Iggy Pop Unites With Duff McKagan, Chad Smith at Ferocious ‘Every Loser’ Tour Launch in L.A.

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Over the past few years, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan have played just about every stadium on the planet with their respective bands. But on Friday night, they scaled down drastically at the 1,100-seat Regent Theater in Los Angeles to serve as Iggy Pop ‘s rhythm section at the launch of his five-show West Coast tour.

The supergroup, which also features guitarists Andrew Watt and Jamie Hince, spent 80 minutes ripping through songs from Iggy’s excellent new LP Every Loser , and classics from his six-decade career, both solo and with the Stooges. It was, without any doubt, one of the greatest rock concerts I’ve seen in years. It was also a vivid reminder that Iggy, even a day shy of his 77th birthday, remains the most electrifying frontman on the planet.

Editor’s picks

He could only have been referencing “I Want To Be Your Dog,” and it was a particularly feral version of the 1969 Stooges classic. As the final notes rang out, including a few bars of “No Fun,” it occurred to me that everyone who played on that original song was dead besides Iggy himself. This is a band that’s been through a lot of misery and suffering, but there’s no better way to honor for Iggy to honor his fallen bandmates than to keep their music alive like this.

Iggy Pop rocks out onstage.

Iggy Pop turns 76 (!) on Friday, April 21.

To celebrate, the ageless rock icon is playing concerts with his star-studded supergroup The Losers all over the west coast on his brief ‘Sold Out! Tour’ this month.

Starting April 20, Iggy and The Losers are embarking on a five-concert tour that will send him to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas.

And if you need last-minute tickets to see Iggy sing alongside members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns N’ Roses and The Kills, you can still snag seats .

And oddly enough — tickets are very affordable .

At the time of publication, we found some tickets going for as low as $35 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Not a bad price to see a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee live.

Want to hear “Lust For Life,” “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” “Search And Destroy,” “The Passenger,” “Candy” and many more of Iggy’s timeless genre-defying hits live in concert?

Here’s how you can make that happen.

Recent tour reviews

I enjoyed his real performance.

But Iggy looked so exhausted and tired due to the 3 stages in a row and the rare heat in the UK.

He must cut the show and it was too short not to play"No Fun" etc. "Jean Genie " become the last song.

I went to the UK in order to experience the real Iggy,

and he gave me power and notified the important things how to live and survive in this confused world.

Thank you and See you again. Iggy very soon !

Unbelievable. The energy was incredible and it was a pleasure to be a part of. He may be knocking on bit this didn't stop Iggy getting involved in several stage dives aswell as spending a good 10 minutes out in the crowd just getting involved.

Concert Review: Iggy Pop & The Losers | Las Vegas, April 29, 2023

The punk icon & his all-star band destroy Sin City with a monumental performance.

L AS VEGAS — “Wise people say that this life is a dream,” Iggy Pop reflects in his unmistakable signature baritone, pausing mid-song to survey the worshipful fans at his feet in The Palms ’ Pearl Theatre . “This is no fucking dream. This is all we’ve got. This is fucking IT, baby. And I need you.

“Oh yes, I need you,” he stresses, pointing at the crowd as his ironically named band of Losers chug away behind him. “And I want you. I want you. I wanna fucking get inside you. And you. And you. And you. And you. So here I go … ”

Pop eases into the last verse of The Stooges ’ classic I Wanna Be Your Dog and the musicians follow his lead, slowly cranking the song up to a thundering finale. The audience erupts. The tipsy guy next to me — who has both hands clamped to the sides of his head as if it might explode with amazement and joy — turns and grabs me in a combination bro hug / handshake. “Man, I’m so glad I got to see this with you,” he says, even though we met less than two hours ago and don’t know each other’s names. “This has been incredible.”

To put it another way: Life is no fucking dream. But this night? A fucking dream come true.

•          •          •

“I ggy Pop ?!” responds the casino doorman with a mix of shock and awe after asking how I’m spending my Sin City Saturday night. “He’s still around? Wow. I had no idea.”

