On my first visit to The Bahamas, I fell in love with its postcard-perfect white sand beaches and blue waters — both literally inviting travelers to dip their toes in the sand and sea. Since then, I’ve visited multiple times by air and on cruises with friends, family, and most recently on a skip-generational vacation with my grandson.

Do you want to lay on its famous beaches or splash around doing water sports such as snorkeling, diving or parasailing? Maybe you’re a nature lover and prefer to take to its trails or visit its marine habitat, wildlife reserves, or national parks. Or perhaps you’d prefer to step back in time with a cultural walking tour, pose for pictures with its famous swimming pigs or indulge in a few days of fun and pampering at Atlantis Resort , The Bahamas’ most famous place to stay.

Yes! You can do all of that and more in The Bahamas. With so many Bahamian islands and so little time, I still have more to discover and share with my family.

Which Bahamas Islands Should I Visit

Nassau, bahamas.

New Providence Island, home to the capital city Nassau , is the most visited of all the Bahamas islands. It offers endless opportunities for attractions and entertainment for families. More than 70% of the country’s people live in Nassau; it is the liveliest of the Bahamas islands.

Just 179 miles southeast of Florida, Nassau is a popular cruise line port as well.

Explore Nassau on your own, or hire local tour operators for a downtown tour of Nassau, walking tours or day trips.

Paradise Island, Bahamas

Paradise Island is across the harbor from Nassau. It’s the home of the famous Atlantis Paradise Island Resort . We recommend spending at least a few nights of your Bahamas vacation at this luxury resort destination.

At Atlantis, you’ll find the thrilling Aquaventure waterpark. Home of The Current, an exhilarating river that is the opposite of lazy, with waves to ride and rapids to run. Or you can take the laid-back route and spend time on the miles of white sand beaches or chill at one of the many resort pools.

Or you can visit one of the many marine exhibits showcasing habitats such as lagoons, caves, coral formations and more.

Freeport, Bahamas

The second-largest Bahamian city is Freeport , located on Grand Bahama Island. This is the place to find upscale resorts, cultural and historical sites, 18 of the 28 species of native birds, and a delightful mix of local and international cuisine.

Make time to visit the island’s waterfront hub, Port Lucaya Marketplace. You’ll find lovely boutiques selling local Bohemian handmade goods, fine dining, and open-air entertainment in the colorful Count Basie Square.

This island is also home to a national treasure, Lucayan National Park , the second most visited park in The Bahamas. Known for its underwater cave system, it is also home to preserved remains of the Lucayan Indians, and a prime combination of natural environments including pine forests, mangroves creeks, and coral reefs. This national park is the place to discover the world-famous Gold Rock Beach.

Worth noting is that Grand Bahama Island was one of the hardest-hit islands when Hurricane Dorian made landfall in 2019. The bulk of the damage happened on the eastern and northern parts of Grand Bahama and recovery continues today. Freeport was spared the worst of the damage.

Bahamas Out Islands

While Nassau and Freeport are amazing, island hopping is also popular and affordable. These islands offer nature lovers seeking a quieter and more authentic Bahamian experience a peek at the 29 lesser populated islands and hundreds of cays.

The Bahamas Out Islands consist of (to name a few) Bimini, Pink Sands Beach, Harbour Island , Thunderball Grotto, Exumas, Dean’s Blue Hole, Long Island, Lighthouse Beach, Eleuthera, The Hermitage, and Cat Island. This travel guide is an excellent overview of these islands, their amenities, and things to do.

Cruise Lines’ Private Islands

Many of the cruise lines own or lease private islands in The Bahamas. These private islands offer a wide range of activities including snorkeling, fishing, swimming, sunbathing, waterslides and water parks, restaurants, and more, all reserved for the exclusive use of that cruise line’s passengers.

Coco Cay (pronounced co-co-key) is where you’ll find Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay private island. After a $250 million upgrade in 2019, the island has the Thrill Waterpark (home to the 135-foot-tall Daredevil’s Peak, which Royal Caribbean says is North America’s tallest water slide), an air balloon ride, a huge pool and a gorgeous upscale section. The private island is also used by Celebrity cruise ships.

Located on more than 40 acres, Carnival Cruise Line owns Princess Cays at the southern end of the island of Eleuthera and the nearby Half Moon Cay on Little San Salvador Island in The Bahamas.

Disney’s Private Island

Located near Great Abaco Island, the private island of Castaway Cay is an exclusive port for Disney Cruise ships. It’s always a fun stop for families. This 1,000-acre island was originally named Gorda Cay and is the scene for several popular movies including Splash  and  Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

When I sailed the Disney Dream several years ago with my daughter and teen and toddler granddaughters, Castaway Cay was our favorite excursion because there’s so much to do for all ages. While my teen granddaughter chilled on a beach chair, my daughter and I walked to the beach for my toddler granddaughter’s first ocean experience. She was hesitant at first but loved the cool turquoise ocean waters.

