Ever since bedside cribs (also known as co-sleeper cots) exploded onto the baby sleep scene, they’ve made feeding and soothing your baby from the comfort of your bed easier than ever, they’ve been at the top of new parents’ shopping wish-lists.

The Venture Hush Bedside Crib is one of the best value products in this quickly expanding market, and it offers a safe, secure and comfy sleep environment, all for under £100. It scooped joint Gold in the Bedside Crib category of the 2020 MFM Awards and judges were wowed by its breathable mattress, portability and great value price tag.

Extra little details like an adjustable height, spring-loaded feet, the ability to incline and a sleeping area that’s so roomy it surpasses a fair few premium models, make it a competitive option as a bedside crib. Its lightweight frame (it weighs just 8.15kg) also mean it’s really easy to move around the house for naps, or to take away with you.

Karen tested the crib with her baby for a couple of months, from when he was 4 months old

How does the Venture Hush Bedside Crib look?

It’s very stylish and it fits into our bedroom well. The plush, attractive look of the crib is one of the recurring comments from online reviewers and was also noted by home testers of the MFM Awards 2020 who said it looked much more aesthetically pleasing than its cheaper price tag would suggest.

Venture hush crib side up

How does it compare to other bedside cribs?

Other products at the cheaper end of the bedside crib spectrum are thin on the ground, with most starting at upwards of £180. That said, there are a couple to give the Venture Hush Bedside Crib a run for its money – the Red Kite Baby Nebula , £125, has similar features (it’s height adjustable and has an incline), and in addition, it transforms into a playpen when your baby is older, but it doesn’t have the premium finish of the Venture Hush Bedside Crib and it has a smaller sleeping area.

The Nania Bedside Co Sleeping Crib, £74.81, and the Babylo Bedside Cozi Sleeper , £119.99, are also direct competitors, but again, offer a more no-frills look with less features for your money.

The Venture Hush Bedside Crib stacks up against more premium models in the category; we used the SnuzPod 3 (£189.99 on Amazon ) when Milo was first born, which looked and felt great, but was small, with a mattress size of 44x80cm. The Venture Hush Bedside Crib is a lot wider and more spacious at 51x85cm, plus is was lighter to move around (it weighs 8.15kg to the SnuzPod 3’s 11kg).

What’s the age range for the Venture Hush Bedside Crib?

It’s suitable for babies from birth to 6 months.

Is it possible to see your baby at all times?

Yes – even when the sides are up, you can see your baby clearly through the mesh panels.

Venture hush bedside crib

Are the drop-down sides easy to use?

They’re ok – you have to take a bar out of the top to take it down. We had it zipped up most of the time, but I imagine for newborn babies it would be down more often, with the co-sleeping set up. It may be tricky if you were hoping to zip it up and down multiple times in a night.

Is it simple to pick up your baby from the Venture Hush Bedside Crib?

Yes, really easy – if you are using it as a co-sleeper, with the sides zipped down, your baby is right next to you. If it’s set up as a crib with the sides up, you can simply unzip the side or reach over – both are really simple.

How lightweight and portable is the crib?

At 8.15kg it’s so lightweight – the Red Kite Baby Nebula and Babylo Bedside Cozi Sleeper, as well as many more premium models, are heavier and less portable. We have taken it to visit family and are planning on taking it on an upcoming holiday, so its weight and portability really do set it apart.

Does the Venture Hush Bedside Crib feel roomy?

Very. You really get a lot of crib for your cash here – the size was perfect for Milo to move around in while he slept and great to play in when awake. He particularly loves scratching the mesh on the side of the crib at all hours!

The mattress size at 51x85cm is noticeably bigger than the SnuzPod 3 (44x80cm) and it’s also roomier than many other, pricier, market leaders, including the Chicco Next2Me Magic (50x80cm; £239) and Tutti Bambini Cozee Air Bedside Crib (80.5x50cm; £185) to name just two.

baby in venture hush bedside crib

Is the mattress comfy?

Yes, Milo slept really soundly in it and the mattress feels not too soft, or too firm. The crib is rated 4.6 out of 5 stars on Amazon and a number of reviewers comment on the high quality, breathability of the mattress and how good their baby sleeps while in the crib.

Can the Venture Hush Bedside Crib be used as a standalone crib as well as for co-sleeping?

Yes – it can be used as both, making it versatile and adding another point for its value for money.

