11-Day Turkey Itinerary

Last Updated on July 22, 2019

Here’s an  11-day  self-guided  TripKit™   tour to the  top sights of Turkey , including  Ephesus ,  Kuşadası ,  Priene ,  Miletus ,  Didyma ,  Aphrodisias ,  Hierapolis ,  Pamukkale ,  Konya ,  Cappadocia  and  Istanbul .

Day 1 – Arrival & Fly to Ephesus

Arrive in   Istanbul , and transfer to a flight to  İzmir ‘s  Adnan Menderes Airport  (ADM). Rent a car at the airport and drive to  Selçuk , the town next to Ephesus (62 km/39 miles, 1 hour— here’s how ), or to  Şirince , or  Kuşadası .

If  jet lag  is a challenge, have an early dinner when you arrive at your hotel, then a good long sleep, to prepare you for a full next day.

Day 2 – Ephesus

In the morning, explore the  Artemision  and the  ruins of Ephesus  (2 to 3 hours). In the afternoon, the  Saint John basilica ,  İsabey Mosque , and the  Ephesus Museum .

Day 3 – Priene, Miletus, Didyma

Take a  full-day excursion  to these three fine Hellenic and Hellenistic cities.  More…

Day 4 – Aphrodisias & Pamukkale

Drive to  Aphrodisias  (143 km/89 miles, 2 hours), tour the ruins (1-1/2 to 2 hours), then drive to the ancient mineral-water spa of  Pamukkale  (123 km/76 miles, 1-1/2 hours), arriving in time for lunch. In the afternoon, tour the ruins of Roman  Hierapolis , then relax and swim in the hot calcium-laden minearl waters of the  Sacred Pool . Dinner and overnight at your  hotel  in nearby Karahayıt.

Day 5 – Eğirdir, Beyşehir & Konya

Leave Pamukkale after breakfast and drive through Turkey’s  lake country  to  Eğirdir  (140 miles, 3.5 hours) for a tea break and a look at the  medieval caravansaray , then continue to  Beyşehir  (88 miles, 2.25 hours) for lunch and a visit to the historic  Eşrefoğlu Mosque . Continue to  Konya  (48 miles, 1.25 hours), arriving in late afternoon for a visit to the  whirling dervish Mevlana Museum .

Day 6 – Konya, Silk Road, Ihlara, Ürgüp

After breakfast, check out of your hotel and visit the  Seljuk Turkish monuments  (1200s) on and around Konya’s  Alaettin Hill  during the morning (2 to 3 hours), then drive east along the ancient  Silk Road  to  Sultanhanı (110 km, 68 miles) for a visit to the grandest of  Seljuk Turkish caravanserais  (built in 1229).

Continue through  Aksaray  (42 km, 26 miles, 40 minutes), then turn right (south) 11 km east of Aksaray for Selime, Belisırma and Ihlara (23 km). Visit the  Ihlara (Peristrema) Valley , then head east via  Güzelyurt  to  Derinkuyu  or  Kaymaklı  to see its  underground city . From the underground cities, drive north to  Nevşehir , then east to  Ürgüp ,  Göreme  or  Uçhisar  and your  hotel .

Day 7 – Göreme, Zelve, Avanos, Uçhisar

If you wish, get up and out before dawn to fly in a  hot-air balloon  over  Cappadocia  (optional). After you land, have breakfast, then explore more of Cappadocia.

Visit the  Göreme Open Air Museum  in the morning, then drive to  Uçhisar ,  the highest point in Cappadocia, and ascend the natural volcanic rock “castle” for the  panoramic view . Then head for the  Zelve Valley  for more cave-church explorations before heading to the riverside town of   Avanos  to see how local pottery is made.

Day 8 – Istanbul

Fly to Istanbul in the morning, settle in at your  Istanbul hotel  and explore the city as you wish. The  Byzantine Hippodrome  is nearby! If you wish, visit the  Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art  (9-5, closed Monday; stay to 2 hrs), right on the Hippodrome across from the Blue Mosque, or try a  Turkish bath  (1 to 3 hrs), amazingly refreshing after a long day.

Day 9 –  Byzantine  &  Ottoman  Istanbul

Start the day at  Topkapı Palace , touring the palace, the  Harem  and the famous  Treasury . Walk next door to  Ayasofya  (Hagia Sophia) for a visit, then across the street to the  Yerebatan Basilica Cistern , and on to the Byzantine  Hippodrome .

Also visit the  Sultanahmet (Blue) Mosque , according to  prayer times .

Day 10 –  The Bosphorus

Arrive at the  Eminönü ferry docks  by 10 am to get a seat on the  Nostalgic Bosphorus Tour ferryboat . Leave the boat at  Sarıyer , have  lunch , then go by taxi or bus south along the  European shore  of the  Bosphorus  stopping at Büyükdere to see the  Sadberk Hanım Museum , and at Bebek to see the fortress of  Rumelihisarı . Have  afternoon  tea  in the shore village of  Ortaköy , with its Ottoman-baroque waterside  mosque  and  old  Ottoman houses .