What is The Bahamas Weather Like?

Due to its tropical weather, The Bahamas is a year-round destination, with average temperatures between 75°F and 84°F (24°C-29°C) in both winter and summer. Early morning and night temps might warrant a light jacket. Summer is typically humid with hot sun. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Rain is more common in the summer and fall seasons. During the summer, consider indoor activities or shaded day trips to avoid the hot mid-afternoon sun.

When is the Best Time to Visit The Bahamas?

High season with higher rates is typically from mid-December to mid-April, when travelers book to escape the winter snows. If that’s your plan, book at least 3 months in advance for the best rates; Christmas and February might need more lead time.

The best deals in The Bahamas are available from mid-April to mid-December when the trade winds offer cool breezes.

When is The Bahamas Hurricane Season?

Hurricane season officially starts in June and lasts through November. But hurricanes rarely land in The Bahamas.

If you are traveling during hurricane season, travel insurance is highly recommended, although many Bahamian hotels also offer a Hurricane Cancellation Policy. (Please confirm with your desired hotel prior to booking.)

Is It Safe to Take My Family to The Bahamas?

As I said, I have visited The Bahamas multiple times with and without my family. I’ve never felt unsafe, and in fact, the locals have been nothing but kind and friendly.

However, as with any visit to foreign countries, travelers should always remain cautious and aware of their surroundings. Straying too far from tourist areas alone is rarely safe, especially late at night, no matter where you are.

Best Bahamas Resorts for Families

As a top tourist beach vacation destination, Freeport, Nassau, and Paradise Island offer every hotel chain imaginable.

Look for hotels that provide amenities for families such as free breakfast, suites, pools with a lifeguard, onsite restaurants, onsite activities for children (kids’ programs or crafts), or at the least, easy access to the surrounding area.

Atlantis Resort Paradise Island

Located on Paradise Island is the oceanside Atlantis Resort.  If your family is into adventures, get ready to explore all the outdoor and indoor fun within Atlantis’ acres and acres…and acres of property.

We have a whole post on all the family-friendly fun things to do at Atlantis Paradise Island and tips for getting the most out of a visit . Here, I’ll just highlight some of my family favorites: Aquaventure water park, pools, beaches, extensive marine habitats, golf course and Atlantis Casino .

Staying at the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort is a luxury resort and it comes at a luxury price. But my family has always thought it was worth every penny.

Comfort Suites Paradise Island

I stayed at the Comfort Suites Paradise Island on my most recent visit with my grandson, and I was pleasantly surprised. Although it’s not “fancy,” it checks all the boxes for family-friendly and affordable. My grandson loved chilling at the pool, and since the resort is tiny compared to Atlantis, I felt safe allowing him to venture to the pool alone for a short time.

Breakfast is included, and the pool-side restaurant serves delicious food.

Grand Hyatt Baha Mar Nassau

My grandson and I also stayed at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, part of a 1,000-acre resort complex. The Grand Hyatt Baha Mar offers impressive luxury, but for my grandson, the pools, the flamingos, and the pool featuring Dean’s Blue Hole were the highlights. He and another teen boy discovered this pool with its 8-foot and 15-foot waterfalls, stone gardens and a secluded grotto with a view of sea turtles and sharks.

This luxury resort is located on Nassau’s stunning Cable Beach. From the rooms to the dining, the service was impeccable at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar.  Just wow!

Freeport Family Friendly Hotels

I’m not as familiar with Freeport, but several of my friends recommended family-friendly Pelican Bay Hotel and Grand Lucayan , Bahamas.

Bahamas All-Inclusive Resorts

In Nassau, just across the bridge from Paradise Island and Atlantis, is the all-inclusive Melia Nassau Beach overlooking Cable Beach. This property, currently under renovation, offers a prime beachfront location just a few minutes from the city center, shops, restaurants, nightspots, museums and Lynden Pindling International Airport.

An all-inclusive option in Freeport is the Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach , located on the southern shore of Grand Bahama Island. It includes a kids’ club among other all-inclusive amenities.

For an intimate, totally all-inclusive island getaway with a laid-back vibe, there’s  Small Hope Bay Lodge on Andros Island. One of our favorite all-inclusive resorts, Small Hope Bay features 17 oceanfront cabins and down-home hospitality. Think of it as your personal resort with a fresh hot breakfast, and homemade lunch and dinner buffets.

Getting to The Bahamas

Spread across more than 500 miles and 700 islands, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, as the islands are officially named, is often referred to as a Caribbean Island. But the islands actually are located in the North Atlantic Ocean, just over 110 miles from southeast Florida.

