Napa Valley Golf Courses

Napa Valley golf courses offer excellent options for playing a round among the grapes. Some are public courses, others are private -- all get rave reviews from locals and tourists.

You may have already guessed the courses here are popular. It's difficult to get on unless you reserve a tee time at least  a couple weeks in advance. Check websites for specifics about tee times, fees, and course layouts.

If you've never played Napa Valley golf, there are some things you should know.

  • Some courses have gone the extra mile on design and landscape. Big ponds with fountains and waterfalls, hilly terrain, abundant flowers and shrubs, plus surrounding vineyards may create new challenges. Bring plenty of balls.
  • Although the mountains protect Napa Valley golf courses from strong Pacific winds, the stubborn fog sometimes settles in like a thick layer of cream across the fairways, hiding the low-lying greens and bunkers. Fog isn't predictable, and you may be glad you reserved an afternoon tee time.
  • That same misty air keeps the grass softer here than you may be used to. Don't be surprised if you have to go up one club on your fairway shots to get extra lift on the ball, or give extra oomph to your putt because the greens are slow.

Vintner's Golf Club

7901 Solano Avenue, Yountville * 707-944-1992 * vintnersgolfclub.com

This stunning gem is located in the charming town of Yountville. The public championship 9-hole course has 3 sets of tees to challenge the experienced as well as please the scratch player. This pristine course boasts spectacular scenery and a fully stocked pro shop. After a couple hours on the links, grab a burger and a beer at the club's Lakeside Grill. It's not the fanciest menu in town, but the views from the terrace are a feast for the eyes.

You can take lessons here from PGA and Senior PGA Pro Bob Boldt. Bob holds an impressive record and 30 years' experience playing and teaching golf. Tee times can be reserved online, and be sure to check out special savings offers.

Chardonnay Golf Club

2555 Jameson Canyon Road, Southeast of Napa * 707-257-1900 * chardonnaygolfclub.com

Located at the gateway of Napa Valley, and surrounded by chardonnay vineyards, this semi-private course offers magnificent scenery. The 18-hole championship golf course has a unique layout of six par fives, six par fours and six par threes that wind around trees and lakes. And this is especially unusual -- there are five sets of tees to challenge the pros as well as accomodate newer players.

This Napa Valley golf club's large "learning center" offers ideal spots to practice your drives, bunker shots and putts. There's a pro shop and a bar and grill, plus many facilities for all kinds of events -- from business banquets to wedding receptions.

Golf Eagle Vines Course

Eagle Vines Golf Club

580 South Kelly Road, Napa * 707-257-4470 * eaglevinesgolfclub.com

Spread across the foothills, this beautifully landscaped course is surrounded by vineyards. Everywhere you look, you'll take in a glorious view of emerald-green fairways woven amongst the oak trees, glistening ponds and waterfalls. This 18-hole public course, designed by Hall of Famer Johnny Miller, is a golfer's dream come true. You can see it for yourself -- the whole course is shown on their website, hole by hole.

You can sign up to take private or group lessons from PGA Head Pro Marcus Sharit, Assistant Pro and PGA member Dan Lithgow and LPGA Assistant Pro Valerie Maio. Marcus, Dan and Valerie each have a wealth of experience teaching the game.

Napa Golf Course at Kennedy Park

2295 Streblow Drive, Napa, California * 707-255-4333 * playnapa.com

Located in the city of Napa, this 18-hole municipal Napa Valley golf course has the usual amenities: golf carts, practice range and golf shop, plus a Taproom, open for lunch. Narrow fairways make the course a little challenging, and unfortunately, with the current drought, they are below par. This is one of the most relaxed, kid-friendly, and affordable courses you'll find in the region.

Whether you want to perfect your swing or practice your putt, PGA Class A Member David Knox is here for one-on-one or group instruction. From tee to green, David's expertise may take your game to a new level. Want to practice on your own? Grab a bucket of balls at the practice range.

Napa Valley golf course, Silverado Resort Golf

Silverado Resort

1600 Atlas Peak Road, Napa * Pro Shop: 707-257-5460 * silveradoresort.com

This club's two 18-hole championship golf courses are private to club members and guests of the resort. Redesigned by PGA Hall of Famer, Johnny Miller, the courses offer water and elevation challenges and are surrounded with mature oak trees. Beginners and seasoned golfers alike will love playing these beautiful Napa Valley golf courses.

