Internet in Turkey: The best options for tourists

internet tourist turkey

If you’re traveling to Turkey and want to stay connected to the Internet to share your trip on Instagram, keep in touch with your loved ones on WhatsApp or use Google Maps to get to that landmark they recommended, here are your options for having Internet in Turkey.

The best alternative to have internet in Turkey is to buy a SIM card for Turkey , both because it is much cheaper than paying roaming and because it is so easy to use.

But let’s look at all the options, let’s get started!

ALTERNATIVES TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET IN TURKEY

1. sim card for turkey.

A SIM card serves the same function as your phone now, connecting you to the Internet, specifically connecting your device, mobile or tablet, to the network of networks. Only some companies offer you a complete connection service, such as roaming, Internet, calls and data, while others offer you only data, the so-called data-packs.

  • Advantage: it is economical, much cheaper than roaming and Mi-Fi, the former can cost you more than 10 euros for a single minute of Internet connection in Turkey, while the latter, can cost you up to 200 euros if we include purchase of the device, deposits and more.
  • Disadvantage: some companies set up connection days for you and they are not like Mi-Fis or roaming, which charge you per day of Internet access.

WHAT OPTIONS DO I HAVE FOR SIM CARDS FOR TURKEY?

eSIMs are virtual cards that are placed in the hardware (a specific chip) of your mobile or any other device, so you do not have to place any card in any slot. Its name comes from the term “embedded SIM” , eSim, which means integrated SIM card .

If you have some of these devices, you may be interested in purchasing an eSIM:

This virtual card provides you with the same services as a normal physical data SIM card but with the difference that you don’t have to wait for it to arrive at your home. • Turkey SIM Card

2. FREE WI-FI IN TURKEY

internet-turkey-cafe

It is a Wi-Fi point that does not have a password for access, and if it does, it can be provided to you upon request. It is very common in restaurants, cafes, accommodations and shopping centers, which are used as benefits for the user to frequent the place, buy a snack, coffee or even a bottle of water in order to get the desired key. This is a very valid option to have internet in your trip to Turkey but keep in mind that you will only be connected for the time you are in the establishment.

  • Advantage: it has no cost, well, the price that can cost you a coffee, a bottle of water or some candy, in the end it is not a loss because you buy it you will eat it.
  • Disadvantage: you must take into account that many users can hang from this network to access the Internet and it is very safe that your information can be violated by an unscrupulous and seek to steal it.

¿ WHERE TO FIND FREE WI-FI IN TURKEY ?

  • Wiman: it is a free Wifi points search engine, and has 179 thousand points in its register.
  • Establishments: like cafes, restaurants, offices, buses, trains, ferries and, of course, airports.
  • Instabridge: this other search engine will allow you to know the location of the point (in map and described) , which establishment has it and additional information if you download its app.

3. MI-FI IN TURKEY

mifi-for-Turkey

It is a device that, just like a modem, offers you an Internet connection via a Wi-Fi dedicated to you, i.e. private, secure and quality. Very different from Wi-Fi free . A Mi-Fi would be like the previous alternative but only for you. Most Mi-Fis work with a built-in SIM card, and the devices, in conclusion, have the same function as your mobile phone.

  • Advantage: offers you quality internet in Turkey.
  • Disadvantage: the price is high , not like roaming, but much more than a SIM card and you have to carry an extra device. Some companies charge you various fees, from the rental or purchase of the device, to the Internet service and a deposit, in case you lose, break down or get your lucky device stolen.

¿ WHAT KIND OF MI-FI COULD I CHOOSE?

  • Rent Connect: this company offers you three options to return your product, via airport, hotel or accommodation.
  • My Web Spot: it has a five-hour battery and has unlimited data in Turkey.
  • Travel Wi-Fi: free shipping on this company only applies to France, the United States and the United Kingdom.

4. ROAMING IN TURKEY

  • It is a service offered by a mobile operator, which you now surely have, to connect to the Internet, send SMS or make calls abroad . Unlike the previous options, this proposal covers more than the Internet. This service is usually activated automatically, but other operators prefer the user to activate it.
  • Advantage: it is easy to activate and use.
  • Disadvantage: it has a very high price. Each MB of data can cost you from 6 to 12 euros, and if you consume one MB per minute on the Internet, with roaming you will have to pay up to 12 euros for each minute you surf.

¿ WHAT IS THE BEST OPTION TO HAVE INTERNET IN TURKEY?

internet-turkey-doubt

The best one is the one that at a price offers you the benefits you need: quality, speed, security, privacy, good cost and more , and all this is offered by data SIM cards.

We always choose Holafly’s data SIM cards for our trips, because as we mentioned above; these cards will connect you at an excellent 4G speed, with a very good amount of data and with the support of the Turk Telekom network. Keep in mind that you will be able to share your data; keep your WhatsApp number, and receive it for free at home, among other benefits.

MORE INTERNET TIPS FOR TURKEY

  • Be sure to disable your roaming when you arrive in Turkey if you are not going to use it. Some companies offer plans where this service is activated automatically.
  • Take advantage of Wi-Fi free for emergencies , if your data SIM or Pocket Wi-Fi breaks down and you have an emergency; but avoid doing operations where you expose sensitive information.
  • If you are going to buy a data SIM, do not do it in the airports, better buy it before, you save and money and you can choose the package of your preference.

Our Top Pick

sim cards in Turkey for tourists

Airalo E-Sim Cards

If you need a SIM card but don’t have a lot of time, then our top pick for tourist SIM cards in Turkey is the e-Sim packages from Airalo .

You can choose from as little as 1GB for 7 days up to 20 GB for 30 days packages .

The prices are the most affordable and the most transparent we have found compared to local companies and it’s quick and easy to connect. You can read our full review of Airalo in Turkey here .

Why Buy a Prepaid Tourist Sim Card in Turkey?

There are many reasons why you should consider buying a sim card, and not just so you can share Instagram stories.

There are many network providers these days that allow you to use your home network abroad. T-Mobile and 3 are two examples of companies that allow their contract users to use data abroad, but there’s always a catch.

Some network providers only allow their users to use 2G abroad. To put that into perspective for you, it will take you 5 minutes to load a webpage. Other network providers only allow you to use 500MB. This can be used up in a few days and is not suitable for more than a weekend in Istanbul .

So if you want to stay connected, or you need calls and texts while you’re away, the solution is to get a tourist sim card in Turkey.

internet tourist turkey

Getting a Turkish sim card means you have access to fast, reliable data since you are connected to the country’s network. Having fast data is extremely helpful for using things like Google Maps, and Google Translate, and looking up information about attractions or how to get from A to B (such as how to get to Ephesus from Istanbul ).

A local sim card also gives you calls and texts, which is extremely useful when you want to book tours and need to keep in contact with the guide or driver.

But most importantly, having a tourist sim card in Turkey means additional safety. Not only so you can call emergency services, but so you can look up directions when you’re getting lost, you can download maps and GPS tools.

Are you reading this from Turkey? Maybe you need a VPN!

internet tourist turkey

If you’re already in Turkey, there is one thing you absolutely NEED: a reliable VPN .

You may find some of your favorite websites and apps are blocked in Turkey , such as popular hotel site booking.com

A VPN allows you to get passed this ruling and enables you to browse these sites without any hassle, and it’s completely legal.

We use Express VPN when we’re in Turkey and we’d recommend it to anyone. It’s affordable, quick, and easy to use.

Things To Consider Before Buying a Turkish Sim Card

Before you go browsing through the airport service counters, you need to know what to look for in a Turkish sim card. Here are some things you need to consider before making a purchase.

What is the registration process?

Usually, the registration process is quite simple. When we bought our Turkish sim card in Istanbul, we only had to present our passport for them to register our details to the sim card.

internet tourist turkey

How do you activate the sim?

If you’re buying your sim card from a shop, the assistant will set it all up for you and you’ll likely be connected before you’ve even left the store. If you’re buying a sim card online or opting for an E-Sim, does the activation process seem simple? Will you have access to the tech support if you cannot figure it out?

What if you need to top up?

You should make sure to ask how to top up your sim card when purchasing it. If you buy your sim card from a store, they will usually tell you where you can top up such as from kiosks, convenience stores, or coming back to one of their stores.

You are usually given a card with your sim card that has these details on it so do not throw this away.

Where to Get Sim Cards in Turkey

The good news is there are many ways you can buy a sim card in Turkey, so you don’t need to worry about finding a place. Here are three main ways to buy a Turkish sim card…

The Grand Bazaar Istanbul

At The Airport

The most obvious place to get a sim card is at the international airports (Istanbul, Antalya, Izmir etc). However, we don’t recommend this. When we landed at Istanbul airport, we compared deals to what we found online and they were three times more expensive at the airport.

We’re not sure why, but we can only put it down to “airport prices.” Either the sales assistant thought we don’t know any better, or they just charge more for being in the airport.

Unless the airport is missing free WiFi or you absolutely need a sim card before you leave the airport, we don’t recommend this option.

📖 Read more: Is Turkey Expensive?

There are many stores across Turkey where you can get tourist sim cards in Turkey. The main providers are:

  • Turk Telekom

You will find several shops for each of these providers in all major cities, as well as travel company shops offering sim cards as well.

We recommend you visit the official stores for each provider, such as the Vodafone store, Telecom store, or Turk Telekom stores, as they will have the best deal. You won’t have any issues finding a store no matter which area of Turkey you’re visiting, even in small towns like Fethiye.

However, you should scout around different stores . Turkcell does not share its prices online, and we found we were quoted different prices at different stores. You should be sure to visit a few different stores to scout out prices and get the best deal.

Istiklal-Street-Tram

If you’re planning ahead and you have the time to wait for delivery, you can always get an e-sim card online before you visit.

Sometimes you can arrange for the sim to be delivered to your home address, or you can arrange to pick it up when you arrive at the airport. At present, there is no option to do this with the local sim cards in Turkey.

Best Turkish Sim Card Providers for Tourists

Now you know what to look for in a Turkish sim card, here is an overview of each plan available for tourists in Turkey. You can purchase these plans online before you visit, or you can pick them up from any of the network provider stores in Turkey.

Note : due to the fluctuation of the Turkish Lira, Turkcell, and Vodafone have removed their prices from their website and prices vary from store to store. As of August 8th, 2023, we have seen prices anywhere from $25 USD to $28 USD, and you should scout around for the best deal. We try to update these prices regularly, but cannot always keep up with the moving exchange rates. Data Coverage Map

Perhaps the biggest decider on which sim card is best for you is determined by the data coverage. While many Turkish sim cards connect you across the country, there are some patches that coverage cannot reach.

Here is a map of each provider’s data coverage.

Turkcell Data Coverage

internet tourist turkey

As you can see from this data coverage map for Turkcell, the map is washed in red. This means that most of the country is connected to 4G+, even in rural areas. You’ll find no problems finding data coverage wherever you visit, as even Cappadocia has 4G and 4G+.

If you are planning a road trip and will pass through some of these rural areas, this is the best network provider for you in terms of data coverage. There are not many areas that have 5G with Turkcell.

Telekom Data Coverage

internet tourist turkey

As you can see from the map above, Telekom has pretty good data coverage in the cities with most areas seeing 4G+ network service. In the region of Cappadocia, you can see there are 3G, 4G and some spots with 4G+ in most towns. In Istanbul, it is possible to connect to 5G.

There are a lot of rural areas in Turkey that don’t have connectivity according to this data coverage map, but these areas don’t tend to be on the main tourist trail. For tourists, Telekom provides decent data coverage, but if you are visiting Cappadocia you might find some areas a bit spotty.