He’s not alone. Despite being the godfather of punk, Pop remains the world’s forgotten boy in Vegas. While massive animated billboards for Adele , Rod , Usher , Miranda , Donny , 50 Cent , Wiz Khalifa , Elle King , Keith Urban , Weezer and more blanket the neon-soaked Strip , Iggy’s craggy mug is nowhere to be found. In fact, aside from one poster in the Palms itself, the only hoopla I can find about Pop’s local stop is a two-page spread in a tourist rag. And it’s basically boilerplate and background — no interview, no quotes, not much to explain how historic this show truly is.

iggy pop tour shirt 2023

Allow me to explain. It’s simple, really: Iggy is fucking back. Not that he went away. Not totally, anyway. But he’s been kinda quiet for the past two decades. Aside from 2016’s Josh Homme -helmed Post-Pop Depression , he hasn’t made a solo rock disc since 2003’s Skull Ring . Instead, he’s crooned jazz standards, adapted French novels into concept albums, recited poetry like Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night over ambient soundscapes. He even gave up stage-diving. And who can blame him? He just turned 70-goddamn-6, fer chrissake. In his own words, he’s “rickety.” He sometimes uses a cane. His taut torso once resembled a Greek god; now he’s like a troll doll that’s been microwaved. Bottom line: He’s an elder statesman of rock. And he’s been acting like one.

iggy pop tour shirt 2023

Naturally, many of them have been happy to reprise their roles onstage for a handful of shows. McKagan and Smith are the rhythm section. Watt and Kills guitarist Jamie Hince handle the fretwork. There’s also a keyboard player I don’t recognize. With respect to Homme, this is Pop’s best band since The Stooges . Word is this slate of five West Coast shows — Vegas is the last stop — might be their only gigs.

Either way, it’s the sort of lineup that makes you feel you won the lotto. I suspect that goes for the players as well. After all, these guys grew up on Iggy. They probably played these songs in basements and garages. To do them with the man himself must be like carving your initials in Mount Rushmore after decades of climbing. Sure, most folks will never know you did it. But you’ll know. As will people who care. That includes people like Gogol Bordello singer Eugene Hütz , who I met at the Punk Rock Museum the day before. “Iggy is a tremendous influence on everyone in here,” he told me. “I don’t think anybody would be doing anything onstage if it weren’t for him.” It’s a bit of a stretch. But only a bit.

iggy pop tour shirt 2023

Hütz ’s point is not lost on the 2,000 fans of all ages and stripes in The Pearl , many of whom queued up in a massive, snaking line for shirts (I left with two) and posters (signed ones go for $150). And it’s not lost on the punk bassist-turned-painter (walls, not canvases) beside me. It’s his first Iggy show. He’s naturally excited — and impressed that I flew in for this. I tell him I wouldn’t have missed it, and that he’s in for a treat. Hell, we all are.

T hings get rolling around 9 p.m., after a half-decent but unnecessary set by Grace McKagan (yes, Duff’s daughter) and The Nepo Babies (not really their name, but it should be). When the lights dim, Grace’s dad and his cohorts take the stage and lay down a slowly shuffling blues vamp. Iggy saunters in from the wings reciting The News For Andy , an Every Loser interlude inspired by Warhol’s suggestion back in the ’70s that Iggy just read the newspaper out loud over his songs. (When Pop hits the line: “Have you been injured in an auto accident? Get cash!” it reminds me of a joke billboard outside my hotel: “Been injured searching for dead bodies in Lake Mead? Demand compensation!” Only in Vegas.)

While fans are still finding their feet, the band launch straight into the one-two punch of Neo Punk and Frenzy , a pair of Only Loser standouts. Iggy still sounds great, though his voice is rougher and more ragged around the edges these days. As he delivers the goods, McKagan strides about in a black leather vest adorned with the Heartbreakers ’ L.A.M.F. logo in pink on the right breast. Hince slides and glides across the stage in white shoes, jiving like James Brown . Watt is a whirling dervish, sprinting back and forth, striking guitar-god poses and peeling off blistering solos. Smith is a monster behind the kit, forsaking the funkiness and finesse of his day job for relentless pounding and propulsion, lobbing drumsticks into the crowd every few bars. (By the end of the show, he’s flung what seems like half a lumber yard into the audience.) On their own, they would be a must-see band. But of course, they’re all here for the same reason we are: To celebrate the one and only Ig.

