World’s Happiest People

Denmark is a fairy tale land where its people are among the happiest on earth. Although small in size, Denmark offers big reasons to visit. It’s situated between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea and has over 4,500 miles of dramatic coastline. Its capital city of Copenhagen is considered the “culinary front runner and ‘hot-spot’ food destination of Europe,” and holds culinary delights to match the magnificent coastal scenery.

Destination Must-See's

Denmark ms1

Architecture:

Denmark is an architectural treat unto itself with influences originating with the Vikings, but changing over the years with Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles influencing it as well. It wasn’t until the 1960s when Danish architects entered the world scene with Functionalism, which is what most of us envision when we think of Danish architecture today. The Danish are indeed world leaders in architecture and visitors have many treats in store for them.

Denmark ms2

Copenhagen:

Copenhagen was founded as a Viking fishing village in the 10th century. Since the 20th century, it has been a thriving city and has become a large metropolitan area. It offers everything you could wish for. Enjoy world-class museums and cuisine. Marvel at magnificent contemporary architecture and be romanced by fairy tale streets with brightly colored houses.

Denmark ms3

Fredericksborg Castle:

Built in the Dutch Renaissance style by King Christian IV in the 17th century, Frederiksborg Palace is situated north of Copenhagen. There you’ll find the Museum of National History which exhibits the history of Denmark through a large collection of portraits, historical paintings and modern art. It’s surrounded by an enchanting baroque style garden.

Denmark ms4

The Little Mermaid:

This bronze statue by Edvard Eriksen sits on a rock by the water at Langelinie promenade in Copenhagen. It depicts The Little Mermaid from the famous story by Hans Christian Andersen, but it’s more than just that. It’s a legendary symbol and landmark of Copenhagen that attracts over one million visitors each year.

Destination Must-Do's

Denmark md1

Smørrebrød:

In Denmark, bread is a very important part of the table. Usually, it’s a very dark heavy whole grain rye. This marvelous bread forms the basis for Smørrebrød which is a type of open sandwich. It can have just about anything on it at all, but traditional toppings are pickled herring, different varieties of cheeses, sliced cucumber, tomato and boiled eggs, just to name a few. Try as many combinations of toppings as you can and you may just find a new favorite food to make at home.

Denmark md2

Go shopping:

Copenhagen is a shopper’s paradise! Shops are grouped together by trade so if you’re looking for something in particular, you’ll have an easier time finding it. While on your quest for that perfect souvenir, you can’t avoid absorbing more of this wonderful city’s atmosphere.

Denmark md3

Underwater bridge:

The Øresund Bridge links Denmark and Sweden. Opened in the year 2000, the bridge lets thousands of cars and trains cross between the two countries each year. Just as you’d expect from Scandinavian architecture, this bridge is a marvelous piece of engineering that also serves as a tunnel and an artificial island. You can see it disappear under the water to let ships pass from your airplane window before landing in Copenhagen, but you can also see it from the city’s beaches.

Denmark md4

Attention adventure seekers! You haven’t seen Copenhagen until you’ve seen it from a kayak out on the clean, calm waters of the harbor. See if you can find one of Copenhagen’s least known works of art—a series of ghostly underwater statues called Agnete and the Merman.

Denmark has a thriving design industry and shopping for unique things to bring home in Denmark is a lot of fun. Make sure there’s plenty of room in your suitcase.

Denmark Trip Package Itinerary

Kick off your vacation in the colorful, modern and cultural Copenhagen, capital of the Kingdom of Denmark. Upon your arrival, a friendly driver will meet you and your party at the airport and transport you to the hotel in complete comfort and style. After your hotel check in (and some much needed rest, perhaps), explore your surroundings and start discovering Copenhagen. On your second day, you will join an expert local guide who will introduce you to some of the famous landmarks in the city. The following day takes you on a daytrip which will introduce you to Royal Denmark, with a visit to several majestic castles in North Zealand: Kronborg Castle, a castle made famous as the setting of Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’, Fredensborg Palace, residence of the Danish royal family, and the ancient Frederiksborg Castle.

Leave Copenhagen, eastbound, on a truly scenic, lovely train ride to the seaport town of Esbjerg. The town is renowned for its art and Danish charm and you will have plenty of time to experience it all. The following day, take a short train ride to Ribe, where you will spend a full day. The town has been voted “Europe’s Best Big-Time Small Destination 2014”! Ribe is Denmark’s oldest town, home to a fascinating Viking museum and a well-preserved medieval center. Climb to the top of the town’s beautiful cathedral tower for lovely views of the region.

On your way back west, before arriving in Copenhagen, stop in Odense – Hans Christian Andersen’s home – for a day of Sightseeing in the ”capital” of Funen. Odense is full of charming high streets, lots of museums and activities, lovely green parks and much more. Spend the night there and return to Copenhagen the following day.