With more than 40 non-stop flights from South Florida and less than a three-hour ferry ride from Fort Lauderdale, getting to The Bahamas for a family beach vacation is super easy and very quick.

Do I Need a Passport to Go to The Bahamas?

U.S. citizens are required to present a valid U.S. passport when traveling to The Bahamas. You will also be asked your anticipated date of departure from The Bahamas.

Those cruising to The Bahamas may use a Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) compliant document.

Bahamas Airports

Most travelers arrive in The Bahamas through Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau. A newer terminal services only U.S. flights. There is another terminal for domestic flights to the Out Islands and international flights from Canada, England, and other parts of the Caribbean.

Grand Bahama International Airport offers direct flights from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, and Nassau.

Leonard M. Thompson International Airport (formerly Marsh Harbour) in the Abaco Islands has daily flights from Nassau, perfect for island hopping. Several more Bahamas islands also offer island-hopping flights.

Cruising The Bahamas

The Bahamas are popular ports for cruise ship passengers. Cruise ship passengers comprise the largest percentage of day visitors to the islands each year.

In addition to stops at their private islands, Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian, and Disney Cruise Line arrive weekly at Nassau and Freeport.

Getting Around The Bahamas

The Bahamas were a British colony and remain part of the Commonwealth. That means cars drive on the left side of the road. Even though the country is pedestrian-friendly, and most drivers yield, be extra cautious and look multiple times so as not to step into traffic.

Transportation options include walking, taxis (only use official taxes marked by yellow license plates), renting a car, and smaller islands offer golf carts.

Fun Things to Do in Historic Downtown Nassau

Pirates of Nassau

Arrrrgh, matey! Are your kids intrigued by all things pirate? Then don’t miss a visit to the  Pirates of Nassau Interactive Museum , located in the heart of Olde Towne Nassau.

Mixing history with entertainment, begin your pirate adventure on a moonlit dock with the sounds of the lapping ocean and pirates singing nearby.

End your pirate adventure with a Blackbeard’s Revenge Pirate Cruise . Pirate cruises are campy fun for the whole family. There’s a kid-friendly daytime cruise and a dinner cruise with surprisingly good food.

Parliament Square

Rich in history and dating back to the late 1700s and early 1800s, the pink buildings of Parliament Square are a frequent stop for visitors in old Nassau. This unique Colonial-influenced architecture includes the House of Assembly, the Senate Building, and the Supreme Court of The Bahamas.

There is also a statue of Queen Elizabeth in the square.

Queen’s Staircase

Put on your walking shoes and climb the 66 steps of the Queen’s Staircase, named to honor Queen Victoria. Located on top of Elizabeth Avenue, this staircase was hewn out of limestone rock by slaves in 1793-1794.

When the humidity is at its highest, this staircase is a cool reprieve from the heat. The walkway is lined with palm and native trees. Then at the top, enjoy local shopping stalls and souvenirs.

Historic Forts of Nassau

Forts are a natural defense on an island with pirates and potential invasion as a constant threat.

History buffs will enjoy exploring Nassau with several forts including Fort Montagu on the eastern edge of downtown; Fort Fincastle, at the top of the Queen’s Staircase; and Fort Charlotte, farther west as the largest and most impressive fort, overlooking Paradise Island.

Distillery: Yo Ho Ho (And a Bottle of Rum)

Discover the “Spirit of the Bahamas” with a tour in historic downtown Nassau of the John Wattling’s Distillery. When in the Bahamas, of course, you must tour a rum distillery, right?

See how Bahamian Rum is hand-made and bottled and get a free sample of a pina colada.

Straw Market

Go shopping at the world-famous Straw Market.

Smack dab in the middle of Nassau’s high-end boutique shops, discover handmade Bahamian crafts, gifts, and souvenirs from straw hats to conch jewelry and hand-carved wood. The prices are reasonable, but haggling is expected. So bring your negotiating skills!

Junkanoo Beach is located just west of the Prince George Wharf (where cruise ships dock). Enjoy plenty of white sand to dig your toes into, and, of course, that beautiful turquoise-blue water. Stop at any number of local tiki bars and shops.

SheBuysTravel Tip: This is known as the “spring break beach,” so late afternoon into the evening might not be as family-friendly.

National Parks in The Bahamas

Since 2002, the National Park System of the Bahamas has doubled in size to reach 32 parks covering two million acres spread out across all The Bahamas islands.

Have you heard of The Bahamas’ delightful swimming pigs? A colony of wild pigs live on Big Major Cay Island and happily “pose for pictures.”

Pink Sands Beaches Bahamas

The 3-mile stretch of pink sand on Harbour Island gets its color from crushed shells.

