Flex Fuel Question

Hi, we just bought a 2013 Dodge Journey SXT yesterday! So, the Journey we bought yesterday was a certified pre-owned vehicle. It only had 18,400 miles on it. It was a rental vehicle, and it has a 7 year, 100,000 mile warranty that started in 12.2012, which means we have about 6 years 4 months left. So it has the 283 HP 3.6L Pentastar V6 that features Flex Fuel that allow it to take Ethanol fuel. Here's my question...I was reading that there is no real standard for this fuel, so the only cons are that the Ethanol fuel might not perform as well as a gas engine and more importantly, certain cars that use Flex Fuel need some sort of Engine lubricant if you do use Ethanol with it.

Can anyone tell me if that's true. Do I need to put something special in it to use Ethanol? I really want to use this as I live in SoCal and the gas prices where we live are $3.86 (for lowest normal gas price 87 Octane) vs. $3.25 for Ethanol. Is there anything I should know about using Ethanol over gas? Do I need to use anything at all in order to use this fuel? Can anyone tell me if the performance is affected by using Ethanol and if so, then how much. I would like to see the pros and cons for it. Like I said earlier, the only cons that I read was Ethanol might not perform as well as regular gas and some engines require something special in order to use Ethanol.

Thanks in advance!

Not sure about any additional additives, but here is an article summarizing the pros and cons of ethanol.

If you have to add a special additive with the flex fuel and also have a drop of 30% in fuel mileage using flex fuel then why bother? I would just stick with 87 octane.

Like

Use gas ethanol is a waste of $$$$

I haven't read that I will get worse performance, just that cars that take alternative fuels aren't enhanced to run better on those fuels. I'm going to call our dealership tomorrow and ask all about that. Thanks for the responses.

Straight from the 2013 DJ's owners manual:

OK, thanks, I don't have the owner's manual yet. They are going to send us one, but I'll take your word for it. It doesn't sound like any real benefit then. The 70 cents or so I would save is negated with the higher fuel consumption. I guess that answers that question...thanks.

You can download the owners manual for free by clicking the link:

Thanks for that!

Congrats on the new purchase! Everyone else beat me to the correct responses! Enjoy.

Personally I am not big on ethanol, in fact I often use Premium Gas on the highway, MY car seems to do much better when it comes to gas mileage, obviously you may be different.

Thanks for that. I must say that I wouldn't have given Dodge a second thought, save maybe for a Challenger or Charger. Anyway, we certainly love it!

Personally I am not big on ethanol, in fact I often use Premium Gas on the highway, MY car seems to do much better when it comes to gas mileage, obviously you may be different. Terry
So, are you saying 92 Octane gives you better gas mileage than, say 87 Octane? Would 89 Octane give decent performance? I'm looking for the best bang for the buck.

As stated in my owners manual your DJ uses 87 octane and higher octanes will offer no improvement whatsoever. Now, here in Canada or some parts of Canada our Shell V-power contains 0% ethanol which may give you a bit more mileage but IMO not enough to justify paying the extra money.

  • 3 weeks later...

If I know I will be totally driving on the highway, I may use premium gas as my 2010 R/T AWD SEEMS to get better mileage than using regular but I don;t have enough trips to speak confidently on this.

E-85 ethanol, is a pipe dream started up by our goverment to help solve our fuel problems, the big problem with it that they are using corn to make it and that is not the best plant to use but suger cane and other plants dont grow here like they do in other parts of the world. ethanol gas needs to be one third of the cost of a gallon of reg gas to make up for the loss of performance and mpg to make it the same cost, only problem is they only discount it about 50 to 60 cents cheaper than reg gas. CNG is they way for us to get away from being dependent on gas and that wont happen for at least a couple of yrs. because they have to get enought fueling stations for it around the country enought so people will feel ok with it.to buy the cars that run on it. it is a cleaner and better way to power our future untill they get electric cars with a longer range of miles . also do not use ethanol in you car if it is NOT made to run on it, your car should say on the yellow gas cap that it is okay to use it. If it is not a flex fuel vec YOU WILL DAMAGE you engine no additive will prevent any damage to the engine not made to run it.....

  • 1 month later...

(just to present myself, i ordered a fiat freemont V6 AWD and i live on the border between france, switzerland and germany)

I am participating in quite a lot of european Fiat freemont forums, and we couldnt find answer to this very particular question:

our Fiat Freemont ( dodge journey rebadged) are produced in toluca mexico, like yours,

lots of us ordered the AWD version with a V6 3.6L pentastar, anounced with 285HP

But, Fiat europe tells us our V6 3.6L pentastar AWD is not flexfuel/E85 compatible,

Now some of us are pouring E85 anyway in it, without problems so far...