Scandinavia Tour FAQs

After landing at Keflavík Airport, you will travel to your hotel in Reykjavík. Located in the heart of Iceland’s capital city, Hotel Borg offers the best in both style and comfort. Following check-in, connect with your Tour Director before a visit to the Sky Lagoon. Relax in the warm waters of the geothermal lagoon and soak off your jet lag as your gaze upon incredible views of the North Atlantic. End your day with a gourmet kickoff dinner where you will get to know your fellow travelers and taste delicious Icelandic dishes. Your group tour of Iceland has officially started!

After breakfast, join a driving tour of Iceland’s capital. Notable sights include the famous Hallgrímskirkja Church, Harpa Concert Hall and the unique Sun Voyager sculpture. Following your tour, you will have free time to experience the city on your own. End your day with a delectable dinner and a drive to view the Northern Lights, if the skies are clear that night. If they are not, don’t worry. We will have many other opportunities!

Day 3 is dedicated to Iceland’s Golden Circle, which is made up of three must-see sights: Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir geothermal area and Thingvellir National Park. Nearby, at Fridheimar, you will enjoy a beautiful show with Icelanic horses and some organic, tomato-based delicacies as well. Following your guided tour of the Golden Circle, we will drive to Landeyjahöfn harbor and board a ferry to the Westman Islands. The short 45-minute boat ride will give you a new perspective of Iceland’s south coast. When the ferry docks on the main island, Heimaey, you might even spot a brave sheep grazing on the rocky cliffs surrounding you! Enjoy a delectable dinner at Hotel Vestmannaeyjar, your cozy accommodation for the evening.

Our private tours allow travelers to explore Scandinavian destinations with programs offering a great balance between pre-arranged activities and free time to explore. When implementing one of our private programs for you, we handle all the logistics involved, including: hotels, airport transfers, transportation from city to city and all guided activities and excursions. You will not be with a Tour Director throughout the program, but you will enjoy a number of sightseeing experiences led by experienced local guides. We can work with your desired dates, provided that availability exists at the many services involved in your program. This option is ideal for travelers who enjoy traveling independently and with a higher degree of flexibility to explore each location on their own.

Technically, Scandinavia refers primarily to Norway, Denmark and Sweden. When thinking of Nordic Countries, add to the list Finland and Iceland as well. Discover Scandinavia Tours can take you to any location in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. Currently we also offer extensions in Estonia, which is of particularly convenient access when visiting Finland, given that Tallinn – Estonia’s beautiful capital – can be reached by a short ferry ride from Helsinki.

Simple: just call us at  800-936-2814  and talk to one of our Scandinavia specialists. Alternatively, you can email us at [email protected]

If you are interested in a group tour, you can book any departure as long as there are seats available (but remember: we have a maximum of 12 seats per departure, so booking early is recommendable). If you want a private tour, you can book as far as 2 years in advance. For last-minute travelers, please keep in mind that we need a minimum of 30 days to implement a private program.

With our group tours of Scandinavia you can choose from a number of fixed departures throughout the year. If you need more flexible dates, our private tours allow us to work with any dates you have in mind, provided that we find adequate availability at all hotels and other services included in your particular program.