Venture hush crib next to parent bed

Does the Venture Hush Bedside Crib convert easily into a cot?

It does – you simply remove the straps from the bed that make it a co-sleeper, zip up the side panel and you’ve got a cot. It feels safe and the design is well thought out.

Is there a shelf?

One minor negative is the lack of shelf – the SnuzPod we used did have one, which was great for holding muslins, bottles and soothers. But considering the price tag of both cribs, it wasn’t a deal breaker for me.

Can you rock the Venture Hush Bedside Crib?

Sadly no – for me, this is the main downside. Sometimes, my baby was nearly asleep while lying in the crib and to be able to rock it would have been amazing. Instead, we often had to get our little one out for him to fall properly asleep on us before transferring him back into the crib.

What other features does it have?

The Venture Hush Bedside Crib has a number of other great features – an adjustable height frame and a tilt element to help with colicky and refluxy babies. Both functions are big hit with online reviewers, who note how well it fits to all sizes of bed and just how useful the tilt is for settling newborns.

The crib also has extendable spring feet, which we found a little confusing – it would be great if these were lockable. Many online shoppers however report the feet as a big positive as it enabled them to get the crib closer to their bed.

Is the Venture Hush Bedside Crib easy to clean?

Yes – the fabric is good for cleaning and most things wipe off easily. The mattress too is really simple to wash and wipe down.

How easy is it to put together?

My husband assembled the cot in about 15 minutes – the instructions were easy to follow and its lightness really helps when putting it together. This opinion is shared by one of the MFM 2020 Awards home testers who said: ‘I would happily use the Venture Hush Bedside Crib instead of a travel cot as it’s so light and easy to put up.’

What would you have wanted to know before buying the crib?

It would have been useful to know that it didn’t rock, and also about the spring-loaded feed and how they don’t stay static.

Are there any design elements that are particularly useful?

Yes – the wideness of the crib is fantastic as Milo has a lot of room to move around.

Venture hush dimensions

Is the Venture Hush Bedside Crib good value for money?

Yes – for its price point it’s definitely a good option as your baby’s first bed – the fact it can see you from the newborn stage right up to 6 months and arguably longer is great, and its stylish finish was a hit in our house.

Where can I buy it?

It’s available to buy from Venture , Amazon and babaloo.

MadeForMums Verdict:

A stylish bedside cot that defies its cheaper-than-average price tag with its exceptionally roomy sleep space, attractive finish and handful of useful functions. It's great for parents who want a portable cot that can be moved into different rooms thanks to its lightweight design.

And while it the overall finish could do with slight refinement, this crib offers longevity and most importantly, a safe and comfy sleeping environment that stands up against pricier competitors.

Best travel cot 2023: lightweight cots for travel

Attempting travel with a baby? The best travel cot will make sure you’re suitably armed, and they’re suitably snuggly

Two toddlers playing in a blue travel cot – one of the best travel cots you can buy

The best travel cot? Be honest, it’s something you didn’t even know existed until you became a parent and had to take a trip. Do you have to travel with a bed for your baby? Well, yes, you do, they're just as essential as the best car seats and best suitcases , and luckily there are so many incredible new designs that hitting the road with your littlest is that little bit easier.

We give you the travel cot, the portable crib, and the basket bed … here are all the latest and the best products on the market which allow you to travel light even though you’re now packing an extra person.

How to buy the best travel cot

Why you can trust T3 Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

First off, you might be surprised to find out that travel cots aren’t just for travel. If you’re stuck for space at home, regularly splitting time between two places, want a safe place to keep them corralled while you pop off for a second (see above), or like to have a spare for friends’ babies when they pop round for a coffee (the friend, that is, not the baby), a travel cot is a sensible solution.

But when it does come to travel, having your own portable cot means that you needn’t worry about whether that Airbnb has all the necessaries or that hotel webpage is up to date, and it also gives baby a familiar place to sleep, eliminating one more reason for them to get lairy while you’re on the road.

And it’s what you’ll be using it for that’ll mostly dictate the type of travel crib you want.

Compact foldable cots or bassinets are best for chucking in a suitcase or luggage locker on the plane, while trips by car simply call for something that can fit in the boot. The more lightweight they are, the more you might question the fact that they’re deemed suitably sturdy for a human child, but between rigorous manufacturer testing and great reviews across the board, you can rest assured each of our picks will keep them safe as houses, even if you’re a long way away from yours.