The question is:

Are there any V6 3.6L pentastar AWD versions which really are not made for E85?,

or is it only fiat europe which is not enough motivated to legally certify their engines for E85?

Is your car a flex-fuel vehicle? Use this tool to find out

You’ve seen the badges on the rear ends of cars, trucks and SUVs, likely while you’re stuck in traffic. They say “FlexFuel” or, more descriptively, “FlexFuel … E85 Ethanol.” Almost 20 million vehicles in the United States come off the assembly line as flex-fuel, meaning they can run perfectly well on any mixture of gasoline and ethanol, up to E85 (which is actually 51 percent to 83 percent ethanol, the rest gasoline).

But not all of them have that shiny badge declaring them flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs). Sometimes a yellow gas cap is the dead giveaway, but those caps only started appearing on model-year 2008 vehicles (2006 for General Motors). Buried deep inside the owner’s manual, too, is a notice about which fuels are approved to run in your vehicle.

Now, there’s an easy tool that will tell you whether you’re one of those lucky 20 million whose vehicle can take E85. Fuel Freedom Foundation has just unveiled the Check Your Car tool . You can enter in your vehicle’s make, model, year and engine size, and it’ll tell you whether you’re driving an FFV.

This tool is long overdue, because ever since the first FFV rolled out of the factory — the 1996 Ford Taurus , which actually could run on gasoline, ethanol and methanol — FFV owners have consistently not taken advantage of all these engines can do. Less than 10 percent of such drivers use E85. Part of the reason likely is that only a small percentage of the nation’s fueling stations offer it. But that proportion is rising: E15, which has twice as much ethanol as regular gasoline (which contains up to 10 percent ethanol already), is spreading around the country , and more stations are offering E85 as well.

Using higher ethanol blends, and less gasoline, has multiple benefits:

  • It’s cheaper for consumers. The Renewable Fuels Association says blending ethanol into the nation’s gasoline supply saves the average American family about $1,200 a year.
  • It’s a natural octane enhancer, which makes engines perform better.
  • Since ethanol burns more efficiently, it results in fewer tailpipe emissions being released into the air, which is better for air quality.
  • It’s an American-made fuel, requiring American-based jobs. The U.S. only produces less than 10 million barrels of crude a day but consumes some 19 million. The difference must be imported.

Check Your Car is part of our Fuels 101 initiative, which will soon include other features such as an education page about the various fuel types; how to find a station that sells alternative fuels (for the time being, use the Alternative Fuels Data Center’s locator ); and how to find a kit that could convert your gasoline-only engine to run on ethanol.

So check back soon. In the meantime, kick the tires and take Check Your Car for a test drive.

What is Flex Fuel? The pros and cons of flexible fuel vehicles

We also explain what e10, e15 and e85 mean.

is the dodge journey flex fuel

On the surface, Flex Fuel sounds like a great idea. Certain cars that are designed for it can run on a variety of blends of gasoline and ethanol. OK, we all know gasoline, but what is ethanol then? It is a type of alcohol derived from crops like corn or sugarcane. Ethanol fuel came about as a response to oil shortages, starting in the 1970s, and eventually became an important market for grain farmers. Flex Fuel engine technology didn't really mature until the 1990s, and automakers, mostly the Big Three, began introducing flexible fuel vehicles.

  • Autoblog's  Cheap Gas Prices Near Me finder tool

What is Flex Fuel?

Specially equipped vehicles designated as Flex Fuel capable can operate on E85, a mix that can contain from 51% to 83% ethanol and just the remainder as gasoline. However, to a lesser degree, nearly all modern cars are already using a gasoline-ethanol mix. Most gasoline sold at pumps in the U.S. could technically be E10, a 10% ethanol blend, though it isn't always.

The EPA has also approved E15 , a 15% ethanol blend. However, in 2012 a coalition of automakers pushed back against the proposal to increase ethanol content by 50%. The EPA deems E15 safe to use in 2001 and newer cars, but there has been conflicting research on whether or not it is damaging. Many automakers said at the time that they would not honor warranties if owners used E15.

Flex Fuel pros

By stretching the amount of actual gasoline used, Flex Fuel seems like the perfect solution for extending a finite resource and reducing dependence on foreign oil. And since the ethanol was derived from renewable biomass, it was originally seen as a green solution as well.

In addition, E85 has an octane rating of about 110, higher than the 93 octane of premium fuel. That means the fuel can better resist earlier-than-expected combustion caused by compression and thus burns more completely, and a cleaner burn means fewer emissions at the tailpipe. While performance engines typically have higher compression ratios, the current crop of E85-compatible vehicles are not exactly sporting machines that can take advantage of the higher octane.