Many consider them to be the best in Wine Country. In fact, the golf courses have been recognized with the Distinguished Golf Destination Award from BoardRoom Magazine in partnership with Forbes Travel Guide . If you're staying here with golf in mind, be sure to take a look at the "Golfer's Dream" package on the Silverado Resort website.

Want lessons? Learn from PGA or LPGA pros who can take your game to the next level. You just don't get access to private or group instruction from pros with this kind of teaching experience anywhere. Want to look like a pro? The golf shop can outfit you with the proper gear.

Meadowood Resort and Spa

900 Meadowood Lane, St. Helena * 707-963-3646 * meadowood.com

This luxurious resort features a 9-hole golf course that's open only to members and hotel guests. The executive 9 is short and sweet, leaving you plenty of time for the nearly endless activities you'll enjoy here: tennis, swimming, croquet and hiking. Plus, there's a fitness facility offering countless cardio, cycling, pilates, strength training and yoga classes. Whew! And when you're ready to wind down, the resort's spa has pampering treatments to soothe your body and mind.

Golf instruction is available from the club's resident pro, Doug Pike. Want to practice on your own? Check out the new TrackMan studio, offering the latest technology to help golfers perfect their swing.

What are the best public golf courses in Napa Valley, California?

Napa Valley signage

Introduction to Napa Valley

In this blog post we’re going to take a look at the best public golf courses in the county of Napa Valley , in northern California.

Napa Valley is known worldwide as being a wine lover’s paradise. It is also considered as one of the finest viticultural areas in the United States.

50 miles northeast of San Francisco, the destination attracts millions of wine tourists annually.

Clearly most people come to visit the world-class wineries and explore the miles upon miles of vineyards. But vineyards aside, the valley is majestic.

Rolling countrysides and tranquil beauty all build a delectable allure and forms the perfect setting for your visit.

And if you fancy playing golf when in Napa Valley, I’ve listed below the best public golf courses running from Vallejo in the south, through Napa and up towards St Helena.

List of the best public golf courses in Napa Valley

Have your say, 1. silverado resort (north course & south course).

Silverado Golf, Napa Valley, California, Permission Given.

The top class Silverado Resort is in the heart of Napa Valley, east of Union and Napa heading up into the hills.

The location is wonderful, peaceful and serene. Some would say the ideal spot for a luxury resort. Unsurprisingly, this is an incredibly popular vacation destination. Not just golfers, but all types of visitors to Napa, be it leisure, wine-lovers, outdoor enthusiasts…you name it.

Guests can enjoy fine dining, outstanding amenities and a stylish spa. But the fact there are two championship level, 18-hole golf courses onsite, adds to the overall package.

Both courses, the North and the South, were designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and are quite franky, top class. Whilst more recently, PGA Hall-of-Famer Johnny Miller led a thorough redesign and renovation.

Many of you may recognise the North Course, as it is here the PGA Tour’s Fortinet Championship has been held. Whilst in by-gone years, various other big-time golf tournaments have also been hosted here.

Because of this, the North Course is the layout which gets most credit and acclaim. Despite this, both are superb and deserving of being considered some of the best public golf courses in Napa Valley.

Set in a valley, the North is a traditional parkland course littered with hundreds of mature trees including elegant redwoods and oaks. This is not one of those courses where you can hit and hope. Tactical positioning alongside accurate tee play is essential.

Johnny Miller’s modernization efforts have undeniably improved the layout. Yet the course still retains much of its old-school parkland appeal.

But the biggest mistake you could do, is to only play the North Course. The South Course is yet another fun and challenging layout which simply must be played.

It is also very strategic, with plenty of doglegs and uneven lies on the rolling hills. But unlike on the North Course where even the slightest mis-judgment may trip you up, the South is easier-going and less penal.

As an overall package, there isn’t much else in Napa Valley that can compete with Silverado Resort. And the only way to access both courses is to either know a member, or be a guest at the resort.

Therefore indulge yourself, eat well, drink good American wine, and enjoy the afternoon on the fairways.

2. Hiddenbrooke Golf Club

Hiddenbrooke golf Club, Napa Valley, California, Permission Given

From one outstanding golf course to another, this time we take a look at the phenomenal Hiddenbrooke Golf Club.

Although Napa Valley hasn’t got dozens of golf courses, what it does have is great quality. And Hiddenbrooke is without doubt right up there as one of the best.