Day 11 – Free Day in Istanbul

Lots of possibilities for your last day. It’s not a bad idea to leave most of your  shopping  until the last day so you won’t have to lug your purchases around with you. Spend most of the day in the  Grand Bazaar  and the  Egyptian (Spice) Bazaar , or in the boutiques and antique shops in  Çukurcuma , off  İstiklal Caddesi  in  Beyoğlu .

From  Taksim Square , the hub of modern Istanbul, you can go downhill to  Dolmabahçe Palace , north to the  Military Museum , or you can wander southwest along İstiklal Caddesi , the former  Grande Rue de Péra , the main boulevard of 19th-century Istanbul: grand old embassy buildings, the  Pera Palace Hotel , lots of boutiques, and even a  whirling dervish hall . Plenty of  restaurants  for lunch. Walk downhill from  Tünel Square  at the southwestern end of İstiklal Caddesi to…

—Galata Tower  (9-7; stay 1/2 to 1 hr) Best views of the city from this Genoese cone-topped stone tower. Continue downhill to  Galata (Karaköy) Square  and…

—Galata Bridge  (stay 1/2 hr) Cross the bridge over the  Golden Horn  which links Old and New Istanbul, taking in the view. At the southern end in  Eminönü , take the  Bağcılar tram  back to  Sultanahmet .

Farther afield, you can visit the brilliant  Byzantine mosaics  in the  Kariye Museum  out by the gigantic  city walls .

In the evening, take a taxi to  Beyoğlu  for dinner and perhaps an evening in one of the small cafés or music clubs.

TAILOR-MADE TOURS

For us there is only a small difference between "individually traveling" and "tailor-made travel": namely for individual travel we have already prepared the travel for you. With a tailor-made trip, you determine where to go and how long it takes. You put together your trip yourself, we organize and realize it for you.

Tell us your idea, duration, area, level of difficulty, number of people and we will work out the trip for you. Make an inquiry using the form below or send an email to [email protected] .

CARIA PAN TRAVEL

OUR COMPANY

Caria Pan Travel was founded in 2012, but this says nothing about our experience. The experience of our core team, led by Yüksel Yilmaz, dates back to 1998. Since 1998 we have been considered the co-developer of nature tourism in Turkey. Thanks to our experience and our team, we are now one of the leading travel companies in Turkey in the field of nature tourism. Numerous tour operators, such as Viking Travel in Germany or The Natural Adventure in the UK, have preferred working with us since 1998.

For us, the quality of a nature trip is composed of the following properties: a.) Good organization, b.) Selection of the most beautiful routes and c.) Comfortable accommodation with good food.

That is why we pay attention to the following when planning a hiking tour:

The selection of the most beautiful hiking routes

Selection of safe hiking trails

Family-run accommodations and regular checks on these accommodations

Maintenance of the hiking trails (markings, possibly free cutting)

Detailed measurement and description of the routes

The creation and maintenance of a good road book by hiking scouts with many years of experience

Communication before and after booking

Accessibility through the emergency number (if you get lost, there are two emergency numbers available that can help you)

Our tours are not "Copy-Paste - Tours". All of the travel programs we offer are developed by our company.

SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability is a very important topic for us, because we work according to the motto "Earn and let others earn". Sustainability starts with the choice of our accommodations and the cooperation with these people. When making the selection, we take care first of all not to prefer large commercial or chain hotels. In the first place, family-run accommodations come into question, which also makes working with these people more pleasant and easier.

We try to train our accommodation managers according to the requirements of our guests. Try to encourage their children to take over their parents' job in order to avoid rural exodus.

A certain part of our company's income is converted into social projects.

Our staff are paid not according to the standard of our country, but according to the standard of the country from which our guests come.

LUXURY TOUR TURKEY TESTIMONIALS

KATHERINE MOTLAGH 28 SEP 2023 – Dallas

We booked a luxury tour of Turkey with Romos Travel. The service and responsiveness from this travel agency were outstanding. The vacation was well organized and exceeded our expectations. The team went out of their way to accommodate our requests and attended to every detail. The hotel accommodations were great, specifically the Gamirasu Cave hotel, followed by fantastic activities such as balloon ride, and Turkish bath in addition to many site visits along the way. Our visits were paired with authentic food and restaurants recommendations and reservations as needed.

We travelled to many countries and Özçan is easily one of the best guides. He is patient, resourceful, punctual, interested in his clients and invested in their enjoyment. Özçan shared an ocean of interesting information about sites we visited and was flexible to organize our days at our request.

The gift of personalized memory plate was a very nice final touch. It was a great trip thanks to Romos travel.

In these unprecedented times, Hakan has been a perfect example of what good customer service should be. He is a wonderful representative of Romos Travel. I have had many issues while generating my turkey trip. Hakan was always available via phone and email to answer my every question and help me at every turn. Kudos to Hakan!

