The best way to get around Hong Kong is definitely the MTR (Mass Transit Railway), metro of Hong Kong. It’s clean, efficient and reaches most parts of Hong Kong, from the Southern part of Hong Kong Island to rural district in northern New Territories.
MTR operates from 6 am until midnight, with intervals ranging between 3 to 10 minutes. If you have to travel during rush hours, always opt for the MTR to avoid traffic. It only takes 5 minutes from Admiralty to Tsim Sha Tsui (1 station apart), which could take up to 45 minutes for a taxi ride during congestion!
Ticket and Payment
The optimal way to pay for MTR travel is through an Octopus Card , the most widely used electronic payment system in Hong Kong. You may get an on-loan Octopus Card from a service counter at any station (cost HKD 150 for adult). The remaining balance will be returned when you return the card at the end of your trip, with an administration fee of HKD 11. As most rides cost $6-$25, it is not worth getting the tourist day pass which costs $65. Kids under 3 can travel for free while for those aged between 3-11 and over 65 can enjoy concessionary fares (half price of standard fares) with a dedicated Octopus Card.
Other Facts
A glance at the MTR map reveals a network of colorful lines, ingeniously designed to aid illiterate individuals in identifying their stations. However, don't be fooled by the seeming proximity of some stations. It's best to check the map before deciding to walk from one station to another, as some could be separated by the harbour or mountains!
While the MTR primarily serves as a means of transportation, it's also one of Hong Kong's unique sights, with several stations boasting of remarkable design elements. The Ho Man Tin and Whampoa Stations, for instance, feature local-style drawings and charming depictions of tree sparrows - fat, ball-shaped birds that are a common sight in Hong Kong, and perhaps an endearing characteristic of the city itself!
Similar to other transportation, smoking, eating and drinking are not allowed on trains and within the gates.

Researching my trip for December I have come across this:
https://www.mtr.com.hk/en/customer/tickets/day_pass_tourist.html
Can anyone confirm this is currently available? If it is can I use it on the S1 airport bus ?

Thank you for this reply.
We bought these on first two days of our trip while we finding our way and thought they were excellent value and extremely convenient. H$65 per day (GBP £7) but we are used to London prices so thought this was fine.
Once we had some cash (notes & coins) we then bought single fare tickets which were about H$5-6
up to now, can we use physical credit card to get on/off in airport express and MTR? I searched this forum, this topic was discussed 3-4 yrs ago, I wish this has happened now.

Hong Kong MTR to raise fares by 3% in June
The city's railway operator increases its fares for another year
In an announcement on Tuesday March 26, the MTR Corp revealed that fares will be raised for the second consecutive year, with plans to increase ticket prices by 3.09 percent in June this year.
Taking public affordability into account, the fare increase is determined based on statistical data from the government's Census and Statistics Department. This includes considering the annual changes in the Nominal Wage Index (Transport), the year-on-year change in the Composite Consumer Price Index (CCPI), as well as the latest calculation of the Productivity Factors.
Based on these factors, it was calculated that the MTR fare increase for 2024 will be 3.2 percent. However, the MTR has also implemented a fare-capping mechanism with an 'affordability ceiling' to ensure that the fare will remain within the means of the public. As a result, the formula adjusted the price hike to 3.09 percent, with the remaining 0.11 percent to be recouped in the subsequent two years.
A formal announcement of the new fares and its effective date will be made at a later date, so keep your eyes on our page.

Hong Kong MTR fares will increase by about 3 per cent in June, the city’s railway operator has announced.
The MTR Corporation (MTRC) – Hong Kong’s only train services provider – announced the hike on Tuesday under a rate adjustment mechanism that takes into account the conglomerate’s property development profits.
The government-controlled firm said the increase had considered public affordability as the fare adjustment was capped at 3.09 per cent, the equivalent to the change in median monthly household income in 2023.
According to its fare adjustment mechanism, the price hike could have been up to 5.05 per cent this year, which triggered the mechanism’s “affordability cap” arrangement. The remaining 1.96 per cent increase is expected to be deferred to next year.
“The ‘Affordability Cap’ arrangement has taken its effect this year in striking a balance between public affordability and the Corporation’s needs to maintain, upgrade and renew the railway system,” Managing Director of Hong Kong Transport Services Jeny Yeung said in a press release.
The company added that ongoing fare concessions will continue.
Ben Chan, a lawmaker for the city’s largest pro-Beijing Party the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong (DAB), said he expected other public transport firms to follow the MTRC in raising ticket prices, as he expressed concern that the extra travel expenses would cause a burden for commuters.
He urged the MTRC to consider cancelling the deferred adjustment rate if fare rises were accumulated – or rolled over – for two years, and to promote fare concessions such as a “ride 10 get one free” arrangement.
HK$7.8 billion profit in 2023
Earlier this month, the firm said annual net profit had fallen more than 20 per cent to HK$7.8 billion last year owing to a drop in the value of its property investments. Total revenue, however, rose 19.2 per cent to HK$57 billion.
MTRC chief Jacob Kam said at the time that they “intend to capitalise on the momentum gained in 2023 to help propel MTR and Hong Kong towards a new era of growth,” according to RTHK. “[W]e will keep practising prudent cost management while seeking out smart technologies and innovations that can help make our railway operations and maintenance even more efficient.”
Rex Auyeung is to be reappointed at the chair of the MTRC from July 1 for another 1.5 years.
Fares last rose a year ago , with a hike of 2.3 per cent.