Bahamian Food

Bahamian cuisine includes seafood such as fish, shellfish, lobster, crab, and conch, as well as tropical fruits, rice, peas, pork and pigeon peas (a sweeter version of green peas). Be sure to order fresh seafood, especially the local favorites: conch (any way you like), fried fish, and a Bahama Mama cocktail (a sweet rum drink with coconut flavoring).

The best place for tasting local Bahamian cuisine is Arawak Cay, a beachfront entertainment area just a short walk from Nassau Harbor, popular with locals and tourists alike.

Known to the locals as the “Fish Fry,” it began as beachfront shacks but has blossomed into a lively waterfront, home to many restaurants, bars, and outdoor eateries. Popular for lunch and dinner, it’s the place to sample local seafood, such as conch fritters and conch salad, grilled lobster tails and spicy grilled shrimp.

Sip local cocktails or the local beer, Kalik, or refreshing non-alcoholic coconut water. This is also home to an authentic Bahamian Fish Fry, made to order by vendors. You’ll also enjoy traditional junkanoo music and street performers.

Warm and Friendly Bahamas People

I say this often to my friends: Bahamians are truly warm, welcoming and friendly.

An excellent example of this is when my grandson and I stayed on Paradise Island and explored Marina Village. We dined at Frankie Gone Bananas and the local Bahamian server took a liking to my grandson. She gave him extra special attention, lots of laughs, and a big hug at the end of the night.

We also enjoyed a junkanoo parade that same evening, and the musicians selected my grandson out of the crowd to play an instrument and walk with them.

These are just two of many examples of friendly locals.

What is the Bahamas Currency?

U.S. dollars and Bahamian dollars are equal in value. US dollars are accepted in The Bahamas. If you want to exchange your money, do it before you get to The Bahamas for the best rate.

I’d definitely recommend traveling with cash and a major credit card. Taxis are cash-only, but some hotel bars and snack spots only accept cards or room charges. If you pay with US dollars, don’t be surprised to get your change in Bahamian dollars.

In tourist areas, if someone helps you out – guides you to your location, takes your picture for you, etc. – tips are expected.

What Language is Spoken in The Bahamas?

British English is the official language of The Bahamas and is spoken on virtually every island.

However, Bahamians also have their own tantalizing Creole dialect with accents, words and phrases influenced by their personal culture and heritage.

Bahamas History

The Bahamas, a former British colony, gained its independence in 1973. It’s now a member of the Commonwealth and its official name is the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

The Lucayan people were the original inhabitants of the island. Christopher Columbus famously landed in the Americas. He then infamously, tragically, and strategically annihilated those peaceful inhabitants.

Historically, The Bahamas remained a European-dominated settlement, marked by slave trade and piracy.

Today, the country is a blend of European and African heritage, and due to its perfect climate and picturesque beaches, The Bahamas relies heavily on tourism.

Havana is very walkable city and most hotels and guesthouses are centrally located to the major sites. Most tours spend at least three to four days in the island’s capital city, which is required to really soak up the local flavors and sights. Here are some of the ‘must-see’ sights around Havana:

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Old Havana is the epicenter of tourist activity in Havana. This is where the government has spent the most time and care in preserving the old Spanish colonial architecture to its original splendor. Building of varying bright, vivid colors pop from every corner, and the atmosphere is almost always very festive, with outdoor performers and street musicians. It’s worth wondering around for a few hours with little to no agenda as you’re sure to be entertained and engaged solely by the people watching.

Old Havana does have some worthy stops, including:

El Taller Experimental de Grafica. This artist workshop, founded in 1962 with the support of infamous revolutionary Che Guevara, is still a thriving studio today. Inside, artists of all ages delicately create traditional prints using decades old techniques. Prints are for sale and you can discuss the pieces of art direct with the artist, which is a special experience. Other top art galleries include Galeria Victor Manuel, Galeria Habana, and Fototeca de Cuba, which houses the country’s largest collection of photographs.

The Catedral de San Cristobal , located in a square on the edge of Old Havana, was completed in 1777. Explore its history and then relax with a coffee at one of the square’s many cafes.

Plaza de Armas is another popular square in Old Havana. Besides housing the Museo de la Ciudad (City Museum) it’s also a great place to grab a coffee or refreshing drink and watch the people go by.

La Bodeguita del Medio is a must-see for any Hemingway fan, as this was one of his most frequented haunts. This restaurant, famous since 1942, has played host to people like Pablo Neruda and Nat King Cole. They also have some great seafood and typical Cuban drinks like cubre libres, daiquiris and the like.

Plaza Vieja is yet another open space inside Old Havana but certainly worth a look on your tour itinerary. Surrounding the plaza are beautiful restored and colorful colonial buildings, with all of their architectural splendor still intact. The Casa del Conde Jaruco, built in the 18th century, displays some of the city's most beautiful stained glass windows.