This is an Arnold Palmer design and managed by the world-renowned Troon Golf.

Located just to the east of Vallejo, the course is nestled up in the Bay Area Ridge, an area epitomized by rolling hills and arid peaks.

Over the years, Hiddenbrooke has been coveted in praise. Golf Digest awarded it 4½ stars, not something thrown away lightly. Golf World Reader’s Choice ranked it in the Top 50 Public Golf Courses in the Nation.

Fair to say, this is an impressive facility with a top class layout.

Needless to say, with someone as experienced and coveted as Arnold Palmer, you can rest assured this is going to be well designed and a fun round of golf.

Tight undulating fairways, large sand bunkers and plenty of water, all sit alongside forced carries and sharp dog-legs. This is anything but boring! Whilst the canyons and hills make for a magnificent backdrop.

Due to the challenging nature of the course, it might not be everyone’s preferred choice. But it will certainly entertain and dazzle!

3. Chardonnay Golf Club

Chardonnay Golf Club, Napa Valley, CAlifornia, Facebook - resized

Located in Jamieson County, southeast of Napa city, is the wonderful semi-private facility of Chardonnay Golf Club.

This is the gateway to Napa Valley, as evidenced by the miles upon miles of vineyards surrounding the club.

So much so, the routing of the Chardonnay golf course meanders through over 150 acres of vineyards. These include Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir vineyards.

The club opened in 1991 and was designed by the relatively unknown Algie Pulley. Pulley’s name may not be the most recognised amongst most golfers, but he was relatively prolific designing courses across America in the late twentieth century.

As well as vineyards, you’ll find a number of lakes and snaking creeks. Whilst the site and setting is enhanced by the combination of native flora and fauna, which in turn hides plenty of wildlife.

In the distance, you may occasionally hear the highway. But no doubt you’ll enjoy the fact there is no housing or other buildings lining fairways. This is nature and golf.

A challenging course but well worth playing on your route to Napa Valley.

4. Eagle Vines Golf Club

Eagle Vines Golf CLub, Napa Valley, CAlifornia, Facebook - resized

North of Vallejo and conveniently located right next to the Napa County Airport, is the superb Eagle Vines Golf Club.

This fantastic Napa public golf course is located right next to the just as popular Chardonnay Golf Club. Both are nestled in the same vineyard laden landscape, dotted with large lakes, meandering creeks and dense greenery.

Hidden amongst this verdant landscape is a wealth of wildlife, including hawks and the majestic golden eagle.

But back to the golf course and this fun layout was designed by the highly respected Johnny Miller. As a World Golf Hall of Famer, maybe it shouldn’t come as a surprise to know Eagle Vines is possibly one of the most challenging in the public golf facilities in the Napa Valley.

Offsetting the stunning views and peaceful surroundings, is a demanding layout which demands precision play. Narrow fairways intertwined with creeks and sprawling undergrowth. And small multi-tiered greens which are wickedly tough to read.

Not only do you need to strike the ball accurately, you also need to hit it long. From the back tees, the course measures just shy of 7,300 yards.

Regardless of how you play, you’ll be sure to relax in the clubhouse. The Grill is known far and wide as being a great place to eat serving some of the best local wines.

And with twilight rates around the $50 mark, amazing value too.

6. Blue Rock Springs Golf Course (West Course & East Course)

Blue Rock Springs Golf Course, Napa Valley, California, PErmission Given - resized

Blue Rock Springs Golf Club is just one of a couple of options in Napa Valley with two 18-hole championship courses onsite.

This super-friendly, accommodating and popular club lies just to the east of Vallejo, out towards Hiddenbrooke Park.

Some might argue Vallejo sits just outside of Napa Valley. But frankly, it’s close enough and Blue Rock Springs is too good not to include.

Over the years the club has received plenty of acclaim and recognition. Recognised as a top facility in Solano County or receiving praise from the U.S. Commerce Association, it is clearly a great public golf facility.

The two courses are the East and the West, with the West being the original layout having opened in 1949.

Some forty five years later, with the help of the respected architect Robert Muir Graves, came the East Course.

Neither is particularly long, both measuring under 6,200 yards. But there is so much more to enjoy here than just simple yardage.

Positioned along a hillside, both courses feature plenty of movement and elevation changes.

The East Course is arguably a little more accommodating, with some open fairways and generous landing areas.Whilst the West features a fair number of narrow tree-lined fairways.