Vodafone Data Coverage

internet tourist turkey

Vodafone has similar connectivity as Telekom, but with few areas connecting to 5G. If you are sticking to the main tourist areas and not planning a road trip, the data coverage provided by Vodafone in Turkey will suffice.

e-Sim Cards for Turkey

Another option is to get an eSIM card. These are great for people who don’t have the time to find a sim card shop or you’re not visiting for long enough to make the purchase worth it.

internet tourist turkey

eSIMS work by allowing you to buy flexible data packages without the need to buy a sim card. eSIM companies usually connect you to the local network, as they have deals with the providers who operate there.

They are quick and convenient, especially if you are planning to visit multiple countries on your trip.

Here are some eSIM providers we would recommend:

Prepaid Sim Cards vs Pocket WiFi

If you’re just after a sim card for the data, then you might consider getting a pocket WiFi instead. These are small gadgets that allow you to connect to a mobile hotspot from wherever you are.

If you’re on the beach, simply connect to your pocket WiFi and you can share photos, chat with friends, and browse the internet just as you would with data. They also connect you to the whole of Turkey, and not just limit you to a region or city.

internet tourist turkey

You can also connect to more than one device, so if you’re traveling as a family and everyone needs mobile internet, this could be better valued than getting everyone a sim card.

Pocket WiFi’s are usually expensive to buy, but fortunately, you can rent one for your trip and pick them up and drop them off at the airport. The fee is determined by how long you need it for.

Here’s where you can pick up pocket WiFis in Turkey…

Tips for Buying a Turkish Sim Card

Before you run off to buy your sim card, I have a few more words of advice for you.

  • Don’t buy the sim card from the airport. The deals we were offered were a lot more expensive than in the city. We’re not sure why, but they were working out to be around 3x the price.
  • Scout around for the best deals. Unfortunately, some companies do not advertise their prices and we found that the price varied depending on which shop we visited. Go to a few and compare prices.
  • Remember the exchange rate for the Lira changes dramatically. You may find that the price of a sim card changes from week to week, this is because the exchange rate for the Lira is always changing. You should have an idea of prices in USD and then convert it to Lira on the day. In fact, many stores in Turkey are now accepting Euros or British Sterling instead, so if you’re visiting from Europe, be sure to carry some of Euros as well.
  • Keep your receipt and the packaging. The little card that the sim card comes in usually has details on how to top up and emergency numbers, as well as your sim card’s pin code, so don’t throw this away.
  • Don’t leave the store until you’re up and running. If there’s a problem and you’ve left, you need to go back and get it fixed. This adds more time and effort. It should connect you within minutes, but sometimes it can take up to 15 minutes to an hour. So just wait around until you’re good to go.
  • Don’t remove your sim card unless you’re finished with it. The sim card is locked with a pin number (found on the card that the sim card comes in), which you need to enter to be able to open your mobile phone. If you forget your pin, you’ll be unable to use your phone if you take the sim card out and put it back in again.

FAQs About Turkey Sim Cards for Tourists

Here’s what people usually ask us about sim cards for tourists in Turkey…

Can tourists get a SIM card in Turkey?

Yes, tourists only need to show their passports to get a sim card anywhere in Turkey.

What is the best SIM card to use in Turkey?

In our opinion, the Telekom 40 GB data plan is the best value deal for tourists. If you want good connectivity, the Turkcell 20 GB plan has the best data across the country.

How much is the SIM card in Turkey?

This is dependent on the provider and the plan. You can find plans for as little as $2.50 USD, to as much as $40 USD. The most popular options are around $25 USD.

Can I use WhatsApp in Turkey?

Yes, you can use Whatsapp in Turkey.

The Verdict: Best Sim Card in Turkey for Tourists

As you can see there are a lot of choices to choose from when picking the best Turkish sim card for tourists. When we visited, we chose a Turkcell sim card for tourists because we planned to stay longer than a month and were traveling to more rural areas.

We were quite happy with Turkcell and found we always had connectivity, even when hiking in Cappadocia. We also found it easy to top up by visiting the store and asking for assistance. Their staff spoke English and were very helpful.

At the time, we believed Turkcell to be the best value for money. You get decent network coverage and 40GB lasts a long time, plus the price makes it a pretty good deal for those who need a lot of data. You can stream movies on long-distance buses for that amount.

However, we have started using the Airalo E-Sim Card because they are more transparent with their prices, and they also connect to the Vodafone Turkey AND Turk Telekom networks. If you only need data and no calls, this is the cheapest and most convenient option.

However, if your phone doesn’t support E-Sim Cards, then Telekom is the cheapest option, just be sure to shop around for the best price.

So in short, for the best data coverage, go for Turkcell, for the best-priced data plan, go for Telekom.

Hiya Sean & Louisa,

This is an awesome explanation. ‘Short’, straightforward and easy to understand. My family and I will be visiting Antalya and Istanbul in the summer (I know, 🥵 😅). And this has given us enough infos in term of connectivity (our flight lands 10:00pm). Keep on writing, I enjoy your writing. Best, Yuni

Hi, thank you for the in-depth guide on data/sim in Turkey. For the E-sim, I can’t seem to find the same deal of 20gb+200mins at 13USD on the onesimcard website? Can you advise how to get this done? Thank you

Hi Sel, I think you are referring to the OneSim, eSim card which sadly doesn’t have that deal anymore. The best deal for eSIMs (I think) is the Airlo eSim, which gives you 10gb of data for 30 days, for $18.00 USD. You can see the Airlo deals here .

hello, the prepaid sim card prices you posted, are they the prices at the airport or the normal price? thank you

From our experience, no the prepaid sim prices at the airport were a lot higher. I can’t remember exactly the price now because it was a few months since I last visited Turkey, but it was definitely cheaper to buy a sim card in the city.

Arrived at Antalya Airport yesterday (04/03/2023) sims cards were on sale for over 1100tl (€55), total rip off! The hotel I’m staying at was offering them for €35, as we arrived after 9pm local time most of the shops were closed so will head into town and see what the prices are, surely will be cheaper. I will update this side with my findings.

Hi Habs, thanks for letting us know about the prices you saw! It’s a shame that it’s so much more expensive at Antalya airport as well. I hope you are able to find a better deal by going into the shops today. We found the shops were the cheapest option in Istanbul.

Hello. We are planning to arrive at the Istanbul airport on May 1 and will need GPS from there as we will be driving around Turkey for 18 days as far East as Cappadocia. How do we avoid buying the Turkcell or Telekom SIM at the airport? We live in the US. Thank you.

It will probably be better for you to get an e-Sim card if that’s the case. You can find great deals on Airlo.

If you go to app store and get Maps.me (Green square with suit case in it) you can then through WIFI search the world or in your case Turkey and as you home in it will prompt to download the map. Once you have done this you dont need a phone signal just use like Google maps. Just second check the route because sometimes it tries to be too clever and take short cuts that no longer there. Also make sure you download all the maps there may be more than 1for Turkey. Load now and practice locally to experience it; you can drop pins find walking trails etc, etc at no cost.

Hi Mark, thank you for the advice you shared. MapsMe is a great app and is really helpful for navigating around Turkey, especially if you want to do some hiking.

I went to Turkcell in the Mall of Istanbul today and asked for the Tourist Welcome Pack. The guy who helped me said the pack would cost me 800 TRL in stead of the advertised 165 TRL. Total rip off!!! Do they really think tourists are stupid?????

Hi Adriaan, I’m sorry to hear this happened to you. There are unfortunately some shops that try to take advantage of tourists, though we have not been to the shop you mentioned. I hope you were able to find a better deal at another store.

Today at Izmir city centre I went to some Turkcell and Vodafone shops and they only had one option for tourists with 20GB and it cost around 600 TRL. I went to a few different shops, all similar prices. And they didn’t have any official flyer or poster with the values, you just need to trust what the guy tells you. A bit sketchy, I find! No official info at the store. I was wondering where can I find these deals of 169 TRL?

Hi Marina, unfortunately, Turkcell and Vodafone have stopped advertising their prices online and we are always hearing of people being quoted different amounts from different shops. If you are sure you want to use their sim package, the only way to find the best deal is to go to different stores and compare prices. It’s not convenient and can be very frustrating for the consumer. At present, only Telekom are advertising their prices online and it’s much cheaper than 600 TL. Their coverage is not as good but it should be good enough if you just visit the tourist places: https://www.turktelekom.com.tr/tt-en/Pages/prepaid-tourist-sim-turkey.aspx

Thank you for your reply. I see the advertised price on the Turk Telekom website as 85 TL for the 25GB package. But today I went to the Turk Telekom shop in Izmir centre and they told me the price is 558 TL. I still can’t understand what’s happening… are all the shops trying to rip me off, or have the sim card prices gone up insanely in the last few months? Are the shops even allowed to sell at a different price than the one advertised online?

Hi Marina, I don’t see the package you mentioned on the Turkcell website, perhaps you were looking at the prepaid sim rather than the Tourist Sim Card. A prepaid sim is for locals and cannot be bought by tourists. Sometime in early 2023, Turkcell and Vodafone removed their prices from their website for this because the Lira is always fluctuating. The exchange rate in March 2023 is at an all-time low which is suspected to be due to the earthquakes . I believe the prices you are seeing are a result of the exchange rate dropping. As of this time, it seems the most affordable way to get data in Turkey as a tourist is to choose an eSim.

What about BIM sim card. Prepaid

We didn’t include BIM as we have not used BIMcell or have any experience with them. I see that you can get them from the BIM supermarkets, which is handy.

Hello, if I take off the sim cart and leave turkey when I come back to Turkey could I use it again?

Usually with these tourist sim cards, they are registered for a period of time only. Once that period is over, you need to purchase another one. If you had a 30 day sim card, left Turkey, and came back within the 30 days, then it should work fine. If you leave for a longer period of time, then you would need to get another tourist sim when you return back to Turkey.

Thanks very much guys! Extremely helpful Nick

Thanks for this, very clear and just what I needed.

I see Turk Telekom prices have gone up on their website (hardly surprising, given Turkish inflation and the exchange rate) but at least they are still quoting them and they look good value.

Is there any additional cost on top of this to get the physical prepaid SIM that you then activate the Prepaid Tourist Plan on?

Hi Peter, thanks for reaching out. There are no additional costs on top of the prepaid tourist plan. The fee includes the data package and the sim card combined.

Hi guys, great article and very helpful indeed. I had normally used roaming on my phone on previous visits. Since the UK left the EU mobile providers have cheekily removed the roaming to Turkey and charging a lot now which won’t be feasible for longer visits. With a view of getting a tourist sim I just sent a message to Vodafone Turkey as the price was not listed on their website. It is just wrong to advertise a package without the price clearly. They came back with a quote of 562 TL for a 20GB plan for 28 days. Whereas the T&Cs link states a different price. Very misleading and deceptive. Anyways looking at more options. Will share if I find something better. At this point Turk Telekom and Bimcell are looking better if only they honour the advertised prices.

Update – Turk Telekom customer services quoted 473 TL for a blank SIM card and 190 for 50GB data for 28 days. 663 TL Total. This again is extremely misleading as no mention of the extortionate charge for a blank SIM card on Turk Telekom website. They only advertise 110 TL for 20GB and 190 TL for 50GB plans.

Hi Rick, thanks for the update. This is surprising to hear as we used Telekom sim cards and were not charged a Sim Card price. It seems that times have changed.