You might be wondering if travel cots are safe to sleep in? The answer is yes, as long as you buy the right one and your child doesn't sleep in it all the time. Read our guide linked above for more information on travel cot safety.

Finally, for maximum mileage when it comes to the initial spend, look for a model that comes with an included mattress, adjustable levels for rapidly growing babes, and more.

Graphite/Black Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot

1. Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

The Sleep&Go Travel Cot is a well-designed piece of kit that hopes to make travelling with little ones a breeze. It sets itself apart from rivals by being adaptable: it's a travel cot one minute, playpen the next, and can even transform into a newborn co-sleeper. Perhaps best of all, it's able to transform between these functions in seconds thanks to its innovative all-in-one frame.

It lets itself down slightly with the lack of colour options, and the fact that it's not the smallest when folded.

With an RRP of £150, it sits firmly in the upper-mid-range price category, but it's durable materials, solid build, and innovative features mean it more than earns its place at the top of our list.

A blue mesh travel cot by BabyBjorn

2. BabyBjorn Travel Cot Light

Praise be to Björn Jakobson, granddaddy of all things baby-related — his brainchild BabyBjorn still leads the pack when it comes to travel cots, with this one getting our second spot for its practical, paediatrician-approved design. The foldable travel cot packs down into a neat carry case with padded shoulder straps and a waist belt for easy transportation, and we love how compact it is, not to mention easy to set up, which is a real bonus when there’s unpacking to be done.

The mattress has been designed in conjunction with paediatric specialists to provide the best support possible, but the only problem is that it’s at floor level, so if you have shorter arms, bear in mind it might take some effort, or the help of a taller family member.

Nuna SENA Aire

3. Nuna SENA Aire

The thing about parenthood is that you always have your hands full, and when it comes to travelling with kids, that goes double. So welcome the SENA Aire, a thoughtfully designed travel cot from premium baby gear brand Nuna that can be set-up not only quickly, but with one hand. Its zigzag legs pop-up instantly, and come with padded edges so you cannot trap you finger in a hinge while you’re seeing it up.

However, the SENA Aire’s main USP is what its name suggests; an advanced air design delivers maximum airflow that will give its inhabitant deeper sleeps. That’s the theory. Elsewhere, the SENA Aire gives the travelling parents everything they need, including a mattress, sheets, an insect net and even cotton sheets. Best of all, it’s all machine washable, and goes neatly into a travel bag.

Inovi Cocoon Folding Moses

4. Inovi Cocoon Folding Moses

Here’s one for youngsters taking their first flights. Suitable for the under six months crowd, this simple crib won’t be with you for long, but it’s sure to impress any parent thinking of taking a flight to show-off their new addition. A simple and nice-looking crib that could easily be used at home, the Cocoon is compact and lightweight enough for travel, even complying with international aviation standards (IATA) so it can be taken on a plane as hand luggage, and stowed in overhead locker compartments (minus junior, we hope).

It also includes a mesh canopy that protects baby from the outside world – including insects, pets and curious passers-by – while being itself constructed atom transparent, breathable mesh panels. The Cocoon is also easy to set-up, with four locking joints on its fold-out base for maximum stability.

Phil & Teds Traveller Travel Cot

5. Phil & Teds Traveller Travel Cot

Like the BabyBjorn travel cot, this Phil & Teds option is suitable for use from birth to three years, making it a good option if you’re after a longer-term solution. The big difference between the two is that this little number is more suited to long-haul travel, with a weight of just 3.2 kilograms and an ultra-compact design that’s formulated to fit in a suitcase, luggage locker, or even the storage space of your buggy.

Reviewers found it was a bit awkward to set up, but that it was light, sturdy and comfy enough to make up for it, so we reckon it sounds just fine if you’re setting up camp for a while.

Dark grey SpaceCot Travel Cot

6. SpaceCot Travel Cot

If the combination of quick setup and sturdiness is the holy grail of travel cots, then call us Indiana Jones, because we seem to have found it in the SpaceCot Travel Cot. The makers say it opens and closes in just three seconds — a big boast, but reviewers vouch for its veracity.

They found it super easy to set up, and loved the included detachable crib levels and mattress that let it work as a cot up to six months, and a playpen up to 30 months. If you frequently find yourself with your hands too full for faffing around, all signs point to this easy-up cot being a good buy.