I’m writing from the United States and would like to express my deepest appreciation for the wonderful Ender at Romos Travel that kept my spirits up when I was desperate to find a way out of the United States during COVID-19. He is an outstanding professional and bright light. Thank you to Ender; he helps me in each procedure, and I postpone my trip to 2021.

Luis Quintero

My wife and I recently enjoyed a private tour of Turkey, Istanbul, and Bodrum with packagetourturkey.com. Their turkey specialist, Mr.Hakan, did an excellent job of working with us on the planning. His advice was spot-on. The hotels he recommended worked perfectly for us. Competent and professional agents met us at each stop. All our tour guides and drivers were wonderful. We traveled in a private minivan-Mercedes Vito and flights via Turkish airlines. We would definitely use Romos again and recommend Mr. Hakan to anyone who wants to plan an extraordinary visit to Turkey.

Dr.Carol Reed

We have traveled extensively over our 21 years of marriage with particular attention to upscale travel. A couple of years ago, we found Romos Travel and had them create a trip through Greece and Turkey for us. They handled our trip so professionally that we reached out to them again to arrange a tour of Egypt and Jordan travel. May 2021 they have postponed due to covid for us. We would only use Romos Travel company in the future. They’re honorable, exceedingly gracious, and perfect for creating a memorable vacation experience. Thank you to all at Romos Travel.

You can take your time, go at your own pace, and customize your experience to your liking.

Some of the benefits of a self-guided walking tour include:

  • Flexibility : You have complete control over your itinerary and schedule. You can start and end your tour whenever you want, and you can adjust your plans based on your mood or the weather.
  • Cost-effective : Self-guided tours are generally more affordable than guided tours. You won’t have to pay for a guide, and you can save money by using public transportation or walking to get around.
  • Personalization : You can tailor your tour to your interests and preferences. You can focus on the sights and experiences that matter most to you and skip the ones that don’t.

However, a self-guided tour does come with some downsides. Without a guide, you may miss out on important historical or cultural information, and you might not know the best routes or hidden gems. You also won’t have someone to answer your questions or provide recommendations.

Guided Turkey Tour Package

A guided Turkey tour package is an all-inclusive travel experience that includes a tour guide, transportation, accommodation, and often meals and activities. This type of tour can be a great option if you’re short on time, want a stress-free vacation, or want to see the highlights of Istanbul and other cities in Turkey.

Some of the benefits of a guided Turkey tour package include:

  • Expert guidance : You’ll have a knowledgeable and experienced tour guide who can provide you with historical and cultural context and answer any questions you may have.
  • Hassle-free : You won’t have to worry about transportation, lodging, or planning your itinerary. Everything is taken care of for you, so you can sit back and enjoy your trip.
  • Socialization : You’ll be traveling with a group of like-minded individuals, which can be a great way to make new friends and share experiences.

However, guided tours also have some drawbacks. They can be more expensive than self-guided tours, and you won’t have as much control over your schedule or itinerary. You’ll also have to follow a set program, which may not suit everyone’s tastes.

The Lycian Way

Self guided tours, trekking on the lycian way, the oldest and foremost of  turkey's culture routes.  a coastal trek along the stunning and untouched coastline, following ancient routes between settlements from tiny defensive hamlets to roman metropoli.  walk past greek ghost towns, mysterious lycian sarcophagii, sheer sea cliffs, locally endemic orchids, 18 km long untouched stretches of golden sand where the loggerhead turtles nest, the world's first federal parliament chamber, lively cosmopolitan resorts like kas, sunken cities, eternal flames, the home of father christmas...  the lycian way has it all.  and with amber travel, your bags will be carried to the hotel at the end of the trek.

With GPS points, detailed graphical trekking notes, transfers to and from treks, and all bag transfers are included in our packages.  You just carry water and your picnic, our notes make navigation straightforward when you arrive at the accommodation your bags are waiting for you!

Our Self Guided trekking tours take in the highlights of the East and West Lycian Way.

The Lycian Way offers a unique and candid insight into the lands that you pass through. Being in smaller parties, the closeness to nature is palpable. Following generally well marked footpaths with our well tested trip notes, you have the comfort of knowing that there is someone you can call, and that at the end of the trek your bags will be waiting for you in the friendly hotel chosen to be trekker-friendly.

We organise 2 standard week-long tours on the Lycian Way,  one shows the coastal and archeological highlights of the Western section between Kayakoy and Patara,  the Eastern trip  has longer walks interspersed with rest days for those who love the beaches .

The  Western walks  are shorter, but steeper, reflecting the rugged terrain that gives the area it's beauty.

The  Eastern walks  are generally longer but with less ascent, closer to the sea, allowing more swimming.

Both treks can be arranged with basic or more comfortable accommodation to suit your budget.

Have a look at the  map of the Lycian Way and details and fotos of each section  by clicking here.

