Hari Budha Magar creates history as he successfully conquers Everest

hari tourism

At around 3 pm on May 19th, Hari stood victorious atop the world’s tallest mountain as the first ever double above-knee amputee to scale Mt Everest .

Thirteen years after losing his legs in Afghanistan, Hari has proved disability is no barrier to reaching the 8,849-metre peak.

Hari’s climb was made possible by a world-class team of Nepalese climbers , led by expedition leader Krish Thapa. At the top, Hari shouted “We did it!”, a reference to, and in recognition of, the team effort that enabled this success.

Over a satellite phone call, made possible by NSSL Global GmbH to his team off the mountain, he added; “That was tough. More complicated than I could have ever imagined. We just had to carry on and push for the top, no matter how much it hurt or how long it took. If I can climb to the top of the world, anyone, regardless of their disability, can achieve their dream. No matter how big your dreams are, no matter how challenging your disability, with the right mindset anything is possible.

“When things got tough it was the thought of my amazing family and everyone who's helped me get onto the mountain that pushed me to the top. Without the support of so many this expedition simply wouldn't have been possible.”

Hari is now safely down at basecamp and is urging supporters from around the world to dig deep as he raises money for five veteran charities including Team Forces/Team Army, The Gurkha Welfare Trust , Pilgrim Bandits Charity, Blesma, The Limbless Veterans, and On Course Foundation, to raise over £884,900, the height of Everest plus two zeros.

Tourism grew rapidly during the 1960s and 1970s, but it was soon realised that this growth was not without costs. The social, cultural, economic, and environmental impacts of tourist growth became subjects of serious study and research, and entered in the policy agendas of national and international organisations. Tourism is no longer considered a ‘clean industry’ as opposed, say, to heavy manufacturing. Tourism planning is advocated as a tool for controlling the negative impacts of tourism development and for protecting the very same resources upon which the profitability of the industry depends. However, many tourism development studies and plans as well proposed policies have not been (and still are not) based on rigorous quantitative and integrated analyses of the several dimensions of tourism, neither have they placed the impacts of tourism development within the broader spatio-temporal context of their occurrence. There are many reasons for this omission, the analytical complexity of the task and the lack of proper data being among the most important of them. This chapter focuses on the environmental impacts of tourism and proposes an integrated framework for their analysis and evaluation. It is a revised version of the original chapter which appeared seven years ago in the first edition of this volume. It keeps the essential methodological orientation and gist but attempts to refine the integrated modelling framework, which was proposed originally. Moreover, it addresses explicitly the question of sustainability, which, in the meantime, became a central concern in all discussions about tourism development. The first section of the chapter reviews briefly the literature on tourism and its environmental impacts and identifies the main methodological issues in their analysis. The second section details the proposed methodological framework while the last section discusses its advantages and drawbacks.

The Esmeris Farm in Liliw, Laguna (Daang-Hari Campgrounds)

After a very long hiatus, I finally get the chance to update this blog for a new travel series. It was a tough year for everyone and we are still dealing with the global pandemic, forcing us all to stay at home to prevent the deadly virus from spreading. After several months, the tourism in the country is starting to get back into shape. Travels are now allowed in most parts of the country but everyone is still required to follow health protocols. Everyone is still required to practice social distancing and to wear face masks. Some popular attractions even require tourists to present a medical certificate to prove that they are healthy and the result of their swab tests are negative.

Our camp site in Bay Laguna

Unfortunately, the weather was not really cooperating with us. It was  a tough night and even tougher the next day. It was raining non-stop and we had no other option but to compromised. We were supposed to visit at least three exciting locations in Laguna but we only ended up visiting one ~ the Esmeris Farm in Liliw.

While most people will hit Laguna for their wonderful hot springs and resorts, Esmeris farm offers a new attraction. It is almost hidden and visitors had to do minor trekking to reach the actual farm. The place is simple yet offers a serene atmosphere, a perfect place to unwind. It offers a lot of small attractions that are surprisingly IG-worthy (if that’s what you are rooting for). There are different variants of swings to try on, glamping tents, horseriding activities, and a stunning overview of Mount Banahaw and Mount San Cristobal protected landscape.