LittleLife Arc 2

7. LittleLife Arc 2

OK, it’s a tent. Get over it. Kids love camping! Seriously though, the tent-style Arc 2 has a lot going for it, especially if you travel a lot because (and this is a stroke of genius) the Arc 2 packs-up into a small lightweight backpack. A pop-up tent weighing a mere 2.5kg, it uses colour-coded, lightweight aluminium poles and comes with a Velcro-attached foam mattress and washable cotton cover.

Although it can be used indoors perfectly well, as its design suggests, the Arc 2 can also be used outdoors, and be secured with tent pegs. It works as a bed, a playpen, and just as a place to keep a child out of the sun. If you’re an outdoorsy kind of a family, the Arc 2 is a no-brainer.

Koo-Di Pop Up Bassinet

8. Pop Up Bassinet Koo-Di

Designed for use in the house or out in the garden, at the beach or for trips somewhere rather sunnier, the Koo-Di Sun and Sleep Travel Bassinet looks to be a versatile option for keeping the smallest member of your group happy, cool, and out of the sun.

The mesh sides are intended for ventilation and peace of mind, allowing you to check on them as they (hopefully) snooze, while the integrated zip-up mosquito net keeps nibbles at bay, and the blackout blind claims to block 93 percent of all harmful rays. That’s all pretty high tech for a travel cot, making it our best bet for travel abroad and hot summer days at home.

Chicco Lullago Zip Crib travel cot

9. Chicco Lullago Zip Crib

This expandable travel crib gives the option for different depths as they grow, giving it more lasting power than some of our smaller picks, and making it, according to happy reviewers, a great transitional cot. Users loved that it was sturdy and easy to put together, but found it a bit heavy to carry — although, while the travel bag is a bit more cumbersome than its BabyBjorn equivalent, some might appreciate that it looks more like your average minimal tote bag rather than a baby-specific behemoth.

Overall, it’s agreed that the quality is top-notch and the setup simple, but if you have to travel a long way, you might be better placed going for something like Phil & Ted’s travel cot.

Joie Excursion Travel Cot with detachable changing mat and rocker

10. Joie Excursion Change & Rock Travel Cot0

Trying to get them off to sleep isn’t the only thing that can prove tricky on the road - there’s also the small matter of changing to attend to. Luckily, some clever clogs at Joie has made a travel cot that doubles up as a changing table. Actually, make that triples up, because it also packs in a soothing rocker with soft toys. And it has wheels!

With a draught-resistant base and mesh lining for a comfortable sleep, a rocker/bassinet for soothing and naps, and a changing table for you-know-what, reviewers agree this is a great portable option for when you want to streamline your stuff. Just be aware that it’s very large and very heavy, so it’s not the best for small cars and certainly won’t fit in a suitcase, but gosh darn is it versatile.

A Buyer’s Guide to the Best Baby Travel Cots

Purchasing a travel cot is a great way to secure your little one no matter where you’re visiting, but there’s a few different things you’ll want to keep an eye on as you shop around for the perfect fit. Your baby needs to be able to sleep and play in a secure and safe environment so make sure your cot meets all of these important requirements to be a good fit!

Flexibility and Versatility

Babies are an exciting but expensive addition to your family, so a flexible and versatile travel cot that will last you through your baby’s initial growth spurt, their changing sleep and play needs, and even a few different babies is a great choice. Look for a cot that converts from bassinet to play pen to larger sleeping pen for the best value!

Stain-Resistant yet Soft

Babies are messy, and accidents happen. A cot that can withstand quite a few accidents from your baby is a great choice. Look for a mattress pad that can be removed or washed and a polyester material that wipes down easily. A cot that can comfortably handle the outdoors, stains, sweat, rain, and more will be a versatile and functional part of your family routine, but you’ll also want to make sure it’s still soft enough that your baby can rest comfortably inside.

Travel cots for babies are a big part of ensuring your baby is comfortable sleeping and at play r while you go about your day whether you’re at home or traveling. Picking a sturdy, soft, secure, and reliable travel cot that lasts your child a long time is key to easing your transition into new parenthood and ensuring a happy and healthy sleep and play balance in your baby’s life.

