Intercourse, PA – A Center of Amish Activity

One of the biggest attractions of Intercourse is the Amish people themselves. Intercourse is a center in Lancaster County where many Amish come to shop, bank, and conduct their business. And many of the shops in town sell Amish quilts , furniture , toys, crafts, and other Amish products that have been handmade by their Amish neighbors.

Some of the scenes from the Paramount motion picture “ Witness ”, starring Harrison Ford, were filmed right here in Intercourse!

How Intercourse, PA Got Its Name

Formerly known as “Cross Keys”, this village was founded in 1754. The name was changed to “Intercourse” in 1814. There are several explanations concerning the origin of the name of Intercourse, but none can be fully substantiated:

Another theory is based on the fact that two major roads crossed here: Old King’s Highway, which ran from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh (now called the Old Philadelphia Pike, route 340), and the road from Wilmington, Delaware to Erie, Pennsylvania. The intersection of these roads was thought to be the basis for calling the town “Cross Keys”, or, eventually, “Intercourse”.

A final idea comes from English used in the early 1800’s. The word “intercourse” would have been a reference to the fellowship, social interaction and friendship that was so much a part of the culture in an agricultural village. These roots mark the community of faith to this day, still experienced by those who care to dig a bit more deeply while visiting the area.

Day One of Fun

Western Holmes County

Enjoy locally-made wines in a breathtaking historical setting. At what was once a turn-of-the-century flour mill, Baltic Mill Winery now offers a variety of sweet and dry wines that are meticulously created to please your palette.

At David Warther Carvings and Gifts , see how David Warther is continuing his family's carving legacy with intricately worked pieces featuring antique ivory, ebony wood and abalone pearl.This astounding collection includes miniature reproductions of sailing ships from ancient Egypt to modern times, and the gift shop offers seasonal wares, Warther knives, clothing and home decor.

Enjoy together time and the delicious berries. Moreland Fruit Farm  is a pick-your-own farm and market. Mouth-watering strawberries ripen the first of June, followed by blueberries and black raspberries. Blackberries and grapes become ripe in July and August. Finally, apples and pumpkins are available during the fall harvest months. The Farm even offers horse drawn wagon rides to the pumpkin fields, so come back with the kids!

You will find fun and flavor at Sunny Slope Winery . They create small batch handcrafted wines and also offer made-to-order sandwiches and snacks from their deli. Every Friday and Saturday features live music from 6-9 p m. with no cover charge.

Visit Doughty Glen’s  award-winning winery, located in Guggisberg Swiss Inn. Sample delicious wines while watching the horses graze the hillside. They offer live entertainment most Friday evenings April through October. Perfect quiet location, and you can relax together on their outdoor deck.

The Holmes County Open Air Art Museum  is a fusion of art and nature set in a gorgeous wooded landscape. Spread throughout the grounds of The Inn at Honey Run, the region's only open air art museum showcases original works from regional artists of various backgrounds, mediums and disciplines. Enjoy a stroll together taking in birdsongs and beauty. The Inn at Honey Run also offers luxurious accommodations, and even features in-ground honeycomb rooms.

Tarragon  at The Inn at Honey Run features contemporary American cuisine that showcases the freshest local, seasonal ingredients. At Han's Place  and Swiss Heritage Winery you will experience the magical marriage of wine and cheese. Choose from 17 delicious varieties of their Swiss Heritage wines to sample, and taste the highest quality cheeses. Han's Place Restaurant features their Swiss Heritage Wines, as well as outdoor dining on their patio and decks. Browse specialty laces and take home your favorites from the gift shop.

Breitenbach Wine Cellars offers over 40 varieties of award-winning wines. Stop to sample, and take a guided cellar tour to learn more about this Amish Country wine. Café Breitenbach is open for lunch, and they serve paninis, salads, and wood-fired pizzas.

Ohio Star Theater  hosts live musicals, concerts, and comedy acts year-round. The theater is located just steps from gorgeous accomodations at Carlisle Inn Sugarcreek and the Dutch Valley Complex of gifts and shopping. The theater’s family-friendly shows provide outstanding entertainment.