In 1931 Hari Hari on the West Coast became the landing site of the first solo Trans-Tasman flight. Moscow metro to be more tourist-friendly

A new floor sign system at the Moscow metro's Pushkinskaya station. Source: Vladimir Pesnya / RIA Novosti

For many years now, Moscow has lagged behind St. Petersburg when it comes to making life easy for tourists, especially where getting around the city is concerned. Whereas the northern capital installed English-language maps, signs and information points throughout its subway system in the late 2000s, the Russian capital’s metro remained a serious challenge for foreign visitors to navigate.

Recent visitors to Moscow may have noticed some signs that change is afoot, however. In many stations of the Moscow subway, signs have appeared on the floor – with large lettering in Russian and English – indicating the direction to follow in order to change lines. Previously, foreign visitors using the Moscow metro had to rely solely upon deciphering the Russian-language signs hanging from the ceilings.

Student volunteers help tourists find their way in Moscow

However, this new solution has a significant drawback. “The floor navigation is visible only to a small stream of people – fewer than three people per meter. During peak hours, this navigation will simply not be noticed,” said Konstantin Trofimenko, Director of the Center for Urban Transportation Studies.

One of the biggest problems for tourists in the Russian capital remains the absence of English translations of the names of subway stations in the station vestibules and on platforms. The Department of Transportation in Moscow has not commented yet as to when this problem will be solved. However, Latin transliterations of station names can already be found in the subway cars themselves.

Finding the right exit

At four of the central stations – Okhotny Ryad, Teatralnaya, Ploshchad Revolyutsii, Lubyanka and Kuznetsky Most – the city authorities have now installed colorful stands at the exits with schematic diagrams of the station’s concourse and surrounding area, which provide information about the main attractions and infrastructural facilities.

The schematic diagrams are the work of British specialists from the City ID and Billings Jackson Design firms, who have already implemented successful projects in New York and London.

According to Alexei Novichkov, expert at the Design Laboratory at the Higher School of Economics, the design of these information booths raises no objections: The color solutions, font, layout and icons are consistent with international standards.

Kudankulam

However, the stands do have some shortcomings. “Many questions are raised about the fact that the developers of these maps did not apply orientation to the north, and have provided layouts of the surrounding areas with respect to the exits,” says Novichkov. “A system like that is used for road navigators, but most of the ‘paper’ guides and maps are oriented strictly to north. The subway map is also oriented to north, so people may become confused.”

Muscovites and foreign visitors are generally positive about these navigation elements, with most of them citing the numbered exits from the subway as the most useful feature.

The fact is that many Moscow subway stations have several exits. One of the busiest central stations of the Moscow subway in particular, Kitay-Gorod, has more than a dozen exits. Previously, these exits were differentiated from each other only with signs in Russian referring to the names of streets and places of interest to which they led – making it easy for tourists and those with poor navigation skills to get confused.

Now, when making an appointment to meet a friend, instead of struggling to find the right spot when they tell you: “I'll meet you at the exit to Solyanka Street,” you can just propose to meet under a specific exit number.

“I’ve lived in Moscow for seven years,” says Angelika, a designer from Voronezh, “but I still don’t always know where to go to find the place I need, so the new schematic diagrams will be very useful. Previously, some subway stations had maps, but not with so much detail.”

Teething problems

Foreigners, meanwhile, focus their attention on other elements. “It is good that the new information boards have QR-codes, which can be ‘read’ by smartphones,” says Florentina, a writer from Vienna. But there are also shortcomings. “The English font of the information on posters and in the captions to theaters and museums is too small – you have to come very close to see it well,” she says.

Pleasant encounters on the streets of Moscow

Florentina was also dissatisfied with the fact that such posters are not provided at all subway stations: “When I was trying to find Tsaritsyno Park (a museum and reserve in the south of Moscow) at a subway station with the same name, it turned out to be quite difficult,” she says.

“There are no maps with landmarks for other areas, such as those already in the city center. There were no clear pointers in the English language, and the passers-by I met did not speak in English, so they could not help me,” she adds.

Officials say that the navigation system is gradually being redeveloped and improved. According to Darya Chuvasheva, a press representative for the Department of Transport of Moscow, the introduction of a unified navigation system will take place in stages.

“By the end of 2014, the system will first appear on the first subway stations on the Circle Line. By the end of 2015, we plan to install the system at all major stopping points, subway stations and transport interchange hubs,” says Chuvasheva.