Venture Hush Bedside Crib review

Venture Hush Bedside Crib

1. Venture Hush Bedside Crib

Venture Hush Bedside Crib

Venture Hush Bedside Crib at a glance

The original Hush bedside best crib by Venture was our first foray into the world of co-sleeping. It's been a fantastic item and is loved by parents all over the Uk as seen with it's raft of reviews and award winning pedigree. However as we always do at Venture we are constantly striving to improve our products when we can, so the Hush had recieved a huge update. The latest version of our Hush bedside crib takes all that made the first great and improves on them tenfold by offering two versions to suit peoples budgets.

We spoke to these real parent testers to get their review...

How did this product make your life easier?

Hannah: I love this product. The Venture hush bedside crib was brilliant as a beside me crib to lay my little one while they slept next to me. The side was able to be dropped to allow co-sleeping and to be able to get the baby out of the cot to feed during the night with ease. The size of the cot is great, it is much bigger than my normal beside me cot which meant that there is more room for them to grow and it will last longer than my previous one.

Maria: I love that I can have a bedside cot like this next to my bed that also allows me ease of co-sleeping. As a breastfeeding mother the fact that I can roll over and get my LO out of the cot without having to get out of bed is so helping for feeding my baby girl and then heading back to sleep myself with a bit more ease. Another feature I found useful was the height adjustment, with the SnuzPod4 which I’ve also tried, this adjustment needs tools to move the next-to-me style cot up or down, however the Venture Hush Bedside Crib can be done with a click of a button on either side.

Ruth: The Hush by Venture is a well-designed product and has some features which really help you out as a Mum. Firstly, the product can be easily moved around the room as comes with wheels. Therefore no lifting required once in location. Each wheel has a brake so can fix in one place. The product is fairly light-weight - not quite as light as a moses basket but more moveable than a full size cot. Secondly, the six height settings make the Hush very convenient to use, whether you are trying to attach to the bed or prefer as a stand alone. The full height of the Hush is great, especially for anyone with backache or sore arms from lifting. It definitely helped with the ‘roll’ of the baby into their bed with minimum disruption. Thirdly, the basket on the bottom is really convenient for storing change gear, spare blankets or sleeping bags, and/or a change of clothes. Finally, if you did have a baby with colic or reflux this product tilts, so can help little ones sleep better and safer.

Would you recommend this to other parents?

Kat: This product was super easy to put together and you could feel it was very high quality and stylish - it fit in with my decor easily. The crib is quite large so if you are concerned about outgrowing a Snuzpod and you have the space, then this will seemingly last much longer. I loved that it was on wheels and the Snuzpod is very heavy and clunky to move, and you wouldn't want to move with baby in it so found this a good feature. Also the visibility is much better on this product than the Snuzpod. The mesh is more see through so if you want to keep an eye on baby, it is much easier with this.

Katherine: Yes. There are many similar products on the market now. This one looks sophisticated and smart and would fit in with any bedroom. The storage tray is an advantage over some of the other similar products I have seen. The adjustable height makes it suitable for a range of beds. The sleeping surface is a good size.

Hannah: I would absolutely recommend this product to a friend or mum. It was great value, came quickly and the instructions were easy to follow. The grey colour was neutral and worked well within our room. It has an adjustable frame which meant that it was easily adapted to any size bed and folded down easily so we can travel with it or move it between rooms. It also came with a travel bag, which was great.

Would you choose this product above all others on the market?

Ruth: The co-sleeper crib is a good-size and would last longer than a Moses basket. The mattress appears to be a superior product to other moses baskets and cribs that I’ve seen. The product materials are really nice and as a product is enjoyable to use. The product is well-considered for Mums with some great design features – including the storage basket, six height settings, four wheels and tilt. Our little one has tested a range of products out; this was the only product where I felt he would go down relatively awake and be content to lie there without stimulation. I think the height settings, size of mattress and the mattress design can be credited with this. I am confident that our baby had a good night sleep in this co-sleeper. We did not test the co-sleeping element. However, the co-sleeper was attached to bed and was extremely easy to put in place. Unlike Chicco Next to Me does not come with travel bag but would pack to similar size.

Maria: The Hush is not too heavy and I can lift by myself to move it from upstairs to downstairs – the wheels then help manoeuvre the crib from one side of the bed/room to the other. This is a great feature when LO is sleeping and I need to bath my toddler, as I can bring the crib to the same room, or just outside. I do love how spacious the cot feels, there seems to be a lot of room for my LO to stretch out.