The man of the hour does not disappoint. Shirtless as always, his melted-candle body on unabashed display, Pop commands the stage with effortless swagger, despite his advancing age and lurching gait (Iggy’s right leg is shorter than his left, the result of scoliosis, a teenage football mishap or some combo of the two, depending on which story you believe). But even if he’s not as limber as he once was, he’s still one of rock’s most compelling frontmen, flinging and flailing himself about as he eggs everyone on with demands of “Come on, baby, come on!” and “Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go!” McKagan’s daughter heeds his call, dancing in the stage-right wings with a gaggle of women.

iggy pop tour shirt 2023

Iggy and co. reward them (and us) by taking it up another notch with the stone-cold ’70s classics Raw Power and T.V. Eye . The former barrels like a freight train, topped with its iconic one-finger piano line; the latter slams and pounds, with Smith hammering down the beat. The band sound like they’ve been together for years, not weeks, stretching out the arrangement so Iggy can roam the stage, dance and interact with fans.

After the mellower Sixteen , a comparative deep cut rom Lust For Life , Iggy pauses (or lets us pause) for breath. “Hey, fucking thanks for showing up!” he enthuses. “I see you back there … We’re filming and taping tonight. So if you want a little immortality, you could jump off the balcony, you could bum-rush the stage, you could strip, you could stage-dive and be wild.” Over the course of the 85-minute set, a few fans take him up on his offer, mounting the stage to dance or dive. But the only true immortal here is Iggy. Marvelling at Pop’s youthful energy, my seatmate and new bestie informs me, “My grandfather was 72 when he died, and he looked like an old man.” To be fair, so does Iggy. But somehow, he’s also ageless, ephemeral, constantly on the move and in the moment. He can’t stop the clock or defeat gravity, but he refuses to surrender to the forces of nature and the laws of physics. He will not go gently.

Following solid renditions of Every Loser ’s Strung Out Johnny and the shuffling classic The Passenger — with the crowd belting out the “La, la, la la” refrain en masse as Iggy approvingly nods, “That’s beautiful” — comes the mission statement / Trainspotting anthem / cruise-line jingle / signature song Lust For Life . Smith kicks it off about 10 bpms slower than normal, but it still packs a mighty punch. As does the Raw Power gem Gimme Danger , which builds from an ominous darkly jangling rocker into a blazing showpiece for Watt.

As the set list enters double digits, Iggy and co. lock in and keep the momentum going, alternating newer fare like Modern Day Rip Off and the sell-out ode Comments with vintage treats like the sleazy Loose and the Berlin-era drug dirge Nightclubbing . “Well, here we are,” Iggy proclaims of the latter, “in the perfect fucking town for this song. So let’s take some hard stuff and leave ourselves behind.”

iggy pop tour shirt 2023

But what goes down has got to come up — and Pop, never one for half-measures, takes it all the way to the top. “I’ve only got one fucking thing left,” he announces. “One thing left to say to you … gonna get you! Search and fucking destroy!” And so they do, with the keyboardist and Hince departing so Watt, Smith and McKagan can rip through Iggy’s nihilistic classic as a power trio. As the guitarist wails at the song’s end, Iggy casually tosses his mic over his shoulder and lumbers around waving farewell. His unbuttoned pants start to fall. He turns to face Smith, unconcernedly mooning us — apparently Iggy is going commando tonight — then spins around to give us the half-Monty. While his bandmates leave, he basks at center stage, beating his chest and whipping up the crowd before sauntering off, his ass hanging in the wind. It is the perfect ending — except he isn’t done yet.

iggy pop tour shirt 2023

“I hate waiting for shit myself so I’m not gonna make you wait,” Pop cracks as he returns a minute later for the encore. “This is not fucking Coldplay .” Well, not unless fucking Coldplay decided to play a gorgeous left-field cover of Lou Reed ’s Take A Walk On The Wild Side . Iggy takes a knee to croon — joined by the audience, of course — while Grace McKagan flies in to help out on the “Do-doo-do” refrain, giving Dad a hug before leaving. The song turns into another band showpiece, evolving into a double-time groove-rocker. “We’re gonna walk a little bit,” Iggy offers on the stroll. “We’re not gonna fucking walk on the golf course. We’re not gonna walk in any bourgeois places. We’re not even gonna walk in fucking reality … We’re going to the wild side, baby!” He continues improvising with a final verse: “Playing for you has been a lot of fun / We’ve done the very best we could have done / But now we’re gonna sing a song / About a very special dog…”

