearly 20 feet above flood level and only 3.4 feet shy of the record crest set during Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

High waters that reached up to the rooftops of many homes led officials to issue mandatory evacuations along the east side of the river and urged residents not to ride out the storms in their homes.

“That means elevated structures will get water … it means the water will be hitting power lines, which puts our emergency evacuation vehicles at risk because they’re not going to be able to see those power lines,” Harris County Executive Judge Lina Hidalgo said Thursday.

“Please evacuate that area as soon as possible.”

Still, dozens of people and pets needed rescue as crews in boats fanned out across the flooded streets and homes looking for neighbors who needed help evacuating.

Hidalgo said around 700 homes were flooded upriver in Polk County as well, giving a warning of what was to come Friday as that water pushed downstream into northern Harris County.

River flooding was also reported along the western fork of the San Jacinto River near Kirkwood, though not as severe as along the eastern fork.

In San Jacinto County, residents along the Trinity River downstream of the Lake Livingston dam were told to evacuate earlier in the week after the dam had to radically increase its outflow as the upstream watershed collected 17-20 inches of rain within a week.

Widespread storm rainfall totals of 6-12 inches were measured across the rest of the region.

Flood Watches remain posted as more rain eyes East Texas

While Saturday will give the region a chance to wring out and allow rivers a chance to recover, more rain is in the forecast for Sunday as a storm system spreading severe weather in the Plains on Saturday continues to push east.

Flood Watches remain in effect for Houston and the flooded areas of East Texas into Sunday afternoon.

Only isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected Saturday, but more widespread heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast for Saturday night into Sunday.

Additional rainfall totals of 1-3 inches are likely with some spots receiving as much as 5 inches of rain.

As a result, NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has kept the region at a Level 2 out of 4 risk for flash flooding into Sunday.

The current forecast for the eastern fork of the San Jacinto river shows a slight slowing of the water’s rate of recession later this weekend, but so far still keeps river levels dropping despite the potential for added rain.

The long range forecasts are trending much drier and warmer for the region beginning Monday with mostly sunny skies and highs near 90 for the workweek ahead.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