Hannah: I particularly loved that it had a tilt to it that helped reduce reflux and colic, as I used to have to put a towel under one side to support him and this was a safer and easier fix. There is also a storage compartment underneath the cot which was fab as it was so useful to put those items, like nappies, under the cot for easy access in the middle of the night. The cot is stylish, useful and looked nice and I would be very happy to have it in my bedroom. The grey colour keeps stains to a minimum and won't make yellow milk stains. It also had straps to strap the cot to our bed to ensure that the cot stayed safe.

What changes would you make to this product?

Kat: There are a couple things that I would change : The next to me function I couldn't really use as the flap doesn't lie flat. You would still need to pick your baby up out of the crib rather than slide the baby along. The straps going across the whole bed frame make it difficult to set up on your own. The height bars need 2 people to adjust, my husband caught his finger in it. The metal bar is cold at night when you're lifting your baby in and out of the crib which is quite uncomfortable. Would be better with a tilt function and a rocking function.

Katherine: A storage / transport bag would be useful (although I am aware that I received the product direct from manufacturer so it may well come with one when purchased commercially). As with all products of a similar nature the availability of appropriate sized and priced bedding is important, as is the ability to buy replacement mattresses to allow use with subsequent children.

Maria: I would love to see a tweak to the drop down feature on the side of the Hush. With other next-to-me style cots I’ve used the side comes down easily, without disturbing baby. The Hush is dropped down by the click of a button on either end, lifted off its attachment then brought down – it’s not ideal when I’m trying to be especially stealth mode at 3am and not wake my baby girl up. If I'm being picky, I'd also like to see a design change to the base/wheels as this feels like an office chair style.

10 best travel cots in 2022

Best travel cots for 2021

Are you planning on travelling with your baby? Travelling as a parent comes with its fair share of challenges, especially when it comes to sleeping. Baby travel cots are perfect for parents who want to carry their little one on a plane, bus, or even train. They’re lightweight and can be folded up and stored away easily once travelling is over.

But what are the best travel cots in 2022? We have listed the best travel cots for you to use and what features each has so that you can choose which one is right for you.

Why do we need travel cots?

As a parent, you pretty much have your hands full, so it doesn’t make sense to drag a crib around and a travel bag. Additionally, airport security tends to frown on cribs. Whether it’s a few days away for a weekend break or a week-long holiday, baby travel cots can offer those precious few moments of rest and relaxation before or after an important journey.

Can You Use A Travel Cot As A Permanent Bed?

Some of the links below are affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. This means that, at zero cost to you, I will earn an affiliate commission if you click through the link and finalize a purchase.

For parents who are on the go, a portable sleeping arrangement for the baby is essential. A travel cot is a versatile solution for many families needing a bed that can fold up and goes with them for travel purposes. But some find their travel cot so handy, they come to wonder if it’s okay to use it as a permanent bed for their baby.

You can use a travel cot as a permanent bed at home provided the cot is safe, secure, and in good condition. To ensure it’s safe, always follow safety guidelines, which include having a sturdy, strong frame and base on the cot, as well as a firm mattress.

Once your baby becomes accustomed to their particular bed, it is beneficial to pack it up and take it with you while vacationing, or even just for a day trip. The familiarity of the environment can make for more restful sleep and a happier baby and mom.

Can You Use a Travel Cot as a Permanent Bed?

A travel cot can be used as a permanent bed for your baby to help simplify a nursery. If you travel frequently, using a travel cot as a permanent bed helps maintain familiarity in your baby’s sleep routine.

Contrary to popular belief, getting your home ready to welcome a newborn doesn’t mean you need a lavishly decorated nursery, complete with a full-size crib and matching bedding.

Preparing your nest can be much simpler and scaled-down. For many moms, simplicity and practicality in getting your home ready can help make bringing the baby home more manageable and less stressful.

What Are the Advantages of Using a Travel Cot as a Permanent Bed?

The most enjoyed advantages of using a travel cot as a permanent bed are how versatile and cost effective they are. Travel cots are also very easy to clean and provide a safe and portable sleeping space for your little one.

Portability

One of the most important advantages to using your travel cot as a permanent bed is its mobility and ease of transport. You can solve the dilemma of where to put your baby to sleep when you take a road trip with a travel cot.