Seconds later, Pop drops back to his knees, barking and begging as The Losers unfurl the clanging opening chords of I Wanna Be Your Dog . The energy peaks as a bellowing Iggy plays call-and-response with the crowd on the verses. He lays on his back, clawing at the air like a pup seeking a belly rub as Watt stands over him soloing. Eventually, he rises and hoists the mic stand to his crotch before motioning the band to take it down so he can deliver the dreamy monologue up above that sends my new pal over the top — and before launching into the set-closing garage-rocker Louie Louie (“I gotta go now!”). One last fan leaps onstage to dance while Iggy approvingly watches, rewarding her with a fist-bump, a smile and a hug before ushering her back to the pit. As the song slams home, Smith kicks over his drum kit, scattering pieces hither and yon, walking off with middle fingers hoisted. Iggy laughs and applauds, takes his final bows and hikes into the wings, going gently into that good night. For now.

Iggy Pop live in London: age-defying legend leads congregation of punk icons

July 1: The Godfather of Punk’s headline performance at Dog Day Afternoon – which saw 25,000 old-school fans descend on Crystal Palace Park – proves he’s as vital as ever.

“You feeling good? I feel pretty good!” shouts age-defying punk icon Iggy Pop soon after bounding onto the stage at Crystal Palace Park in south-east London. With the energy of a dog fresh out of its cage, the 76-year-old American artist is here to headline Dog Day Afternoon, a raucous congregation that hosts 25,000 grizzled punks and their heroes, including Iggy, Buzzcocks , Generation Sex and Blondie , as well as Brighton three-piece Lambrini Girls whose barrage of anti-government rage proves that – if there was ever any question – punk still has its place in 2023.

Judging by the sea of mohawks, leather, pin-badge-covered denim jackets, tattoos, piercings and a whole lot of band t-shirts, it quickly becomes apparent that punk has always been more than just a phase, or even a subculture. For many, ever since the scene’s explosion half a century ago, it’s remained a way of life. And, while most of the crowd are here to relive their ‘70s heyday, some ear-defender-carrying parents have brought their children along, presumably with the hope of instilling their music taste in the next generation.

Iggy Pop

And who would be better suited to topping the bill than Michigan’s Iggy Pop? In typical fashion, it takes just seconds for his chest to be on show; removing his black waistcoat reveals a body that’s lived a thousand lives and could tell equally as many stories. You have to wonder why he even bothers to put it on in the first instance. Sauntering from one side of the stage to the other and throwing his mic between each hand as he waves at his diehard fans, the former Stooges frontman is on top form.

Backed by a full live band that includes an impressive brass section, his career-spanning 18-track setlist mostly consists of tracks from the band’s iconic back catalogue, including ‘T.V. Eye’, ‘Raw Power’ and ‘I Want To Be Your Dog’, which becomes a snarling highlight. His own solo hits sound just as vital now as when they were released in 1977, too – particularly the anthemic ‘The Passenger’, which the crowd happily chant at the top of their lungs. Similarly, the jangling guitar riffs of ‘Lust For Life’ bring the classic to raucous life.

There’s only time for two tracks from ‘Every Loser’ , his most recent solo outing, but they are stellar choices, with the primal ‘Modern Day Ripoff’ sounding at home next to classics. Closing with the one-two-punch of ‘Loose’ and the furious ‘Frenzy’ – two tracks with more than half a century between them – there’s no doubt that Iggy Pop’s title as the king of punk remains unchallenged.

Iggy Pop played:

‘Rune’ ‘Five Foot One’ ‘T.V. Eye’ ‘Modern Day Rip Off’ ‘Raw Power’ ‘Gimme Danger ‘The Passenger’ ‘Lust for Life’ ‘The Endless Sea’ ‘Death Trip’ ‘I’m Sick of You’ ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’ ‘Search and Destroy’ ‘Mass Production’ ‘Nightclubbing’ ‘Down on the Street’ ‘Loose’ ‘Frenzy’

Lust for life … Iggy Pop.

