One day—eventually—there will be overseas golf trips again. If you’d like help organizing one, you might want to reach out to a tour operator now, because it looks like 2022 is going to be extremely busy.

These five firms are an excellent place to start. The pandemic has been rough on them, as it has on most travel businesses, but they’re still standing and ready to help you build the trip of a lifetime.

Perry Golf is rooted in trips to Scotland but it also offers a wide menu of cruises in partnership with the Azamara line, including trips through the British Isles, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Kalos Golf is almost entirely cruise-based, with smaller ships than many—about 100 passengers—and an eye for luxury. 

Haversham & Baker Expeditions emphasizes small group travel to Britain, Ireland and Europe, using private buses and exclusive-use accommodations. Carr Golf and Celtic Golf are outstanding for Irish trips. In non-pandemic times, the former hosts multiple father-son and father-daughter tournaments each year and the latter has built a nice business out of pairing golf travel with big international events such as the Solheim Cup.

The truth is, any of these firms would be great help in planning a golf trip anywhere. Our advice: Contact them all to see what they’ve got and what they charge. And again, we wouldn’t delay. Because of the coronavirus, there’s a ton of pent-up demand. On top of that, the Open Championship will be held at St. Andrews in ’22, attracting all the more golfers while limiting the supply of tee times.

From Latin America to the South Pacific — and, of course, Scotland — here’s a list of seven international destinations perfect for a golf trip.

1. Scotland: The Birthplace of Golf

The Scottish seaside town of St. Andrews is known around the world as the birthplace of golf, and the iconic Old Course headlines most golfers’ bucket lists. Book a stay at the golf-inspired Rusacks St Andrews , where rooms come with views of the hallowed turf.

Scotland’s weather is known to fluctuate, but the golf season is typically April to September.

2. Ireland: A Links Paradise

Ireland is nicknamed the “green of dreams” and the island is home to more than 400 golf clubs. A third of the world’s natural links courses are here, and more than 240,000 golfers make the pilgrimage to Ireland each year to play on the unforgiving fairways.

In County Limerick, Adare Manor is a coveted stay for golfers. The championship golf course designed by golf architect Tom Fazio will host the 2027 Ryder cup.

While most courses are open all year round, the best time for Ireland golf trips is from April to October. In peak summer, it stays light out until 10 p.m., which means you can play a couple of rounds and make the most of your golf vacation.

3. Fiji: Luxury Private Island Greens

Fiji is a draw for all types of vacationers, from honeymooners to scuba divers. But it’s also a golfer’s paradise in the South Pacific, with more than a dozen courses scattered across the islands and stunning fairways lined with palm trees.

For those coming for golf, Viti Levu, the main island, is home to three championship courses: Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course, which is located at the InterContinental Resort and comes with Pacific Ocean views, Denarau Golf & Racquet Club, and The Pearl South Pacific Golf Course.

Fun fact: The country has even produced one of the world’s top golfers, Vijay Singh, who fell in love with the game at the Nadi Airport Golf Course.

4. New Zealand: Dramatic Scenery

In New Zealand, golf is the sport with the highest participation among both men and women. The country has more than 400 golf courses, and the dramatic landscapes — from craggy, isolated coastlines tracing the greens to soaring mountains in the alpine areas — make it one of the most idyllic destinations for golfers.

Renowned architect Tom Doak has said “no country has seen its golf courses improve more over the past 20 years than New Zealand.” One of his famous New Zealand courses is Cape Kidnappers, which is perched above the ocean on clifftops, and built on ridge-and-valley landscape.

A 90 minute drive from Auckland (or 25 minutes via helicopter), Te Arai Links , which has two links golf courses along the coastline is also a sought-after destination. One course was designed by Doak, and the other is from Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. In between tee times, the area is known for its surf breaks and lively nearby market towns, Mangawhai and Matakana, as well as its vineyards and olive groves.