Because it is simple to disassemble, fold up and pack into a carry bag, you can transport it wherever you go, making bedtime and naptime a cinch. Travel cots are lightweight, easy to maneuver, and don’t take up too much space, so they are a perfect solution even in a hotel room.

As parents, safety, security, and comfort are top priorities when bringing a baby home and during the first few months and years of your child’s life. Travel cots provide all of these benefits and more since they are also versatile and mobile.

Sleeping on a too-soft surface can be hazardous for babies. Safety experts suggest that you should use a firm mattress without lining the cot with thick quilts and fluffy padding when using a travel cot.

As long as you meet these requirements, setting up your travel cot at home as a permanent bed for your baby is acceptable.

Familiarity

As your baby gets accustomed to their sleeping arrangements, it is advantageous to maintain that familiar sleep space so that you don’t have to encounter restless nights in a new and strange environment.

Using a travel cot at home and taking it on the road will allow your baby the comfort of sleeping in a bed they are accustomed to, no matter where you are.

Cost Effectiveness

You will find that many travel cots are less expensive than traditional cribs. Also, there is the added expense of accessories and bedding with ordinary cribs, which is not present with the travel cot. Overall, a travel cot is easier on the pocketbook and can help you save money.

Versatility

Many moms find travel cots are ideal for playtime as well as naptime. They can double as a safe play space for your baby wherever you happen to be. Furnished with your child’s favorite toys, the cot is a perfect spot to keep them safe and happy during the day as well.

Easy To Clean

Because a travel cot is often constructed from lightweight fabric, mesh, or quality plastic, it can be easily cleaned and sanitized after use. In addition, knowing your baby has their own space to sleep and play when traveling alleviates the concern about germs and hygiene.

What Are the Disadvantages of Using a Travel Cot as a Permanent Bed?

The biggest disadvantage of using a travel cot as a permanent bed is that it can be easily damaged. If a travel cot is mishandled or not properly maintained, it’s unlikely to serve as a long-term solution. Furthermore, mattresses on travel cots may be thin and need multiple replacements over time.

May Be Less Durable

Because travel cots are not as sturdy and long-lasting as traditional cribs, they are likely not to last as long as a crib will. Since many babies utilize a travel cot from 3 months to 5 years of age, you may find yourself needing to replace the cot occasionally if it becomes worn.

May Be Unsafe When Damaged

Another drawback of cots is that they may become a safety hazard once they sustain enough wear and tear from months of use.

A damaged or unstable cot would require replacement to keep the baby safe and secure.

Mattress May Need Replacement

You may find that the mattresses in many travel cots are thin and possibly uncomfortable for your baby. For this reason, you may need to purchase a new mattress to put into the cot. Replacing the mattress is an additional expense that you won’t encounter with other types of beds.

What Alternatives Are There Instead of Using a Travel Cot?

Instead of using a travel cot, there are alternatives to use including standard cribs, mini-cribs, and co-sleepers. You could also use convertible, portable, or multifunctional cribs. Each offers unique benefits to cater to your specific wants or needs.

Standard Cribs

Some new moms have their hearts set on purchasing a standard crib, which usually has four sides with slats. Though they can be attractive when decorated to match a well-furnished nursery, the main disadvantage of investing in this type of crib is that it is not mobile.

It is more challenging to get things done around the house with the standard crib while keeping an eye on your baby because the crib is not portable.

Mini Cribs

These cribs resemble standard cribs but are smaller and somewhat more portable, and they can be disassembled quickly and taken from room to room. They may be easy to put together and take apart and are ideal for smaller homes.

Co-sleepers

For the parent who wants to have their baby close at hand during the night, co-sleepers may be the way to go. They attach to an adult bed and make it easy to sleep next to your baby.

hush lite travel cot

Using a co-sleeper makes feeding and changing them during the night less difficult.

Convertible/Evolutionary Cribs

These are sometimes referred to as a “crib for life.” You can reassemble convertible cribs into several different types of beds to fit the stages of your child’s life. The advantage of a convertible crib is that it is an investment you only make once that remains with your child for a long time.

Rather than purchasing new furniture as your child grows, you may use this type of bed for many years. However, the drawbacks of buying a convertible bed are that it can be rather expensive and difficult to assemble and disassemble.

Portable Baby Cribs

If you want a crib but desire the mobility of a travel cot, portable baby cribs may be for you. These cribs usually have wheels on the feet, making it easy to move from room to room. A safety brake is a must for portable cribs to keep them stable and prevent them from rolling around.