Iggy Pop: Every Loser review – punk godfather’s convincing return to shirtless rocking

(Atlantic/Gold Tooth) After jazz crooning, poetry and electronic experimentation, 75-year-old Pop goes back to his roots on his 19th solo album

“I ’m the guy with no shirt who rocks,” announced Iggy Pop ahead of this, his 19th solo album. It’s this perception of the Stooges founder and “Godfather of punk” that’s most cemented in the public consciousness. In recent years, though, the now 75-year-old singer has seemed on a mission to do anything but rock with his shirt off: he turned unlikely jazz crooner for 2009’s Préliminaires , sang Edith Piaf and Beatles covers in French on 2012’s Après and echoed his superlative 1970s David Bowie collaborations on 2016’s Josh Homme-helmed Post Pop Depression . He has also become a much-loved BBC 6 Music DJ and has popped up to provide guest vocals for other artists ranging from Belgian violinist Catherine Graindorge to electronic giants Underworld . On his last solo album, 2019’s quietly reflective Free , he recited poetry by Lou Reed and Dylan Thomas – although it’s hard to tell whether he kept a shirt on while doing so.

Iggy Pop: Every Loser album cover

All of this makes it slightly eyebrow-raising that, at 75, Pop has suddenly returned to harder rocking. When many of his contemporaries are dead or mining their hits in order to continue touring stadiums, rock’s eternal free spirit promises “music made the old-fashioned way”, which will “beat the shit out of you”. His choice of musical foil for this endeavour is one Andrew Watt, the Grammy-winning super-producer whose recent clients have included Miley Cyrus, Morrissey and Elton John. It doesn’t seem the most obvious fit, although Watt’s pedigree with legacy rockers includes Ozzy Osborne’s recent return-to-form solo albums, and he has been highly enthusiastic about working with Pop, a “true fucking icon”. As executive producer, co-writer, guitarist and pianist, Watt has made Iggy Pop’s music sound contemporary but not at the expense of his inimitable voice and character.

Few adult males – never mind septuagenarians – could get away with a lyric like “I’ve got a dick and two balls, that’s more than you all,” on the furious hardcore-ish opener Frenzy, in 2023, but Pop can, and he quickly signals that he won’t enter his later years quietly: “My mind is on fire when I should retire.” The singer is in a similarly time-defying mindset on Modern Day Rip Off, which affectionately pastiches the Raw Power-era Stooges sound down to the plinky-plonk piano, but replaces drugs with a smidgeon of dry self-mockery. As Pop – who gave up substances years ago – drily admits, “I ran out of blow a long time ago / I can’t smoke a J, all my ducks fly away”.

An all-star cast, including Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan, infuse Every Loser with a controlled sense of insouciance. On the riotous Neo Punk , the “Godfather” sounds like the bands he influenced while lampooning what the punk movement has become (“My hair is blue, and my prescription, too”), enjoying himself so much you can hear his chuckles on the recording.

But for all the talk of “music that will beat the shit out of you”, there’s more to Every Loser than hard rock. Strung Out Johnny is a sublime rock ballad in the vein of U2’s One. Pop brings a beautifully wearied vocal to the song, which essays the stages of addiction with the candour and experience of someone who’s lived through them (“First time – you do it with a friend, second time – you do it in bed …”) New Atlantis, a heartfelt pop-rock love letter to Pop’s adopted city of Miami, refers to the threat from rising sea levels (“here, a man can be himself, but she’s sinking into the sea”).

Climate change also informs All the Way Down, a dry-sounding, sleazy rocker that wouldn’t sound out of place on 1979’s New Values. The post-punk track Comments and darkly melodic anti-music industry blast The Regency (“I’m alive, uncompromised”) will no doubt attract attention because they may well be late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins’s final recordings. They are also excellent songs in their own right, the latter tracing a compelling arc from an almost doo-wop introduction to its raging “fuck the regency” finale.

after newsletter promotion

Every Loser’s main flaw is that you’re left wanting more. At around a minute each, curt narratives My Animus and The News for Andy (a Madness-type piano stomp in which Pop deadpans a spoof psychiatry advert) sound underdeveloped. Still, acoustic/piano centrepiece Morning Show is surely one of the most beautifully candid things Pop has ever done. “The pain in my face didn’t come from out of space,” he croons, adding a hint of rawness to the chorus” “I’ll fix my face and go, go and do the morning show.” The song addresses age, vulnerability and the daily grind of being Iggy Pop. In his 76th year, he’s managing it very well.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.