El Floridita is another Hemingway favorite and the so-called birthplace of the daquiri. Although a bit touristy and cramped, these days, it is worth a stop on your walking tour around Old Havana to saddle up next to Hemingway himself (actually, a bronzed statue) and taste the drink that put this place on the map.

The Malecon  

This seaside promenade stretches for 8 kilometers around Havana and is a great place for a morning jog or sunset stroll. The Malecon is where local Cubans of all ages come to hang out, chat, listen to music, or just catch up on the day’s news. You’ll also see fisherman testing their skills from the edge of the seawall. For many Cubans, a night out just isn’t financially accessible. However, anyone can afford to take a beautiful walk with their loved one, and tourists seem to flock there for the same reasons. It’s generally safe to walk on the Malecon, but always be aware of your surroundings and go earlier in the evening when it is busy with people.

Havana Club Rum Museum (Museo del Ron Havana Club)

Given its ideal climate for growing sugar cane, Cuba is perhaps most synonymous with rum - which is made from distilling sugar cane. A visit to Havana just wouldn’t be complete without learning more (and tasting) how this drink is made. The museum offers multiple daily tours, in English and Spanish, and reservations are recommended. During the tour, see the machinery that is used to this day to process the cane into the final product. After the tour, enjoy a drink in the attached bar which often has live music.

Best Havana Restaurants

Havana offers many culinary adventures and the food quality has generally increased as more travelers have visited the city. Cuban food is often thought of as beans and rice, which are indeed served at many meals and can be delicious, but there’s much more to it than that. The cuisine has Spanish, French, African, Chinese, Portuguese, and Arabic influences, along with Caribbean favorites such as fried plantains, similar to but different from bananas.

Tour companies have caught on and many now include at least one meal at some of the best paladares in Havana. If you want to venture out on your own one night, reservations are almost always suggested at the following restaurants:

Cafe del Oriente is perhaps the best ‘fine dining’ establishment in all of Havana. Expect a good imported wine list and everything from steak to fish. A bit pricey but good food.

Habana Mia 7 is a tiny restaurant very close to the Malecon. On the menu: octopus, risotto, and fresh fish. Another spot for a nice dinner out in Havana.

Somos Cuba is a classic Havana paladar run by a couple. It’s a small, casual place with basic but delicious food. Have patience as the service can be slow.

La Guardia is one of the city’s more upscale and popular paladares. Walk up the marble staircase into the grand dining room and be transported back in time. Delicious food from seafood to lasagna.

Le Chansonnier delivers white booths with table clothes and an upscale dining experience. While waiting for your food, take in the beautiful artwork on the wall created by local Cuban artists.

Dona Eutimia is one of the more well-known paladares in Old Havana. Guests can sit inside or out and can expect basic Cuban fare. Not cheap but not fine dining prices either.

Travel to Havana: Practicalities & Logistics

Before you go.

Visas are required for all American citizens traveling to Cuba. Most tour operators usually include this fee in the price of the trip, or have a separate visa fee that is paid once your trip is confirmed. Either way, it’s a good idea to book a Cuba trip with a tour company who will handle the visa logistics for you. UK citizens also must obtain a tourist card before traveling to Cuba. Medical care in Cuba is quite good, with more doctors per capita than many other countries. However, you should always travel with insurance and many tour operators can recommend a plan to cover you while on your trip. Only routine vaccinations are required for Cuba, however, the CDC does recommend both Typhoid and Hepatitis A vaccinations for some travelers.

Given the influx of American and other tourists into Havana in recent years, advance reservations are almost mandatory for hotels, restaurants, and popular city attractions. Hotel and some meals will likely be included in your tour price, but always check direct with the operator. Most tour operators can also help secure individual dinner reservations.

Cuba is generally very safe compared to other Central and South American countries. Police are everywhere, and especially apparent in high tourist locations. However, as when traveling in any foreign country, use common street sense and pay attention to your surroundings. This is especially true in Havana, Trinidad and other large cities.

Crimes of opportunity, such as pick-pocketing, are not unheard of, but a little vigilance goes a long way, and traveling in a group can help deter any potential trouble. Due to the recent increase in tourism, there have also been reports of prostitutes congregating around Old Havana and the Malecon. If you are propositioned, simply say ‘no’ and continue walking.

Is Havana Cuba Worth Visiting?

Havana Cuba is certainly worth visiting, even if you only make it here for a few hours or just one day. There is just no place on Earth like Havana, even in the rest of Cuba!