October through April is considered high season, and golfers will pay less the other times of year.

5. Mexico: Mountain, Desert And Ocean Landscapes

Los Cabos and the Baja Peninsula have long dominated as one of the best golf destinations in not just Latin America, but the world, thanks to its mountain-desert-ocean landscape, gentle sea breezes, and a collection of cacti-studded courses designed by some of the world’s greatest golf architects, like Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Greg Norman and Robert Trent Jones, Jr.

In Loreto, which is on the Eastern coast of Baja California Peninsula, golfers can tee off in a UNESCO World Heritage site when they play a round at Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto by Danzante Bay, which overlooks the turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez. Travelers can book packages Unlimited Golf or Spa that comes with unlimited rounds for three days.

Golf continues to grow and get better throughout Mexico, with more than 200 courses to play. Beyond the Baja Peninsula, some other top golf spots in Mexico include the courses dotting the Pacific Coastline and in the Riviera Maya, like El Camaleón, an 18-hole, Greg Norman-designed course that moves through tropical jungle, mangroves, and past freshwater canals. It’s also the first PGA Tour Course in Latin America.

6. Vietnam: A Fast-Growing Golf Destination

For golfers looking for the next ‘it’ destination, turn your attention to Vietnam, where some of the world’s best golf architects are designing courses in the mountains, jungles, and along its coastline. Before 2020, there were about 80 golf courses in Vietnam, many attached to luxury resorts. By 2025, more than 200 courses will be built out.

Golfers can find year-round golf in Vietnam, heading into the highlands like Dalat for a cool mist and mountain breezes and hitting and booking tee times in Ho Chi Minh City and Southern Vietnam throughout the year. November to April is dry and cool in Northern Vietnam, and the same goes for Central Vietnam from February to May.

Hoina Shores Golf Club , designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., is a must-play for any golf enthusiast visiting Vietnam. It’s located within the $4 billion Hoiana Casino and Resort development on the Vietnamese coast south of Danang.

7. Mauritius: Bucket List Golf Destination

What to do if you or a loved one gets in trouble while travelling overseas

Each year millions of Australians jet off overseas to explore different places, enjoy other cultures and see the world. 

But sometimes things go wrong. 

From health issues to natural disasters, unexpected civil unrest or serious crimes, there can be real risks in travelling the globe. 

Here's what the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and University of Queensland tourism expert Jie Wang recommend to do when you are concerned for the welfare of a loved one overseas. 

Where do you start if you need help? 

A DFAT spokesperson says there are several steps you can take when you are concerned about the welfare of a loved one.

They recommended:  

• Try to make contact directly, through all possible channels
• Check their social media accounts for any recent updates
• Contact their friends or travel companions, or others who may know their movements such as their bank, their travel agent or their mobile phone provider
• File a missing person's report at your local police station in Australia for someone who is missing overseas
• Contact the Consular Emergency Centre

"Australians in need of urgent consular assistance can call the 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre on +61 2 6261 3305 from overseas or 1300 555 135 in Australia," the spokesperson said.

DFAT's official travel advice website SmartTraveller outlines how to act on different welfare concerns.

If the concern is kidnapping — it is important to report the crime to the local authorities and contact DFAT's emergency centre. 

Dr Wang said it was crucial to provide DFAT with accurate information when communicating with the department. 

She said it was important to avoid listening to confusing information from outside sources and stay in touch with your DFAT contact for the best information. This can also be essential when making a travel insurance claim. 

What is consular assistance?

If help is needed, DFAT may provide what is called consular assistance. This refers to help and advice from diplomatic agents of the country the person in trouble is travelling in. 

This may include maintaining contact with families and local authorities where an Australian has been reported missing to police.

There are circumstances where you don't have a right to consular assistance. 