He was, however, a serious theologian and was at the council of Nicea in 325AD, when the tenets of the Christian church were agreed upon.  You will have time to visit his church and also the site of Myra, with its impressive theater and rock tombs, before transferring to the start of your last walk.  You will walk from Kapakli village to the sound of Kekova, passing the castle of Simena, surely one of the most picturesque anywhere. The overall experience is good. I like the logistics and the coverage of the different attractions and activities. The tour guide provided a good service and everything went smoothly. G Adventure gave us a variety of experiences and we loved their choices of locations and experiences other travel companies don't provide (ig. homestay). There are two issues though: The hotel we stayed in Antalya was the worst. The location is convenient, but we couldn't sleep at all all night due to the noise outside (until 5am!). Our tour guide told us the tourists gave the G Adventure the same feedback over and over again, but nothing has changed. This might be my #1 negative thing to say about the G Adventure. The second issue was some of the restaurants the tour guide took us were a little sketchy and dishonest. But I will still recommend G Adventure to other people.

Very nice, time-efficient, safe, secure, good food. Favorite hotel, Iris in Canakkale, then Cave in Capadocia. It would be my favorite, but the electricity outlets were very deficient. I wish more information about hamams would have been given, perhaps make it an optional visit. I really regret having missed the experience.

We went on the Magic Carpet Tour. Fez Travel were absolutely outstanding from the point of booking to the final transfer. We had a flight cancellation but they resolved the airport pickup immediately. You could get them on the phone. The tour itself is highly recommended. Our tour guide Ege was one of the best ever and we saw and did so much. The hotels picked were all great and the rest stops (there is a lot of travelling) were well selected. I cannot praise this company highly enough!

Absolutely Turkey

An excellent way to see the highlights of Turkey for those short on time. You'll see many cultural and historical sites as well as get all those Instagram shots (if that's your thing). Enquire about upgrading to the cave hotel in Cappadocia - it's an absolutely must-have experience. Breakfast and dinners are included however I would recommend getting out of the hotel in Capadoccia making your way into Urgup and the waterfront in Izmir where there are an abundance of small eateries (Sofra was amazing) to try authentic local cuisine. Our guide Nadir made this trip - there wasn't a single question he couldn't answer (and we tried!). He genuinely cares about his guests and goes out of his way to make the trip perfect - when our hot air balloon ride was cancelled on the first day, he woke up early to accompany us on the second day and would probably have blown the balloon up himself to get us the experience we were there for. Our driver Dursun was lovely and took so much pride in providing a safe and clean journey. The days are long because there is so much ground to cover, but I would highly recommend the trip to anyone looking for a fuss-free way to see the highlights of this beautiful country. Pack a few extra lira for taxis to get out and about during free time if you want to see a bit more of the overnight towns.

Premium Turkey in Depth Tour

This trip has totally exceeded my expectations. This has been mainly due to Ugur our tour leader who was also our guide. His leadership and knowledge has been extraordinary and we had an absolute ball. We learned so much about Turkey, its history, its people and culture including its delicious cuisine. The ancient places we visited and and the history of them was passed on to us by Ugur in an easy to understand way that encouraged us to find out more and ask questions. The accommodation was mainly in the old town, close to the sights and of exceptional quality. Another highlight was our day boat trip to the Kekova Sunken City that provided us with the opportunity to relax and have a swim in the turquoise water. All in all a great trip that gives you an exceptional advertiser for going and see more of Turkey.

What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Turkey

Very good trip. The leader Engin was excellent and was at our Bec and call 24/7. I feel for his sanity he needs some nights off and just tell us about a few restaurants but not take us there - do his own thing. The whole group doesn’t need to always be together. We had one person that struggled to keep up with group and I felt some pressure to wait for her or help her- I don’t think she had much insight into the affect she was having on group. Otherwise was a great and diverse group.
Great bunch of people, tour guide was personally involved as part of the group, incredible sights and activities. 10/10 Would recommend.
This is a short break but has completely covered western part of Türkiye. We were traveling during the 9 days public holiday of Ramadan. Our tour guide, Tamur had to adjust our itineraries on the fly so we could cover the places as it had been listed. Murat, our driver, found the short cut and managed the route well. We made it. Hotels are good location. Cave hotel is magnificent, good for photo and selfie. Overall, I recommend this tour.

Ephesus Self-Guided Tour from Selcuk

turkey self guided tours

My trip to Ephesus,Turkey is what I consider a trip of a lifetime. It was my first long-haul flight, which took over 30 hours from the Philippines. It took many leaps of faith just to get there and when I finally reached my dream destination, I cried. I felt a different level of gratitude unlike any I have experienced before.

This post is part of my 11-day Adventure in Turkey. Please check out this Turkey Travel Guide if you are planning your own trip.

Where to stay in Selcuk

How to get to selcuk, how to to get to ephesus archaeological site from selcuk, the ancient city of ephesus, where to start – south or north gate, what to see in ephesus, other places to visit in and around ephesus, where to eat in selcuk, where to avail ephesus guided tour, stay connected in turkey.