It’s a fascinating mix of history and modernity (and has the best, kindest people you’ll ever meet), making it a great stop after a few days at a beach resort in Cuba , a weekend in Mexico City , or even an extended stay in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Some travelers to Cuba skip over Havana, particularly if they’re looking for an all-inclusive resort getaway. This is a mistake! Havana is always worth adding to your Cuba itinerary , even if just as a day trip. 

How Many Days Do You Need in Havana?

To see the very best of the city, you’ll need at least 3 days in Havana.

Generally, three or four days in Havana will give you enough time to feel like you’ve seen most of the city without leaving you itching to take a day trip from Havana or venture onward to Trinidad, Viñales, or Varadero.

If you love to slow travel – spend time lingering in cafes or restaurants, properly exploring the neighborhoods, finding hidden gems, attending cultural events, etc. – then up to a week in Havana might be a good fit for you.

Is 3 Days in Havana Enough?

3 days in Havana is enough to see the best of the city. You’ll have time to visit all the most impressive landmarks and destinations in the city, explore Old Havana , and have some incredible travel experiences while here.

You may want to build at least four days into your itinerary if you don’t want to feel too rushed, but 3 days is definitely enough to do this bucket list travel destination justice.

3 Days in Havana

Day one in havana, breakfast at el café.

Start off your time in Havana at one of the city’s incredible cafes. While most everyday Cuban grab coffee from industrious neighbors selling tiny espresso shots from their kitchens, Havana has seen more and more true cafes sprouting over the years.

Out of all the fantastic cafes in Havana , my favorite is El Café . Housed within a beautifully restored colonial building – a beautiful mix of modern and historic – you’ll find delicious options for coffee and breakfast foods of all types. Their sourdough bread is legendary in Havana.

This is a great place to start the day in Havana. Located in the heart of Old Havana , just a block or two away from El Capitolio, this is a great spot to start a self-guided Old Havana walking tour – or fuel up for a guided walking tour!

Clandestina

Start your Old Havana walking tour just around the block from El Café at Clandestina . This fun design store is much more than just another storefront in Havana – Clandestina is setting trends and inspiring designs, and is at the forefront of Cuba’s new culture.

As Cuba’s first independent clothing brand, launched in 2015, Clandestina has broken records, set trends, and overcome the challenges of simply existing as a small business in Cuba.

At their Old Havana storefront, you’ll find clothing, accessories, home goods, art, and much more, all with unique, tongue-in-cheek designs that are so very Cuba. Anything from Clandestina will be a unique Cuban souvenir. 

Looking for the very local, off-the-beaten-path events, activities, and things to do in Havana ? Get talking with the staff at Clandestina. They’ll have the best recommendations for local concerts, parties, and the like.

Explore Old Havana

Spend a good portion of the first day of your Havana itinerary exploring Old Havana . While Old Havana is a relatively small neighborhood – you can walk from one end to another in 25 minutes – you’ll want to take time to explore, wander, and pop into all the shops, galleries, small museums, and awesome restaurants the neighborhood has to offer.

Start near El Café and Clandestina at Parque El Cristo, then head to El Capitolio a few blocks away . You’ll be surprised to see it’s a mirror image of the United States Capitol Building! 

From there, head up towards the Malecón, passing the Parque Central and along the Paseo del Prado. From here you can loop back down through the twisting streets of Old Havana, and start tracing a path to Havana’s four main plazas.

I always recommend travelers visit these four historic plazas in Old Havana ; they’re home to some of the city’s most beautiful architecture, and form a base route from which to tour the rest of the neighborhood:

• Plaza Vieja
• Plaza de Armas
• Plaza de la Catedral
• Plaza de San Francisco de Asís

These plazas are must-visit sites in Old Havana, but there is much more to see, too. Want to get a little deeper into the neighborhood’s history? Ride in A Vintage American Car

If you’re visiting Cuba, you’ll probably want to ride in a vintage American car!

This is an unforgettable way to travel, plus, a great opportunity to see a lot of the city all at once with a local guide. It’s a great addition to a first day in Havana itinerary.

These vintage car tours usually head all along the Malecón sea wall, towards the Plaza de la Revolución, and around the best parts of the city, so it’s quite the highlights tour!

You can find cars willing to take you on tours of the city from a few key places: in front of Parque Central (near Hotel Inglaterra or Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski), or Parque La Maestranza at the entrance to the Havana Harbor. Of course, your hotel or guesthouse host can arrange these tours for you as well.

I recommend booking these vintage car rides ahead of time , online, before you even arrive in Cuba (or from Cuba using a VPN ). It’s less cash you need to carry to Cuba, and you’ll avoid the hassle of bargaining with drivers.

Sunset Drink at the Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski

A great way to end a day in Havana is with a view of the city’s unbeatable sunset. While many bars and restaurants claim to have the best view, the rooftop bar at the Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski takes the cake.