According to SmartTraveller, these include when: 

• Your actions were illegal
• You've deliberately or repeatedly acted recklessly or negligently
• You put yourself or others at risk
• You've demonstrated a repeated pattern of behaviour requiring multiple instances of consular assistance previously

The Australian government also will not pay ransoms, as SmartTraveller outlines: "Ransom payments to kidnappers, many of whom are associated with terrorist groups, can be used to fund subsequent terrorist attacks."

In the 2022-23 financial year, DFAT assisted in 8,471 consular cases. Of those, 3,160 were related to welfare or other serious matters. 

The most common destinations for consular assistance were Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, the United States and Vietnam.

Dr Wang said consular assistance can also differ depending on the two nations' relationship. 

What does travel insurance cover? 

It is often said if you can't afford travel insurance you can't afford to travel.

What this does cover depends on the level of insurance you have purchased, but typically travel insurance will be for health concerns overseas or to cover lost, stolen or damaged baggage and valuables.

While some insurers will provide emergency assistance, Dr Wang says it is important to not rely solely on travel insurance.

"Insurance can only give you monetary support when we need it sometimes," she said.

"[It] can't save our lives and it can't protect our health.

"Therefore, we also need to consider taking vaccines, getting professional advice before you travel."

What do the travel warnings mean? 

Australia's travel advice is divided into four levels: 

• Level 1 — Exercise normal safety precautions
• Level 2 — Exercise a high degree of caution
• Level 3 — Reconsider your need to travel
• Level 4 — Do not travel

Countries such as New Zealand, Japan and the US fall into level 1 while countries such as the United Kingdom and Mexico fall into level 2. 

The reason for exercising a high degree of caution can vary. Peru is listed in level 2 due to a high level of crime, France is due to the threat of terrorism and Indonesia is due to security risks.

Dr Wang said that it is difficult to accurately assess an individual risk level for countries — which is why the advice is so broad. 

Risk for different countries can be impacted by disability, age, gender and religion. 

She said these destinations will highlight certain parts of the country and ignore problems like crime. 

"A lot of the time travel agencies or local destinations don't want to talk a lot about the safety issues, their concern is they only sell the best bit of the destination," she said.

For people who do travel to Level 3 countries such as Egypt or Pakistan or Level 4 countries like Russia or Belarus, Dr Wang said it was up to the individual to take responsibility for ignoring the warning. 

SmartTraveller advises that if you get into trouble in Level 4 countries the Australian government may not be able to help as the ability to provide consular assistance in these destinations is extremely limited. 

What can I do to avoid getting in trouble? 

Dr Wang says preparation is key. 

"Tourists need to take ... responsibility and protect themselves," she said. 

She said this particularly applies to young men. 

Check the SmartTraveller website for information on things like health risks that can be mitigated by vaccination or avoiding tap water. 

"There is lots of information online, so tourists need to check information beforehand and understand where the danger areas, what activity or behaviours need to be avoided in some [parts] of the destination," she said. 

She also said it was important to check the country's laws where different activities might be illegal or regulated differently in Australia. 

"I think tourists need to raise their awareness of multiple risks," she said.

"People try to go overseas to travel and enjoy new adventures.

"However, both the tourist and the family members need to work together to form a risk plan before they travel and have all the action prepared to protect themselves."

PGA TOUR winner, beloved Masters analyst Peter Oosterhuis dies at age 75

Peter Oosterhuis was probably best known to U.S. sports fans as the longtime voice of the 17th hole at Augusta National during CBS’s annual coverage of the Masters. Golf fans, however, knew that “Oosty” was worth a listen because he could really play. The Englishman was a member of six consecutive Ryder Cup teams, first representing Great Britain and Ireland in 1971 and later competing alongside continental Europeans in the biennial tournament. Among the Americans Oosterhuis beat in singles are World Hall of Fame members Arnold Palmer, Johnny Miller and Gene Littler, and he defeated Palmer twice.