Looks that way. I’m off to Kusadasi in a couple of weeks. Will update you with latest my findings 🙂

Thank you for your clear and informative article. Regarding esim card Airalo, I’m traveling with a family of 5. Some are not very good in technology or don’t have credit card. How can I help them to buy the e-card? A bit silly question but I wonder can I buy multiple ones and then transfer to their phone or they need to buy it with their phone?

Hi Mer, Airalo have some great tutorials on their Youtube Channel that show you how to activate the plans and set it up. You can view the Youtube Channel here.

Hi guys, check out esim-turkey.com, they have unlimited data volume for any budget, like 16,95€ for three days to 89,95€ for 90 days. I happened to come across the link for them.

Hi Star, thank you for passing this on. The deals on this site look to be the same as the TRASST e-sim deals, however I don’t know that this site you suggest is reputable as it doesn’t specify the company. We would recommend booking through Trasst instead, as this is a reputable company and has the same prices on their official website.

A Tourist’s Guide to Using Internet in Turkey

One of the most overlooked problems about traveling to another country is staying connected to the Internet without going broke. We all want to both stay in touch with the world and our friends & family, and share our best moments during our trips on social media. More importantly, you may have to stay in touch with your job during your trip, and you will certainly need to use a GPS application abroad. If you are planning a trip to Turkey and have the same worries, here’s everything you need to know about Internet in Turkey for tourists .

Get a Prepaid SIM Card

The most common way of acquiring Internet connection in a foreign country is buying a prepaid SIM card. In Turkey, there are 3 network providers: Vodafone, Turkcell and Turk Telekom (formerly known as Avea). While their rates are actually quite similar and they change constantly, Turkcell is the most popular network provider in Turkey and they generally lead the competition with slightly larger coverage, so unless you come by a great price from other providers, you can choose Turkcell. But bear in mind that Turkey is a big country and the service may not be available everywhere.

But getting a prepaid SIM card in Turkey is not as simple as giving the cash. If you plan on staying longer than 120 days, you need to register your phone to the Turkish government by paying a hefty fee and pay taxes, or your phone will be blocked. You also need to show your passport while getting the card. Plus, if you somehow exceed your data, you will face very high fees, so be careful. It is generally a good idea to get a SIM card if you plan on staying more than 2-3 weeks in Turkey.

Choose Your Pass

Choose from one of Istanbul Tourist Pass® options below providing Free access to 100+ Top Attractions, Tours and essential Local Services with over 80% savings.

2 Days Pass

Child(5-12), order total.

If you decide to get a prepaid SIM card, do so in the official stores of Vodafone, Turk Telekom or Turkcell, not in other stores; they are resellers and the prices will be higher than normal. Also, even if they are official stores, the stores in the airport are often more expensive than the ones in the city center, so if you want to save as much money as you can, wait until you get to the city before you get a SIM card.

Use Wi-Fi Hot Spots

If you are not planning on staying in Turkey for long and you are planning on staying in a hotel with free Wi-Fi, then you are in luck as you can just register to the hotel’s Wi-Fi and start using it.

The obvious con of this is that it will disconnect as soon as you go out of the range, so in order to keep using Wi-Fi hot spots, you will need to constantly go to cafés and restaurants and ask for their Wi-Fi passwords. Another con is that your Internet speed will be slow because dozens, or sometimes hundreds of people will be using the same Internet as you.

Rent a Pocket Wi-Fi (Mobile Hot Spot)

One of the more sensible, practical and affordable solutions for getting Internet for tourists in Turkey is to rent a mobile hot spot.

Its biggest pro by far is that up to 10 separate devices can connect to it at the same time, which means you do not have to get a SIM card for every single person you are traveling with; just get one mobile hot spot and you are good to go.

A con of using only a pocket Wi-Fi is that you cannot call anyone, but messaging apps like WhatsApp have already brought free voice and video call services, so that should not be a big issue during your short trip. But if you absolutely must call or receive calls during your Istanbul tour you can combine your mobile hot spot with a SIM card.

Use the free IBB Wi-Fi Around the City

Since April 2014, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has begun providing free Wi-Fi hot spots on various places in Istanbul, particularly in crowded touristic districts and neighborhoods like Blue Mosque Eminonu, Besiktas and Taksim. It is completely free, but you do have to register first. If you can manage to register without any problems, you get 1 GB of free Internet every day with 2 Mbps speed, which is enough for a quick scroll in social media, upload some pictures or check your e-mails. Other than that, it is not a reliable solution. First of all, you won’t be near these hot spots all day. Second, sometimes it will be extremely slow due to overload on the hot spot. Sometimes you may not even be able to connect to it.

Change to an International Plan with Your Original GSM Provider

If you truly do not want to bother with getting a prepaid SIM card, a mobile hot spot or trying to connect to all of the free Wi-Fis you find around like café, restaurant or hotel hot spots, then the easiest way to solve this is to get an international plan with your GSM provider that includes Turkey. No need to register your phone, SIM or carry a device, and no slow internet with public hot spots. But of course, that comes with a price. International service plans, for both Internet and calls, are almost always extremely expensive. It can go up to 3-digit dollars just for a single gigabyte of data. Plus, since you will be traveling everywhere in a foreign country like Turkey, you will need affordable roaming (continued data when you go outside of your Internet provider’s coverage area) prices. Unless you are rich or you get a very good deal with good roaming prices with your provider, we do not recommend this option.

Five Ways to Get a Good Internet Connection When Visiting Turkey As a Tourist

Would you really want to miss the excellent Mediterranean beaches, ancient history, or delicious sweet treats of Turkey without the ability to go online and share your travel experiences with your friends and family? Probably not. If staying connected to the internet while on the go is important to you, then you'll need to find ways to get a secure, speedy, and affordable connection as quickly and easily as possible after arriving on your Turkish vacation.

Fortunately for you, as we'll see in this short guide, there are a few ways you can get access to a reliable internet connection in Turkey without much of a hassle or without breaking the bank account. Stay tuned as we go through the five most popular options below.

Dodge sky-high roaming costs, unexpected data charges, or spotty service on your trip to Turkey by using an eSIM from  Airalo  to connect directly to local network carriers like Turkcell, Vodafone, or Turk Telecom.

5 Ways to Get Internet in Turkey

  • 01. Download an eSIM scroll down
  • 02. Buy a local SIM card scroll down
  • 03. Use roaming scroll down
  • 04. Buy (or rent) a wireless pocket WiFi router scroll down
  • 05. Use public or hotel WiFi scroll down
  • 06. FAQ about getting internet in Turkey scroll down

Option 1: eSIM

internet tourist turkey

  • What you need: A smartphone of a newer model (i.e., since 2019 - see a complete list of compatible devices here )
  • Avg. cost per gigabyte: ±$1.50 in Turkey
  • Where to get it: Online in just a few taps ( start here with Airalo )
  • Best for: Pretty much everyone

The first (and, in most cases, the best) option for getting connected in Turkey is to purchase an eSIM before your trip . These SIMs work exactly like regular physical SIM cards, but instead of inserting a plastic microchip, you download SIM software onto your phone or tablet, which your device can then read just like usual.

Using an eSIM in Turkey is simple, affordable, and effective. All you need to do is find a trustworthy eSIM provider online (we particularly like Airalo and Holafly - more on that in a moment), visit their website, choose Turkey as your destination, choose your data bundle, and then pay, download, and follow the instructions to install your eSIM card. The entire process takes just a few minutes, and you can purchase the SIM at home before leaving and then connect to mobile data immediately after touching down in Turkey! Moreover, since your eSIM will effectively be a local Turkish one, you can connect directly to local network carriers like Turkcell, Vodafone, or Turk Telecom and dodge high roaming charges from your home carrier altogether.

When it comes to the cost per gigabyte, buying an eSIM is usually the same price as, or slightly more expensive than, buying a local physical Turkish SIM after arrival. Taking Airalo as an example, a typical data bundle will cost you just from $4.50 to $26 once off depending on how many gigabytes you choose to buy. You can easily top this up via the Airalo app if you start running low. This lets you save time and hassle compared to buying a physical SIM, where you'd usually need to stand in line at the counter to buy or top up your card or package.

On the other hand, if you're looking for an unlimited data bundle, then we recommend Holafly , which generally charges between $1.50 and $6.00 per day for unlimited data in Turkey, depending on how many days you select (the more days, the cheaper the cost per day). Like Airalo, Holafly eSIMs connect through local networks and give you a speedy and secure connection, no matter where you are in Turkey.

You can compare eSIM providers for different types of travelers by taking a look at our YouTube comparison below:

Option 2: Local SIM Card

internet tourist turkey

  • What you need: Any mobile phone; a physical Turkish SIM card.
  • Avg. cost per gigabyte: ±$0.50-$1.50, depending on the package.
  • Where to get it: Kiosks, convenience stores, and cellphone shops in international airports, tourist centres, and commercial districts.
  • Best for: Getting connected if you have a non-eSIM-compatible smartphone.

The next-best option for getting a reliable and affordable internet connection in Turkey is to head to a cellphone shop after arrival and purchase a physical SIM card and an accompanying data bundle.

In Turkey, there are many different kinds of retailers that sell SIM cards, including regular cell phone stores, kiosks, and certain convenience stores. Look out for the local term cep telefonu or for photos of smartphones or local carrier logos on shop windows or storefronts. SIM cards are available at all major international airports in Turkey such as Istanbul, Antalya, Ankara, or Izmir, but in case you miss the chance at the airport, you'll also frequently find SIM cards being sold in city centres, tourist hotspots, malls, or business districts in pretty much all towns and cities around the country.

Buying a local SIM card is generally the cheapest way to connect reliably to the internet as a tourist in Turkey, although it does have some drawbacks. These include the fact that you'll need to visit a shop in person after arriving, which can sometimes take a little while if there are queues. Another potential con (although it's less common these days) is the possibility of being ripped off or scammed altogether. Try to seek out reputable outlets that are affiliated directly with local network carriers to avoid this risk. Buying a SIM card at the airport is almost always completely safe in this respect.

In general, we recommend buying a physical SIM if you don't mind the in-person queuing or if your smartphone isn't an eSIM-compatible model . In pretty much all other cases, we think eSIMs offer a better deal than physical SIMs due to their better convenience and comparable affordability.

Option 3: Roaming

internet tourist turkey

  • What you need: Any smartphone with roaming capabilities.
  • Avg. cost per gigabyte: At least $15.00, but often much higher.
  • Where to get it: Turn on 'Roaming' on your smartphone settings.
  • Best for: Accessing the internet in emergencies when there's no other option available.

In the world of telecoms, 'roaming' refers to connecting your smartphone to the networks of other mobile carriers outside your home networks. You can typically use roaming simply by opening 'Settings' then 'Mobile' or 'Mobile Data' on your Apple device, or 'Connections' then 'Mobile networks' on your Android device. This makes it an easy and convenient option to tap into - but as we'll see, it's usually an expensive one.

Roaming in Turkey works when your home carrier has an agreement with a local Turkish carrier like Turkcell, Vodafone, or Turk Telecom. These agreements normally lead to you coming in short: they can often cost you anywhere between $0.50 and $2.50 per megabyte (that's right, per megabyte , not per gigabyte), which can lead to a staggeringly large bill at the end of the month if you're unlucky enough to browse for long in Turkey with your roaming turned on unwittingly.

On the other hand, it's also worth noting that you might not have the option to roam at all if your home carrier doesn't have agreements with any of the local carriers. It all depends on how well-connected your home carrier is. If you're from the USA and you have a contract with Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile, then roaming will be possible (albeit pricey) in Turkey. On the other hand, if you're with a smaller carrier or from a smaller country, it's possible you won't have this option at all in Turkey.