Occasional water hazards and large bunkers keep golfers honest. Whilst all of this is played with a beautiful backdrop of golden hills.

Unpretentious and great value, Blue Rock Springs is a great addition to any Napa Valley golf vacation.

8. Napa Golf Course

Napa Golf Course, Napa Valley, CAlifornia, Facebook - resized

A heartbeat of golf in the Napa Valley area, Napa Golf Course at Kennedy Park is a popular municipal haunt.

The club was designed by the architect Jack Fleming, who was also responsible for the West Course at Blue Rock Springs. He also designed the now closed Mount Saint Helena Golf Course in Calistoga, north of the Napa Valley.

Opening in 1968, Napa Golf Course is a fun layout but also surprisingly challenging. The topography is relatively flat, so most of this challenge comes in course management with a number of tricky tee shots.

On the front nine, expect more traditional parkland style holes, with ‘what you see is what you get’ holes. Fairways are scenic and mostly tree-lined.

As the round goes on, the trees slowly give way to open plains, with vast amounts of water hazards coming into play. This is where course management is critical to avoid losing too many balls!

Great value, Napa Golf Course is very popular with the locals and will welcome visitors and public golfers all days of the week.

Where to Golf in Napa Valley: Discover the Best Golf Courses | Vacation-Napa.com

napa valley golf trip

Napa Valley is a fantastic place to visit if you love learning about and tasting wine. However, there are other things to do in Napa Valley as well. For the golf lover, there are some really magnificent golf courses to experience, learn from, and add to your favorite golfing venues.

Where to golf in Napa Valley?

  • Vintner’s Golf Course

Napa Golf Course

Mayacama golf club, chardonnay golf club, rancho solano golf course, napa valley country club, mount saint helena golf course.

Golfing in Napa Valley is a sight to see. Napa Valley is one of the only places where you can golf in a course surrounded by beautiful rolling vineyards in the distance. The beautiful greenery and the wine options on the course are just a combination of two great things – wine and golf.

So, to help you know where to enjoy your golf hobby while taking in the wine region, we’ve put together a list of great places to get your golf game on!

Vintner’s Golf Course

A highly recommended golf course in Napa Valley is Vintner’s Golf Course. This golf course was redesigned by Bob Boldt in 2003, a “Class A” PGA superintendent, though it was originally designed in 1999 by gold legend Casey O’Callaghan. Vintner’s golf course offers membership options, which is common for most well known golf courses. However, this is a championship 9 hole course that can be enjoyed by golfers of all skill levels. Their reviews boast of the customer service and beautiful scenery on the course.

This golf course is a short 9 miles from the city of Napa, CA itself in Yountville, making it very convenient for those visiting Napa for the wine. Yountville is actually known for their wineries and restaurants, but is getting their name on the map for their golf course as well. This golf club is well raved for their food options, from street fair to classy dishes, and for their fabulous lakeside scenery. This is just what you would expect from a posh golf course. A nice bonus is that their bar is open daily from 9 am to sundown.

Right in the heart of Napa, CA is the Napa Golf Course at Kennedy Park. This golf course promotes a full service championship golf range of 18 holes, consisting of an 85,00 square foot gorgeous putting green, as well as a shorter option of a 9 hole course, for those who may be short on time. They also boast a driving range with 22 individual stalls with synthetic mats and a full service golf club house. So if you only have time for practice, those course definitely has you covered.

They are well known for their customer service and beautiful grounds. They also offer golf lessons from a PGS Class A Professional staff, which means you’ll get nothing but the best from their lessons on site. They offer different packages for different skilled golfers, as well as wedding venue options due to their beautiful backdrops and scenery.

Noted as one of the most beautiful and notable championship golf clubs in all of California, Mayacama Golf Club is in a class all it’s own. Just an hour from Napa, CA, Mayacama Golf Club is definitely not one to miss for the golf enthusiast.

The Mayacama gold course is one of tradition, with the intent to walk the course with customs set back to Scottish folklore. However, this is a Jack Nicklaus signature course, which means it really ranks up there in the finest of golf course in the world. Frequently listed in Golf Digest’s “Top 100 Courses in America,” Mayacama golf course provides approximately 6,800 yards of golfing layout, sure to challenge even the best golfers.