Multifunctional Cribs

These beds have other pieces of furniture built into them, for example, a changing table or chest of drawers. Using a multifunctional crib can help eliminate the need to purchase expensive furnishings for your baby’s room or your room.

If you are considering a bed for your baby that can be mobile, travel cots may be the best option for a bed for your baby because they are portable, inexpensive, and versatile. Most importantly, your baby will have a stable and familiar sleeping environment, whether at home or on the go.

Red Kite Sleep Tight Travel Cot

‘A lightweight, easy-to-handle travel cot at a very good price point. I would recommend it for ease of use. In fact, I already have.’

Easy to assemble

On the small side

Why you can trust GoodtoKnow. Our experienced Consumer Editor & parent reviewers spend hours testing products to help you make the best choice. Find out how we test and review products.

Charlotte Duck

Darryl Baker and her 10-month-old daughter Cole tested out the Red Kite Travel Cot to see if it was worth packing up on holiday.

The Red Kite travel cot comes in a classic design and doesn’t have many of the extras you get with some products. That said, Darryl raved about how easy she found it to assemble. She also liked that it folds up really small into a bag, making it simple to handle and travel with. Her daughter had an average night's sleep in the Red Kite Sleep Tight travel cot.

The Red Kite is very reasonably priced at around £40 and is a good option for anyone on a bit of a budget who is planning a trip away and wants a relatively lightweight travel cot. It's our pick of the best budget buy in our travel cots buying guide.

Red Kite Travel Cot

VIEW AT AMAZON | £37

Weighs: 7.1kg | Age: Birth to 15kg

The Red Kite Sleep Tight has a standard travel cot design with four legs and two central supports. It has mesh sides so babies can look out and has fully padded top rails for comfort and protection.

‘The colour and look are sleek and stylish,’ said our tester, Darryl. ‘It's a nice compact size, so not the biggest travel cot but with plenty of room to move and also for her [Cole] to grow with it.’ That said if you have an older baby, you might prefer a longer cot.

In terms of weight, this travel cot is pretty average, coming in at just over 7kg.

Comfort and features

While it is relatively basic in terms of travel cot design, the Red Kite Sleep Tight scores extremely high when it comes to ease of assembly. ‘Since first becoming a mum, I’ve borrowed and used three travel cots. I'll be honest, I've pretty much had a fight with all three of them,’ admitted Darryl. ‘Because of prior experience, I wasn’t expecting great things from this Red Kite version so to say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement.’

In fact, Darryl found it so easy to put up and take down, that she sent a video of her doing just that to her mum, whose travel cot she’d previously done battle with. ‘This one went up no problem. It was just as easy to fold back down again and pack away in the handy bag it comes in,’ she added.

Value for money

At just under £40, the Red Kite Sleep Tight is a very good value product and we've named it our best budget buy in this guide. ‘I think this is easily within a lot of parents' budgets and is a must for anyone who needs an affordable travel cot,’ says Darryl. She thinks it would suit someone who doesn’t ‘want to faff and fight with a product’. Though it doesn’t come with lots of fancy extras, and it could be a little larger, she says the ease of assembly is key – something she hadn’t found with other travel cots that she’s used in the past. ‘When you think about it, [this] is the most important feature of a travel product.’

This gets our vote as the best budget cot of all those we tested but you might also like to read our Joie Kubbie Sleep Travel Cot  review – it’s the best travel cot overall, according to our parent reviews. And don’t forget to check out the rest of our  baby product reviews .

Moscow can be an expensive city to travel to, although booking hotels in advance can often mean finding good deals and saving money. Tipping in Moscow  is not as widely expected as in other countries of the world. Tip tour guides around 10% of their daily rate, but in taxis, hotels, and restaurants only if the service warrants it.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

hush lite travel cot

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

hush lite travel cot

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

hush lite travel cot

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

hush lite travel cot

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

hush lite travel cot

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

hush lite travel cot

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

hush lite travel cot

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

hush lite travel cot

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

hush lite travel cot

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

hush lite travel cot

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

hush lite travel cot

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

hush lite travel cot

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

hush lite travel cot

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

hush lite travel cot

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

hush lite travel cot

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

hush lite travel cot

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

hush lite travel cot

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

hush lite travel cot

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!