Although roaming isn't always as expensive on a per-gigabyte basis as what we laid out above, it's almost always far pricier than using a SIM card (whether that be an eSIM or a microchip SIM). What's more, these costs are seldom transparent, and most people only find out how much they've racked up in roaming charges once they receive their bill at the end of the month. It's for this reason that we recommend against roaming in Turkey , or anywhere else for that matter, unless you're in an emergency and need rapid web access or unless you otherwise don't mind the high costs.

Option 4: Portable WiFi Hotspots

A Pocket WiFi SoftBank C01HW on a tabletop.

  • What you need: A smartphone or laptop; a wireless modem.
  • Avg. cost: ±$150.00 to purchase once-off.
  • Where to get it: Online (e.g. Amazon) or mobile and cellphone stores in international airports and tourist centres.
  • Best for: Longer visits to Turkey (i.e., longer than 90 days)

Unlike SIM cards, which connect you to the internet via mobile data, pocket routers or modems (also known as portable WiFi hotspots) connect you to the internet via WiFi . Many people don't know that pocket modems can be a viable option for their travels abroad, but in some cases, they're invaluable! You can find them in many airport cellular stores, and although they're not nearly as ubiquitous as SIM cards, they're quite easy to come upon. You can even order one ahead of your trip, though it's also possible to buy one in-country after you've arrived in Turkey.

Top pocket modem brands to look out for include RoamWiFi, Orbic, and Netgear, but big carriers like T-Mobile and Verizon in the US offer their own products, too. Here's how they generally work:

  • Purchase a portable WiFi router (they normally cost $100 to $400),
  • Charge and turn on the router,
  • Configure the WiFi or router settings, if desired,
  • Connect your device to the new Wi-Fi network.

Pocket modems and portable WiFi hotspot devices generally work by either being completely geared to international use (especially if you buy one at the airport) or combining domestic and international use. For example, RoamWiFi's popular 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot gives you an out-of-the-box 10 GB to use domestically in the US and another 1 GB to use in 160 countries, including Turkey. Other deals offer similar benefits, so we recommend shopping around or just asking at the airport when you arrive.

There are a few advantages to using a wireless pocket modem when visiting Turkey. For one, you can connect multiple devices to the WiFi connection (including laptops, tablets, and smartwatches), and for another, there are no device compatibility issues like there are with SIMs and eSIMs. As long as your device connects to WiFi, it'll work. However, this option is costlier upfront, so we generally only recommend it only if you're planning to spend a lot of time in Turkey (say, longer than 90 days) where using a SIM card would become increasingly costly or if you like the combined domestic and international applicability.

Option 5: Public or Hotel WiFi

A neon hotel sign shining in the night in Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany.

  • What you need: Any device that can connect to WiFi.
  • Avg. cost per gigabyte: $0.00
  • Where to get it: Hotels, public squares, restaurants, cafés, museums, parks, libraries, beaches, universities, etc.
  • Best for: Accessing the web when you're in a pinch (although beware of the security concerns).

The final option for connecting to the internet while in Turkey is to use a free WiFi network. This is normally the cheapest way to get online, but it also carries the most risks of all the methods we looked at in this article.

Free WiFi can give you a very different experience depending on which network you connect to exactly. Generally, connecting to free public WiFi networks from the airport, hotel, or any other sizeable and reputable institution (e.g. a museum or bank) is a safe and secure option for getting online. (However, even in these cases, we recommend against accessing sensitive websites like your work or online banking without a VPN to be on the safe side.)

The problem normally comes with unsecured public networks. Malicious actors, hackers, and other cybercriminals use many techniques to breach your personal information (e.g. email, usernames, passwords, credit card details, private messages, etc.) through free WiFi. One of the most common tricks is setting up free hotspots, often with network names that try to sound legitimate, like "Restaurant free wifi", etc., which they then use to intercept your data. Hackers can also breach other unsecured public networks to intercept data being transmitted between your device and the router, meaning you never fully know if you're in danger of being hacked, even when using a seemingly trustworthy network.

Still, there may well come a time on your Turkish vacation when connecting to a public network is needed. Fortunately, you have options. A good way to avoid most risks when connecting to free WiFi is to use a virtual proxy network (VPN) . These secure tools route your connection through a third-party IP address and hide your personal information from prying eyes when online - even if you're using free public WiFi. VPNs offer advanced features such as top-notch encryption, obfuscated servers, and automatic kill switches. These make it possible for you to browse the internet anonymously in Turkey, or even to connect to a server in your home country to stream your local TV shows. In our opinion, ExpressVPN is the best VPN on the market, no matter whether you're traveling abroad or surfing at home. It comes with the most complete set of features on an easy-to-use app that you can set up with just the tap of a button. If you're budget-conscious but don't want to sacrifice too much on the quality, then we'd recommend Surfshark as a second option, which offers most of the same features as ExpressVPN but for around half the price on the annual plan.

FAQ About Getting Internet in Turkey

Yes, it's possible to surf the internet for free in Turkey as a tourist, but only using public or free WiFi, which comes with some security risks. Instead, we recommend purchasing an eSIM, such as from Airalo  or Holafly , before your trip. This way, for a very affordable price, you can connect to the internet immediately after landing in Turkey and use it on the go during your trip.

The best way to get internet while traveling depends on your needs and preferences, as well as your budget and the length of your trip. However, for ordinary trips abroad, we recommend purchasing and using an eSIM, which lets you connect to the internet right away after arriving overseas and stay online on the go during your trip.

Yes, hotel WiFi is generally safe to use Turkey, but only if the network is secured (meaning if has a password which you receive after checking in as a guest). If you're planning to use an unsecured network, we recommend using a VPN.

No, a hotel or its network administrator won't be able to see your search history if you use a VPN while browsing with their network. However, they will be able to see that you're connected to a VPN.

If you're eligible for roaming, you can typically activate it abroad in exactly the same way as you would at home: by opening 'Settings' then 'Mobile' or 'Mobile Data' on your Apple device, or 'Connections' then 'Mobile networks' on your Android device, and turning on your phone's roaming option.

internet tourist turkey

Are you planning your trip and excited to travel to Turkey soon? Don't waste money on high roaming costs or slow overseas data roaming plans. Buying a local prepaid sim card in Turkey or ordering an e-sim card for Turkey is easy. This is a complete guide for finding the best sim card for your trip to Turkey in 2024.

Find out where to buy a local prepaid sim card, a comparison of the Turkey prepaid sim cards, the best 4G/5G network, up to date prices as per March 2024, the best e-sim cards for Turkey, info about international sim cards, my recommendation and even a vlog about my experiences buying a prepaid sim card in Turkey.

When arriving in a new country I immediately look for the best ways to get connected, it is a vital part of my travel planning.

Since I am on a  journey to travel to every country in the world I get to a lot of different countries. On average per year I use about 40 to 50 prepaid sim cards and e-sim cards to stay connected and that is how Traveltomtom became the ultimate specialist in sim cards for tourists.

In general local prepaid sim cards are ideal for those who use a lot of data, but e-sim cards are the easiest way to get connected in 2024 and when it comes to Turkey then e-sim cards are also MUCH CHEAPER than local prepaid sim cards.

Providing travelers with valuable travel tips is a passion and that resulted in writing already more than 200 sim card guides from all over the world. On my travel blog you can find sim card guides from: USA , Europe , Germany , United Kingdom ,  Asia ,  Mexico , Canada ,  Brazil , Colombia , Jordan , South Africa , Dubai , Qatar ,  Thailand , Bangkok ,  Indonesia , Bali , Malaysia ,  Kenya , Egypt , Hong Kong , China and many more.

Why buying a sim card for Turkey

All hotels and most restaurants and bars in Turkey have pretty good and reliable WiFi, so why getting a sim card for Turkey? A very easy question to answer! It simply makes traveling in Turkey so much easier. Like in general, having a data connection on your phone makes life much more convenient. Think about ordering a taxi from an app, or getting directions from Google Maps, finding nearby restaurants with good reviews or what about emergencies?

Getting a local sim card in Turkey is easy, fast and relatively cheap compared to Western countries. A Turkey sim card guarantees you a much more relaxing trip to Turkey.

Also don't rely on WiFi, because there is no guarantee! If be the signal in your hotel room is weak or the WiFi is so slow it hardly works. On top of that be aware that public WiFi's are UNSECURED networks, using a VPN is therefore recommended.

Not a fan of swapping sim cards and changing phone numbers? Then you should look into getting a portable WiFi device. How they work? Personally I am not a fan, but I will give you my HONEST opinion and tell you everything about it in my article: how to get WiFi on the road !

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends a Turkcell tourist sim card for traveling in Turkey. They have the strongest 4G/5G network and fastest data speed and for $27 USD you get a tourist sim card with 20 GB data and 200 calling minutes.

If you just need a little bit of internet on your phone when traveling to Turkey then look into buying an e-sim card as 1 GB data already starts from $4.5 USD. But it also is a very convenient way to get a lot of data on your phone in just 2 minutes. Because an e-sim card for Turkey with 20 GB data also only costs $26 USD.

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Turkey via either Airalo , SimOptions or Nomad .

Where to buy a tourist sim card for Turkey

where to buy prepaid sim card turkey

There are three mobile internet providers in Turkey and when you look at the prices for data plans in Turkey they are not as cheap as you may expect. In a country where you can have a sandwich, a tea and a bottle of water for less than $3 USD, you would expect competitive prices for perpaid sim cards.

Unfortunately buying a Turkey sim card for tourists is relatively expensive compared it to its neighboring countries: Greece , Bulgaria , Georgia . This is because foreigners can only buy a tourist sim card. If you want a prepaid sim card in Turkey with a foreign passport as a non-resident you can only buy a tourist sim card.

Tourist sim cards have different prices and packages as prepaid sim cards for locals.

International Airports on arrival

The most convenient place to buy a Turkey prepaid sim card is of course on arrival at any of the international airports. Most people will start their trip to Turkey in either IST Airport or SAW Airport in Istanbul. For both airports I wrote a specific guide for buying a Turkey prepaid sim card on arrival:

  • Buying a sim card at Istanbul Airport IST in 2024
  • Buying a sim card at Istanbul Airport SAW in 2024
  • Buying a sim card at Izmir Airport in 2024

Luckily all the other international airports like Antalya, Ankara, Bodrum, Trabzon and Kayseri all have sim card stores from the main mobile internet providers in the arrival hall. So buying a tourist sim card in Turkey is easy, it is just really expensive.

Expect tourist prices for tourist sim cards on arrival at the international airports in Turkey. The cheaper sim card deals for Turkey you find in the city center in official phone stores of the mobile internet providers. Or even better... on the internet.

Phone stores in city center

stay connected when traveling to turkey

If you want the best prepaid sim card deals and data plans then you have to buy your Turkey sim card away from the airport. Go where the locals go and get local prices. However, even here tourists pay a higher price for their prepaid sim card. There are plenty official retail stores around the city from one of the mobile internet operators. Locate them simply though Google Maps. Walk in with your passport and you can buy a sim card for tourists without a problem.

Traveltomtom recommends an official retail store of one of the mobile internet providers over a random phone store. At these stores they also sell prepaid sim cards for Turkey but at different prices. Always put your new registered sim card in your phone and wait till everything is working before you walk out of the store.

As I already showed you above there are multiple ways to stay connected when traveling to Turkey and one of them is ordering a sim card for Turkey on the internet.