My friend and I arrived in Selcuk Town at around 7:00 in the evening. It was already dark and most of the shops in town were already closed. We got lost on our way to our chosen accommodation, Ephesus Palace, but we met a friendly hostel owner who contacted the guesthouse for us. We were then picked up by one of the staff and we finally checked into Ephesus Palace, a budget-friendly accommodation located about 5 minutes from Selcuk town.

turkey self guided tours

Although my friend and I did not stay long in Ephesus Palace, I will recommend this guesthouse to anyone. The owners Mehmet and Handan were very kind and accommodating. The complimentary Turkish breakfast was great and became my standard when it comes to home cooked Turkish breakfast.  I particularly enjoyed the complimentary tea and the awesome view from the balcony.

From Istanbul

There are various ways to get to Selcuk depending on where you are coming from. You can fly out via Turkish Airlines, Onur Air and Pegasus Airlines from Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen International Airport or the brand-spanking new Istanbul Airport to Izmir Adnan Menderes International Airport , the closest airport to Selcuk. From Izmir Airport, you can take a local train located just across the airport to get to Selçuk town. Check out this timetable for more information.

From Cappadocia

Take a Pegasus Ailines or Sun Express flight from Kayseri Erkilet Airport to Izmir Adnan Menderes International Airport . There are also direct buses from Nevşehir (Cappadocia) to Izmir. From there, take a local train to get to Selcuk town. It’s going to be a long bus ride so I would suggest to travel by air instead. Air tickets are cheap in Turkey, so take advantage of this.

From Pamukkale

Catch a minibus to get to Denizli Otogar (bus) station . From there, walk towards the gar (train) station and take a local train to Selcuk. It will take about 3 hours to get to Selcuk town.

turkey self guided tours

Ephesus is about 3 kilometers from Selcuk town. To get there, take a cab from your chosen accommodation to the south or north gate. Travel time is about 10 minutes and one-way fare is 10 Lira or about 90 pesos. You may also take a minibus from town to get to the north gate, which only costs 3.50 Lira or 30 pesos.

turkey self guided tours

The Ancient City of Ephesus, once occupied by the Greeks, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman, was once a vibrant mega-metropolis located in the western coast of Turkey.  The city played a key role in the spread of Christianity throughout the Roman Empire when it became the capital of Asia Minor. Even after many centuries since its downfall, some of its former splendour still remains. A guided tour or a self-guided tour give us glimpses into the lives of the people who once lived there. It’s almost like a time travel when you walk down the ancient streets.

turkey self guided tours

The North Gate (Lower Gate) is closer to Selcuk town so it is recommended to start here if you are taking a minibus or planning to walk from town. It is also closer to the main sights like the Great Theatre , Lower Agora and the Library of Celsus . However, starting at the North Gate can be a challenge, especially during summer, because it is mostly uphill. So make sure to pack some water, sunglasses, sunscreen, and sturdy shoes.

turkey self guided tours

The South Gate (Upper Gate), on the other hand, starts at the Magnesia Gate where you will see the Upper Agora, Baths of Varius , Odeon or Bouleuterion (Parliament), and the Prytaneum (Town Hall). For me, this is the best place to start your self-guided tour because you will be walking downhill and your tour will end with Ephesus’ most famous attractions – the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre . Saving the best for last without being exhausted with uphill walks.

turkey self guided tours

Ephesus boasts a lot of significant historical monuments but here are the ones that I found to be the most awe-inspiring and enchanting. I posted the photos in order from the South Gate (Upper Gate) down to the North Gate (Lower Gate). I hope you find these photos helpful when you do your own self-guided tour, or else grab a map or hire a tour guide.

turkey self guided tours

The Odeon (Bouleuterion)

The Odeon, also known as the Small Theatre, served as an entertainment and meeting center of the city. It also served as a political centre for the city council for religious and governmental discussions. Its small covered theatre sat roughly 1,500 spectators and is one of the original permanent stone theatres to stand in Ephesus.

turkey self guided tours

The Prytaneum

At the west end of the Odeon (Bouleuterion), we found the remains of the Prytaneum built in 1st century BC. This used to be one of the most important ancient government buildings at the center of the city of Ephesus. At the centre of the building was the Temple of Hestia  which contained a sacred hearth that was never allowed to go out to represent all the hearths in Ephesus. Today, only two Doric columns remain from the six original.

turkey self guided tours

The Temple of Domitian

Built in the 1st century AD, the Temple of Domitian was said to have been dedicated to the Roman Emperor Domitian. He was said to be one of the most brutal Roman emperors but because the Ephesians wanted to secure good relations to Rome, they dedicated many buildings in the city to emperors. The Temple of Domitian was the first ever monument built for a Roman emperor.