The rooftop bar at this luxurious hotel faces west – perfect for the sunset! – and overlooks the Parque Central, El Capitolio, and the ornate Havana Theater (Gran Teatro de la Habana), which is beautifully lit up as night begins to fall. It’s a stunning, unforgettable view.

Despite the hotel being one of the city’s best, prices for food and drinks aren’t exhorbitant, making this a perfect choice for an app and pre-dinner cocktail. 

Dinner at Jibaro’s

For dinner, head back towards Parque Cristo in Old Havana where you started your day, this time to visit Jibaro’s , one of our favorite restaurants in Havana. Jibaro’s is just a small spot, but their mix of traditional Cuban and creative Cuban fusion dishes pack a punch, as do their delicious mixed drinks.

Make sure to try their seasonal seafood dishes, or their “bowls,” and for the vegetarians, there are excellent options, too.

Day Two in Havana

Visit el vedado.

After spending the first day of your Havana itinerary in Old Havana, it’s time to venture out and see some of Havana’s other lovely neighborhoods . The neighborhood of El Vedado is a favorite, and worth a good visit.

Located just a few minutes from Old Havana by taxi or bus, El Vedado was once home to the city’s elite , so you’ll find plenty of lovely old mansions lining the neighborhood’s streets – it’s a very beautiful area, and quite different from Old Havana.

In many ways, El Vedado is still a very desirable neighborhood, and you’ll find plenty of restaurants and cafes here, as well as beautiful boutique hotels located in restored mansions.

A great place to start a tour of El Vedado is at the corner of Calle 23 and L – this busy intersection is home to the famous Yara theater and the large park where you’ll find the world-famous Coppelia ice cream parlor. You can do a self-guided walking tour of the neighborhood, or join a free walking tour from Civitatis .

While visiting El Vedado, make sure to stop at Cuba Libro – this fantastic spot is a lovely cafe and Havana’s only English bookstore. You’ll enjoy the shady patio and can peruse the shelves as you sip coffee or, a personal favorite here, hibiscus tea – té de jamaica. 

Cuba Libro is also a great spot to inquire about any local events, ask for recommendations from locals, and more. 

Ice Cream at Coppelia

You can’t visit El Vedado without getting ice cream at Coppelia ! This world-famous ice cream parlor was built after the Revolution and had dozens of daily flavors in its heyday. Still just as popular (with lines snaking around the park to prove it), you’ll find just a few flavors on the menu these days.

At the entrance to the park, as a tourist, you’ll likely be ushered over to smaller ice cream stands around the sides of the park, rather than directed to the main Coppelia building at the center of the park.

You’ll avoid waiting in long lines this way, and the ice cream is the same, though sometimes tourists get more flavor options. 

After eating, feel free to wander through the rest of the park and visit the main building. The greeters seating guests might redirect you to the ice cream stands, but you can just say you’re interested in looking around or taking pictures.

What to Pack for Cuba

After visiting El Vedado, head to the other side of Havana’s harbor for a visit to El Morro. This lighthouse and fortress on the tip of the entrance to the harbor is an iconic part of Havana’s skyline, and one of the oldest buildings, built by the Spanish in 1589.

While there isn’t too much to see here other than some impressive interior spaces, cannons, and some simple museum displays, the real treat is the beautiful view of Havana. You’ll have an unmatched view of the entire city and the ocean – it’s truly stunning. 

To reach El Morro you’ll need to cross through the tunnel that passes under the harbor, either by taking a taxi or by bus – catch this bus (the P11 bus) from in front of the Capitolio (across the street), and get off just after crossing through the bridge.

Visit El Cristo de La Habana 

From El Morro, continue down along the edge of the harbor until you reach El Cristo de La Habana. This statue of Christ overlooking the harbor has even more enviable views and is a lovely place to watch the sunset over the city. 

Follow the path down the hillside from the statue towards the water and take La Lanchita de Regla to return to Old Havana. This little ferry across the harbor costs just a few pesos and runs from early in the morning until late at night. It’s a fun and inexpensive way for another great view of the city.

Dinner at La Guarida

Finish off the second day of your Havana itinerary with dinner at one of the city’s most beloved restaurants, La Guarida. This restaurant with a view has welcomed everyone from the Kardashians and Madonna to President Obama on his historic trip to Cuba.

Everything is delicious, and every meal is unforgettable. Despite this being one of Havana’s most charming fine dining restaurants, prices are relatively affordable in comparison to similar meals for many travelers back home.

Make sure to book a table ahead of time, especially during the high travel season, as it fills its books far in advance. 