If you buy an international sim card for Turkey  a physical prepaid sim card will be delivered to your home address before your trip and if you order an e-sim card for Turkey you arrange everything online within just a couple minutes.

If you travel to Turkey on a budget then sightseeing in Istanbul can be a lot cheaper than buying a sim cards for tourists. Check here for a free walking tour of Fener Balat and marvel at this hip up and coming neighborhood with its colorful houses.

Done with the standard things to do in Istanbul? Check this list of hidden gems in Istanbul and go off the beaten path. Other great recommendations and day trip in and around Istanbul are: Turkey's biggest mosque , Uskudar , Kadikoy , all in the Asian part of the city.

Mobile internet providers in Turkey

There are three different mobile internet providers in Turkey: Vodafone, Turkcell and Turk Telekom. They have stores all over Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir , Bodrum, Bursa , Antalya, Trabzon, Kayseri and all the other popular tourist destinations in Turkey. You can also find them on most international and domestic airports. Finding a shop to buy a Turkey prepaid sim card is not that hard.

I recommend tourists to visit one of the official internet provider stores of either Vodafone, Turk Telekom or Turkcell. These are the ones you can trust, they should have the best deals and they activate your new Turkey sim card on the spot for you. Others phone shops are just resellers, if something goes wrong they send you to the official stores.

Registration process

As a tourist or a non-resident you can only buy a visitor line sim card for tourists in Turkey. Meaning your sim card will be registered on your passport number and name. So always bring your passport when buying a sim card in Turkey. In the store they will take a copy of your passport.

As of 2024 a tourist can use a prepaid sim card and their imported mobile phone for a maximum of 3 months before it will be blocked. After 90 days you will have to pay an import tax based on the value of your phone.

If this is somehow inconvenient to you or you are looking for a way around it then buy an international sim card for Turkey  or even easier: order an e-sim card for Turkey .

Prices Turkey sim cards in 2024

All the below information and prices are updated as per March 2024. The Turkish Lira fluctuates a lot and therefore most phone stores display their Turkey tourist sim cards in USD. As of March 2024: $1 USD = 32 TL and 100 TL = $3.12 USD.

Vodafone Turkey prepaid sim card for tourists

vodafone tourist sim card for turkey 2024

On my last visit in Turkey in March 2024 I checked out several Vodafone Turkey stores in Istanbul and in Izmir and all of them sell the exact same prepaid sim card for tourists:

  • 20 GB data + 750 minutes + 1,000 sms =  900 TL - $30 USD

This Vodafone prepaid sim card is valid for 28 days and only for use in Turkey, not in the rest of the EU!

This Vodafone Turkey tourist sim card is also advertised on the  Vodafone Turkey  and it literally says: prices may vary from store to store. Yes, that is very true. Some official Vodafone stores in Istanbul tried charging me $45 USD for the same tourist sim card.

Big plus and completely new is that Vodafone Turkey sells the same prepaid sim card plan as above in some stores also as an e-sim card. However, the same plan as an e-sim card costs 850 TL which is $28 USD.

The Turkey e-sim card plans you can buy on the internet are much cheaper!

Turk Telekom prepaid sim card

turk telekom tourist sim card for turkey 2024

They claim to be cheapest prepaid sim card in Turkey and well according to the above prices that would be true. On the Turk Telekom website you can find complete different prices, but the above price is the real one. Taken in a Turk Telekom store in March 2024 and double checked in many other stores in Istanbul, as well as in Izmir on my recent trip to Turkey.

  • 40 GB data + 750 minutes + 750 sms for 28 days = 650 TL - $22 USD

A Turk Telekom prepaid sim card for tourists is only valid in Turkey. Turk Telekom does NOT offer e-sim cards for tourists. For more info check the Turk Telekom  website.

Turkcell prepaid sim card

turkcell turkey prepaid sim card for tourists 2024

Don't be fooled by the above price of 169 TL for the following prepaid sim card plan for tourists:

  • 20 GB data + 200 minutes + Free WhatsApp valid for 1 month = 650 TL - $22 USD

Turkcell adapted their prices for 2024 and took off their prices from their website because of the inflation of the Turkish Lira, just like Vodafone. They still sell the exact same tourist sim card but they raised the price to 650 TL which is $22 USD.

Turkcell does NOT offer e-sim cards for tourists in their stores in Turkey. For more info about this Turkey prepaid sim card check out the Turkcell website .

Best 4G/5G network in Turkey in 2024

Turkey is a huge country and all those millions of Turkish people love mobile internet. For them it is much cheaper to stay connected than for tourists. Therefore the Turkey tourist sim card business is booming and prices are exceptional high.

But apart from the prices for tourist sim cards let's also dive into the network coverage. Traveltomtom compared the 4G/5G mobile data network coverage maps for Turkey of Vodafone, Turkcell and Turk Telekom to find out which provider has the best mobile data network in Turkey in 2024.

Is there 5G in Turkey?

No, there is still no 5G in Turkey as of March 2024. Despite millions of mobile internet users there is only 5G in central areas in Istanbul. The first 5G towers are recently constructed in Istanbul city center and at the IST Airport, but that is about it.

If you go off the beaten path in Turkey, 4G/LTE coverage can become rare as well. Turkey is a huge country. However, as you can see from the below Turkey 4G/5G mobile internet coverage maps most of the  best places to visit in Turkey are covered with a 4G/LTE signal.

Turk Telekom 4G/5G network coverage map

turk telekom 4g 5g network coverage map turkey 2024

Vodafone 4G/5G network coverage map

vodafone 4g 5g network coverage map turkey 2024

Turkcell 4G/5G network coverage map

turkcell 4g 5g network coverage map turkey 2024

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Turkey in 2024.

Based on the 4G/5G network coverage maps for 2024 Turkcell has the best 4G/5G mobile data network in Turkey in 2024. If you travel to the more remote areas in Turkey then Turkcell is the best Turkey sim card for you. You can also expect the fastest data speed in Turkey from Turkcell.

Turk Telecom and Vodafone have a slightly weaker network, but if you only stay in one of the famous Turkey tourist destinations then Turk Telecom and Vodafone will be just as good.

Mobile internet data speed in Turkey

With a respective 63th place on the world data speed ranking in 2023, on average one can expect a download speed of 69 Mbps according to Speed Test Pro, published on Wikipedia.

Best prepaid sim card for Turkey in 2024

My conclusion after my comparison of the Turkey prepaid sim cards for tourists is that prices fluctuate a lot these days and that is all due to the massive inflation of the Turkish Lira. The prepaid sim card plans you find online on the websites of the mobile internet operators are completely outdated and some won't even show you prices anymore.

For me it was a shocking surprise when I got to the official retail stores in Istanbul and Izmir and saw the prices for tourist sim cards. When I asked the staff about the tourist sim card plans that are advertised online they said they were not able to offer them anymore for the price shown. Basically I felt like they made their own prices and they indeed differ per sim card store.

It seems like Turkey sim card prices for tourists are going up with the years and at the same time the prices for Turkey e-sim cards are going down a lot. If you only need a little bit of internet to navigate, check email and use WhatApp then Traveltomtom definitely recommends an e-sim card over a local prepaid sim card.

For just $4.5 USD you already get 1 GB data for traveling in Turkey. Turkey tourist prepaid sim cards start from $25 USD!

Even if you are a heavy data user then an e-sim card for Turkey is cheaper than a local prepaid tourist sim card. An e-sim card for Turkey with 20 GB data costs $26 USD. Keep in mind that e-sim cards for Turkey are data-only and phone calls are NOT supported.

History of Internet Access in Turkey

Introduction.

In recent years, internet access has become an essential part of our daily lives, connecting us to a vast world of information and opportunities. In Turkey, the journey of internet access began in the early 1990s, marking a significant milestone in the country’s technological advancement.

Early years of internet in Turkey

During the early years of internet access in Turkey, the service was primarily limited to academic institutions and government organizations. The Turkish Academic Network, known as ULAKNET, played a crucial role in establishing the foundation for internet connectivity in the country. It connected universities and research centers, allowing for the exchange of data and research collaboration.

Growth and current status of internet access

Over the years, internet access in Turkey has experienced tremendous growth and development. Today, Turkey is one of the largest internet markets in Europe, with an estimated 80 million internet users. The country has witnessed a steady increase in internet penetration, largely driven by advancements in technology, the proliferation of smartphones, and the growing demand for online services.

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Turkey

Major isps in turkey.

There are several major internet service providers (ISPs) operating in Turkey, offering a wide range of internet services. Some of the prominent ISPs in the country include Turk Telekom, Superonline, Turkcell Superonline, and Vodafone. These ISPs compete in providing reliable and fast internet connections to residential and business users across the country.

Types of internet connections offered by ISPs

ISPs in Turkey offer various types of internet connections to cater to different user needs. These connections include Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), fiber-optic, cable, and mobile broadband. Each type has its advantages and limitations, with fiber-optic connections known for their high speed and reliability.

Prices and packages

The pricing and package options for internet services in Turkey vary among ISPs and depend on factors such as connection type, speed, and data allowance. Generally, there are different tiers available to accommodate the diverse needs of users, ranging from basic plans suitable for light internet usage to high-speed plans for heavy data consumption.

Internet Regulations in Turkey

Government control and censorship.

Turkey has faced scrutiny for its government’s control and censorship of the internet. The government has implemented various measures to regulate online content and monitor internet activity. This has raised concerns about freedom of expression and access to unbiased information.

Blocking of websites and social media platforms

In recent years, Turkey has blocked access to numerous websites and social media platforms, often citing reasons related to national security or the protection of public order. Popular platforms such as YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook have all faced temporary or permanent blocks, leading to widespread criticism and debates about internet freedom and censorship.

Increasing surveillance and privacy concerns

There is growing concern about increasing surveillance and privacy issues in Turkey. The government’s expanded surveillance capabilities and the collection of personal data have caused apprehension among internet users. The lack of stringent data protection laws and transparency regarding government surveillance practices further exacerbates these concerns.

Internet Speed and Quality

Average internet speed in turkey.

Turkey’s average internet speed has shown improvement over the years, although it still lags behind some other European countries. According to recent data, the average download speed in Turkey is around 63 Mbps, with variations among different regions. However, there is an ongoing effort to enhance internet infrastructure and increase internet speed across the country.

Factors affecting internet quality

Several factors can impact internet quality in Turkey. The distance from the exchange point, the quality of the infrastructure, and the type of internet connection all play a role in determining the overall speed and reliability of the service. Additionally, network congestion during peak usage times can also affect internet quality and speed.

Improvements in recent years

Despite the existing challenges, there have been significant improvements in internet speed and quality in Turkey. The government and ISPs have invested in upgrading infrastructure, deploying fiber-optic networks, and adopting advanced technologies. These efforts have resulted in faster internet connections and improved user experience for many individuals and businesses.

Internet Access in Rural Areas

Challenges in providing internet access to rural areas.

Expanding internet access to rural areas presents unique challenges. The sparse population density, geographical barriers, and cost of infrastructure deployment make it more challenging to provide reliable and affordable internet connectivity in these areas. The lack of connectivity hinders rural communities from accessing educational resources, economic opportunities, and essential government services.

Initiatives and projects for expanding connectivity

To bridge the digital divide between urban and rural areas, Turkey has implemented various initiatives and projects. The government, in collaboration with ISPs and private organizations, has worked towards extending internet coverage to underserved regions. These initiatives include the construction of additional infrastructure, the establishment of community internet centers, and the provision of financial incentives to ISPs for expanding their networks to rural areas.