  • Read more: The latest news on today's gas prices

Because Flex Fuels use less petroleum, they are cheaper. At the time of this writing, the national average for E85 is about 80 cents less than E10, the most common type of fuel. Prices will vary by region, so check your local listings .

Flex Fuel cons

It may seem like a no-brainer to use E85 if you have a Flex Fuel vehicle in times of high gas prices . However, it should be noted that ethanol reduces fuel economy (miles per gallon) by as much as 25% to 30% . Depending on the vehicle's mpg rating and the local price of E85, drivers will have to determine for themselves whether the reduced fuel economy negates any potential savings at the pump.

Perhaps an even bigger problem is that E85 might not even be as great for the environment as proponents claim. In the U.S. most ethanol is derived from corn, and the corn industry has an immensely powerful lobby. Filling stations in states like Iowa, where corn is a major industry, have a lot more E85 available, often with stickers touting its claimed environmental benefits.

  • Read more: The latest news on ethanol

Over the years, powerful corn lobbyists have won a lot of government subsidies, which in turn prompted many producers to grow the crop even though, according to a Stanford University study , corn-based ethanol is five to six times less efficient to produce than sugarcane-based ethanol.

Another study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that after taking into account the increased clearing of land to grow corn for ethanol production, the environment would be better off if cars just burned straight gasoline. And then there's the fact that we'd be better off using the resources corn takes up to grow crops that feed actual people. Ethanol would be most beneficial if it could be economically made from biomass that would otherwise be discarded, like corn stalks and other cellulosic sources .

How to identify a Flex Fuel vehicle

Flex Fuel vehicles are designated by either a yellow fuel filler cap or a yellow ring on capless fuel tanks. They may also have labels on the inside of fuel filler doors, or special Flex Fuel badging on the vehicle. The U.S. Department of Energy offers a list of Flex Fuel vehicles on sale right now. Most are workhorses like the Chevy Silverado/ GMC Sierra, Ford Transit Connect , Transit, F-150 and F-250 . The Ford Explorer is the only standard family car currently on the list, though you can find some older, discontinued Flex Fuel cars on the used market like the Chevy Impala and Ford Taurus .

Should I use Flex Fuel?

If your vehicle wasn't built as a Flex Fuel vehicle, do not use E85. The high ethanol content will damage vital engine parts and the fuel system. As we mentioned above, it's probably best not to risk using E15 if you have an older vehicle or are unsure if it's compatible in your car.

  • Read more: The latest news on biofuels

Does ethanol damage cars?

Many sources, including the U.K.'s Royal Automobile Club , say that even E10 can be damaging to cars older than the 2002 model year. Ethanol is corrosive, and its use can damage fuel systems that weren't designed for anything other than pure unleaded gasoline. Fuel tanks, gaskets and seals, and other rubber or plastic components could all be subject to damage.

It's not a guarantee of damage, and how susceptible your vehicle is will likely depend on the age and model. If this is a concern for classic car owners, they can either use an ethanol conditioner and stabilizer or find one of the few remaining gas stations that offer ethanol-free fuel .

Finally, gasoline blends containing ethanol are widely regarded in the boating industry as potentially damaging to outboard motors, especially two-stroke motors.

2017 Dodge Journey

2017 dodge journey

Select a year

  • Lows Underpowered engines, ponderous handling, lack of technology.
  • Verdict The Journey is a practical choice for families on a tight budget, but rival crossovers beat it in most key areas.

Introduced nearly a decade ago, the aging mid-size Journey has survived this long thanks to its affordability and practicality, but it’s decidedly lacking in the latest technology and safety equipment. Despite the availability of five trim packages, the choice of inline-four and V-6 engines, front- or all-wheel drive, and five- or seven-passenger seating, the Journey is just not truly competitive with the best family crossovers. It’s only worth considering if there’s a steep discount working in your favor.

What's New for 2017?

Not much. Other than a few new paint colors, the Journey’s biggest update this year was the renaming of its top trim level from R/T to GT.

Original MSRP:

  • SE: $22,290
  • SXT: $26,590
  • Crossroad: $28,090
  • Crossroad Plus: $29,835
  • GT: $33,090

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The base Journey comes with an underpowered 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and an ancient four-speed automatic transmission that’s best avoided. We can confidently say that its 173 horsepower isn't enough to adequately power this two-ton SUV. Even the 283-hp V-6 model is slower than most rivals. The bigger engine is punchy enough for everyday driving, but its six-speed automatic transmission is sometimes slow on the uptake when you request more power, hampering the Journey’s responsiveness. Front-wheel drive is standard with either engine; all-wheel drive is optional on the V-6 and not available with the inline-four. The Journey’s numb, ponderous handling leaves it wallowing in corners with lots of body roll and imprecise steering. The benefit of its soft suspension, however, is a comfortable ride on the freeway.