Combined with the wine lover enthusiast, Mayacama Golf Club offers something unique to the wine lover in all of us. In a place where you can find the very best Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Cabernet, and Pinot Noir this side of the United States, Mayacama brings the wine lover and the golf lover together. Members of this golf club often get first dibs on the wine selection offered through their Vintner’s Wine Club membership with “behind the scenes” events at their wineries and local venues.

Chardonnay Golf Club ; the name of this golf club will make you want to try it out just to say that you did, set among 150 acres of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Merlot vineyards. The Chardonnay golf club is a high end, full service, semi-private 18-hole golf course. It’s located just south of Napa in Jamieson Canyon, right at the heart of Napa Valley Wine Country. The course itself is designed to appeal to even the entry level golfer while challenging even the advanced pro, as it crosses lakes, lines the creek side, and includes several tree orchards for a variety of challenging yet scenic settings. They even dedicate some of their land to wildlife preserves and habitat, providing sanctuary to various species of wildlife of various birds and animals.

The Chardonnay Golf Club receives accolades left and right for their excellent customer service at their golf store on site, where they provide advice to the golf newbie and even the advanced golfer. Their food and beverage staff will bring you the most scrumptious breakfast, brunch, and mid-day snacks and menu items as you enjoy your golf outing. Chardonnay golf course also offers wedding venues due to their amazing scenic setting.

Well known for their customer service and an excellent consistent course terrain, Rancho Solano Golf Course in Fairfiled, CA is just a short 24 miles from Napa, CA. Designed by Robert Muir Graves and Damian Pascuzz, the Rancho Solano does not disappoint with creek side holes and oak-lined fairways. They say this course is best played by those who know how to select their golf clubs, as the holes are challenging due to the length of the golf course and placement of the holes.

With facilities that support up to 500 people, Rancho Solano Golf Course can support the most amazing weddings, tournaments, and social gatherings. While they offer Men’s and Women’s clubs, they also provide several lesson options, to help you maintain or improve your golf fame. With such beautiful terrain, design and craftsmanship, this course is not to miss!

Due to the staff’s dedication to customer service and the immaculate scenery provided at Napa Valley Country Club , they are one of the top rated golfing locations within Napa Valley. From the food, to the course design, this club does not disappoint in any area.

Napa Valley Country club does happen to be a members only golf club; however, that is one of the features that sets itself apart from the rest of the local area golf clubs. This is one of those golf clubs that you want to be a member of if you regularly visit Napa Valley. This club offers a social outlet unlike any other golf club in the area, and tennis courts for those who enjoy more than just golf. For those who live in or visit the area regularly, you know that Napa Valley has an image to maintain. Being part of this country club helps you get there.

Napa Valley Country club includes 181 acres of beautiful oak lined landscape and vineyards. This setting really puts you right into the local venue of Napa California.

Within the grounds of Northern Napa Valley, just a short 27 miles from Napa, CA within the gorgeous grounds of Calistoga, is Mount Saint Helena Golf Course . With a very nice flat layout, this golf course appeals to all golfers from the beginner to the expert level. However, it does add some challenges for even the advanced golfer, with its tree-lined narrow fairways.

This golf course is located in Calistoga, within the fairgrounds of Napa County Fairgrounds. This is a golf course with only 9 rounds but provides beautiful scenery, including that of Mt. Saint Helena, and enough of a challenge to enjoy for the advanced golfer.

Regardless of how often you play golf, or what your golf handicap is, Napa Valley offers some golfing opportunities that you will not find in any other area of the United States. It’s unique setting is unmatched to that of the other countryside of our nation.

Welcome to VERANDA's Perfect Weekend , where we show you how to make the most of 48 hours in one of our favorite destinations. This month, we’re Napa-bound to relax and unwind in one of the world’s premier wine-growing regions. Renowned for its vine-covered rolling hills and the exquisite wine that’s a result of the labored landscape, Napa is the ultimate U.S. destination for wine lovers—but make no mistake, the valley has so much more to offer than delicious bottles of vino.

From a shocking number of Michelin-rated and -starred restaurants and beautiful architecture in the form of tasting rooms to lavish spas nestled among the valley’s verdant landscape and a recently re-developed downtown that cost a whopping $30 million to bring to life, Napa has it all. But be warned: With so much to do in the valley, a quick weekend trip may feel like a tease. Nevertheless, keep reading to learn how to have the perfect weekend in Napa. By the end of it, we have a sneaking suspicion that you’ll be eager to book your next visit.