Disparities between urban and rural areas

Although efforts have been made to improve internet access in rural areas, there is still a notable disparity between urban and rural areas in terms of internet connectivity. Urban areas benefit from better infrastructure, higher internet speeds, and a wider range of service providers. Addressing these disparities remains a priority to ensure equal access to opportunities for all Turkish citizens.

Internet Usage and Penetration in Turkey

Number of internet users in turkey.

Turkey has experienced significant growth in internet penetration over the years. As of 2021, there are approximately 80 million internet users in the country, representing a substantial portion of the population. This widespread adoption of the internet has transformed various aspects of Turkish society, including communication, education, commerce, and entertainment.

Demographics of internet users

Internet usage in Turkey is prominent among younger demographics, with a large number of young adults and teenagers actively engaging in online activities. However, the internet is increasingly becoming accessible to people of all age groups and backgrounds, as connectivity becomes more affordable and technology more user-friendly.

Popular online activities in Turkey

Internet users in Turkey engage in a wide range of online activities. Social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, are extremely popular and widely used for socializing, sharing content, and engaging in discussions. Online shopping, accessing news and entertainment, and educational pursuits are also common activities among internet users in Turkey.

Mobile Internet in Turkey

Growth of mobile internet usage.

Mobile internet usage has witnessed exponential growth in Turkey, driven by the widespread adoption of smartphones and the convenience they offer. With mobile data plans becoming more affordable and readily available, a significant portion of internet users in Turkey now primarily access the internet through their mobile devices.

Availability and coverage of mobile networks

Mobile network coverage in Turkey is extensive, with major cities and populated areas benefiting from reliable and fast mobile internet connections. The country’s major mobile network providers, such as Turkcell, Vodafone, and Turk Telekom, have expanded their coverage nationwide, ensuring that a majority of the population has access to mobile internet services.

Mobile data plans and costs

Mobile data plans in Turkey come in a variety of options, catering to different user needs. These plans offer varying data allowances, speeds, and pricing. Users can choose from prepaid or postpaid plans, depending on their usage habits and preferences. The competitive nature of the market has resulted in affordable data packages, enabling more individuals to enjoy the benefits of mobile internet access.

Public Wi-Fi and Internet Cafes

Availability and accessibility of public wi-fi.

Public Wi-Fi is readily available in major cities, tourist areas, and commercial establishments throughout Turkey. Airports, cafes, restaurants, hotels, and shopping malls often provide free Wi-Fi access to enhance customer experiences. The availability of public Wi-Fi enables people to stay connected while on the go and access the internet without utilizing their mobile data.

Use of internet cafes in Turkey

Internet cafes, locally known as “internet kafes,” were popular in Turkey before the widespread adoption of personal computers and smartphones. While their popularity has diminished to some extent, internet cafes still exist and serve as meeting places for gamers, individuals without personal internet access, or those seeking a dedicated workspace.

Security concerns with public Wi-Fi

While public Wi-Fi offers convenience, there are security risks associated with connecting to these networks. Users should exercise caution when accessing sensitive information or engaging in online transactions while connected to public Wi-Fi. Utilizing Virtual Private Network (VPN) services and ensuring the use of secure websites (HTTPS) can help protect privacy and prevent unauthorized access.

Internet Freedom and Online Expression

Restrictions on online content and expression.

Turkey has experienced restrictions on online content and limitations on freedom of expression. The government’s legal framework and various legislation have allowed for internet censorship, especially concerning political and social topics. This has led to concerns about the stifling of dissent, censorship of news outlets, and limitations on freedom of speech.

Instances of internet censorship and surveillance

Turkey has been known to block access to websites, social media platforms, and online content that are deemed to be in violation of laws or regulations . Journalism, political activism, and criticism of the government are often targets of censorship. Additionally, there have been cases of online surveillance, with allegations of state authorities monitoring and collecting internet users’ data.

Effects on freedom of speech and press

The restrictions on online content and internet surveillance in Turkey have had a notable impact on freedom of speech and the press. Journalists, activists, and individuals expressing dissenting opinions face risks of prosecution or intimidation. These limitations on freedom of expression raise concerns about democratic values, access to information, and the ability to express diverse viewpoints freely.

Future of Internet Access in Turkey

Plans for improving internet infrastructure.

Turkey has ambitious plans for improving its internet infrastructure and expanding connectivity. The government aims to increase broadband penetration, upgrade existing infrastructure, and build new networks to provide faster and more reliable internet access across the country. These plans include investments in fiber-optic networks, satellite technology, and advanced wireless technologies.

Government initiatives for digital transformation

The Turkish government has launched several initiatives to promote digital transformation and stimulate the growth of the digital economy. These initiatives include the provision of e-government services, support for startups and innovation, and promoting digital literacy and skills development. The government recognizes the importance of a strong digital infrastructure to drive economic growth and improve citizens’ quality of life.

Challenges and potential for growth

Despite the progress made, there are still challenges to overcome for internet access in Turkey. Addressing the urban-rural divide, improving internet speed and quality in underserved areas, ensuring greater internet affordability, and protecting online freedom remain significant challenges. However, with continued government support, collaboration between stakeholders, and advancements in technology, there is tremendous potential for growth and further expansion of internet access in Turkey.

Options for Mobile Internet Access in Turkey

For most people, a major concern when they come to Turkey is how to stay connected to the Internet. We are addicted to it and most of our daily lives require it, whether this is to chat with friends on Facebook, upload photos online, use maps, or gain access to mobile apps.

Many people activate roaming on their mobiles, but this can be costly. Just last month, a woman was handed a £12,500 bill by her supplier! She was using the hotels Wi-Fi while in Turkey but this cut-out and her foreign mobile Internet provider automatically took over.

This month, I was asked to review the 4G devices supplied by Rent and Connect Turkey. They are a Wi-Fi provider that aims to keep visitors to the country connected 24/7 at low costs.I will talk more about them later but thought this was a good opportunity to discuss Internet options that are available to travelers and holiday makers in Turkey.

How To Get Mobile Internet in Turkey

Mobile Internet Access

Buy a Sim Card

The most traditional way of avoiding roaming charges is to get a prepaid Turkish simcard. In Turkey, there are 3 cellular providers. Turkcell , Vodafone and Avea . Their rates are usually similar and plans include data access, voice calls and SMS.

Copies of your passport are needed to purchase the cards but if you plan to stay in the country longer than a month, you also need to register your foreign phone and pay tax.

Wi-Fi Hot Spots

Mobile access Turkey

Almost every restaurant, bar and hotel in Turkey has Wi-Fi connection that is offered free to customers. Some cafes use a Wi-Fi hotspot provider, in which case you will need to register to their system.

The only potential disappointment is that stable and high-speed Internet can be ad-hoc because the connection can be used by many people, at the same time.

You are also limited to the location of the Wi-Fi, so if you are walking about town, in a remote village location or on a boat trip, you need another solution, which is why I liked the mobile Wi-Fi service from Rent and Connect.

Rent a Mobile Hotspot (Mi-Fi, Pocket Wi-Fi) or Digital Guide

Rent ‘n Connect is an Istanbul based company. Their company slogan is “Rent ‘n Connect is your best friend in Turkey.” They have two different devices available for rent

  • Wi-Fi To Go

Wi-Fi Internet Turkey

Connecting for the first time was simple and easy. I switched the device on and looked for “RentNConnect” in the Wi-Fi network list on my mobile. I entered the password that came with the device and then was good to go.

I often turn my Internet off because it drains the battery but no matter where I was, everytime I switched it back on, Internet connection came back within seconds and with Rent ‘n Connects mobile hotspot, you can use up to 10 devices.

So basically, your laptop, tablet, smartphone, and kindle can connect to the Internet at the same time. This is great if you are traveling with family and friends, because one 4G device can be used by everyone.

From their reviews , previous customers of Rent ‘n Connect said the device’s signal and speed was even more stable than the Internet provided in their hotels and I agree with them.

  • Digital Guide w/ Unlimited Internet

Internet Tablet

If you are in Istanbul, you can also use the “Digital Guide” app that intends to make you feel like a “local.” You do not need to seek information on where to eat and popular attractions, because all information is within the guide.

So if you do not want to use your own devices in Turkey, or even need a second one to keep the kids entertained, this choice is great.

Rent n Connect Customer Service: I was particularly impressed by the customer service. They deliver the device to your hotel on your arrival day. Upon your departure, pop the devices into the enclosed cargo bags, seal them and leave them at reception.

Rent n Connect then send the cargo company to pick them up. They also connected me via Twitter during my rental period to check that everything was ok and I was connected.

Pricing: Both devices are €5,99 each, per day for an unlimited data plan. Rent ‘n Connect offer 30% discount for booking more than a week and they often run promotions and more discount deals via their Facebook and Twitter pages.

How to Get Internet, Pocket WiFi Rentals in Istanbul Turkey

How to Get Internet, Pocket WiFi Rentals in Istanbul Turkey

Get to know where you can find free WiFi in Istanbul, the best connection hotspots or when renting a cheap, portable 4G pocket WiFi device. There are many ways to go online during your stay in Turkey, and we detail all the best options for connecting to the internet while traveling below.

The catch-22 with shared WiFi is that it be slow depending on the number of users and comes with an internet security risk. You can, however, combine free WiFi with a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to ensure you have complete privacy while browsing.

The use of a VPN is highly recommended even if you only plan on doing anything that requires a password. If you plan on doing any type of online banking or anything highly sensitive data, it’s a must-have.

Free hotspots are available at accommodation types in Istanbul other than luxury hotels who generally charge extra for it. Browse recent hotel reviews to get a better idea of what their WiFi is like.

Vacation Rental

In general, you with an AirBNB type vacation rental, you and your guests will be the only ones who access the internet password.

Free Hotspots

While out touring the city, you might also need internet, but no matter where you go in Istanbul, there’s always somewhere close by that will offer Free WiFi.

Again, we highly recommend you use Virtual Private Network (VPN ) when access any free WiFi hotspot to ensure your passwords and data are secure.

Istanbul City WiFi

The City of Istanbul offers Free WiFi hotspots throughout most city parks and heavily visited tourist areas.

The IBBWiFi hotspots are located in major squares in Istanbul , as well as popular tourist districts/neighborhoods such as Sultanahmet, Taksim, Eminonu and Besiktas. You can also find IBBWiFi in big city parks as well as the Intercity Bus Terminals and on public buses & metros.

These free city WiFi connections are heavily used and can be quite slow as high-season tourism arrives. On top of that, you’ll only get 1 GB of free Internet per day with a maximum of 2 Mbps speed.

IBBWiFi Registration : Before you can use any IBBWiFi hotspot, you’ll first need to register to get a free account. You can do this at the airport kiosk using your passport. If want to use the SMS confirmation, it requires that you already have a Turkey phone number.

Cafes and Restaurants

While you’ll most likely need to purchase something small like a coffee or Turkish delight, most cafes and restaurants will allow you to access their WiFi.

In general, these connections won’t be open, so you’ll have to ask for the password. Again security is an issue, so be sure to use a VPN.

Pre-paid SIM Cards

A pre-paid SIM card with a good data plan will not only allow you to get WiFi anywhere in Istanbul but also allow you to send and receive calls, as well as text messages.

You can also create a mobile hotspot on your phone so you connect to your laptop or multiple devices while on the go or in your hotel room.

Below you’ll find the best method to get WiFi in Istanbul along with other common methods to access the internet and social media.

GSM Providers

Turkey has three GSM providers (Turkcell, Vodafone, and Turk Telekom) that offer SIM cards with data plans. Each provider offers varying amounts of data and pricing, but all require a valid passport for purchase.