Goddess Nike

A short walk from the Temple of Domitian, we found this beautiful flying Nike statue. Nike was the goddess of victory in Ancient Greece. This statue symbolized ultimate success and triumph. I later found out that the image of Nike is found on Olympic Medals as a good reminder to never give up.

turkey self guided tours

Fountain of Trajan

Built at the beginning of the 2nd century AD, the Fountain of Trajan was constructed to honor Emperor Trajan. Located at the he north end of Curetes Street, the fountain had two ornamental pools at the front and rear and statues which are now on display in the Ephesus Museum . It’s hard to imagine what it used to be like back in the ancient times but the signage on site will help you understand what the fountain probably looked like.

turkey self guided tours

Curetes Street

Curetes Street is one of the three main streets of Ephesus and is home to many historical monuments. This ancient street runs between Hercules Gate and the Library of Celsus, which used to be a sacred route that lead to the Temple of Artemis. I immediately noticed that this street was very significant since the ancient times because there were a lot of beautiful monuments on the slope.

turkey self guided tours

The Temple of Hadrian

Located along the famous Curetes Street, the Temple of Hadrian is regarded as one of the most famous monuments in Ephesus. There were magnificent statues and friezes inside the temple including a relief of Medusa. but they have all been replaced with replicas of the originals. You will find the original statues in the Ephesus Museum.

turkey self guided tours

The Library of Celsus

As you come to the end of Curetes Street, the most photographed and the grandest monument of Ephesus slowly comes into view. This is the famous Library of Celsus dating from the early 2nd century AD. It is impossible to describe the feeling standing at the foot of the library while looking up at some of the ancient statues and carvings that have survived after many centuries. This monument was the reason why I wanted to visit Ephesus in the first place.

turkey self guided tours

The Great Theatre of Ephesus

The Great Theatre of Ephesus, which was capable of holding up to 25,000 spectators, was one of the best preserved Greek-Roman ancient theaters in the world. It was used initially for entertainment like musical and drama, but was also used for gladiator fights during later Roman times. This massive theatre was nothing like I have ever seen before. Okay, I have not seen any ancient theaters before my trip to Turkey, but seriously, this theatre was really amazing.

turkey self guided tours

Meryem Ana Evi (House of the Virgin Mary)

One of the most popular destinations near the ruins is Meryem Ana Evi (House of the Virgin Mary).  It is believed that the Virgin Mary was taken here by St. John the Apostle shortly after the Crucifixion and to survive the Roman persecutions. It was reduced to rubble by many earthquakes and it was only until 1951 when it was discovered again by a German nun when she the place in her visions.

The Temple of Artemis

The Temple of Artemis was a Greek temple dedicated to the Greek goddess Artemis and was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. During the downfall of the Cult of Artemis with the rise of Christianity, the temple was neglected and looted. Unfortunately, a single column and a small pile of rubble were all that remain of the Temple of Artemis.

The Basilica of St. John

The Basilica of St. John was a monumental basilica in Ephesus ordered to be constructed by Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century. It stands over the burial site of St. John the Apostle. It used to be one of the most celebrated pilgrimage centres on the way to Jerusalem during the medieval times but in was destroyed due to Arabic invasions in 14th century.  Today, visitors can see some of its magnificent structures like the outer courtyard, chapel, atrium, treasure hall, and a simple stone memorial with the statement “The Tomb of Saint John.”

Since we weren’t planning to stay in Selcuk for over two days, my friend and I did not bother researching the best places to eat. Good thing, we found Mehmet and Ali Baba Kebab House , while we were on our way back from Ephesus. This Turkish and Middle Eastern restaurant located near Ephesus Museum is one of the top-rated restaurants in Selcuk.

Mixed Kebab platter and Adana Kebab was our choice for lunch, which we absolutely loved. We also loved their complimentary bread and meze (appetizers).

what-is-a-self-guided-tour

Introduction

Exploring new destinations and immersing ourselves in different cultures is an enriching experience that many of us crave. Whether we’re planning a vacation or simply looking for a unique way to spend our free time, travel often finds its way to the top of our to-do lists. And while guided tours have long been a popular option, there’s a growing trend that offers a more independent and personalized approach – self-guided tours.

Unlike traditional guided tours where you follow a guide and a predetermined itinerary, self-guided tours provide the freedom and flexibility to explore at your own pace. They offer the perfect blend of structure and autonomy, allowing you to create your own adventure while still benefiting from expert guidance and local insights.

In this article, we’ll delve into the concept of self-guided tours, explore their advantages, discuss how they work, offer tips for planning a successful self-guided tour, and highlight some popular destinations where you can embark on this exciting style of travel.

So, if you’re ready to break free from the confines of a traditional guided tour and embark on a journey of self-discovery, join us as we unravel the world of self-guided tours.

Definition of a Self-Guided Tour

A self-guided tour is a form of travel where individuals or small groups explore a destination without the presence of a tour guide. In a self-guided tour, you are in control of your own itinerary, activities, and pace, allowing for a truly personalized and immersive travel experience.

Unlike guided tours, which typically involve a tour operator or guide leading a group of travelers, self-guided tours provide you with the freedom to design your own adventure. You have the flexibility to choose the attractions you want to visit, the activities you want to engage in, and the amount of time you want to spend at each location.

Self-guided tours can be tailored to almost any type of traveler. Whether you’re a solo adventurer, a couple seeking a romantic getaway, a family with children, or a group of friends, self-guided tours offer the flexibility to cater to your specific interests and preferences.