<p>To make the absolute most of your weekend in Napa, we suggest getting an early start. To kick things off, check into <a href="https://aubergeresorts.com/aubergedusoleil/">Auberge Du Soleil</a>—considered to be Napa’s most luxurious resort—a Provence-inspired chateau outfitted with private maisons. </p><p>Once settled, lean into the allure of wine country with your first tasting. While some tasting rooms and wineries take walk-ins, it’s best to make reservations or set up appointments prior to arrival. Take <a href="https://www.dakotashywine.com/">Dakota Shy Winery</a>—a beautiful estate just down the road from Auberge Du Soleil—for example. The ivy-covered boutique winery—which is founded upon the ethos of hard work, commitment, and determination—welcomes visitors by appointment only. The beauty of this is that your first sips in Napa will be not only more personal, but also more educational as you’ll be able to converse freely with the winemakers about the entire process. </p><p>Another thing you may want to think about before setting foot in Napa? How you plan to get around. While Uber and Lyft are available, cars can take a while to show up and can be more difficult to find after 8 p.m. Because of this, we (along with many people we talked to) suggest booking a private driver for your time in Napa (<a href="https://nvtt.net/">Napa Valley Tours</a> is one of the top picks among both locals and tourists.). While undoubtedly expensive, the ease of getting from point A to point B and the assurance of not missing a reservation make it well worth the investment. </p>

To make the absolute most of your weekend in Napa, we suggest getting an early start. To kick things off, check into Auberge Du Soleil —considered to be Napa’s most luxurious resort—a Provence-inspired chateau outfitted with private maisons.

Once settled, lean into the allure of wine country with your first tasting. The beauty of this is that your first sips in Napa will be not only more personal, but also more educational as you’ll be able to converse freely with the winemakers about the entire process.

While undoubtedly expensive, the ease of getting from point A to point B and the assurance of not missing a reservation make it well worth the investment.

<p>After wrapping up at Dakota Shy, head to your next tasting at <a href="https://ashesdiamonds.com/">Ashes & Diamonds</a>. The boutique winery and tasting room is loved for its wine and stunning design. The bright white building and its uniformly zig-zagged roof (designed by architect <a href="https://bestorarchitecture.com/">Barbara Bestor</a>) stand out from the lush green landscape and the more rustic estates that dot it, but it's the interior that will stop you in your tracks. </p><p>Founder, Kashy Khaledi (son of Darioush Khaledi, owner of Napa’s iconic <a href="https://www.darioush.com/">Darioush Winery</a>), wanted to pay homage to Napa in the '60s, and to do so, he outfitted the space in retro mid-century modern furniture doused in pops of color. The result? A picture-perfect tasting room where you could easily spend an entire day. While there are many highly rated restaurants worth visiting, <a href="https://mustardsgrill.com/">Mustards Grill</a>, a Michelin-rated restaurant led by chef and wine country pioneer Cindy Pawlcyn, sits just eight minutes northwest of Ashes & Diamonds. <p>After taking your time at breakfast—trust us, with that view, you won’t want to rush—make your way to <a href="https://www.chandon.com/en-US/visit-us.html">Domaine Chandon</a>. The recently remodeled, blush-toned winery is built into the grounds to be virtually invisible from passerby. <p>After checking out, take stock of how much time you have before needing to be home or back at SFO. If you’re traveling by air, you’ll make your way down Highway 29 back toward the airport. On your way, stop back in Yountville for a couple bites. First, step into <a href="https://www.thomaskeller.com/bouchonbakeryyountville">Bouchon Bakery</a>, an iconic Thomas Keller creation known for its artisanal breads and traditional French desserts (the ham, egg, and cheese danish, chocolate croissant, and iced mocha are all a delight). napa valley golf trip

One of the beauties about golf, besides the azalea-flanked 13th hole at Augusta National Golf Club, home of this week’s Masters, is that unlike most professional sports, you and I can actually  play where the pros play.

Is surf-hugging Pebble Beach Golf Links too beautiful to only watch on TV every February? Then go online and get a tee time for a gorgeous California course that has made U.S. Open champions of such greats as Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Tiger Woods, and has hosted an iconic pro-am annually since 1947. Feel like playing 18 in the Hill Country home of the Texas State Open? The Ram Rock course, considered the most difficult among the four at renowned Horseshoe Bay Golf Resort outside of Austin, welcomes all from hacker to scratcher. Same with Hawaii’s paradisal Plantation Course at Kapalua, which hosts the wintertime Sentry Tournament of Champions, and The Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass in Florida, home of one of the most esteemed stops on the PGA tour.