Travel Essential

Don’t think about traveling to Cuba without a good  VPN (Virtual Private Network) . Using a VPN while connecting to the internet is an easy way to keep your personal information safe from hackers and trackers.  We’ve used  NordVPN  for years and couldn’t recommend it more – it’s a must for safety online, especially in Cuba. 

Day Three in Havana

Start the morning at HAV Coffee & Art – this favorite brunch spot in Havana is one of the city’s coolest cafes, and has great food and coffee. This is a beautiful spot in a lovingly-restored building in Havana, and has rotating art exhibits from local artists. It’s a great way to start the day. 

Visit the Museo de Bellas Artes or Museo de la Revolución

Havana has many incredible museums, far too many to see in just 3 days in Havana, but the Museo de Bellas Artes and Museo de la Revolución are two of the very best. Located across a plaza from each other close to the Malecón in Old Havana, choose at least one to visit to start your third day in Havana.

Museo de Bellas Artes

Havana is actually home to two Museo de Bellas Artes (Museum of Fine Arts) locations – one facing El Capitolio with art from around the world, and another, facing the Museo de la Revolución.

While both are excellent, you’ll want to visit the latter if you only have a short time in Havana – this is the institution that houses Cuban art.

This fantastic museum includes Cuban art from colonial times all the way through modern art. Make sure to visit the sections of post-Revolutionary art – you’ll find plenty of fascinating portraits of famous faces, like Che Guevara and other revolutionaries. 

Museo de la Revolución

My personal favorite museum in Havana, the Museo de la Revolución (Museum of the Revolution) is housed in the former presidential palace. This palatial, luxurious building was converted into a museum following the Cuban Revolution.

You’ll still see the bullet holes on the outside of the building from when the building was taken during the Revolution as former dictator Fulgencio Batista fled the country. 

Within the museum, you’ll see both the historic rooms of the palace and plenty of memorabilia from the Cuban Revolution, of course.

Most exhibits are only in Spanish, so if you’re planning a visit, make sure to download the Google Translate app beforehand to translate as you go. 

Your entry also includes entry to the plaza behind the museum, where you’ll find a replica of the ship Fidel Castro used to arrive in Cuba – El Granma – as well as American military gear captured in the Bay of Pigs invasion and t he jeep Fidel rode into Havana when the Cuban Revolution toppled Batista. 

Travel Insurance

Visit Memorias 

Make a stop at Memorias on the way; this tiny shop stuffed with antique trinkets, old posters, postcards, and so much more is easily one of my favorite shops in Havana.

Visiting Memorias feels like making a stop at a museum of Havana’s history – but where you’re able to take some history home with you.

You’ll find trinkets like antique cigar boxes, beautiful posters and postcards, banners, pins, and more. Make sure to hunt for traces of Havana’s history as a playground for the mafia before the Cuban Revolution, as well as more recent communist symbols like pins with Lenin and Stalin.   

The owners have so many fascinating stories to tell of their finds, and are helpful in tracking down something specific if you’re looking for it!

Take a Salsa Class

If you’re looking for a great activity while in Havana, consider taking a salsa class! Salsa classes in Havana are great fun – even if you’re like me and have two left feet – and an unforgettable way to experience this important part of Cuban culture.

If you’ll end up spending a bit more time in Havana and want to get a little better at salsa (or bachata, rumba, or countless other dance styles!), look into options for a series of classes at the much-loved Salsabor dance school in the Centro Habana neighborhood 

Party the Night Away at La Fábrica de Arte Cubano

A trip to Havana just isn’t complete without a visit to La Fábrica de Arte Cubano – in just a few years it has quickly become a Havana institution and was even rated one of Time Magazine’s 100 Greatest Places on Earth – wow! – in 2019. 

La Fábrica de Arte Cubano is a mixed-used arts space has something to offer to ALL visitors – no matter your interest, language, or age. This former cooking oil factory turned hotspot has spaces for permanent fine arts displays and stages that host a variety of musical acts, dance performances, fashion shows, movie screenings, and more.

Spread around the massive space you’ll also find multiple bars and a small restaurant serving great small plates (Anthony Bourdain approved).

While the doors open at 7:00 PM, performances don’t get started until around 9:30 PM or later. However, on days featuring popular musical acts, you’ll want to arrive early, as the line can stretch around the block by 10:00 PM.

Consider eating dinner at El Cocinero – the lovely restaurant directly next to La Fábrica de Arte Cubano. The rooftop terrace has bars and places to eat, and every dish I’ve tried here has been spectacular.

El Cocinero and La Fábrica de Arte Cubano is a great, convenient combination for an unforgettable night out. 

This is a nightlife hotspot – the rotating performances extend into the early morning – but this is a must-visit even if you want to head home early. As the name La Fábrica de Arte Cubano (Cuban Art Factory) implies, this is where culture is being made in Cuba. Don’t skip it!