Moreover, self-guided tours are not limited to a particular mode of transportation. They can be done on foot, by bike, or even by car, depending on the destination and the level of exploration desired.

One of the key elements of a self-guided tour is the inclusion of detailed travel materials. These materials, such as maps, guidebooks, and digital resources, provide the necessary information to navigate the destination independently. They often include suggested routes, historical and cultural insights, and practical tips to enhance the overall experience.

While self-guided tours offer flexibility and personalization, they also require a certain level of self-reliance and preparation. Having the ability to navigate and make decisions independently is essential, as is conducting thorough research and planning in advance.

Now that we have a clear understanding of what constitutes a self-guided tour, let’s explore the advantages it offers over traditional guided tours.

Advantages of Self-Guided Tours

Self-guided tours offer a plethora of advantages that make them an appealing choice for travelers seeking a more independent and customized experience. Here are some of the key benefits:

  • Flexibility and Freedom: One of the major advantages of self-guided tours is the freedom to set your own schedule. You are not bound by strict itineraries or timetables, allowing you to spend more time in places that interest you and skip attractions that don’t resonate with your preferences. The level of flexibility enables you to fully embrace the spontaneity and adapt your plans to suit your mood and desires.
  • Customization: With a self-guided tour, you have the ability to tailor your experience to your specific interests and needs. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a food lover, or an outdoor adventurer, you can design an itinerary that revolves around your passions. This level of customization ensures that you get the most out of your trip and have a meaningful and enriching experience.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Self-guided tours often prove to be more budget-friendly compared to guided tours. With no additional fees for guides or tour operators, you have more control over your expenses. You can choose accommodations, restaurants, and activities that align with your budget, allowing you to stretch your travel funds further and potentially explore more destinations.
  • Privacy and Independence: While guided tours are great for meeting fellow travelers and socializing, self-guided tours offer a higher level of privacy and independence. You have the freedom to explore at your own pace and immerse yourself in the destination on your own terms. This solitude can provide a sense of tranquility and allow for a deeper connection with the surroundings.
  • Authentic Local Experiences: With a self-guided tour, you have the opportunity to truly immerse yourself in the local culture. Without the confines of a guided group, you can interact with the locals, try authentic cuisine, and explore hidden gems that may not be included on traditional guided tour itineraries. This authenticity adds an extra layer of depth and richness to your travel experience.

These advantages make self-guided tours an appealing option for travelers who value independence, freedom, and the ability to craft their own unique journey. With these benefits in mind, it’s time to delve into how self-guided tours work and the steps involved in planning one.

How Self-Guided Tours Work

Self-guided tours operate on the principle of giving travelers the tools and resources they need to explore a destination independently. Here’s a general overview of how self-guided tours work:

  • Research and Planning: The first step in embarking on a self-guided tour is conducting thorough research about the destination. This includes gathering information about key attractions, local customs, transportation options, and accommodation choices. Use guidebooks, travel websites, and online forums to gather insights and recommendations.
  • Choosing a Route or Itinerary: Once you have a good understanding of the destination, you can select a route or itinerary based on your interests and time constraints. Decide on the attractions you want to visit, the order in which you want to see them, and the duration of your stay at each location. Consider any logistical factors such as transportation availability and opening hours of attractions.
  • Obtaining Travel Resources: The next step is to gather the necessary travel resources to navigate the destination. This can include maps, guidebooks, mobile apps, and GPS devices. These resources will provide you with detailed directions, points of interest, and valuable insights about the attractions you’ll encounter along the way.
  • Arranging Accommodation and Transportation: Once you have a rough itinerary, it’s time to book your accommodations and arrange transportation. Depending on the destination and your preferences, this can range from reserving hotels and rental cars to organizing train or bus tickets. Make sure to consider the proximity of your accommodations to the attractions you plan to visit.
  • Exploring at Your Own Pace: The beauty of a self-guided tour is the freedom to explore at your own pace. Follow the suggested route, but don’t be afraid to deviate from it if something catches your eye or piques your interest. Take as much time as you need at each attraction, leisurely stroll through the streets, and savor the local cuisine. The pace is entirely up to you.
  • Engaging with Local Culture: To truly make the most of your self-guided tour, engage with the local culture. Interact with the locals, try regional specialties, and participate in cultural activities. This will provide a deeper understanding and appreciation of the destination and create memorable experiences along the way.
  • Documenting Your Journey: Lastly, don’t forget to document your journey. Capture photos, write in a travel journal, or create a blog to commemorate your experiences. Sharing your adventures with others can be a great way to inspire fellow travelers and reminisce about your self-guided tour in the future.

Remember, self-guided tours offer the freedom and flexibility to design your own adventure. While they require some upfront planning and research, the reward is a truly personalized and immersive travel experience. Now that you have the basic understanding of how self-guided tours work, let’s move on to discussing the steps involved in choosing and planning a self-guided tour.