Please note that at this time not all our destinations offer headsets due to supplier limitations.
  • The water is safe to drink throughout your tour unless posted otherwise.
  • This tour includes three dinners. Included meals may be plated set menus, buffet or family style depending on the location. Dinners include one glass of beer, wine, or soft drink and water, coffee and tea.
  • Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
  • Sweden's famous meatballs are typically served with a brown sauce and tart lingonberry jam. Smoked salmon and pickled herring are popular eats, especially atop a crisp bread. Snack on the country's many kinds of pastry and breads during fika, a social coffee hour that occurs mid-morning and mid-afternoon.
  • Norwegian cuisine is varied, offering something for every traveler. Lamb is the most traditional meat, but you’ll also find everything from goose to deer being served in Norway. Seafood lovers will enjoy the country's array of smoked salmon, shellfish, pickled herring, and scrod. Typical meals often incorporate grains, locally-produced cheeses, fresh produce, and wild berries.
  • When in Denmark, try the beloved open-faced sandwich called smørrebrød: a slice of rye bread topped with local favorites that could include smoked fish, prawns, mayonnaise, horseradish, or caviar. The country is also known for the popular Carlsberg and Tuborg beers.
  • On the tour extension, Icelandic cuisine relies on traditional, locally sourced ingredients from the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding mountains. Both fresh and dried fish, including herring, cod, and shark, are important culinary staples. Other must-tries include Icelandic lamb, which is considered to be some of the best in the world, as well as pylsa (hot dogs), and skyr cheese.
  • The included lunch at Fridheimar Farm on the tour extension typically includes the Friðheimar Tomato Soup served on a buffet with sour cream, home baked bread, cucumber salsa, butter and fresh herbs. Beverages include unlimited water and one soft drink.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10-$12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • If you are traveling to multiple countries with different currencies and the same Tour Director, ask them what currency they prefer for their tip.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the Swedish krona in Sweden, the Norwegian krone in Norway, and the Danish krone in Denmark (and the Icelandic krona in Iceland on the tour extension).
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers. We also recommend keeping coins in the local currency on hand, as some public bathrooms may charge a fee for use.
  • To ensure you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend you download the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. The app is free and provides important deadlines, entry requirements, your detailed itinerary, packing tips and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the chat feature in the app.
  • Wifi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wifi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will be leading your group throughout your journey in Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
  • You will have a different Tour Director for your tour extension in Iceland than on your main tour.
  • The role of the Tour Director is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is our on tour emergency support team.
  • Our extensive network of offices around the world, and our integration of ISO 31000: Risk Management Guidelines, help our dedicated 24/7 Emergency Service teams anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible and iterative way.
  • This team supports travelers and Tour Directors using a combination of extensive training, simulations, incident response planning, and decades of experience to help manage emergencies if they arise, ranging from personal health concerns or injuries to major world events.
  • As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
  • Sweden, Norway, and Denmark are one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and six hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • On the tour extension, Iceland is one hour behind GMT and four hours ahead of ET.
  • When it’s noon in New York, it's 6pm in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark and 4pm on the tour extension in Iceland.
  • When you travel with EF Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit, and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can make an enormous socio-economic impact to communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at local businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • EF Go Ahead Tours encourages our travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single use plastics. You can avoid single use plastics by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
  • Environment: On this tour, we recommend the use of a reusable water bottle, as the local drinking water is safe for travelers. Your Tour Director can provide additional guidance on local water standards. Make sure to bring a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastics.
  • Environment: When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.

Colour, castles and eco communities: your travel guide to Denmark’s vibrant cities, towns and islands

Danish travel is quite literally a breath of fresh air, whether you’re after walkable cities or island living

You may think you know Denmark, but the regions of this Scandinavian archipelago have their distinct attractions – from award-winning gastronomy and sustainability programmes to Viking world heritage sites and wilderness sanctuaries. What’s more, from small towns to major islands, everything’s connected via cycle-friendly train, bridge or ferry routes, making it easy to hop around.

Lively cities with small-town charm

These places may be home to Denmark’s largest communities, but the chilled vibes and outdoor lifestyle make for slow, relaxing city breaks

Your rainbow panorama.Your rainbow panorama by Olafur Eliasson at ARoS Aarhus Museum of Art

Aarhus had a big moment in the sun when it was named European capital of culture in 2017 – and it hasn’t stopped shining since. On the east coast of Jutland, the city’s circular “Your rainbow panorama” walkway above the ARoS art museum creates a dramatic impact on the skyline, while the singularly innovative urban architecture at the Aarhus Ø (redeveloped docklands) is silver and sleek. The Moesgaard Museum has a range of exhibitions charting human evolution within its impressive partly subterranean concrete design – including one of the world’s best preserved Iron Age bog bodies, Grauballe Man. The Infinite Bridge , a circular wooden structure originally conceived as a temporary art installation, is now reconstructed each spring in Aarhus Bay, allowing walkers to go on seaside promenades. Share in the Danish love of the big outdoors at Mols Bjerge National Park at Djursland, and hire your own guide to kayak or hike within the 18,000-hectare (44,480-acre) reserve.

Viking ships once sailed along the Limfjord in northern Jutland, but the city of Aalborg , with its vibrant old centre, now sits at the vanguard of design. The home town of Jørn Utzon, architect of the iconic Sydney Opera House, Aalborg’s waterfront Utzon Centre celebrates global architecture through exhibitions and education. Its neighbour, the impressively slick Musikkens Hus , has cutting-edge technology in gorgeously designed auditoriums for the best listening experience. After taking your fill of creativity, you might be in need of something more substantial – head to the international street food market at Køkkenfabrikken , or to the Aalborg Tower , which serves up edifying 360-degree views alongside Danish cuisine.

Copenhagen might be the Danish capital, but it’s a highly walkable (not to mention cycleable) city filled with harbour swimming zones and relaxed waterfront cafes – and, of course, many of the world’s very best restaurants . Wander at will through foodie hotspots in what are known collectively as the “bros”: Nørrebro, Østerbro and Vesterbro, go shopping along the pedestrianised Strøget, then make a beeline for Nyhavn, the picturesque, historic centre of Copenhagen, with its harmoniously coloured 16th and 17th century townhouses and permanently moored tall ships. Take a canal tour from here to the iconic Little Mermaid statue – but be warned, she really is very little, and best viewed up close, on foot!