Oosterhuis parlayed his stylish game and charming British accent into a long announcing career with several networks, including CBS, for more than 15 years following his playing career. Oosterhuis retired from broadcasting in 2014 to deal with the effects of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Oosterhuis passed away peacefully this morning, one day shy of what would have been his 76th birthday.

Born in London in 1948 as the country was rebuilding from World War II, Oosterhuis enjoyed a stellar amateur golf career; he became the first schoolboy to represent Great Britain & Ireland at the Walker Cup and was a member of the Eisenhower Trophy team. He turned professional in the late 1960s and won the 1969 Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award on the DP World Tour. Oosterhuis dominated the Tour by winning the Harry Vardon Trophy as leading its Order of Merit in four consecutive seasons (1971-74).

After Oosterhuis won tournaments in Africa and Europe – including the national opens of France (twice, in 1973 and 1974) and Spain, seven DP World Tour titles and three on the Southern Africa Tour all told – he made his way to the States. He qualified for the PGA TOUR and played full time from 1975 to 1986.

Oosterhuis made his PGA TOUR debut at the 1971 Masters Tournament and eventually went on to play in 343 official tournaments. Oosterhuis is still tied for the all-time lead in Ryder Cup singles victories for either side with six.

In 1981, Oosterhuis enjoyed his best PGA TOUR season as he finished 28th on the final money list. He had been a steady money-winner, with three runner-up finishes to his credit, before he broke through at the Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club outside Toronto. Trailing by three shots entering the final round, Oosterhuis fired a final-round 70 in difficult conditions to beat Jack Nicklaus, Bruce Lietzke and Andy North by one shot. The first-prize check of $76,500 was more than he had earned in any previous season.

“What a way to win after watching those big names come in and mine still staying up there on the leaderboard,” he said. “I am fortunate that the course is so tough. It allows no one to make a powerful finish.”

The following year, he finished runner-up for the second time at The Open Championship, falling to Gary Player by four shots at Royal Lytham and St. Anne’s. Oosterhuis never won again, though, and eventually explored other careers in the game.

From 1987 through 1993, Oosterhuis was the Director of Golf at Forsgate Country Club in Jamesburg, NJ and famed Riviera Country Club outside Los Angeles. After working as the lead analyst for The Golf Channel’s incipient coverage of the DP World Tour, Oosty became a fixture on CBS’s broadcasting of the PGA TOUR, working the Masters from 1997 through 2014.

Having moved with his second wife Ruth Ann to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he was a member at Quail Hollow Club, he retired from broadcasting following CBS’s coverage of the 2014 PGA Championship and later revealed he was battling with early-onset Alzheimer’s. He is survived by his wife, sons Rob and Rich, stepsons Byron and Matt and four grandchildren Peyton, Turner, Sutton and Lachlan.

Only a couple of tournaments remain on the pga tour calendar before the second major championship of the season.

The PGA Tour returns to its regularly scheduled programming with 72 holes of stroke play this week at the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson. Welcoming the normal cast of characters to TPC Craig Ranch for the fourth straight season, the PGA Tour embarks on its final full-field event before the PGA Championship in two weeks' time.

Headlining the action is the man who is still missing the Wanamaker Trophy from his major championship collection: Jordan Spieth. The native Texan has been experiencing a middling 2024 thus far with inconsistencies from week to week appearing in his game. While he has put together quality starts, he has failed to contend in the bigger tournaments, namely with his missed cut at the Masters a couple of starts ago.

Spieth will hope to start heading in the right direction at the very event he made his PGA Tour debut many years ago. He is joined in the field by a number of his fellow Dallas-area residents, including Si Woo Kim and Tom Kim. Both of the Kims look primed to contend in their backyards, especially Si Woo, who finished just one stroke shy of the title in last year's tournament.

Last year's winner, Jason Day, is set to defend his title while two-time champion K.H. Lee hopes to grab his third Byron Nelson title in the last four years. Adam Scott, Sungjae Im and Min Woo Lee are among the rest of the large international contingent to round out the action.