Choosing and Planning a Self-Guided Tour

Choosing and planning a self-guided tour requires careful consideration and attention to detail. Follow these steps to ensure a successful and enjoyable experience:

  • Selecting Your Destination: Start by researching and identifying destinations that align with your interests and travel preferences. Consider factors such as climate, cultural attractions, outdoor activities, and historical significance. Narrow down your options to a few destinations that pique your curiosity.
  • Researching the Destination: Once you’ve chosen a destination, delve deeper into its attractions, transportation options, and local customs. Use guidebooks, travel websites, and online forums to gather valuable insights and recommendations from fellow travelers who have visited the location.
  • Determining the Duration: Assess how much time you have available for your self-guided tour. Consider the number of attractions you want to visit and the pace at which you prefer to explore. Keep in mind that some destinations may require more time to fully immerse yourself in the experience.
  • Deciding on Activities and Attractions: Identify the key activities and attractions you want to experience during your self-guided tour. Make a list of must-see landmarks, museums, parks, local markets, or any other points of interest that resonate with your interests.
  • Mapping Out Your Itinerary: Take into account the location of each attraction and plan a logical route to follow. Consider grouping attractions that are in close proximity to optimize your time and minimize unnecessary travel. Also, factor in any operating hours or seasonal closures to ensure you can visit each attraction during your chosen dates.
  • Booking Accommodation: Research and book your accommodations in advance. Look for options that are conveniently located near the attractions you plan to visit. Consider factors such as comfort, price, amenities, and availability.
  • Arranging Transportation: Determine the most suitable mode of transportation for your self-guided tour. This could include renting a car, using public transportation, or opting for alternative options such as bicycles or scooters. Be sure to consider the infrastructure, traffic conditions, and accessibility of your chosen destination.
  • Obtaining Travel Resources: Collect the necessary travel resources such as maps, guidebooks, or digital apps. These tools will provide you with essential information and help you navigate the destination with ease. Consider downloading offline maps or using GPS devices to ensure accurate directions.
  • Preparing for the Unexpected: As with any travel experience, it’s important to be prepared for unforeseen circumstances. Familiarize yourself with the local emergency contact information, purchase travel insurance, and research any health or safety precautions relevant to your destination.
  • Remaining Flexible: While planning is crucial, it’s equally important to remain flexible during your self-guided tour. Allow for adjustments and spontaneous decisions along the way. Embrace unexpected opportunities and be open to deviations from your original itinerary.

By following these steps and putting in the necessary time and effort into the planning process, you’ll be well-prepared to embark on an exciting self-guided tour. Now, let’s explore some tips to ensure a successful and rewarding self-guided tour experience.

Tips for a Successful Self-Guided Tour

Embarking on a self-guided tour can be a thrilling and fulfilling experience. To ensure a successful and memorable adventure, consider these tips:

  • Do Thorough Research: Before setting off on your self-guided tour, immerse yourself in research about the destination. Familiarize yourself with local customs, transportation options, and important landmarks. This will make navigating the destination much easier and help you better understand and appreciate the local culture.
  • Create a Detailed Itinerary: Plan your itinerary in detail, including the attractions you want to visit and the activities you want to partake in. However, allow for flexibility and be open to making changes along the way. Strike a balance between having a plan and embracing spontaneous discoveries.
  • Get Reliable Travel Resources: Invest in reliable travel resources such as guidebooks, maps, or mobile apps that are specific to the destination. These resources will provide you with valuable information, such as historical facts, local tips, and directions, allowing you to navigate with confidence.
  • Stay Organized: Keep all your travel documents, maps, and itineraries organized in a safe and easily accessible manner. Consider using digital platforms or apps to store digital copies of your documents for quick and convenient access.
  • Learn Basic Local Phrases: Learning a few basic phrases in the local language can go a long way in fostering connections and showing respect to the locals. Phrases like “hello,” “thank you,” and “excuse me” can help break the ice and enhance your overall experience.
  • Be Mindful of Local Customs: Respect the local customs and traditions of the destination you’re visiting. Familiarize yourself with appropriate dress codes, tipping customs, and cultural norms. Being respectful and considerate towards the local culture will enrich your interactions and create a positive impression.
  • Stay Connected: Ensure you have reliable means of communication during your self-guided tour. Purchase a local SIM card or consider using international data plans to stay connected with loved ones and have access to online maps or emergency assistance if needed.
  • Practice Responsible Tourism: Be mindful of the impact you have on the environment, local communities, and cultural sites. Respect nature, dispose of waste properly, support local businesses, and leave a positive and sustainable footprint wherever you go.
  • Stay Safe: Prioritize your safety throughout your self-guided tour. Stay aware of your surroundings, avoid isolated areas at night, and follow any safety advice provided by locals or authorities. It’s also advisable to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and trip cancellations.
  • Embrace the Journey: Finally, remember that a self-guided tour is all about the journey and the experiences you encounter along the way. Embrace the independence, take in the sights, tastes, and sounds of the destination, and create lasting memories. Allow yourself to get lost in the magic of the journey and enjoy every moment.

By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll be well-equipped to embark on a successful and rewarding self-guided tour. Now, let’s explore some popular destinations that are ideal for this style of travel.