The best deal, when it’s available is from Turkcell. For just 149 TL, you can get a 30 day SIM card with 20GB internet, 200 minutes in calls plus unlimited messaging via WhatsApp and BiP.

Do note that this deal is not always active at all retailers even though it’s still heavily advertised online.

Visit Turkcell Website

If you’re looking for a no-fuss option, we recommend the Turistcell from the Istanbul Welcome Card, which also comes with Free hotel delivery or airport pickup.

For 28 € you’ll get 7 days access with a 15 GB of 4G Internet, 1,000 minutes of International calls and 100 SMS for texting.

Visit the Turistcell SIM Page

SIM Purchase

Most tourists purchase their SIM cards from a mobile retailer at the New Istanbul Airport , but you can find satellite stores for each provider throughout Istanbul. Do note that you will need an unlocked phone to connect to the network.

4G Pocket Internet

For those who want easy access across multiple devices, renting a portable mobile internet hotspot is ideal. There are numerous Pocket WiFi providers in Istanbul, such as RentNConnect , AllDayWiFi or StayInWifi .

This small device hotspot allows you to connect up to 10 devices, such as laptops, iPad and phones. The WiFi device has a rechargeable battery so you can take it with you and connect within a 15-meter radius of the device carrier.

Istanbul Tourist Pass

If you’re only going to stay 3-7 days, however, we recommend you grab an Istanbul Tourist Pass which includes 3 free days of RentNConnect pocket WiFi (a 27 € value).

This option is available with any of the 3, 5 or 7-day tourist passes while extending your rental costs an extra 6€ per day. It further comes with free hotel delivery or airport pickup.

How to access the Internet in Turkey

How to access the Internet in Turkey

Travelers to Turkey always wonder if it is easy to access the Internet while they are in Turkey  wherever whatever the purpose, everyone wants to be able to access the Internet easily

Internet access while vacationing in Turkey

In the event that you are planning a temporary visit to Turkey or are planning to travel and explore, the good news is that the Internet in Turkey is cheap and easy to access. Many people complain that their mobile service provider charges high fees for international roaming, but here in Turkey, you can get it for free. Most bars and restaurants offer the wifi password to customers who buy drinks or items from their menu.

An alternative, especially if you want temporary Wi-Fi access in your home, is to rent a portable hotspot. The operators charge the hotspot to the address you chose, and up to ten devices can connect to an unlimited wireless network at any time.

When your vacation ends, put it back on your prepaid package and inform the service provider who will send the shipping company to pick it up. Rental agents charge an average of six euros per day, but they guarantee several incentives such as a 30% discount if you book seven or more days.

Note: If you plan to stay in Turkey for more than 120 days, you will need to register your mobile phone with a Turkish mobile service provider, which gives you an abundance of prices.

Internet service providers in Turkey Turkey has two main home internet providers, as well as nearly 30 secondary service providers. The main problem with smaller local service providers is that if you use the internet to access foreign TV packages, buffering might be a constant problem. Likewise, a VPN can also slow down service.

Other than that, they offer excellent packages, some of which will be beneficial to expats who come and go because you can freeze your internet subscription for the months when you are not in the country.

Turk Telekom / TTNET

The most famous internet service provider in Turkey is TTNET which is a branch of the Turkish Telecom Company, the largest telecom company in Turkey. They also have the longest fiber-optic network that transmits data at high speed, and also has the advantage that it is unlikely to stop if there is a power outage, as sometimes happens in Turkey.

Its fiber optic internet rates are higher than conventional DSL internet, but TTNET also sells premium packages at affordable prices in case you sign a two-year contract. One example of this is the unlimited internet and Tivibu premium TV package including English movies and documentary channels for only 50 TL per month. The Turkish telecom company is the only provider of landline phones that will need to register online. In order to be able to obtain an existing landline that has been changed to your name, you must go to the local Turkish Telecommunications Company office in your area with a copy of the title deed (Tapu), passport and residence permit. They offer excellent savings if a two-year contract is signed.

The Turkish version of their website contains a lot of information that unfortunately will disappear when the language is switched to English, so we recommend that you use an online translator.

Super online from Turkcell

It is the second largest internet provider in Turkey from Turkcell, which in turn is the most popular mobile phone service provider in the country. Turkcell offers some excellent packages but, to date, it has not been able to take market share from the Turkish telecom company. The company also sells fiber optic internet lines and DSL services. Unfortunately there is no English language version of their website.

Speed of internet connection in Turkey

According to a report by the UK Independent, Turkey has a lower internet speed than the UK internet. A report issued by the Internet Society ranked Turkey 59th in the world in terms of internet speed, but it is worth to be optimistic because an increasing number of Turks are subscribing to the Internet every day, so providers are competing to provide the best service at the lowest possible price. There are also plans to expand the coverage of the optical fiber network, and 4.5G mobile service is booming after its introduction in 2016

Leave your number and we will call you back soon.

The alternatives to having internet in Turkey differ a lot, so pay close attention to the following options. It’s your choice!

eSIM for Turkey from Holafly (Buy online)

The eSIM, although a relatively new option, has become the best alternative for travelers because it can be purchased easily through an online store such as Holafly, which offers a Turkish eSIM alternative with unlimited data, and connects directly to the Türk Telekom network, the largest and fastest coverage in the country.

This option actually has multiple benefits, as we will see below, but we have to mention that it only applies to cellphones compatible with eSIM technology. Here is the list of compatible cellphones for you to take a look at.

Advantages of Holafly eSIM

  • You can continue using your usual WhatsApp number.
  • Calls through VOIP app.
  • Receive the eSIM via email through a QR Code.
  • Scan QR and connect instantly.
  • Easy to set up.
  • No subscriptions or contracts.
  • 24/7 customer service.
  • Unlimited data with all their data plans and 500 MB per day to use with hotspot.
  • Data packages for more than 170 tourist destinations, including one of the best eSIM for Spain travel and more

Disadvantages of the Holafly eSIM

  • Not compatible with all smartphones.
  • Cannot make or receive analog calls.
  • Sending and receiving SMS is not possible.
  • You cannot share your data.

Holafly eSIM rates for Turkey

Holafly has improved the way they offer data packages to users. From now on, the Turkey eSIM from Holafly will allow travelers to choose the exact number of days they will stay in the country.

This new feature allows users to get eSIMs from 1 to 90 days . Getting a data package when visiting Turkey is no longer required, making it easier to prepare a budget for the trip.

As for prices, these will vary from $6 to $129 depending on how many days the trip will last!

Prepaid SIM cards

SIM cards are the second most popular option for travelers because they are an easy alternative available at international airports and official stores. It is also cheap compared to other options, such as international roaming or pocket WiFi.

In this case, we recommend you buy the SIM card with the following operators:

Vodafone Turkey: This operator is one of the most recognized in the UK and they offer SIM cards that includes the “Welcome to Turkey” plan with calls, SMS and data available for 28 days.

Turkey SIM Card: It offers you prepaid SIM cards with small, medium and large plans, with GB variety, but little offer for calls and SMS.

To keep in mind:

In any case, when buying SIM cards for your trip, you should keep in mind the currency exchange rate and language of the country you are visiting. This is certainly an aspect to consider in case you have concerns about the package you are subscribing to or if you need to solve any problem in your cellphones settings.

Pocket WiFi in Turkey (Buy or Rent)

Pocket WiFi is a portable device that fits in your pocket and allows you to connect to the internet wherever you go. It is a recommended option for group travel because it allows you to connect several devices at the same time , depending on their capacity.

The point is that it is a device that must be taken care of so that it will not be damaged or maybe even lost during your trip because if this happens, you will have to pay for the replacement. This fee is for the provider that rented the pocket WiFi from.

Among other things, it is one of the most expensive options because, in addition to the device, you must pay for a data plan with a SIM card to connect to the internet. In addition, you have to pay shipping fees and extras fees in case of replacement.

After these recommendations, we leave you some popular providers known by travelers:

Travel WiFi: With a battery life of 12 to 13 hours, you can connect up to 5 devices, with a private WiFi network range, within a radius of 50 m without interference.

MyWebspot: For 15 days, they offer you a rate of $162.45 USD, including the WiFi device, travel box + instructions for use. The power bank, charger, adapter, and insurance are extra fees.

Free WiFi in Turkey

This service is one of the most sought-after option by tourists but not the most recommended . If you are going to post a photo or send a message to a friend, it will be useful. But if you’ll transfer money, or pay a bill, you better look for a safer network. It does not offer security and privacy because countless users can connect to this network.

Turkish Airlines private network: It connects you to a network at a reliable speed thanks to TTNet coverage, which is only exclusive for Business Class, Miles and Smiles Elite, and Elite Plus customers. If you’re not under any of these customer categories, the internet will cost you 9.99 dollars per hour.

Hotels: If you are staying in the capital, Istanbul, you can check this search web for hotels in Turkey to see if they have free WiFi service, but always keep in mind that the connection you will have is not entirely secure and private.

internet tourist turkey

International roaming for Turkey

Roaming is the service that your local cellular operator can offer you to have an internet connection, make calls, or send messages in another country. In some cases, this service is activated as soon as you arrive at your destination, and the rates for each service will be included in your next bill. In addition, you can continue to use your regular number.

However, don’t trust this service fully, it is the most expensive option, and you may get an ugly surprise when you have to pay the extra charges. So check the terms and conditions offered by your operator before using this service.

Advantages of international roaming:

  • Easy to activate: Some cell phones activate it’s roaming service for you automatically, while others only expect you to make a call or send an SMS. This works for carriers that offer a USA eSIM prepaid as well as for carriers from Europe and other destinations.
  • Promotions: Depending on the country you travel to, you can access good rates.

Disadvantages of international roaming:

  • They are expensive: Their rates are high, higher than any other option, so we do not recommend it whether you are going to make long trips or plan to carry out tasks on your cellphone that consume a lot of data.
  • They have restrictions: Some operators do not allow you to consume more data while on roaming than your regular consumption back home. That is, if you are traveling for a long time or consume a lot of data at some point, your service will be cut off. This happens if you exceed the consumption limit you have in Spain or your home country.

One of the best ways to avoid roaming is to use data plans with coverage in multiple destinations. Holafly offers some of the best eSIM plans for tourism within Asia .

Roaming rates in Turkey according to your country

As you can see, you must check the rates, plans, and coverage offered by your operator to avoid surprise consumption and, among other things, to compare the offer with other operators because you may be getting the highest rate without realizing it.

Likewise, if you travel back to any of these, the eSIM UK and other destinations can be an excellent alternative to having internet.

Comparison of the alternatives to having Internet in Turkey

All right, the time has come to choose the best option. For this, we leave you a summary with the pros and cons of each option so that you are well-informed and evaluate the most convenient option for your trip to Turkey.

What is the best option to have Internet in Turkey?

If we compare the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative, we can tell that Holafly’s eSIM data for Turkey is the most favorable alternative for travelers from all over the world. Undoubtedly, it is a smart and practical decision for your trip.

Also, with this eSIM, you’ll be able to set it up before you travel and activate your eSIM when the plane lands, so you’ll easily have cellular internet on your phone once you arrive at your destination.

U.S. tourist faces 12 years in prison after taking ammunition to Turks and Caicos

An Oklahoma man faces up to 12 years in prison on a Caribbean island after customs officials found ammunition in his luggage.

Ryan Watson traveled to Turks and Caicos with his wife, Valerie, to celebrate his 40th birthday on April 7. They went with two friends who had also turned 40.