Unfortunately, for us golf lovers not among the top 1%, water hazards and sand traps aren’t our only obstacles. It takes a lot of green to play the greens. A round at Sawgrass, for example, can set one back a grand at peak tee times, making Pebble Beach sound like a bargain at $675. Another reality is not every prestigious or pro-played golf course puts out the welcome mat for us commoners. Teeing off at Augusta National, for one, pretty much requires being besties with a club member or past Masters champion.

The good news is we club-swinging stalwarts have alternatives when hankering to play legendary links. The U.S. is dotted with them, but if we take our virtual golf cart to the warm-weather golfing meccas of California, Hawaii, Texas and Florida, our GPS system can locate less forbidding championship courses that are also vacation-worthy because they’re linked to topnotch resorts with accommodations, dining and activities to match.

Where are these swinging Shangri-las? This question is well-timed. Aware that golf fever is peaking with this week’s Masters and next month’s U.S. Women’s Open — we’re in the heart of the PGA, LPGA, PGA Champions and LIV tours, as if you didn’t know — we’ve scouted the four aforementioned states for resorts that are well above par even if your score isn’t under par. Quality doesn’t come cheap, but unlike some of the more hoity-toity clubs, this quartet of courses will welcome you with open arms, which, if you listen to Tiger, should be wide on the backswing to allow your muscles to stretch to their full potential.

Traveling west to east ….

Ko Olina Golf Club

Retired LPGA phenom Michelle Wie is honored with a statue at the entrance of Oahu's Ko Olina Golf Club. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Golf in Hawaii is nearly as kingly as Kamehameha, so playing a tropics-kissed course that’s drop-dead gorgeous isn’t hard to do in the Aloha State. What isn’t as easy as Sunday morning is finding a premier property with a cool, unpretentious vibe. That’s Ko Olina Golf Club on Oahu. Perennially ranked among the nation’s top resort courses, Ko Olina ( koolinagolf.com ) is a judgment-free zone with great taste in its partnerships with the Four Seasons Resort at Ko Olina, the choice property within the master-planned oceanfront community, and an on-site Roy’s Hawaiian fusion restaurant that might be the best in the chain.

The Ted Robinson-designed course is decked with stunning water features, multi-tiered greens and generous landing areas. Here is where retired LPGA phenom Michelle Wie developed her game, and there’s a statue of her out front to prove it. The pro shop is consistently ranked among the best in the U.S., and with the rental clubs being TaylorMade graphite, it’s tempting not to schlep your set. Inclusive of cart rental, a logoed tumbler and a basket of range balls, adult fees are no higher than $255, and go down to $190 after 1 p.m.

A short shuttle ride or stroll away is the 371-unit Four Seasons ( fourseasons.com ), which offers digs and dining befitting the five-star brand, and serves as a model for luxury Hawaiian resorts striving to appeal to everyone from young families to honeymooners to seniors. An impressive schedule of daily activities is augmented by R&R offerings that include the five-star Naupaka Spa, inviting lagoons and pools, and first-rate horseback riding in the scenic Waianae Mountains.

The Links at Spanish Bay

Good food and good golf make for good times at the Pebble Beach Resorts, home of The Links at Spanish Bay. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Having recently walked the storied course and hallowed halls of the 146-year-old Royal Troon Golf Club, which in July will host its 10th Open Championship, this unworthy duffer can now distinguish between a “Scottish-style links” course and the real deal. While the landscape between Pebble Beach and the south Ayrshire coast has little in common besides a shoreline, getting in a round at The Links at Spanish Bay does hint of playing Royal Troon’s Old Course.

Helping get in the Scottish spirit is a bagpiper who plays for about 45 minutes before sunset from the first tee to the second. Fee-wise, guests staying at The Inn at Spanish Bay pay $350, which includes a cart. It’s a stately and elegant hotel with 269 rooms, and has reciprocity with other Pebble Beach Resorts facilities ( pebblebeach.com ). Overlooking spectacular sand dunes with an endless view of the Pacific costs just north of $1,000 a night, but that’s less than the rates at the sister properties, The Lodge and Casa Palermo.