Other highlights of Copenhagen include the Tivoli Gardens amusement park , the 17th-century Round Tower (Europe’s oldest working observatory), as well as Amalienborg , home to the Danish royal family. Make sure you time your visit for the daily changing of the guard, and listen to the sound of boots reverberating over the ancient courtyard cobblestones. Amalienborg’s so laid-back, you can stroll right up to photograph the beautiful rococo four-palace complex. Cross the water to explore the western side of the Copenhagen harbourfront and enjoy a range of street food stands at Reffen and The Bridge Street Kitchen . While you are on this side, take greater care at Freetown Christiania, where you need to heed the written advice on entry regarding safety – but it’s a very liberal, alternative-living enclave that’s worth taking a guided wander through.

On the island of Funen, the cultural city of Odense has produced two of Denmark’s most famous artists – the composer Carl Nielsen and Hans Christian Andersen . A whole multimedia experience opened in 2021, inviting visitors to fully immerse in the world and characters of Andersen’s fairy tales, while Nielsen’s life is celebrated in a museum and a new sound-enhanced walking trail , which is presented only in Danish but still absolutely worth it for the music. The Funen Village , where 18th- and 19th-century Danish history is brought to life – something the Danes do so well – is not to be missed. Or visit Odense in the summer for the Tinderbox music and international film festivals.

Small towns and islands with big ideas

With so many islands and small towns dotted over the Danish archipelago, there’s something on offer for every kind of visitor

Sustainable and naturally wonderful locations Samsø , in the Kattegat Sea between Jutland and Zealand, is the sunny isle that’s at the heart of eco living. Cycle around the island that was the first to generate 100% of its electricity from reneweable sources, thanks to people-power , and journey there on a new electric ferry (in operation from January 2025). Known for its horticulture too, try the typically Danish open sandwich, kartoffelmad – showcasing the island’s fabulous new potatoes, and one of the few vegetarian smørrebrød . Ærø , the idyllic, small island south of Funen, also boasts world-leading green technology, spearheaded by its community-driven initiatives.

For a taste of authentic laid-back Danish island life, though, Bornholm , in the Baltic Sea, is just perfect. A haven for summerhouse living and wild winter swimming , the fishing villages here have traditional herring smokehouses, not to mention Kadeau , perhaps the world’s only Michelin-starred restaurant in a converted beach shack – find it near the fine white sands and grassy dunes of Dueodde beach.

Windswept and beautifully wild, Skagen is Denmark’s northernmost town, poking out at the top of North Jutland, where the North Sea and Baltic waters meet. With its natural setting and oh-so-perfect light, you will be just as inspired as the French realism-influenced Skagen painters who, in the late 19th century, depicted the beauty of the seascapes here. Cosy up with a bit of hygge in the town’s quaint museums and cafes, after a walk over the dunes.

Family-friendly, educational and Unesco heritage locations It’s fair to say that the entire country of Denmark is family-friendly, but for a bit of extra fun, head to Billund ’s Legoland , the original resort built from coloured bricks. Billund is actually the town where Lego was invented by local carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen. Initially fashioning the toys from wooden blocks in the early 1930s, he moved on decades later to injection-moulded plastic. And the rest is history.

Just 45 minutes north of Copenhagen, the beautiful town of Helsingør, or Elsinore , is known to be William Shakespeare’s inspiration for Hamlet. At Kronborg Castle , where the Bard’s work is performed in scenes around the castle and grounds, you can mingle with the actors. With glorious sea views too, the old-world charm of the small town’s timber-framed houses and narrow streets make it a wonderful place to while away a lazy afternoon.

Denmark’s oldest town, Ribe , is one of the best places to experience Viking history. Stretching back to approximately AD710, the street plaques and local guides tell the story of this fascinating pre-Christian settlement. The tower at Ribe Cathedral looks out over the Unesco heritage Wadden Sea National Park and the island of Mandø , a newly certified Dark Sky Park, where seal and bird life abound.

Roskilde on the main island of Zealand is only a short drive from metropolitan Copenhagen, yet it’s full of Viking heritage. Visit the Viking Ship Museum and the medieval, Unesco-listed gothic cathedral , the resting place of 40 Danish kings and queens, including the infamous 10th-century Viking king Harald Bluetooth, who united Denmark and Norway.

At Jelling , the Viking rune stones are part of Denmark’s long history and are Unesco world heritage listed, alongside the newest entry – the country’s five Viking ring fortresses. Spanning the country from Aggersborg near Løgstør to Trelleborg close to Copenhagen, it’s possible to drop in on at least one of them, whichever part of Denmark you choose to visit next.