The vacation came to an abrupt end when airport staff members found a zip-close bag containing bullets in the couple's carry-on luggage. Watson said it was hunting ammunition he had accidentally brought with him — but under a strict law in Turks and Caicos, a court may still impose a mandatory 12-year sentence.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for whitetail deer," Watson told NBC Boston in an interview conducted last week that aired after their first court appearance Tuesday.

"I recognized them, and I thought, 'Oh, man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there,'" he said.

The couple were arrested and charged with possession of ammunition. Authorities seized their passports and explained the penalties they faced.

Valerie Watson said in the interview: "When I heard that, I immediately was terrified, because I was like we can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home, and this is such an innocent mistake."

The charges against her were dropped, and she returned home to Oklahoma City on Tuesday after the court hearing to be reunited with her two young children.

"Our goal is to get Ryan home, because we can’t be a family without Dad," she said.

The couple also spoke about the financial burden of a much longer-than-planned trip. "This is something that we may never recover from," Ryan Watson said.

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a warning to travelers in September about a law that strongly prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition in Turks and Caicos, an overseas British territory southeast of the Bahamas that is a popular vacation spot.

It said: "We wish to remind all travelers that declaring a weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into TCI [Turks and Caicos Islands] and will result in your arrest."

The embassy added: "If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, we will not be able to secure your release from custody."

The embassy and the government in Turks and Caicos did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The same thing happened to another American, Bryan Hagerich, of Pennsylvania, who was arrested after ammunition was found in his luggage before he tried to board a flight out of Turks and Caicos in February. He said he accidentally left it in his bag.

Hagerich was on a family vacation with his wife and two young children but has now been in the country for 70 days. He spent eight days in prison before he posted bail.

"It’s incredibly scary. You know, you just don’t know what the next day may bring — you know, what path this may take," Hagerich told NBC Boston.

"You know, it’s certainly a lot different than packing your bags and going away with your family for a few days. It’s been the worst 70 days of my life," he said.

Hagerich, once a professional baseball player, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the MLB 2007 June amateur draft from the University of Delaware.

His case goes to trial May 3.

Middle East: Is it safe to travel to holiday destinations as tension escalates?

Are you going to Turkey, Egypt or Israel on holiday? The Foreign Office has warned travellers to several countries to monitor advice after an Iranian attack on Israel pushed tension in the Middle East up another notch.

Tension in the Middle East has ratcheted up again after Iran's attack on Israel, as the world waits to see how Benjamin Netanyahu's government will respond.

With the threat of widening conflict, people due to travel through or over the Middle East may be asking if their plans may be impacted.

On Saturday, flight data showed dozens of journeys that would have travelled over the Middle East turned back after Iran fired more than 300 drones and missiles into Israel .

Here is what airlines are saying and the latest safety advice to travellers.

EasyJet scraps Tel Aviv flights

EasyJet has suspended all flights to Tel Aviv over safety concerns.

The budget airline told Sky News it has grounded its flights until 27 October at the earliest "as a result of the continued evolving situation" in the region.

Wizz Air customers could see schedule changes

Wizz Air cancelled flights to Tel Aviv on Sunday 14 and Monday 15 April before resuming its schedule.

But it said customers could experience schedule changes as it closely monitors the situation.

British Airways operating as normal

British Airways - which operates four daily return flights per week between Heathrow and Tel Aviv - said its flights were continuing to operate as planned, but it too was monitoring the situation.

Is it safe to travel to Turkey?

Turkey is a popular holiday destination for people from the UK with the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism saying that last year 3.16 million Britons made the journey there, according to Travel Weekly.

Yet, it borders a number of countries that the Foreign Office advises against travel to.

The vast majority of the country is considered generally safe for tourists, with some exceptions.

The Foreign Office advises against all travel within 10km of the border with Syria , and all but essential travel to the Sirnak and Hakkari provinces.

Is it safe to travel to Israel?

Some parts of Israel are considered "red zones" by the Foreign Office, with the government advising against all travel there.

For the rest of the country - including East Jerusalem and Tel Aviv - the advice is to travel only if it is essential.

Tourist Israel says around 220,000 Britons usually go to the country every year and the Foreign Office is advising against travel close to the border with Gaza, within 5km of the border with Lebanon and within 500m of the border with Syria.

You can see the full updated list of "red zones" on the Foreign Office advice pages.

Don't travel to Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Lebanon or Syria - Foreign Office

The Foreign Office advises against all travel to Iran, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen.

It advises against all travel to Iraq except to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), where it advises against all but "essential travel".

Can I safely go on holiday in Egypt?

The main tourist areas in Egypt are generally considered safe, including the capital Cairo, cities along the Nile and Red Sea resorts.

Over 1.5 million British Nationals visit Egypt every year, according to analysts Gitnux, and the areas the Foreign Office warns not to travel to include the Governorate of North Sinai, where the Rafah crossing to Gaza is located, and within 20km of the border with Libya.

Check advice on other Middle East states before you travel

Following Iran's attack on Israel, the Foreign Office issued a warning relating to several countries in the surrounding area, telling travellers to check for the latest information.

Included in this are popular destinations like Dubai (visited by more than a million Britons last year according to Travel Weekly) and Marrakech.

"On 13 April 2024 Iran carried out military action against Israel. Monitor this travel advice and other media as the situation is changing fast," the FCDO said in a statement.

The countries covered by the warning include Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Bahrain, Kuwait, Libya, Jordan and Oman.

Anywhere else of concern?

Cyprus is near the region and has a large UK airbase but, as yet, there is no change in travel advice to the popular country.

Gaza aid flotilla plans to challenge Israeli blockade, organizers say

ISTANBUL — A flotilla of ships bound for the Gaza Strip is preparing to sail from Turkey in the coming days, organizers say, on a mission aimed at breaching Israel’s naval blockade and highlighting the lack of aid reaching Palestinians in the besieged enclave.

The organizers, gathered under the banner of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, have participated in similar missions for years, an effort that gained worldwide attention in 2010 after an Israeli raid on a flotilla that included a Turkish ship , the Mavi Marmara, killed 10 people and sparked a diplomatic crisis between Turkey and Israel.

But the flotilla’s well-traveled route — the Mediterranean — has gained new relevance during the current conflict as governments and relief organizations alike turn to sea deliveries to circumvent what aid groups say is Israel’s persistent obstruction of deliveries to Gaza over land.

The latest flotilla mission, which will include a cargo ship carrying more than 5,000 tons of aid, comes as global attention on Gaza’s worsening humanitarian crisis has waned, shifting to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. Apparent Turkish sensitivities over whether to allow the ships to depart have caused organizers to hedge on when exactly the voyage, which was scheduled to begin Sunday, would get underway.

The regional dynamics are “challenging,” Ann Wright, one of the flotilla organizers, said in a phone interview last week from Istanbul, where activists planning to join the maritime convoy were gathering. The mission is also at the “mercy of the port authorities” in Turkey, said Wright, a retired U.S. diplomat and former Army colonel who resigned from her State Department position in opposition to the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

“The ships are ready,” she said.

At a news conference Friday aboard one of the ships, Huwaida Arraf, a Palestinian American human rights attorney who has joined previous flotillas to Gaza, said, “Our governments have thus far done nothing but we call on them to start now, to uphold their own obligations under international law, to demand that Israel allow the flotilla safe passage to Gaza.

“We expect that Turkey will not be bought off and we will indeed sail,” she said. “Anything less than this is collaborating with the illegal siege on Gaza, and we don’t think that is what the Turkish government will do.”

The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request to comment on the flotilla’s mission. Israeli channel N12 reported Saturday that “security preparations” had begun, including for taking over the flotilla. One of the groups participating in the voyage — a Turkish Islamic charity organization, IHH — is designated as a terrorist group by Israel. The group has denied links to terrorism.

Israel has argued for years that the naval blockade is justified to prevent weapons from reaching Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza — a policy that Arraf said was part of Israel’s “hermetic closure” of the territory that amounted to collective punishment of its population, and a war crime.

A report by a U.N. panel on the May 2010 Israeli raid called the naval blockade a “legitimate security measure,” but said that Israel’s boarding of the vessels “with such substantial force at a great distance from the blockade zone” was “excessive and unreasonable.”

Since October, Israel’s hindrance of aid deliveries by land, as well its attacks on relief organizations, have helped fuel a humanitarian crisis that has caused northern Gaza to slide into famine, according to aid officials and human rights groups.

The killing of seven World Central Kitchen workers by Israeli forces on April 1 highlighted the dangerous environment in which relief agencies operate. In the aftermath, the Biden administration warned Israel to swiftly address civilian suffering in Gaza or risk future U.S. support.

“This is a completely man-made and preventable situation,” Andrea De Domenico, the head of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the occupied Palestinian territory, said during a press briefing last week. “I think there has been a lot of effort from our side and the Israeli side to some extent to increase the volume of aid that is going to the north,” he said, while adding that significant obstacles remained.

In a six-day period this month, “41 percent of our requests for operations in the north have been denied,” he said. For Gaza’s residents, “every day is literally a struggle to survive.”

In March, President Biden announced a plan to establish a maritime aid corridor to Gaza, shortly after the United States joined other countries in dropping relief supplies by air on the enclave. Humanitarian officials said that while any additional deliveries were welcome, they were no substitute for aid delivered by trucks.

Wright said the flotilla would include a cargo ship carrying food packages, water, ambulances and medical supplies including anesthesia. “We are trying to stop the starvation,” she said. “It’s not nearly enough. It will make a dent,” she said.

Flotilla participants were conducting nonviolence training last week, in advance of the scheduled departure, she said. “We hope that we can get into Gaza,” Wright said. But they were preparing for the myriad ways they could be turned back.

Many of the governments in the region had participated in stymieing previous Gaza missions, including Greece, which stopped boats from departing in 2011. The United States had warned its citizens not to participate in the missions, and offered “very little assistance” when American activists on the flotillas were detained and then deported by Israel, she said.

If the current mission got underway, they were possibly facing an “armada,” she said, with U.S. warships stationed in the waters off Israel.

Mustafa Ozbek, the media coordinator for IHH, said the organizers had notified the Turkish government, the United Nations and other international institutions about the mission.

Dylan Saba, a 31-year-old writer and attorney who was planning to travel with the flotilla, said he was joining in part because “there is an obligation for citizens of the world to act, where governments have failed, and to act in the spirit of international law.”

As a Palestinian whose father was born in Gaza, he said there was a “lot of symbolic value in being able to accompany this aid that we are attempting to deliver, not just to my distant family members who are living there, but all of the Palestinians of Gaza.”

“I feel very confident that this is the right thing for me to do,” he said. “But I would be lying to you if I said that I was not scared.”

Alon Rom in Tel Aviv contributed to this report.

Israel-Gaza war

The war: On Oct. 7, Hamas militants launched an unprecedented cross-border attack on Israel that included the taking of civilian hostages at a music festival . (See photos and videos of how the deadly assault unfolded ). Israel declared war on Hamas in response, launching a ground invasion that fueled the biggest displacement in the region since Israel’s creation in 1948 .

Gaza crisis: In the Gaza Strip, Israel has waged one of this century’s most destructive wars , killing tens of thousands and plunging at least half of the population into “ famine-like conditions. ” For months, Israel has resisted pressure from Western allies to allow more humanitarian aid into the enclave .

U.S. involvement: Despite tensions between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and some U.S. politicians , including President Biden, the United States supports Israel with weapons , funds aid packages , and has vetoed or abstained from the United Nations’ cease-fire resolutions.