Fuel Economy

Interior, comfort, and cargo.

The Journey’s cabin is far from upscale, and fitting anyone in the third row—even children—requires compromises from those in the second row. Cheap-feeling bits, such as a plasticky shifter and hollow-sounding interior door-trim panels, are especially egregious in higher-trim Journeys. Several luxury features, including a power-adjustable passenger seat, cooled seats, and heated rear seats are notable in their absence from the options list. Practicality is one of the few areas where the Journey shines: its interior is easily configurable, and it has tons of cubby storage for odds and ends, even if its total cargo capacity isn’t as large as some rivals.

2017 dodge journey interior

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Journey comes with the same easy-to-use Uconnect touchscreen as many other Dodge products. However, only the optional system, with its larger screen, incorporates the latest connectivity features. The Journey’s standard infotainment setup has a small 4.3-inch touchscreen with only the basics: AM/FM radio, a USB port, and an auxiliary audio jack. We’d choose the optional 8.4-inch touchscreen, which has much larger touch zones and more available features, including optional navigation, voice command, and Bluetooth connectivity. Neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto is offered, and there’s only a a single USB port up front.

Full Edmunds Review: 2016 Dodge Journey SUV

For 2016, the Dodge Journey is essentially unchanged.

Edmunds says

Are you looking for an affordable crossover that has three rows of seats? The 2016 Dodge Journey could be what you want. It's family-friendly, and its modest size makes parking a cinch. Read more to find out what else about the Journey might come into play during your daily commute.

Vehicle overview

If you are like us, you may be surprised to learn that the 2016 Dodge Journey is still on sale. Other than an admittedly thorough refresh in 2011, under its skin the Journey is pretty much the same as it was when the three-row crossover debuted in 2009. During that time, the Journey's rivals have all undergone complete redesigns to remain competitive, while the Journey watches time pass from the sidelines.

is the dodge journey flex fuel

Is it a wagon or a crossover? The 2016 Dodge Journey blurs the boundaries.

To its credit, the Journey does still have some positive attributes. Its suspension provides a smooth ride even over the roughest road surfaces, and that, in combination with supportive seats and a quiet interior, makes the Journey an ideal companion on long road trips. Pricing is competitive, and if you need to take on more than five passengers, the Journey is one of just a few vehicles in its price range to offer a third row of seating or an optional V6 engine.

Time has not been kind to the Journey, however. In most other aspects, it is woefully outclassed by nearly everything in the segment. Both available engines are undesirable in their own way. The base four-cylinder is unexceptional and paired with a four-speed automatic that was starting to show its age when the Journey was first released. At least you can spring for the 283-horsepower V6, which delivers smooth and reasonably swift acceleration. Either way, the Journey drives straight ahead just fine, but trundles through corners clumsily and with a considerable amount of body roll.

If you need a vehicle with three rows, you may want to consider the 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan . This minivan costs roughly the same as the Journey and offers greater functionality, with plenty of rear cargo space and enough room in the third row to comfortably seat a couple adults. If you're set on a crossover SUV, our top pick for a similarly sized crossover with three rows of seating would be the 2016 Kia Sorento . It's more expensive, but we think its up-to-date design and technology features are worth the extra expense. And if you don't absolutely need a third row, just about any small crossover will give you similar seating comfort and cargo space but with superior fuel economy and refinement.

Yes, the Dodge Journey is still around. But 2016 might be the time to finally stop believin' .

2016 Dodge Journey models

The 2016 Dodge Journey is available in five- and seven-passenger configurations. It is available in five trim levels: base SE, SXT, Crossroad, Crossroad Plus and R/T.

The SE comes standard with 17-inch steel wheels, tinted rear glass, roof rails, dual exhaust tips (V6 models only), heated mirrors, keyless entry and ignition, cruise control, dual-zone manual climate control, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a sliding and reclining second-row seat, a 4.3-inch touchscreen and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player, a USB port and an auxiliary audio jack.

Optional for the SE is the Flexible Seating package, which adds a 50/50-split third row and tri-zone manual climate control.

Moving up to the SXT adds 17-inch alloy wheels, foglights, a unique front fascia, LED taillights, body-colored exterior mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control for front seat passengers, floor mats and the Flexible Seating package.