Snob factor aside, “better” and “best” don’t get much more than “good” — not when Spanish Bay’s lowest-price room still comes with a romantic fireplace, reading nook, choice of nine different types of pillows and other niceties.

Lost Pines Golf Club

Wild Texas bluebonnets and Nicholas Holditch's backswing make for great shots on the Lost Pines course where he is lead golf instructor. (Photo by David Dickstein)

The phrase “everything is bigger in Texas” certainly applies to the list of activities at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort & Spa ( lostpinesresortandspa.com ), a Hill Country jewel along the banks of the Lower Colorado River. On more than 400 glorious acres just outside Austin, you can fish, ride horses and ponies, pet goats, alpacas, pigs and donkeys, say “howdy” to morbidly named Texas Longhorns (Chuck, Sirloin, Brisket, T-Bone and Ribeye — really?), go on a wagon ride and hay ride, trap shoot, fire off BB guns, slingshots and arrows, throw tomahawks, swim, float on a 1,000-foot, palm tree-lined lazy river, play tennis and pickleball, and, oh yeah, golf.

Deep in the heart of Texas is a 7,200-yard course well-described by the club’s lead golf instructor as “undulating and isolated.” Green fees top at around $200. A recent multimillion-dollar makeover included a redesign of holes 10 through 13, rebuilt bunkers and a name change from Wolfdancer. Designed by golf architect Arthur Hills, Lost Pines is a par-72 beauty graced by rolling prairies, wooded ridgelines and groves of native pecan trees.

A day of golfing and horseback riding is par for the course at the Lost Pines Resort near Austin, Texas. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Apparently, those homegrown pecans aren’t good enough for the nuttiest dessert served at Maude’s, a bastion of Southern hospitality ironically named for the Texas-sized pecan tree that towers over the outside tables. But like nearly everything guests taste, touch and see at the 490-unit resort, the headline ingredient of the yummy bourbon pecan pie is still locally sourced. Deliciousness continues with the lamb sliders, artisanal charcuterie and flawless libations that include a killer carajillo. Take one sip of their version of this classic Spanish coffee-based cocktail and you may never order an espresso martini again.

Before we leave Lost Pines, hoping to return again, a shout-out to Sushi By Scratch for a new-wave spin on the Japanese dining experience of omakase, where it’s basically chef’s choice through 17 individually paced pieces of nigiri, A5 wagyu beef and other delicacies. Seatings are limited to 10 patrons, each paying a minimum of $165 for this event meal. Sushi By Scratch’s Lost Pines location is one of 10 in the U.S., four of which are in California.

The Boca Raton

The signature island-green 18th hole is a beautifully challenging way to finish a round at The Boca Raton in South Florida. (Photo by David Dickstein)

It’s hard to imagine a classier, cleaner and more comfortable resort than The Boca Raton ( thebocaraton.com ) in South Florida. This place is so exquisite after a history-respecting, $200-million reimagination, if it weren’t for the bill at the end it could qualify as heaven on Earth.

Dating back to 1926, The Boca Raton’s rich golf heritage includes Tommy Armour and Sam Sneed serving as its first two golf directors — 10 majors won between them. The resort’s Harborside Golf Course, exclusive to members and guests, is dedicated to these two legends. The par-71, 18-hole championship-level course features 12 acres of water, some put to use for a signature island-green finishing hole. From June to October, green fees are $210. That includes a golf cart and — get this — the food and beverage cart. We’re talking Asian shrimp salad, roasted turkey shawarma, rotisserie chicken salad and more delivered on the course by a pleasant attendant, and just for the asking. As we said, classy.

So is the adjacent high-tech driving range. Included in the resort fee are hitting stations powered by state-of-the-art Toptracer technology designed to perfect your swing. A monitor displays helpful data related to your golf ball’s speed, distance and spin rate. The digital gaming options are a blast.

A yacht-lined marina is the view from balconies of the adults-only suites at The Boca Raton in South Florida. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Taking off the cleats, also on the resort’s 365 acres are five hotels within a hotel that make up 835 total rooms. The adults-only Yacht Club claims 112 of those units, all chic suites with private balconies and views of Lake Boca Raton, the Atlantic and a yacht-lined marina. Amenities include a butler, exclusive dining and an invitation to explore the South Florida coast while behind the wheel of a $200,000 Aston Martin DBX. Which begs the question: Do we dream about buying that or membership into the Augusta National Golf Club?