Moving up to the Crossroad gets you 19-inch wheels, gloss black and chrome exterior trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, satellite radio and a cargo net.

The Crossroad Plus trim expands upon the Crossroad's feature content by adding tri-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery with cloth inserts, a six-way power driver seat (with four-way power lumbar adjustment), a fold-flat front passenger seat with hidden storage bin, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, an in-dash DVD player and an SD card slot.

The 2016 Journey's optional 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system is one of the best you'll find at this price.

The R/T adds a V6 engine, remote engine start, monochrome exterior treatment, unique 19-inch wheels, dual exhaust tips, a sport-tuned suspension and steering wheel calibration, automatic headlights, perforated leather upholstery with red stitching, heated front seats, a premium audio system and a 115-volt power outlet.

Many of the features on the upper trim levels are available on lower trims via option packages. Other available features (depending on trim) include the Blacktop package (gloss black 19-inch wheels, grille and exterior trim), a sunroof, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, integrated second-row child booster seats, a rear seat entertainment system and a navigation system (paired with the 8.4-inch touchscreen).

Performance & mpg

By default, the 2016 Dodge Journey SE, SXT, Crossroad and Crossroad Plus are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 173 hp and 166 pound-feet of torque. It drives the front wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 21 mpg combined (19 city/26 highway), a decidedly subpar rating for a four-cylinder crossover.

Optional on the SE, SXT, Crossroad and Crossroad Plus but standard on the R/T is a 3.6-liter V6. It's good for 283 hp and 260 lb-ft and is matched to a six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard (except on the SE, which cannot be ordered in a FWD/V6 configuration) and all-wheel drive is optional. We recorded a 7.8-second 0-60-mph time in a front-drive, V6-equipped Journey, which is a sluggish showing given this engine's output ratings; still, the V6 gives you plenty of punch in most situations. EPA estimated fuel economy for the V6 is 19 mpg combined (17/25) with front-wheel drive and 19 mpg combined (16/24) with all-wheel drive.

Every 2016 Dodge Journey comes standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, active front head restraints, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. Integrated second-row child booster seats are optional on every Journey. A rearview camera and rear parking sensors are available as an option on the Crossroad Plus and R/T. Features such as blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning are not available, however.

In Edmunds brake testing, a Journey V6 FWD came to a stop from 60 mph in 124 feet, an average performance for this class.

In the most recent government crash tests available, the Journey received four out of five stars for frontal-impact protection. In crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Journey received the top score of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof-strength tests. Its seat and head restraint design was also rated "Good" for whiplash protection in rear impacts. In the agency's small-overlap frontal-offset impact test, however, the Journey received the lowest rating of "Poor."

The 2016 Dodge Journey has two personalities, depending on which engine you choose. The four-cylinder engine is noisy and really doesn't have enough power to get this heavy crossover moving with any sense of urgency, especially when loaded up with passengers. The outdated four-speed automatic transmission that comes with this engine does the Journey no favors in the fuel economy department, either. Accordingly, we'd avoid the four-cylinder entirely and step up to the 3.6-liter V6, which feels potent in any situation. Unfortunately, the six-speed automatic transmission can be slow to respond when a downshift is needed.

When equipped with the optional V6, the 2016 Journey is pretty swift for what it is.

Around town, the Journey provides a smooth ride. However, the steering is on the slow side, and you might find yourself having to make more hand movements than you would otherwise prefer. When driven harder through turns, the Journey's body leans noticeably. The Journey feels heavier than other compact SUVs and solid on the open highway, even over rough surfaces, but it doesn't inspire much confidence around corners.

Though Dodge seldom has enjoyed a reputation for high-quality interiors, the 2016 Journey does boast pleasing materials and textures throughout the cabin and solid-looking assembly. The gauges and dashboard have a functional and contemporary design that wouldn't be out of place in any number of higher-priced vehicles.

The available Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment interface is one of the best in the business. You won't find a system that's more straightforward to use or more pleasing to the eye, with large, readable typefaces and icons and sensible menus.

Families will appreciate the selection of clever storage places squirreled throughout the Journey's cabin, particularly the cubby holes in the floor. There's a fair amount of legroom behind the front seats, and the integrated child booster seats are a nice bonus. Also helping the family-oriented mission is the Journey's available third-row seat, which is bundled with a separate rear air-conditioner. This seat is far from adult-friendly, but it's handy if you need to shuttle a couple extra kids to soccer practice.

Lower all the seats and the Journey coughs up 67.6 cubic feet of total cargo capacity, which is about what you'll get from the best two-row compact crossovers.
